Foul stink eaten up by digestion system Anaerobic technology was a year behind schedule: Harvest CEO BY ALAN CAMPBELL

acampbell@richmond-news.com

PHOTOS SUBMITTED

Harvest Power’s ‘energy garden’ now contains all the smells that cause a fuss last summer.

Remember those foul fermenting stenches that wafted across Richmond last summer, depending on which way the wind was blowing? Thankfully, that won’t happen again — at least not from the same source as last year, Harvest Power’s relatively new composting facility in East Richmond, near No. 7 and Blundell roads. Harvest Power have sorted it out and admitted to city council on Wednesday that the technology needed to contain the stink — an anaerobic digester, called an “energy garden” —

came online a year later than planned. “That part of the facility was supposed to be ready last summer,” said Harvest Power’s CEO, Paul Sellew. “We thought we had it all figured out (last year), but we were a little late in getting it going and we overburdened the composting system.” Since the digester finally kicked in around the end of last year, there have been no odour complaints to the city or Metro Vancouver, the latter of which deals with air quality in the region and had fielded scores of residents’ concerns last summer. “The odours are now contained and destroyed in the digester,” added Sewell.

Richmond last summer paid the price for the success of the entire Lower Mainland’s food waste recycling programs, which were pouring into Harvest Power’s facility in the east of the city. Metro Vancouver had to step in to force the company to take temporary measures to deal with the stench. In a bid to engage the community, locally and beyond, Harvest Power have opened a new visitor’s centre, which shows off how the collection and digestion of the waste works. The facility is also at the forefront of green energy, producing electricity from biogas and transportation fuel from biomethane.

Pot ads given green light on Canada Line

Billboard firm overturns initial rejection of Sensible BC’s decriminalization campaign BY PHILIP RAPHAEL

praphael@richmond-news.com

A group trying to de-criminalize marijuana use in B.C. has been given the green light to grow some grassroots support on outdoor signage along the Canada Line. Sensible BC’s director Dana Larsen told the Richmond News his organization’s initial efforts last month to get their billboards at Canada Line stations was turned down by Pattison Outdoor which handles advertising along the line and at bus shelters. But that changed Wednesday when company officials called Larsen to okay the ads. “They called to apologize for what was called a miscommunication, and so we have that option now,” Larsen said, adding Sensible BC has not decided how it will proceed to drum up public support for its campaign. The request to advertise with Pattison Outdoor was made in May and Sensible BC provided the company with several versions of the ad they wanted to use. But each one was rejected. When Larsen tried to get an answer why,

he said officials at Pattision Outdoor did not offer clear explanations, and eventually stopped taking his calls and emails. The ad asks readers to “Join the Sensible BC Marijuana Referendum Campaign,” and lists Sensible BC’s website address below (www.SensibleBC.ca). On the left side of the ad is a large marijuana leaf. “I’ve seen other ads they’ve (Pattison Outdoor) run with marijuana leaves on them, so I didn’t really know what the problem was,” Larsen said, adding Sensible BC has placed an ad with Astral Media in West Vancouver. Sensible BC went public with the Canada Line snub, and now the ads have been okayed. “I guess they got a bunch of media calls and changed their mind,” Larsen said, adding his most recent discussion with Pattison Outdoor was positive. “I’m not sure exactly what we want to do, or run with them, but it is nice the situation has been resolved.” Sensible BC’s budget for advertising is around $500,000, a portion of which is earmarked for billboards.

Calls to Pattison Outdoor were not returned in time for the News’ deadline. The ads are part of a campaign similar to the one enacted by the anti-HST group that sought to repeal the unpopular tax which combined the PST and GST. Larsen said his organization’s goal is to have the Sensible Policing Act — a piece of legislation Sensible BC has written — brought forward and passed into law decriminalizing marijuana use. “Although the (B.C.) Legislature could do it in a normal fashion, we’re working

towards a referendum,” Larsen said. That requires 10 per cent of registered voters — a total of around 400,000 — to sign a petition in every electoral district across the province over a 90-day period. And Richmond’s three districts were seen as key areas to raise awareness of the campaign. Plus, the Canada Line ads would have reached others across the Lower Mainland. Larsen said plans are to start the threemonth, sign-up process in September. “Right now, we’re still building awareness, see B.C. page 4

YOUR KONTINENT

Film and arts festival set to light up the city BY PHILIP RAPHAEL

praphael@richmond-news.com

Film and art fans, get ready for more than a week of movies and displays as the Your Kontinent: Richmond International Film & Media Arts Festival lights up screens and public spaces in town next month. Held at Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate), this year’s event is tripled in length from the one in 2012. The extension was a response to the surge of positive feedback organizers received after the last festival. “The feedback was from audiences was overwhelming that the festival was too short,” said Ying Wang, the festival’s director. This year, the event runs from July 19-27. The extended length also provides a better opportunity to further enhance Richmond’s reputation as a multicultural and artistic hub in the Lower Mainland. It’s a feature Richmond City Coun. Chak Au was proud to speak about at the festival’s media kick-off Wednesday morning. “Richmond, as you know, has a very strong commitment to promote and support art activities,” Au told a gathering of reporters at Richmond City Hall, “because we recognize that arts, culture and heritage are very important things in

our city.” Au added, it creates chances for the overall development of the “quality of life of our citizens.” “I think the arts strategy of a city is to broaden diversity of art experience and opportunities,” Au said. “And I think this festival not only embraces the diversity of space and form, but also brings together local an international artists under one umbrella.” On the movie side of the festival, the films on show will include an eclectic mix from around the globe — from Russia (Chapiteau Show) to Germany (Dragon Girls) and the Philippines (Harana) to South Korea (Doomsday Book). Local talent will also be screened in the Short Film Program. Headlining this year’s featured artist program is Dana Claxton and Pisui Clyo. Claxton will be showing three sitespecific works during the festival. On July 19, her video installation entitled Rattle and Video Tipi will kick of the event at the public opening. It features a tipi, 30-feet in diameter which will be used to project videos on to during the evenings. Then. on July 20, Claxton with the help of the community, will construct a large medicine wheel. Claxton said the medicine wheel is

for the people of Richmond to “embrace each other in positive and supportive ways, and to live in harmony.” Clyo, an award-winning theatre director, playwright and flamenco dancer will exhibit her multi disciplinary piece, Her Silent Innermost. Youth will be included at the festival with the (YOU)TH+(ME)DIA Day on July 20. It is designed to inspire young filmmakers aged 14 to 19 who will be able to meet with experienced industry experts. Workshops will also be offered and include the chance to use professional equipment at the Mock Movie Set. The $15 fee also includes lunch. Something unique to the event and free to view is the Art in Containers exhibition where shipping containers set up on the pedestrian plaza of the cultural centre are transformed into pop-up galleries showcasing emerging artists. According to the festival’s website, this year’s exhibition features themes of introspection and imagination, beauty and reality. Tickets to the festival start at $8 for movies. The Dim Sum Movie, which combines a film and dim sum dining at Shiang Garden Seafood Restaurant, is $45, and a Festival Pass is $60. For more information, call 778-8693278, or visit ykfestival.ca.

Catering to the buck?

I

t is abundantly clear that not all land uses are created equal. Pressure is being brought to bear throughout the Lower Mainland in an effort to ensure our finite amount of real estate is put to what is often characterized as its best or highest use. There’s an ever-growing push to convert property, often agricultural, to industrial purposes as well as to turn what have been single-family zones into higher density pockets. It’s argued, and there’s certainly validity to it, that people need jobs as well as places to live. We recognize such evolution in land use is simply the nature of the beast when dealing with a burgeoning population, but the argument seems to be somewhat selective. We also require schools and parks and land to grow the food we eat. We have a great many needs when it comes to land use, everything from transportation corridors and shopping districts to recreational amenities and natural areas. That’s not to say those areas have necessarily been overlooked, but the urgency to address any deficiencies in those sectors doesn’t appear to be as great as it is in others. If you’re in a charitable mood and willing to offer the benefit of the doubt, then perhaps there are certain needs that rank higher on the pecking order than others, so maybe providing homes and employment opportunities should take precedence over everything else. But when it comes to changing land use, are we catering to society’s needs or simply catering to the almighty buck? Yes, jobs and homes are of the utmost importance, but we can’t lose sight of those other factors, including ones that directly contribute to our quality of life. The livability of the region depends on our ability to make that distinction.

CHOICE WORDS

Read the News today, oh boy! The Editor, There’s a great Anne Murray song called, A Little Good News, with the words, “There’s the local newspaper rolled up in a rubber band — one more sad story, is one more than I can stand.” It’s about how wonderful it would be to pick up the paper and for there to be only good stories. Well, when I picked up the Richmond News, and read it front to back, I was truly struck by all the “good” stories. There was the heartwarming story about Zach Wilkinson, who helped to save and reunite a family of ducks, a security guard who delivered a baby at Aberdeen Mall, another about students at Mitchell School raising awareness about children in Third World countries, and Craig Widsten, who would like to transfer the many wild rabbits in Richmond to his seven acre island, and then the one about the City of Richmond and local schools adopting a water waste program. People stepping up . . going above and beyond. With all the bad news of late — with all the animal abuse stories, the stories of corruption, murders, etc. etc. . . . I was truly starting to wonder about our society. What’s wrong with people? I only saw things as getting worse. So, a huge thank-you to Zach, and the security guard, and Mitchell school, and Craig Widsten . . . and the City of Richmond, and to everyone else out there doing things like this that don’t get reported — thank you. You’ve renewed my faith, and I needed it. Yes, there are bad people out there, but, wow, there are so many fantastic people too. And a lot of them live in my city! In the Anne Murray song, she also wishes the newspaper would read, “Not much to print today, can’t find nothin’ bad to say.” You guys did one better. You found a whole bunch of good things to print! Thank you, Trudy Howard Richmond

Cancer steals away our futures The Langley Relay for Life is here, and with it a host of reasons to again support the cause of cancer research. I was recently privileged to meet Jack and Malcolm Shields. Malcolm is busy racking up an impressive fundraising total for the Relay for Life as part of his elementary school team, in honour of Jack’s fight with leukemia. The good news is, Jack will likely win that fight. He’ll win because of countless hundreds of millions of dollars that have been poured into cancer research in the last 75 years. Dozens of cancers have moved along a spectrum from always fatal, to mostly fatal, to 50/50, to treatable, to cureable. Treatments are improving in ways that don’t just extend life, they improve quality of life. If you visit the TRIUMF particle accelerator at UBC, you might see cancer patients leaving. It turned out that one particular kind of eye cancer is susceptible to the sort of charged particles you can only generate when you have a couple of electromagnets the size of football fields. Those patients previously would have been treated by having an eye removed; now they get to keep both eyes. Other cancers would have required amputations and now do not, some cancers required painful surgeries that are now less

Matthew Claxton PA I N F U L T RU T H

invasive. Things change, one treatment at a time. But not every cancer is cureable. Cancer is a hydra, cut off one head and another one, or two, or dozen, seem to grow in its place. We’ve learned how to cut out cancers, we’ve learned how to zap them with radiation, how to poison them with chemotherapy. But some hide from the surgeon’s knife, they resist radiation, they can’t be poisoned. The cancer that killed my father in 1995 wasn’t amenable to treatment. It’s still not, today. This week, Scottish writer Iain Banks’s novel The Quarry was published, about a man dealing with terminal cancer. Banks was writing the last few thousand words when he went to the doctor about a sore back and was told he had terminal gall bladder cancer, and had just a few months to live. He died on June 9. Banks is one of my favourite authors, with two distinctive fan bases. He wrote stories set in modern day Britain, and with the middle initial M., he wrote some of the most audacious science fiction of the last 30 years. He was a hopeful

cynic, someone who could fill his books with humans (and aliens) who are quarrelsome, shortsighted, stupid, vicious, and violent, and yet make you believe that the universe was not all doom and gloom. His main achievement was his novels about the Culture, a vast, galactic society that had achieved the closest thing possible to utopia. He picked away at his own perfect world, teasing out every flaw and questioning every assumption. Just before he died, Banks said he was hoping to live long enough to actually write another Culture novel. He never got the chance. He was 59. I hate cancer, I’m angry at cancer, because it cuts off thousands of futures. Banks draws attention because he had many fans, but it’s no less cruel when cancer cuts short the life of a 10-yearold, or a teenager, a new mother or father, someone hoping to welcome a new grandchild into the world. Relay for Life will pour money into the Canadian Cancer Society, which along with many other groups will fund research. It will find new ways to cross some more cancers off the fatal list. Cancer research is a time machine, in a way. It lets people travel to the future, one day at a time. Donating to a cure is giving the gift of tomorrow. OLYMPIC OVAL

Sums don’t add up

The Editor, To put it mildly there is something a bit bizarre about the figures Mayor Brodie keeps touting about his beloved “Owe-Val.” First of all, he claims 600,000 tourists visited the Owe-Val last year. If it is open every day of the year, this means that about 1,700 tourists visited every day or, for a working day from 7 a.m. till 11 p.m., approximately 100 arrived every hour — two busloads. Or maybe they only came at the weekends — all 12,000 of them? I hope the staff were able to cope. Recently, a Richmond taxpayer tried to visit this facility and was informed that the entry fee is $16 for all visitors, so the revenue from these 600,000 tourists should work out to $9,600,000. This is a considerable sum, but there was no mention of it in the “2012 Report to the Community.” I would have thought it would be an item Mayor Brodie would be very proud to pass on to the taxpayers. As further revenue, 5,000 members pay

$60 per month, which equates to $3.6 million per year, and when the annual transfer of casino funds of $5 million and the Olympic Legacy Fund donation are added, we are looking at well over $20 million. So why does the council find it necessary to make a contribution of “about $3 million” of taxpayers’ money for operating costs when they should be awash with money from all this revenue? And can I ask is there an Einstein in Richmond who can explain how, although city hall contributed $3 million for operating costs, the net effective costs to the city of operating was only $7,000 (Mayor Brodie’s words!)? Mayor Brodie, why don’t you publish a fully audited financial report in the local papers, so we can all see and understand exactly what the correct picture is with your beloved Owe-Val? All that we can tell right now is that it is one unholy mess and will only get worse. Robert M. Paul Richmond

Paying for club I can’t afford The Editor, I read with much excitement that our Richmond Oval has made a “ profit”! Of course, such positive news makes one wish to do Olympic-calibre cartwheels and is more evidence that the ancient art of creative accounting is alive and well. I, as a Richmond taxpayer/Oval shareholder, naively thought I would go and “kick the tires” and see how our communal investment portfolio is going first hand. However, low and behold, upon inquiry, I found that my attempt at personal due diligence would cost me, at minimum, $16. Yes, peering inside from the Oval’s outside like a humble pleb is free of charge, as is

viewing from a small “crowsnest” viewing area at the Oval’s south end accessed from the main entrance area. However, should you wish to simply walk the inside of the Oval, but not at all participate, the minimum is $16 for older adults. On the one hand, such a cover charge to simply enter and peruse a publically-owned facility must be a gold medal winner on the global scale. Or, more succintly, the Oval is nothing more than a taxpayer-subsidized “private club” and a white elephant monument to political and bureaucratic egos. R.A. Hoegler Richmond

Summer is here and people’s thoughts turn to changing titles? I have lately received numerous requests for information about what is involved in transferring titles to land. Mostly it involves children. It can be done, but in my opinion, only after some thought and planning. First, take a look at what kind of property it is. If you are considering your principal residence, transfers to certain persons are exempt from Property Transfer Tax. Second, consider to whom you want to transfer title. The first question here is whether the person involved lives at the property. If not, the result may be that the person transferring may incur a (taxable) capital gain. Third, you need to consider whether the transfer should be a gift. That may assist with tax concerns. Finally, consider the status of the person about to get on your title. If they are at risk for matrimonial issues or financial trouble in future, you may need to reconsider. In my view, it is not “the end of the world” if a person elects not to transfer and their property falls into their Estate, and then is exposed to Probate fees. Whatever you choose to do, get good advice, and think carefully.

Taking leap of faith across gender gap As he settles into his first job in ballet, Graham Kaplan recalls the day he donned tights and stepped into a class full of girls BY A LAN C AMPBELL

acampbell@richmond-news.com

A

s he slipped quietly into the studio, a shy, 12-year-old Graham Kaplan was nervous enough about being the only boy in a room full of girls. The glaring fact he was wearing tights for the first time in his life only saddled more weight onto his self-conscious mind. “It was definitely different for me,” said Kaplan, now 20. “I already had training for the other disciplines, but there was fear; it was something completely new.” Kaplan remembers vividly his first ever day in ballet class at Richmond’s Urban Dance Company. That day seems like a lifetime ago for Kaplan, who has just started his first professional job as a dancer — an apprenticeship with the contemporary ballet company BJM Danse, formerly known as Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal. Spinning his mind back to the opening act of his ballet life, as outgoing as Kaplan was — he’d progressed from a nine-year-old through hiphop, tap and jazz genres — boys in ballet was still very rare, even eight years ago. And before discovering a passion and latent talent for dance, Kaplan was into sports like many other eight-year-old boys. The leap into hip-hop was fine — pretty cool for most boys. Even tap and then jazz would have, at best, raised an eyebrow of a buddy or classmate. But, priming himself to be finger-pointed by other boys, it was with trepidation that he took the next big step of venturing into the predominantly female world of ballet. “I was very intrigued by it all, and I knew it was something I wanted to do,” said Kaplan, who was advised the best foundation for a career in dance was learning ballet. “There was definitely a bit of teasing and making fun; being a boy and everything. “It was still very unusual and there was still some discrimination and misunderstanding of it all.” However, thanks to some advice by Urban Dance’s artistic director, Wendy Lee Riley, Kaplan was armed with the perfect comeback to any poking from so-called friends. “I just told them that I’m surrounded by girls wearing tight clothes, and I get to hold them all the time,” he said, pointing out that he didn’t have to wear a tutu. “But all that aside, I knew early on this was the way to go for me. It was vital for my future.” Thankfully, being in or around the spotlight was not totally alien for Kaplan, having grown up assisting his magician dad, John, on stage for years. “He always needed tricks and dancers in his show,” he recalled. “But it was my mom who decided to put me into a structured class.” Also, around that time, TV’s So You Think You Can Dance came out and Kaplan was mesmerized and inspired by the male talent on the show. “It made me realize I need to strengthen up on my technique, as, quite often, the best dancers had a really strong ballet background.” Having just graduated from the Arts Umbrella program for aspiring dancers on Granville Island after two years, an excited Kaplan is now in Montreal with BJM Danse and preparing to jet off on a world tour, including Italy, France and Israel. Now he’s broken through and beginning to forge a career, Kaplan has some sound advice of his own for any young boy thinking of following a similar path. “It’s a lot of hard work and you need to really love it to do it,” he said. “If there’s something else that you love just as much, you should maybe consider that. “But being on stage is like no other experience; it’s such a rush being up there.”

Tanner, 10, lightly treads beaten path into ballet

JOHN CORREA/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Tanner March has no problem being the only boy in his ballet class. In fact, his mom says, if he got his own way, he’d spend every hour of every day in the studio.

n his second year of gracing the studio of the ballet class, 10year-old Tanner March doesn’t look an inch out of place. He might be the only boy in his class, but since the inception and subsequent popularity of TV shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, the days of snickers and surprise at males in tight pants and featherweight slippers are long gone. Indeed, Tanner — who’s been at the Urban Dance Company since he was six — has yet to hear one negative comment or jibe about his love of ballet. “He’s been in a girls’ world for many years now, it’s not that big of a deal any more,” said his proud mom, Janice. “At the beginning, he didn’t take any convincing. When he was told it would be good for his over-

all technique, he basically looked at the schedule and took the initiative. We didn’t have any further discussion. “As for teasing, there’s none that I know of, but it is part of growing up, I guess, and he’s a confident enough boy to handle it, I think.” Like Graham Kaplan, who started out at Urban Dance aged nine, Tanner eased into ballet via the hip-hop, tap and jazz genres. Such a route into ballet is now a well-trodden path for boys, more of whom are realizing the graceful discipline provides a solid foundation for a career in dance. Even still, strapping on his ballet shoes a couple of times a week is not something he routinely discusses with his Grade 5 classmates at Brighouse elementary. “If he dances at school, it’s

normally tap and hip-hop,” March added. “He has eight classes a week for all different genres, each lasting for an hour. “But he would spend every waking hour in the studio if he could. Once he went into the studio for his first ballet class, he loved it. “It was a bigger leap to ballet as there’s still a kind of stereotype that might lead to boys getting made fun of.” As for following in the footsteps of Kaplan, Tanner isn’t quite sure and is just reveling in his love of all things dance. “We’re not sure which direction he’ll take, he definitely loves dance and loves the challenge,” said his mom.

JOHN CORREA/SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Tanner March doesn’t look out of place in his ballet class. The Brighouse elementary student made his own decision to step into ballet, believing the discipline would benefit his dancing technique.

So, the boys realize they can dance: Instructor TV shows inspiring boys to T take up dance classes

hey may have been split a decade apart, but their first ever dance instructor can immediately draw comparisons between Graham Kaplan and Tanner March. Wendy Lee Riley recognizes the common bond between Kaplan and March — they had a fire in their eyes and a spring in their step in the early days of gracing the floor of one of her ballet classes. Riley recalls with ease her first encounters with Kaplan as, 10 years ago, having more than one or two boys in her many dance classes was an exception to the rule. “We had a couple of boys, but not many in ballet,” said the Urban Dance Company’s artistic director. “But since all those TV shows about dancing, boys are more open-minded about it. (Graham) was always very eager and definitely had a lot of talent, starting off

in hip-hop; but it didn’t take much to push him into tap and then jazz and then ballet, when he realized how important it was. “And I see the same thing happening with Tanner. I sat down with his parents and said to them, ‘if this is your son’s path, then ballet has all the technical foundation he will need.’” But it’s not all sweetness and light convincing boys to step into what is, still, very much a women’s world. “You have to handle them with kid gloves, and it always has to be their choice,” said Riley. “And we have to accept it might be difficult for them outside of the studio. “Graham’s friends all played hockey and he did get razzed about it. “I’m extremely proud of him and what he’s achieved so far. I knew very early that he could go somewhere in the world of

dance, as he had a wonderful dedication.” It’s not just the boy that has to deal with the transition into ballet — the parents, in particular the male, often find it difficult. “In a lot of the cases, it’s hard for the fathers; mothers are more open about it,” said Riley. “It’s harder for the fathers to say, ‘My son’s a dancer.’” And in terms of the sexuality of male ballet dancers, “There’s still a little bit of stigma attached to it,” Riley added. “But people are much more open-minded now and there are so many male dancers out there these days. People’s attitudes are changing.” Currently, at least 30 per cent of the students at Urban Dance are boys, compared to 10 per cent a decade ago. “It’s becoming more and more popular for boys to get involved and I think that will continue,” said Riley.

The Curse of the Desk Jockey – Part II Or:“How changing your gym regime is only part of the story!”

GetFitwithJosh

In my last article, “The Curse of the Desk Jockey”, I explained how as a general population we tend to sit way too much, leading to a multitude of chronic problems ranging from knee pain, to low back pain, to shoulder pain, and everything in between. That article went on to provide a few tips for your time at the gym – fewer crunches, more back exercises, fewer chest exercises, and a new way to warm up.

But let’s face it. The facts are you spend far fewer hours at the gym than you spend flying your desk. The real progress in preventing these aches and pains will be made in 23 hours in your day.

A FEW TIPS DON’T Stretch the Heck Out of Your Hamstrings: Although not a universal rule, if you tend to be too hunched over in the low back your

hamstrings are likely in a constant state of stretch anyway due to the position of your pelvis.Stretching only compounds the problem.

DO Hip Flexor and Pectoral (chest) Stretches: Your hip flexor muscles are

likely stiff and short already from constantly being in a shortened state (sitting).Stretching these muscles will help allow your pelvis to return to a neutral position. Likewise, your chest muscles are likely short and stiff from typing on a computer all day, so stretching your chest will allow your shoulders to sit back more. Try finding four 1-minute breaks during your work-day, to do a hip flexor stretch and pec stretch for 30sec each.

DO beware the laptop and cellphone keyboards. Aside from the

fact that these keyboards are so small we literally have to hunch over them, due to their portability we tend to sit in positions that are often far from optimal, and occasionally incredibly creative and absurd.

too long then their face would stay like that? Well, this time it’s true!.

DON’T Sleep On Your Stomach:

Especially if you have your arms folded under your pillow, this puts your lumbar spine in a position of hyperextension and your shoulders in a position of internal rotation/pronation (precisely what we are trying to correct).

DO Try To Sleep On Your Side: Putting a pillow in between your legs and resting your head on a surface in line with your spine keeps you in a neutral position and fully supported. DON’T Wear High Heels: I am going

to make some of my female friends angry with this one (and some of my guy friends too), but put away those Michael Kors pumps.I know they look nice on the morning Skytrain and cost you a pretty penny, but do you really wonder why your feet (and back) hurt so much when you get home in the evening? At least consider keeping a pair of more posture-friendly shoes at the office to change into. A few simple ideas, perhaps, but sim-

Bag To Earth makes products to ease the composting process and encourage participation in municipally run food waste programs

W

Bag to Earth Inc.

ith municipalities across the Lower Mainland – including Vancouver, North Vancouver, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey and New Westminster, among others – participating in city-run food waste programs, one Canadian company has come up with a way to ease the composting process for residents. “The issue that crops up time and time again when you ask people to compost their kitchen waste in order to keep [organic material] out of the landfill is that it can, quite frankly, be a bit of a messy endeavour,” says Carson O’Neill, CEO of Bag To Earth Inc. “But the fact remains that these municipal food waste programs are a good idea. They really do work from an environmental perspective, so our aim is to make it easy and convenient – as hassle-free a process as possible – in order to encourage more participation.” He points to his firm’s Food Waste Bags, made from all-natural materials designed to disappear fully into the earth along with any

approved food scraps you toss into them. The bags, which come in two sizes, are comprised of a paper exterior lined with a patented natural fibre made from cellulose – a kind of “clear paper” that’s been in use for at least a century. “We’ve actually had consumers contact us after looking inside our bags and mistaking the lining for plastic, which, of course, it isn’t,” O’Neill states. “Cellulose is a 100% compostable material that will fully disappear back into the earth, just like the coffee grounds, eggshells, spaghetti sauce and banana peels you put into our bags. In other words, it helps to complete the organic loop.” Plastic bags, even those labelled biodegradable or compostable, he continues, have no place in an organic food waste program, as they actually “back up” the process. “Say you line the green bin that’s in your kitchen or the larger one on your curb with plastic and then you put your organics directly into that plastic for pickup,” he says. “What you end up with is a plastic bag sitting in the city’s compost site and backing it up because it’s a non-compostable material. It totally negates the purpose.” By lining your kitchen and/or outdoor bin with a Bag To Earth Food Waste Bag, however, all of the material – food waste and bag – that’s taken from your home by your municipality will return to the earth in its entirety. The question remains: why would any well-meaning resident put plastic inside a bin, when the contents of that bin are meant for compost? O’Neill says it often comes down to cleanliness. “Leftover food scraps can be slimy and stinky, and even those of us with the best intentions when it comes to the environment may be deterred from participating in a composting program due to the mess,”

“Our aim is to make it easy and convenient – as hassle-free a process as possible – in order to encourage more participation in municipal food waste composting programs”

– Carson O’Neill, CEO, Bag To Earth Inc.

Bag to Earth Inc.

By Noa Glouberman

Bag To Earth Food Waste Bags are made from all-natural materials designed to disappear fully into the earth along with any approved food scraps you toss into them, thus helping to complete the organic loop. he says. “Our Food Waste Bags, however, solve this problem by keeping your bins clean and odour free.” Not only is the cellulose liner in every Bag To Earth Food Waste Bag totally leak-proof, keeping unpleasant smells from escaping is as simple as rolling down the top of the bag and sealing it with a clip or clothespin. Additionally, each Food Waste Bag’s flat bottom means it can either be placed in your green bin or set as a standalone right on your kitchen counter. “When the bag’s full, just run it out and put it in your curbside bin,” says O’Neill. “No need to dump it out; the bag goes right in and returns to the earth completely, from the lining to the tie … right down to the print on the exterior. And, if you wish, line your outdoor bin with one of our larger-sized bags. You won’t need to hose down the interior due to food scraps getting stuck on the sides and making a mess.” Each small Bag To Earth Food Waste Bag, one of which will last a family of four about a week (just enough time to fill and place curbside for pickup), costs approximately $0.50 – that’s just $26 a year. Again, O’Neill emphasizes the fact that “nothing about our Food Waste Bags compromises the composting aspect.” In fact, Bag To Earth relies on the success of municipally run food waste programs. “We follow these programs very closely and regularly update our website with the latest information from across the country,” he says. “Consumers are more than welcome to visit www.bagtoearth.com to find details about their local food waste program, as well as a list of retailers in their area that carry our products.”

in her mind. No punishment necessary. If a child has made a mistake because he simply did not know the rule or has never been in that particular situation before, a punishment is not necessary. Simply educate the child why something like putting a jerry can of gasoline next to the campfire is extremely dangerous. If he did it out of ignorance, it is sufficient to inform him. If he does it again after being informed, then a consequence would be necessary. Perhaps having to sit out of a fun activity. Why would a child purposely defy you when he knows better? Was he seeking attention? Was he mad about unfair treatment and being defiant out of spite for vengeance? Once you figure out the root problem, address that and the misbehaviour will decrease. Another example is if your child is acting up because she’s anxious. Pushing her to do something by herself by threatening a punishment if she doesn’t do it will likely escalate the misbehaviour. Giving an anxious child a time-out will also often cause her to take the tantrum up a notch because isolation provokes the anxiety that caused the problem behaviour in the first place. The best way to discipline an anxious child is with training instead of consequences. Practice the activities that make her anxious ahead of time until she feels more comfortable. Visit places with her prior to sending her there on her own. Discuss what the new environment or activity will

be like so she knows what to expect and can be prepared. Instill assertiveness, confidence, and coping strategies so she can face situations outside of her comfort zone with more skill. Finally, if a teenager is completely disregarding all family rules, punishment likely has no impact because there probably isn’t a punishment harsh enough for them to care. You can take away all their things and they’ll just steal them back; you can ground them and they’ll just sneak out; you can threaten to kick them out of the house and they’ll just leave. Expulsion from school, juvenile detention, estrangement from their family — nothing seems to motivate them to behave better. Why? In some cases, the reason someone misbehaves with such disregard for themselves or others is because they don’t feel worthy or like they belong. There are a lot of reasons why a teen might feel disenfranchised, and it’s not always because they don’t have a supportive family. In cases like this, the teen and family need to work on connecting, communicating, and understanding each other. It will likely require professional intervention. To summarize, discipline is a lesson and doesn’t always require a punishment. If a child can learn the lesson without being punished, that’s good. There is no need to be punitive if the child understands and won’t do it again. Danielle Aldcorn BSW, MA is a registered clinical counsellor at the Satori Integrative Health Centre.

Are you shocked and slack-jawed about the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that will arrive later this year? Who can really blame you. After all, it was the immensely popular — and very square — XJ-designated Cherokee that introduced truckloads of buyers to the virtues of four-wheeldrive as far back as 1984. For the next two decades, it remained steadfastly unchanged until the Liberty stepped in for the 2002 model year. With the Liberty’s retirement, however, ChryslerFiat’s off-road division has resurrected the Cherokee brand, but with a significant — and controversial — shift in direction. For starters, instead of the brick-like original, the latest model has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers have undertaken in creating the new Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise . . . until now, that is. It’s as if the designers snuck a futuristic concept model out the back door and ordered up full production before any of the higher-ups got wise to the plan. The rest of the sheet metal appears pretty tame by comparison, but encasing the body in protective lower cladding gives the Cherokee a handsomely rugged silhouette. The interior is also as modern as the outside. In the last few years Jeep has switched from utilitarian hard plastic dashboards to creating inviting soft-touch shapes. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7 or 21-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. The split-folding and fore-/aft-sliding second-row seat is standard, while an available fold-flat front passenger seat has storage beneath the flip-up bottom cushion. Concurrent with its

ground-breaking design, the 2014 Cherokee takes a fresh approach with its powertrain offerings. Base models feature a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre four-cylinder worth 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Optional is an all-new 3.2-litre V6 that’s rated at 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler plus numerous other models such as the Ram pickup. In the case of the Cherokee, selecting the V6 provides a 2,040-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions; it’s the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler. That’s also five more ratios than the outgoing Liberty had, while Jeep claims it helps produce crisp off-theline launches and contributes to the Cherokee’s 6.3 l/100 km highway rating for the 2.4 and 6.7 l/100 km for the 3.2. Jeep hasn’t released city numbers yet. Front-wheel-drive is the Cherokee norm, but buyers will be able to choose from three different four-wheeldrive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, Latitude and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in the same models, comes with a twospeed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four or sixcylinder engines. However, for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (that increases ride height by an 2.5 centimetres), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a fullsize spare. Pricing for the base Cherokee Sport will likely start in the upper-$20,000 range

‘Lip stick’ adds allure

SUMITTED PHOTO

A touch of fresh paint here and there can make things feel more comfy, and is one of the easiest ways to entice buyers to choose your home.

A touch-up or two can help make buyers fall in love When it comes to putting the best face forward on your home, sometimes a “lipstick” renovation is all that is needed to make a potential buyer fall in love. “Fresh paint, new address numbers and a good cleanup can really make a difference,” advises real estate consultant Ozzie Jurock. “Such lipstick renovations can really pay off.” “First impressions are everything when selling your home, and paint is the easiest and least expensive way to create an appealing atmosphere for potential buyers,” says paint expert Alison Goldman, of CIL paint. “The more attractive and comfortable you make your home, the more it will entice prospective buyers to make an offer.” According to Goldman, vendors can be a bit daring with their colour choice. “Contrary to popular belief, colours with personality have been shown to be more effective at closing a deal. In fact, soothing shades of green, brown and yellow paint may even help a home sell faster than white or beige.” She recommends earth tones such as muted shades of green, brown, yellow, blue, red, grey and tan. “They create a warm and inviting environment.” There are some tips when freshening the home for suitors, er, buyers,

• Look at the property from a buyer’s perspective. Don’t think of it as your home anymore. You’re selling a product now. • Since your furnishings will be going with you when you move, select a colour scheme best suited to stationary items, such as flooring, cabinetry and countertops. When choosing paint for a living or dining room, for example, hold paint swatches right next to the floor, not only in the middle of the wall, to ensure the tones work well together. Painting a focal wall in a warm colour adds personality to a room and may draw increased interest from prospects. This technique is especially effective in key rooms like the master bedroom and dining area, where a splash of colour adds charm to a space without overwhelming it. Use colour to highlight impressive features of a home or detract from less desirable elements. For example, upgrades such as crown moulding can be accented by painting them a colour that contrasts slightly with the walls. Smaller spaces can be visually expanded with shades of cool blue or muted green, and a dark entryway can be warmed up with sunny yellow to maximize the play of light. “For a minimum invest-ment, paint can help yield maximum return when selling your home,” Goldman says.

I have enjoyed the privilege of offering Buyers and Sellers in the Lower Mainland award winning service for over 16 years. I have also had the opportunity to work for some of the largest residential real estate developers in BC and some of the smaller boutique style firms who specialize in unique and one of a kind developments. Residing in Steveston for the past 30 years, I have attained an extensive knowledge of the Real Estate market in Steveston, Richmond and the Lower Mainland.

Why do I love working in real estate? I believe that real estate provides an incredible opportunity for a person to invest in their future. Buying property not only provides you with an asset, it can also generate an additional income for you and provide an opportunity to make a generous profit upon resale. People will always need homes, and in any market there are opportunities for either a Buyer or a Seller. That is why I chose a career in real estate, to help people invest in their future.

Some achievements I am proud to share are the MLS Medallion Club 2007, 2009 and 2011; the Sutton Masters Award for 2008; Sutton Diamond Award for 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011; and the Sutton Platinum Award for 2006 and 2012. I genuinely love what I do, so please feel free to contact me if I can be of any assistance in your Real Estate journey or to provide you with information on current market trends.. Whether you are a first time homebuyer, looking to sell your property or an experienced investor, I can provide you with comprehensive Real Estate solutions.

As a REALTOR® with Macdonald Realty Westmar I proudly work in the Richmond community - the city I will always call my home! Latham

A top producing, award winning Realtor for the past 23 years... That’s just the icing on the cake. What makes me happy is doing what’s best for the people who choose me to help them buy or sell their home.

Why do you need the help of Steve Latham and the Wolf Team at Re/Max? The market is changing and you can benefit from our years of experience. We have sold homes in all kinds of market conditions. Let our Multi Cultural team of Real Estate professions help you achieve the goal of selling your home for the most money in the shortest amount of time.

If you are buying your first home in the Lower Mainland this year, you are making a good decision. The thing that home buyers most often regret is they didn’t buy five years earlier than they did. Yet, when purchasing in this market, there are some guidelines that are different than in other regions. First, be coldly realistic about what you can afford. Don’t buy on emotion: do the math. You can purchase with a five per cent down payment, but it is better to save up for 10 per cent to 20 per cent down. This will reduce or eliminate the cost of mortgage insurance, which is mandatory on high-ratio home loans. Stick to what you can afford. Mortgage repayments should not account for more than 40 per cent of your monthly income, preferably less. Anything more leaves you with little, if any, leftover once other home ownership cost and living expenses are accounted for. Get a pre-approved mortgage, which is usually good for 60 days and will provide an accurate price level to shop in. Don’t be spooked by media reports of super high prices. For instance, a search of www.rew.ca turns up more than 200 homes

Bari RealEstate Bridgewater Research: Scan the market Continued from page 28 Research the neighbourhood you want to buy in. Spend time visiting open houses to get a feel of what is available. Use Google street view to check out areas you are not familiar with. Contact a real estate agent when you have a definite price and neighbourhood in mind and prepare to work closely with him or her. There are thousands of homes on today’s market and your agent has or can quickly get

information on each and every one. Remember the additional costs, such as appraisal fees, legal fees, home inspection fees and property taxes and strata fees, if you are buying a condo. You may also want to set aside money for small renovations. Also, if the condo has a big fitness centre or swimming pool, the strata fees will likely be higher. Be patient. You will be living in the home for years, so time spent finding the ideal home for you is time well spent.

They currently hang on the second and third floors. The fundraiser runs until Monday, June 24 with an open house this Sunday between 2 and 5 p.m. Board members and staff will be present to assist with the bidding. Woo’s pieces depict landscapes, mostly of Richmond, with the thick strokes and colour play of an Expressionist. Her surroundings become her inspiration, as she often takes long walks through Finn Slough and returns home with a fresh idea for a painting. Much of her work depicts the mountains looming in the background, but each time, a different colour scheme indicates the time of day from sunrise to sunset. “I really like using colour, and painting scenes from Mother Nature and the mountains,” said Woo.

“There’s beauty all over the place here.” Woo moved to the Lower Mainland from Taiwan in 1971. She wanted to start a new life with her two young children after her pilot husband died in a tragic accident. Without knowing anybody in Canada, she decided to try the west coast, since it was closer to Taiwan. That way, she felt like she could always go back home. However, as soon as she saw her new house, the British Columbian landscape stole her heart. “It was like out of a fairy tale,” said the recent greatgrandmother. “I just loved the place right away and I knew I was going to stay.” The decades that followed were a struggle as Woo took various jobs to support her young family. Any thoughts of being an artist she may have entertained as a child had to make way for more practical considerations. It wasn’t until after she retired in 1991 that she was able to seriously pick up the brush and pursue a post-

retirement hobby as a visual artist. Since then, she joined the Richmond Artist Guild and took classes at Emily Carr. It was there that she had the chance to work with one of her favourite B.C. artists, landscape painter Michael O’Toole. “I love the work of Michael O’Toole and the lose brushstrokes he uses when painting,” she said. Although still affected by the sudden loss of her husband, Woo allows art to become the spiritual connection with her soul, using it to get in touch with her feelings. “Art feeds people spiritually,” she said. “It allows them to build a sense of creativity. In nature, there’s no life without light. That’s what art is like, like light. It causes people to see and feel things they wouldn’t otherwise.” For more information about Woo, visit richmondartistguild.com.
