Greetings image and sign makers. Thanks for picking up the latest issue of ImageMakers Magazine. We think you will enjoy it.

The SAM and CHUM signs take centre stage, (sounds like a vaudeville act), but we’re talking, of course, about two of Toronto’s giants in the sign world. One waits in hopeful anticipation of being re-erected, the other has found a brand new home in the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district.

If you’ve walked down Toronto’s Yonge Street lately, you will know how much it has changed since the ‘70s. That’s sure true for the much loved, (and even once hated by some area residents) CHUM FM sign that was a symbol on Yonge south of St. Clair Avenue. It once shone like a beacon in the night, but looked a bit ragged during the day.

Urban legend has it that the sign was once vandalized by area residents who claimed the wattage interfered with their televisions and radios.

But having lived beside the sign in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, I can attest to the fact that it never interfered with my electronic equipment.

Still, the legend lives on. Now the site of upscale condominiums, the sign has a bright future.

Further down on Yonge, at Dundas Street, stood the SAM The Record Man sign: Two magnificent flashing vinyl records that beckoned shoppers to buy music the old-fashioned way. That iconic sign is also gone from its original place, but it’s protected by the Ontario Historic Act. And so, SAM now waits in temperaturecontrolled exile for its new home.

And going green in an age of cynicism can be a complicated endeavor for any business. A new, emerging term, coined by advertisers, is “green washing.” Advertisers beware: the public trusts certain aspects of green products, but you had better make sure the B.S. factor is low.

June Yee writes about the burgeoning green scene in the sign industry and tells us how some sign makers are making their green mark in the industry, and how the challenges facing the sign industry to go green are mounting.

I had the chance to speak with Pierre Tardiff, a gifted letter artist with a rich portfolio of work and an even richer life story. Pierre is featured on our back cover.

Carolina Hicks gives us some great insight into workplace safety issues. Even if you have heard it before, it is worth reading again to file in that all-important back burner of your mind. She also takes us through the benefits of E-Learning.

Internet marketing guru Paul Tobey has a few pointers on how to make your website stand out in an overcrowded field. David Leckie files a story from an ad man’s perspective in this amazing sign making business, and the two geniuses who started it all long ago.

Positive changes inside SAC As we saw the long, harsh days of winter give way to spring, exciting changes were a-foot within the The Sign Association of Canada.

On June 1st of this year SAC turned a new page with the appointment of a new administration within the National office.

A sense of excitement and renewed optimism ensued when Just Cole and Sherri Edwards accepted the assignment to co-manage The Sign Association of Canada.

Both of these individuals bring a wealth of industry knowledge and relevant experience to their positions.

Their skill sets, although very different, should prove to be the necessary balance needed to take SAC to the next level.

Just’s role is to preside over operational and governmental matters including legislative issues impacting the industry, while Sherri’s role is to direct all aspects of sales and marketing within both the National and Regional offices.

I have presented both Sherri and Just with the task of making us a truly National Association. Sherri will have the important responsibility of growing our Membership, while Just’s primary focus will be to proactively position us to the forefront of governmental issues across the country.

I must say I am extremely excited with the Association’s new look. The initiatives for growth Sherri and Just have planned for SAC are both insightful and sound. The patience and support demonstrated by our members will be rewarded. The advent of improved money saving

programs; the introduction of associate membership geared towards all buyers of the finished product; a consistent presence within all levels of government working to ensure legislation is both sensible and workable for all sectors of the industry -these are but a few of the plans you will see unfolding within the coming months.

We must, however, keep in mind that in order to be a truly national Association, a united effort by every Provincial chapter will be necessary to ensure these initiatives are realized. Sherri and Just will need everyone’s full commitment to make the necessary changes needed in order to take the Sign Association of Canada to the next level.

It is our intent to have Sherri or Just or both attend one of your chapter meetings over the course of the next few months to gain better insight into each region’s needs and challenges.

I am certain with Just and Sherri leading the way, in collaboration with our full support, we can and will become an Association that members will be proud to be part of.

SAC NATIONAL: We are delighted to have been granted the opportunity to lead the Sign Association of Canada through this metamorphic journey.

The responsibilities of the day to day administering of duties within the National Office have now been apportioned into Operations and Sales and Marketing.

It is therefore our objective to provide an overview of current and upcoming news and directives for both Operations and Sales & Marketing.

OPERATIONS: We continue to work on a national front in dealing with various ongoing governmental issues such as Mercury use, Canadian Electrical Code revisions and developing a national presence for SAC, particularly within the legislative arena. A commitment to work with NAIT and ISA on accredited courses such as SSIT is also underway to roll out across the country.

With respect to the Mercury use, we are working with Environment Canada on expressing our needs and concerns with regards to the proposed restrictions on Mercury use in signage. We have consulted with ISA on their ongoing work in the US and we are working with interested parties across Canada to provide Environment Canada.

With respect to the Canadian Electrical Code, our team of experts is working on the new class 2 wire regulations, inspections and certifications. Again, the interests of the Sign Industry are paramount. With the ever increasing use of LED’s, the new regulations on Class 2 wire and certification are important to our industry.

We are currently working with the City of Toronto on their new amalgamated bylaw. There will be a decrease in the previous sign allocation of the wall area from 30% to 20%, but most existing regulations will remain similar to the previous regulations. Out of home signage, or third party signage, continues to be a contentious item for discussion. SAC is closely monitoring the work being done on this front.

The Ontario Building Code is now raising issues with respect to the ASTM regulations on plastic burn rates when used in a vertical position. The City of Toronto and the building branch of the Ministry of Municipal

Affairs and Housing (MMAH) have confirmed that as an industry we need to provide proof of certification of compliance with ASTM D568-77(1985) as per the OBC. The industry has shown that this testing is no longer done. We are working with MMAH to secure other means of approval such as UL94-V2 as an acceptable alternative.

SALES and MARKETING: The National office is abuzz with activity in preparation for CONSAC Imagemakers 2009. We are delighted with the number of new exhibitors that have registered this year. Booth sales had slowed for a time as many were concerned about the economic downturn but we’re pleased to say they are rebounding nicely in correlation WITH the increase in market confidence.

We are putting the final touches on 6 timely, relevant seminars that will be presented in a more interactive format. Look for detailed outlines of the seminars in the upcoming CONSAC Imagemakers Show Guide.

We have recently reworked our Associate Membership category in order to expand our membership focus to include all purchasers of the finished product. A major campaign will get underway this fall to target advertising agencies, marketing companies, government agencies, etc., in an effort to bring buyers and sellers together.

The current member benefits are carefully being reviewed and new value added programs have been identified, including credit card processing, office products, and equipment service plans to name but a few. Initial discussions are underway in an effort to secure preferred pricing on new programs that will positively impact our members, fixed operating costs.

Late last year BC launched their first monthly Breakfast Workshop, with Ontario hosting their first this past June. Our initiative to bring monthly workshop programs to all chapters will be coordinated late this fall in order to create consistency and continuity in programs and services right across Canada.

A national monthly newsletter will also be launched this fall. It is the directive of SAC to communicate to our members on a timely basis all activities, events and industry news within the national and regional offices.

Successful online marketing begins with targeted keyword research

Most businesses recognize that the Internet is fast becoming a major marketing tool for virtually any type of product or service.

But, what most people don’t realize is how to actually go about it.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of information available, the biggest mistake businesses will make is going out and blindly hiring a web designer thinking marketing is their area of expertise, when in fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

While some web designers may have some marketing skills, it is not their main purpose.

What they do well is design websites. Internet marketing, on the other hand, is a completely different ball game and something few people, even web designers, know a lot about.

Having said that, you must recognize it is your responsibility to educate yourself on exactly what Internet marketing is and how to go about it.

Targeted keyword research is the art of finding out how many people use a major search engine everyday using words that correlate to your products and services, and exactly what keyword phrases they use to do this.

Why is that important?

Because when you consider approximately 85% of North Americans use a search engine before any other medium of research, it becomes clear it’s pretty important to know exactly what their search habits are.

Even if you know, on some level, that you have to use keyword phrases in your website, the sad truth is most people just guess at what those phrases are. And, while you may choose some pretty good ones relevant to your products and services, most of the words and phrases you end up choosing won’t bring you much search engine traffic.

The reason for this is that you have not factored in your competition. Think about

it: If you choose relevant keyword phrases solely based on guessing, what you haven’t considered is how many other websites there are in cyberspace using exactly the same keyword phrases.

One of the ways you can find more relevant keyword phrases is to use a membership site such as Wordtracker.

What Wordtracker can do is suggest relevant keyword phrases based on your products and services, and tell you exactly how much competition there is for each phrase.

For example, the keyword phrase Sign Company gets 4,800 searches a month, but there are 120 million competing websites.

On the other hand, a more targeted search for phrases like, Sign Company, Toronto, gets much less searches, but only has 458,000 competing websites. That means you have a much better shot of competing for longer, (long tail), more targeted keyword phrases, than shorter ones.

On top of that, Wordtracker can calculate the Keyword Effectiveness Index of each of

Keyword Density, and we’ll tackle that one in an upcoming column.

For now, be aware that choosing good keyword phrases, which have high search volumes and low competition, is a great starting point for any online marketing plan.

My suggestion is to come up with at least 20 good targeted keyword phrases before constructing your site or a least before your next site re-design. IM

There are other factors that determine the quality of your competition – like how many times the keyword phrase is used on a particular web page – or how many inbound links there are. your keyword phrases, and then help you choose exactly the right ones to create more traffic to your site.

Once you have chosen your keyword phrases you must strategically place them within your site surrounded by significant amounts of content. This strategy is known as

Great White Way SloanLED raises the bar with increased brightness, more flexibility

Amid the ongoing developments that are advancing the growth of LEDs in the sign industry, Ventura, California-based SloanLED prides itself on being an industry leader.

With an impressive 50 years in the business, SloadLED estimates it has saved the industry a total of 800 GWh (gigawatts/an hour) since its inception.

Marketing Manager Jill Bonilla says they’ve accomplished this incredible feat through, “Our eco-friendly LED solutions and innovations; every bit of innovation and technology in this area helps the industry improve the environment.”

Now, SloanLED is hoping to bolster its position with Great White 3, an LED lighting system that offers advanced brightness while using fewer modules. Like all of the company’s “ChanneLED” products, the system avoids the, “over drive” that can shorten the lifespan of LEDs and undermine potential savings in energy costs.

Launched at this year’s ISA International Sign Expo, Great White 3 is uniquely designed to meet the challenge of sign cabinets and channel letters that are wide, tall or deep, and the company is touting the system as one of

the most energy efficient and brightest in the industry. Notably, the one-of-a-kind, “Snap and

Stretch” technology allowing the creation of two modules from one LED, limiting splicing and jumping, and giving sign makers a greater degree of flexibility.

With this technology, SloanLED has also removed another persistent obstacle that has faced the industry, the potential incompatibility with the effects of harsh weather.

Now, thanks to the module design and a proprietary weatherproof coating, Great White 3 works in temperatures ranging from -40º C to +70º C. IM

Can E-Learning compete with in-class health & safety training?

You re-focus briefly as the trainer engages a nearby participant in a question-andanswer exchange. But the instructor returns to droning on and you drift again. At some point you may complete some questions either verbally or on paper.

T h e g l o ba l ly o u t s o u rc e d E-learning market is estimated at more than $14-billion a year, and is growing faster than DVD, instructor-led, or more-traditional training formats. Safety and compliance training can now be effectively provided through E-learning programs.

Designing effective E-learning tools requires evaluating what support a learner needs before, during, and after the point of need to achieve the desired learning outcome.

Resulting E-learning solutions can include many traditional characteristics of training and performance support, as well as new components enabled by technology.

Picture this: You walk into a training room where you are greeted by the trainer.

You sit back, relax and appear in cyberspace to listen to the trainer drone on about some health and safety issue.

The lights dim and you are barraged by a boring PowerPoint slide presentation; you take some notes – as educators know a great deal of time in the traditional classroom is spent gathering information, (taking notes) rather than processing and assimilating the information.

The traditional learning model goes from the gathering to recall stage without regard for whether the information is actually understood, processed and assimilated.

You start to drift and your mind wanders to the myriad of things happening in your life – from the messages waiting in your in-box, to your teenager’s problems at school, your spouse, friends, mortgage etc.

E-Learning Now picture this: To begin his learning experience, a worker logs onto a web-based training program to familiarize himself with basic ideas.

The content is presented in organized sections that are easily understood, with periodic quizzes at the end of a module requiring the employee's responses. The employee then has the opportunity to go back and review material if necessary.

E-learning can actually increase learning retention as it shifts the participant from a passive learning role of listener and observer, to a selfinitiated, active, learning participant.

It also provides the participant with tools to measure retention of information and corrective measures that need to be made. E-learning can even include scheduled or random post-training reassessments to measure the retention of information over time.

By using E-learning as a teaching tool, a company can arrive at a training process that is more engaging and effective than traditional face-to-face learning at an economical cost. With focus on the participant, E-learning ensures each employee fully understands the training content, ultimately leading to safer job performance and a stronger bottom line. IM

“I listen to CHUM!” Anyone who was a teenager living in Toronto in the ‘70s remembers answering the phone with that phrase to anyone and everyone who called, just praying it was CHUM FM offering some cool prizes.

The station’s call for listeners to answer their telephones with the phrase was genius advertising at the time.

But those were the days when only a handful of stations had teens glued to their radios. CHUM AM and later FM was once home to the only Top 40 station in Canada.

Something else has also vanished: The iconic sign that once stood at 1331 Yonge St. in Toronto.

Luxury condominiums now occupy the spot where the CHUM marker once proudly stood.

Erected shortly after the station’s move to Yonge from its original location at 250 Adelaide St., the sign could be seen from St. Clair Avenue in the north to Summerville Avenue in the south, along a stretch of the world’s longest street.

At one time, some local residents and businesses accused the sign’s wattage of interfering with radio and phone lines. When it was finally removed for refurbishing, it left a permanent hole in the landscape.

The sign was such an important part of Toronto that there is a book in the CHUM Radio museum titled The CHUM Sign.

Jon Arklay is vice-president of design and brand for CTV’s creative agency, “the marquee had a two-sided V-shape, which the city forced down because of the new over-hang laws. And so we put up a marquee that clung to the wall immediately below the sign. That was also removed during a re-facing of the building in the mid-‘60s. The entire sign came down when vandals took out the sign, and part of the Chevrolet-Corvette showroom across the street. But then the sign was completely replaced based on the original specifications that had been kept on file.”

Dismantling the marker was not as complicated as the CHUM team thought it would be, Arklay says, “the sign was still structurally in good shape, worn out, but still in good order. Every precaution was taken to ensure that it was not damaged while removing it.”

But, Arklay recalls that it was a slow process because the sign was in three separate sections: Two wings and a vertical element made the

dismantling an intricate process. Each section was carefully unbolted and lifted off the rooftop, and the steel structure was put onto a transport trailer.

The CHUM sign was returned to its former glory and now sits atop its new digs on the popular corner of 260 Richmond St. W. at Duncan Street in Toronto’s entertainment district.

To maintain the original look of the sign, neon was used over LED tube lighting. This made the sign greener because the neon transformers were updated to high efficient electronic transformers.

As Arklay explains, “the old neon and original transformers were destroyed in compliance with the handling of hazardous materials; and, of course, all the wiring and housing was brought up to code.”

Fast forward: TORONTO’S STILL LISTENING TO CHUM! After nine months of painstaking refurbishment, the Toronto landmark was re-erected at its new home on June 15, 2009.

Signs are all around us, and for different reasons they have an impact on us because they mark times in history. CTV’s communications manager, Alexis Hood says, “It was incredible to see people on the day it was being installed, there were quite a few people standing across the street reminiscing about the sign and recalling old stories. We received numerous emails and calls, and onlookers stopped through the day and into the night.”

CHUM Radio president, Chris Gordon says, “this sign is a great reminder of CHUM’s irrefutable place in the history of this city. For over six decades, CHUM has been the city’s go-to destination for the hits and this tradition lives on with 104.5 CHUM FM.” CHUM Radio launched in Toronto in 1945 with a 250-watt radio station and was originally licensed only to broadcast from dawn ‘till dusk. The first CHUM sign was installed at 1331 Yonge Street in 1959 and was altered to the current design in November 1978. It was removed from 1331 Yonge Street on the evening of September 4, 2008 for refurbishing.

All signs point to progress – 347 Yonge Street – forever changed

It took a team of experts and careful attention to detail to dismantle one of Toronto’s most beloved signs, Sam The Record Man. The sign once stood proudly on Yonge Street north of Dundas, its two vinyl records flashing in the night sky. Deemed a historical artifact under the Ontario Heritage Act, the sign, for now, waits to be re-erected.

From the ‘60s to the ‘80s, Sam the Record Man was a hip hangout for the legions of music lovers who fingerpicked through the latest punk and rock records they could not find anywhere else. Kids scanned rows upon rows of vinyl 33s and 45s of every music genre from around the world. Bright fluorescent lights lit up the entire store and the music blared out onto the street. Considered one of the coolest places to work, employees were also a part of the store’s allure. Outside, chess players banged their sand timers to the music in between moves.

It was a different Toronto. The music sensations of the time were a handful of talented performers

like Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray and The Guess Who. Sam Sniderman was awarded the Order of Canada for helping those acts. He and his brother Sid also gave breaks to local punk and rock musicians, giving them exposure in the store when others would not.

To spice up the stretch along Yonge Street, Sam Sniderman contacted two of the sign industry’s heavyweights, the Brothers Markle, to construct the SAM sign, about 38 years ago.

“Sam contacted us to supply a couple of small signs on the face of the building and to change the message on two of the existing signs,” recalls Jack Markle. “Our Jack Derraugh created the record concept. We then made a scale mock-up to show them how the neon would flash to simulate the turning record.”

The sign is made of metal, steel and neon,

not different from what is used today except that modern electronic flashers are newer than the older mechanical ones.

Sam and Sid were “deliriously happy with the finished product,” says Markle.

It didn’t take long for it to become an icon on Yonge Street and for Toronto.

“It took about two months including permit approval to complete. It was a very big deal at the time, and the most innovative sign in Canada,” says Markle.

Alas, it was an undeserved ending for these amazing proprietors of music, but in step with the fickle and unpredictable nature of showbiz. The Sniderman brothers began selling records in 1937 and opened the first Sam store in 1959. The business soon grew to 130 stores, but as a victim of the Internet age, went bankrupt in 2001.

Not surprisingly, the Brothers Markle say they are proud of their sign and fondly remember it as one of the city’s most recognizable.

The building in which Sam the Record man was housed, meantime, was bought by Ryerson University. Stay tuned: Those big red and black record discs may soon flash again. IM

No easy feat to dismantle a giant

The very specialized and sophisticated dismantling, preserving, and storing of the SAM sign was completed by Gregory Signs.

“We worked to ensure the neon was properly removed and stored in crates that intertwined the tubes onto chicken wire,” says national sales manager, David Grose.

Each piece was a painstaking process: • On site checks – crews and engineers • Develop labeling for each sign component • Catalogue • Complete inventory and determine condition of each tube, etc.

• Tag each frame • Exact configuration to reassemble • Securely crate, store and protect • Controlled environment – not exposed to the elements The 12 pie shape sections and 124 tubes of neon, (18 alone of which are in the SAM words) were stored.

“There are 300 tubes in the words, That’s Entertainment, which had to be taken off and inspected. The fascia signs, 24’ x 5’ high, Yes this is Sam, Sam the Record Man’ were put in storage, as carefully as they

were once put up,” adds Grose.

“The background and transformers that operated the flashing units, were rusted, and corroded so were replaced them all,” said Grose.

So now that everything has been documented, detailed, catalogued, inspected, piece by piece, Grose says, “the refurbishing involves reassessment of every component from transformers, flashing units, neon tubes, flashing marquee bulbs, recondition and finishing of the SAM letters.”

Like the sound of a vinyl record to a CD – the flow and look of neon can’t be beat – it has that “certain classic look that white tubing just can’t capture,” says Grose.

The border tubing alone has one power supply that runs the whole thing; it takes 30 or 40 transformers to run neon.

It draws 100 amps, at 120 volts of power equal to everything on in your 100 amp home service home and running it 24/7, costing thousands of dollars a year in electricity to operate.

The decision to return the sign to its former glory must be made within the three-year time limit imposed by the Historical Society. For those us who remember the Sam Sign so fondly, hope it’s sooner 2009let’s RESOURCE GUIDE | 13 rather than later.

New Trends and Technology – LED Innovations

Jerry Pappa first became enamored with light emitting diodes back in the seventies when, working as a disk jockey, he, and a technician friend devised an indoor LED sign to promote his business. “The sign chased my company name back and forth. Every time it hit the musical note [at the end of the name], the chaser pattern changed direction—from right to left, and from left to right,” says Pappa, who is now president of Sunitron Inc., a Concord, Ont.-based supplier of indoor and outdoor LED signs.

In the more than 30 years since that r u d i m e n t a r y d e s i g n f i r s t t we a k e d h i s imagination, Pappa’s enthusiasm for LEDs has grown, with many of his homespun experiments presaging concepts and applications that are now commonplace.

Creating coloured LED lighting with food dyes and designing LED turn signals for cars, for example, are among his pioneering ef forts to highlight some of the thenunderappreciated potential of LEDs. Of the many advantages of fered by LEDs, energy efficiency is by far the best k n ow n a n d m o s t w i d e l y t o u t e d . L E D lighting is 95 per cent more efficient than incandescent, and an LED sign uses just 10 watts of power, six to 10 times less than a comparable neon sign.

Growing environmental consciousness a n d w i d e s p re a d aw a re n e s s a b o u t t h e energ y savings are fostering the quick growth of LEDs. Importantly, not only has this “green” aspect boosted the popularity o f L E D s fo r h o u s e h o l d u s e, i t ’s a l s o contributing to their growing acceptance for bigger-scale, commercial applications.

Combining LEDs with solar power (which is itself limited by available technology and environmental conditions) for street lighting, for example, makes perfect sense, says Sunitron’s Pappa, so it’s not surprising that some municipalities in Canada are already doing it.

Latest technologies merge digital display with fixed graphics Graphic sign-makers faced with the challenge of presenting real-time information in digital format may now have a simple-to-use and energy-efficient option. Among the products to debut at the ISA International Sign Expo 2009, North America’s largest sign industry trade event, were Smart Signs from Albuquerque, NM-based Tred Displays. The Expo was held in Las Vegas from April 16 to April 18, 2009.

Smart Signs are based on the company’s tredPANEL™ and tredLINK™ technologies.

Described by Tred as “ready-to-go,” tredPANEL uses proprietary Electro-Magnetic Digital Display™ (EMD2) technology to create a reflective, digital sign panel with high-contrast, large-format text that looks similar to ink.

Communications to the signs, meanwhile, are handled by tredLINK, a wireless management system with applications for Windows® and for Tred’s own iN200 USB routers.

The company says its EMD2 technology is 80 per cent reflective, bi-stable and requires very low power. Based on this technology, TredPANELS allow sign-makers to add inkjet or cut-vinyl graphics to produce a Smart Sign, which is battery powered, wireless, and may be hung like a poster. By eliminating complicated installation, content management and high power requirements that may be associated with digital LCD and LED technology, Tred believes its new signs will open the door to digital signage for many graphic sign-makers and their customers who were previously constrained by price.

Dynamic applications expected to benefit from this development include digital pricing and point-of-purchase displays, as well as numeric information that is updated on an ongoing basis, such as interest rates, temperature, and time.

making LEDs more versatile and more attractive, helping to encourage their use in signage. One such improvement in recent years is the angle of view afforded

by LEDs, which is now considerably wider than before, says Pappa.

LED use in signage has experienced a huge jump in the past three years and LED signs have grown to account for a whopping 95 per cent of the market, according to Bob Craig, president of Acme Neon and Plastics Signs in Mississauga, Ont. “From a lighting perspective, it’s the most dramatic change we have seen,” says Craig, who has been in the business for more than 40 years.

“LEDs are always changing. They’re becoming bigger, brighter and more cost ef ficient,” says Craig. In fact, it’s not unusual to see significant changes in LED technology every six to nine months, he says. Craig notes that lack of regulation is evidence and byproduct of this fast growth by the LED industry.

Nonetheless, says Craig, the decision by businesses to choose LEDs is a simple one, especially in light of recent developments.

Not only have costs dropped significantly over the past four years, LED signs offer an inherent advantage of low maintenance when compared with the alternative, neon.

“They’re easy to ship and easy to repair in the field,” says Craig. That’s in part because LEDs generate very little heat, making LED signs easy to handle when it comes to installation and repairs. They are also more durable; an LED sign rarely breaks down and, when fading does take place, it’s barely perceptible to the eye, says

Craig. Further, the potential for breakage is minimal when it comes to shipping and installation, in part because LEDs do not contain filaments or tubing. And since LEDs do not use or contain the gases or elements, there is no need to contain, replace, or dispose of potentially difficult substances, such as mercury.

Craig notes, for example, that repairing a non-functioning neon sign would normally require replacement of the entire structure or, at least, sending the sign back to the manufacturer’s shop to replace intricate tubing or delicate gases. By comparison, repairing a “broken” LED sign usually requires no more than replacing some individual bulbs.

As well, unlike a neon sign, which generally represents a single glass tube, a typical LED business sign comprises many separate lights, making it suitable for animation and other versatile design options.

From backlit advertising and displays, to channel-letter and edge-lighting systems, the popular applications for LEDs will only expand as developers work to overcome the limitations and improve the technology of LEDs for signage. Refining the brightness, power usage and cost efficiency of white LEDs, for example, could facilitate the use of LEDs in retrofitting existing signs.

For his part, Sunitron’s Pappa cites pylon signs—large signs affixed to the ground that offer high visibility—as a trend that is destined grow as it capitalizes on emerging LED technologies. “LEDs are getting better and better all the time,” he says. “They are the light of the future.” IM

A look back in time How two business geniuses long ago, changed modern advertising and brand marketing forever

It’s difficult to conceive in this Twittering, Facebooking, instant-messaging, digital billboard, texting, emailing day and age, but a long time ago, scholars and governments were concerned with overloading the public with too much advertising.

We’ve come a long way thanks to two geniuses and their discoveries of lithography and chromolithographic, four-colour, mass-produced poster printing. Few brand-marketing strategies have influenced the entire sign industry as deeply.

The beginning of brand advertising has its roots in 1796, when Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography, and Godefroy Engelmann, who patented chromolithographic printing in 1837, made their indelible marks on the sign and image making industry.

Their discoveries were the beginning of mass advertising and kicked down the doors to creativity.

Before their printing process discoveries, black and white posters with simple text and illustrations were the only means of getting messages to the public, aside from newspapers, which at the time lacked creativity.

By the mid-1800’s, European artists were augmenting their incomes with advertising art for the newly mass-produced four colour poster medium.

The Advertising Poster Boom The incredible French artist Henri de ToulouseLautrec plied his talents to promote the Moulin Rouge, while Alphonse Mucha, Eugene Grasset and other renowned artists of this vibrant, fine art era created works for a variety of products.

The man behind this new media was a true entrepreneur and arguably, the world’s first advertising genius. In 1866, Jules Cheret opened a small print shop in Paris and set about hiring

artists to create advertising poster art for a variety of clients. He and his artists changed the face of advertising forever.

There were other advertising pioneers at work during this boom, including Thomas J. Lipton and William Hesketh Lever, who used their creative genius to grow Lipton teas and Sunlight soaps into the international successes they are today – all through the use of art in creative brand advertising.

“Any fool can make soap. It takes a clever man to sell it.” ~ Thomas J. Barrett One of the finest examples of the use of art in advertising was when Thomas Barrett married into the Pears soap family business. The sedate and formal business was quickly changed in the 1860’s when Barrett, often referred to as the father of modern advertising, purchased the use of John Everet Millais’ famed painting of a young relative, titled Bubbles.

Barrett had a bar of Pears soap painted into the foreground of the portrait and faithfully reproduced chromolithographic fine art posters of the work. The use of this new advertising medium virtually guaranteed the future success of Pears soap worldwide.

The new poster medium quickly spread throughout Europe and to North America, where

advertisers began using the creative talents of artists to promote their brands.

North American companies incorporated this new style of poster art into their advertising campaigns. Coca-Cola, Quaker Oats, Campbell’s Soup, American Tobacco and many others called on the skills of such artists as Haddon H. Sundblom, Andrew Wyeth, Nor man Rockwell to help build their brands into the worldwide franchises they are today.

In 1889, the first 24-sheet colour billboard was used at the Paris Exposition, followed in 1893 by the first American billboard at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The potential for this new medium was soon recognized by advertisers and used around the world to become a multi-billion dollar business.

B y t h e t u r n o f t h e 2 0 t h c e n t u r y, chromolithographic printing had spawned burgeoning industries comprised of advertising agencies, printing companies, designers, and sign and image makers, launching a brand new era of the art of advertising persuasion that has never looked back.

Everything you need to know about Scientific Research and Experimental Development

It’s a mouthful to say, but when it comes to scientific research and experimental development in the sign manufacturing industry, it’s no different than any other, in fact, SR&ED is more prevalent than you may think.

Unfortunately, many companies do not believe they engage in any qualifying SR&ED activities.

The SR&ED program is the largest single source of federal government support for research and development. Every year, the SR&ED program provides over $6-billion to more than 18,000 claimants.

The SR&ED tax credit program is for Canadian companies that develop new or improve existing products or processes, and its goal is to help Canadian companies maintain manufacturing in Canada. It has been in existence for over 20 years and is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, but the SR&ED department is totally separate from the regular tax department, so no information is shared between the two departments.

The CRA administers the program with a staff of engineers who can assess scientific process.

Both public and private companies can benefit from the SR&ED program.

Publically owned companies can earn 20% of qualified expenditures as tax credits or refunds. Privately owned Canadian companies (CCPC’s) can qualify for up to 35% of qualified expenditures as tax credits or refunds.

Additionally CCPC’s can also qualify for additional provincial tax credits ranging from 10% to 37.5% of qualified expenditures.

In your own business, some of the issues that come to mind may be: Uneven lighting of products Vacuum forming LEDs replacing incandescent New materials, and dealing with shadows on products.

How you deal with these issues becomes the basis of your SR&ED claim.

Identifying your innovation is the key. You may not think that your company is innovative because you work in it everyday. The success of a project is not an issue when claiming; in fact, your failures are as valuable as your successes.

The CRA looks at your knowledge base and your advancement of this knowledge only.

Three criteria your project needs to meet in order to claim for SR&ED are: • Technological advancement • Technological uncertainty (Obstacles) and • Technological content Each project must have these three elements in order for the project to apply for the SR&ED program.

Technological advancement is your company’s advancement in its knowledge base.

Even if failures develop, the project qualifies if you can show that you learned something.

Technological uncertainty (now referred to as technological obstacles) are the hurdles that you encountered in trying to develop the product or process. When you take on a new project, you do not know if it is going to work, so you have to identify what you did not know.

Technological content is the work that you performed and clearly identifying what exactly was done for the project.

Identifying this work can be a difficult and time consuming for a layperson as you look back on what work has been done, but the benefits do out weigh the difficulties.

You can go as far back as 18 months from your last FYE (Fiscal Year End).

The SR&ED Program can minimize your taxes owing, maximize your net worth, and increase your cash flow. IM

Art and commerce collide The intricate world of a sign-painting artist

It’s no surprise artists are feeling the pinch during these troubling economic times, but over the years, artists have faced many challenges, not the least of which is technology.

Art and technology often meet for many working in the sign industry.

Rapidly expanding new technologies can either hinder or greatly assist an artist in their work, but for purists, computer generated technology can never take the place of an artisan’s hand.

It takes years of practice and hard won stamina to become good at any one thing and for Pierre Tardiff, a childhood passion, watching stock car races as a young boy, admiring the lettering on the sides of the cars, has grown into a labour of love and a full time career.

But technology has reared its ugly head in his business more than once.

He’s called, “Lettrage Pierre Tardiff and he can tell the era of a sign’s historical s i g n i f i c a n c e w i t h i n a b o u t f i ve ye a r s.

His father once told the Quebec City

entrepreneur that he would have to work for himself, because no one else would hire him. Good advice for the now successful sign artist who has run his own company since he was 18 years old.

As with any business, there have been many difficulties.

In 1988, just before the computer craze, “Being a sign painter was not a big investment and there were only about 35 or 40 painters in Quebec,” Tardiff says.

But post-1988, those numbers spiked to over 300 paint shops in just five years.

Computer generated images on vinyl and leather made the once unique business highly competitive, and as Tardiff recalls, “No one cared so much about quality as about the price.”

So in 1993, Tardiff caved in and bought a computer. But after only a year of the computer-generated work, he decided it just was not for him. Call him a purist, Tardiff packed up shop and went out on the road, with his one and only employee at the time, and began to do window splash advertisements.

Together they painted for car dealers, furniture stores, fast food restaurants, and after a couple of years, business was so good they could hardly keep up with work.

They were one of the first to utilize Tyvek, (material used on the outside of

homes before the wood or vinyl siding is put up), for ads for a variety of big chains like Harvey’s and Little Ceaser’s. “Tyvek is mainly used for home construction, but it can be bought blank for the graphic industry, it’s tough and can withstand a lot,” says Tardiff.

Soon, Tardiff had 10 employees churning out window splashes, but then technologic advances and artistic endeavors collided once ag ain, and digital printer s came along, “That combined with globalization, killed the window advertising for us,” says Tardiff.

Tardiff ’s company, P. Tardif Inc., went through a major contraction again – from 10 employees doing window ad splashes and a healthy $500,000 a year, to under $100,000.

The car dealers, and fast food restaurants a l l b e g a n t o r e c e i ve d i g i t a l g r a p h i c s from their various head offices and were n o l o n g e r a l l owe d t o h ave t h e i r ow n advertising, “As a way to keep messaging uniform, all the decisions were made out of their head offices, and so we lost major customers,” says Tardiff.

That was when Tardiff returned to his roots and went back to lettering.

Now the bulk of his work is in vintage sign reproduction. A few years back he did the signs on set for the Johnny Depp film, Secret Window.

Currently Parks Canada has ordered some signs for historic sites across Canada, and Tardiff is always busy painting about 10 to 12 vintage trucks ever year.

One of the more significant historical pieces, and which Tardiff is proud of is the restoration and recreation of the gold leaf ornament on a steam fire engine in the town of St. Jean Richelieu, circa, 1876.

As an artist, Tardiff says his work, like all signs throughout history, tell a story, and brings back to life pieces of the past.

It’s a good thing too, as technology and art will always collide, but Lettrage, Pierre Tardiff is proof there is a way, once you work through all the kinks, for the two to coincide peacefully. IM
