City slammed for yes promo Jail time sought for dog walker

Is the City of Richmond justified in promoting the “yes” side of the upcoming Metro Vancouver transit tax referendum?

Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation thinks not.

“They’re trying to spend millions of dollars, everything from $4 million from TransLink down to tweets from city staff, to con taxpayers,” said Bateman, who is procuring support to oppose the Metro Vancouver Mayor’s Council’s proposed 0.5 per cent regional sales tax that will fund TransLink services and projects, such as a new Pattullo Bridge and light rail in Surrey.

On Twitter, while not explicitly endorsing a “yes” vote, the city has retweeted and linked to partisan websites and columns, even though city council has not officially endorsed any one side of the March referendum.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said there is a difference between advertising information and expressing an opinion.

But the city has yet to advertise information about the “no” side, noted Bateman, who called the de-facto endorsements “Banana Republic” democracy in action.

“It’s a ridiculous violation of the city’s democratic principles. Without having council direction, they shouldn’t be endorsing the referendum,” said Bateman.

The referendum is uncharted waters for local governments, given that it’s the first time in Canada the public is being asked to vote on a tax increase, according to Andrew Coyne of the National Post.

“But even if council does (endorse) it, taxpayers’ resources shouldn’t be spent on political campaigns,” he added.

The issue at heart is the fact councillors are representatives of the public, which is being tasked to decide on the tax.

More money is desperately needed to fund the public transit system, but there is debate as to whether the likes of the City of Richmond should be steering people to vote ‘yes’ in an upcoming referendum without city council backing. could best be described as wavering.

For instance, Coun. Alexa Loo expressed her opposition to the referendum process via Twitter, saying TransLink needs to “clean up its own house before taxing us.”

Loo later clarified, saying she would still, reluctantly, vote to accept the tax, granted the money must be raised to pay for initiatives she supports.

Councillors Ken Johnston and Linda McPhail said they would support the proposal as well, despite running recent election campaigns to lower taxes.

“If we don’t say ‘yes’ we’ll be hung out to dry. My view is we should vote ‘yes’ because there’s no other plan,” said Johnston.

McPhail was also critical of the process. Asked if it is incumbent upon the city to inform the public about the “no” side, such as Bateman’s website, city spokesperson Ted Townsend said the city participated on the Mayor’s Council in the development of the tax proposal via Brodie’s participation, “and our communications to date reflect that.”

Brodie confirmed there was no vote from city council to direct staff

to communicate partisan information.

He said he would not oppose the city informing the public about the “no” campaign.

In fact, Brodie is — as an individual member on council — promoting an open discussion on the referendum.

“The whole referendum process can and should be criticized. It’s an abdication of the provincial government’s responsibilities and TransLink has made many mistakes in the past. They’ve been criticized, sometimes fairly, sometimes not,” said Brodie.

But when it comes to voting, Brodie believes a “yes” vote would benefit the region.

“I’m convinced these improvements are necessary. They’re critical for the environment, they’re critical for moving people around.”

Should the referendum pass, during the next 10 years Richmond would stand to gain increased bus services, including a B-line to Metrotown, as well as more capacity on the Canada Line.

The Richmond Chamber of Commerce has stated it supports the tax.

The dog walker whose animals in her care died in the back of a pick-up truck in Richmond last summer will have to wait until next week to hear if she’ll go to jail or not.

The Crown is seeking jail time and a fine for Emma Paulsen, who left six dogs to die of heat exhaustion in a hot truck outside Costco on Bridgeport Road last May and then tried to cover up the deaths by saying they had been stolen.

Crown counsel Jim MacAulay wants Paulsen sentenced three to six months consecutively for public mischief and cruelty to animals charges and fined $5,000-$10,000.

However, as everyone concerned awaits Paulsen’s fate, Richmond News readers chimed in on Facebook as to whether Paulsen will actually see the inside of a jail cell.

“I hope she gets the maximum sentence. She killed a family member…,” said David Fex, on Facebook.

On the same platform, Shirley Ryan said, “Throw the book at her....she deserves a long time in jail!”

And Tyler M. Lovdahl added, “Hope she gets jail time, but she won’t.”

During the sentencing hearing Wednesday in Surrey, the court heard how the six dogs — one of them, Oscar, was adopted out of the Richmond Animal Protection Society — suffered greatly before dying in the dog walker’s truck.

After leading the dog owners, pet detectives and members of the public to believe the dogs had actually been stolen from her truck while at a dog park in Langley, Paulsen broke down shortly after and admitted the dogs had died and she’d dumped them in a ditch in Abbotsford.

The Crown is also seeking a lifetime ban on owning animals and 10-year ban on caring for anyone’s animal.

“Ms. Paulsen was warned numerous times not to do what she did,” MacAulay told the court. “In addition, she’s a professional, she’s been hired to look after the animals.”

He suggested that jail time would send a message of deterence out to others.

Ritz: Winery paves way Terminal impact feared Philip Raphael

Canada’s agricultural minister uncorked a bottle full of praise Wednesday for a Richmond winery, calling the business one of the standard bearers for Canadian exports to China.

Gerry Ritz got a personal, guided tour of Lulu Island Winery in east Richmond Wednesday morning from owner John Chang and said that while some food exporters have already gained a foothold in the massive Chinese marketplace, more work needs to be done to assist companies such as Chang’s to increase their exposure overseas.

“We want to make sure John has the ability to market into that area, and that our taxation and regulatory packages at the federal level are conducive to him for growing his business,” said Ritz who called Lulu Island a world class facility.

Ritz added that one of the reasons why Canadian products do well in markets such as China is this country’s reputation as a trusted supplier of quality goods, including wine.

Chang, who started Lulu Island Winery in 2009 said around 80 per cent of his production — made from grapes grown on 10 acres behind the winery, and another 100 acres in the Okanagan — is sent to China.

“John has been saying his export footprint is a tenth of one per cent,” Ritz said. “So, there’s lots of room to grow when it comes to the development of wine (exports).”

“The middle class in China is some 400 million and growing at the rate of our (Canadian) whole population every year,” Ritz said. “So, rather than have access to 20 million wine drinkers in Canada, John’s got access to 300 or 400 million in China — huge numbers.”

Helping pave that route to the market are companies such as Chang’s, Ritz said.

“They act very much as an ambassador,” he said. “And John has worked very hard to gain that place in the Chinese market. So, anyone who wants to begin (exporting to China) should come to John and send a day talking about what they need to do.”

If the Roberts Bank terminal is doubled in size, Port Metro Vancouver does not want the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to consider the impact of road and rail traffic and pollution beyond its property line.

That has the City of Richmond and Corporation of Delta crying foul as they want the agency to include the aggravating factors — the impact on truck traffic, First Nations land, farms and air quality — of the terminal on the region, as a whole.

Richmond City Council will write a letter of support to Delta, which is asking the agency to reconsider the port’s

stance. Delta claims not doing so could set a precedent for federal environmental assessments on future projects, including, potentially, ones in Richmond.

“Clearly, a development of this magnitude will have significant impacts on local and regional road and rail networks, and there will be marine impacts beyond the terminal berths,” wrote Delta’s mayor Lois Jackson to the City of Richmond.

Jackson said her “number one concern” for Delta was traffic and wanted “inland ports” to be considered an option to Roberts Bank Terminal II, which would see annual container capacity double from 2.4 to 4.8 million containers.

Chinese landmarks sought Do you know of a historically significant place in Richmond connected to the Chinese community?

If the answer is yes, the B.C. government wants to know so it can be formally recognized for its heritage value.

The province is seeking nominations from the public of historic places with significance to B.C.’s Chinese community that reflect the development and history of B.C., according to Richmond Centre MLA and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism Teresa Wat.

Approximately 10 of the nominated historic places will be officially recognized by the government and placed on the BC Register of Historic Places and the Canadian Register of Historic Places.

The project is the result and inspiration of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Consultations, where many participants advocated the preservation of Chinese Canadian cultural history. Anyone can submit their nomination through the Heritage BC website at: heritagebc.ca.

The deeadline for nominations is Feb. 20.

Tourism spending boon Alan Campbell

Listening was not always one of Marilyn Wilson’s strengths.

By her own admission, she loved to immerse herself and fully engage in the conversation — especially when people were spilling out their life stories.

However, lending one’s ear to the golden nuggets of information dropping onto her recordings from more than a decade of interviewing an array of human beings is now a finely tuned skill that writer and soon-to-be author Wilson can claim as her own.

For 10 years, Wilson has been getting under the covers of people’s lives, telling their stories, both uplifting and tragic, for publications, both local and international.

And now, with more than 150 interviews behind her, the longtime Richmond resident decided to pool all her best work and launch her debut book — Life Outside the Box. But it wasn’t always easy getting the right information from the right people for the selftaught writer.

“Everyone has something unique about their lives to share and if you go into an interview with a set of questions, you don’t find that uniqueness,” said Wilson, a mother of three adult children, who was a Broadmoor resident since 1984 before moving to London Landing in Steveston last year.

“I’ll ask people a few basic questions to get the conversation going and then, after that, it’s all about letting that conversation flow and develop and letting them share their stories.

“I get lessons in life every single time I do these interviews and that’s where I find that individuality and uniqueness.

“The challenge for me, in the beginning, was trying to be quiet during interviews and letting people talk.”

It all started more than 10 years ago when she began to search on Craigslist for writing work, attempting to follow through on a passion for people and an urge to tell their stories.

After a few forays for various small publications, Wilson learned early on to record all her interviews, because she got, “so wrapped up in people’s life stories that I sometimes don’t hear everything they’re telling me.

“And it’s when I listen back to the conversation that I realize how many layers there are to that person.

“The gift I think I have is truly enjoying telling that person’s story.”

Oil prices have plummeted, the Loonie continues to tumble and the Bank of Canada cut interest rates for the first time in four years.

It’s all doom and gloom then, right?

Not here in Richmond, anyway, where one shining light is the very distinct possibility of more tourism dollars flooding into and being spent in the city, in particular

by U.S. citizens on vacation.

Richmond relies heavily on tourism and often feels the effects of the strengths and weaknesses of the Canadian economy’s peaks and troughs.

Many local businesses, which export their products to the U.S., are expected to reap the benefits of the falling Loonie over the next few months.

But it’s in tourism that the impact is forecasted to be even more immediate as American travelers arrive with increased spending power due to the exchange rate.

“In the short term, (the effect) is going to come primarily from the spending from the U.S. visitors, who are already booked to arrive here,” said Tourism Richmond’s CEO Tracy Lakeman, who cited a recent VISA Canada study, which showed Richmond among the top 10 cities in the country

where U.S. travelers spent the most money.

(Richmond was ninth, Vancouver was second).

“It’s harder to say what the longer term effect might be; people are making their travel plans right about now.

“We’re planning for around five per cent growth and it will be interesting to see if that increases.”

The mainstays of the industry, such as hotels, restaurants and attractions are likely to feel a direct benefit from the changing economy, added Lakeman, highlighting research Tourism Richmond conducted two years ago in the Seattle area, which showed the city’s affordability, accessibility and Asian culture as the three main reasons for coming here.

The Loonie lost a near half-cent to the U.S. dollar Thursday morning, closing at 80.62 cents, the lowest since April 2009.

The price of oil has fallen by 55 per cent since last June, and investments in oil and gas are expected to drop another 30 per cent.

Gas prices at the pump have fallen steadily over the last couple of months and are hovering in Richmond around the onebuck per litre mark.

British Columbians should brace themselves for more rising prices for fresh fruits and vegetables imported from the U.S.

Missing 89-year-old drove to Kamloops

A missing 89-year-old Richmond woman has been found safe and well — in Kamloops.

Evelyn Logan, who suffers from a mild form of dementia, appears to have driven in confusion on Monday afternoon all the way to the Interior.

She had been thought to be going to a

nearby IGA store at Garden City and Blundell roads.

Richmond Mounties alerted the public on Tuesday, asking them to keep an eye out for the senior, who had been known to randomly drive long distances in the past.

Late Tuesday evening, however, the RCMP announced Logan had been found in Kamloops and that her family was en route to meet her.

Income gap threatens all

A

s the world’s elite gathered in Switzerland this week to talk about economic matters, the charity Oxfam released a report highlighting how the rich are getting richer while the poor continue to have less.

According to that report, the richest 80 people in the world now have the same wealth as the bottom 3.5 billion people.

And that gap is widening, rather than narrowing.

By next year, it is estimated the richest one per cent will own more than the poorest 99 per cent

combined.

This bodes ill, and not just in a moral sense, the charity warned. It also threatens functional political systems and economic growth.

While the disparities in the report are more glaringly apparent in developing areas of the globe, North America shows ample evidence of the trend.

Extreme wealth is a force that attracts more money to itself by its sheer gravitational pull, aided by a combination of crony capitalism, social Darwinism and trickle-down economic theory. Not to mention naked

self-interest.

Gradually, however, those at the top of the food chain are waking up to the fact a consumer society in which large numbers of people are not benefiting, buying or buying in is inherently unstable.

Startling acts of altruism and philanthropy aside, governments remain the primary means of income redistribution in most societies. Clearly, they must do a better job.

Otherwise, as the toe of the mountain is worn away, those at the top will also have a long, long way to tumble.

The man of independent mind He looks and laughs at a’ that.

Robbie Burns called my ancestor Birkie, and said he strutted and stared and was a dolt. Moreover, despite his decorations, an independent man would laugh at him.

Well, that wasn’t nice.

In my teens, I was told of my connection to the Maxwells through my father’s side of the family, and I loved to hear about it.

My cousin was a gamekeeper on the estate and took me around to see the property.

He regaled me with stories that I thought were a bit far-fetched. However, research proved their truth, and I have been hooked on family history ever since.

I now have a picture of a pretentious ancestor who lived a few centuries ago, across many generations and from the other side of this ever-shrinking world.

A belated thanks to Robbie Burns.

Water under a bridge ‘Red Nose’ a win-win Dear Editor, Re: “Riverdale clear of confusion.”

Letters Jan. 16 For several weeks now there has been a discussion in the newspaper whether or not to re-name the No. 2 Rd. Bridge.

I would like to remind everyone that there was a public process in the very early 1990s to name the newly built structure.

There were numerous suggestions at the time (mine was Dover Crossing), but the overwhelming majority of people voted

for No. 2 Rd. Bridge.

Unimaginative, maybe, but it was a majority vote.

I attended the naming ceremony under Mayor Greg Halsey Brandt, and still own a commemorative coffee mug from this event with the City of Richmond’s logo and a depiction of the bridge on it.

The people have spoken. Case closed.

Let it be.

Dear Editor, A common daytime sight on the road these days is cars without their tail lights on.

It’s very dangerous when visibility is bad.

The drivers don’t realize that the lights aren’t on, so I’m wondering if you can put this message on the front page so everyone can see it — it may save lives: “This has to do with daytime driving.

Even if your vehicle’s headlights come

on automatically when the ignition is turned on, there’s a good chance that your tail lights don’t.

Dear Editor, Since my departure for the Cariboo was delayed, I took the opportunity of volunteering for Operation Red Nose (O.R.N.) one last time.

My goal was to drive my escort vehicle and beat my mileage from previous years of 1,000 km per year. Regrettably, an injury prevented me from achieving that goal, but I did drive four nights for a total of 750 km.

And every kilometer and every night was pure fun! I encourage your readers to get on board next season.

More importantly, if the entire Richmond/ Delta/New Westminster/Surrey operation prevented even a single motor vehicle accident caused by an impaired driver, like the one which disabled me in 1997, it was worthwhile.

O.R.N. would have saved all your readers millions of dollars in wasted medical costs, emergency responder costs, policing costs, insurance costs, and legal costs, never mind the ripple effect on our communities of lost careers, grieving families, destroyed businesses and the employment those businesses create, the impact on surviving children which spreads out to impact education services, medical services, voluntary participation, the list is infinite.

Readers who have not experienced a serious motor vehicle accident themselves would

be shocked to learn how much just one such accident affects them as citizens, community members, and taxpayers.

So, a big thank you to Carlene Lewall and her remarkable team at Delta Gymnastics for hosting the O.R.N. I drove for.

Their many business and private sponsors, the Delta Police, and the dozens of volunteers who drove, dispatched, and provided food and coffee until 3 a.m. every night/morning, especially my team members Don, David, Jared, Pam, Irene and Len. Thank you to all the clients who did the right thing and chose to use O.R.N. services, and for the donations they made, which supports youth gymnastics.

Residents rally as break-ins spike A break-down in communication between Richmond neighbours is helping criminals Graeme Wood

A

recent spike in property crime in an otherwise relatively safe neighbourhood has residents trying to revive a waning Block Watch program. But shifting demographics may pose challenges to its revival.

Craigflower Drive, off Francis Road, is ground zero for Richmond’s 28 per cent increase in residential break-and-enter crimes in 2014, compared to 2013.

The 18 property crimes committed in Ken Frail and Graham Boyle’s Seafair neighbourhood over the last two months sparked the friends to organize a town hall meeting Tuesday evening at city hall.

“We want to see the (Block Watch) program developed and change the effectiveness of communication,” said Frail, a retired Vancouver Police inspector.

Broken gates, creepy footprints in backyards, tampered locks and smashed car windows has “put the community on edge,” Frail told the Richmond News.

In fact, Richmond RCMP has indicated a male suspect is living in the area; the problem has been finding solid evidence to charge him, despite all the bike patrols, plain-clothed officer surveillance and bait cars.

At the meeting, Frail told an audience of close to 200 people there were “a lot of people not signed up for Block Watch. There were people who were absolutely unaware that break-ins were going on.”

Finding out that most of his neighbourhood is without a Block Watch captain, Boyle felt it was necessary to publicize the angst.

“It’s about being aware. (Block Watch) has worked well up until recently and now I think we’re strained and don’t know where to look for resources,” said Boyle.

Crime up in 2014

2014 marked a five-year high for residential breakins in Richmond — by Dec. 1 there were 824 cases, putting the city on pace for 893 for the year.

Per capita, Richmond is better situated than Surrey (2,604 total, estimated) and about on par with Vancouver (2,273 total). But Richmond lags behind Delta, which has half of its population but incurred

just 238 break-ins by last December (about half the rate, per capita, of Richmond).

In 2010, when Richmond saw a low of 573 residential break-ins, it ranked six percentage points below the national average (for all breakins, including businesses).

And while Richmond has seen low rates of auto thefts and thefts from auto, those two figures spiked 50 and 46 per cent, respectively in 2014 over 2013 (to December).

Block Watch is a volunteer-driven crime prevention program, common throughout North America under different names.

Frail fears without a revived Block Watch program, the city may never get back to those rates again.

“We have to ‘target harden’ and really get the crime (level) back to where it was before, which is way down.”

Prevention is possible According to city data, 87 per cent of 2014 breakins occurred in non-Block Watch neighbourhoods.

There are an estimated 400 Block Watches in Richmond, according to the city. However, according to Richmond RCMP’s Block Watch coordinator, there’s no way to tell how many more are needed, as blocks can vary in size and the city hasn’t compiled estimates. Ergo, it’s difficult to understand how effective the program is or how it can be made more effective, other than noting many more are needed.

Frail is now installing a hunting camera in his backyard — it snaps pictures in the dark when motion is detected.

A myriad of crime prevention tips can be found on the city and RCMP websites: utilize locks, don’t keep garage openers in street-parked cars, protect valuables and don’t announce vacations other than to trusted friends who can collect mail.

Frail’s also telling people to lock up ladders, utilize time-activated outdoor lighting, install alarm systems and trim hedges.

Simon Fraser University criminologist Graham Farrell says crime prevention isn’t “rocket science.”

But it also takes all the villagers to secure the village; a critical component of Block Watch is engagement and communication.

“We’d like to encourage discussion to make sure block watches are effective,” said Boyle.

Farrell said block watches are more likely in affluent communities. Surrey, with a population 2.5 times greater than Richmond only has about 650 watches. Sea Island, Seafair and Steveston are Richmond’s wealthiest neighbourhoods (total average income), while City Centre is its poorest. see CULTURE page 11

Culture: Could be barrier to reporting crime Immigrant factor

Frail raises the point that new immigrants may be on the outside looking in.

“We have people coming from other places now.

We have communities that aren’t talking. This (program) isn’t in Mandarin or Cantonese and we’re saying, why not?”

At the meeting the language issue was raised twice, including by businesswoman Wendy Yuan, a recent break-in victim.

Yuan said simple language barriers and cultural misunderstandings have meant the Chinese community is less likely to report crime.

“I ask them (immigrants) why they don’t report and it’s because they have difficulty speaking English,” said Yuan.

Yuan added that in Chinese culture, it’s believed losing something may bring subsequent “protection” in life; she said she knows of people who leave cash in lobbies.

“I honestly believe there are so many new immigrants…and it feeds into these crimes, because (criminals) know they won’t report it,” said Yuan.

Attending the meeting was Coun. Chak Au. “We (Chinese) have a saying that when you die, you don’t want to go to hell, and when you’re alive, you don’t want to go to the police station,” said Au, who added there’s a public perception that the RCMP don’t take reports seriously .

The RCMP noted there are interpretive services for 9-1-1, but also said immigrants often don’t call police because they think it costs money.

Sgt. Nicole Noonan of Richmond RCMP noted multicultural outreach has been a high priority for police, and when she canvasses neighbourhoods, she has Chinese information cards available.

Report, report, report!

Reporting crimes and suspicious behaviour is paramount for solving crimes, especially when dealing with a prolific, serial burglar, said Noonan.

“Any detail helps,” she said.

For instance, a simple ring of the doorbell but no one being at the door when it’s answered could be a burglar scouting your home, said Noonan.

And it’s not just immigrants who are failing to report suspicious behaviour, said Frail.

“We haven’t been phoning it in, and if we don’t phone it in, it doesn’t help as far as anyone doing an analysis of stats to know we have a problem,” he said.

In 2013, Richmond RCMP launched an online crime reporting website for offenses under $5,000. And, when a crime is reported, it’s shown on an online crime map at richmond.ca, indicating trends by date and location.

Noonan said in order to assist the forensic team, try not to touch a crime scene after reporting it.

Start talking As for crime prevention, cameras and locks help, but nothing beats neighbourly interactions — something that’s at an all-time low, according to many residents and stakeholders.

Coun. Ken Johnston attended the meeting and told the News he is “guilty” of not speaking to his neighbours.

Johnston said he noticed a neighbour installing a home security system without speaking to him first about crime in the area.

Johnston and Au promised a safety advisory committee and town hall safety meetings during the election, although none are scheduled.

Meanwhile, online engagement is an option. In Burkeville, Ingrid Trouw organized a 200-plus member Facebook group that shares details about suspicious activity. It also serves as a way to meet new neighbours.

“Everyone has been really appreciative of information sharing, especially suspicious activity,” said Trouw, a Burkevillian since 1991.

The neighbourhood is in flux, she noted; older residents are becoming empty nesters so they’re less likely to chat with neighbours at local schools and parks.

Getting to the roots of kiwifruit’s past

L

ast week, as part of the B.C. School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program (BCSFVNP), Matthew McNair secondary school’s culinary arts kitchen received a delivery of kiwifruit.

Staff and students alike were surprised to discover that this fruit, originally cultivated in China and brought to New Zealand in the 20th century where they were first commercially planted, is also grown right here in B.C. New Zealanders coined the fruit with the name “Chinese gooseberry” and when it was eventually exported to California, the fuzzy fruit was rebranded with the name “kiwifruit” because of its resemblance to New Zealand’s kiwi bird.

George Petkov, B.C. kiwifruit grower, owns an eight-acre vineyard called Petkov Kiwi Production on the rolling hills of the picturesque Mt. Lehman area of Abbotsford in the Fraser Valley.

The farm is called a vineyard because like grapes, kiwifruit grow on woody vines that are supported by trellises or pergolas.

The area is ideal for this crop because of the clean, fresh air; fertile and nutrient-rich soil; warm summer climate; and moderate winter climate.

FoodMatters Dora Ho Chef kiwifruit because this exotic fruit is one of the healthiest fruits on the planet — packed with fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, magnesium, lutein, potassium, and antioxidants that protect against free radicals.

His family liked the idea of growing a fresh, healthy, pesticide-free fruit that could be a popular locally grown option for consumers during the time of year when most fresh fruit is imported.

Kiwifruit do not ripen on the vines, but in cold storage, so they can be kept for up to six months. Therefore, when local availability of most healthy fruit is sparse and costly, Petkov’s supply of kiwifruit is at its peak of freshness and ready for local distribution.

Petkov began his kiwifruit production in 2008 and has been seeing continual increases every year. In fact, in 2013, he harvested 48 metric tons of kiwifruit and about 75 in 2014, which totals more than 700,000 kiwis. Petkov is still not at full production and estimates that once he reaches that, he should yield between 90 to 100 metric tons. About 10 per cent of of

In the words of Grade 11 McNair student Josephine Bell, “I had no idea that this exotic fruit is grown in B.C. It’s fantastic that kiwis are grown locally. Thank you for contributing the kiwis to my school.”

Yield: six servings Ingredients: 5 large eggs 2/3 cup sugar 2/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 3/4 cup whipping cream 6 kiwifruit Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, sugar & lemon juice until blended.

Pour into small heavy-bottomed non-reactive saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly with a silicon spatula until thick, about eight minutes.

2. Strain mixture through a sieve into a clean bowl by shaking the mixture gently. Any coagulated egg should be left in the sieve. Place plastic wrap directly on the surface of the mixture and refrigerate until cold, about one hour.

3. In a medium bowl, whip the cream until soft peaks form and fold into the cold lemon mousse. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

4. Just before serving, peel and slice kiwifruit. Divide kiwifruit among the bottoms of six bowls (preferably glass ones, so that you can see the fruit & mousse) and spoon the mousse over the top.

Serve immediately.

Meanwhile, Boyd was victorious on the girls side as the Trojans slipped past McRoberts 44-40 in an overtime thriller. Clarke named to roster for new training centre Richmond product following her older siblings who have gone on to play professionally and at the NCAA Division One level

Following the impressive path of her older siblings, Richmond soccer standout Ebony Clarke has been named to the inaugural roster for Western Canada’s first Regional Excel Centre (REX).

Already a member of the Whitecaps FC Elite’s part-time roster, Clarke was one of several players from the B.C. Premier Soccer League named to the program — joining five other full-time Whitecaps Elite players.

The 14-year-old midfielder came through the Richmond Girls Soccer Association, playing for her father Clive Clarke, and had a leading roll in helping the Richmond All-Stars capture the Provincial “A” Cup at the U13 level. She has since being playing in the BCPSL with Surrey United. Her older brother Caleb has been with the Whitecaps

for a number of years and recently signed a contract extension with the MLS team. Her sister Summer is a sophomore at Louisiana State University where she earned a fulltime scholarship after graduating from the Whitecaps Girls Elite program.

As part of the Canada Soccer Pathway, Whitecaps FC Girls Elite has merged with the REX program in Vancouver to maintain a standardized national curriculum for female players U13 to U18, feeding into Canada Soccer’s Women’s National EXCEL Program.

The National EXCEL Program is a six-year structure for developing female players U14 to U20 who demonstrate the highest level of ability in preparation for their contribution to Canada’s Women’s National Team. The program is built on four pillars of

development – physical, technical/tactical, mental, and social/emotional.

The REX program will be led by Whitecaps Elite Girls head coach Jesse Symons with support from his own staff and BC Soccer.

“This is a very talented group of young players that we’ve assembled for our inaugural REX roster,” said Symons. “We’re very excited to work with each of these players as they continue to develop along the Canada Soccer Pathway.”

Full-time players from the Whitecaps Girls Elite team joining the REX program include: defenders Simmrin Dhaliwal (Mountain United FC) and Olivia Sheppard (Coastal FC); midfielders Jenna Baxter (Surrey United SC) and Rachel Jones (Mountain United FC), and midfielder/striker Ashley Burgess

Richmond works overtime to win tourney Richmond Minor’s Midget C2 hockey team had a golden finish to 2014, capturing its division at the association’s own Bantam Midget C Tournament.

Playing eight games in three days, the team’s stellar defence allowed just six goals through tournament play, achieving four shutouts along the way. The locals outplayed and outscored through opponents, entering their third game of the day with an unbeaten record.

The boys were exhausted but held the lead until Seattle managed to tie the game with just 4.4 seconds remaining. Heading into overtime, the fans were on the edge of their seats but the

team kept its cool as third-year assistant captain Matthew Wong buried the winning goal off a shot by Midget age rookie Marcus Parmar in the opening 90 seconds. It was a well-deserved win for a very hard-working team.

here are some Jaguar fans, myself included, who winced at the shift in the design theme when the venerable XJ sedan took on a more contemporary shape a few years back.

Gone were the trademark “eyebrows” that accentuated the distinctive, bold cluster of four headlights.

Absent, too, was the seeming acres of sheet metal covering the trunk lid.

In place was a sleeker, futuristic cat with an almost generic profile that mirrored other premium priced models.

But now that the new XJ has had a few years to grow on me, the shape has become more pleasing to the eye — even distinctive when you glance at one passing you on the highway, or prowling the city streets in search of a parking valet at a notable hotel or restaurant.

And the 2015 edition displays that upmarket aura well, especially from the rear, to me, the most noticeable view the XJ offers with its distinctive C-pillar which
