Nowadays, being smart, hardworking, and intelligent aren’t enough to get you far at work. If you’re working on your own, then it’s alright to be your grouchy self. Unfortunately, many of you do have to join the work force, which means that you’ll have to work well with a team to get the company far. If the company you work for succeeds, then you’ll be fine as well. So, it’s time to put the game face on and know that you deserve to have friends at work. This is also for your own good because you do spend most of your time in the office, and this means that you have to make the situation great for you. You simply don’t want a career where you’ll be required to show up and then once there, you count the hours until the clock strikes five.

If you’re just shy, you need to realize that other people aren’t judging you the moment you walk into a room. Some of them may comment on what you wear or how you look, but they all know that what they say isn’t the complete truth as they have to know you more in order to make a better judgment. There’s nothing wrong about being reserved. If that’s how you are, then you can’t pretend to be overly friendly when you’re completely uncomfortable with what you’re doing. People will eventually sense that you’re trying to be someone you’re not. So, just make sure that you don’t come off as abrasive or rude. You don’t need to be part of the noisiest bunch in office get-togethers, but let people know that you’ll more than welcome their company and that while you may be quiet, they can count on you when they need somebody to talk to.

To be likeable to work, you also need to learn the value of selflessness. This means that while you’re always looking out for yourself, be willing to help others as well. If you’re good at what you do, then the bosses will definitely notice you. If you’re willing to extend your services to

your colleagues because you want the best for the team, you’ll definitely gain a lot of supporters along the way. Develop empathy and take interest on how the others are. You need to accept the fact that you can’t always do things alone and that in order to succeed, you must be aware of the needs of the people around you. If you come across someone who isn’t too friendly, carry on with what you’re doing and don’t sink to their level. You’ll see how much easier things can be for you.

Yes, you do need to sympathize, but at the same time, you also need to know that you don’t have to bend over backwards to please other people. Be sincere and stay positive. Make promises that you can deliver and once people see that you’re genuine, you’ll gain a lot of friends naturally. Plus, they’ll know you for who you are and not who you’re trying to become.
