Most of you may not know that this Tour was not my idea – in fact it was Chuggs who pestered me into action. If truth be known it didn’t take me long to pick up the baton. The memories of the 2009 Lions Tour to South Africa are still very fresh in my mind and I know first-hand what a wonderful country SA is – and I know that the boys and supporters will have a truly memorable time. I recall my first conversation with Scotty when I wanted to sound him out on his thoughts of a SA Tour. His reaction was fantastic –
“No way Simon, can’t do it. We won’t get the support, it’s GCSE year and the boys need to focus on their studies. And we haven’t got enough time to organise it…” Once calmed down, and having promised him and Jo dinner at mine,he began to warm to the idea. As we pulled the cork from our fourth bottle of Rioja there was no turning back and a principle of inclusivity was established. We wanted no player to say they couldn’t afford it, so we agreed a principle that no player would pay more than £500. Our initial target was to get a squad of 22-25 players. We have ended up with two squads of 20 players! The response was amazing, with the only challenge being the raising of £46,000 to be able to deliver on our promise and giving 15 per cent to our chosen charities – Money for Milk and Oasis Childcare. In order to achieve this we needed to mobilise a team quickly to agree a fundraising programme – a huge thanks to Mike and Charlotte Phillips for leading this charge so brilliantly. While, at the time of writing, we have yet to hit our target, I am confident that we have the right team in place to achieve this monumental target. For all those touring I can promise you a fantastic time in one of the most beautiful, diverse, evolving and rugby mad countries I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I must admit I am tingling with excitement and can’t wait to see both squads run out for their first games. To those of you who have bought this programme, can I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting two smaller charities and allowing our young men an opportunity of a life time. Simon Wallis A very Proud Tour Manager
I’m very excited for every one of you about to set out on this trip of a lifetime. You will not tour in any other country in the world where rugby is lived more than South Africa. And that’s what will make this experience even better for you. And Cape Town is the cherry on the cake. You will travel to a lot of great cities in the world in your lifetimes, but few will be as picturesque as Cape Town. In all the anticipation and excitement, it’s important to remember that rugby is just another facet of your lives that will be preparing you for adulthood. Indeed, the reason rugby is such a special game is that it really does prepare you for life. I know you guys will all have done major exams before you go out to South Africa. And I hope you will have worked hard for them. Because, let me assure you, if you can show discipline and a work ethic on a rugby field, you will be able to do it out there in the real world one day. All good rugby players have these characteristics. Owen Farrell, with whom I work at Saracens, is one of the most hard-working young men I know. He is competing at the top level of rugby while also completing a degree at university. It’s also important to remember that the reason we do sport – and specifically play rugby – must always be to make memories. You won’t appreciate it now, perhaps, as very young men, but the single biggest reason I love this wonderful game is because there is no other sport that binds us together in friendships like rugby. When you embark on this journey to South Africa, the memories and friendships you make should be engraved in your heads for ever. For that to happen, though, requires an awareness before you start. An awareness and a commitment that you are going to embrace every second of your journey. Every rugby game, every practice session, every evening out, every trip to the vineyards, every time you go to the beach together, you must make a concerted effort to put the memory in some memory box. Because, once you come back and you start getting older, you will yearn for these moments. Have a wonderful tour. Embrace it, enjoy it – and remember it. Brendan Venter – Director of rugby, Saracens and Natal Sharks

Having seen and been involved in the club’s first youth overseas tour, the 2009 U15 tour to South Africa – my son George was one of the tourists – I know what hard work will have gone in to getting everyone on to the aeroplane. And that will only be the start. Everyone going on the tour will owe a huge debt of gratitude to the tour organising committee and, as club chairman, I thank them too. In my view, touring is the “icing on the cake” of anyone’s rugby career. Everyone remembers something that happened on tour for the rest to their lives. My ‘something’ is the time I roomed with JB on one of the club’s weekend tours to Bridgend: truly unforgettable! I am looking forward to hearing all the stories on the tour’s return
In my view, touring is the icing on the cake of anyone’s rugby career. Everyone remembers something that happened on tour for the rest of their lives I am particularly pleased that, for the club’s second overseas Youth tour, South Africa has again been chosen as the destination. It will give this group of players and supporters the chance to pick up where our first tour left off, and provide the chance for them to develop new links and friendships both for them personally and for our outstanding Club. As the plane in 2009 departed Heathrow, who would have thought one of the end results would have been such a well meaning International Charity, Money for Milk? I am so pleased that this touring party hasn’t forgotten the charity. What will be the end result of this up and coming tour? I am sure in playing terms the 2014 coaching team’s objectives will be to play attractive, enjoyable and hopefully winning rugby against local sides who, as well as being keen to show us their rugby skills, will open the door to their culture, way of life and Africa itself. Thanks are also due to the boys, parents and supporters for their time and effort in all the fundraising activities. All that remains is for me to wish everyone a great tour and ask that you all cherish this fantastic opportunity that our wonderful game of rugby has afforded you. Ed Peters

It has been my pleasure and an honour to have led this squad as head coach over the past five years. I have been incredibly lucky to have had such a big supportive group who have contributed immensely and generously in regard to their time, loyalty, effort and in some cases considerable parental sponsorship which has gone a very long way to fostering our strong team spirit. This group has been incredibly lucky over the years in regard to the players’ loyalty to each other, generous and supportive parents, and conscientious, committed coaches who are and always have been eager to coach rugby to a high standard and adopt a solid rugby ethos in regard to discipline, loyalty, inclusivity and high standards of behaviour both on the pitch and off it. Hopefully these positive life qualities have influenced and will continue to influence how the boys behave away from the club. The group continues to grow with constant additions from other clubs as our players’ friends see the high standards of coaching, both from volunteer dads and our resident professional and then choose to join us at Reeds Weybridge RFC. Quite a number have joined us from other clubs over the past few years and we have been able to field two full squads for the past four seasons – no mean feat. Our 1st XV plays in Surrey Division 1; our 2nd XV are currently one of the strongest sides in Surrey 5. This tour to South Africa is a very ambitious celebration of our achievements, and the numbers speak for themselves as the player profile pages will attest. The tour will provide the participants with lots of happy rugby-tour memories and hopefully will help to bond lifelong friendships. As we take our players towards colts rugby and they develop into forward-thinking young men it would be our solemn wish to retain them all. Our sport competes with a whole host of distractions and commitments, so we may lose a few on the way, but it is my fervent wish that we don’t lose too many of these fine young men. Let us hope that our players take all this positive energy forward into their adult lives and that our efforts have contributed in no small way towards their development and well being. John Scott – head coach, Reeds Weybridge RFC Under 16s

Douw is our man on the inside. Stalwart of the back row for this Reeds Weybridge squad for a number of years, he now goes to school at Grey College. He is, therefore, uniquely qualified to provide some insight… In South Africa, you’ll soon come to realise, rugby is everything – so school rugby is a really big deal. At a school first-team game, there can be more than 2000 spectators – and all the big schools’ first-team games are televised. In my school, Grey College, there are 12 rugby teams in the under 19 age group alone! The school's first team matches are always watched by the whole school – and the first team pitch has four stands. To put that in perspective, that makes it almost twice as big as Esher's ground – and Esher, remember, are in the third tier of English senior rugby…
At a school first-team game, there can be more than 2000 spectators, and in my school there are 12 rugby teams in the under 19 age group alone Because of the enormous interest, many sponsors go into school rugby. McDonald’s, Vodacom (Vodafone), Powerade, Adidas and Canterbury all sponsor Grey College, for example. You can see, then, that the culture is a bit different from the UK! Like many public schools in the UK, Grey College has many rugby traditions. Only first team players, for example, are allowed to wear white laces in their boots. Welcome to South Africa, I know you guys will never forget this country for many reasons. It has a fantastic culture, the weather is amazing, the people are very friendly, it’s the most beautiful country – and people prefer rugby to soccer. You will find it hard work against the teams you are playing, as here in South Africa rugby is life. But I know you guys will be able to pull off a win. Good luck!

Greatest rugby memory: Lots of them while coaching and managing this little bunch of hor rors Best tour memory: Three days on Guer nsey with the Royal Engineers, then thrashing the Royal Artillery at the Woolwich Arsenal 33:0. Then, of course, 10 years of managing and coaching this wonderful group of players has given me immense satisfaction, enjoyment and countless good memories.
JOHN GALLAGHER Playing position: 1974: wing forward, Washwood Heath School; finished 1996: centre (I looked a bit like Will Carling [of course you did – ed]), Rheindahlen Rhinos. Rugby and touring: 1992, working in Cyprus, I met up with a girl who was on a netball tour; had a kiss and cuddle. A few months later, back in the UK, the same girl with her friend, followed me into a rugby club bar (I looked a bit like Patrick Swayze [of course you did – ed]). That same friend, 22 years later is allowing her son to go on tour to South Africa with me. Other sports: BASI sports diver; volleyball referee; freefall parachute; rowing; ski instructor; paragliding pilot
MIKE PHILLIPS Playing position: Open-side flanker/ hooker Clubs: St Ambrose College, Nottingham Uni (2XV), O Paulines Other sports: Running, cycling and “Fat Dad’s Football” Greatest rugby memory: Beating Loughborough 10-11 with a last minute ‘up-and-under penalty’ from the 22 and a 15-man chase for a try! Sadly this was followed by an eight-month lay off with 14 stitches and ruptured knee ligaments in a postmatch bar incident with our tight-head prop (a mate!) and a flight of metal fire escape stairs. He walked away with only four stitches, but he bought me a kebab on the way to the hospital. Best tour memory: Tour memories!?! A contradiction in terms!
BRIAN HOLLAND Playing position 5 or 8 Clubs: Orleans Park School, Richmond RFC, Staines RFC, Twickenham RFC. Middlesex RFC. Other sports played: Not bad at Darts !!! Greatest rugby memory: England Winning the Rugby World Cup. Best tour memory: Not really a memory but more of a story: our accommodation turned out to be a tent pitched in a field on the other side of the rugby club’s club house. We were six to a tent and after a very good night in the club house we all turned in, only to find a cow had moved in to the tent and taken up residency! That’s all you need at 4am…
SIMON WALLIS Playing position: Started as a full back, moved to front row at 13, flanker at 18 and ended up as a “polyfilla” from 40-44!!!! Clubs: Feltonfleet; Epsom College; Vandals; the Mighty Reeds!! Other sports played: Hockey, skiing, squash, tennis, golf Greatest rugby memory: Watching Feltonfleet’s 1st XV, led by Douw and Chuggs, beat Aldro to achieve the school’s first 100% season in 10 years. Both teams were unbeaten and the winning conversion went over with one minute left. Amazing. Best tour memory: Leading a team of old farts dressed in green mankinis onto the pitch at Ipswich RFC. The sound – a mix of cheers, jaws dropping, screaming, pints hitting the floor – as the 600+ crowd saw what we were wearing was truly memorable.

Oasis provides a lifeline for children caught up in the maelstrom of abusive family environments. It operates across the sociodemographic range, in situations where families, for various reasons, have ended up in a circle of abuse. The consequences of this abuse for the children are very low levels of self-esteem and personal worth. Our goal is to move these family units and children from a destructive cycle of physical and psychological abuse, self-harm, truancy, criminality and drug addiction, to a life where positive choices can be made. Choices that will lead to a strong sense of self-belief and belonging. And, with that, to never-imagined successes in secondary and tertiary education, and a life that offers safety and belonging, not fear and despair. Targeting all ages from 0 to 18 years, Oasis preventative services combine to bring stability and hope to our clients. We aim to bring a range of services and interventions based on a preventative care – where possible, to intervene and address the needs of our clients before their situation becomes irretrievable to the point where statutory body resources are called upon. Despite being acknowledged as an essential care provider, Oasis Childcare is largely self-funded. There is a strong local community link between Oasis Childcare and Reeds Weybridge RFC: Adrian Ricks, an Old Reedonian, was one of the founders of Reeds Weybridge Minis RFC, and also helped to found Oasis in 1996. Money for Milk is delighted to be associated with Reeds Weybridge and the forthcoming U16s’ tour this summer. We wish everyone good luck for a successful and enjoyable tour. Money for Milk deeply appreciates being chosen as one of the tour charities. This year’s tour follows in the footsteps of the 2009 Reeds Weybridge U15 tour, which first visited Baphumelele Children’s Home, in the township of Khayelitsha. Today, Baphumelele cares for 106 abandoned, abused, neglected and orphaned children from babies to the age of 18, many infected with HIV. It costs around £360 per month to pay for formula and powdered milk and therefore a donation of £3000 will cover eight months of the home’s milk bill. Due to our direct involvement since 2009, they have been able to improve the children's nutrition by increasing the amount of milk they drink. Young babies under two receive all the formula milk they need, and now children over two are able to have two glasses of milk or one glass of milk and a yogurt per day. moneyformilk.co.uk baphumelele.org.za
left: There was no clubhouse in the early ’30s just a barn to change in and zinc bathtubs with cold water
In the beginning The Club was officially born on the 13th June 1931. Initially, there was no clubhouse, conditions were sparse, a barn full of hay was the changing room, zinc baths (filled infrequently) removed the mud. In l933, a seven-year lease was acquired on a plot of land in Northolt. Money was extracted, donated and earned, hours of work were put in by players and supporters and the result was a ground and pavilion that was in use by the start of the 1933/4 season. By l938, three teams were being fielded each week and the future looked promising. However, that summer, the pavilion was burned down and with the outbreak of war; all rugby matters were temporarily shelved. After the War In 1946, the school moved to Cobham and the club was reformed. The school kindly gave us a pitch and space for a clubhouse in the school grounds. Clubhouse number two was opened in 1952. On the move again However, by the late 1960s, the School was expanding and needed the land that the Old Boys
were using. In 1971, we were on the move again and, under the guidance of John Rogers and John Laidman, the players and members set about the construction of Clubhouse number three at Whiteley Village. The new building was opened in 1972 and celebrated by a match between the Club and Surrey County Clubs. In 1979/80, Bob Potter captained the 1st XV to an unbeaten season. On Tour In 1981, to commemorate the Club’s 50th Anniversary, some 45 members embarked on a memorable tour to Texas and Louisiana. In 1988, the Old Reedonians ventured off on their travels again, this time to Canada – and in 1990-91, the club’s 60th anniversary season, they toured the Southern States of America. Change of name Towards the end of the ’90s, the fortunes of the senior club, on the field at least, had been disappointing. In common with many other local clubs we found that other Saturday afternoon activities found preference and that in turn meant the club was fielding fewer sides. In 2002 the club decided that in order to widen its appeal locally
it would need to change the name. The obvious choice was an association with the local town, so we are now known as Reeds Weybridge RFC. While the senior club struggled, though, a thriving Mini and Youth section has developed. Established in the 1990s by three Old Reedonians looking for a place for their children to learn rugby, the Mini section grew enormously. Every Sunday from September to April we coach some 400 boys & girls from U5s through to the U12s. The club’s mission is to introduce the children into the sport and to teach them the importance of fair play, team work, confidence and respect – all important life skills.

In the 2014-15 season, we will also have Youth teams from U13 through to U18, and an U21 development side – quite an achievement from humble beginnings!

Quite a few of this Reeds Weybridge squad have been playing together for a decade - but many more new friends and team mates have joined along the way. In those 10 years, we’ve experienced highs and lows in equal measure - from the high of winning the Surrey championship to the agony of missing out on promotion on the last game of the season. Most important of all, though, this is a squad that supports its members - players, coaches and parents alike. That spirit has been exemplified by us all working together for this tour. Without it, we could never have hoped to raise such a staggering amount of money both for charity and to make this tour happen. Below The boys have wowed the crowd and strutted their stuff at the Stoop
Thank you.
