While business activities often slow down during the summer months, we at the SAC-ACE office are busy putting together the final details of our national trade show and convention, “Imagemakers 2007.” Every year, we strive to create a better and more exciting event and this year is no exception. With a record 232 booths reserved to date, including thirty from the US or outside Ontario, we are well on the way to bringing you the best show ever. Those of you who attended the ISA Expo in Las Vegas will be pleased to see several unique exhibitors heading “north” in September. The “Great Canadian Beaver Dam” has been expanded to 1,200 square feet in order to facilitate more hands-on opportunities. Watch and learn from the amazing Letterhead artists as they demonstrate such traditional crafts as wood and foam carving, glass work, pin striping, gold leafing, chipping, gilding, and so on. This year, several of the Letterheads will be giving special scheduled demonstrations, so watch the SAC-ACE web site for more details. An expanded continuing education programme, hosted by experts from across Canada and the US, will cover twelve seminars over two days. These seminars are more highly attended every year so book early to secure the classes you want. With the success of last year’s new, more public venue of the Imagemaking competition, we will be offering even more valuable market exposure to all of this year’s entries, which will now be prominently displayed on the SAC-ACE web site. Entries will be accepted from nonmembers as well this year, in a wider range of categories than ever before, and submitting entries will be as simple as sending an email with a JPEG attachment. Winners, who have achieved excellence in their field, will be announced at the Annual General Meeting on September 29, 2007. On the recreational side of things, the annual golf tournament will be held once again at the award winning Lionhead Golf & Country Club, where we will be playing the Legends course. This popular event was sold out in less than three weeks last year, so book your spot now! Of course, no “Imagemakers” show would be complete without a night of entertainment, and this year we are pleased to invite you to the world famous Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. This amazing show, filled with horsemanship, music, pyrotechnics, and knights in shining armour, is something you won’t want to miss. A private cocktail party will kick off an exciting dinner and show, and a bus will stay late for those who want to finish the evening with some networking or dancing at the “castle.” We have a great weekend planned for you this year, and we look forward to seeing many friends, both old and new, so be sure to stop by the SAC-ACE booth to say hello. See you in Toronto on September 28 and 29 at “Imagemakers 2007”! 6 | ImageMakers

D u BUREAU DE L ’ ACE

Finding a good digital display supplier Do you want companies who need a digital display to think of your company first? A supplier who provides a superior product and comprehensive service will be the one who wins your business. Points to consider, when deciding who that supplier will be, are how displays are manufactured, and the services necessary to keep them performing optimally. Once you determine your requirements, you’ll be better armed to decide which manufacturer to choose. Manufacturing quality Light emitting diode (LED) quality affects display image. Consistency in both brightness and colour shading ensures uniform, crisp content. During the production process, LED display manufacturers measure the brightness and colour shade of individual LEDs and sort them according to similarity. Differences in either will produce a “grainy or “pixelated display image. Top quality organizations buy only the brightest and most colour-consistent LEDs in the world. When viewing displays, ask the manufacturer to supply a solid colour test in red, green or blue so that you can easily spot any flaws. For a more exact test, use an intensity camera to measure the light output and compare each LED to the one next to it. Manufacturers should be ready to supply specific tolerances of light output. 10  |  ImageMakers
LED placement within the module also affects image quality. A cognizant company’s manufacturing will position LEDs so that the light of one is not distorted or hidden behind another when viewed from a certain angles. The inexact placement of LEDs, called “shouldering, can result in a display’s image looking more magenta from one angle and more cyan from another. The selection of high-quality LEDs alone does not ensure a uniform, nongrainy display image. Some manufacturers go a step further by performing a proprietary “full-depth factory calibration of each module during the manufacturing process. They calibrate modules in a specially designed chamber to ensure the consistency of every LED. Finally, ask your digital display manufacturer about its displays’ dimming capabilities. Some companies’ digital displays feature a photocell to adjust the LED brightness according to ambient light. Without brightness control, a display’s intensity at night can be so bright that its content will be unreadable, and possibly offensive, to some travellers. After installation of your digital display Choose a manufacturer who offers the resources to provide excellent service post-sale to maintain display image capabilities, if it’s not in your best interest to continue servicing the display. Companies featuring many or all of these services offer after-the-sale service guarantees to help keep customers happy with the same sharp, uniform content the display exhibited the first day. A range of companies have developed a field calibration technique that keeps consistent colours across the entire display face. All displays require ventilation to dramatically increase the life of the display. It’s recommended to change and/or clean the vent filters at least once a year and making sure that the fans are working properly. A skilled technician can guide you through this process. Leading technical service departments use a diagnostic program to monitor your display with visual verification by web camera technology and an intelligent controller. Trained staff watches for critical and noncritical errors and dispatches a technician to resolve these errors before they cause a problem. Technicians versed in this new technology undergo extensive factory training prior to working on displays running diagnostics, monitoring different conditions that may cause module or data errors, and addressing brightness control issues and display temperatures. Where factory technicians aren’t available, many companies use Authorized Service Companies (ASCs) whose staff also follows rigorous training, meeting stringent standards. A network of ASCs across Canada and the US are ready to keep displays looking great, year after year. Offer your customers the most effective advertising medium they will ever own, which looks as great year after year as it did when first fired up. Start with a display designed and manufactured to provide superior image quality, and see that it stays that way with comprehensive field service support. “The Great Canadian Beaver Dam”
Where Art, Industry Sports and Kids Com Together By Judith Milne
Last year, immediately after the close of “Imagemakers 2006,” some of the talented Letterhead artists of the exciting “Great Canadian Beaver Dam” were discussing how they might create a special project at the 2007 show, which could be donated to a special interest group—specifically one involving kids. The group approached SAC Executive Director, Bob Bronk, to see if he could help them develop the idea. Bob, a member of the Toronto Argonaut Alumni, immediately thought of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto because, on May 23rd of this year, the Toronto Argonauts had generously donated $4 million to the Sick Kids’ Foundation. Bob contacted George Karamaritis of the Argos to get his support. George wholeheartedly endorsed the project and gave permission for the artists to use the official Toronto Argonaut logo and/or image if need be. The next step was to speak to Robert Witchel of the Sick Kids’ Foundation to see if, in fact, it had an interest in the project and a proper place for it to be 14 | ImageMakers
displayed. Having reviewed the information about and portfolios of some of the artists to be involved, Robert enthusiastically welcomed the offer. Although there were some administrative channels to clear, the project was approved and Robert has suggested that one of the waiting room/play areas in the new section of the hospital would be a perfect spot for the future “work of art.” The innovative undertaking is now in the planning phase and is headed up by René Giroux, a professional sign maker, sign painter and graphic artist with 25 years of industry experience. His team of artists includes Nancy Beaudette, Noella Cotnam, Don Edwards, Bevin Finlay, Brian Hansen, Ghyslain Grenier, Ralph Noble, Pete Payne, Dan Sawatzky, Pierre Tardif, and Tramp Warner. An upcoming visit to the hospital is scheduled, where they will discuss location, dimensions, and style of the project, which will display a football theme. The “Great Canadian Beaver Dam” has been expanded to 1200 sq. ft. for this year’s
“Imagemakers 2007” and will provide plenty of room for the team of artisans to produce its masterpiece. Visitors to the show will be able to actually watch the work in progress over the weekend and view, firsthand, the methods and skills of these talented individuals. Just prior to the close of the event on Saturday, September 29, with the SAC-ACE Board of Directors and members of the Argo Alumni in attendance, the finished piece will be formally presented to a representative from the Hospital for Sick Children. Everyone is excited about this most worthwhile effort and our hats are off to the thoughtful artists who initiated the project and to everyone involved in making it happen. Join us at the “Great Canadian Beaver Dam” to be part of the fun when art, industry, sports and kids come together to create a truly unique experience – only at “Imagemakers 2007” – on September 28 and 29! Watch for the October issue of Imagemakers for a follow up article and photos. IM

Sign Industry: Know Your Rights ISA’s New Advocacy DVD: “Vital Signs – Vibrant Communities” By ISA Staff The International Sign Association recently developed a new informational DVD aimed at educating city sign code developers and regulators on the value of signage and sign users’ inherent rights granted under the US Constitution. At approximately three minutes in length, “Vital Signs - Vibrant Communities” is designed to be viewed by sign companies or end users at public hearings, where citizens are typically given less than five minutes to present their case. Beginning next month, the video will be available at no cost to ISA members and will be distributed directly to government officials at various conferences and programs throughout the year.
36 | ImageMakers
Distribution of ISA’s government relations DVD to city planners and zoning officers will augment the group’s current grassroots-level outreach efforts. It will also provide a useful tool to sign users who are striving at the local level to negotiate fair and reasonable code enforcement with municipal governments. “This project marks the culmination of more than a year of hard work on the part of ISA’s government relations staff,” said ISA President and CEO Lori Anderson. “It is a tangible example of ISA’s strategic effort to build awareness of the value of signage to our communities among city officials, and to position ISA as an essential resource for sign-related information among businesses
associated with or impacted by signs. “Non-traditional educational tools such as this DVD will become increasingly important as ISA strives to represent the interests of the sign industry on a comprehensive scale,” she said. “Our goal is to educate broader audiences—including local governments—on the important role on-premise signage plays in the success of business and, therefore, the growth of the economy,” said Anderson. IM “Vital Signs - Vibrant Communities” is available free to ISA members. Non-members can purchase the DVD for $3. To learn more, please contact David Hickey, ISA’s government relations director, at (703) 836-4012 or david.hickey@signs.org.

Are you Covered? Considering your Insurance Options is Key if You’re in the Sign Industry By Staff Writer
The sign industry is becoming more diverse with each year, and the evidence of this is clearly shown by the variety of 2007 CONSAC exhibitors. It’s not just the large businesses that are involved in many different elements of sign manufacturing. These days, it is quite common for even a small sign shop to be involved with everything from vinyl adhesive graphics to engraving to vehicle wraps. How does this effect purchasing insurance or, more accurately, the correct insurance? Jason Wiesner, the president of Wiesner Insurance, answers this and other insurance concerns relating to the sign industry. Wiesner Insurance, located in Brampton, ON, has designed a specialized insurance program for the sign industry that has been endorsed by the Sign Association of Canada. This custom-tailored insurance product addresses the many different operations of a sign manufacturer and installer, who, if improperly insured under conventional “package policies,” can be left uninsured in the event of a loss. “I speak with sign industry business owners every day to review their requirements and provide a proposal under our program,” says Mr. Wiesner. “Nearly every policy that I review incorrectly reflects the operations and needs of the business owner.” “It’s important for business owners to realize that just having insurance does not mean you have properly addressed this issue. Their insurance has to be the correct kind, in order to have their coverage respond when they need it,” says Mr. Wiesner. When reviewing your business insurance requirements, dealing with someone who
understands the sign industry is a great advantage. Additionally, property values need to reflect their accurate replacement cost. Without a regular review of policy limits and coverages, insured values can become outdated over time. New equipment acquisitions, changes in stock values, and owner or leasehold improvements require adjustments in insured values. When reviewing the policies of potential clients, insurance companies find that the most common flaw is under the liability section. “It is incredibly important that the insurer knows all operations of its client and the sales figures derived from that client’s various operations. For example, coverage for a lawsuit caused by a sign falling from a building and causing personal injury to a pedestrian can be declined if the insuring company believes its client manufactures signs and is not aware that installation is also performed,” says Mr. Wiesner. This example clearly shows the importance of the insurer and the broker understanding the
complexities of even a conventional sign business. Larger companies with specialized operations can magnify this importance. Insurance companies classify businesses they insure into several categories: retail, wholesale, manufacturing or contracting (installation or offpremise work). Most industries can be easily slotted into one of these areas but even a small business within the sign industry typically falls into more than one if not all of these categories. “Business owners spend a lot of money on insurance. It is absolutely imperative that they get value for those dollars. The only way that is achieved is if the correct coverage is in place in time of need. Merely having insurance is not quite enough,” says Mr. Wiesner. Enough said? IM

SAC Board Identifies
Current Trends in the Sign Industry
The Sign Association of Canada Board met February 17-18, 2007, and its discussions about how the Association can benefit members lead them to identify emerging trends that can affect its members’ ability to perform and thrive (and survive). The trends the Association identified, which will shape the future of the Sign Association of Canada’s members are: Large S/S LED/New Lighting. In larger sign shops, LEDs and new lighting systems have been adopted; embracing these new systems may lead to growth for smaller shops as well; Small S/S digital. In small sign shops, there is no doubt that they are going to have to go to digital or their businesses will suffer and even fail. If they have been “peel and stick” operators for a long time, they are going to have to change; Erection/sign maintenance. Bylaws and regulations may necessitate investment in new equipment. In erection and sign maintenance, a shop’s major concerns relate to bylaws and regulations. New regulations may result in technical changes to signage, necessitating the purchase of new equipment, which will require capital investment. Being aware of and addressing these new rules will help sign shops operate lawfully within their industry. Increased enforcement of bylaws and regulations. There is increased enforcement of these new rules. The Board sees enforcement of these rules as almost becoming a “tough love” situation, and those shops that fail to 38 | ImageMakers
follow the rules will be penalized. Safety on the job. Additionally, there is also a heightened awareness of the safety factors that are now a necessary part of sign construction, erection and maintenance. Complying with new and recent federal and provincial health and safety legislation is becoming a major issue in the sign industry as various government agencies have stepped up their enforcement efforts. In addition, there are liability issues associated with the common practice of subcontracting about which most companies are not aware. Change can be good. The new generation of sign makers are starting to challenge the long-standing guard saying, “You are not the authority anymore.” With change comes growth, and customers, as well as members of the sign industry, are ready for the excitement (and challenge) of new technologies to drive the industry onward. Technology can take your business across the nation. Internet and Email have extended local shops’ customer reach further than ever before. The Board has seen some significant examples of national growth: in one case, a shop having
a three-to-five shop chain locally has then built further business at the other end of the country by emailing files and coordinating a full job online. The emphasis in terms of what a sign shop person’s role is is beginning to be challenged, changed and extended…sometimes nationally. Heightened competition by other sectors. The Board cautioned that sign shops must be aware of other sectors beginning to intrude on their traditional sign market. Due to changes within their industry, say for commercial printers, they have been forced to seek other ways in which to stay in business and generate revenue. This has lead to infringement on the sign making industry’s patch, often helped along by the Internet. Being aware of these rapidly changing business models, and the players in their market, will serve SAC members well when seeking to build their businesses and respond to customer needs. The Board welcomes your thoughts and comments on the trends they discussed during their February meeting. Please pass your input on to Bob Bronk at bronk@sac-ace.ca. IM Anne Haapanen is the editor of ImageMakers.

Multicam Canada MultiCam, L.P., a leading manufacturer of CNC router, laser, plasma, waterjet and knifecutting machines now offers several new products. Multicam has recently introduced a fully integrated Vision System for cutting printed graphics with registration marks. MultiVision is a combination of hardware and software that can visually recognize media registration marks and then automatically compensate for skew and image drift. The MultiVision system easily integrates into your existing workflow while providing the additional flexibility of utilizing a traditional tool pathing software for general sign shop routing. Multicam has also recently introduced two new accessories that work in conjunction with a CNC router to allow the user to run lightweight foamcore-like materials. The first is a straight knife blade and the second is an oscillating blade. The oscillating blade cuts foam materials easier than a straight blade, where cut speed is often limited by the oscillation frequency. Both options offer tangential cutting capabilities for keeping the blade tangent to the cut contour while lifting at sharp corners and both can be combined with our MultiVision camera registration system. We’d be pleased to demonstrate these new products for you at our Multicam Canada booth, # 322, during Consac 2007! SignWorks: Canada’s Only Sign Industry Job Site By Judith Milne With the rapid growth in virtually every sector of the Canadian sign industry and the increased need to work with companies in other provinces as well as the US came the idea to create a web site that would facilitate such interaction. SignWorks was launched in January 2006, and has become one of the most popular benefits of SAC membership. While non-members posting “Help Wanted” ads are charged according to a scaled-fee structure, SAC members may place job postings with their company logos, as well as classified ads for equipment either wanted or for sale, for free, as a benefit of membership in the association. Individuals seeking employment within
the industry may also post their resumes for free and search on the site for potential employment. To make use of SignWorks, members must first create an on-line account by selecting the “SAC Members” box on the home page, and then selecting the red “Register Now.” The company simply submits its information and, upon approval,
is sent a confirmation email which will allow it access to all of site’s useful features. To date, over one hundred and thirty companies have placed their job wanted ads, and over sixty-five job seekers have posted their resumes. At any given time, the site displays approximately fifteen ads for jobs from across Canada. SignWorks promises to continue to be a very useful tool for managing business growth in the sign industry. We encourage you to visit the site often, use it to broaden your contact and resource base, and save yourself time and money as well. To learn about SignWorks, please visit www.signworkscanada.ca. IM
