Pageant’s ugly side

Counting on art

Kamilah Sturton (pictured, centre) came back from the Miss Universe Canada pageant with a few stories to tell, not least her final 12 berth.

A former bank manager turned artist, who now calls Richmond her home, draws her inspiration and strength from the colourful streets of her native Colombia.

Volunteers share farm time for Day of Caring The 2nd Annual Day of Caring at The Sharing Farm takes place tomorrow (Saturday). More than 100 volunteers from a dozen Richmond businesses turned out last year for the event, which recognizes employer-supported volunteerism and its impact on the community. They spent a morning in the fields digging, weeding and planting for a cause. “Employer-supported volunteerism is on the rise, and for good reason,” said Elizabeth Specht, executive director of Volunteer Richmond Information Services. “For businesses, the benefits are clear: increased employee morale and productivity, a greater sense of loyalty to the company. All of this contributes to a business’s profitability.” Launched near the end of 2011, the Richmond Caring Companies program comprises a series of workshops and consultations designed to teach businesses, large and small, how to enhance their community involvement. This could mean anything from establishing an employer-supported volunteer program to forming an ongoing partnership with a non-profit organization. Ultimately, businesses learn that the best way to engage their employees is to have them engage with the community. That idea is central to the Day of Caring.

Beauty queen hopeful makes top 12 Local tells of trash-talk, wrong queen crowned BY ALAN CAMPBELL

acampbell@richmond-news.com

She went there expecting to experience a “bit of drama,” but it wasn’t until the show was almost over that the theatrics took centre stage. Kamilah Sturton managed to bag B.C.’s only spot among the top 12 finalists out of 60 contestants in the Miss Universe Canada pageant in Toronto last week, despite this being the Terra Nova resident’s first foray into the world of beauty pageants. MacNeill secondary grad Sturton, 21 — a professional ballet dancer who only entered the competition late after injuring herself while preparing to go on tour — lapped up an “absolutely wonderful” whirlwind week of media appearances and rehearsals while preparing for the competition. Her surprise at making it into the top dozen vying for the “Beauties of Canada” title, however, was matched only by the foul-mouthed tirade spat from the mouths of contestants who missed out on a coveted final spot. “I went there prepared to experience a bit of drama, but after the second day, it didn’t look like there was going to be anything at all,” said Sturton. “But when the final line-up was given, the language from the mouths of very pretty girls was shocking. “They were trash-talking everyone that made it into the top 20. That was the first time some girls’ true colours started to show.” There was more drama to come, and

it wasn’t for the faint of pageant heart. Two days after Denise Garrido, of Bradford, Ont., had been crowned Miss Universe Canada 2013, the organizers realized there had been an error in the voting system. They had crowned the wrong person. The real winner was, in fact, Riza Santos, a 26-year-old Calgarian engineering student. Garrido was fourth. “It was all so very sad and I felt so, so bad for the first winner, Denise,” said Sturton. “But, she handled it all with incredible dignity.” Up until the last day’s drama, Sturton had just been glad to get back on stage. “It’s such an adrenalin rush to be up there and once you get that taste, it’s hard to forget it,” she said. “You have to put on a character, really. Each time you come out in a different costume, a different walk is needed, for example. That was easy for me with my dance background. “But after walking off the stage when they announced the final 12, I started crying. For the first time in a while, I was actually proud of myself.” Sturton will now get back to her day-to-day job of coaching off-ice figure staking and teaching at a few studios in the Lower Mainland. She said it’s unlikely she’ll return to professional ballet dancing and will set her sights on getting something that will perhaps lead her to Broadway. She’s certain, however, she won’t be entering another pageant. “This was a life goal for me, it’s not something I’m interested in pursuing.”

Brodie rode Canada Line, but defends hotel stays BY KENT SPENCER The Province

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said he chose to use the Canada Line to commute back and forth to a recent municipal convention in downtown Vancouver. However, he says how far away and how busy politicians are can change the equation. Brodie was responding to criti-

cism of five Coquitlam politicians who were being chastised by a fellow councillor for staying at Vancouver hotels during the conference. Coquitlam Coun. Lou Sekora has blown the whistle on his colleagues’ $225-per-night accommodations while they attended a municipal conference. “There’s no two ways about it. Taxpayers are treated as a bottom-

less well. Councillors and mayors have got to come down to Earth,” he said. Brodie argued that staying in Vancouver is sometimes justified. “I was on the convention committee four years ago, and I was working from early in the morning to late at night, so I stayed downtown,” said Brodie. “You look at Surrey -— someone might live right by the border, and that’s a

long way back and forth each day.” Brodie said one Richmond councillor chose to stay in a Vancouver hotel, but picked up the hotel tab herself. Some 2,000 municipal politicians from across Canada attended the four-day Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference to discuss civic business on the weekend. see Sekora page 4

Water fine could hit $1,000 Walk to Fight Arthritis Sunday, June 9, 2013

Metro Vancouver water reservoirs are near capacity but that doesn’t mean anyone in the region can ignore lawn sprinkling restrictions that went into effect June 1. In fact, Richmond has the harshest fines in the region escalating from $100 to $1,000 along with the four different stages of Metro drought. With a summer that’s expected to be hotter and drier than normal, it’s even more important to follow the rules that restrict sprinkling to mornings only from 4 a.m. to

9 a.m. Even-numbered residential addresses can open the taps Monday, Wednesday or Saturday while odd-numbered addresses can water Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. Metro leaves enforcement to the individual municipalities. Vancouver issued 750 such warnings last year and issued four $100 fines. Surrey has a $200 fine, while Maple Ridge charges just $75 for water wasters. — The Province

Stewart said he anticipated criticism, but said “enormous benefits” were reaped by being close by. “Staying downtown wasn’t a hundred-fold better, it was a thousand-fold better,” he said. “I would much rather have slept at home, but $100 million in senior government funding wouldn’t have come our way (in past years) if we hadn’t been able to build these relationships. It’s not a social conference, it’s a working conference. “You end up attending sporadically if you’re not staying downtown. Days ended at midnight and began again at 7 a.m.” Hodge said the full value of the $770 conference fee was only realized by being present all the time. “Councillors driving back and forth were picking and choosing. We’re paying for the functions. They were all wrapped up in the price of a ticket,” he said.

This was an open ticket to blow as much money as they wanted to,” he said. “Complaints go in one ear and out the other. Sharing a cab or carpooling would have been very simple. I could have taken three people.” Coquitlam politicians staying overnight included councillors Mae Reid, Terry O’Neill, Neal Nicholson and Craig Hodge; and Mayor Richard Stewart.

News MLAs can rest easy, Clark looks East John Yap, Linda Reid and Teresa Wat can switch their cell phones back on — Premier Christy Clark is going to Kelowna. One of the three Richmond MLA seats had been touted as a possible throne for Clark to sit on after she lost her own Vancouver Point Grey spot to the NDP’s David Eby. The Richmond trio can look for-

ward to four years in the Legislature after cabinet minister Ben Stewart offered his Westside-Kelowna seat. Clark will now contest a byelection in the BC Liberal stronghold, which attracted more than 58 per cent of the vote. “I want to ensure the premier gets a chance to deliver on not just a vision, but on some of the real things that

we need to do for British Columbia,” said Stewart at a news conference Wednesday, where he at times fought back tears. Clark did not say exactly when she will call the byelection, but indicated it will be within the next week, meaning the vote will take place in earlyto-mid July. — File from the Vancouver Sun

Richmond crossing unlikely to replace Pattullo

TransLink is pitching everything from a pedestrian-and-bike-only bridge to a tunnel, a Surrey-Coquitlam crossing, or even a RichmondBurnaby one to replace the aging Pattullo Bridge over the Fraser River — and, chances are, any crossing will be tolled. A four-lane bridge at Tree Island linking Richmond and Burnaby is still

one of the options, but is an unlikely option since there is no support from either Richmond or Burnaby. Whatever option is chosen, the public will pay the price. The Pattullo Bridge review, which went out for public consultation this week, and includes several options for replacing the 76-year-old bridge that connects Surrey and New

Senate audit little, late

T

he Canadian Senate is to consider a plan to do a complete, top-to-bottom audit of its expenses, including the spending of each of its individual senators. It could be that this is a good thing. From all the evidence so far it seems that senators like Mike Duffy have treated the Red Chamber less like a place of learned discourse and more like Scrooge McDuck’s money vault. Duffy has been backstroking through cash and perks since being appointed, and we eagerly await more thorough audits of his fellow ex-journalist Pamela Wallin, along with a few other less famous senators. On the other hand, perhaps an audit isn’t worth the cost. Maybe we could just save money by replacing the senate with bags of sand, propped up in the comfy armchairs of the chamber. They would, in many ways, resemble the average senator. They would take up space, they would weigh about the same, and they’d have as much relevance to the average Canadian. In theory, the Canadian senate holds an interesting place in our democracy, as a chamber in which lifetime appointments allow its members the security of not having to worry about public opinion. In practice, the senate still holds an interesting place in our democracy. First, it’s not in the least democratic. Second, it has produced not very much sober second thought over the years, but has proved to be an excellent producer of scandal, patronage, and headlines about worthless old political hacks taking vacations in Mexico or Florida on the taxpayer’s dime. The senate only needs an audit if we intend to keep it around in its present form. If we can all agree that it needs massive reform, or simply to be disbanded, let’s skip a step, save some money, and just get on with the job.

CHOICE WORDS

City spending running amok The Editor, Re: “City spokesman says Big City Spenders report is a “fail,” News, May 31. If anything is a “fail” it’s Richmond City Hall’s Ted Townsend’s response to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses report on municipality spending. Mr. Townsend’s use of such phrases as “They only look at one side of the balance sheet,” “It’s a simplistic analysis,” and “Many services are driven by demand,” are quite distracting. Could such phrases by Mr. Townsend be “a knee-jerk response” to criticism of municipal overspending. To use YVR wanting more police as an example of customer demand requires more explanation. Why not just tell YVR to raise their beloved improvement fees to pay for more police? What happened to airport security being a federal responsibility? Stating that Richmond has kept property taxes at the rate of inflation, while putting in place user fees and hiking them at every opportunity, is reminiscent of the ploys used by olden-day snake oil salesman. Schemes for new bylaws that have excessive fines attached are proof to some that city staff are running amok trying to find ways to get into your wallets. Sooner or later cities that continue their spendthrift ways are going to have a reckoning. Better it be sooner than later. D. Edward Robinson Richmond

Port expansion will inflate food crisis Signs of a changing climate are everywhere. Ocean warming is melting the ice pack, causing rising sea levels and the tornadoes that killed 24 people last week. B.C. forests have been eaten up by bugs once killed off in cold winters. Longer, drier summers extend the forest fire season. We established the BC Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) in 1973 to avoid a future food crisis. That crisis has arrived. Drought in Texas and the southwest is causing rising beef prices as ranchers sell off their starving cattle. The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions warns that California is running out of water for irrigation, with only 20 per cent of its normal supply in the key food producing San Joaquin Valley. Their report indicates that B.C.’s temperature will increase by 1.8 degrees, with six to seven per cent more rain in the winter and more frequent summer droughts in the B.C. Interior. Here at the coast, our population is growing, from 2.5 million today to 3.5 million by 2040. Only five per cent of B.C. is arable and only one per cent is prime farmland. In 1973, B.C. produced 86 per cent of its small fruit and vegetables, mostly in the Lower Mainland. Today we produce 43 per cent; exactly half. The Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island has the best land and most moderate climate in

Coun. Harold Steves CITY SCENE

Canada. The BC Ministry of Agriculture estimates we will have to add 240,000 acres of irrigated farmland here and a million acres of un-irrigated land elsewhere in the province to feed our growing population. Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) sees if differently. According to a report prepared for PMV by Avison Young on May 22, “We are rapidly approaching a crossroads that will determine whether the promise of jobs and growth ... will be realized.” A 1968 study called “Our Southwestern Shores” targeted the rich Delta and Richmond farmlands for port expansion. In spite of the ALR, the port has been methodically moving out of Vancouver Harbour into the Fraser River Estuary ever since. According to Avison Young, there is only 28,614,721 sq. ft. of industrial building inventory left in Vancouver and North Vancouver. There is 56,803,052 sq. ft. of inventory in Delta and Richmond, but the Port wants more. “The (ALR) remains a potential source of new industrial lands” the report states, calling for “an equitable solution” and a “new amended approach to industrial land use policy in (B.C.)” That means the

industrialization of the Fraser River that we were trying to prevent. Now Port Moody wants to re-develop another 1,000 acres of Burrard Inlet industrial land that was once home to IOCO. The Port has shown no interest in keeping it industrial. Last week, Richmond council opposed such a change, and asked staff to prepare a report on the ripple effect on Richmond and Delta farmland. The Port is also promoting the export of low quality “dirty” burning coal from the U.S. through Fraser Surrey Docks. Coal dust escaping along the way through White Rock and blown from barges to pollute the Fraser River Estuary is the price of progress. Cities in Washington and Oregon have refused to export the coal because of its major effect on increasing global warming. Increasing global warming increases the need to save the farmland the port is intent on destroying. On June 14, the Metro Vancouver Board will be hearing delegations on an Environment Committee recommendation to “oppose coal shipments from the Fraser River Estuary other than the existing Roberts Bank Superport.” At the same time we are expected to accept the risk of oil spills from Panamex supertankers carrying jet fuel through the estuary. In the war against climate change, PMV is clearly on the other side.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

We’d love single-family life

The Editor, Re: “Young people not sold on home ownership,” News, May 27. This article did not sit well with me, nor did it with my peers. As a young adult in my 20s, I completely disagree with the message being sent out that single-family homes are not important to young people. Having been born and raised in Richmond in a detached home with a yard, I would want nothing less than that for me and in the future, my children. Many of my peers want the same, the problem being that the cost is out of range for what was a staple in our parent’s generation. Instead of buying an undersized condo here, many young people I know plan on leaving the city, and more often than not, leave the province or country to afford a larger living space often at a lower price. Housing costs are the reason for more young people renting, not their desire for living flexibility. As optimistic as projects such as the River Park Place complex are in

21 Years

creating a community feel, I fear from my own experience as a Richmond condo owner that it is a hollow pursuit having the opposite effect: It creates more isolation and suspicion from your neighbours, many of whom refuse to even say “hi” back when greeted. If more of these projects continue, you may as well say “so long” to the good old days of Canadian values where you would greet your neighbours and chat while doing yard work or walking down the street in communities of detached homes. Instead, we are stacked up on top of each other in concrete blocks like insects in a nest. So, before we assume that all young people buy condos and forego driving by choice, let’s not kid ourselves and remember that, given the choice, any number of young people would gladly have more living space and a car in an instant. It’s insulting to us millennials that the baby boomer generation believes that we’re happily accepting these changes. Robert Johnson Richmond

Run away to circus school first NCS teaches biology, contract negotiation as well as acrobatics BY PHILIP RAPHAEL

praphael@richmond-news.com

JOHN CORREA/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Angela practices a hoop routine at the Vancouver Circus School in New Westminster.

Cirque du Soleil: Shines bright in aerialist’s future Continued from page 10 “When she was little, she always wanted to put on improvised dance and acrobatic shows in the living room and on the old swing and trapeze set in the backyard,” Wagar says. “She loved unicycling in the Steveston Salmon Festival parade and performing in year-end shows at preschool, public school, music school, dance school, gymnastics club, community events, and most of all circus school.” Today, that urge to take centre stage takes Angela to some lofty heights above the training centre floor at VCS where she moves smoothly through her routines with the aerial hoop and lengths of blue silk dangling from the ceiling. “I am mainly interested in aerials because you get to be up in the air and there’s another object to interact with, and that adds a wow effect for the audience,” she says. “Plus, it’s fun for me to be up in the air spinning, climbing and all sorts of things.” It’s a vocation that requires “How in the name intensive training sessions in of Newton’s Laws the circus school three days a week. But it’s a schedule of Motion does — balanced with school work — that Angela is willing to she do that?” undertake if it takes her into — Valerie Wagar the professional world of a circus performer. “This is where I want to be,” she says. Backing her all the way is her mom who from early in her daughter’s switch to more focused circus school training saw this was her direction in life. “I could see she had the talent, work ethic, and intrinsic drive needed to become a circus aerialist. As a result we were fairly confident this was her career path and were willing to sacrifice time and money for her training,” Wagar says. Now, as Angela prepares for circus school in Montreal she is thinking about what opportunities may lie ahead. “I want to be in Cirque du Soleil, or another touring company,” she says, although she has only seen a couple of Cirque du Soleil’s live performances. Already amazed by her daughter’s abilities, Wagar, who when asked what she thinks when viewing her daughter’s performance, said “I’m simply in awe. How in the name of Newton’s Laws of Motion does she do that?”

Are the days of simply running away to join the circus and becoming a success over? Listening to Howard Richard, director of creation for the world renowned National Circus School (NCS) in Montreal, the answer is “not quite.” “Of course, they can run away to the circus — once they have finished with us,” he quipped, adding schools such as the NCS have emerged in the past few decades to meet the demand for talent that is more well-rounded than those from previous generations of circus performers. “Many of the circus companies are in that place where it’s not merely the idea of a performer doing their number (act) for five minutes,” Richard said. “With a show that can be an hour or more in duration, it’s the idea of what else are you able to give.” That’s the edge schools like NCS try to instil in their students. Richard explained that much of the talent under the big top in years past came from circus families who handed over the reins of the show to offspring. Plus, other emerging talents were discovered as street performers. Some of that still happens today, but increasingly talent is gravitating to the more formal training route. And the NCS, with a student enrolment of around 150, attracts students from across the globe, such as Richmond’s Angela McIlroy Wagar who will be completing her Grade 12 year there starting in August. “They (student performers) can come from a gymnastics or dancing background, and these are very much movement oriented disciplines. And this (NCS) is one way of getting that training,” Richard said. But it’s not just all circus-specific schooling at the NCS, which

Five of the seven founding members of The 7 Fingers company are NCS grads. And 20 other former NCS students are performing in three of their shows. “Some of our students who have not even graduated already have their year lined up for 2014,” Richard said. “Some have already been accepted into companies in Europe and Canada. The placement rate is extremely high at this time.” But to make it in the highly specialized and competitive world of a circus performing, it takes that something extra. Car tires make an impact

Interest

BY DAVID CHAO

Limited Offer*

Special to the News

Most people don’t think too much about their car’s tires — all they know is

13800 Smallwood Place, Richmond Auto Mall

604.278.3185

that they’re round, hold air, and essentially keep the car on the ground. In fact, most people don’t even care about them, until it’s time to replace the tires.

2013

As a result, people end up just searching for the “best” deal, often getting the cheapest tires possible. If one would stop and think about their tires a little longer, they would realize that they are the only contact their vehicle has with the road. Therefore, stopping distance, cornering ability, ride comfort and fuel efficiency are all affected by the tire choice. The most sophisticated braking and steering systems could be rendered useless by inferior tires. But by the same token, a good set of tires can considerably improve every aspect of even the most “basic” automobile. As with any purchasing decision, knowledge is power. The first step is determining what size of tire you need. Tire sizes are complicated with an infinite

combination of size, diameter, compound type and character. Let’s look at two examples: P225/60R16 97T and LT265/70R17 121R ! The prefix, a P or LT, simply indicates that the tire is designed for either passenger car or light truck application. Some SUVs and smaller trucks are fitted with P rated tires for improved ride comfort, but if you are routinely carrying heavier loads, an LT rated tire would suit your needs better. ! The next group of digits, 225 and 265 in our examples, tells you how wide the cross-section of the tire is in millimeters. But keep in mind; this measurement is from the widest point to widest point and not just the surface of the tread. ! The following number is the aspect ratio. This tells you the height of the sidewall see Tires page 19

DriveTime Tires: Pricey, but rare purchase Continued from page 16 as a percentage of the tire’s width. So, the sidewall of our passenger tire is 60 per cent of 225 mm, or 135 mm. ! The R lets you know that it is a radial tire as opposed to a bias-ply tire, which would be designated by a D. ! The rim size in inches is noted next. In our examples, the car has 16inch wheels and the truck has 17. ! Next is the load-carrying capacity. It is highly recommended that you

never select a tire with a lower load rating than the manufacturers specifications. ! The last item is the tire’s speed rating. This reflects the tire’s ability to dissipate heat. Driving at high speeds for extended periods of time, like on long highway commutes, creates heat buildup within the tire. You need to ask yourself: Would you prefer a harder, performance-oriented tire or a softer, comfortable one? How do you rate the importance of fuel

A great Father’s Day gift!

economy, tread wear and noise reduction? It’s also wise to consider the area you live in. An all-season tire will offer a moderate level of traction, but is a compromise to the capabilities of snow tires. The most common upgrading practice is plus sizing — increasing the wheel size while lowering the aspect ratio of the tire. The last point to consider is price. You will likely only need to purchase a new set of tires once or twice over a car’s lifespan.

Father-son reunion not so good

It is uncommon for a father, albeit estranged, to oppose an application by his son for Committeeship. However, in the case called Re Korol (reasons released earlier this week), it happened. The parents, who had four children, separated in 1993. The father left British Columbia. He apparently provided support payments until 2002, at which point one of the sons (the Petitioner) started helping the wife with her financial affairs. The mother gave Power of Attorney to the Petitioner in 2008. She appeared to have become ill around 2011. Two of the Petitioner’s siblings supported his application to be Committee, the third (who lived in the U.S.) choosing not to participate in the action. The estranged father sought an Order appointing the Public Guardian & Trustee as Committee, as he apparently did not trust his (Petitioner) son. The Court felt that the Petitioner would be the most appropriate person to appoint as Committee. The Petitioner had helped his mother with her financial affairs since 2002, and the Public Guardian & Trustee did not oppose the Petitioner's appointment either. The best interests of the patient guided the Court in its decision-making here. It was clear that the Petitioner was the best person to be Committee.

Pang in Montreal for national team camp

Richmond’s Riley Pang is among seven B.C. players invited to Montreal this week for a national men’s U15 soccer evaluation camp. The three-day camp is primarily being used to evaluate 30 players from Canada’s four professional academies. Players from U15 provincial teams will have an opportunity to perform in front of Canadian coaches at the 2013 Canadian Soccer Association All-Stars Showcase in July. Pang, a Grade 9 student at Steveston-London secondary, is in his first season with the Whitecaps FC Residency Program. The central defender grew up in the Richmond Youth Soccer Association before playing for Fusion FC of the B.C. Premier Soccer League. He was recruited by the Whitecaps last summer. Canada’s increased activity at the U15 level is part of Technical Director Tony Fonseca’s vision for the international development of young Canadian players that centers around increased contact with the national team program at a young age. “The move towards increased national team opportunities for

McMath Wildcats battled Victoria’s Oak Bay Bays to a scoreless draw en route to a 13th place finish at the B.C. “AAA” Girls Soccer Championships in North Vancouver. The Wildcats had an unfortunate run in round-robin play by also playing Terry Fox to a scoreless draw and falling 1-0 to Clayton Heights. The results left the Richmond champions in fourth place. The girls rebounded with a pair of wins, including a 3-0 triumph over Burnaby South in their final game.

our U15 men’s players began last year and this is something that you can expect to see continue,” said Fonseca from camp in Montréal, “This particular camp is an opportunity for us to identify prospective national team players from the MLS and NASL academies.” The schedule for the U15s will not be limited to domestic camps however, as following the evaluation opportunities, Canada will assemble a team to take part in a CONCACAF U15 tournament in Mexico City Aug. 6-18; as well as the AGS Cup in Alicante, Spain in September. “This type of increased international experience for our youngest players represents a big step forward for us,” said Fonseca. “It is proven that the world’s best international sides are identifying players at younger ages than ever before and we are pleased to have a program that will allow us to incorporate our young players into the Canada set-up during the early stages of their careers. “Our goal is for our core national team players to have 50 international caps under their belts by the time the time they are 19-years-old.”
