Richmond Boys Fastball provides a safe, fun, and enjoyable opportunity for children to experience team sports in both competitive and noncompetitive levels. Our coaches are well trained and encourage enjoyment, participation, and fair play. The season runs from March to June, and games are played at Merrell (formerly Palmer) fields—centrally located at Blundell and Garden City in Richmond. You are never too old to join up and learn the sport of fastball.

Physicalliteracy fundamental skills for an active life

What is physical literacy?

Why is it important?

Physical literacy is the development of fundamental movement skills for an active life.

A variety of acquired movement skills lead to an increase in conďŹ dence, participation, enjoyment and opportunities to connect and socialize. This is the foundation for an active life.

We’re currently promoting 25 fundamental movement skills which children can learn, develop and practice at City of Richmond facilities. The movement skills are: 9 Balancing

9 Hopping

9 Climbing

9 Skipping

9 Running

9 Landing

9 Jumping for distance

9 Rotating

9 Jumping for height

9 Trapping with feet/body

9 Swimming 9 Skating

9 Trapping with an implement

9 Throwing

9 Dribbling

9 Dodging

9 Kicking

9 Catching

9 Striking with an implement 9 Sliding 9 Striking with hand 9 Rhythmic moving 9 Walking 9 Tumbling 9 Cycling

Who is it for? Everyone beneďŹ ts from physical literacy! The City of Richmond is targeting 2–12 year olds because these years are ideal for children to develop fundamental movement skills.

Today’s challenges • • • •

Children have less time for active play Children spend less time outdoors Children have less freedom Children are immersed in technology

“Every individual in Richmond, regardless of age, will be physically literate and have the fundamental movement and sport performance skills to enjoy sport and physical activity to the best of their ability. –From the Richmond Sport for Life Strategy

Children are less active and as a result, childhood obesity and chronic health problems are on the rise. That’s why the concept of physical literacy was developed by Sport Canada and Canadian Sport Centres.

Programs Available The City of Richmond offers four physical literacy programs at various community centre facilities: • Active Start (Parent and Tot): 2–3 year olds • Active Start (Preschoolers): 4–5 year olds • Fundamentals of Movement: 6–9 year olds • Learn to Train: 10–12 year olds Plus, many of our programs already include the development of fundamental movement skills: swimming, dancing, skating and many more.
