t’s a painful thing to see your child suffer at school — to get calls telling you to come pick them up because they’ve had an inconsolable meltdown, to be told they’ve bit and punched their teacher, to see them endure panic attacks just at the thought of walking through the school doors.

These are some of the realities for parents of kids who have significant and complicated special needs.

When I first started at the Richmond News, I remember a mom came in wanting to talk to a reporter about her son who had a number of mental health diagnoses (at the time I didn’t even know an 8-yearold could have clinical depression) and had been kicked out of yet another school. I don’t actually remember the story I wrote, but I’ll never forget her sense of desperation.

Our school district is committed to ensuring all students are provided the opportunity to “develop the attitudes, skills and knowledge which will enable them to enjoy a productive and satisfying life and to be positive, responsible participants in our democratic society and the global community,” according to its mission statement.

It’s a laudable goal, and even an achievable one, but it’s not a reality. We have some great teachers and administrators here. My kids have had many who are both skilled and absolutely committed to the job, but it’s a big job and the system is simply not resourced to handle some of the toughest cases.

This is where Glen Eden comes in.

We wrote about the school in Wednesday’s paper.

It’s technically an “independent” school, although it doesn’t even call itself a school. Rather, it’s a “multimodal centre.” That might not mean much to you, but what I’m sure means everything to inquiring parents is the centre’s tag line: “We never give up on your child... and that’s a promise.”

The story’s hook (here’s the other shoe dropping) was that the school recently lost a $200,000 education grant and will close by the end of the month if someone doesn’t bail it out.

I’m not a big believer in public funding of private schools. But no one puts their child in a school like Glen Eden just to give them an academic edge, or to have them exposed to religious education, or to play elite hockey — that, I’d say, you’re welcome to pay for yourself. Glen Eden is quite another thing.

The school is in the Richmond-Queesnborough riding of Liberal MLA Jas Johal. To hear him tell it, the school has been kicked around like a football as it falls under so many ministries – Education, Health, Child and Family development.

But it’s encouraging to see Johal take on the fight for the kids who need this kind of support. It’s also encouraging to hear Johal talk about NDP Education Minister Rob Fleming as “a good guy,” who he’s working with to find a solution. It gives one hope for productive politics.

In my mind, an ideal solution would be to fund all schools so full and genuine inclusion can happen, but we’re simply not there yet.

In the meantime, to do anything less than support a school that never gives up on its students is unconscionable.

Onni hearing looms Dear Editor, Re: “Steveston laneway decision seems sneaky,” Letters, Dec. 8.

Lisa Whittle is upset about the lack of transparency from city council, due to the decision for laneway paving happening in a closed session.

At the council meeting, no one answered residents’ questions as to why the laneways must be paved, so they could simply better understand why their greenspace is turning into blacktop.

Coun. Carol Day tried to find viable alternatives, to no avail.

There is another issue of serious importance to Steveston Village: The future of the Onni site. The public hearing will be on Monday, to decide if the Mixed Maritime Use zoning should be lifted and, if so, for how much money.

I raised my concern that this date, so deep into the holiday season, would prevent most residents from participating. Unfortunately,

my request to reschedule the Onni hearing to the New Year was declined.

It is concerning to see this trend of inflexibility and opaque governance.

Dear Editor, Re: “Man charged after Canada Line assault,” News, Dec. 8.

My heart goes out to the young Richmond resident, Noor Fadel, for being subjected to an attack by a relentless bully.

Noor stood her ground and didn’t let the bully have his way. The good Samaritan, Jake Taylor, has set an excellent example by coming to Noor Fadel’s aid and scaring away her attacker.

This unfortunate incident goes to show that in this scary environment there are still young men such as Jake Taylor who are willing to put themselves at risk in order to help a fellow citizen in distress.

Jake deserves our compliments for standing up for an innocent victim who was facing a very dangerous situation.

We need more people like him. To Noor Fadel, I would like to say well done for standing up to a person with a twisted mind. You handled the situation bravely.

Hats off to both of you!

Need love all year long

Dear Editor, I’ve been involved with the Downtown Eastside (DTES) for more than 20 years in a voluntary capacity. Way back then, there were only hundreds of street folks living the transient life. Now, perhaps 4,000?

The cost to taxpayers of keeping a street person alive has been estimated to be upwards of $50,000. There are huge costs in hospitalization, policing, etc. — twice as much than providing adequate housing.

It’s almost more expensive to keep a homeless person alive than keeping a prisoner in our penal system.

I am not sure what we, as Richmondites, do for our homeless besides offering emergency shelters when the weather dips below a certain temperature.

Vancouver city council and Mayor Gregor Robertson, have tried and have mandated to eliminate homelessness.

But, as we all know, this is impossible. Reasons range from not-in-my-back-yard mentality, prohibitive expenses, migration from other places and even people not wanting to be housed as it takes away their freedoms.

With stable homes, many of the street folks can get real help and not be burdens to society.

As you know, we cannot force a free citizen to undergo treatment or rehabilitation, or even to be housed. Vancouver has a mild climate; this alone attracts people from other places. The DTES has many organizations set up to advocate for and house, albeit mostly temporarily, our street population. It’s where many will go. No one goes hungry there; there are more meals than are needed.

Also, the DTES is a real community, with its own hierarchy, customs, and heart. There are those who know the system and are first in line for everything that is available to them. There is a sense of camaraderie, a sense of justice of what is right and wrong. One does not cut in line.

One helps those in need when possible.

The free meals are heavy in carbohydrates, as these are the easiest and cheapest means of feeding them. With new composting laws, many companies are offloading

their perishables to the shelters to the point donations of certain perishables such as bread and rotting veggies can no longer be accepted.

The shelters have to fight for funding; there are low barrier and high barrier shelters, women’s only, pets permitted, etc. But these are temporary. And single-room hotels and shelters have problems, which we have heard of in the news.

Then there are the coats and blanket drives. Yes, these help keep the homeless warm, if they are not wet. Once wet, even the most expensive blankets or coats, are not useful. Then again, anything that is new or in good condition may and probably will be sold for drugs. This is just the way it is. The plentiful donations the DTES receives around Christmas, especially from well-intended “rich” companies/people, will be sold to provide drugs.

There’s no easy solution!

One solution is we have to teach our children that we should treat others the way we want to be treated. All of us deserve love and be loved.

However, much of the love for street folks comes at Christmas time. I sometimes get cynical about this as we have schools/companies collecting food donations, awaiting photo ops in December.

Where’s the love in March?

Problems in need of this love are ubiquitous. There are those at the bottom of the ladder who don’t get anything, who won’t go to seek help in shelters. There are women who have been abused, who work in the sex trade, who have multiple pregnancies and, unfortunately, many are Aboriginal. There are men with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and drug addictions.

And now there is the fentanyl crisis...

So, much help is needed, every month of the year. And when we help our homeless by giving, we let them know that we are all people and that we are all one.

illing the front row of courtroom 107, Adele Dean, holding her five-month-old baby girl alongside Tom and Lianne Dean, waited patiently for justice to commence and, ultimately, be served.

Within a few minutes, lawyer Kevin Filkow, whose firm specializes in defending people accused of driving offences, appeared to represent Michael Wing Sing Fan, who’s charged with driving with undue care and attention.

Less than a minute later, a new court date in January had been set for Fan, who didn’t make an appearance and was represented only by his lawyer.

The family and close friends of Brad Dean — who was killed just over a year ago on River Road in east Richmond after Fan’s car allegedly smashed head-on into 33-yearold Dean’s cycling group — had waited 13 months for Fan to appear in court. It was over in 60 seconds.

“It is what we thought would happen and

we know it is what could very well happen again in January. That is the process I guess,” said Brad’s father, Tom, outside the Richmond Provincial Court room, which was also packed with close family and friends of Brad, some of whom were part of the cycling group on that fateful Sunday in November, 2016.

“Crown (counsel) told us afterwards that Fan could plead guilty in January or he may not. Our view hasn’t changed, however.

“We are still shocked that the Crown didn’t follow the police recommendation for criminal proceedings.

“This could actually go all the way through the process and (Fan) may never actually appear, because it’s only a driving offence.

It’s a disgrace.”

After Crown Counsel decided not to follow a police recommendation of criminal charges, Tom had previously suggested he may pursue B.C.’s Attorney General to overturn the decision.

“We haven’t done that yet. We’re still hoping the Crown can do its job,” he told the Richmond News.

“The maximum penalty can still mean jail time. We are looking for at least that kind of

penalty, if he’s found guilty.”

Outside the courthouse, Brad’s mom, Lianne, said she gets the impression that the justice system in the province can’t cope.

“I do believe the system is overwhelmed and (Crown is) looking for the easiest conviction,” said Lianne, holding a picture of her son and trying to hold back her tears.

Pointing to the picture, she added, “This is who Brad was. Brad was a talented, intelligent, compassionate human being.

“We stand here as his voice. A voice for justice. He would have wanted us to raise these issues.”

Turning to her baby granddaughter, who was born eight months after Brad was killed, Lianne said, “He would have loved his daughter; he never had a chance to meet her; but we know he’s with us right now.”

Asked by media outside of court if she could see any of her husband’s characteristics in their daughter, Brad’s wife, Adele, understandably broke down for a moment.

“I wish he could have been part of her life,” said Adele, after gathering her emotions.

Adele, who only found out two days after her husband’s death that she was pregnant, said she plans to come back to court for each and every court date set for Fan. Brad was killed on Nov. 6 last year after Fan, who was 19 at the time of the crash, allegedly plowed head-on into a group of six cyclists on a notorious stretch of River Road, where it meets Westminster Highway in east

After quitting the gas completely and receiving treatment and physical therapy, he can now walk “with a limp,” but is still not fully recovered.

He hopes by sharing his experience, more people will learn about the potential risks of “laughing gas,” which he believes are underappreciated. He’d also like to see the government restrict access to it.

“It’s very popular among international students and local teens at parties or clubs. One third of my friends have taken it; they are just not as serious as me,” said Wallace.

“When I first had it, I thought there must be no severe consequences if people can sell it in public and the government has no restrictions.”

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) said it cannot verify the case at Richmond Hospital for patient confidentiality reasons.

“I can tell you recreational use of nitrous oxide is uncommon, and hospitalization related to its use is even more uncommon,” said Gavin Wilson, director of VCH public affairs.

Richmond-based addictions psychiatrist Dr. Sree Nagendran said he hasn’t had any patient seeking help for abusing nitrous oxide, but he is aware of its risks. “(Damages) usually occur after one to six months of heavy use,” said Nagendran.

“Effects can be loss of sensation in the legs or limbs, or difficulty in walking.

“It’s because the gas itself reduces the availability of vitamin B12, and that causes what we call diminution of the nervous system.”

He said patients need to be treated with vitamin B12 injections and counselling therapies to find out the reasons why they took it in the first place.

Catherine Cosgrove, clinic director of the Sobriety Home Foundation, a Quebec-based drug and alcohol treatment centre, published an article recently warning of the serious damage N2O can have on the body. In fact, she called it “the next silent killer.”

She has patients who have suffered symptoms similar to those experienced by Wallace.

“It surprised me when, only last year, we had three who called; two came in to ask for treatment for N2O use,” Cosgrove told the News.

“The problem is that, the high time is very short, only lasting for a few minutes. So you go, ‘oh, I will use more,’ then people become addicted. But every time you use it, it causes brain damage and has neurological consequences.

“Many of the brain damages are permanent — not something that can be repaired.”

She said it’s psychologically addictive, instead of physically addictive, but because there have been relatively few cases, there is not much information available.

“People need to be educated about this alternative to getting high. Just because nitrous is not an illegal street drug, does not make it safe,” said Cosgove.

Richmond RCMP said it is not aware of any cases relating to N2O overdose.

Firefighter honoured after PTSD death

Asked about the WorkSafeBC determination, Wilkinson said he was “happy that Bryan’s family will now have the benefit of this designation and they will now be taken care of properly.”

Wilkinson added that Kongus was “very talented” and “brought lots of energy to the job and was always in the middle of things.

“He did his job very well and was excellent at his trade. But he was a loving father and his family were very special in his life.”

his Monday will be a very poignant day for firefighters in Richmond.

Not only will they be honouring a fallen comrade with a full-honours procession and funeral, they will be saluting the significance of Capt. Donald “Bryan” Kongus being the first firefighter on record in Richmond to have died of work-related PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

Kongus, a 44-year-old husband and fatherof-four, died in August, after being off work for more than a year.

The IAFF Local 1286 — the Richmond firefighters’ union — the Richmond fire department and Kongus’ family wanted to delay any memorial until WorkSafeBC had given its final assessment on the cause of his death.

And, recently, after Kongus’ passing was eventually determined to have been caused

by PTSD as a result of his work as a firefighter, he can now be given the reverence of the aforementioned full-honours.

The parade in Capt. Kongus’ memory will begin at 10:20 a.m. at 10851 Shellbridge Way, near Cambie and Shell roads, before heading east along Bamfield Gate and Drive to the Fraserview Menonite Church at 11295 Mellis Drive, where the service will take place at 11 a.m.

“PTSD, when left undetected, can have a very big effect,” said Cory Parker, president of IAFF Local 1286, who described himself as a friend of Kongus.

before his death. Early diagnosis is everything.

“He had been struggling with it for about two years; it is really sad. It went undiagnosed for years until nearer the time of his death.

“Mental health issues for firefighters are growing larger every day, so to get confirmation that Bryan’s death was related to PTSD, stemming from the workplace, is significant.”

After joining the Richmond fire department in 1994, Kongus worked in several local firehalls and was considered a valuable member of Richmond Fire-Rescue operation.

“He was fun, enthusiastic and outgoing. He loved life and was very fit,” Parker recalled of Kongus, who was cremated soon after his death in August.

“He loved horses and had a horse of his own and he loved riding his Harley Davidson.”

Tim Wilkinson, Richmond Fire-Rescue’s deputy chief of operations, pointed to the large number of stresses on firefighters all over the world today.

“There are events and items that are un-

natural to see; we have a vision of what the body looks like,” Wilkinson told the Richmond News when asked about the effects of PTSD on his firefighters.

“When something traumatic takes place, it affronts our sense of normality. Then you could be going through some things in your own life at the same time.

“It tends to have a significant effect on a firefighter and creates a higher stress than normal. This is what firefighters go through every day. It impacts you as a person and you start questioning yourself.

“It doesn’t appear that it’s bothering anyone else but, of course, it is. It’s very complex and it does have more impact on some than others and can create a hole in your confidence.”

Wilkinson said Kongus’ situation was “very complex, with lots of different components going on.

“Nationally, (PTSD) is getting worse, but we are maybe understanding it a little bit better than we used to.”

n terms of current mental health support in place for Richmond’s firefighters, Wilkinson said his department was the first in B.C. to have a Critical Incident Stress Management system activated.

The system, said Wilkinson, is utilized on a “very regular” basis by his members in the aftermath of traumatic events attended by the firefighters.

However, a new, two-day course — called “Resilient Minds” and created by the Vancouver Fire Department and WorkSafeBC — is about to be rolled out at Richmond’s firehalls.

“It’s quite intensive and trains people to look for the signs in the workplace and at home,” explained Wilkinson.

“It offers help on learning to cope with the stresses and being supportive of others.”

Wilkinson said new recruits already get similar training during their orientation, but at a “more basic level.”

Members of the public are invited to line the parade route in honour of Kongus and, pending seating availability, are welcome to attend the service.

man who ingratiated himself within Richmond’s inner most political and social circles has been found to have committed fraud by the B.C. Securities Commission (BCSC).

Entrepreneur and businessman Paul Oei is found to have illegally procured money from Chinese investors — while simultaneously offering them help to obtain Canadian citizenship under federal immigrant investor programs — to spend on himself.

The investment money, totalling just over

$5 million, flowed through trust accounts of Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido’s law firm, which is now being sued by some of the prospective investor-class immigrants in various civil suits before the Supreme Court of B.C. There are numerous photos of Oei, and his wife and business partner Loretta Lai, on the Internet that show him appearing to live a well-connected, lavish lifestyle.

Oei not only appears to have had friendly relations with Peschisolido and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he has donated money to the BC Liberals, Richmond First city councillors, See Oei page 11

Oei controlled three companies dating back to 2006: Canadian Manu Immigration and Financial Services Inc., 0863220 B.C. Ltd. and 0905701 B.C. Ltd. The BCSC notes that beginning in 2009, Oei solicited investments for two start-up recycling companies (which were to operate a recycling plant in the Fraser Valley): Cascade Renewable Carbon Corp. and Cascade Renewable Organic Fertilizer Corp. (known collectively as Cascade), through an indirect investment structure.

Canadian Manu acquired securities from Cascade and then sold them to investors.

In most cases, the BCSC said the investors’ money went into the companies’ trust accounts. The money was then dispersed into six bank accounts of Canadian Manu and Oei. In its decision, the BCSC panel stated: “The respondents (Oei and his companies) misappropriated these funds and used them for their own purposes and not

as the investors were told they would be used.”

The BCSC describes, in its Dec. 12 judgement, how Oei operated outside of the law: “Oei is a resident of the Lower Mainland, who was not registered under the Securities Act during the relevant period. Canadian Manu was incorporated in B.C. in 2006 and was registered by the Insurance Council of British Columbia during the relevant period, but was not registered under the Act. “Oei was a director and officer of the two B.C. based numbered companies,

0863220 and 0905701, since their respective incorporations in 2009 and 2011.

0905701 was dissolved in August 2015. Neither company was registered under the Act during the relevant period.”

n a bid to instill some traditional Christmas spirit into the air, a mobilized group of Steveston residents is teaming up with members of the Vancouver World Peace Choir.

Early on Sunday evening, the residents of the Nautica South and Nautica North complexes — near No. 2 and Andrews roads — will tour the streets along with eight members of the choir to perform traditional Christmas carols.

A 40-strong group is expected to take to the streets between 5 and 6 p.m. for the carolling, which is part of the residents’ annual Winter Fest, which kicks off with refreshments at 4 p.m.

“We’ve been doing this for two years, but this is the first time we’ve teamed up with Nautica North,” said Dolores Werk, a Nautica South resident and one of the many organizers who fund the event themselves.

“Other complexes in the area are starting to pay attention also. It could be about 40 or so of us, maybe more.

“It depends on the weather; rain is forecast but Steveston is very dry and I think we’ll miss most of it. And the walk itself is only about half an hour.”

Werk said the carolling will no doubt be the highlight of the cozy event.

“I love things that are a little bit different, this is good old fashioned Christmas spirit,” she said.

“We want to inject some of that tradition back into Christmas.”

S

ince 2010, Shellmontians have gathered one evening, before Christmas, to hold what is now Richmond’s longest running Christmas parade, after the Steveston Santa Claus parade took a timeout a few years back.

And so, the 8th annual Shellmont Christmas Parade is set for Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and spontaneous carolling is to be expected.

While the parade begins at Woodward elementary school, there is no specific parade route, explained co-founder and organizer David Langer, a father of three. And friend and fellow parade organizer Jeff Joseph also downplays the special event.

“It’s just a group of families,” said Joseph.

“Some years it gets bigger, some years it dips. Usually we’ll have in the 60-80 people range.”

The grassroots event usually features a few cars with

inflatable Christmas figures tied to the roof. Once gathered together, the neighbourhood moves through the “Seas” (side streets that start with “sea” within the Shellmont arterial road quadrant of Steveston Highway, No. 5 Road, Williams Road and Shell Road) and ends up at Tim Horton’s for coffee and hot chocolate.

“Around the time we started we all just ended back at one family’s house and all these people came and we didn’t know them, so we decided to move to Tim Horton’s,” chuckled Langer.

The parade started with four families, explained Langer, but blossomed into something bigger year over year. Initially the families blared music from the radio station playing Christmas music. Then they bought a sound system and played their own tunes. That sound system blew, so they bought a bigger one and put it in the back of a pick-up truck, where they can crank the Christmas carols.

Funny and memorable stories seem to pop up during each parade.

Langer said a few years ago, a man from Texas read about the parade in the Richmond News while waiting for his wife

at the airport. He hopped in a cab and joined the Shellmont crew that evening and returned to the airport after coffee.

The parade always has a unique, sometimes bizarre, poster that makes its rounds in the neighbourhood and online to inform people of the event. 2015 featured John Lennon and Yoko Ono and this year’s poster features Jack Nicholson in The Shining (see Richmond-News.com).

While Joseph said he doesn’t consider Shellmont to be any different than other neighbourhoods, it is one of the more well-known areas of Richmond, along with Burkeville and Steveston.

Langer said the neighbourly feeling has much to do with the school, which is in the centre of the quadrant.

“We all met when (our children) were in Kindergarten. So the school was the heart of it. The school is the centre of everything. And we have such a mix of people of every ethnicity. So our school has always been multicultural,” said Langer Last year, Woodward parents were some of the most vocal opponents of the Richmond School District school closure proposals (Woodward being among the schools on the chopping block).

Santa visits Steveston

ichmond’s biggest Christmas parade is back.

The Steveston Santa Claus Parade, hosted by the Richmond Fire Fighters Association (IAFF Local 1286), takes place Christmas Eve. The parade begins at 6 p.m. at 3211 Regent Street and runs up and down Pleasant, Georgia, Garry, Richmond and Broadway streets, largely between Second and Sixth avenues. The parade ends at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Chatham Street (next to the Little Cantina and Mega Sushi).

Note that there may be last minute tweaks to the route, due to construction.

However, Hardisty pointed out that Christmas time is not necessarily the best time for consumers to shop for bargains.

“Typically overall, prices are not cheaper right before Christmas because it is a time when everybody needs to buy,” said Hardisty.

“Sometimes it looks like a big sale but isn’t really. For example, something can be sold for $100 normally and the merchants can say it’s regularly $200 but they marked it down.”

He said a popular strategy at Christmas is bundling — grouping many products together for one price.

“It seems like a good deal because you get a lot of things for a slightly lower price but you probably wouldn’t have bought each of those things individually.”

“Christmas shopping is good for those who enjoy the atmosphere, or who have to buy gifts. The social consequences of not buying gifts for anybody would be much worse than the money you would save by waiting until Boxing Day sales,” chuckled Hardisty.

Some people have criticized exchanging gifts at Christmas as a waste of money, while contributing to clutter by receiving things one doesn’t necessarily need.

Hardisty said the best way to avoid that is to ask and only buy gifts that others need.

“If you buy something for somebody and they don’t want it, then you are wasting your time and money, and it’s bad for the environment, and the other person will also feel bad,” said Hardisty.

“It seems to be too easy to ask somebody what they want and then get it for them. But research shows that if you ask somebody what they want and you give them that thing that they asked for, they are happy.

“First of all, they got the gift they wanted and also it shows that you are listening to them.”

Another tip from Hardisty is to trade interesting experiences the person may like rather than material objects.

“It can be concert tickets, or kart racing, something you could do together. Those make great gifts,” said Hardisty.

“They also lead to more connections between people and more memories to talk about. And of course, it’s often better for the environment.”

Richmond to NoCal via YVR

Vancouverites who visit the California capital of Sacramento will soon no longer have to change planes in another U.S. city, thanks to Air Canada, who just announced plans to have daily non-stop flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Sacramento International Airport.

The service launches May 17 and will be on CRA-705 planes, which can seat 75 passengers. The airline plans to designate 10 of those seats for business class.

Flights depart Vancouver at 8:55 a.m. and arrive in Sacramento at 11:05 a.m. Return flights leave Sacramento at 11:45 a.m. and arrive in Vancouver at 1:57 p.m.

“As Air Canada continues to expand its U.S. routes out of [Vancouver,] Sacramento is a welcome addition and will offer our passengers even more options for travel destination s as well as convenient connections,” said Craig Richmond, president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority.

He estimates that the new service will create close to 80 new jobs and contribute $5.8 million to B.C.’s GDP.

“The preparation started a year ago,” said Luft.

“We play Christmas music the whole time...and we also incorporate a digital approach with customers in the holiday season.”

Hardisty said stores try to make the mall a happy place where people enjoy spending time.

“Some research shows the longer you spend in a store, and the longer any consumer stands in a store, the more they tend to buy,” he added.

Yesterday (Dec. 14), OpenRoad Auto Group, Toyota Canada, and the City of Richmond were due to officially launch construction of Canada’s largest Toyota dealership.

The groundbreaking ceremony was set to take place at 13100 Smallwood place in the Richmond Auto Mall at 1:30 pm.

This new dealership site will be 205,000 square feet and is expected to be complete by mid-2019.

“Traffic has been steadily growing since November,” said Joey Kwan, director of promotions and public relations at Aberdeen Centre.

“We are expecting to see a lot more traffic over the weekend and the day before Christmas, when people come here for their last minute shopping.”

A survey shows that British Columbians plan to spend around $660 on average for gifts for Christmas this year, an eight percent increase from last year.

“It is the biggest purchasing time of the year and by far the biggest expenditures made by consumers,” said David Hardisty, assistant professor of marketing and behavioural science division at the University of B.C. “Usually that’s what makes the difference between being profitable or not, so it’s super important for retailers.

he Great Wall of Cheese will be no more, as Richmond’s grocery store carousel continues to spin, with Loblaws City Market confirming it will be leaving its location at Shellmont, near Ironwood Plaza.

“We can confirm the Loblaws City Market store located at 12339 Steveston Hwy. in Richmond, BC will be closed Feb. 3,” stated Karen Gumbs, director of public relations for Loblaw Companies Ltd. “The decision to close the store was not an easy one as we value our customers and employees there. We recognize the important role the store has played. Unfortunately, the store has remained unprofitable and we don’t expect that to turn around. For the employees of the store, we are committed to fairness. We have provided significant notice and severance to help with the transition,” stated

The store opened in The Gardens development with great fanfare in October, 2014. Customers raved particularly about specialty products, prepared meals in the deli and a 3.5-metre-high refrigerated cooler of more than 300 cheeses.

There are unconfirmed rumours a Thrifty’s may take the place of City Market. Thrifty’s parent company Sobeys did not respond to the Richmond News’ inquiries.

Grocers are facing stiff competition these days, vying for customer dollars, according to Canada’s Food Price Report 2018, published Wednesday from Dalhousie University.

“Food prices are being kept artificially low due to the aggressive discounting practices of the major Canadian food retailers,” said Paul Uys, report co-author, citing increased competition from large distributors.

handful of Richmond businesses met with B.C.’s Minister of Jobs, Trade and Technology Bruce Ralston on Tuesday, during his first tour of the city since the BC NDP formed government in May. Ralston also visited the Richmond Chamber of Commerce to speak to his efforts to promote innovation in local business.

“I spoke about our government’s plan to establish an innovation commission and hire an innovation commissioner, who will be a senior public person who will lead the innovation efforts on behalf of the provincial government,” said Ralston.

“The challenge for us, as a relatively small population in a huge global market, is to be competitive; through innovation we can figure out solutions to create and sustain good-paying jobs into the future,” he added.

Much of Ralston’s focus is on propping up the technology sector. Although the former BC Liberal government established its B.C. Tech Strategy in 2016, Ralston said there was too much focus on the LNG sector.

“The previous government had a singular focus on one sector, the LNG sector. Only very belatedly when they realized, I think, market conditions for LNG weren’t that great in the immediate and short term, did they endeavour to switch. We’re not starting with that view, we have a whole-of-the-economy approach for both rural and urban British Columbia,” said Ralston.

Richmond-Queensborough Liberal MLA Jas Johal, is Ralston’s official opposition critic.

Johal said Ralston is “oversimplifying” the LNG claim. He suggested the NDP retain global capital investments.

Ralston said that with the commission, which is expected to be established in 2018, “we are trying to give companies, organizations, universities the competitive edge that they need. It’s only through innovation that you can bring about the organizational changes that can help companies stay ahead.”

The BC NDP was very critical of the BC Liberals’ jobs plan, claiming a significant amount of jobs are “precarious,” despite the province’s low unemployment rate.

When asked how the new, NDP government plans to raise wages, Ralston said the commission will help. Meanwhile, the government is reviewing how to implement a $15/hour minimum wage.

“I think we’re a compassionate society but we have to be hard-nosed on the business side to achieve what we want to achieve,” said Ralston.

According to the 2016 census, most of Richmond’s jobs (29 per cent) are in the sales and services sector.

Laser projectors that shine festive displays on houses must be aimed at solid surfaces and not towards the sky, as the beams can enter the cockpit of an aircraft and pose a risk to pilots.

Nav Canada said many people are surprised to learn that these popular holiday light kits can be as potentially dangerous as

other types of lasers. Consumers are asked to read the warning labels on the package and carefully follow the directions when setting up the display.

Connaught’s Chiu soars to bronze at Skate Challenge Mark Booth

e is not even a teenager yet and Wesley Chiu already has a reputation for clutch performances in his promising career.

The 12-year-old Connaught Skating Club member sat in 10th position following his short program at the recent 2018 Skate Canada Challenge in Pierrefonds, Que. That’s when Chiu made his move — skating a terrific free (long) program the next day that ranked second among the 22 entries from across the country.

The performance vaulted him all the way up into the bronze medal position, behind only B.C./Yukon teammate Aleksa Rakic and Ontario’s Alec Guinzbourg.

It was at the same event a year earlier where Chiu competed in Pre-Novice and went from 10th to the silver medal thanks to his free program.

“It was just like last year. My short wasn’t very good and I wanted to make up for it,” smiled the Grade 7 student at Richmond Christian. “I landed my (triple) loop and got bonus points for it.”

Chiu’s coach Keegan Murphy wasn’t surprised to see one of his top students make a monster move for the second straight year.

Chiu was recognized for his ability when he received B.C. Yukon’s Male Youth Promise Award.

Last summer, he was invited by Skate Canada to a national camp in Montreal exclusively for the top up-and-coming Novice skaters in the country.

“Wesley works really hard. There is no magic,” said Murphy. “The long program he did was good and I was very happy for him but I wasn’t in shock. It wasn’t any better than what he does

“That’s how he trains every day. I think that’s why he was able to pull that out because he knows very well with himself of what he is capable of.”

Unlike a year ago when Skate Challenge was the ultimate stage for Pre-Novice skaters, Chiu now moves onto the Canadian Championships, which just happens to be in Vancouver at UBC’s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Centre — Jan. 8-14.

Adding to the excitement of this year’s event is the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea being a month later.

Chiu will be in the same environment as the senior skaters who are trying to lock-up spots on Canada’s Olympic team. He also will be a medal contender among his own family and friends.

The Novice Men’s competition is slated for the first couple of days of the championships.

He is now back training at Minoru Arenas and working on cleaning up his short program.

“There were no major mistakes, just little things and everything (error) is so expensive in a short skate,” continued Murphy. “We have some strategy for his short at Nationals. He still has room to improve his free skate too and now he has a really good idea of where he is in the country.

I would think it’s very motivating because he knows it actually wasn’t even his best (and he still ended up third).”

Murphy concluded his own competitive career at the 2008 Nationals which also happened to be in Vancouver. Skating in your hometown can work against a skater if it takes him out of his usual routine for out-of-town competitions.

That’s what Chiu will be trying to avoid.

“You have to plan and create ways to make it feel like he is away at a competition,” added Murphy. I think at home you sometimes can be too relaxed. Wesley will be ready.”

9th annual Arno Cup welcomes more teams Graeme Wood

he 9th edition of the Arno Ekkert Memorial Cup ball hockey tournament in Richmond is set for three weekends this January.

Upwards of a dozen teams are set to compete, with registration still open, said tournament co-founder and organizer Allan Kliewer.

The Arno Cup is steeped in tradition and has become one of Richmond’s most endearing grassroots sporting events. It’s also some of the most competitive ball hockey you’ll find in the Lower Mainland.

It was founded following the death of Arnold Ekkert, a young man who attended Richmond Christian second-

ary school.

“When he passed away and I got the news I felt we needed to do something, because he was an incredible person. Everyone lost something when Arno died.

He was the type of person to have something to remember him by,” said Kliewer.

For nearly a decade the older Millenial crowd from Richmond Christian has invited all sorts of new teams into the tournament, held at Fraserview Mennonite Church. This year is no different and the tournament stands at 10 teams.

Given the group likes hockey, the question begs, why ball hockey in a gym, and not ice hockey?

“We played tournaments at school. It seemed like the tourneys were pretty popular;

it may have been a private school thing. Our friend group was into it a lot and it was easier to organize ball hockey in a gym; I didn’t want to get into renting ice surface,” explained Kliewer.

While the tournament is clearly for fun and a means of remembering Ekkert, even if many new teams never knew him, it is nevertheless very competitive.

“It is surprising to me how intense the game play can be; it’s risen so much since it started; the level of play is definitely quite impressive.

The teams that keep coming back over the years really appreciate that. And that’s the reason why I keep doing it; everyone appreciates it,” said Kliewer.

Teams comprise of up to 14 players, but only 10 can dress for a game, which is fouron-four action plus a goalie.

The six round robin games, plus playoffs, are played on weekends (Jan. 13, 20 and 27). Each game is 20 minutes running time, while playoff games are 30 minutes.

The tournament has strict rules on stick infractions, granted padding is limited for players’ extremities. Any such penalty is an automatic four

“We are firm on sportsmanship; we don’t allow any roughness or intimidation or shoving,” said Kliewer.

For the games, the gymnasium is turned into a makeshift ball hockey arena, as Kliewer and other volunteers set up boards in the corners

to provide better game flow.

There are also mesh nets to protect spectators. Equally impressive is the game experience, which has improved with investments over the years.

“We just invested in a digital scoreboard and flat screen TVs to display the scores,”

said Kliewer.

One of the biggest draws is the coveted championship and all-star trophies.

To get in on the action, Kliewer said the $350 team registration ends Dec. 23.

Season to remember for resilient Wildcats Mark Booth

A

season that began with guarded expectations concluded as the best-ever in the history of McMath senior girls field hockey.

The Wildcats capped their memorable campaign with a fifth place finish at last month’s B.C. “AAA” Championships. The hosts’ only defeats came at the hands of eventual winner (Handsworth) and runner-up (Kelowna). It was accomplished with the smallest roster (13) of the 16 participating teams and not a whole lot of experience either.

McMath concluded the memorable run with a win in a penalty shootout over West Vancouver.

Earlier in the day, the girls knocked off Fraser Valley champion South Delta 3-1.

“The fact this was considered as a rebuilding year for us made it even that much more special,” said head coach TJ Sander. “We have definitely had deeper teams in the past but when you look at just the 11 on the field at any given time and how they played as a team, it’s the best I have seen.”

The Wildcats’ roster featured players from all five grades and it took contributions from each one to achieve such a high finish. Even

getting through the regular season was no easy feat as often McMath began games shorthanded with players having other commitments.

What the Steveston school did have going for it was a pair of provincial team players to build around — Dakota Chan and Aish Sander. They both helped B.C.

win silver at last summer’s U18 nationals.

Chan, the Grade 12 captain, battled through an injury and showed her resilience in the wins over South Delta and West Van. Sander, the Grade 11 assistant captain, really stepped up her game when Chan was injured and

led the attack in goals and assists.

Both girls attracted interest from university coaches as well.

The lone other senior on the roster was Kate Schmidt. She could be counted on her for versatile play, whether it be at forward, midfield or in the back.

Samantha Trueman was another

standout Grade 11, anchoring the backline. Emma Fedoruk also provided terrific work as a defender, while Sarah Godfrey and Ellie Wan elevated their games to another level for provincials. The Grade 11s also included Veronica Surette who got stronger with each game and was counted on as a dependable player.

Grade 10 Lara Schmidt continued her scoring touch right through the tournament and Sabrina Fata always played with a strong work ethic.

Grade 9 Hope Chan elevated her play for the championships and continued her strong two-way play.

Grade 8 goalkeeper Abby Poger played beyond her years throughout the season. She was at her best in the shootout win over West Van where her aggressive style paved the way for her team’s win.

Isabella Schaefer gained some valuable experience and played with some great tenacity. She will be part of the Wildcats’ future moving forward.

Dakota Chan, Sander, Poger, Schmidt, Hope Chan and Godfrey all received player of the game awards.

The Wildcats earned a quarterfinal berth by finishing second in their pool group. It was highlighted by a win over Argyle. The girls also defeated Centennial.

VIJ FAMILY INSPIRES COMMUNITY TO GIVE TO RICHMOND HOSPITAL

ichmond’s Manmohan and Kusum Vij brought good news for Richmond Hospital and an inspiring message for the community.

The parents of internationally acclaimed chef Vikram Vij donated $100,000 to Richmond Hospital Foundation help fund a brand new state-of-the-art portable digital X-ray machine in Richmond Hospital’s Medical Imaging Department.

The new unit is faster and more accurate, providing greater clarity and safety while using lower doses of radiation. It replaces a unit that is more than 25 years old and at the end of

its lifespan.

“Medical imaging plays a crucial role in helping physicians treat a patient,” said Dr. Ian Wong, Head of Medical Imaging at Richmond Hospital.

“Sometimes having a picture is worth a thousand words in answering what the disease is that may be going on inside,” he said. “This machine will be used daily and is able to go to all areas of the hospital to obtain vital images and help doctors make a diagnosis.”

Noting that Richmond Hospital has many urgent needs, Manmohan Vij said that the community has a responsibility to give back. “Richmond

Manmohan and Kusum Vij were born in Amritsar in the Indian state of Punjab. Overseeing a wholesale textile company with his maternal grandfather in Bombay, Manmohan along with wife Kusum raised their two children, son Vikram and daughter Gauri, in India. The couple emigrated to Canada in

1994 and have been residents of Richmond since 1998.

As unprecedented population growth in Richmond surges exponentially and a booming seniors’ population places enormous demands on our hospital facilities and equipment, Dr. Wong thanked the Vij family for their generous donation to improve medical imaging for patients at Richmond Hospital each and every day. “This equipment is a wonderful gift for our department, but it’s actually a gift for the community as a whole,” he said.
