Next stop: Steveston’s washrooms Bus operator forced to rent auto parts premises for drivers’ loo Alan Campbell

The need to comply with a WorkSafeBC washroom rule for its bus drivers has forced TransLink to sublet a former auto parts business in Steveston.

For years, drivers of the busy 410 route (a three-hour round trip between Richmond and New Westminster) that starts and terminates in the village have been using local businesses’ facilities, such as Subway on Chatham Street, which were paid a fee by TransLink to allow its employees washroom access.

But it’s understood that agreement has been canned (it’s not clear by which party). The public transit operator — having kicked the tires on renting a washroom

trailer and placing it in the parking lot on Chatham — has now signed a deal to sublet the near-2,000 square feet former Lordco office at 3740 Chatham, next door to Subway, which has been closed for around two months.

TransLink’s manager of media relations, Cheryl Ziola, told the News on Thursday that a sublease has been signed with Lordco until the end of August for a “discounted” $3,612 per month.

“Unless we find another (washroom) solution, we will be looking into taking on a new, five-year lease at the premises after August,” said Ziola, who couldn’t reveal due to “commercial sensitivity” how much TransLink was paying Subway previously.

“One of the issues we had with the previous arrangement was that

local businesses in Steveston tend to close at around 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., so our options were limited.

“We looked at renting a washroom trailer and placing it on the parking lot near the terminus, but it was $6,000 per month alone to rent the trailer and it was doubtful we’d be getting permission from the city or the parking lot owner anyway.”

With 410 buses filing through the Steveston terminus every five-six minutes in peak mornings, Ziola cited WorkSafeBC rules regarding employees access to washrooms as the need to set up a more permanent rest-stop for its drivers.

WorkSafeBC states that washroom access needs to be within 200 feet of the stop and, if there are more than nine employees, there needs to be at least one male

UBCM trade show to be held during Yom Kippur Philip Raphael

Steveston’s Ben Baker knows exactly where he will be on Sept. 22 and 23 — at his local synagogue observing Yom Kippur, one of the holiest events on the Jewish calendar.

And while he’s fine with that, he’s upset the dates fall on one of the potentially busiest opportunities for his marketing firm — the trade show attached to the UBCM (Union of B.C. Municipalities) convention at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre.

“No one would ever think of scheduling a trade show on Christmas Day or even Dec. 24,” said Baker, president of CMYK Solutions, which counts a variety of government organizations as clients.

And losing out on the opportunity to have in-person contact with those types of decision-makers at the UBCM trade show is like bypassing roughly $10,000 to $20,000 in business, he said.

“Is that guaranteed business? No, but it represents a significant opportunity I am missing,” Baker said. “It’s the chance to recement relationships with current clients and establish new ones.”

All it would have taken to avoid the conflict in dates would have been a quick consultation of a religious calendar, he added.

“But they didn’t, and now I will not be going and I won’t be sending any employees,” Baker said, adding he not only feels for his business, but also others of the Jewish faith who would be compelled to attend the trade

“Will my speaking out about this change the dates? No,” Baker said. “I just wanted the organizers to understand what they have done.”

When contacted, officials organizing the UBCM said this is the first time someone interested in attending the trade show has raised the issue of Yom Kippur falling within the trade show dates.

“As I understand it, Yom Kippur runs from the evening of Tuesday Sept. 22 to the evening of Sept. 23,” said Paul Taylor, director of communications for UBCM via email.

“Our tradeshow is open Sept. 23 until and Sept. 24. Local government offices (as well as provincial and federal offices) generally do not close for this day in the religious calendar, so it is a regular business day for our membership and a regular business day for UBCM.”

Driving with dementia: Family matters Alan Campbell

She drove all the way from Richmond to Kamloops, sparking a major police and public search in the process.

The 89-year-old woman, who suffered from only mild dementia and was known to drive long distances without asking for help, eventually turned up safe and sound.

However, the News looked into how many drivers with dementia are on the road in B.C. and no authority was able to come up with a figure.

Neither ICBC nor the provincial government’s RoadSafetyBC or the Alzheimer Society of B.C. was able to provide any details.

And when you learn that 60 per cent of dementia sufferers in B.C. are living “normal” lives in the community and many of them are able to get behind the wheel of a car, safety flags are inevitably raised.

Just how many are among the 5,400 plus drivers re-examined for medical reasons by ICBC — at the behest of RoadSafetyBC — in the last 10 years is also unknown.

What is known is that most, if not all, of the responsibility for making sure dementia sufferers are fit to be on the road lies with the people around them, whether that be family members, friends or their own doctor — who are asked to notify RoadSafetyBC if they feel the person in question is a risk.

And knowing what that denial of independence can do to a loved one makes filing that report all the tougher for anyone living close to someone with dementia.

“It is difficult to provide precise numbers of people with dementia in the province who drive,” said Barbara Lindsay, advocacy and education director at the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “However, everyone with a diagnosis of dementia must stop driving

That decision, however, is not always taken voluntarily — for obvious reasons. In such circumstances, relatives or friends are advised by the society to look out for problematic driving patterns, traffic tickets (for going too slowly, too quickly, improper turns, failing to stop), crashes, fender benders or near-misses, as well as instances where the driver has been lost.

When seniors hit 80, they have to take a medical exam every two years. But before that milestone, and in between each 80 and over medical exam, it’s still incumbent on relatives and friends to monitor dementia sufferers’ driving abilities. ! Full story at Richmond-News.com

It wasn’t clear how much the rent of the former Lordco building might jump to from its discounted rate, should TransLink decide to sign a new fiveyear lease come Sept. 1.

“All we need there is washroom access,” added Ziola.

“So, the plan, should a new lease be signed (in the fall), would be to sublet the entire premises while maintaining washroom access for our employees.”

Due to the fact it’s only washroom access that’s needed, Ziola said there are no plans to put any new furniture or any other home comforts in the building, which has recently been redecorated and had a new heating system installed by current tenants Lordco.

The subletting from Lordco is, said Ziola, the first time TransLink has entered into commercial leasing agreement.

“We just got the keys to the building, so I’m not sure when we’ll be moving in,” she added.

Other TransLink driver rest-stops have simple fixtures and fittings, such as a table, chairs and a microwave.

Water boys’ chilli challenge Alan Campbell

You can make the chilli as hot as you want — because Kyle Allesia and Mike Deane have plenty of water to extinguish the flames.

For almost four months, Allesia, of Richmond, and Deane, of Surrey, have restricted their liquid intake to simple H2O in a bid to raise $50,000 for charity Water Aid Canada.

So far, with 265 days still to go of their “404waternotfound” challenge, a series of small fundraising events has pulled in $2,200.

This Saturday, the pair is hosting a local chilli cook-off at the Cambie Community Hall, with some tasty prizes for those hoping to wow the members of the public judging each crock-pot entry.

“We have a few entries already, but we’d love to see a few more,” said Allesia, who said he’s lost at least 12 pounds since limiting himself to drinking only water since last fall.

“We have some pretty nice prizes for the winners. There’s a Whitecaps prize pack for first place, which includes match tickets, hats, t-shirts, then there’s a grocery basket for second and Tim Hortons cards after that.”

Allesia said they’ll be raising money through a $5 donation for tasting and testing the chillis, followed by your vote, and there will also be an opportunity for contestants to “buy” votes of their own.

“I have a few friends in the craft brewing business, so that stretch was tough,” he said.

The News reported last November how Allesia and Deane wanted to mark their 30th birthdays in October and November 2014 respectively, by doing something everyone would remember and help a good cause in the process.

The chilli cook-off runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Budget keeps status quo

F

or the third time in three years, the province (arguably) boasts a balanced or surplus budget.

As expected, there’s give and take in all directions.

Monthly MSP premiums are going up for the sixth time in five years. At the same time, a higher tax on those making more than $150,000 per year is being rolled back to 2013 levels. Families on disability or income assistance will no longer have their payments clawed back, if they received child support.

(However, it should be noted that ending the

clawback for single parents on income assistance translates into a $13 million loss in tax revenue. While reducing taxes for the top two percent of income earners will mean there’s $227 million less in government coffers.)

And though the total dollar amount going into health and education is going up, we can say right now that in 2015/2016 both sectors will continue to feel the strain as demand on the system grows.

But our current government did not campaign and win on making sure it met the needs of every disadvantaged group, or that every public service was funded to the liking of its staff.

All in all, it’s a status quo budget, which is good for those benefiting from the growing disparity between rich and poor. Perhaps not so great for the rest of us.

resolve its internal dynamics.

Contributing to the lower temperature at the B.C. legislature these days is the looming federal election. It’s not until the fall, but its presence is already starting to hover over the provincial scene.

The BC NDP, because of its direct ties to the federal party, will naturally become more distracted as the federal campaign draws nearer. Two members of its caucus — MLAs Jenny Kwan and Mable Elmore — are about to fight it out in a nomination for a federal riding, and that will likely cause some tension.

In the meantime, the provincial political scene is off to a quiet start in 2015, and there’s not much to suggest things are going to really heat up for a while yet.

Still, even when a government is content to travel along on cruise-control, something can come out of nowhere to force it to make a sudden, sharp turn along the way. There’s nothing in sight right now, but the year is early.

MP is campaigning on my dime Dear Editor, My Chinese wife and Canadian citizen received a greeting card with “Lunar New Year” greetings from a Progressive Conservative MP. The card had a picture on its face page of the M.P. in an attractive Chinese dress. Inside, under a Dominion of Canada symbol, were greetings for a “Happy New Year” in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese (I’m guessing that one!) and English, in that order. No French.

The envelope had a Richmond return address on it and, where a stamp is normally placed, were the words, “FROM MP, POSTAGE FREE,” obviously made by a rubber stamp which anyone could have made.

We also receive her free newsletter from time to time, delivered by Canada Post, extolling things she and her government have done on behalf of Canadian citizens, particularly seniors.

One cannot help thinking that the purpose of both the card and newsletters is primarily to “campaign” for re-election, presumably at taxpayers’ expense.

It makes me wonder what other MPs are doing and whether Elections Canada and the Auditor General should be looking at all current MP practices, regardless of their party affiliation.

Flag stirs conflict within Dear Editor, I have disavowed the act of exercising strong nationalisms and patriotisms, or flogging the esteem of any in-group identities. From habitual stigmatisms, cultural and socio-economic assumptions, to violent eruptions of elitism, I have regarded the strong projection of associative identities to be divisive.

Yet, I have also caught myself fiercely proud of being Canadian, without being able to distill as to why. The passage of National Flag Day represented an opportune time for me to reflect on my sin.

Space, place and identity have been the foundations of purpose in the lives of humans since we transitioned from hunter-gatherers to settler-farmers, and began building social and economic links leading to the creation of institutions of governance and order.

With that, came the need to protect and to project force, and create social rallying points to successfully propel commercial and technological innovation.

Fast forward to the present, and we are presented with an iteration of our world that is much more interconnected, but still experiences mortal conflicts, trade-disputes, atavistic politicking, and disparate interests.

But what makes this version different is that it has Canada.

Canada allows citizens to retain their identities with pride (should they choose), affording them dignity and encouraging all Canadians of varying backgrounds to accept the identities of others, rather than polarize them by cornering segments of society into defensive stances.

This is sustained because of who we are: immigrants who have freely chosen to be Canadian and call this place home by putting our trust in, and participating in, its institutions.

I stated that I have long disavowed allowing myself to live under the shadow of any in-group identities, choosing rather to follow my own moral code.

I do not retain any ancestral identities in the traditional sense, but see myself as who I have decided to be.

This, at first, seemed to cause a conflict.

But now I realize that it is exactly this freedom to be the final arbiter of my own identity that makes me so proud to be Canadian.

It’s because Canada accepts the idea of me that I have accepted the idea of Canada.

I

t’s believed that one in five Canadians is bothered by it every day. It causes emotional, social and financial burden. It’s costing the nation tens of billions of dollars each year. And, it’s resulted in Canada being the second largest per-capita consumer of prescription opioids (hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, codeine) in the world, according to the International Narcotics Control Board.

“It” is chronic pain; a wide-ranging disorder caused by various factors that experts in the field say is grossly underfunded and barely recognized by the Canadian medical system.

And without a change in how pain is managed, the disorder is only going to get worse as Canada’s population ages; roughly two in three seniors suffer from chronic pain.

But how to heal or at least manage pain is a multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary approach that needs to be done on an individual basis. It requires commitment from the pain sufferer and an openminded community of health practitioners.

Dave Thomson, an education coordinator for the Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD), is on the frontlines of pain management in Richmond.

Thomson, 48, has fibromyalgia, a disorder that causes body pain and usually results in chronic fatigue syndrome.

“Sleep is the big thing. I don’t get much sleep. It’s clicking years off my life, I’m certain of that. I get about four hours of sleep in total,” said Thomson, who is presently running disease self-management courses at RCD, an organization that operates largely thanks to community grants and volunteers.

Thomson has, through the years, developed coping mechanisms for his pain. While he used to take several Tylenol and codeine pills daily, he is now weaning off a less powerful morphine patch.

“I can sleep in pain, I can dream in pain, I can fall asleep in a position that no one would dare consider because my brain will process the pain and not wake me up,” said Thomson, almost with a chuckle.

Costs to society One of the province’s leading researchers of chronic pain, Dr. Marc White of the University of British Columbia, defines pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.

“Chronic pain covers a great realm,” said White, who was a postdoctoral fellow at the Arthritis

“The problem the Canadian health care system has is, if you don’t have an extended health care plan, drugs are really the only method of pain relief that physicians are able to provide you with,” he said.

As such, opioid use in Canada has more than doubled since 2000, medical research indicates. According to Industry Canada, from 2001 to 2013, total pharmaceutical sales nearly doubled to $22 billion per year. And while there are no national data trends, Global News, citing Ontario Coroner data, reported opioid related deaths had tripled from 2002 to 2013.

Some health experts have reportedly called for a national strategy on prescription medication abuse. White said he wants to see a national strategy for pain management, as well.

White doesn’t dismiss the need for medications. Rather, he sees pharmacists as a vital process to pain management, especially in ensuring safe drug interactions and preventing abuse.

B.C.’s Medical Services Plan does not insure costs for the likes of psychologists, counsellors, physical or massage therapists, acupuncturists and natural healers, all of which cost at least $100 per session.

Vancouver Coastal Health has an insured pain clinic at St.Paul’s Hospital, but the wait time is approximately one year.

Massage therapy is one of the most popular methods of pain relief utilized by those with medical insurance.

Physical therapies, according to Michael Henniger, a registered massage therapist at Steveston’s Turning Point Wellness Centre, have the advantage of treating the root medical cause of the pain as opposed to pharmaceutical interventions that simply mask it.

“Massage therapy has many different benefits, both physical and mental. It helps with posture, muscle imbalances, tension, range of

But he also acknowledged that whatever method one chooses, it has to be the right one for the individual.

“I find that a lot people view their pain as part of life. It’s just something they deal with on a day-to-day basis. What they need to learn is that there are many ways to help manage that pain. Getting the right treatments can help alleviate the pain and in some case remove it all together,” he said. Even if you can’t afford frequent visits, a massage therapist can educate you on home pain relief and prevention methods, such as a stretching routine.

Sedentary life a culprit

Henniger said it’s our ever-increasing “sedentary lifestyles” that have contributed to the chronic pain epidemic.

“Driving, sitting at a desk, watching television on the couch; all these things are detrimental to the body and over time can lead to chronic pain,” he said.

The rush of day-to-day life is also having well-documented adverse affects on people’s mental health. So, healing the mind may be just as important as healing the body. Depression and anxiety is “part and parcel with a lot of this stuff,” said Thomson.

Natural healing and self-awareness exercises are other healing methods that are becoming increasingly mainstream as society becomes more aware of the harmful effects of overusing medications.

Natural healer Sudha Devi practices various methods of healing such as mainstream Western-Eastern practices, which includes breathing therapy and yoga, as well as more traditional Eastern practices such as Marma therapy and Jin Shin Jyutsu, both of which involve opening energy channels in the body through the application of slight pressure on control points of the body.

Devi uses such Eastern practices and Western scientific research to heal the mind and body. She conducts one-on-one treatments from her home office in Steveston and late last year she established the Richmond People in Pain Network Support Group that meets monthly at the Richmond Caring Place Society.

For Devi, also a sufferer of fibromyalgia, managing chronic pain is a deep, emotional, individual experience. But it need not be a lonely one, which is typically the case.

“No one knows your pain,” she said.

“When we start talking, there is a diagnostic process which we start.

One level is pain but the other levels are mental and emotional,” she said. “When you start sharing (your experience) something happens because you know someone else feels like you do. They’re not judging you. And at our meetings you can lie down if you want, because we know how you may be feeling.”

Devi said when a person is injured, say in a car accident, energy pathways can be blocked. By taking daily moments for the likes of yoga or breathing exercises, or simply just channeling positive thoughts while resting, she believes people can at least come to terms with their pain. This can also help stop the vicious cycle of pain and depression, she said.

And when that happens, other healing methods such as drugs or overt physical treatments can become more effective.

“Self healing is not a quick fix …you will still have anxiety but it won’t stop you from participating in things,” she said.

White says natural healing methods are not new but our understanding of how they may affect chronic pain is. ‘What is new is research using brain scans and a new understanding of the neuroplasticity and how pain gets modulated through different ways,” said White.

Essentially, scientists are discovering the interplay between emotions and the brain’s chemistry that affects pain receptors.

Thomson, White and Devi noted that there’s another important aspect to pain management — family support. UBC Associate Professor of Psychology Susan Holtzman studies pain and families.

She said loved ones often under or over estimate others’ pain, which can lead to ignorance of the issue or smothering and a resultant lack of independence for the patient.

So, be careful, White warned. “Sometimes one can get over treated,” he said.

And, noted Thomson: “You don’t want to go crazy. You don’t want to go to the other edge. If you go on the Internet you can be smothered with information.”

lthough Valentine’s Day was a week ago, you can still celebrate with your significant other with today’s romantic reds. Our first treat is a tasty bubbly with lots of class and taste, and it’s affordable. The Segura Viudas Rosado Brut Cava ($16.99) lives up to its name, Rosado, which means rosé.

One of the new style of Portuguese reds, the Rayeo tastes like a blend of an old fashioned red with a fruitier New World style. That’s a result of Syrah mixed with two of Portugal’s varieties that most of us have never heard of before!

Aged in French oak, it has dark fruits, leather, black pepper, and cocoa on the nose. Expect a tasty smooth red with cherries and a hint of chocolate on the lingering finish. It was superb with a Portuguese stew I made with chorizo, clams, and chicken broth along with a splash of

the wine.

Another big surprise was the recent introduction of the Monasterio 2005 Gran Reserva to government stores. Where else can you find a ten-year-old wine for $19.99, but on Spanish shelves? And what’s amazing is that the Monasterio is still ruby red, indicating it can still improve with more age.

I’ve been a huge fan for its little brother, the Monasterio 2006 Reserva ($14.99). Both wines are a blend of Spain’s famous Tempranillo grapes, blended with the Garnacha and Carinena. The difference is that the 2005 is made from older, 40 to 50 year vines from more premium sites and receives more aging in French and American oak and in the bottle.

I am seduced by the rich deep scents of dark fruits, cloves, and forest floor, the needles and the earth. In the mouth you will savour the elegant rich plum, dried cherries, leather and salami.

There are layers of bouquet and flavour here to enjoy with a rack of lamb or Manchego cheese.

The Valentine cards are now gathering dust, but the romantic reds live on!

The 19-year-old McMath grad was stocking shelves in the soft drink aisle of his Seafair neighbourhood Safeway, where he’s worked for close to three years, when he noticed a contest ad label on a bottle of Dr. Pepper.

It was for a “One-of-aKind” Canadians who could receive a $20,000 grant if the one-minute video they produced and submitted explained why and how they wanted to pursue further education was chosen by a judging panel. There were a total of five winners chosen from across the country.

Alexander took up the challenge and had a friend shoot the footage of him driving around Richmond explaining how he’d like to continue his pursuit of becoming a police officer.

“I’ve wanted to pursue policing for a while because I like helping people. And that’s one of the best jobs you can have to do that,” he said.

“Winning $20,000 to go towards tuition is pretty awesome.,” he said. “It was hard to believe, at first. Now I don’t have to worry about the money when I’m going to school.”

Discount airline ready for takeoff New, YVR-based, ultra low-cost, carrier aims to repatriate Canadian air travellers Philip Raphael

A group including some seasoned, Canadian airline executives are hoping rock bottom airfares offered by a new, YVRbased carrier will help stem the flow of air travellers catching flights south of the border.

David Solloway, who spent four decades with the likes of Canadian Pacific Airlines, Canadian Airlines and United Airlines is part of the team — which includes former Canadian Airlines International executive Sid Fattedad — getting Jetlines clear and ready for takeoff this summer as the country’s first Ultra Low Cost Carrier (ULCC).

Solloway, Jetlines’ president, chief commercial officer and director, said the business plan is to run the operation very much in the same way Easyjet, Allegiant Air and Ryanair do, where passengers pay a low David Solloway price for their seat, and then add on fees for other services, such as baggage and seat assignments.

“The model, of buying a ‘seat and a seatbelt’ and only paying for goods and services each passenger may choose individually, is known all over the world and is the fastest growing segment in the airline industry,” he said recently in an email interview from Toronto.

Trouble is, a lot of that passenger growth, when it came to Canadian travellers, meant traffic streaming across the border to airports.

“According to the Canadian Airports Council, in 2012 almost five million Canadians travelled to the USA to take advantage of ultra low airfares,” Solloway said.

Photo submitted At Bellingham International Airport — a 72 km drive south of Richmond — Canadians made up 67 per cent of air traffic on ultra low cost carrier Allegiant Airlines in 2013, as they headed for destinations such as Las Vegas, Hawaii and Arizona.

By initially offering flights across western Canada, then sun-spot destinations in the U.S. and Mexico, Solloway said Jetlines is hoping to offer not only competitive prices, but the convenience of travelling through YVR on one of its 148-seat Boeing 737-300 aircraft it plans to begin operating this summer.

Plans are to have a single aircraft type fleet of 16 Boeing aircraft in about 36 months after start-up. Plus Jetlines made an announcement recently with Boeing to order up to 21, 737-Max aircraft for deliveries starting in 2021.

In terms of a boost to the local economy, having a new airline based at YVR means more local jobs.

Jetlines anticipates hiring 65 employees for each aircraft it flies out of the main terminal.

It’s a $50 million investment Solloway and his fellow Jetlines executives and investors hope will pay off big time.

Marketing expert and SFU professor Lindsay Meredith said it’s a business idea that has a good chance of taking off, likely without the need of having to undercut those low-cost carriers south of the line to attract attention.

The big selling point will be a simple one — convenience.

“This is not moonshot stuff,” Meredith said. “Nobody wants to go through that border hassle. Nobody wants to put those extra miles on a car, or stay overnight in a hotel so they can jump on the next flight in the morning.

“So, in a case like this, you don’t even have to match their prices, you just have to get in the ballpark.”

Holloway said Jetlines is planning to be 30 to 40 per cent lower than the current lowest airfares in the Canadian market.

Blueberry celebration Chinese New Year celebrations go much further than red envelopes crammed with lucky money, a countdown at midnight and a fabulous feast at a Richmond blueberry farm.

Canada Berries Enterprises has organized an event that is a festival that includes agricultural products (fruit wines, ice wine and other blueberry products), food exhibits, a traditional craft show and a fireworks display.

All of the activities during “Chinese New Year Miaohui” take place at 12791 Blundell Rd. on Feb. 20 - 22. Opening ceremonies are set for Friday starting at 2 p.m., and activities run until 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the events run from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The art of finding the finest of fairs Netherlands plays host to the world’s top art fair John Masters

The Landau Fine Art shop has the perfect location for a commercial art gallery: the corner of Champs Élysées and Madison Avenue. This ideal juncture — where taste and marketing meet — really does exist, but for just 11 days each year.

The rest of the year Landau Fine Art is on Sherbrooke Street West in Montreal. But for almost two weeks annually, in the middle of March, some 90 of its finest pieces are on display at the European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) in Maastricht.

TEFAF is the world’s most important annual art fair. About 275 art dealers from 20 countries bring a selection of their stock and set up shop on “streets” with names like Sunset Boulevard, the Faubourg Saint-Honoré and the Königsallee.

It’s a mall where you can wander past Rembrandts and Monets, ancient Greek statues and modern Italian jewellery, a silver soup tureen owned by Russia’s Catherine the Great and a prayer book made for Charles V. For art lovers it’s a supercharged day of gallery-going, from Old Masters to contemporary art, from furniture to

photography.

The fair attracts the world’s richest and most serious art collectors. More than 200 institutions send representatives with their cheque books, and the local airport can have as many as 170 private jets waiting for the return of their owners with the latest treasures.

This crème-de-la-crème of the art world has its own Vernissage, or preview day (and some 10,000 of them show up for it), but after that the fair’s next 10 days are open to the public.

(The 2015 dates are 13-22 March.)

You don’t have to buy anything, but if you think you’d like to become a collector at some point, or simply want the heady experience of wandering through an eye-popping Disneyland of fine art, this is the place.

Admission is €55 for a day, but a better deal is the passe-partout ticket for €115, good for all 10 days. Either comes with a copy of the fair’s catalogue, which will about double the weight of your carry-on bag. For an extra €5 there’s an hour-long orientation tour daily at noon, or the free Dealers’ Choice tour at 4:30 p.m., taking in five or six shops whose gallerists will expand on some of their items.

It’s not always the case, though. At Thomas Heneage Art Books, from London, I could have put down £70,000 for a volume of Max Beckmann etchings, but I also

found a book for £14.95.

Maastricht, two hours by train south of Amsterdam, is where the Dutch come to shop and eat when Paris is too much effort. It’s also the birthplace of the euro. What better place to spend a few?

COLTS PREVAIL IN PLAYOFF THRILLER Richmond High coach Jared Hulme and his players erupt as the buzzer sounds in the Colts thrilling 53-50 semifinal win over the Handsworth Royals on Wednesday night at the Vancouver and District Juvenile Boys Basketball Championships. The result not only sent the Colts to the final, it secured them a berth in the upcoming Grade 9 Boys Provincial Championships.

Wildcats, Marlins headed to final 4 at Oval Richmond teams advance with home court victories Wednesday night at the Lower Mainland AAA Championships as they look to battle their way back into contention for the four provincial berths up for grabs. The Sharks fell 83-65 to Tupper in another quarter-final game.

Meanwhile, a difficult road got even tougher for newly crowned city champion Richmond Colts in the AAAA Lower Mainland playoffs.

Their task was large enough to begin with in a zone that features five top 10 ranked teams and only three B.C. berths available.

Now, the Colts are having to play without leading scorer and first team city all-star Jon Mikhlin who broke his ankle last week in the Richmond championship game. The Grade 10 guard averaged over 27 points per game.

A pair of city schools have booked their tickets into next week’s Lower Mainland AAA Boys Basketball Championship semifinals at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The McMath Wildcats and McNair Marlins are now just a win away from advancing to to the provincial AAA tournament for the second straight year after posting home court quarter-final victories on Wednesday night.

The No. 3 seed Wildcats toppled city rival McRoberts 88-65 and will meet the No. 2 St. St. Thomas More Knights next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Marlins took care of Byrne Creek 83-60 to earn a semifinal match-up with No. 1 Charles Tupper.

That game tips off at 2:45 p.m.

McRoberts, Steveston-London and Hugh Boyd all have consolation games today

with a 65-62 loss to Killarney on Tuesday and face a must-win today against 10th ranked Kitsilano to keep their season alive.

The Cambie Crusaders are the No. 1 seed at the AA Lower Mainlands which start Monday at the Oval.

No. 3 RC Palmer Griffins and No. 5 MacNeill Ravens are also contention at the eight team tournament that will determine two B.C. berths. The final is slated for next Thursday at 8 p.m.

Despite just missing out on a berth into the city championships, the Richmond Christian Eagles have an excellent chance at advance to the A Provincial tourney for the first time in recent memory. They have been seeded No. 2 with the eight-team tournament also starting next Monday at the Olympic Oval.

Sockeyes host Steelers Saturday

Richmond Sockeyes and the Grandview Steelers continue their opening round playoff series on Saturday at Minoru Arenas.

Following game one on Thursday, Richmond and Grandview resume battle at 5:45 p.m. before the series shifts to the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The Sockeyes (32-100-2) were edged out for first place in the Tom Shaw Conference and best overall record in the league by the North Vancouver Wolf Pack
