t always feels great when people respond directly to stories we’ve run in the paper.

That was no exception when I received a letter Monday in reference to the column I wrote last Friday about connecting with neighbours.

Dear Editor, Re: “Connect, it’s good for you – really,” column, Dec. 4.

Living in a Richmond cul-de-sac has given us the gift of community spirit at its best. It does take effort to step outside and connect with your neighbours, but we have taken that even further by adopting, creating a garden and caring for it in a traffic roundabout. While working in our flower bed, people driving around it, stop and thank us. Neighbours out walking stop and talk to us. We have met people of different ethnicities who, even though they may not speak English, thank us, enthusiastically. Be brave! Step out of your house and say “Hi.” — The Myron Court Gang Soon after receiving that short, but inspirational, letter, reporter Alan Campbell made his way down to visit “the gang” to see just how it was storming the ’hood with its friendly spirit (see page 16).

In part, what I love about this letter has to do with what I didn’t love about the ending of last week’s column. It’s easy to say, as I did, “let’s do it.” Let’s “create healthy, integrated communities.” But what exactly does that mean? What does that look like?

Well, it means planting petunias in a roundabout; it looks like ornaments hanging on a city-owned tree.

About 10 months ago, we tried to launch a regular feature called “Neighbourhood Watch.” The idea was to zoom in on small areas, maybe just a two-block radius, and describe life in that zone. The feature didn’t really take off. Actually, it devolved into a series of municipality stories — city officials talking about plans for one street or another.

The problem was, unlike today’s feature, the ideas weren’t generated by the neighbours themselves. It didn’t have that grassroots quality.

So, lesson learned, we want to try again.

But this time you need to tell us what community connection looks like in your neighbourhood. And we’re not looking for funding drives. Those are well and good, but our focus here is on the small, but profound, steps people take to connect to those with whom they share a street or two.

It may be through celebration or it may be through protest. If you don’t want fame in the Richmond News, that’s fine. Sharing stories is good, but so is sharing a smile. This isn’t just about generating stories for the paper. It’s about, as one gang member said, challenging ourselves to be brave and say “hi.”

The Normalization of Marijuana Use is Going to Cause More Motor Vehicle Accidents

n Canada we are hearing about pending legislation to legalize, for recreational use, the drug marijuana.

In the US, while marijuana remains prohibited under federal law, 23 states have eased access for medical use and four states plus Washington, DC. now allow recreational use.

Canadians recently elected a federal government committed in campaign promises, a mandate letter to the new Minister of Justice, and its first speech from the throne to creating “a federal-provincialterritorial process that will lead to the legalization and regulation of marijuana.”

The director of an organization called the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition apparently with some connection to Simon Fraser University’s Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addictions reportedly called this move to legalization “long overdue”. The assumption relied upon for this point of view is that the use of this drug is epidemic and legalization will create an opportunity for healthful regulations not available or effective when use of the substance is fully illegal. This suggestion attempts to invoke science but is really just a matter of opinion.

Proponents of legalization of the drug cite two positive expectations. The first is more and better research about the effect of marijuana use on physical and mental health, human cognitive development, motivation, and productivity. We should also come to better understand its medicinal properties, if any.

The second expected positive result is the measurable benefit from the de-stressing on law enforcement, the court system, and the corrections system. (Note: rescinding any criminal law will have this immediate effect.)

This being said, road safety concerns cry out for immediate focus on the big gaping hole in regulatory control, namely, what level of blood THC concentration-the psychoactive component in marijuana-renders a driver legally impaired.

According to the (US) National Institute on Drug Abuse we know: (1) Marijuana is the illicit drug most frequently found in drivers involved in crashes, including fatal ones.

(2) The risk of being involved in a crash roughly doubles after marijuana use.

(3) Crash-involved drivers with THC in their blood, particularly higher levels, are three to seven times more likely to be responsible for the crash than drivers who have not used drugs or alcohol.

(4) The risk associated with marijuana combined with alcohol appears to be greater than that for either by itself.

(5) Marijuana significantly impairs judgment, motor coordination, and reaction time, and studies have found a direct relationship between blood THC concentration and impaired driving ability.

Hound Labs, an Oakland, California company working with scientists from UC Berkeley, Vancouver-based Cannabix Technologies Inc., Colorado-based Lifeloc Technologies Inc., and a chemistry professor-PhD student duo at Washington State University are working at developing ‘an instant roadside marijuana breathalyzer’. Bu what will be the national measure of amount linked to impairment?

Despite this ‘unknown’, however, where marijuana has been legalized, certainty about driving impairment effect has prompted the states of Washington and Montana to set-at this point-an arbitrary limit of five nanograms of THC per millilitre of blood (ng/mL) and Pennsylvania a one ng/mL limit.

Write this down: Marijuana use is going to cause motor vehicle accidents the way alcohol used to cause motor vehicle accidents.

Dear Editor, Re: “Know your neighbour, stay healthy,” News, Dec. 4.

Richmond has been called Canada’s healthiest city, and many health indicators support this assessment.

The recent article “Know your neighbour, stay healthy,” allows us to reexamine the reasons for this description.

Richmond residents live on average four years longer than the rest of the country, have lower rates of obesity, drink and smoke less, while they are less likely to report having high stress levels to the rest of Metro Vancouver.

A recent survey suggested that Richmond residents don’t feel connected to their community.

Connectedness is an important factor on which the city does focus, not only in terms of health, but also in order to create a vibrant and livable city.

In order to strengthen our community, the city has been working hard with our partners to provide facilities and programs, and to support our organizations.

For example, we heard the residents of Richmond who said they needed accessible spaces to meet and socialize.

When the city built the new City Centre Community Centre, we created a community living room as a welcoming community space, where people can relax and share.

The city’s other community centres also provide similar community gathering spaces.

The recently-completed Terra Nova Play Environment provides an innova-

tive play area that attracts many families and community groups.

The new Minoru Complex, to be completed in 2017, will include a Seniors Centre complete with community gathering spaces.

The numerous events hosted by the city and its partners demonstrate the city’s commitment to creating social connection.

For example, the very successful Richmond World Festival, open and accessible to all, celebrates the diversity of our community.

Several city initiatives seek to engage newcomers in community life.

For instance, the city provides a multi-language Newcomers Guide as a comprehensive localized guide to settlement in Richmond, including how to access volunteer opportunities.

The city also works with immigrant-service agencies, such as SUCCESS,

Immigrant Services Society (ISS) and Richmond Multicultural Community Services to cross-promote programs and services while jointly working on community planning as well as arts and cultural initiatives.

Our city has a very diverse geographic area and population which can make the creation of social connections more challenging.

However, we will continue to encourage our residents to access our facilities, programs, and opportunities that are open to everyone.

The City of Richmond is committed to working with community organizations and stakeholders to improve the lives of Richmond residents.

By improving social connectedness, the city improves the overall health of the community.

Lights are out on Christmas Dear Editor, I am old enough to remember a time when at least 75 per cent or more of the houses in our neighbourhood put-up Christmas lights and neighbours would invite each other to parties and sometimes exchange gifts.

I took a walk through our neighbourhood streets last night and there was one stretch of almost three

blocks where there wasn’t a single strand of lights to be seen.

Seems the illuminating spirit of Christmases past is close to disappearing altogether from Richmond’s residential neighbourhoods, and the unlighted spirit of Christmas future is taking over.

This is just one example of many that give clear

evidence of how our culture is being negatively affected by the proliferation of these unoccupied mega houses, and for those who might not have a problem with being surrounded by empty, dark buildings.

I wish you a happy, albeit quiet, neighbourless, dissociated, and isolated holiday!

Will road signs soon be in Chinese?

Dear Editor, Re: “Phone line highlights fact some drivers might not read English,” News, Dec. 3.

It blows my mind that ICBC is spending $4.5 million on translation services for drivers who cannot speak English.

The rule should be, if you are not proficient in English, you cannot drive on B.C. roads.

The onus needs to be on wannabe drivers to have mastery of the language before they get to sit behind a steering wheel.

If you can’t pass an English proficiency test in B.C., you should not be driving on our roads.

How else will you read the road signs? Or are we going to just translate everything into Mandarin, Punjabi and Cantonese?

That’s not a viable solution.

Will Santa rescue Canada Post?

Dear Editor, I reside on Ackroyd Road in an apartment building whereby Canada Post has a master lock to release the mail boxes for delivery of mail.

All has been working fine, until recently.

The master lock is broken and Canada Post is responsible for repairing the lock.

It was their abuse that caused the problem in the first place.

Numerous calls have been made to Canada Post, which had left a notice stating that mail will not be delivered as their master lock is broken and therefore the mailboxes are not secure. Hence, there will be no mail delivery.

Numerous promises have been made

by Canada Post to repair the lock and recommence delivery but this has not happened.

Customer service is obviously not a priority for Canada Post, especially at this time of the year.

So, I wonder how long the residents of the 84 suites at 8700 Ackroyd Road will have to wait for delivery or maybe they think Santa will deliver!

We are all frustrated and annoyed at being treated this way by a crown corporation.

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter to inform people how wonderful the RCMP Property Crime unit is.

I don’t think enough thank-yous can even cover how much they helped us out with an ongoing issue we had on our street (Kingsley Crescent.)

Some people may be aware of the challenges we faced the past year from drug deals, stolen cars/property, fighting, dangerous dogs, drug addicts and overdoses.

The countless times the PCU came over to talk, protect and be our voice is beyond any job description.

The compassion and caring of Cpl. Lee and his team is bar none.

It’s because of them, and the close relationship we built, that the owner of a particular home decided to sell and move his “business dealings” and “tenants” elsewhere.

I am so thankful each and everyday for the amount of hard work those officers put in to help all our families, neighbours, and friends.

We will forever be grateful for having them on our side.

Stop the smell Open letter to Metro Vancouver (regional district), My family lived in Richmond for over 25 years and we have kept in touch with friends and neighbours.

In the last four years, the impact from this composting operation has impacted their lives and has bothered me when visiting them and driving north and south on Highway 99, pending wind direction.

The smell has progressively been getting worse, the history of this operator has been less than a good corporate citizen, the intensity of the odour has been relentless and needs to be controlled.

This facility cannot be allowed to continue polluting the air for the benefit of a large corporation that is not even a Canadian company.

I strongly disagree with Metro Vancouver allowing this company to continue to release air contaminants into our air shed.

This company should first and foremost have to reduce the amount of product coming to their facility, or purchase new technology that will contain these emissions.

If Metro Vancouver holds other air quality permit holders to a higher standard, then Harvest Power needs to follow with no special treatment.

arry Point Park enthusiasts may want to tip their hat to the memory of Doug Sandberg the next time they are out for a stroll.

The long time city councillor, who died Nov. 30 at age 67, was one of the leaders of a group in the mid-1970s that managed to keep the site free from development.

Current city councillor Harold Steves said he was friends with Sandberg before he became politically active — they used to hunt together on Sturgeon Banks — but it was the Garry Point issue that brought Sandberg into the political spotlight.

“A developer wanted to put big, sevenstorey buildings there and we fought against that,” Steves said, adding that, at the time, he was the sole voice on council opposing the plan.

“I needed some support to get these buildings stopped, and I got Doug to run for council. And it worked,” Steves said. “Doug was always very community-minded and was one of the few who had that vision for a park at Garry Point.”

While Steves and Sandberg both served on council they were also competitors when it came to the provincial arena for the NDP. “I think we both ran for the local nomination at one point,” Steves said. “I ended up beating Doug, and he then became my campaign manager.

“That’s just what friends do.”

Sandberg served on city council during two eras — from 1977-1981 and 1987-1996 when the elected officials were known as alderman.

“We came from different ends of the political spectrum, but we managed to work together to get things done that were for the best of the community,” said fellow alderman Kiichi Kumagai, adding he also remembers Sandberg as a staunch environmentalist.

“He was always straight forward, and I loved working with him because of that.”

Longtime city councillor Bill McNulty said he got to know Sandberg during his first term on council.

“He was a mentor to me in many ways. He kinda took me under his wing and showed me how things worked at the city,” McNulty said. “We may not have shared the same political views, but he was committed to his community and stood up for it.”

McNulty quipped that Sandberg also enjoyed “raw meat” when it came to spirited political discussions.

“He never did it with me, but he was not afraid to debate issues and eat others alive — sometimes even his own teammates.”

Sandberg graduated from high school in Vancouver (Sir Charles Tupper) and earned a B.Sc in biological sciences at SFU. He worked as an air pollution specialist in the B.C. government Environmental Laboratory starting in 1968, and later became a steward and local chairperson with the provincial executive of the B.C. Government Employees’ Union.

While on city council, Sandberg was a member of the Health and Environment Committee, Personnel Committee, and Parks and Recreation Commission.

Among the responsibilities he filled in the community, Sandberg was elected vice president of the Steveston Community Society, was a founding member of the Steveston Historical Society, and a steering committee member of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Historical Society.

“The recently finalized 2016 assessments are indicating significant increases from 2015,” said assessor Jason Grant, in an online

A

s many as 10 new religious institutions could be built in the near future along Richmond’s “Highway to Heaven,” a portion of No. 5 Road between Blundell Road and Steveston Highway.

As such, the City of Richmond is plotting to revise its No. 5 Road Backlands policy, which may include the construction of a farm access road adjacent to a proposed widening of Highway 99.

The city is proposing to entrench the backlands policy — which dictates that religious institutions on the Highway to Heaven must farm the back two-thirds of their properties — by making it an official bylaw under the Official Community Plan, according to a recent staff report.

The institutions must farm the land in order to receive tax exemptions. However, the report notes that farming activity on the majority of the properties has been limited. In many cases the backlands — which are protected by the Agricultural Land Reserve — are farmed intermittently or by inexperienced volunteers.

The city has never revoked the exemptions from any of the institutions for not fully complying with the policy.

As such, the city wants to establish a more robust “green zone” and become more proactive in ensuring the backlands are farmed to adequate standards.

The city is asking property owners to voluntarily donate their backlands to the city so that

it can be farmed (by the city or via an agreement between the city and a farmer).

If owners do not want to do that, the city is offering to come to an agreement whereby the owner or an outside farmer farms the land.

For instance, the report notes developers of the former Mylora West golf course site are proposing to build five separate community institutions (which is what the present zoning permits) along No. 5 and dedicate the backlands of the course to the city for it to farm.

Meanwhile, Lingyen Mountain Temple is proposing a revised expansion plan, which will include a farming plan of its own.

In order to create the more robust “green zone” the city is proposing to build a farm road along the eastern most-portion of the lots, right along Highway 99. But for this to happen, the city needs more details from the Ministry of Transportation regarding the widening of the highway.

According to the report, the ministry is looking to obtain up to 18 metres of land from the highway, westward, to expand lanes leading up to a proposed bridge at the George Massey Tunnel.

Last month, the city wrote to the ministry to voice its opposition to the highway widening plan.

The city will also clarify residential use along the Highway to Heaven.

Under the new bylaw the city would prohibit congregate care, senior housing and singlefamily homes, all of which have been proposed at some point in time by the institutions and/or property owners.

‘Sign cop’ can expect abuse Graeme Wood

he City of Richmond is headhunting for a new sign/business licence inspector to deal with Chinese-only signs and applicants best apply with a helmet and protective padding.

The full-time, one-year position, advertised online, has a long list of duties and skill requirements, however it’s the posted working conditions that may draw people’s attention and, perhaps, lead them to close the tab.

Those working conditions include: “Disagreeable situations, which include abuse, threats, rudeness and the risk of potential violence.”

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said the working conditions are in line with other job postings for bylaw enforcement and do not apply specifically to the new sign inspector.

Still, he noted that from “time to time” the potential for physical confrontations with bylaw inspectors is a reality.

“Since this is a new position, I cannot provide specifics regarding potential frequency of ‘physical harm,’” said Townsend.

After decades of Chinese-only signage and ads sprouting up in the city, a critical mass of residents protested, leading to a recent debate within the community and at Richmond city council as to whether or not such signs should be banned.

Earlier this year, council decided not to ban foreign-language signs. Instead, it chose to educate business owners to promote English on signs as a show of “community harmony.” Council also directed city staff to implement a recommended “clutter bylaw.”

It remains unclear what the clutter bylaw will entail, but it could address the likes of outdoor posters, flags and banners for advertising purposes — either with an outright ban or some form of regulation.

“Clutter is defined in many different ways in the jurisdictions that have such regulations. How we will specifically define what is and isn’t clutter is part of the work we’re going through now in drafting the bylaw.

It’s extremely complex as there’s so many different types of things that can be posted permanently or temporarily on a business storefront or window,” said Townsend, via email.

Townsend said the new position (a temporary one, approved by council for one year) will address the revised sign bylaw dealing with clutter and also provide educational

outreach.

As such, the city requires the applicant to speak fluent Chinese.

The position, which pays about $70,000, involves routinely visiting new and existing businesses and “encouraging” them to include English on their “business signage, advertisements and other forms of commercial communication.”

The applicant will also be expected to develop educational materials related to signage.

Meanwhile, community activist Kerry Starchuk, who spearheaded a petition to include English on business signs, said she questions whether any noticeable difference will occur with the clutter bylaw, which she said could be grandfathered in, creating a bureaucratic mess.

She said there are many other Chinese signs and advertisements out of the city’s control, such as Translink ads.

Furthermore, Starchuk, who feels Chinese-only signs are unharmonious, said she is hoping the city can address another potential problem regarding business signage.

Starchuk believes real estate agents are playing fast and loose with for-sale and open house signs on public property.

According to the sign bylaw, an open house is allowed one sign on a street corner, however some real estate companies are placing multiple signs of different real estate agents for one open house.

Cops bust north Richmond ‘chop shop’ Graeme Wood

n Monday, Richmond RCMP arrested a 32-year-old-woman, alleged to have been operating a chop shop in an industrial area of north Richmond.

A joint investigation by the Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit and the Vancouver Police Department Auto Crime Enforcement led to the

arrest.

Officers executed a search warrant on Monday afternoon in the 11000 block of River Road and found a dismantled Acura sedan, a Honda coupe and an assortment of auto parts.

“A chop shop, as it is commonly referred to, is a location used for stripping vehicles down to thpeir component parts. These parts may then be re-sold. Individuals that are associated to a chop shop may also be engaged in re-VINing the identification of a

stolen vehicle or badly damaged vehicle,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“This particular location appeared to specialize in Japanese vehicles and parts, but some domestic vehicle parts were also recovered,” added Hwang.

According to ICBC, on average, during the past five years, about 6,000 vehicles are stolen each year in the Lower Mainland, however the numbers have been declining year over year.

he proposed 2016 capital budget, tabled by city staff at a finance committee meeting Monday, is the lowest in four years, at $104 million. Funding for the projects will come from various sources, including: Reserves ($62 million); surplus ($12 million); development charges ($27 million); and external sources ($4 million).

Among the projects are: ! No. 2 Road widening - $7.3 million – Using a $3.5 million federal infrastructure grant, the city will add an additional turning lane, “where warranted,” between Steveston Highway and Dyke Road. A bike lane will also be installed. The Two Road makeover will be complete by the end of 2017. ! Dyke Road widening and Fraserwood Trail connection - $1 million – This project is aimed to alleviate some concerns from the newly formed Dyke Road Residents’ Association, which is concerned about McRae’s Environmental Services operating its worksyard across from the residential area.

Seven hundred metres of road will be widened and a multiuse path will be built for pedestrians and cyclists. ! Water main replacements – $11 million – Richmond can get soggy and various routine projects will help keep the city dry. ! Garden City Lands Phase 2 - $3.1 million – Work will commence on ensuring the bog’s water systems protect the bog ecosystem. Trees will be planted along the perimeter trail and a trail network and picnic areas will be created. ! Parkland acquisition - $8 million – This money may be used toward properties along the Fraser River’s Middle Arm, for a future park, however, according to parks manager Mike Redpath, the city is also in talks with the Richmond School District to purchase land that could be deemed as excess following school closures. ! Strategic land acquisition - $21 million – Land deals are made behind closed doors, however the city likely needs to purchase land for a new museum.

Steveston Harbour log debris removal - $30,000: Although the harbour is a federal responsibility and a poorly maintained sheer boom is contributing to debris entering the harbour, the city will spend its own money to protect its assets, namely a pier at the end of No. 2 Road. ! Richmond World Festival - $300,000: If approved, the second coming of the city-planned event will likely take place on Labour Day weekend. ! Heritage inventory - $150,000: The last time the city reviewed its heritage buildings was in 1989. This money will be used to determine what buildings should be protected. ! Update expired Community Wellness Strategy - $75,000: City staff will create a recreation and sport strategic plan to guide the planning and delivery of wellness, sport and recreation services. This will complement an updated wellness strategy. ! Richmond museum development plan - $200,000: Per council’s request, the city is exploring building a new museum. Council has recently had in-camera meetings on the issue, suggesting the city may be looking to purchase land for the facility.

Industrial land scarce: Port P

ort Metro Vancouver claims a new, selfcommissioned study indicates industrial land in the Lower Mainland will “likely be exhausted” within the next 10 years and it’s calling on provincial and regional leaders to “embrace a shared responsibility for managing the growth of Vancouver’s trade gateway.”

Via a news release, the port states that a study by Site Economics Inc., a real estate development consulting firm, indicates there is only roughly 1,000 acres of vacant industrial land available in the region.

The port claims it will need 1,500-3,000 more acres of such land in the next five to 10 years to meet demand.

“Without sufficient trade-enabling industrial land to meet growing demand, we risk

hitting an economic brick wall, with serious consequences for our quality of life here in the Lower Mainland,” said PMV President and CEO Robin Silvester.

The demand for Canadian trade is growing, and container traffic through the country’s Pacific Gateway is expected to nearly double over the next 15 years, the port claims.

The port and the City of Richmond are at a stand off over the port’s lack of commitment to keeping the 230-acre Gilmore Farms in east Richmond from being developed for port purposes.

Richmond and a majority of B.C. municipalities have called on the federal port to commit to not developing any provincially protected farmland.

Autism centre gets new funding T

hose living with autism spectrum disorder in B.C. will soon be getting more help and support, in part at a new Richmond facility, thanks to two major initiatives announced Monday (Dec. 7).

The first initiative is the Ready, Willing & Able program, which aims to help adults living with ASD find jobs and employment opportunities.

The program, funded by the federal government, will be delivered in B.C. by the Pacific Autism Family Centre Foundation in partnership with the Autism Society of B.C. The second initiative is a $150,000 dona-

tion from LifeLabs toward the construction of a clinic, located at the Goodlife Fitness Autism Family Hub on Sea Island.

Staffed by specially trained lab technicians, the clinic, overlooking the Middle Arm of the Fraser River, will be designed for people with ASD, who often have to be fully sedated during blood collection procedures, delaying their diagnosis and treatment.

Both programs will be delivered through the Pacific Autism Family Centre, a proposed centre of excellence for people with ASD and their families which is set to open in 2016.

clectic. That would be the best way to describe Jaelem Bhate’s musical tastes.

And when you hear the 22-year-old, UBC music student and jazz band leader talk about how he approaches music, it’s no wonder.

When the Hugh Boyd grad sat down with the News at the Ackroyd Starbucks location this week, he said there was always music in his family home.

“My mom would always be singing around the house,” he said. “For my dad it would be CBC, almost religiously classical music.

And my mom was a big rock and roll fan,” he said. “So, when I was younger, it would be Friday nights going to the Chan (Chan Centre for the Performing Arts) to listen to the VSO play Vivaldi. And Saturday nights would be for going to see John Mellencamp or Bruce Springsteen, and everything in between.”

Neither of his parents played instruments, but their love for music rubbed off on the Bhate and his older sister, Tahara, 28.

She studied piano and drew her brother’s interest.

“She was always playing and practising, and I’d lay on the floor beside her and listen,” Bhate said. “That was the inspiration to pick it up.”

While he did, percussion soon became his passion.

“I also tried trumpet, then clarinet, until someone finally put a drumstick in my hand and it kinda went from there.”

And where that leaves him right now is a busy run up to a Dec. 19 performance at Roy Barnett Hall at UBC where Bhate’s band — the 45th Ave Jazz Band — will be performing The Nutcracker Suite in a jazz style.

If that raises a few eyebrows and begs some questions, you’d be in the majority.

“Outside of the local jazz community, whenever I’ve advertised the show, I get back the glazed eyes and question, ‘What do you mean The Nutcracker jazz?’” Bhate said.

The idea was developed by jazz icons Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn — two of Bhate’s musical idols — who arranged the music and recorded it back in 1960.

But does it mesh?

“There’s so much material in classical music that jazz players can work with,” he said.

“It’s very rich in its repertoire. So, it’s not a big stretch to take the basic harmonic and melodic concepts that Tchaikovsky explored and just rearrange it for a large jazz ensemble.

“The fundamental principles of each piece in the suite are not changed. It’s more about how they are presented with the instrumentation, the general feel and groove,” he said.

For example, The Arabian Dance, in the original Nutcracker is re-imagined with a swing, alto saxophone in the middle, which reverts to a Calypso-Latin beat, Bhate explained.

From page 14 Because of its complexity, the jazz version of The Nutcracker is not usually taken on by community-sized jazz ensembles.

“It’s quite difficult in its scope as a full suite because it’s a lot of rehearsal and preparation.”

Music for the show arrived in September and rehearsals began in late October.

Two to three dress rehearsals will precede the concert, and Bhate said he is looking forward to getting on stage and performing.

“It’s really special to bring the idiom of a large jazz ensemble to a larger population, because, in general media, you don’t hear a lot of big jazz bands. I think people will be intrigued and very surprised how well the two go together — that these familiar melodies in The Nutcracker can be re-imagined.”

Bhate knows the concert is a pretty ambitious undertaking, due to both its difficulty, length, and need to recreate it as accurately as possible.

“I really ask a lot of the players and myself because the music is so dear to me, making sure all of the details

are there,” he said. “But I think with every concert experience that I put on — this is my third year with the band — I grow, learn some stuff about running the band. But out of all the concerts and seasons I’ve spent with this ensemble, I feel particularly special about this one.”

As for what the future holds for him?

“Every day is an adventure,” he said. “And every musical experience I get to have, I am thankful for,” he said. “My life right now

is very involved in different aspects of music.”

He is conductor of the Vancouver Pops Symphony Orchestra. He is working on a degree at UBC in classical orchestral performance. He directs the jazz band and still keeps a hand in piano.

“I can’t disconnect any part of my musical life. So, ideally, I’d like to keep all of this going as long as I can and see where the musical journey takes me,” he said, “and enjoy every second of it along the way.”

Byy A Alan Campbell few of them untangled the Christmas baubles dangling from some branches, one stood the decorative black heron back up after it keeled over due to the wind, whi the rest inspected little birdhouses and the sign erected in their honour. while It was w 8:30 a.m. — the school run rush — and as the gang of five (there’s usually six) shuffled shu around their little roundabout, a procession of parents en route to nearby De Beck Bec elementary honked their horns, waved and smiled, apparently in appreciation, at the invaders on the Dayton Avenue traffic island.

Warming to their transient audience, the group acknowledged the gratitude and Wa recognition with hand gestures and polite nods of the head. re Individually, the trio of retired couples are highly motivated and community-spirited.

In Collectively, their official title is the “Myron Court Gang,” who are frequently spotted C hanging out in and around their cul-de-sac off Dayton Avenue, near Garden City h and a Blundell roads, and are not “known to police.”

In I order orde to maintain the integrity of their gang, their modus operandi, if you will, was to adopt and beautify a roundabout about 100 yards from their 20-house cul-de-sac in a bold bid b to reach out into the community at large.

The result, said one of the gang leaders, has been astounding.

“It’s amazing who we are connecting with, even though we often are not speaking the same language,” said Myron Court Gang co-founder Lynda Pasacreta, of spending time on the th roundabout, which they took under their collective wings three years ago.

“We are a a very friendly group and involve everyone. We have a walking group every Tuesday, sometimes ending up in a pub,” said Pasacreta, who retired in 2012 as president of the Better Business Bureau.

“We have pot-luck nights, Christmas parties and street parties in the summer.

“There are Jewish families, Taiwanese, Chinese, Muslim, Christian, we’re all here.

“Living in a cul-de-sac…has given us the gift of community spirit at it’s best.

“It does take effort to step outside and connect with your neighbours. Step out of your house and say, ‘Hi.’”

By Alan Campbell hen Lorenzo Lagaspi was growing up in the Philippines, there was no electricity in his home, let alone Christmas lights.

As a child, he remembers the first time they had power over the festive season, when m his mom bought a tiny set of Christmas lights. th very moment, Lagaspi said to himself “maybe one day.”

ineups are unavoidable at the airport. Travellers dutifully queue for tickets, security, boarding and baggage to earn the right to fly the friendly skies.

But one summer day in the year when Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” topped the pop charts, Vancouver International Airport professed its love for passengers by introducing a new counter to queue at: the airport improvement fee kiosk. It was here where passengers began paying a travel tax that — despite once being considered temporary — has not only persisted, but doubled in cost.

a local not-for-profit organization we know as the Vancouver Airport Authority.

Important infrastructure was needed at Sea Island’s growing airport, said the authority, which moved ahead with plans for a 16-gate International Terminal Building, completed in 1996.

It was then Vancouver Airport Authority’s then CEO David Emerson infamously suggested the end was near for the airport improvement fee.

“We always said the fee was attached to this project, so once enough people go through the turnstiles to pay for the terminal and runway and retire the debt, then that fee is history,” said Emerson, according to a report in The Vancouver Sun. “To be on the safe side, I would estimate that to be somewhere in the neighbourhood of six years.”

The fee never went away.

One frequent traveller, Kevin Armstrong, refused to pay it. Four years after the airport authority introduced the charge, CTV News documented Armstrong’s fight. The man estimated he’d travelled through YVR 80 times without paying the fee.

“If I go into a restaurant...and you bring me the bill for the whole dinner, and me and my partner get up to leave, then you come up to me and say, ‘By the way, you have to pay $10 to use the table and utensils.’ That’s the analogy. How would you feel if that happened?” he said.

Armstrong argued if the airport needed more money, it should get it from the airlines, and the airlines can in turn get it from him.

“If Canadians don’t want to be paying $40 or $50 every time they use an airport five years from now, they better stand up right now and say enough is enough.”

but it has doubled. Today, passengers travelling outside B.C. pay $20. Those travelling within B.C. and Yukon pay $5. Connecting passengers don’t pay the toll.

Besides helping fund the international terminal and a runway, it’s been used to fund half the cost of numerous other projects, including the Sea Island section of the Canada Line and a 114,000-litre aquarium as part of an international terminal building expansion.

Fee funds are now being applied to a $1.8-billion plan that includes new highspeed baggage systems and upgrades to original areas of the 1968 domestic terminal.

The airport authority maintains the fee is needed in perpetuity because government doesn’t contribute to airport operations or building projects. Craig Richmond, the authority’s CEO, told the Richmond News YVR needs airfield and terminal infrastructure to “continue to build YVR as a world-class, sustainable gateway between Asia and the Americas.”

“The airport improvement fee is an established user-pay mechanism that allows us to

invest in ongoing projects that will ultimately create new jobs, increase access to global destinations and open more markets for B.C. goods,” he said in an e-mail.

Although most travellers have now become accustomed to paying the fee — especially since it’s now included in the cost of a ticket — it still tastes sour to Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers’ Association of Canada.

“I think it’s absolutely outrageous,” he said in an interview. “If it’s a gateway, why don’t they get the federal government to make these contributions? It certainly shouldn’t be on the backs of the flying public that live in Vancouver.”

Although most major Canadian airports now charge an airport improvement fee —many are even more expensive than YVR’s $20 — an airport just south of Richmond does not. Bellingham’s “utilitarian” airport is what travellers want, said Cran.

“Things like aquariums and some of the other stuff (YVR has) is not what we require and we don’t want to pay for it. But we are.

“And then there’s an exercise about challenges and solutions,” he said. “A lot of it is focused on communication, maybe a lack thereof, where things can get misinterpreted. So, the solution is to basically iron out those kinks and really create a clear mindset in the office space so there doesn’t become friction or negative competition.”

One of the tips to creating an office utopia is having co-workers develop some common ground.

“It’s about finding something that connects you with your colleagues,” he said, “so you can create that bond or that friendship. And the kindness part and compassion flows from there.”

But sometimes, conflict among work colleagues is inevitable. What happens then?

“That’s one of the things you have to be mindful of,” Risbey-Haines said.

“When that happens, it comes down to the ability to forgive. Plus, you have to learn to let things go.”

In short, when incidents happen, you cannot let it eat away at you.

“We’re not perfect, we all make mistakes. We’re human,” he said, adding that a quote from David Suzuki — one of his clients — fits well with the philosophy to forgive and move on. “He said, ‘Sometimes, you have to get things wrong first in order to get it right.’”

And when harmony is achieved in the workplace, one of the often overlooked, positive spinoffs can occur outside the office.

“Often, workers will go back to their families and be more positive in those relationships at home,” Risbey-Haines said.

New Mexico City air link a local job boost A new, daily service between YVR and Mexico City took off Thursday (Dec. 9), creating an estimated 160 jobs across the province, according to airport officials.

Announced in May, the non-stop flights are expected to strengthen not only holiday passenger traffic between the two countries, but enhance business links, said YVR president and CEO Craig Richmond.

YVR pegged the dollars and cents impact to B.C. at $9.9 million in gross domestic product, $3.4 million in taxes and $2.9 million in wages. Aeromexico will operate a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with seat capacity for 124 passengers including 12 in business. Aeromexico offers connectivity to 45 destinations within Mexico and 16 destinations in Latin America.

f you have a red wine lover on your Christmas shopping list, here are some premium wines they are sure to enjoy.

My recommendations were a result of the eighth Iconic Red Wine Tasting, hosted by Sip Wine’s Simon Wosk, who assembled a collection of the best B.C. reds for guests to judge. Among the judges, was veteran wine author and iconic expert on B.C. wines, John Schreiner.

All of the 19 wines were Bordeaux blends with at least two of the following: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

Black Hills 2013 Nota Bene ($62) was the crowd’s top choice. Lake Breeze’s 2011 Tempest ($52) was second, followed by Cassini Cellars 2012 Maximus ($40), NK’Mip 2012 Mer’r’iym ($53) and Lairana Cellars 2012 Twelve ($48). The sixth choice of the evening went to Church and State 2012 Quintessential ($59).

Two of my favourites were in the top six positions: NK’Mip was my second choice and Cassini was my sixth favourite.

Normally, I am not fond of Mission Hills premium reds, but their 2011 Quatrain ($75) was my number one choice and the 2011 Compendium ($86) was my fourth pick. I was also impressed with the Painted

This white displays aromas of toasty oak and vanilla, with flavours of pear, peach, and mango and nuts. It has minerality and crisp acidity to give it more depth and a good match for seafood.

I also tried the Singletree 2014 Siegerrebe ($19), which is a German style off dry white with a floral nose reminiscent of roses. There were also flavours of orange peel, apples, and lychees. If you like Gewurztraminer, this

Finally, I was impressed with the Singletree 2014 Pinot Noir ($17) made from Okanagan grapes. It had a gorgeous Burgundy red colour with a cranberry, beetroot, and herbal bouquet and taste.

I thoroughly enjoyed it’s smoothness with my Moroccan grilled Albacore Tuna and the Tillamook Oregon Aged white cheddar.

H

ave you ever wanted to hold a fortune in your hand? Go to the Bank of England on Threadneedle Street.

There it sits: a gold bar weighing 13 kilograms. At £22,881 per kilo on the day of my visit, that was £297,453, just waiting to be picked up. So, I reached out and lifted it.

Trouble was, I couldn’t take it with me.

The treasure was in a shatterproof glass box, with a hole for my hand and arm, in the Bank of England Museum, one of the most fascinating of London’s lesser-known museums.

As the museum explains, gold — in bars or more usually in coins — was what the bank promised to pay “the bearer” of the certificates it printed.

This sort of transferable promissory note had been in existence since the Chinese invented it in the 7th century, but only came to prominence in England in 1695 when the Bank of England (established a year earlier) began issuing banknotes.

England was then in a costly war with France and gold was in short supply, so paper money — £10 notes at first — came into being.

The note’s value was guaranteed by the bank, which promised to redeem it for gold.

No one expects such an exchange today, but gold still at least partially underpins paper currencies: 400,000 gold bars

are in storage somewhere beneath the museum visitor’s feet.

Most belongs to the United Kingdom’s Treasury; the rest is held in safekeeping for other central banks around the world.

The Bank of England’s gold has never been stolen, although it could have been in 1836, but for the honesty of a workman.

The bank’s directors got a cryptic note saying the writer had found a way into the vaults.

They arranged to meet him there one night and were gathered around the bullion when, “suddenly,” says a museum marker, “they heard a noise...and a man climbed from under the floorboards.”

He explained that he was a sewer worker and he’d discovered an old drain beneath the bank.

The directors, relieved, gave him £800 — a fortune when an average wage was £40 a year — and immediately had all the drains blocked.

Not all of the money on display here is real.

There’s an exhibit of forged banknotes — £50s, £20s and £10s — recalling the Nazis’ attempt to undermine the British economy at the start of the Second World War. Operation Bernhard produced £134 million in counterfeit notes, but not much of it reached Britain. (They were meant to be dropped by German aircraft, but the plan was nixed.)

While notes like this one were real, they never went into circulation and were used, a panel explains somewhat cryptically, “for internal accounting purposes only.”

But £1,000 notes — one is on exhibit here, dated 1928 — were in general use for many years.

They were scrapped in 1943. The highest-denomination British banknote at present is the £50.

That would get you a little more than two grams of gold.

ow in its third generation, the Mazda3 is the best-selling model in the brand’s line-up. Of the 3.5 million Mazda3 models sold worldwide since 2003, a total of 430,000 sold were in Canada.

Early generations were acclaimed for its expressive design, enjoyable driving experience, respectable economy, and solid craftsmanship. The current model continues that trend and has already earned 136 awards globally.

All of this results in a daunting challenge for its rivals. Those taking up the fight include the Ford Focus, VW Golf and Hyundai Elantra.

The Mazda3 enters the 2016 model year with only minor specification changes.

" Design

Mazda launched the all-new third generation in 2013. The redesigned Mazda3 was the third to adopt the brand’s KODOSoul of Motion design theme and the full-suite of SKYACTIV technologies.

The KODO design gives the Mazda3 its dynamic look. The large grille gives it a distinguished character, while the positioning of the A-pillars allow for great forward sightlines.

In addition to improving fuel efficiency and power, SKYACTIV seeks to create a direct connection between the driver and the car. The Mazda3 Sport makes even the daily commute exciting.

Available in two body styles, the standard Mazda3 is a compact sedan, whereas the Mazda3 Sport — the focus of this review - is a compact hatchback. The Mazda3 Sport comes in three trim levels, the base

GX, more luxurious GS, and the sporty GT. This generation of Mazda3 Sport has a wheelbase that’s two-inches longer, however overall length is almost twoinches shorter. Its proportions are very pleasing to the eye and many believe it to be the best-looking car in this segment.

" Performance

The Mazda3 Sport is available with two versions of Mazda s SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine. Mazda believes these two meet the Canadian market s diverse needs.

Powering GX and GS models is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder.

Output is rated at a healthy 155 hp and 150 lb.-ft. of torque.

The sporty Mazda3 Sport GT is powered by a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder. The increased displacement ups horsepower and torque to 184 and 185 respectively.

All models come standard with Mazda’s SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission, which is one of the best gearboxes in the segment.

GX and GS models have the option of a SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic. The GT has an optional six-speed auto with a Drive Selection Switch and paddle shifters.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV philosophy extends beyond the powertrain. The enhancements to the body and chassis have made the Mazda3 Sport stiffer and lighter. This allows it to be lively and responsive through corners without compromising ride comfort on the highway.

Sporty: Mazda3 ready to compete with European rivals with a lane departure warning system and active grille shutters, but the highlight is Mazda’s new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system.

Typically, about 10 per cent of an engine’s output is used simply to power the electrical systems. The i-ELOOP system stores kinetic energy created during deceleration and then uses that power for the electrical systems, so 100 per cent of the engine’s power can go to the wheels.

What this ultimately means for owners is that they can step up to the sportier Mazda3 Sport GT without any penalty to fuel economy.

" Environment

The cabin inside the Mazda3 Sport is smart-looking and well built. Mazda has improved its quality in recent years and now genuinely competes with European rivals. Controls are easy to use and they have a satisfying weight and feel.

All Mazda3 Sports come standard with a telescoping steering wheel, as well as height adjustment in the

driver’s seat.

While the Mazda3 Sport is fun to drive on a twisty road, the suspension is comfortable enough to absorb most bumps and the cabin is well insulated from wind and road noise. This makes long journeys relaxing.

The dash is dominated by the standard seven-inch colour touchscreen display.

All models run an updated Mazda Connect infotainment system which supports app functionality, and GT models add a voice-activated navigation system.

The GT models also comes with Mazda’s head up display system. Called the Active Driving Display, digital readouts of speed, navigation and other vehicle information are displayed on a small, clear screen on top of the dash.

Unsurprisingly, rear seat legroom is tight. However, two average-size adults can make due, but three is a pinch. The rear seats fold 60/40 for extra versatility and reveal 47 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

#2 Wildcats hope to realize 5 year dream Mark Booth

It’s a thin in numbers and large in talent roster that has all the ingredients to deliver Richmond its first B.C. senior girls basketball title in over 20 years.

What has been five seasons in the making, the McMath Wildcats have already embarked on a journey that they hope will take them to the provincial championship game come next March at the Langley Events Centre.

The Wildcats lived up to their pre-season No. 2 ranking at last weekend’s Skyline Invitational at Fraser Valley University, rolling to top honours. McMath produced three straight wins including a 66-42 triumph over Prince George’s Duchess Park in the final. It was one of six tournaments for McMath over the next three months.

Hall of fame coach Anne Gillrie-Carre and Paul Jones began working with the core of this group back in Grade 8. They lost just once as Grade 10s and finished fifth at the provincials a year ago. Along the way there has been plenty of adjusting to the roster on the fly to keep the provincial dream alive.

The team features just nine players, including one in Grade 8 and two more in Grade 10. The rotation is only eight deep for now while Hannah Partridge fully recovers from an ankle injury suffered playing soccer last spring.

“It’s quite a bit different for girls,” reasoned

■ McMath Wildcats opened their season last weekend by capturing the Skyline Invitational at Fraser Valley University in Abbotsford. The team includes: Jessica Jones, Bobbi Jo Colburn, Abby Zawada, Jessica Zawada, Hannah Partridge, Elizabeth Kennedy, Lyric Custodio, Justine McCaskill and Maraha Gibson-Zeinoun.

means is you really can’t have any injuries, illness or foul trouble at the crucial time of the season. Fortunately, a lot of the (top

teams) are in the same position as us.”

The Wildcats’ fifth place result at the 2015 provincials included a heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to No. 2 seed WJ Mouat. It came on the heels of a tough defeat to Handsworth in the Lower Mainland Championship game that saw a double digit second half lead evaporate. Both games are considered part of the learning experience for a squad that is basically intact.

Throw in extensive work over the summer by many players and Wildcats are poised to take the next step. Recent Simon Fraser University commit Jessica Jones, along with Bobbi-Jo Colburn played for the U17 provincial team. Abby Zawada was with the U15 B.C. team, while Jessica Zawada, Lyric Custodio and Justine McAskill were very active in club ball.

Colburn was an all-star last weekend while Jones collected tournament MVP honours.

“We have kids who have worked hard at basketball, in particularly during the offseason,” said Paul Jones. “If they all step up then we have a chance this year. We want to be getting a steady diet of good teams throughout the season to be prepared in March. There shouldn’t be any surprises.”

McMath’s biggest threats reside in the Fraser Valley as usual, including defending champion and No. 1 ranked Brookswood, along with No. 3 Riverside. The Wildcats will be challenged when they host the Lower Mainland championships at the end of February, by the likes of No. 9 Handsworth, along with Argyle, New West and Churchill.

Devils look for quicker starts in tough stretch Mark Booth

Richmond Devils are off to a solid start in the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League (SCFAHL) and it could be even better if they find a way to come out of the gate quicker.

The Devils will take a 5-3-3 record into Saturday night’s key home tilt with the Fraser Valley Jets (8-5-2) at the Richmond Ice Centre. They will be looking to score in the opening period for the first time since late October — a stretch that goes back six games.

“I was joking the other day with my assistant coach that maybe we should get (the scorekeeper) to put a goal up on the scoreboard for our opponent before the game has even started,” laughed Richmond head coach Tony Cheema. “For whatever reason, we are just a different team when we are behind.

“Put some pressure on them and that’s when you really see what the Devils are all about. You will see the girls’ drive and really use our team speed which is one of our real strengths.

When the Devils do put 60

minutes together, Cheema is confident his squad can beat anyone in the eight team circuit.

The Ridge Meadow Moose are sailing along at the top of the standings with a 12-1-1 record and Richmond hasn’t seen them since a 3-2 exhibition win back in September. The teams will meet for real in a home-and-home series starting Sunday in Langley.

The return match is Dec. 13 — the Devils’ final game before the holiday break.

“That is one I am really looking forward to,” continued Cheema.

“They are very similar to us in that they rely on their speed as well.

“They have certainly showed they can score goals this season.”

The Moose have somewhat bucked the league trend with 52 goals so far in 14 games. That’s 17 more than their nearest rival and 20 more than the Devils, who do enjoy three games in hand.

For the most part, the top teams teams have relied on stingy play for their success. Second place Kamloops have surrendered a mere seven goals in 13 games.

Richmond also has a sparking defensive record with just 18 goals against to date.

That is definitely the case with Kamloops who got their top goalie back and she has been outstanding for them. You also see teams with more depth on defence as well.”

The Devils’ blueline has been bolstered this season by three key additions. Chantal Despiegelaere and Arianna Castillo have joined the club from college hockey, while Ravens’ graduate Tamara Wong is with the team full-time

after focusing on university last season.

The SCFAHL regular season continues until mid-March with the teams battling for spots into the provincial championships, slated for Kamloops.

The Wildcats met the John Oliver Jokers in the bronze medal game. It was a rematch of a Lower Mainland playoff game, held two weeks earlier and won by McMath 3-1. This time, the teams were deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation time and the Vancouver school prevailed in a penalty shootout.

Nishaan Dulay and Matt Loveland had scored the earlier goals for the Wildcats.

“It was a very disappointing loss,” said head coach Mike Quinn. “Overall though, a good season from a team that was depleted at times through injuries and lost some really good players before the season and along the way.”

The Wildcats opened the tournament by winning their pool group to advance to the semi-finals.

They started with a 6-1 romp of Courtenay’s

Mark Isfeld. Santiago Carvalheiro-Nunes led the way with a hat trick. Jayden Jordan, Logan Hooper and Jamieson Lee also scored.

A goal by Liam Fitzmaurice then gave McMath a 1-0 win over the Alpha Aztecs from Burnaby.

The boys then closed out preliminary play with a 3-1 defeat to Duchess Park of Prince George. Loveland had the lone goal.

The result left the Widlcats tied with Alpha for top spot in the group but they advanced based on the head-to-head result.

The championship run would end with 5-0 defeat to eventual champion Okanagan Mission. The Kelowna school simply overpowered the locals with a dominating performance.

It was only McMath’s second loss in regulation time this season. Along the way, the Steveston school was crowned Richmond and Lower Mainland champions.

She was also blessed with many caring and loving nephews, nieces, and friends.

Roy Nobuo Matsumura passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Chilliwack, BC at age 68 years. He was born June 5, 1947 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Roy is survived by his son, Blaine, mother Yasue, brother, Danny and extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Matsuo Matsumura.

WHITE SPOT RICHMOND CENTRE CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON TRADITION TO BENEFIT LOCAL HEALTH CARE

A

heart-warming Christmas tradition to benefit local health care will continue once again this year as White Spot Richmond Centre holds its annual Christmas luncheon on Christmas Day. For the 14th year, White Spot Richmond Centre will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with all staff time, tips and net proceeds being generously donated to Richmond Hospital Foundation.

This year the fundraising event has added meaning as it is the first year without Prakash Ganatra, White Spot Richmond Centre’s owner who passed away in May this year.

“This is a staff-led event that Prakash had originally begun,” says Charlie Tsang, Manager, White Spot Richmond Centre.

“We really wanted to continue this in honour of him. It’s his legacy. Just as our outstanding service and commitment to guests continue, we wanted to continue this tradition as well.

This remains an important fundraising event for staff. “ Originally from India, Ganatra emigrated to Canada in 1973 and worked almost exclusively

at White Spot. When he came from Bombay, he noticed that little was open on Christmas Day in Richmond and he wanted to provide an opportunity for somewhere for people to go—people who may be single and on their own, seniors, people without families nearby.

“Prakash never wanted to take the spotlight.

He always wanted the credit to go to staff for their hard work and donations. Today, Prakash’s wife Veena and family remain very supportive of the event. We all miss him but we know he’s here.”

That support and commitment to community are just some of Richmond’s endearing qualities, Charlie says. “Richmond is a great community. It’s growing rapidly and it’s so diverse but it still retains a community feel,” says Charlie, who is married with two children, 16 and 14. “I fell in love with the community and moved my family here years ago. My own children even volunteer at our event.”

Charlie says nearly 60 staff members will be generously volunteering their time and donating their wages and tips on a day when most families are celebrating at home. “We have tremendous staff who are so dedicated to our guests and helping out at this event.”

Since the event’s inception in 2001, staff tips and net proceeds from the event have totalled more than $100,000 to help improve local care at Richmond Hospital.

“We all do this for the health of the community,” he says. “We have staff who have been here for over 35 years. They have kids and grandkids who grew up in Richmond.

My family has used Richmond Hospital. My grandma and grandpa have used Richmond Hospital. Both my kids have needed Richmond Hospital when they’ve been ill at some point.
