DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

Welcome to the management, players, and supporters of Cockfosters ahead of this evening’s game. It is our 1st meeting with Cockfosters this season and like every game at this level we expect a tough contest. Cockfosters have lost only once in the last 6 games, so we know that just like the last week we need to ensure we get our performance levels right in every way to ensure we continue our recent upsurge in form.

What a difference a week makes in football and it’s fair to say we have had a pretty great week. 3 wins, 3 clean sheets, 4 goals, 4 different goal scorers and most importantly 9 points! I have mentioned it many times on my previous podcasts that I’m liking a lot of things I am seeing with my group of players at the moment. I see the game in a very clear way and I am seeing all my nonnegotiable’s being met by my group. Before you even get to the tactical and technical elements of football there are several basic pre-requisites I always believe should be hit consistently.

The key pre-requisite for me is always maximum effort is always the minimum requirement. There is never a player we have in the group that is allowed to deviate from that key principle and that is showing.

Do we have better technical and tactical footballers than we did when we arrived in October 2021? Of course we do, but it’s much more detailed than that. The reason we have better footballers is because we have much more driven and dedicated footballers. Our players are giving everything. The grit, desire, and effort my players are giving every single day is incredible. Am I a demanding Head Coach? You have all seen me, so you better believe I am. Those standards won’t change, and I have never bought into this nonsense “step 5 mentality” I hear so many others talk about. I have said before there is no such thing as a small detail, every detail that affects the outcome is a massive detail.

We have on average of 33 players training every single week and that is

further credit to the dedication they have. They knew that when they signed for me that training isn’t an option, we train as we play! 6 or 7 players training like at so many other clubs, leaves me bewildered. Full credit to the club for providing us with a full sized pitch every single week.

Training is an intense environment to say the least. There aren’t the rondos and people trying to nutmeg each other every 2 seconds! How many nutmegs do you see on a Saturday with a load of lads running around screaming and shouting, celebrating nutmegs? The environment has been too intense for some and that has led to them being moved on, but the intensity won’t change. It is the simplest equation in life, you buy in, or you move on! That is why I love this group of people they go above and beyond to be here. We have multiple players that have over a 3 hour round trip commute for training and games and that is testament to them as people.

I’ve said what feels like thousand times, we recruit players that are as effective in an August heatwave as they are in a freezing February. We are now in that freezing February, and we prepared for this months ago. Recruiting technical footballers that need time and space and carpets are of little use to us now. Whilst systems and shapes are important and the tactical nuances around strengths and weaknesses of each it is doing the basics that ultimately matter most. It is about winning 1st contacts, picking up 2nd balls, out working opponents and defending our box with our lives.

I’ll be delighted if we can make sure that at 10pm tonight we are 3 points better off and that is all I care about. Whilst I have been very praising of my groups

attitude, I must make it clear to everyone that there is not a tiny part of me that will allow me or others to get carried away. We face a Cockfosters side tonight that One of the really challenging things as a manager now is getting the balance right between rotation and momentum. Pitches are heavy, games are intense and throw in a 40-50 working week for the lads it is imperative myself and the coaches recognise when to rest and when to play players. Obviously having enough good players is always the thing you need to have to be able to rotate and what we don’t want to do is use 18 players a week.

Obviously 18 players comes at a massive cost to the club but just as importantly it can cause disruption with certain combinations. I have learned with this group of players that there is no point asking them how they are feeling as they are desperate to play and will often tell me they are fine. It is important we continue to monitor performance levels and make slight adjustments here and there. Sometimes unfortunately these decisions are out of my control with suspensions, injuries, and unavailability so we do need a degree of luck. The only way I can ever judge whether I got my decisions correct is if we win.

I am hopeful of another excellent atmosphere here at Creasey Park this evening and that at 10pm we are all able to smile and reflect on another win. I never take wins for granted as they are always hard to come by and never certain. What I do know for certain is I will never ever get bored of winning games and there is no better feeling in football than the final whistle and a win.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

“My role focuses on raising awareness of our club throughout the world. This includes awareness of the club in general and more specifically about our existence as a Community Benefit Society.

Mindful of the welcome I have been blessed with from Andrew, Peter, Management, Players, Staff and Supporters, I extend a warm welcome to our visitors Cockfosters Football Club.

We hope they are enjoying their time in our league since transferring from the Essex Senior League, and we wish them safe travel home after today’s match.

I felt connected to their club when I learned of two significant events in their history involving the year of my birth, 1962. They were the Premier Division Champions of the Northern Suburban Intermediate League.

They also won the Barnet Cup, which occurred during the 1962-63 season. They finished a respectable 9th last season in the Essex Senior League. They tied for 8th (out of 21 clubs) in Goals For and were 11th in Goals Allowed.

I want to tell you about my role as our International Ambassador. This honour was preceded by my becoming the club’s first Canadian Owner. I felt privileged to attend the AGM earlier this year. I felt part of the live audience and found it very well organized, informative, and enjoyable.

My role focuses on raising awareness of our club throughout the world. This includes awareness of the club in general and more specifically about our existence as a Community Benefit Society.

I hope to develop some ‘twinning’ relationships with other clubs. We have already received a favourable response from the Thunder Bay Chill club in Ontario, Canada. I want us to always be an example of positivity and friendship in this time of intense distress throughout the world.

This is my opportunity to tell you a bit about the state of football in my province of Nova Scotia. 1991 was the only season of existence for the Nova Scotia Clippers, which competed in the former Canadian Soccer League. They were coached by Gordon Hill, who played three seasons for Manchester United. The Clippers finished 6th out of 8 clubs. The lack of interest in that club was transformed 27 years later with the formation in 2018 of the Halifax Wanderers. The Wanderers compete in the Canadian Premier League. The average home attendance is about 6000. Their current squad features two players from England, Cory Bent and Lifumpa Yande Mwandwe. They dismissed their Manager after the 2022 campaign which saw them finish 7th out of 8 clubs with the lowest number of Goals For in the league. The club website is hfxwanderersfc.canpl.ca.

For several years I coached football, mainly Boys but also some Senior Women’s clubs. It was with a Women’s club that I had my three most memorable achievements, all with the same club during the same season.

Even though we lost a match by several goals, we held our opponents’ top scorer without a goal. In our final match of the season, we held the club at the top of the Table to a draw. I was most proud of our defensive accomplishment, as we allowed half of what the previous year’s version of the club allowed, just over 50 as compared to over 100.

I have a second title of ‘Ambassador’ which I want to share with you. It grew

out of the journey I am taking with my mother as she lives with Parkinson’s Disease. She was diagnosed in 2013 and her symptoms became more noticeable beginning early in 2019. My role helping to care for her became more demanding for a time before and since my father’s passing in November 2021. I discovered the Davis Phinney Foundation, based in Louisville, Colorado, USA. Davis Phinney is a former Olympic and Professional Cyclist who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at age 40. The Mission of the Foundation is “We help people with Parkinson’s live well today.” My role is to connect and support individuals and families who are dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. While I am aware of the excellent work of such organizations as Parkinson’s UK, I invite you to contact me if you would like to learn more about the Davis Phinney Foundation, or you can visit the website which is davisphinneyfoundation.org.

The Club was originally formed as Cockfosters Athletic in 1921 by local residents and the ground allocated to the Club by Lady Bevan, from her family estate.

Cockfosters Juniors merged into the club at the start of the 1930s, and they subsequently joined the Wood Green League. They won Division Two in 1931–32 and Division One in 1933–34. Season 1938/39 saw first of two “trebles” in the Club’s history, winning the Wood Green League’s Premier Division, League Cup and the Barnet Cup.

Following World War II the club joined Division One of the Northern Suburban Intermediate League, and after finishing as runners-up in 1946–47, they were promoted to the Premier Division.

Although they were relegated back to Division One a year later, they won Division One in 1949–50 to earn promotion back to the Premier Division. The following season saw them finish as Premier Division runners-up.

Cockfosters won Division One again in 1960–61 and, after being promoted, were Premier Division champions the following season.

In 1966 they joined Division One of the Hertfordshire Senior County League, and after winning it in their first season, they were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1968 “Athletic” was dropped from the club’s name.

The 1970s was one of the most successful in the Club’s history. They won the London Intermediate Cup in 1970–71, beating Clapton Reserves

2–1 in a replayed final. They won the Premier Division title in 1978–79, also winning the Herts Intermediate Cup and the league’s Aubrey Cup.

In the early 1980s Former Barnet player Jeff Voyce was appointed 1st Team Manager and the side claim their second Premier Division title.

In the 1983/84season Colin Bell took over as Manager and the 1st Team win the Premier Division for a third time. Colin decided to resign at the end of the campaign.

The 1984/85 season saw former Arsenal player Glyn MacDonald appointed as 1st Team Manager. Team win the HSCL’s Aubrey Cup and are Premier Division Runners-up. The 1989–90 season saw them win the London Intermediate Cup for a second time, beating Port of London Authority 1–0 in the final.

1990/91 saw the Club gain “Senior Status” with the 1st Team leaving for the London Spartan League Premier Division, bringing an end of 25 seasons of membership in the Herts Senior County League - all, but the first having been in the top flight - a period that saw the 1st Team as Premier Division Champions 3 times, London FA Intermediate Cup winners twice, the Herts FA Intermediate Cup winners once and finalists on 3 other occasions, HSCL Aubrey Cup winners twice and finalists twice.

The dawning of the new century saw youth football re-introduced to the Club starting with an Under 18 side and later teams at Under 13 and Under 15 age groups.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 THE HISTOR y

The Club introduced an Under 18 Youth side managed by Paul Boxer competing in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League.

With the elevation into the Spartan South Midlands League’s Premier Division in 2007/08 the Club accepted into the FA Challenge Cup for the first time in their history.

The 2013/14 season proved to be another successful one, with a very creditable 8th place & both the SSML’s Challenge Trophy and the South Midlands Floodlight (Senior) Cup won.

The Under 18s, managed by Paul Boxer and assisted by Steve Foot, won the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League’s Nemean Division and were runners-up in the League’s Divisional Winners Play-Off Final.

2013 saw the Youth Section enhanced with a get together with Whetstone Wanderers. The Wanderers’ Under 15 & Under 16 teams played under the Cockfosters FC’s name in the Eastern Junior Alliance League.

This new ‘affiliation” expected to be a great benefit to both clubs and would provide a continuity of players moving up into our Under 18’s, Reserves and hopefully the 1st Team.

The 2014/15 season’s one bright spot was the displays of our Youth Section. The U18s were Southern Counties Floodlit Youth Lge. Olympian Division winners, beating Luton Town in the SCFYL’s Divisional Winners Play-off Final.

In 2015/16 The U14’s made a clean sweep of everything, winning the EJA’s Herts (Brown) Division, the EJA U14 Divisional Play-Off Final, the EJA U14 Challenge Cup and the Middlesex FA County FA’s U14 Cup.

The 2016/17 season saw the 1st Team finish 3rd (its’ highest ever position) in the SSML Premier Div. and the Reserves as R/up in the U25 Development Division.

The end of the 2017/18 season saw the U18s Runners-up in the SCFYL’s Delphian Division. The U13s won the EJA Herts (Green) Div. and won the AFA County Youth Cup as well as runners-up in the London FA Sunday Youth Cup.

At the start of the 2018/19 campaign Ryan Wade was appointed as 1st Team manager with Nick Mountford assistant / coach, both having played at a higher level of football. The campaign was disappointing, but the last 15 minutes of the season’s final league game saw them score 3 times to win 3-2 and narrowly avoid the drop.

The youth sides continued to do well - Vas Chiotis’ U14s, winning the EJA division & reaching 2 County Youth Cup finals & Brett Cahill’s U17s also reached a County Youth Cup final.

The 2019/20 season saw the FA moved the club laterally from the Spartan South Midlands Lge’s top division to that of the Essex Senior League.

With the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons both curtailed by Covid19, last season was a season of change.

At the end of January Ryan Wade stepped down as Manager and the highly experienced Gavin Kelsey was appointed bringing in Glenn Draper as his assistant. The Under 18s continued to play in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League & Eastern Junior Alliance League giving youngsters a chance to showcase their skills before stepping up to the reserves and 1st Team.

This progression was highlighted recently when young goalkeeper Neo Donoghue made his 1st team debut at Woodford Town following in the footsteps of George Constanti who has netted over 30 times for the Under 18s this season and Andy Polycarpou who debuted for the 1st team earlier in the season.

This season saw Gavin Kelsey in charge with Glen Draper as his assistant and the team moved back to the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division. The Reserve teams continue in the Herts Senior County League with the Under 18s remaining in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League & Eastern Junior Alliance League.

34 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs COCkFOSTERS

MATCH RE p ORT

There were three changes to the starting lineup, injury to “Manny” Immanuel meant Kelvin Osei-Addo started up front & with Kyle Davison-Gordon & Benji Crilley unavailable, Ethan Creary & Dylan Baker started in their place. Seventeen-year-old Dennis Vesho earned his second place on the subs bench although he didn’t feature in the game, he has been a big part of the very impressive U18s side this season and will be a name to watch out for in the next few seasons.

For Ethan Creary this was his 50th appearance for the Club, following in the footsteps of J’Ardell Stirling who celebrated a similar achievement the previous week in the Ardley Utd match. Both players brought in by Joe Deeney have been exemplary role models for the Club’s younger players, determination, desire, discipline, and commitment being in their DNA.

Robbie Goodman wore the Captain’s armband with Alfie Osborne, still needing a protective bandage on his head, started on the bench.

A sizeable Blues support was in attendance and their loyalty was rewarded early on with Kelvin’s early goal. The assist from Danny Webb was notable and showed his all round ability to be both provider as well as poacher and sharp shooter. This was Kelvin’s 8th goal of the season and was ultimately enough to take all three points back to Creasey Park.

Four days earlier, Dunstable had started in similar vein. Scoring early on against Hoddesdon they then had much of

the possession and looked to secure their lead with a second goal. History repeated itself on Saturday with the Dunstable side enjoying most of the possession but again unable to find a second goal.

George Graham’s Arsenal sides made 1 -0 wins their trademark and enjoyed success and silverware in doing so. Dunstable were knocking on the door but to their credit, Arlesey regrouped after the early set back and managed to repel the blue shirted forays.

At the other end Connor Coulson had a relatively quiet afternoon with the closest the home side coming of getting a point being a goalmouth scramble which saw Dunstable just able to clear their lines.

John Smith was the Blues man of the Match but there were contenders all over the park as to a man each player did what was asked, kept it simple and did the job required of them.

In the 64th minute there was applause from the Blues support as goal scoring hero, Kelvin Osei-Addo was replaced by Alfie Osborne. Osborne, fearless as always, first contribution was a headed clearance. Head wound or no head wound, you just knew Alfie would do just what was required of him.

Eight minutes later, and the impressive Ruari Mills was given a breather and replaced by Joe Sellers-West.

A much stronger display by the home side in the second half meant chances for the Blues were more limited but come the final whistle few could argue with the end result.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 35 SSM f L p REMIER d I v ISION

The Dunstable Town FC Darts Team played their first competitive match last week, losing narrowly 3 -4 to Dunstable Cricket Club in an absorbing and tension filled match.

They followed it up a couple of days ago in their first home match at Creasey Park, with another narrow loss of 3 -4 against the United Services Club.

The lads have only had a couple of practice sessions so Team Captain, Arone Thasan, was especially proud of how well his Team had performed against two seasoned and experienced opposition teams.

DTFC Darts Team is the brainchild of Arone & Ian Bateman who hold a weekly practice session every Monday at Creasey Park starting at 7.30pm.

Arone & Ian are indebted to James Slack, Creasey Park Facility Manager, for his support and that of his staff.

If you’d like to join the lads on a Monday, please ring Arone on 07716 192107 or Ian on 07973 810036. We’re not looking for world champions, all levels and abilities are welcome.

The emphasis is on having some fun, meeting new people, and making friendships as well as achieving your potential at the oche.

After successful walks to Leverstock Green, Harpenden and Tring, we are planning two more this season, totalling approximately 100km.

You can join us on as many as you wish and help us raise some funds for the club, to continue our work within the local community, and for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the OLLIE Foundation.

www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/dtfc2

All walks will leave Creasey Park on a matchday and plan to arrive in time for a well-earned pint (or few)
