s the fall season is now upon us, let me share a word or two about our Ride to Conquer Cancer’s wind-swept ride weekend. Despite having to complete this event on one of the windiest and stormiest weekends in B.C.’s history, Team MCABC pulled through! As both a participant and an observer at this event, the ride taught me a great deal about who and what we are, as an organization. Pull a dozen intrepid cyclists from the expanded ranks of membership, find a fearless leader with the organizational skills to rally the troops, set some goals to train and to raise money, then have everyone show up to ride 240 kilometers in gale-force winds.

Did we have fun? The answer for all involved, I believe, was an unequivocal YES. We raised in excess of $40k too. Under the amazing leadership of John Fu, we pulled together a disparate crew that performed and felt like a team. We raised awareness about the need to fund research to treat and cure a terrible disease that impacts nearly everyone — sufferers, survivors and supporters alike.

It was such a rewarding experience; in fact, many members of this year’s Team MCABC are already discussing the possibility of doing this again next year!

The fall brings with it preparations for what seems like a new season of activities. The last of the golf tournaments are completed and the clubs put away for another year. MCABC’s Education Program kicks into gear as companies plan and schedule their training needs and the focus shifts once again to business that, to this point, was often interrupted by summer vacations. At MCABC, the association’s many and various boards and committees are called into action now that everyone is again available.

I have commented previously on an emerging mechanical contractors’ interest group that MCABC has helped to facilitate. For the past two years, at the behest of two MCABC members, the association organized meetings that created a space for mechanical contractors to discuss the pressing issues of our time. An invitation was sent to a select list of contractors who all find themselves competing in the same areas of work. Initially, the group gathered to discuss the prevalence of the practice of owners or their representatives purchasing equipment and fixtures directly from wholesalers or manufacturers rather than as ‘supplied and installed’ by the contractor. The impact of a broadcast awareness of the meeting by itself seemed to have an impact on that behavior — that plus the individual contact by the contractor with his wholesaler. The issue hasn’t gone away, even though it might have seemingly diminished, which is reason to keep it top-of-mind.

Another issue is prompt payment. MCA Canada, our national association, had issued a federal election kit and advisory to all regions, which we in turn made available to you via the MCA Canada website. In addition we were able to raise awareness about need for prompt payment legislation among the federal election candidates. In addition to asking members to use the online mailing to candidates MCABC was able to conduct a survey of candidates to determine their support of our request, and we broadcasted the results to members and the media.

The group has realized that there is a host of issues negatively impacting good trade business practices and those topics have been raised at subsequent meetings. Now called the Mechanical Contractors Advisory Council, the group (members and non-members) continues to meet a targeted three times annually to review a host of topics and conduct presentations on subjects of general interest. Our goal is to show all mechanical contractors the enormous value in being part of an association that exists for the very reason to serve and to advocate on behalf of mechanical contractors in this province. We make things happen and with a collectively larger voice, can do even more. Remember, as a member, you are this association, and you can help us grow and make a difference.

A

fter a long unprecedented summer heat-spell, the long-anticipated fall season has returned, bringing with it cool crisp air, replenished water reservoirs, and of course, plenty of new reason to get involved with MCABC. As you will have noticed in our spring and summer communications, MCABC assembled a team of 12 dynamic riders to partake in the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer. This team trained hard leading up to the big ride weekend and prepared (both mentally and physically) for their two-day cycling trip from Vancouver, BC to Seattle, WA., on August 29-30, 2015.

With the help of our team captain, John Fu, Team MCABC embarked on this speedy adventure covering more than 200km of terrain.

Not only did the team reach their minimum fundraising goals, they exceeded it! With your generous support, and the hard work of our team members, we raised more than $40K in the fight against cancer.

I’m proud to say that this year’s Team MCABC and their Ride to Conquer Cancer was dedicated to long-time MCABC member and industry friend, Clint Cassia. Collectively, the team rallied behind Clint to support him as he battles with cancer. In fact, earlier this past August, Team MCABC threw a pub night fundraiser in Clint’s name, honouring him with an official team vest and raising over $5,000 in one evening for the BC Cancer Foundation!

Thank you to everyone who made a donation to support our brave and dedicated cyclists. And thank you to our cyclist who pushed the limits of their physical limitations and reached new levels of fundraising success. Each of your financial contributions will play a significant role in accelerating the conquest of cancer.

This fall, we started a new seminar for our members. Due to the overwhelming success of our spring Service Contractors’ seminar, we’ve instated a new perennial MCABC seminar called, “Service Contractors Strategies” aimed at helping contractors better understand strategies for securing satisfied customers, communicating value, guaranteeing long-term clients, and determining technologies that will improve operations and business. This two-part program will repeat next spring, so be sure to keep an eye out for its return.

Also, don’t forget about MCA Canada’s national conference which will be held November 16 — 19, 2015 at the Omni Ranchos Las Palmas Resort & Spa in magnificent Palm Springs, California. Hope to see you there!

MCABC’s annual golf season has officially come to a close for 2015. With seven association tournaments under our belts, and an upward of 80-200 golfers per tournament, we can confidently say that we’ve achieved another big year of golf success. As is done each year, our golf committees make a conscious effort to support our local provincial charities and make social responsibility a necessary priority. To date, our committees have raised approximately $7,000 for a variety of important charities throughout B.C. Well done, everyone.

Sincere appreciation goes out to my fellow board members, committee members, and our hard working staff (Dana, Jane, Rivka, and Berry). Thanks to the commitment and devotion shared by all of the people who make up this organization, MCABC continues to strengthen its foundation, expand its community and build its reputation for professional industry excellence. Innovative Energy Supply

ual Mechanical Ltd. of Surrey is no stranger to complicated projects. In fact, this company is quickly gaining a reputation for its expertise in wastewater and alternative energy development. Dual Mechanical Ltd. received a Gold award from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA) in 2012 for the mechanical systems at the Annacis Wastewater Centre in Vancouver, B.C. Fulfilling Ladner-based Seabreeze Farm Ltd.’s plan to use anaerobic digestion to provide energy domestically was a new and exciting challenge.

It also earned the company another 2015 Gold Award.

Engineered and supported by CH Four Biogas, a company specializing in anaerobic digestion, the Seabreeze project would convert manure from 250 milking cows into natural gas for about 1,000 Metro Vancouver homes. The manure would also be turned into cost-efficient cow bedding and a solid, compacted nutrient for use as fertilizer.

In order to achieve this, an anaerobic digester bio-gas plant had to be built that would produce the methane gas; the excess nutrients from the digester would, thanks to a Trident Bedding and Nutrient Recovery System, be converted into fibre for the auxiliary products. Additionally, a Trident Nutrient Recovery System would convert the remaining liquid material into water and concentrated NPK nutrients.

For Dual Mechanical Ltd. estimator/project manager Stuart Burnside, the project correlated nicely with the skills of his colleagues. “We’ve worked on manure conversion projects in the past in the Fraser Valley, albeit on a small scale, and on a personal level I’ve been in plumbing for 30 years and love work that is new and challenging.”

Following a feasibility study carried out in 2010, Dual Mechanical Ltd was contacted about a year ago by Kloot Construction, Seabreeze’s general contractor, and construction began in the spring of 2014. Dual was responsible for the heating, domestic water,

drainage and process piping for the project, and it consulted extensively with CH Four Biogas to determine the correct components for the manure conversion process.

Burnside said that “In some ways, even projects of this scope are basically pipe jobs, running from A to B with the challenge being to ensure there are no leaks. But on a regulatory level alone, things have changed. For wastewater projects, it’s essential you use the right materials for the project.”

The three tanks comprising the plant are a 2500m3 manure digester, a 20-foot liquids tank for organic oils, and a same-size hydrolyzer tank for food waste from Metro Vancouver. The heating component for the digester required “thirteen kilometers of pipe, with 24 runs around its circumference,” says Burnside.

Unlike in past projects, the construction of the tanks required crews to do more than merely wrap the pipes around the structures.

ing the pipe had to be threaded through webbing between the layers of skin comprising the tank walls. “It took four people an entire week to complete,” says Burnside.

Adjustments to equipment procurement and contracting ultimately benefitted the project.

Originally, hydraulics would have opened and closed gates within the processing plant, but electric motors were chosen instead. “It would be one less thing to go wrong,” explains Burnside. “How-

Originally Dual Mechanical Ltd earmarked a local company to build two 15-foot flare towers for the plant, but the owners instead went with an American firm and Burnside says the outcome was favourable. “Although there was a lot of back and forth to make sure everything was CSA approved, we actually achieved a significant cost savings,” he says.

A variety of pumps were required for both the processing and heating portions of the waste conversion, and special attention was given to the 20-horsepower pump that would sit at the bottom of the hydrolyzer tank. “It had to operate reliably and handle six loads of waste daily from Metro Vancouver,” says Burnside.

Components for the pump came from Switzerland and Peru and were assembled in Ontario, but when the pump arrived on site and was tested, it was discovered that it had been assembled incorrectly. In collaboration with the manufacturer, “we had to take it apart and reassemble,” laughs Burnside.

Dual Mechanical Ltd is heavily involved in another project for the client: the installation of a generator to power the entire farm and back feed into the BC Hydro line. Burnside says, “Feasibility testing is underway, and we’re

also busy working on the system to extract sulfur from the gas produced at Seabreeze…that should be installed by the end of 2015.”

Doug Stout, FortisBC’s vice-president of energy solutions and external relations, told media that while projects like Seabreeze represent

energy solutions that are still in their early days, his company is evaluating large participants and is optimistic about future growth: “We would see potentially 2 to 3 per cent of our total natural gas distributed coming from renewable natural gas in the next few years.” PM

enacity helped Stewart Lageri take his first professional step into the fire protection installation business. And that same staying power has kept him there for more than 35 years. It was 1978 and Lageri had just completed his six-month, pre-apprenticeship training program at Victoria’s Camosun College for plumbing and pipe fitting. Ready for a job in the industry, Lageri secured it in a most unusual way.

“There was a Vancouver sprinkler contractor in town,” explains Lageri. “So, I went down to the job site — it was actually the Dominion Hotel on Yates Street — and I sat in the lobby for a week until the superintendent showed up on the Friday and said: You’re hired. Start Monday.”

Mission accomplished, Lageri says this made him “the first sprinkler fitter apprentice in Victoria”. At the time, he says, all apprentices were part

of the Vancouver union. “The local union 324 in Victoria didn’t have any jurisdiction for sprinkler fitting,” adds Lageri. “So they couldn’t officially start any apprentices.”

Although it took him five days to land that first position, Lageri remained undeterred. “I was basically killing time until I could get into the trade,” he explains. Before canvassing for jobs in the plumbing industry, Lageri worked on the white

fleet tie gangs in Alberta, replacing railroad ties and briefly drove a dump truck in Ucluelet.

Born in Victoria, pipe and sprinker fitting is all in the family for Lageri whose brothers are both pipe fitters. Lageri’s two sons are also journeymen sprinkler fitters. “My oldest son is now in the office with me,” says Lageri. “He’s my estimator/project manager. My youngest son . . . works out on the job site.”

Lageri started small in 1993 when he and his wife opened SRL Fire Protection Ltd. in Saanich (SRL for his name, Stewart Ronald Lageri).

“I started it by renting a threading machine,” recalls Lageri. Now two successful decades later: “Our crews go up [in size] with the availability of work, depending on the number of buildings being built. But we do have our nucleus of employees, and that’s ten.”

Managing in the current economy means business fluctuates with the season and the market. “In this industry, you’re only as busy as the construction,” concludes Lageri.

The majority of SRL Fire Protection’s recent work is a combination of wood frame condominiums and highrise concrete buildings with limited commercial and institutional work while at the same time running a 24 hour service, inspection and maintenance division.

ages the office with every confidence in his crews. “I have the young guns out there,” explains Lageri. “My guys are so good: we handpicked them over the years. A lot of them were top of their class so I don’t need to go out to the field and micro-manage them.”

Over the years, Lageri has given back to the industry that gambled on him years ago. From 1993 to 1997, he took an instructor training program in Ann Arbor, Michigan sponsored by the United Association of Journeymen, Plumbers and Pipefitters of North America. “I am a certi-

A member of the Mechanical Contractors Association of B.C. since opening SRL Fire Protection in 1993, Lageri finds it a helpful resource. “MCABC caters to a lot of different aspects of the trade . . . and there’s always something you can draw from it,” he states. “They do have good information on how to run service companies.”

Lageri recognizes fire protection sprinkler installation has changed since his start, and not always for the better. “It’s gotten to the point now where anyone with a glue pot, a six-foot ladder and a hack saw can pretty much go install sprinklers in a house or a wood frame condominium,” he notes. “They still need to be inspected and they still need to be installed by

Rainwater Harvesting Applications

ainwater Harvesting ( RWH) has been practiced for millennia.

From ancient settlements to medieval castles to modern day high-rises, humans have collected rainwater to ensure a steady supply of water for later re-use. The practice subsided in the past century in urban environments due to improvements in modern water treatment and delivery systems but has always been used in remote locations and underdeveloped areas that have limited access to water and power. With aging infrastructure and lack of funds to replace it, there is a resurgence in the practice of RWH to meet the needs for non-potable water demand in urban areas.

RWH is an affordable solution to the increased demand for an alternate water source.

Extended drought is an ongoing challenge throughout North America.

Many regions have experienced extended periods of low rainfall that have severely strained municipal water reserves. RWH is being viewed as a partial solution to this ongoing challenge. Why not collect as much as possible and use it on site? Rain water can be used for almost all non-potable uses from toilet flushing, laundry, washing cars and irrigating gardens. Does it make sense to flush toilets with drinking water? With the green movement there has been greatly improved education and awareness on how to develop and build in a sustainable fashion. Humans are starting to realize that there are limits to the resources we take for granted on a daily basis.

RWH has gained wide spread adoption all throughout Europe’s most advanced nations. Approx. 50,000 RWH systems are installed in Germany each year. France, the UK and most other European countries are building greener homes and installing RWH systems. There is a wide range of modern products and technologies available to facilitate the use of rainwater and bring it into the homes in a responsible manner. The allowable uses of rainwater vary from country to country but toilet flushing, laundry and outdoor uses are the most common.

Large commercial and public buildings primarily do toilet flushing.

There is a growing interest among large manufacturing facilities that use large volumes of water for cleaning and cooling process where potable water is not required. Massive roof areas can collect massive amounts of water.

Agriculture is another great candidate for RWH: large dairy, poultry and greenhouse operations have huge roof areas and use huge volumes of water. Treatment may be required for some uses but treating rainwater is often the easiest water to treat compared to well water and surface water. Water use restrictions and growing costs are requiring agricultural producers to look at alternate sources of water. Large rainwater storage systems can also provide water for fire protection for properties that do not have access to municipal water supplies.

RWH is also a viable source for potable water supplies. People that live on the West Coat Islands and remote areas may have RWH as the only option to provide a continuous source of clean water for whole house use. There are thousands of potable systems in these areas. It is always recommended to use approved treatment methods when treating rainwater for drinking water supply. RWH systems can also be used as an emergency water source in case of emergency and natural disaster. If every home had 3-5,000 gallons of water on hand, disaster situations may not be so dire.

There is growing interest in Net Zero sustainable development across Canada and various developers are building large projects to the highest building standards available for energy efficiency and low water consumption. With the high cost of water, waste water and storm water infrastructure this may be the only way development can con-

tinue in areas where the cost of infrastructure is so high that development may have to cease without adding infrastructure that is too costly to afford. Some developments are installing RWH systems with every new home that is built. RWH is also a form of stormwater retention which can help ease the burden on storm sewers in high rainfall events.

RWH is an affordable solution to the increased demand for an alternate water source. In most regions of B.C. we have enough rainfall to meet a minimum of 50 per cent of household water demands.

Many interesting projects have been implemented in B.C.: Ice Arenas — For making ice and filling the ice maintenance machines.

Fire Halls — For filling tankers, washing trucks and emergency backup supply.

Public Housing — Watering community gardens.

Public Works — Filling mobile equipment and washing of vehicles.

Secondary Education — Toilet flushing and irrigation in LEED and Living Building Challenge projects. Irrigation of green roofs and living walls.

Residential — Large systems for not potable uses and irrigation.

Industrial — Plastic Recycler uses RWH to wash scrap plastic.

Steel fabricator fills tanks for pressure testing and recycles water. Plastic fabricator uses rainwater for tank testing and onsite washing.

Commercial — Shopping mall installs catchment to fill mobile tanks for tree watering. Landscaper installs system for filling mobile tanks for tree watering.

Aquarium — Non potable wash down applications.

IAQ for Healthy Buildings

he continued drive towards more sustainable building design, construction, and operation has begun to expand its focus from improvements in the building energy efficiency towards making buildings better for the people inside them. A key aspect of this is providing improved indoor air quality (IAQ) to ensure we have a healthy environment. The LEED rating system contains credits focusing on indoor air quality such as minimum ventilation and filtration requirements, and the WELL building standard is an emerging rating system that focuses on quantitative measurements of indoor air quality (among other health aspects) to promote healthy buildings. Achieving these ratings helps to distinguishe buildings that have been designed with the occupant in mind.

Air quality is measured based on the concentration of pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon dioxide (CO2), and other gas pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene.

These pollutants are introduced to a building in a number of ways such as human activity, inflow of dirty outdoor air, release from mechanical 18

equipment, off-gassing from building materials, or even from cleaning activities.

Guidelines for acceptable concentrations for many pollutants are outlined by the World Health Organization and Health Canada. The concentrations of these pollutants is important for building occupants as they can cause ad-

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has estimated that changes in commercial and

institutional building characteristics can reduce the rate of infectious respiratory disease in the general population by 10 to 30 per cent corresponding to an annual economic benefit of $6 to $19 billion. Additional benefits can also be found for reductions in asthma and other acute health symptoms. A recent report from the World Green Building Council indicates that improvements to air quality in office buildings can result in an 8-11 per cent increase in worker productivity. The potential benefits of improved indoor air quality significantly outweigh the costs to implement improvements in building design and operation.

The IAQ in a building is largely controlled through the design and operation of the building mechanical systems. Two main methods of controlling pollutant levels with the mechanical system include dilution through effective ventilation and removal through filtration.

The ASHRAE Indoor Air Quality Guide provides guidance on methods to provide good IAQ throughout all phases of construction and operation.

Dilution through Effective Ventilation Standards for ventilation are provided in ASHRAE Standard 62.1 for commercial and high-rise residential buildings and Standard 62.2 for low-rise residential buildings. The ventilation flowrates in the prescriptive path to meeting these standards are based on controlling the build-up of CO2 within the space.

The ventilation system should be designed to provide the minimum airflow required by these standards. Additional guidance is also provided for designing ventilation rates based on control of pollutants to specific desired indoor concentration limits.

System maintenance is another important factor in ensuring that all spaces of a building have the required ventilation rates. Maintenance at all levels of the mechanical system can contribute to ensuring proper ventilation levels. Coils and filters become contaminated with dust during operation and impose increased static pressure on the system that can result in reductions in airflow if not cleaned or replaced. Drift of CO2 sensors in demand controlled ventilation systems can cause reduced provision of airflow rate if recalibration is not performed. Testing, adjusting and balancing of the airflow within the building system can potentially identify changes in ventilation rates to spaces that can be fixed with modified damper and motor settings.

Active Removal of Contaminants IAQ can also be maintained by controlling the contaminant levels directly through preventing their ingress to or actively removing them from the indoor environment.

A large source of pollutants to the indoor environment is the outdoor air. Air pollution is

generated from natural processes such as wind storms or forest fires as well as anthropogenic sources such as industrial and transportation emissions. These pollutants can be kept out of the building by reducing the infiltration through the building envelope and by proper placement of outdoor air vents to limit exposure to concentrated pollutants from vehicle exhaust.

Pollutants that are generated indoors or have found their way into the building can be removed directly to improve IAQ. Examples are effective placement of exhaust air sources such as range hoods to control particle emissions from cooking, exhaust grilles in printer rooms, or dust control in mechanical shop facilities.

Air filtration can also be provided to remove particles (particle air filters) or gas phase pollutants (carbon filters) either as a component of the central HVAC system or as portable

units placed in specific rooms. Better IAQ can be achieved through installation of more efficient filters but often comes at the cost of higher flow resistance and the potential for reduced ventilation.

As the industry moves towards an emphasis on healthy building performance the need to provide high quality indoor environments will become more prevalent. An understanding of how system components impact air quality can help building designers and mechanical contractors improve the health of building occupants through the construction of new buildings as well as retrofits to improve environments in the existing building stock. Safety Culture in the Workplace How to Finally Measure it By: Mike McKenna, Executive Director BCCSA

Companies with strong cultures are ones that engage their staff, listen to them and make them part of the decision making process.

I

n its simplest terms, workplace culture is defined as the character and personality of a company. The beliefs, behaviours, and attitudes that you and your staff share goes a long way in determining productivity, happiness and job satisfaction. But how do you really know that employees are satisfied? Are you a type of company that spouts cliché after cliché when trying to instill a culture and hope what you are saying sticks?

“There’s no I in team”, “work smarter not harder”, “think outside the box”.

These types of statements, while positive and motivating in certain situations, don’t really provide employees with a lot of understanding or information into what it means to work for your company. Companies with strong cultures are ones that engage their staff, listen to them and make them part of the decision making process.

When it comes to construction safety culture, it is no different. Most organizations reach the point of having invested time and effort getting their health and safety management systems right but recognize that a different approach is required if they really want to ‘change the way things are done around here’. They recognize they need to engage with their people more effectively and inspire safety leadership in order to improve their safety culture and make improvements in their health and safety performance.

The question has and will continue to be: “How do you improve safety culture”? As with corporate culture, safety culture is a combination of shared values, beliefs and habitual working practices that influence human behaviour and subsequently safety performance. Where do you begin?

After much research, the BCCSA chose to bring the Safety Climate Tool (SCT) to B.C. What is the Safety Climate Tool? The SCT is a powerful software-based perception survey consisting of 40 statements which map eight key factors, namely: accidents & near miss reporting, organizational commitment, health & safety oriented behaviours, health & safety trust,

usability of procedures, engagement in health & safety, peer group attitude and resources for health and safety, that measure employee’s attitudes on health and safety issues within their company.

Developed in the UK by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), one of the world’s leading providers of health and safety, the SCT has been used extensively since 1999 in providing “unique insight into a company’s safety culture, and evidence-based suggestions for improving it”.

The survey is easy to administer, can be customized, including management statements of support and can be tailored to the language and terms used in a company’s workplace.

Once the survey is complete, the tool produces a series of automated charts that allows for detailed analysis of the results. The software also generates a summary report highlighting the key findings from the survey and provides hints and tips to improve a company’s safety culture.

It provides a snapshot at a given point and time which a company can use to benchmark where they are at, instill changes and develop initiatives around the findings and provide a roadmap to success.

Sometimes extra pay or bonuses for a job well done just isn’t enough.

It’s the intangibles that help a company thrive. When employees feel they are being heard and that management truly cares enough to make changes based on the feedback provided, you have started down a path to long term viability and a satisfied workplace.

The SCT is a powerful tool any organization small or large can use, which will assist in opening the lines of dialogue between management, supervisor and front line worker to pave the way to a strong company culture and happier workplace. This fall, HAYS is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in Vancouver. The HAYS team has been serving the B.C. labour market for 10 years and many would agree that living and working in the city has influenced some positive changes over this last decade. Vancouver Economy Fastest Growing in Canada Vancouver is expected to have the fastest growing metropolitan economy in Canada this year, according to The Conference Board of Canada’s Metropolitan Outlook released September 23.

Vancouver is on track to post the fastest economic growth among 13 major cities in Canada with Toronto and Winnipeg rounding out the top three performers.

“Vancouver’s economy is on track to extend its streak of strong growth this year. In fact, 2015 will mark the fifth time in the past six years that growth in the region has topped 3 per cent,” said Alan Arcand, Associate Director, Centre for Municipal Studies. “The manufacturing sector will lead the way this year, but widespread gains are expected across all sectors of the city’s economy.”

In all, manufacturing output is expected to grow by an impressive 8.6 per cent in 2015. The services sector is also expected to see strong increases, led by wholesale and retail trade, which is expected to grow by 5 per cent due to strong employment. Finance, insurance, real estate and business services are all expected to see growth over 4 per cent.

Although construction output is expected to dip in 2015, the downturn is expected to be shortlived. Housing starts are expected to rise by 8.1 per cent to 20,800 units this year and remain near this level over the next couple of years. Similarly, non-residential construction will remain healthy, with work starting on a number of new projects and continuing on several others, including the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the Vancouver International Airport, and the Port Mann water supply tunnel.

Vancouver’s economy is forecast to expand by 3.4 per cent in 2015 and rise by a further 3.5 per cent in 2016. Hit hard by the slump in oil prices, Calgary and Edmonton face recession in 2015.

New Oil to Heat Pump Incentive Program Up to $1,700 per home is available to help British Columbians upgrade from oil heating to efficient electric air source heat pumps through the Oil to Heat Pump Incentive Program.

The program is funded by the B.C. Ministry of Energy and Mines’ Innovative Clean Energy (ICE) Fund and administered by City Green Solutions, a non-profit energy efficiency organization.

“With the cooler weather of fall and winter approaching this is an excellent time for homeowners to think about investing in energy efficient heating solutions. Incentives of up to $1,700 to upgrade from oil heat to electric heat pumps will make it easier for British Columbians to lower their heating bills and reduce household greenhouse gas emissions,” says Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines.

“An oil to heat pump upgrade is one of the most important things we can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing homes.

Participating homes’ typical carbon reductions will be better than taking a car off the road for 15 years,” explains Glenys Verhulst, Oil to Heat Pump Program Manager.

Heat pumps are very efficient home heating systems because they use only a small amount of electricity to move a large amount of heat, to provide comfortable temperatures in the home year-round.

An oil to heat pump upgrade will reduce a typical home’s energy bills by $1,300 to $2,700 every year, and will eliminate the risk of costly damage to air, soil, and waterways from home heating oil leaks.

Incentives are available on a first-come, firstserved basis while funds last.

New CIPH Chair Siân Smith was elected the 68th chairman of the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (CIPH) at the group’s annual meeting at Le Château Frontenac (Hotel) in Quebec City. Not only does Smith represent a generational shift, but she is the first woman to serve as CIPH chairman and the youngest ever CIPH chair. She is also fluent in French and English.

The 42-year-old married mother of two joined the industry with Emco in 1999 and today serves as senior director of strategic procurement for Noble Corporation, a wholesaler headquartered in Concord.

Canadian Students Earn ASHRAE Scholarships Three Canadian students are among 29 recipients of ASHRAE engineering scholarships for 2015-16. Since 1988, ASHRAE has awarded U.S. $1.45 million in financial assistance to more than 300 undergraduate and graduate students, including $152,000 for the pending school year.

Ivan Beentjes, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Waterloo, and Michael Newman, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Manitoba, received the Reuben Trane Scholarship, established to honour the memory of the innovative engineer, inventor and founder of Trane Co. The U.S. $10,000 (CAD $13,300) award will be bestowed over two academic years.

Michael Schlosser, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Windsor received the U.S. $5,000 (CAD $6,650) Frank M. Coda Scholarship, created in the memory of ASHRAE’s former executive vice president.

The scholarship program’s stated goal is to “motivate students and prospective students worldwide to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field”.

Global Qualifications The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) have agreed to work together on the development of a global qualifications program for refrigerant supply chain networks in response to the depleting ozone layer.

Known as “refrigerant driving license” (RDL), the program will target the sound and safe management of refrigerants and accelerate the transition to greener types.
