Moving Forward “If the work of mechanical contractors disappears, then so too will the justification for association.” The disrupters in this industry are many and various, from new technologies, shifting general contracting methods, de-unionization, to a general hand-wringing as people question, ‘what if people stop piping stuff?’ If we just focus on piping, I think most will agree that piping is here to stay, at least for the near-distant future.

In the association world, the Internet is the major disrupter. We hear the question, “Why do I need to join your organization when I can find anything I need online?” Here too is where we find ourselves examining the definition and role of innovation. Innovation means change.

MCABC is changing, but are we innovating? Your president makes reference to a transition plan taking effect over the next two years that will result in a changed organization with new and different leadership, at both the staff and board levels. The time allotted for transition will enable the membership and the board to determine what innovation is required to ensure that the organization has adapted to the disrupters that may challenge MCABC’s very existence.

No matter what is written or said of innovation, inevitably the actors in this process are people not things. Technologies, invented by people, will assist the process, but ultimately innovators are people. The president refers to the ‘Next Gen’ population of contractors who will not only inherit the future organization, but must also be involved in deciding its structure and operation. Whether they are participating as a shadow board of directors or leading activities and projects of special interest to their demographic, it’s clear their role will be to move MCABC forward by expelling whatever remains of an old boys club. We all share the capacity to innovate; our challenge to you is: Are you willing to commit to the effort to do so?

At 36 years old, Vanguard Mechanical owner Jacob Kuehne already has extensive mechanical contracting experience under his belt.

He is a third-generation plumber and although he is following in his grandfather's and father’s footsteps, he has firmly established his own name and niche in the industry.

“I take a lot of pride in being a thirdgeneration plumber — quite a legacy there,” says Kuehne, who has his ticket (red seal certification) in plumbing and gas along with a TECA design certificate. He is also gold seal certified in project management through the Canadian Construction Association. “My grandfather passed away this year. Without him being in the industry I do not think I would have become a plumber.”

The focus moving forward is to continue growing the company and solidifying its position as the leader in the wood-frame construction market. Kuehne believes the company’s “fresh approach” to the industry has been a key to its success.

“We’re still relatively young compared to the bulk of the industry,” he says. “We’re dealing more and more with people of our age who are like minded. There is a transition happening right now where the baby boomers are exiting and the next generation is taking over so how that’s going to unfold will be interesting to see.”
