DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 1

Welcome to the management, players, and supporters of Leverstock Green ahead of today’s game. Our last fixture with Leverstock Green ended in a 2-2 draw which was an eventful day to say the least. We turned in an unbelievably poor 1st half where we found ourselves 1-0 down and after our dismal display were very fortunate to go in at only 1-0. A brutal half time assessment on one of the very few occasions I got personal with players saw us equalise 47 seconds into the 2nd half. We were much better 2nd half in terms of performance and were disappointed to not find the win. Full credit to Leverstock Green they are going well this season and have only 4 losses in 24 so it further highlights what a tough game today will be. Whilst we have respect for every opponent when the game starts, we always believe and back ourselves to win.

I want to start my programme notes by paying tribute to the Bateman Family. Last Saturday we were all able to share a tribute to Aaron. Players, staff,

supporters, directors and family and friends of Aaron were all able to be together in the Aaron Bateman stand at the end of the game. It was a very emotional moment for everyone and just goes to show how much Aaron was loved by everyone and the ever-lasting legacy he leaves.

Ian Bateman has been someone I have become very close with. His unbelievable strength and courage epitomise the man he is and I have so much admiration for him and he has become a hero for us all. There are no words or tributes any of us can ever make to erase the pain or do Aaron, Ian, Charlotte, or any of the Bateman family justice. All I can say is I am sure Aaron is looking down immensely proud of the legacy he has left and the strength he gives us all. The togetherness as a club we have showed has been humbling and further reiterates why I am so proud to be the Head Coach of our wonderful club.

The new sign in the Aaron Bateman stand which reads “In spite of it all, life is

beautiful” is something we must work to remember during the toughest of times. I am almost ashamed to admit that during the 94 minutes of a football match I forget that football isn’t life or death, there are always bigger things than 3 points. Mine and the players aim for the rest of the season is to keep working hard, doing the best we can and keep making everyone proud of the group that pull on the Dunstable Town badge. We are on a good run of form now, unbeaten in 6 games with 1 loss in the last 11 in the league. During that run we have kept 7 clean sheets which shows the grit and resilience we are playing with. I promised when I took the job that our team would put copious amounts of sweat into the shirt and never give up. We are giving it everything and will continue to do that for the next 16 league games. My players and my staff make immense sacrifices to represent this football club and their loyalty has been incredible. In a modern-day world of football where so many players and clubs show a complete lack of respect and move for what feels like an extra 10p a week, we have something different.

So many of my players have had opportunities to earn substantially more money elsewhere. Whenever we get an approach for one of our players, I always notify them, I never hide it from them. Some of the approaches are done properly and some unfortunately are not. I never know my players financial situations away from football, so I always tell them how loved they are but that I understand if they must earn money elsewhere. Whilst I never want to lose players, I also do understand that you cannot pay your mortgage with the currency of loyalty. It is a credit to all my lads that not one has put money before playing for me and this football club.

I don’t mean It disrespectfully to anyone else but there is nobody at his football club that wants us in that top 2 more than me. It has consumed me since I got here, and it feels like every waking moment all I think about is winning. It is an obsession without a doubt, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. Can I promise promotion? Of course, I can’t promise that and that would be churlish to ever talk like that. What I do promise is that I will leave no stone unturned in our quest to the get there. My Dad said to me as a young boy, and it always stuck with me that it is ok to fail providing you give it absolutely everything.

I have more wrinkles then when I started, my hairline is back a few more inches than when I arrived but I tell you something I have loved absolutely every moment of it. It is time to strap ourselves in, enjoy the ride, love the highs, ride the lows and let’s see where it takes us. I have no doubts there will be a few more emotional outbursts so if you stand within 20 yards of the dugout maybe think about ponchos unless you are partial to some Lucozade.

Finally, a massive well done to Peter Bottom who we all love. Peter finally completed the Harpenden Town walk on Tuesday at the 3rd attempt. He completed the 1.6 miles remaining after the postponements. Congratulations Peter, with our injury list keep the miles coming as you might be needed to get your boots on before the seasons out. Scottie returns from Mexico today as well so It will be great to have him back and listen to his booming voice, we have definitely missed you.

Enjoy today’s game.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 3

It really is a pleasure to welcome Emma Smart and colleagues to Creasey Park for this afternoon’s fixture v Leverstock Green. Emma took over as Chair of Leverstock Green following the sad and unexpected death of her father, Graham, in 2019. Graham really was one of the nicest men in football and someone who performed half a dozen different duties at the Club. Emma has followed in Graham’s footsteps and has made Leverstock Green one of the most hospitable clubs to visit on our travels.

First Team Manager, Fergus Moore & Assistant, Scott McGleish have made the Green a very hard team to beat, and their defensive record is the 4th best in the League. Expect a close and keenly contested encounter this afternoon.

We welcome not just Emma & her committee colleagues, but also Fergus, Scott, the players and supporters of

LGFC & hope they enjoy their afternoon with us and have a safe journey home come the final whistle.

Tuesday was the first anniversary of Aaron Bateman’s death. The number of bouquets, candles, and mementoes that well wishers brought to lay in the Aaron Bateman stand touched us all, as did two remarkable events at the end of the Hoddesdon match last Saturday.

Without needing to be asked or prompted, First team players laid flowers in the stand and hugged Ian, Charlotte & Steve in an emotional show of solidarity after the final whistle had blown. This was then followed by Creasey Park, Duty Manager, Hayley & her team presenting Ian & family with a plaque inscribed with the famous lyrics we all know now. “In spite of it all, life is beautiful.”

In another magnificent show of the solidarity that transcends the rivalries

“there’s everything to play for and you can play your part by getting behind the team and showing your full support both at creasey park and on our travels. ”

between towns and clubs, Leighton Town have planned a tribute to Aaron for next Tuesday when we travel to Bell Close for the semi-final of the Spartan South Midlands Premier Cup. On the field we picked up a very useful point away at Harpenden Town on Tuesday night. Matches at this time of year are not for the faint-hearted or for the purists. The objective is to win and if that means winning by a single goal with a direct style of football, then so be it. Two goals from the head of Joe SellersWest were enough to gain all three points against Hoddesdon last Saturday. Luke Dunstan’s perfectly flighted corner kicks proving too deceptive for the away defence to deal with.

We’re now in 4th position and still have the top three teams to play on their own pitches. We are 9 points behind but have two games in hand over top of the League, Stotfold, who we visit on the last day of the season. It would be nice to think that we will still be challenging for honours come the end of the season.

Joe’s prophetic words that no team would run away with the League this season look very accurate. There’s everything to play for and you can play your part by getting behind the Team and showing your full support both at Creasey Park and on our travels.

We’re almost ready to make a big announcement about the benefits of being a Club Owner. Julian & Lee have been burning the midnight oil to secure another major partnership which we’ll be letting you know about very soon.

The Club’s directors met on Monday

night to approve the partnership and also made some changes to the “T’s and C’s” which we hope will make becoming an owner of the Club a little bit easier.

The more owners we have, the more community support we can offer as part of the Improving the Lives of Others programme.

For full details on how to become an Owner of DTFC & really make a difference to somebody’s life, please go to the website and click the Membership tag;

Today we welcome Steve & Wendy, two volunteers from the East Anglian Air Ambulance Service. They will be holding a bucket collection to raise funds for the charity which does such incredibly important, life saving work, 365 days per year. Please give as generously as you can afford.

Finally, as the Club continues to grow at a pace, we have vacancies for people in many different roles at the Club. All posts are voluntary, but you’ll become part of a very friendly team. If you are interested in volunteering, please let any of the committee or stewards know on matchdays or email chair.

Enjoy the game, be the lads’ 12th Man, be loud and proud but please show respect to the referee and his assistants and to the opposition.

Leverstock Green is a suburb in Hemel Hempstead, in the county of Hertfordshire. It is located on the eastern edge of the town.

There is evidence that people lived and worked in the immediate area of Leverstock Green from the time of the Roman occupation onwards. Recent research indicates that settlement along Westwick Row may well date back even further to the Iron Age and perhaps the Bronze Age. It seems quite likely that this settlement was a “suburb” of the major Iron Age settlement at Pre Wood just outside St. Albans.

Leverstock Green was affected by the 2005 Buncefield oil depot explosion (the largest explosion in peacetime Europe), causing damage to houses and other buildings, such as broken windows, fallen chimneys and in some cases more serious structural damage, temporarily displacing a number of families.

Leverstock Green FC was formed in 1895. The first reports appeared on January 4th 1896 in the Advertiser and gave an account of a match against Hemel Hempstead Rovers.

The first competitive fixtures were reported during season 1908/1909 when the Club competed in Division Three of the West Herts League. Other clubs competing in the league at that time were: Abbots Langley, Bovingdon, Boxmoor, Bushey Heath, Hagden Lane, Kings Langley and Potten End.

The Club ground in Pancake Lane originally formed part of the Gorhambury Estate, Lord Verulam making the ground available for the youth of the area and

his estate workers to enjoy a game of ball. Clearly Lord Verulam was an early enthusiast, providing timber-built changing rooms, which have been progressively replaced since the 1960’s by the existing brick-built clubhouse and changing rooms.

On the death of the Lord, certain parcels of land, including that on which the Football Club stood, fell to the Crown in lieu of death duties and is administered on its behalf by the Commission for New Towns, who have remained the Club’s landlords since that time, despite two unsuccessful attempts by the Club to buy the freehold.

The club remained members of the West Herts League until 1954 when it broadened its horizons and successfully applied to join the Herts County League.

By the mid 1970’s the Club started to move forward with a new clubhouse, post & rail and the installation of training lights. The playing side of the club also improved and in 1979 the club won Division One of the Herts County League and were promoted to the Premier Division the highest standard the Club had achieved in 80 years.

In 1991 the Club were accepted into the South Midlands League and had two highly successful seasons in the Premier Division before being forced to drop into the Senior Division, as floodlights were then not available. In 1996 the club finished in runners-up position and the following season were the divisional champions but could not be promoted because floodlights had still not received approval from the Council.

DUNSTABLE TOWN FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 11 T he his T ory

Premier Division status was eventually regained in 2003, and the club is now the longest-standing current member of the division. The club’s highest finish in the Premier Division has been 4th, in season 2010/11, with top six finishes also being recorded in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2008/09.

Season 2010/11 also saw the club’s best run in the FA Vase, with wins over Welwyn Garden City, Enfield, Hullbridge Sports, Tunbridge Wells and Bemerton Heath Harlequins before defeat in the Fifth Round against Rye United.

Leverstock Green entered the FA Cup for the first time in 2004, and the club’s best performance has been reaching the Second Round Qualifying, which was achieved in 2014/15, where we were beaten by Staines Town, and in 2018/19 where we were beaten by Dorking Wanderers.

County honours were won in 2006/07 and 2010/11 as the Herts Charity Shield was lifted, and the club were beaten finalists in the Herts Charity Cup in 2011/12. After finishing runners-up four times over the previous 12 years, The West Herts FA St Mary’s Cup was finally lifted for the first time in 2017/18 with victory over Berkhamsted in the final at Vauxhall Road.

Between 2005 and 2015 the club ran a successful Ladies’ Team, which rose from the Beds and Herts League into the Eastern Region Womens League, reaching the Premier Division in 2013.

The under-18 side competes in the Southern Counties Floodlit Youth League. The team finished runners-up in their division in seasons 2010/11 and 2014/15, and in 2015/16 they reached the final of both the Brian Hitchings Cup and the Colwyn Cup, losing in both finals to Luton Town Cedars. Many players have made the step up from under-18 level to first team level, and those who have gone on to play much higher up the non-league pyramid include Charlie Gorman (Eastbourne Borough), Luke Warner-Eley (Royston Town and St Albans City) and Jonathan Lacey (Hemel Hempstead Town) who also represented the England non-league side in the Falklands while a Leverstock Green player.

The Pancake Lane ground has seen many improvements due to ever more stringent ground grading requirements. In 2007 the Peter Metcalfe changing rooms were built at a cost of £90,000. 2008 saw the refurbishment of the clubhouse to include new toilets and a new hospitality suite. In 2009 the

concrete walkway was completed to cover three sides of the ground and a seated stand accommodating 113 spectators was installed.

Season 2018/19 was one of turmoil and sadness, as long-serving fixture secretary Graham Smart passed away suddenly only weeks after taking on the role of interim chairman. A season which promised so much at the start ended with the club only securing Premier Division safety on the final day.

Emma Smart took over as chairman for season 2019/20, and with a new management team and a new spirit of optimism the club was on course for a safe mid-table finish before the season was brought to a premature end by Covid-19. The management team of Matt Harding and Mick Vipond continued into the 2020/21 season, which again came to a premature end. For season 2021/22, a new management team of Fergus Moore, Scott McGleish and Paul Marks has been appointed. The club has increased its commitment to youth development by joining the Eastern Junior Alliance and will be running an under-15 side this season.

Three club stalwarts have received awards from the Football Association and the Herts FA for 50 years’ service to football. The first was Jim Matthews, affectionately known as “Macca”, who passed away at the age of 90 in 2006. The second was Bill Dawes in 2014, and the third was long-serving club secretary Brian Barter in 2019. Brian stood down from his role as secretary in 2020, having twice been honoured with awards from the Spartan South Midlands League.

34 DUNSTABLE TOWN vs LEvERSTOCk GREEN

With games coming thick and fast, Head Coach, Joe Deeney has been mindful of making sure that players don’t get too tired and using the large squad at his disposal. This was possibly going through Joe’s mind when he named Tolu Ikuyinminu as a substitute. Tolu’s introduction at the start of the second half certainly got the crowd on their toes and gave the Blues some additional attacking options.

For the away side, a familiar face in the form of Joe Parmley lined up against his former team mates.

The first half was not a classic. Dunstable had the better chances and the lion’s share of possession but couldn’t find the magic ingredient to push ahead.

The closest they got was a fine piece of work from Joe Sellers-West who almost from nothing made space for himself around the outside of the box and unleashed a real thunderbolt which whistled narrowly wide of the far post.

Half time changes saw John Smith replaced by Tolu. “Smudger” as he’s affectionately known by team mates has been a revelation since his arrival from Amersham Town last month. A player in the mould of Joe Deeney’s preferred athletes, committed, hard working, tenacious and solid. His addition to the team has given that little bit of extra bite.

Deeney will often talk about the need to find extra 1%’s, behind the scenes and on the park. The addition of John Smith & Robbie Goodman has been just that. The competition for places has become intense, with several players competing for the same starting place.

Tolu’s pace caused his defenders worries. The Blues worked the ball through the channels and Danny Webb started to find the space which makes him such a threat.

The opening goal on 62 minutes came at the end of a good spell of Dunstable pressure which saw the Hoddesdon keeper make a couple of very decent saves.

Dunstan’s in swinging corner was beautifully flighted and there waiting at the back stick was Joe Sellers-West to guide the ball home from a couple of feet off the goal line.

With their noses in front Dunstable started to go through the gears and despite a spirited response from the away side Dunstable never looked in any serious trouble. However, as every football pundit will testify 1-0 is a dangerous scoreline to protect. Thankfully there were no heart in mouth moments, the players to a man did their jobs.

Skipper, Alfie Osborne, drew words of warm praise from the Match Referee for the way he conducted himself on the pitch and communicated with the referee. A contender for the Man of the Match, that accolade going to Joe Sellers-West, who had put the game to bed in the 86th minute with an almost carbon copy of his first goal.

Excitement grew around the ground as the results from around the League began to filter through. Teams at the top dropped points and the importance of the victory over hard working Hoddesdon became even more telling.

The Blues started slow and went a goal down giving the ball away cheaply. This lead to a long ball over the top and the Blues didn’t reacted quick enough, which lead to the Stopsley striker getting through one on one with Blues keeper George Lewington. The striker calmly slotted underneath George to go 1-0 up.

Both sides were cancelling each other but the Blues started to boss the midfield and soon found themselves 2-1 ahead with two free kicks from Cairon.

Half time came at the right time and Wayne Upton had the boys run in quickly so they could get things ironed out so they could start better in the second half.

The boys played some better football but the defence had to be at the races with the Stopsley centre forward, who was always dangerous but Blues defender Lewis Sharp marshalled him very well. A few long ranged shots from

Stopsley were collected with ease from George, and the game was put to bed with the Blues being awarded a penalty. Up stepped Liam McTague who blasted it past the keeper to make it 3-1.

Stopsley huffed and puffed but couldn’t break through the Blues defence. Tthe fourth goal came and killed the game off with a well-deserved goal from Naishayn Williams who never stopped running all game. The game was not quite over as Stopsley were awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge which lead to the Stopsley striker beating George from the spot.

The last five minutes were a bit tense, but the whistle finally went and the Blues completed the double over the league leaders and are now 1 point behind them with a game in hand. Next week at Creasey we see the Blues take on Ampthill Town.

After successful walks to Leverstock Green, Harpenden and Tring, we are planning two more this season, totalling approximately 100km.

You can join us on as many as you wish and help us raise some funds for the club, to continue our work within the local community, and for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the OLLIE Foundation.

www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/dtfc2

All walks will leave Creasey Park on a matchday and plan to arrive in time for a well-earned pint (or few)

traveLLinG by car

If using the A505, turn off at the McDonalds roundabout and head towards town centre. Continue down Billington Road for about a mile. At the mini roundabout take first exit, entrance to ground is about 100 yards along on the left, at the end of a low stone wall. Just before the houses.

traveLLinG by pubLic transport

Another easy one for us on public transport, unless it is midweek as the last bus is 21.25. A 35 to 40 minute bus ride on an Arriva 70 or 77 will take you to Leighton Buzzard.

recommended pub

Nothing worth visiting near the ground, so a short trip to the High Street will give you the choice of the Bald Buzzard Micropub, the Wetherspoon’s Swan Hotel and The Black Lion, all of which have a great range of decent cask ales.
