Mayor Malcolm Brodie was joined by his Vancouver counterpart Mayor Gregor Robertson at Brighouse station in Richmond Wednesday morning to stake claims that a ‘Yes’ vote in the upcoming transit tax plebiscite will improve the economy as well as the environment and, notably, the money raised will be at arms-length of TransLink’s base budget.

They said congestion in the region costs the economy $1 billion annually when factoring in fuel costs and time lost sitting in traffic.

Brodie and Robertson are part of the Mayor’s Council, a group of Metro Vancouver mayors that is asking for a 0.5 per cent regional sales tax that should initially raise about $250 million each year for new transit infrastructure improvements.

On March 16, Metro residents will be mailed a ballot. One can mark down either ‘Yes’ to agree to the tax, or ‘No’ to prevent its implementation. Voters have until March 29 to mail in their ballots.

One of the problems for the mayors is the public perception of TransLink, the region’s transportation authority, which has been plagued by perceived unilateral decision making, overspending on executives and project cost overruns, such as the delayed

fare gates and transit card system (Compass).

While the new tax funds will go to infrastructure managed by TransLink, Brodie said the money will be audited annually at arms length.

“It’s absolutely critical to have a group that will monitor the money. …That’s what gives me confidence,” said Brodie, who called for a change in TransLink’s governance model (Brodie has stated the mayors need more control over regional transportation).

The mayors noted there are no plans to either increase or decrease the tax at a later date, but both options are theoretically possible.

Infrastructure projects funded by the new tax include a Broadway subway in Vancouver, light rail transit in Surrey, a replacement Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster and 11 new B-Line rapid bus routes in the region.

While TransLink handles existing ridership with its current base budget, Brodie said the new projects, funded by a new tax, are required to keep pace with growing transportation demands as the region’s population grows.

With the tax, bus service hours will grow two per cent annually. Without it or any other additional funding, hours would only increase 10 per cent in total by 2045.

The council claims the projects will create 7,000 jobs by 2030.

Gavin McGarrigle of Unifor said many trade unions are also backing the ‘Yes’ side.

When asked if the projects are guaranteed Brodie said they were “priorities.”

According to the website mayorscouncil. ca the priorities in Richmond “over the next decade” are 20 additional train cars and extended platforms for the Canada Line, and a Richmond to Metrotown B-Line bus.

The mayors’ plan also includes priorities such as 50 per cent more SeaBus service, 80 per cent more night bus service, 30 per cent more HandyDart service, Expo Line upgrades, more frequent peak-hour service

and 300 more kilometres of bike lanes.

The mayors claim that implementing the tax will have a $450 million impact on the economy, according to a study paid for by the Mayors’ Council and conducted by InterVistas Consulting.

“We need to help people, goods and services to move more easily throughout the Metro Vancouver region. Implementing transportation and road improvements will help us avoid traffic and economic gridlock as we enhance the environment,” said Brodie. ! Canada line workers settle

Police name victim Murder investigators have identified the body found Monday morning at a business on River Road.

Alex Renney, 20, of Surrey, was found dead about 6 a.m. by an employee arriving for work on River Road, between No. 6 and No. 7 roads.

According to the police’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), Renney was last seen Sunday night. Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, IHIT’s media relations officer, said investigators are still trying to narrow down the timeline of Renney’s last movements and who he was in contact with prior to his death. Unionized workers on the Canada Line ratified their new contract Tuesday that gives them a wage increase and pension plan.

The 150 or so staff, who belong to the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, voted

63 per cent in favour of the deal with Protrans BC which operates the line.

The new agreement, which came after workers in January voted 99 per cent in favour of job action, runs until Dec. 31, 2019. The wage increase is five per cent over the deal’s first four years, with the remaining two years tied to the same increase other SkyTrain workers receive,

which is yet to be determined.

The workers had been without a contract since December 2013.

“Our Canada Line members wanted to be included in the Public Service Pension Plan like all other workers on the SkyTrain system who do similar work,” said BCGEU President Stephanie Smith in a press release.

Refugee immigrants are reporting higher incomes to the Canada Revenue Agency than investor-class immigrants, according to data compiled by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Furthermore, the rate of investor immigrants reporting any income whatsoever is far below the Canadian average.

The findings, reported last week by Ian Young of the South China Post, may indicate the benefits of the investor-class program may not have proven dividends.

“The data that suggests many investor migrants tend to treat Canada as some kind of holiday resort or educational/retirement bolt hole, while doing business back ‘home’ is quite clear,” wrote Young on his website.

While the investor-class program was scrapped last year, a similar, smaller pilot program, the Immigrant Investor Venture Capital, was announced last December.

In the old program, more half of all investors chose B.C. as their destination in the late 2000s, with over 5,000 coming into the province annually, according to CIC. While there is no available regional data on where exactly the investors landed, Richmond saw 18,685 new immigrants from 2006 to 2011, according to National Household Survey data.

According to CIC, business immigrants have accounted for seven per cent of Canada’s total immigration since 1980 and in 2010 investor-class immigrants — who, as a condition for entrance, were required to prove net worth in the millions and invest $800,000 in Canada — accounted for 88 per cent of all

business immigrants.

According to CIC, investor immigrants reported average earnings of about $18,000 in their first year and just $28,000 after 15 years. After three years, only 47 per cent of such immigrants reported any income. The Canadian average is 67 per cent.

After five years, only 39 per cent reported income, suggesting investor immigrants leave the country (or declare non-residency) after the immigration process is complete.

Meanwhile, refugees (those who come to Canada under hardship) reported first-year incomes of $20,000 and after 15 years their average incomes rose to $30,000. Two-thirds of refugees reported income by their fifth year, on par with Canada’s average.

More troublesome for Young is that similar rates of income after 15 years are found with the spouses and children of the initial, principal applicant.

“It’s particularly worrisome considering that the biggest cohort (40 per cent) of dependents upon arrival is made up of children aged 10 to 19. These (children) would be 25-34 after 15 years, and should be earning good money. But they aren’t.”

As well, Young adds, “the same phenomenon of a decline in tax-reporting rates could be seen in spouses and children, suggesting some of them, too, head for the exits.”

“The issue is not with immigrants or immigration in general, it is with wealth migration schemes in particular. …Should Canada wait for the grandchildren of investor immigrants to join the workforce before seeing the supposed benefits of millionaire migration?” asked Young on his blog.

Racial tensions real: Chu Community activist Bill Chu, of the Canadians for Reconciliation Society, says all sides must come together in resolving race relation problems in Richmond and across the province.

“In Richmond there are still tensions between Chinese and non-Chinese, so it’s up to us to make things better. Both attitudes are not healthy for being neighbours, never mind nation building,” he said.

Richmond is currently embarking on a public consultation process to determine if non-English signs are a detriment to community harmony.

Last year, Chu was critical of the consultation process for the province’s apology to the Chinese community for historical wrongs dating back to the 1800s.

“Reconciliation always involves two parties. My group was fairly critical of the province not involving non-Chinese groups (in the Chinese apology process). There’s a need to open up the conversation by looking through history,” said Chu, who is a strong believer that everyone must recognize British Columbia’s Chinese history, especially in the formative years of the province.

That’s why on Monday, at a news conference held in Richmond, he warned that the provincial government needs to do more to protect historic sites related to

Chinese-Canadian history, including some in Richmond and a Chinese burial ground in Lillooet, which may soon be developed.

Chu’s concerns come after Richmond Centre MLA and Minister of Multiculturalism Teresa Wat announced, in January, a public program to nominate 10 historic places of significance to the Chinese community.

City puts brakes on possible congestion Richmond’s planning committee temporarily put the brakes on a planned industrial-business park at Riverport that would add more traffic to an already heavily congested area.

The planned 14-acre industrial park would be built on an existing paved lot once used to store new cars at No. 6 Road and Steveston Highway, across from the Silvercity theatres.

Councillors want city planners to examine more closely the traffic impact of such a facility. The only traffic improvements being proposed are to the front of the industrial park, which would consist of two buildings with loading bays in the middle and small retail outlets to the side with 400 parking stalls.

Budget bragging premature

s usual, what anybody has to say about the B.C. budget released this week will depend on what pulpit they’re preaching from.

The “right” is mostly expressing joy over the black ink on the bottom line, while the “left” points to social shortfalls created by special favours for the business community.

Business people are pleased by the surplus.

They see government debt as dollars that should be in people’s pockets, to be drawn from to spend on goods and

services and generally boost the economy.

People in the mining sector, eager to put the Mount Polley debacle behind them, are understandably happy that the Christy Clark government has found money to aid exploration and development, as well as extending their tax credits despite the surplus.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong claims the surplus gives B.C. “bragging rights” over the rest of Canada.

But conspicuously absent from this year’s bragging was the LNG windfall that was all over last year’s budget

and its expectations of future surpluses.

Instead, workers at ICBC and BC Hydro point out a direct link between surpluses projected for the next three years and the money that the government is planning to extract from those Crown corporations in each of those three years.

While low-income families get a boost from an increase in the tax threshold for the Early Childhood Tax Benefit, the hidden MSP tax rises again — the right hand giveth, and the left hand taketh away.

political parties is less enthusiastic about the transit plebiscite in Metro Vancouver.

But while the BC Liberals seem merely tepid in their support for the “Yes” side, it appears that the NDP is looking more and more like an undercover agent for the “No” side.

Using the high-profile daily question period as a launching pad, the NDP has fired salvos at TransLink on several occasions. The “No” side is trying to frame the plebiscite as a de facto referendum on TransLink itself, and the NDP’s actions have infuriated the “Yes” side, which sees them as assisting the “No” side’s messaging.

The “Yes” side, of course, is strongly supported by unions and environmental organizations, which the NDP has assumed are among its traditional areas of strength and which makes the NDP strategy that much more curious.

It’s a delicate balancing act, and one the party appears not to be performing very well.

Soccer club does it right The Editor, There are a lot of things wrong in youth sports, but there are a lot of things right.

Right now we are losing too many good coaches, referees, volunteers and kids in all youth sports because far too often the environment is toxic. Richmond is very fortunate to have individuals such as Nigel Shackles, Cody Kusch, Kathleen Wong, Terry Kehoe, Steve Smith, Carolyn Hart, David Weber and many more who work together heading up associations and clubs taking on legitimate challenges in youth sports, while ensuring that we all remain focused on developing people, and not just athletes.

These often forgotten individuals have put “PLAY” back in our sports.

I can think of no greater recent example then to thank our local football club, Richmond FC. Richmond Boys Soccer is run by some of the finest people I know and have ever encountered. Myself, I have walked the sidelines and dugouts of the Lower Mainland as both a professional and a volunteer coach for 27 years. But, on March 23, 2014 all my coaching came to an abrupt stop due to a diagnosis of cancer. This is when I learned what being a part of a club is truly about.

I was proud this past January to walk out on the pitch with the sun shining down, be greeted by so many supportive individuals that I am blessed to call my friends and my family.

I cannot thank these individuals enough or the leaders of so many other associations, for their outpouring of support, assistance and love during a difficult time and I want to remind all parents out there that your kid is all you’ve got — you can’t trade them in for a more talented athlete and they can’t exchange you for a different or more supportive parent.

We both only get one shot at this, make sure to provide your children and your whole family with a healthier, more positive and rewarding experience on and off the field.

Dear Editor, Re: “Next stop: Steveston’s washrooms,” News, Feb. 20.

TransLink needs to show more concern for the paying public who have no union to represent them. I am a regular user of the bus service between Steveston and Richmond Centre and I am appalled at TransLink’s behaviour

towards the paying public who use their services.

Steveston is the terminus for six major bus routes, yet TransLink cannot or will not provide a basic shelter for those passengers waiting on the north side of Chatham Street for the 410 and 407 buses heading north and east.

Often, there are buses parked along the curb when a 410 bus appears from the rear of the que and stops in the traffic lane while customers scramble to get on as traffic is being held up. The bus stop for buses 401, 402 and C93 on the south side of Chatham Street does have shelter and a bench.

The fact that TransLink can rent premium space for its employee’s comforts should be extended to their paying customers.

TransLink needs to show more concern and provide a portion of the space for the needs of customers who have the same needs as bus drivers. There is more than enough leased space to be shared. Unlike for drivers, there are no washroom facilities for customers at the 22nd Street SkyTrain station in New Westminster. This can result in a very painful ongoing situation for customers.

Weather is making farmer sweat Mild winter still two degrees Celsius below the record average Alan Campbell

ill Zylmans doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

In more than 40 years of farming in Richmond, Zylmans – whose strawberries are renowned for being among the best in the Lower Mainland – has never known his crop to be this far forward.

After the mildest winter he can recall, his 18 acres of strawberries at W&A Farms, off Westminster Highway and No. 7 Road, are, he said, at least three weeks ahead of schedule.

Zylmans has delved deep into his farmer’s “log” and he can’t find any reference in his personal history book to the crop flourishing this early.

One might be forgiven for thinking this would be good news for the likes of Zylmans and other berry farmers across Richmond. But the unseasonably warm winter is producing a bead or two of sweat on Zylmans’ brow.

“Everything is way ahead of where it should be,” said Zylmans, while inspecting his strawberry crop earlier this week.

“The strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, everything is coming along earlier than I’ve ever known. I keep notes in a kind of log from all my years in the business and I’ve never seen this before; I’ve never known the plants to be this far forward at this time of the year.

“However, the next two weeks are crunch time. If we get a real cold snap, which can happen at this time of the year, it could do some serious damage to the plants.”

Zylmans has been monitoring the weather forecast closely this week.

And, with Environment Canada predicting the mercury to dip below freezing on Saturday night, the Richmond farming veteran is crossing his fingers and toes the berry plants will survive into next week. “(This weekend) I think, that’s going to be the crucial point,” he told News, while surveying his acreage next to Lulu Island Winery.

“If any frost gets into the crown (of the strawberry plant), then it could be trouble, as the plant might not have enough time to recover for the spring.

“But, as I said, this is all new territory for me; I haven’t travelled down this path before.”

And even if his crop does make it through the weekend and dodges any other March temperature plunges, he’s not sure his customers are conditioned for a super early strawberry feast.

“May 20 is the earliest I’ve ever harvested,” said Zylmans about his 18 acres of u-pick and fresh-market strawberries.

“We could be well ahead of that this year, but it’s not necessarily a good thing; people are tuned in to doing certain things at certain times of the year. They might not be ready to pick strawberries at the beginning of May! June is strawberry season, right?”

PATIO SEASON IS ‘SNOW’ BOTHER Almost a year ago to the day, James Vernon was sweeping several inches of snow off his restaurant’s patio in Steveston.

This February, the only thing Vernon, floor manager at Sockeye City Grill at Fishermen’s Wharf on the Steveston waterfront, has been sweeping off the patio is satisfied customers, who’ve been soaking up the inclement sunshine.

“We’ve had to open up the patio several times in the last two weeks,” said a delighted Vernon.

“This very day last year (Feb. 24) we were covered in snow. But the last time I can recall it being anything like this was in 2010, the Olympic year, when we had the Dutch staff from Heineken House down in Steveston with their big Dutch bikes on the patio.

“That winter was kind of comparable, but maybe not quite as mild as this.”

Vernon said his staff has been laying out blankets on the patio chairs for those who need them, but “not too many have been using them.”

“The patio has been very popular and as soon as that sun comes out and people start sitting here, it seems to attract even more people to the restaurant.”

And when they’re out basking in the sun, “they feel like they’re in California,” joked Vernon with a smile.

Warm — but no record breaker This winter in Richmond may have been the mildest in living memory, according to farmer Bill Zylmans’ almanac.

But the temperature would have to explode off the weather charts in the last few days of February if it’s going to break any official records.

Matt MacDonald, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said the seasonal average for Richmond so far – for December, January and February – is looking like it’ll be at least two degrees Celsius shy of the warmest on record.

“We are not quite done yet with compiling the official average temperature at YVR over the winter,” said MacDonald. “But it’s certainly not been record-breaking in terms of the temperature, by any means.

“February has been very mild (in Richmond) with an average temperature of eight degrees (Celsius); the normal is 4.9.”

January’s average, said MacDonald, was 5.6; the norm is 4.1 and December`s average was 4.9; the norm being 3.6.

“If we add them all up, the average so far for this winter has been 6.2. The norm being 4.2,” he added.

“A full two degrees above normal is quite significant, but it’s still well short of the record average of 8.5.”

MacDonald said he expects (the 6.2 average right now) to rise a little after Environment Canada has recorded the last week of February. However,

as feared by the aforementioned Zylmans, Richmond is definitely in for some cooling temperatures this weekend.

“I expect it to drop below freezing, perhaps as low as minus three, maybe Saturday into Sunday or a little later,” said MacDonald. “It should gradually warm up again as next week moves on.”

The weather-maker that’s responsible for the distinct lack of cold and snow this winter being a “massive ridge of high pressure,” explained MacDonald, that’s dominated all the weather in the region and has pushed everything cold to the east.

“The precipitation is actually normal, but very little has fallen as snow,” he added.

“The snowpack is about 15 to 30 per cent of the normal and that will likely be an issue later on this year.

“This area relies heavily on the snow melt, so that is a concern for the seasons ahead.”

The small snow pack could lead to dangerously low water levels in rivers and streams etc, which, in turn, can mean higher water temperatures.

The higher temperatures can cause higher mortality among resident fish, or among young salmon rearing in creeks.

Plus, the province’s reservoirs rely partly on the snowpack, but Metro Vancouver said there is enough water supply at the moment and they don’t expect it to be a factor.

Bidding adieu to Steveston booster Philip Raphael

Steveston will be saying goodbye to one of its biggest boosters Saturday afternoon.

That’s when the family and friends will be remembering and celebrating the life of Bob Butterworth.

He passed away Feb. 17 and would have been 81 next month.

“Community came first for Bob. He will be sorely missed,” said Loren Slye who

served on a number of community boards with Butterworth over the years.

Butterworth became a fixture on the Steveston waterfront, running the Esso service facility on Bayview Street for 30 or so years.

Later in his career, he and his wife started up a Steveston-based business, Elves Embroidery.

Through it all, the community and its needs were a priority for Butterworth who was involved in keeping public access to the waterfront with a boardwalk, and

numerous other causes and organizations, from the Lions Club and Steveston Historical Society to the Rotary Club and Steveston Community Society.

“Bob was always a good natured character, with a smile on his face and one of his jokes at the ready,” Slye said.

“He was a good all-round guy who spent countless hours working for the betterment of Steveston.”

The service for Butterworth will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Richmond Funeral home (8420 Cambie Road).

As a clinical counsellor with more than two decades of experience, Danielle Aldcorn is attuned to examining issues and situations in great detail.

It’s an attribute that has helped fuel her other career as an author of “new adult” fiction with the release of her latest work — One Per Center.

Writing under the pen name D.R. Graham, One Per Center revolves around the life of an 18-year-old woman, Tienne Desrochers, who grew up amid the biker gang culture, that one per cent of the community which operates outside society’s laws. After the death of her father, who was a high-ranking club member, the young woman finds herself living with her aunt in a world far away from Harleys, leather riding vests and brushes with the law.

It’s a subject that fascinated and compelled Aldcorn to explore after seeing a TV news report one night a few years ago.

The news story focused on the funeral of an actual “one per center.” Police had set up an observation post near the funeral home to monitor the comings and goings of those attending.

“There were little kids who were there holding the hands of their burly, biker dude dads,” said Aldcorn, who also pens a Family Function column for the Richmond News. “It made me interested in what it would feel like to grow up as an innocent little kid in a world where those bikers — their family members — are people who the rest of society fear.”

To get a handle on that world, Aldcorn began reading almost every non-fiction book that exists on biker club culture.

by Entangled Publishing that she completed about three and a half years ago. They form the Noir et Bleu Motorcycle Club Series which was launched Monday (Feb. 23) with an online publication of One Per Center. The second book in the series — The Handler — is slated for release April 27.

“My personal branding, as an author, targets males and females, especially reluctant male readers.”

Capturing that latter segment is an important challenge for Aldcorn.“It’s like when young boys pick up The Outsiders for the first time. It’s probably one of the first books they read to the end,” she said. “That’s what I aspire towards. I like girls and women to read my books because of the romance, the love story. But I want boys to read it, too, because they will think it’s bad-assed.”

How do you escape the humdrum life on a chicory farm in 1955 rural Ontario and make a break for the bright lights of Hollywood?

Peggy Ann Douglas has a plan—and it revolves around ascending the tiers of “royalty” in the beauty pageant circuit.

That’s the premise behind the upcoming production Miss Caledonia at Gateway Theatre.

Second City performer and Canadian comedy award winner Melody A. Johnson takes to the stage solo to present a number of characters, bringing to life the struggles and

achievements earned through the challenges of baton twirling and singing.

Helping things along are the original fiddle music stylings of Mary Fay Coady.

Performing Miss Caledonia at Gateway marks the first stop for Johnson on her B.C. tour with the show she wrote. She is one of Toronto’s top comedic performers and Gateway’s artistic director, Jovanni Sy, is a big fan of her work.

In a recent promotional video for Miss Caledonia on Gateway’s web site, Sy said Johnson is an extraordinary artist.

“That’s one of the reasons I am so excited to have this show,” he said. “I’ve been a huge fan of hers since her days at the Second City. She does wonderful

comedy work and is a fantastic comedienne.”

Sy added he was amazed and inspired by her incredible versatility – whether it was a Second City revue, a new musical, or a classic drama, Johnson was always sure to be a highlight of the production.

“Miss Caledonia is Melody’s affectionate tribute to her mother that also happens to be a delightful showcase of her many talents,” Sy said. “She has toured this piece across Canada and we’re honoured to be presenting it here in Richmond.”

Final ‘Nite’ promises emotion Philip Raphael

As the saying goes “all good things come to an end.”

And judging by the support and impact the Nite of Hope Richmond breast cancer fundraiser has had over the years, when the stage lights dim for the last time there will likely not be a dry eye anywhere in the crowd at what is already an emotion-filled evening.

That’s the expectation organizers have for the 17th and final event April 16 at the River Rock Show Theatre which is also tinged with a bittersweet feeling.

“I said to one of our sponsors the other day that it’s going to be a fun night, and a powerful night. But when the curtain comes down, it’s also going to be a sad night,” said Peggy O’Brien, who along with Shelley Leonhardt is cochairing the final fundraiser.

O’Brien said it was a tough decision to call time on the event, adding she started the planning process with a heavy heart.

“We’ve had an amazing 17 years and raised a ton of money — about $2.4 million,” O’Brien said.

“And, at the end of the day it was about making a difference, and we did that.”

So, why was this year targeted as the last one?

“I think we are all just tired. Some of the executives on the board

have been involved for the full 17 years,” O’Brien said.

“And as much as we tried every year to recruit new people, it’s really hard to do. The event is so big, it can be intimidating and it’s hard to find people to take it on.”

“Like a lot of things, events do run their course,” Leonhardt added. “But what we have accomplished has been instrumental in making a difference in the Lower Mainland through the mammography hub at Richmond Hospital, as well as in the rest of B.C. and Yukon because the money we’ve raised has also gone into research.

“We feel very blessed to have been a part of that.”

Nite of Hope founder Judi MillerKnapp said she had mixed emotions about the event drawing to a close, but has not ruled out it making a comeback at a later date.

“There’s always that possibility,” MillerKnapp said. “We could be re-born again. But what we’re dealing with now is that this will be the finale, and the best ever. I have no doubt of that.

“There is still so much interest in attending an event called Nite of Hope.

And there are younger people on the committee who are keen to see it continue, but don’t have the skills or time to move it forward themselves,” MillerKnapp added. “But I would hope that within

a few years there will be a chance for it to re-engage.”

“I think it will come back looking different,” O’Brien said. “Maybe it will be a luncheon, something that’s a little more manageable — but still women supporting women.”

This year’s event will feature CTV News anchor Mi-Jung Lee who has

chronicled her own battle with breast cancer.

Musical guest will be recording star Melanie Dekker, who is penning a song especially for the Nite of Hope. And returning as emcee is CBC’s Fred Lee. For more information, tickets and sponsorship opportunities, visit niteofhope.com.

Bullish month ahead for Red Devils captain

I

n Miss Caledonia, Gateway Theatre’s upcoming Studio stage production, 15-year old protagonist Peggy Ann Douglas attempts to escape her small Canadian town in the 1950s by winning the local beauty pageant. Her plan is to win various small pageants, leading up to the Miss Canada pageant, and eventually leading up to Hollywood stardom. Sounds like a far-fetched idea, right?

In reality, many women from small Canadian towns in the 1950s chose to enter beauty pageants for this specific reason. In fact, Miss Caledonia is based on the real life story of playwright and performer Melody A. Johnson’s mother, who competed in pageants from a young age. According to Johnson, “…batons, sashes, trophies and pageant outfits remain a part of our lives today, each one a remembrance of a great period of celebration and excitement of what could be.”

Why were beauty pageants so popular amongst small town gals during this time period? There are several reasons, the first being that pageant culture was huge not only in Canada, but in the highly influential United States. At the time, Miss America was at the height of its popularity and the pageant itself had strong ties to Hollywood. In 1954, Hollywood royalty Grace Kelly served as one of the judges. Even in Canada, Miss Toronto and Miss Canada became instant stars, with the Miss Canada pageant more wellattended than some rock concerts. Young women yearning to leave their small towns wanted a taste of this glamourous lifestyle.

Another reason for the ascension of pageant culture was the changing role of women in North America.

Following World War Two, women now had alternatives outside that of wife and mother. Joining the workforce was a viable option for women, although the positions were still restricted based on gender norms of the time. However, the idea of an independent woman was becoming more widely circulated, with pageant queens epitomizing this independence. They earned money through their winnings and could funnel it towards their educations. Winning beauty queens also had the opportunity to travel outside of their towns to compete in bigger pageants.

The hopes and dreams of these young women is captured charmingly in Miss Caledonia, which plays in March at the Gateway Theatre. March is shaping up to be a busy month for Richmond Devils captain Alex Yallouz.

As one of the top scorers in the South Coast Female Hockey League, she is a good bet to be playing in next month’s all-star at the Richmond Ice Centre. Her team also happens to be hosting the provincial championships, slated for March 26-29.

Now, Yallouz will be putting her gloves and stick down to showcase her speed in the Red Bull Crash Ice Finals.

She outraced 19 other competitors to win the recent B.C. qualifier event at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The national finals will take place the second week of March in Edmonton where Yallouz will race against 14 other qualifiers. Her winning time is the second fastest across the country.

The event will be televised so keep an eye out for Yallouz ripping down the track!

Sockeyes battle back on the road The Richmond Sockeyes bolted down the hatches to climb back into their opening round Pacific Junior Hockey League playoff series against the Grandview Steelers.

After a pair of losses at Minoru Arenas, the Sockeyes posted back-to-back shutout victories on the road to pull even in the bestof-seven quarter-final series. Game five was scheduled for last night in Richmond before the teams return to the Burnaby Winter Club Sunday for a 4 p.m. start. If necessary, game seven is slated for Monday (7:30 p.m.) back at Minoru.

Kurt Russell turned in a couple of flawless performances, stopping 19 shots in the game three win and 25 on Wednesday night, including 16 in the final period.

Richmond dominated the opening frame

of game four, outshooting the Steelers 15-2 but the teams remained scoreless.

Brodie Crawford finally broke the deadlock midway through the third period.
