It’s all about Jesus Jesus our Prophet Jesus our Priest Jesus our King
Talk 1 - It’s all about Jesus •
Hold on, isn’t it a bit weird to spend so much time thinking about Jesus? H. G. Wells Philip Schaff Napoleon Bonaparte James Allen Francis Albert Einstein C. S. Lewis
•
What pressures are on you to quietly (or loudly!) walk away from Jesus?
1. The Bible is all about Jesus “I want to remind you of the gospel [=good news] I preached to you… By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” (Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, extracts) “These are the Scriptures that testify about me.” (Jesus, in John 5:39)
2. The Bible is fulfilled by Jesus “Do not think I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” (Jesus, in Matthew 5:17-18) No matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. (Paul, in 2 Corinthians 1:20) Different kinds of fulfilment… •
Prophecies In the future, it will happen like this.
•
It happens just like that!
Shadows (or ‘Types’) i.

Jesus died on the cross to take our punishment and give us eternal life.
Wherever you are in the Bible, always ask “what does this tell me about Jesus?” •
It’ll give you the right perspective
•
It’ll stop you being self-obsessed
•
It’ll help you see why Jesus is “irresistibly the centre of history”
•
And you’ll actually learn more about yourself as a result!
3. In our studies in the book of Acts, we will see Jesus fulfilling the Bible’s promises Luke’s first book – Luke 1:1-4 Luke’s second book – Acts 1:1-2
•
“the things that have been fulfilled amongst us” (Luke 1:1) He said to them… “Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (Luke 24:25,27) [When Jesus had left them] they asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32) Then [with some other disciples] he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:45-49)
•
the continuing Acts of Jesus, fulfilling Scripture! (Acts 1:1) Acts 1:8 Jerusalem (ch.1-7) Judea & Samaria (ch.8-12) The ends of the earth (ch. 13-28)
SO: “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord… I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” (Paul in Philippians 3:8)

It’s all about Jesus Jesus our Prophet Jesus our Priest Jesus our King
Talk 2 – Jesus our Prophet Shadows
Reality
JESUS CHRIST “Certain of the prophets themselves became… Christs in type, so that all these have reference to the true Christ, the divinely inspired and heavenly Word, who is… the only high Priest of all, and the only King of every creature, and the Father’s only supreme Prophet of prophets."
- Eusebius of Caesarea (c. 265-340AD)
Q23: What offices doth Christ execute as our Redeemer? A: Christ, as our Redeemer, executeth the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation. Q24: How doth Christ execute the office of a prophet? A: Christ executeth the office of a prophet, in revealing to us, by his word and Spirit, the will of God for our salvation. Q25: How doth Christ execute the office of a priest? A: Christ executeth the office of a priest, in his once offering up of himself a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice, and reconcile us to God, and in making continual intercession for us. Q26: How doth Christ execute the office of a king? A: Christ executeth the office of a king, in subduing us to himself, in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies.

Jesus our Prophet: what does the Bible say? 1In
the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. (Heb 1:1-3) What’s changed? Which is best, “the past” or “these last days”? Why?
1. The shadow: prophets of the past •
“…at many times…” o o o o
o
•
“…in various ways…” o
•
Abraham (Genesis 20:7) Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15) – first 5 books of the Bible The “former prophets” – the main set of narrative history books – Joshua, Judges, 1&2 Samuel, 1&2 Kings The “latter prophets” “Major” prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah & Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel) “Minor” prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi) The “writings” – Psalms, Proverbs, Job, etc. NB David was a prophet (Acts 2:30!)
E.g. thunder and lightning, a talking donkey, visions and dreams, signs, visual aids, angelic messages, tablets of stone, writing on a wall… as well as in words (sometimes dictated, sometimes not).
“God spoke… through the prophets.” No prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. (2 Peter 1:20-21)
an enormous responsibility on both prophet and listeners! Deuteronomy 13:1-5; 18:14-22
a problem and a promise: i.
problem - people tell lies! Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds. … Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.” (Jeremiah 14:14; 23:16) Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. (Jesus, in Matthew 7:15) Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets. (Jesus, in Luke 6:26) There were false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies. (2 Peter 2:1)
ii.
promise – a new prophet “like Moses” Listen to my words: "When a prophet of the LORD is among you, I reveal myself to him in visions, I speak to him in dreams. 7But this is not true of my servant Moses … 8With him I speak face to face, clearly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD.” (Numbers 12:6) The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. (Moses, in Deuteronomy 18:15; cf. Acts 3:22 & 7:37) John the Baptist was the last of the Old Testament-type prophets. “Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.” (Jesus, in Matthew 11:11, 13-14, echoing a promise in Malachi 4:5 and Isaiah 40:3)
2. The reality: Jesus the ultimate prophet •
Many who saw Jesus concluded that he was a prophet, or even “The” prophet Mt 14:5; 21:11, 46; Mk 6:15; Lk 4:24; 7:16; 24:19; Jn 4:19; 6:14; 7:40; 9:17
•
Jesus himself accepted the title Mt 13:57; Mk 6:4; Jn 4:44
Jesus is greater than Moses! Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what
3. Why is Jesus the ultimate prophet? 1In
the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. (Hebrews 1:1-3) 1In
the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. … 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " … 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. (John 1)
SO WHAT? John 14:6-10 no-one comes to the Father except through Jesus if we know Jesus, we know the Father John 15:20-24 if we hate Jesus, we hate the Father John 17:25-26 Jesus is still making the Father known today!
“…in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. … We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard!” (Hebrews 1:1-3; 2:1)

Talk 4: Jesus our King
Peter’s confession of the Christ (Matthew 16:13‐19) 16
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
Messiah (Hebrew) = Christ (Greek) = God’s anointed King
1) David the model King a) Israel reject God as their King Judges 17:6, 18:1, 19:1, 21:25; 1 Samuel 8:7, 12:17
b) David as Israel’s model King
2) The promise of a better King
a) The ‘forever’ King of David’s line 2 Samuel 7 / 1 Chronicles 17
b) The ruling (divine) King who will judge the nations Psalm 2, 110
Psalm 16, 45, Isaiah 9, Daniel 7
c) The Spirit filled King who proclaims justice and freedom Isaiah 11:1‐7, 16:5, 32:1‐3, 61
d) The righteous branch who saves the remnant Jeremiah 23:1‐7, 30:6‐11, 33:14‐18, Isaiah 4:2, 11:10‐16
e) The humble shepherd King who brings rest Ezekiel 34, Ezekiel 37:15‐28, Micah 5:1‐5, Zech 9, 14
Question: How is the Jesus you know like these prophesies, and how is he unlike them? 3) Jesus the true King
4) Jesus our King a) The King is coming 11
Revelation 19: I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, 12 whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on 13 (I) him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and 14 his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on 15 white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron 16 scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
b) Following the King means obedience (which comes through faith) “This is my son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him” (Mt 17:5, Mk 9:7; similar in Lk 9:35)
God’s Anointed King in the OT Selected passages, NIV (2011) Genesis 49: 9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my Son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
Numbers 24: 15 Then he spoke his message: “The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly, 16 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened: 17
“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth.
Judges 17:6 (18:1, 19:1, 21:25). In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
1 Sam 8: 6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. 7 And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
1 Sam 12: 16 “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the LORD to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the LORD when you asked for a king.”
1 Chron. 17 (1 Sam 7): “‘I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you: 11 When your days are over and you go to be with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, one of your own sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He is the one who will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my love away from him, as I took it away from your predecessor. 14 I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will be established forever.’”
Ps 2. 1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, 3 “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6
“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. 12 Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way
will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Ps 16:10. Because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
Ps 45: 6 Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. 8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad. 9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
Ps 110: 1 The LORD says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of your enemies!” 3 Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb. 4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a brook along the way, and so he will lift his head high.
Isaiah 4:2. In that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors in Israel.
Isaiah 9: 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah 11: A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. 10
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. 11 In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the Mediterranean... 16
There will be a highway for the remnant of his people that is left from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt.
Isaiah 16:5: In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it — one from the house of David — one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.
Isaiah 32: See, a king will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice. 2 Each one will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land. 3 Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen. 4 The fearful heart will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear.
Isaiah 61: The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn,3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion.
Jeremiah 23: 3 “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. 4 I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the LORD. 5 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior. 7
“So then, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’ 8 but they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”
Jeremiah 30: 8 “‘In that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘I will break the yoke off their necks and will tear off their bonds; no longer will foreigners enslave them. 9 Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
Jeremiah 33: 14 “‘The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah. 15 “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: The LORD Our Righteous Savior.’
Ezekiel 34: 11 “‘For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. 12 As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. 23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them
and be their shepherd.24 I the LORD will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the LORD have spoken.
Ezekiel 37: 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.23 They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding, and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God. 24 “‘My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees. 25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever. 26 I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them forever.27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Dan 7: 13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
Micah 5: 2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” 3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. 4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
Zech. 9: 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.
Zech. 14: 8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter. 9 The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.
