It’s a call I won’t forget.

“Hello, this is Const. (not quite sure of his name now) from the Richmond RCMP, are you the mother of ….”

For a nanosecond, the world stood still.

“Yes.”

“Well, he’s fine,” says the good constable. “In fact, I’m phoning to tell you your son made a good decision today.”

Oh, really. Not if you’re calling, I’m thinking.

But, yes, he actually did make a good decision. Of course, that was only after he’d made the really bad decision to attempt a crossing of the Fraser River at London Landing, on slippery wet logs, as he and his friend ventured to Shady Island. They were 12 years old at the time.

The “good” decision was deciding, part way out, to turn around and come back to shore.

Okay, I’ve told this story before, but, as my 90-year-old dad says (if actions speak louder than words) a good tale can’t be told too often.

My point here is about policing. The cop happened to be driving along Dyke Road when he saw the boys; he pulled over to have a friendly chat, generously focusing on the positive half of their decision-making process.

And then there was the time my daughter called 911 “by accident.” Again, an officer came out, had a friendly chat and even gave her a “positive ticket,” a pass to a local swimming pool or skating rink.

Since Supt. Ward Clapham left Richmond RCMP, I haven’t heard so much about these kind of outreach initiatives.

Granted, there is always talk about community policing, but Clapham seemed to put extra resources into fostering positives relationships, particularly with youth.

So, I was interested to learn about our local detachment’s current “Coffee with a Cop” initiative (see page 13), an invitation to anyone to join them for a cuppa and talk about anything from neighbourhood break-ins to how to join the force.

One of the complaints residents, and certainly city councillors, have about the Richmond detachment is that it attracts young recruits who no sooner figure out the lay of the land before they’re moving onto another jurisdiction.

In fact, this has been used as an argument in favour of replacing the RCMP with a local, independent police force, whose members would, presumably, be more invested in the community.

But regardless what policing model we use, the key is building relationships, making connections and having conversation. Certainly, that’s what I’ve found in journalism. While meetings matter, the best stories are usually found in the hallways — even washrooms.

Notice of Intention to Provide Assistance by Partnering Agreement The City of Richmond hereby gives notice that the City intends to provide assistance to the REGIONAL ANIMAL PROTECTION SOCIETY (the “Society”), pursuant to Section 21 of the Community Charter.

The City of Richmond and the Society will enter into a Partnering Agreement in the form of a “license” to allow the Society to provide the services of animal shelter operations and animal control services.

The Partnering Agreement is dated effective February 1, 2017 and has a term of two years with two mutual options to extend the term for a further three years if both options are exercised. The Society will base its operations on City owned land located at 12071 No. 5 Road, Richmond, British Columbia. The assistance includes certain benefits at reduced cost, the value to be provided during the term of the Partnering Agreement is estimated at $87,000 per year for each year of the term.

Kudos to city workers Dear Editor, It has become “fashionable” in some quarters to complain about city services and taxes etc., so let me share a recent experience.

The area around the municipal water meter installed at my home several years ago developed a problem, so I emailed Richmond engineering and public works, thinking it might be a leak or blockage of some kind. An hour later, an inspector knocked at my door to advise he would send a crew by. Within a day, a crew checked the me-

ter and concluded the problem was due to settling, and in less than a week, the meter housing had been raised and the surrounding bricks levelled!

The city employees were uniformly courteous, conscientious and well-informed.

Driving with entitlement Dear Editor, If the provincial coffers need some cash, all the government has to do is enforce speed limits. The people speeding on our roads have developed what appears to be some sort of entitlement issue.

Try driving Alderbridge sometime, between Garden City road and Shell Road.

Most of these speeders seem to think it’s an extension of the east/west connector and drive 80km in a 50km zone.

Or try Dyke Road between No. 2 Road and No. 5 Road. That’s become a fullblown Autobahn, a speedway alternative to Steveston Highway, I suppose. What

I say, use all means necessary to endorse the rules of the road on these goofs and remind them that driving is a privilege not a right.

In the meantime, walkers, joggers, cyclists, and other motorists beware. There are complete idiots out there with apparent entitlement rights.

Our city councillors have been much too timid at a time when bold steps are necessary to address the housing crisis. While the city is increasing the amount of affordable housing that developers must provide in new condo projects and considering ways to increase the amount of market rental housing, there are not enough of the two- and three-bedroom units that are most in demand by families. Property developers have been allowed to build too many of the one-bedroom condo units that are most in demand by investors, but often wind up sitting empty.

There should also be a requirement that the strata manager assumes responsibility for renting out, at market rates, all of these new units not occupied by the owner, or a relative of the owner. This can be made attractive to condo investors by having all rent revenue go into a common fund, from which expenses are deducted, and the investors then share in the profits according to the size of their unit. It doesn’t matter if an owner’s unit is temporarily vacant since the cost is shared by all the owners.

Unlike the Vancouver strategy of trying to track and penalize empty condo owners, this would encourage investors to help solve the housing crisis at no cost to themselves.

Although developers may be reluctant to try a new model, it’s time for our city councillors to take the initiative. Give them a push.

Build that tower Dear Editor,

One of the hallmarks of a government with integrity is its willingness to fulfill campaign promises.

Campaign promise fulfillment shows constituents that their politicians are truthful and in touch with what is reasonable and actionable. This last election cycle one promise struck a chord with many Richmond voters: the commitment to building a new acute care tower at Richmond Hospital.

Our community agrees that we are in dire need of a new hospital. The old acute care tower is 50 years old, too small for our current population, far short of meeting modern medical standards, and will likely collapse in only a moderate earthquake.

According to witnesses, Jay Greenwood, a Victoria-based contractor, was jumping from an elevated trampoline into a foam pit and broke his neck.

Greenwood’s co-worker Matthew Ball told the Richmond News he was saddened to hear of Greenwood’s death.

“That guy’s put so much food on my family’s table. He had a heart of gold. He was one of those guys who took the salt out of you,” said Ball, who was told of Greenwood’s death by Greenwood’s sister, Adrienne Greenwood, who confirmed her brother’s death in a Facebook post.

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed it took one man in critical condition from

Extreme Air Park to an area hospital Saturday evening. To date, the BC Coroners Service has not been able to confirm a death occurred. Richmond RCMP confirmed it attended an incident at a “leisure facility” in the 14000-block of Triangle Road where a 46-year-old man died of serious injury and cardiac arrest.

Bouzakis said there were three young workers at the facility at the time of the accident. No one appeared to display first aid qualifications nor did they attend to the lifeless body. Dremeneau said protocol is not to move a body with such severe injuries.

Tracey Trowborst, a Ladner resident, told the News her children were traumatized by the event and she said there doesn’t appear to be enough supervision at the facility.

Police say they are investigating the death.

Witness Charlie Bouzakis stated on Facebook that his children are dealing with having to witness an “unbelievable, horrible” event. And he and others are questioning the response of staff at the facility, located on Triangle Road.

“Staff had no idea what to do and I called 911,” claimed eyewitness Karm Layegh on Facebook.

The News has contacted the company for comment but no one has responded. A man named Austin Dremeneau replied online to

Bouzakis, appearing to speak on behalf of Extreme Air Park and claiming medical emergency protocol was followed.

But whatever that protocol may be, several witnesses claim it was insufficient.

Two Safeway locations in Richmond are slated to permanently close if parent company Sobeys cannot reach an agreement with its workers’ union to convert them into FreshCo discount stores.

Regardless of the outcome, it appears the big red “S” at Blundell Centre and Richlea Square Shopping Centre will come down on May 5.

“This is never an easy decision that we have to make,” said Sobeys spokesperson Jacquelin Corrado, confirming the food giant, owned

by Empire Co., intends to close 10 Lower Mainland Safeways.

UFCW (United Food and

Commercial Workers) 1518 president Ivan Lampright said Tuesday it is “an insult and an outrage.”

Lampright said if all 10 stores close, hundreds of people will lose their jobs.

And hundreds more will be displaced through a transfer process, said Lampright, via a news release.

“That won’t fly in bargaining, though. We told the company that we need all of the information on decisions they’ve made that will impact our members. It’s time to stop the games and start respectful negotiations.”

The union stated that if Sobeys gets “favourable terms and conditions” for its FreshCo stores it may reopen five of the 10 stores, including the two Richmond locations.

working with other UFCW locals and UFCW Canada to fight back against Sobeys’ attempt to bring in poverty wages instead of living wages,” stated a news release.

Corrado said negotiations have not begun and thus couldn’t confirm if the company seeks lesser wages and benefits for FreshCo. She noted that, if FreshCo reopens, renovations will be done at both locations and, during that time, the pharmacies will remain open for customers.

Lampright pinned the closures on Sobeys’ mismanagement of the Safeway stores, since being purchased in 2013.

Corrado noted: “It hasn’t been a secret that our Safeway locations have struggled.”

An elderly woman has become the first road-related fatality in Richmond in 2018.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Richmond RCMP responded to the area of No. 1 and Tucker roads –

just south of Westminster Highway — for a serious pedestrian collision.

A man wielding a rifle and concealed by a balaclava stormed into the Pioneer’s Pub lasst Thursday evening and attacked a suspected drug dealer, according to an eyewitness account.

The targeted incident has led to two arrests, according to Richmond RCMP. A witness told the Richmond News the gunman did not fire any shots but proceeded to target one patron and then seriously assaulted him with his weapon.

Prior to the assault, just before 8 p.m., it had been a familyfriendly affair inside the “Pi” for a memorial, according to several accounts on social media.

When the gunman entered, one man yelled out, “he’s got a gun,” and patrons scrambled to the floor.

The witness said they fled via the back kitchen door. It was said amongst some patrons that the victim may have been involved in drug dealing and the apparent attack appears to be a message being sent amongst gang rivals.

The witness said an ambulance arrived to tend to the victim after being struck multiple times in the head with the rifle.

Richmond RCMP issued a statement Friday afternoon, indicating the victim and suspects are known to police.

“A 19-year-old male and a 22-year-old male (were taken into) custody in Richmond. The crime vehicle has been seized awaiting further analysis and investigation. The victim was transported to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. He has not been cooperative with investigators,” stated police.

Police said they were able to catch the suspects in Vancouver, at Ross Street and Marine Drive, after issuing a broadcast to neighbouring police agencies.

The gunman fled in a light-coloured vehicle, with several other people. Vancouver Police located it around 9 p.m.

Pioneer Pub is located at Broadmoor shopping centre at No. 3 and Williams roads. Police said they were initially told that shots were fired and there were hostages. This resulted in the pub being swarmed by at least a dozen police cars.

“Our investigators were able to confirm that no shots were fired, nor were any hostages involved,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“These types of incidents are always treated very seriously and illustrate the dynamic and fluid circumstances that police must contend with on a daily basis. Further, it highlights the importance of accurate information.”

Stigma is users’ biggest hurdle Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

Since January, 2016, 34 people have died of illicit drug overdoses in Richmond — well over the 25 who died in the previous 10 years combined. Last year, 20 families buried a loved one.

Now, Richmond Addictions Services Society (RASS) is hoping to spark an ongoing, cross-cultural conversation in the city over drug addiction and how to tackle the overdose death crisis.

Overcoming stigma will be one of the first — and perhaps most difficult — hurdles, said Rick Dubras, RASS executive director.

On Feb. 3, he’s inviting the public to Brighouse library for a community event that includes discussions with public health officials, first responders, recovering addicts and their family members.

“We need to understand addiction, understand why people choose drugs; that’s what’s getting lost in media coverage,” he said.

While stigma against drug users is prevalent in most places, Dubras said there appears to be added pressures placed on the city’s Asian newcomers, who may develop mental health problems and/or drug addiction.

According to 2016 census data, there are 15,245 “recent immigrants” in Richmond, meaning they arrived since 2011. Of those, 14,165 came from Asia.

Dubras wants to address any and all stigma and he hopes community leaders begin an honest, cross-cultural conversation about

what the problem is in Richmond and how it can be addressed.

The executive director of Richmond Addictions Services Society is hosting a community event Feb. 3, featuring health professionals, first responders and recovering drug addicts and their families.

“People are dying in Richmond because of overdose,” said Dubras.

“People generally minimize the impact of substance abuse and mental health in Richmond. Much of that is because of stigma and I think it’s because of our mix, our diversity.

We’ve got people who don’t know where to go for help. They don’t realize they can reach out for help and receive non-judgmental, compassionate care. And many people are ashamed that their family members are affected by substance abuse. That’s our biggest barrier.”

And it’s not about throwing money at the issue, said Dubras, adding that almost 75 per cent of the population are ESL. “This is about figuring out, from our community, what are the issues, what are the barriers. Richmond is different. You have to understand the population, you have to understand the culture.”

According to Coun. Chak Au, the Chinese community “tends to have a more conservative view” on drug use.

Vancouver community activist Melody Ma has noted public discourse needs to address “the predisposed Asian cultural stigma of drug users.”

She wrote in a column to the Vancouver Sun this month that drug users are viewed in China as “morally deficient.”

Dubras said “there is no cookie cutter solution” and so a community like Richmond needs to first understand its own culture(s).

Tsunami worries overstated Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

Richmond residents need not worry about a significant tsunami striking Lulu and Sea islands.

While a large earthquake off the coast of Alaska Tuesday morning resulted in tsunami warnings for parts of the West Coast, it did not result in such alarms for Richmond.

That’s because scientific studies and wave modelling have shown even the largest mega earthquakes along the Cascadia subduction zone, off the west coast of Vancouver Island, will not result in large waves striking Richmond.

“Any tsunami generated in the open Pacific is of little threat to Vancouver, Richmond or Delta areas,” said University of B.C. oceanographer Dr. Susan Allen.

The City of Richmond commissioned a study

by Simon Fraser University in 2005 on the matter. It found that there is no geological evidence of a significant tsunami hitting Richmond in the last 4,000 years despite there being numerous nearby mega quakes.

“There’s a general public perception that Richmond is at a heightened risk because of its lower elevation and water surroundings but this is not actually the case,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

Allen concurred with the study, which notes

any large tsunami would dissipate through the Juan de Fuca Strait as it wraps around the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Furthermore, Sturgeon Bank and the Fraser River Delta tidal flats would further lessen a wave’s energy. Models show any wave reaching the West Dyke would be about 0.5 metres high, well within the dyke’s ability to block water from flowing inland.

The most significant tsunami could actually occur from a landslide off Galiano Island.

Still, an 18-metre wave would be reduced to two metres by the time it hit the dyke, posing “no significant flood risk,” according to the study by Dr. John Clague and Dr. Ian Hutchinson.

Of course, such a tsunami will strengthen as Sturgeon Bank and the tidal flats are further slowly eroded by dredging operations and sea level rise.

“No question, the higher sea levels get, the more susceptible Richmond will be to all water hazards,” said Allen.

As well, if a wave hits during high tide, dykes become more vulnerable, she said.

Fancy a coffee with a cop?

If you’ve ever wanted to approach a police officer with a question, but were too afraid to ask, here’s your chance.

Starting next week, Mounties at Richmond RCMP will kick off a city-wide series aimed at getting to better know our communities and the people that live in them.

It’s hoped “Coffee with a Cop,” as it’s being called, will encourage residents to get out and have an informal chat with the officers serving their community, thus developing trust via more face-to-face interactions.

It all begins next Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Hamilton Community Centre from 1 to 2:30 p.m., where members of the RCMP detachment will invite locals to have a cup of coffee with them and ask them, well, just about anything.

“The questions can be pretty broad, it doesn’t have to be anything specific,” explained Sgt. Ted Lewko, of Richmond RCMP Client Services, whose idea was to host Coffee with a Cop in Richmond.

“It can be about issues in their neighbourhood, or maybe they’re interested in joining the police; it can be a very open-ended, one-on-one chat.”

The idea has been around in other jurisdictions in North America for some time, explained Lewko, who has worked in Richmond for 18 months.

“When I was in Surrey, I did it there; it’s a great chance for the public to get to meet the police and ask questions,” he added.

“The ones I went to (in Surrey), were in coffee shops, and they were pretty packed.

Some areas in Richmond might not have a coffee shop, so we might have it in a community centre.”

Asked if they’re thinking of hosting Bubble Tea with a Cop, given Richmond’s now majority ethnic Chinese population, Lewko said, “You never know, we will see how it goes.”

Lewko said, as well as himself and other members from community relations, he expects crime prevention officers to be in attendance.

“Even if it’s just to ask us what it’s like to be a police officer. We just really want to put a face to us. The uniform and the car can be really hard to see past sometimes.

“We want to make it a good city and want that good connectedness and we want people to see us in a more casual setting, as

opposed to seeing us in a moment of crisis.”

Communication with certain communities in Richmond has been raised as an issue in the past by officers, especially in some predominantly ethnic Chinese neighbourhoods, where trust of authority can be limited.

“If you make that personal connection, they may, down the line, be more open to working with the police,” acknowledged Lewko.

“It will definitely break down barriers, but not just with the Chinese community; it can be due to age, race, any barrier that we can break down is good.”

“If all you can afford is to live so far from work and then you slap on a distancebased charge, you’re gonna have a fairness, or social justice problem,” he argued.

For that reason, some, such as Thom, question the very nature of mobility pricing and the user-pay model, which is a regressive tax — a concept that has become more prominent in B.C. with the reduction in income and corporate taxes, according to the Centre for Policy Alternatives.

“Even those who move out to the Fraser Valley are finding that it’s not as affordable as it used to be. They have been pushed further out there to afford housing, yet they would be charged the most for per kilometre when commuting to Vancouver to make a living. That’s just not fair at all,” said Thom.

But that argument doesn’t wash entirely with Coun. Ken Johnston, owner of Novex delivery services, who says that while he has hesitations about distance-based charges, particularly for businesses, he believes, “those who use the services (roads) should pay for them.”

Likewise, Steve Seaborn, a Richmond-based home renovator, told the News he would have to pass on extra mobility charges to his clients, as a business expense.

What both Yan and Richmond politicians agree on, however, are the perils of congestion point charges.

“A (congestion) point model inherently, arguably, reknits traffic into a place where traffic may not be, in avoidance of a charge, so I think that type of system is fraught.”

Moreover, congestion point charges may impact Richmond commuters the greatest, given they are surrounded by bridges and a tunnel with bumper-to-bumper traffic, as noted by Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

Yan said mobility pricing will inherently tie into housing costs and overall affordability.

Does one stay in Richmond, with its high housing costs, and have a short (cheaper) commute or move elsewhere in the region, with cheaper housing, but a long (expensive) commute.

In Richmond, people may choose to live in a smaller condo near a Canada Line station.

But “housing around transit is now at a premium,” said Yan. Besides, putting housing where transit is one thing, but people need to be near jobs.

In Richmond, there has been emphasis on building condos in City Centre. But if the jobs aren’t there as well, commuters will face more road pricing or transit charges, even without crossing the Fraser River.

Another court date and another month has passed for the family of cyclist Brad Dean, seeking justice over his death.

Michael Wing Sing Fan was, once more, due to appear at Richmond Provincial Court on Tuesday, charged with driving with undue care and attention after his car allegedly smashed head-on into 33-year-old Dean’s cycling group in east Richmond in November 2016.

Forecasts call for snowflakes, and pie flakes.

However, as was the case in December last year – when Dean’s family, including his wife and baby daughter, packed the small courtroom – the matter was adjourned due to Fan’s lawyer needing more time to review the charge.

As of Tuesday morning, a new court date was still to be set. Back in December, family and close friends of Dean had waited 13 months for Fan to appear in court and it was over in 60 seconds.

You don’t want to bite the hand that feeds you, but you don’t want it to slap you in the face, either.

As long as Ruth Taverner can remember, volunteers at Richmond Family Place on Ash Street have spent several hours — mostly after weekends and holidays — cleaning up the mess left behind from would-be benefactors.

Most of the time, the problem begins with items of furniture, which Family Place doesn’t accept, before it degenerates due to homeless people ransacking.

But after the holidays, the chaos left behind was so bad Taverner said the organization is considering removing its donation bin, which sits next to a Big Brothers bin.

“We get about $3,000 a year to have the Big Brothers

opposed to donated.

“What possible use could we have for this?” added Taverner, pointing to the garbage left Monday morning.

“The stuff, even if we can use it, ends up in the dirt or all wet with rain and it becomes totally useless for us.

Taverner said they squeeze as much of it as they can into the charity’s garbage bins.

“The city has been very good at sending a truck to pick up stuff, but they can’t always come right away.”

Richmond Chamber unites business support for new Acute Care Tower Early this past Tuesday communities on the coast of B.C. awoke to the news that a major earthquake had struck southern Alaska and a tsunami warning was in effect. As communities in Esquimalt, Queen Charlotte City, Tofino and Ucluelet heeded alerts to evacuate, it’s a reminder here at home that we live on borrowed time when it comes to the seismic stability of the original hospital tower at Richmond Hospital that serves our own community.

Now more than 50 years old, the original tower meets only 17% of today’s seismic standards and is at risk of collapse even in a moderate earthquake of 5.0 to 5.9 on the Richter scale. Half of the hospital beds and all of our operating rooms are at risk. The tower is old and deficient. It cannot meet the needs of our growing population and needs to be replaced now.

Over the past year we have been heartened to see Richmond united like never before as more and more champions step forward to speak with one voice about the urgent need for a new Acute Care Tower.

As we await news of the provincial budget in February and remain very optimistic that there will be funding for a new Acute Care Tower, we are bolstered by the momentum we are witnessing in our community.

Recently, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce has taken a leadership role to bring together the voice of the business community, representing over 100,000 employees who work in Richmond and may require care, often in an emergency situation.

Rob Akimow is the Chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and explains why they have taken up this issue: “Health care affects every one of us.

Richmond has over 218,000 residents.

Over 24 million now travel through Richmond via YVR every year and the hospital services our neighbours in South Vancouver and South Delta as well.”

“With Richmond’s unique geography, an island city that is home to the Vancouver International Airport and Port of Vancouver operations, Richmond Hospital will be a much needed piece of infrastructure in the event of a disaster.”

“Current infrastructure and systems at Richmond Hospital are rated at 79% deficient. A rating of 30% deficient for building standards is considered ‘poor.’”

“Richmond has the fastest growing seniors’ population in the province and we have less than half the beds per capita than the B.C. average. It’s clear we can’t afford to fall further behind.” Akimow concludes, “The Richmond Hospital staff does an amazing job with what they have to work with, but the fact is the time has come for the necessary improvements to be made to bring our community the service levels that are appropriate.”

The giant, three-year-old pooch weighs in at a whopping 150 pounds and a body length of 1.6 metres — not including his equally long tail.

But despite his huge size, his temper is mild.

In fact, he tends to be very submissive to other dogs and people.

“When he first arrived, he was only 28 pounds, and we never thought he could grow this big,” said Loki Cheung, who owns Tyson, along with Nyx Li. “We heard his dad weighed 150 pounds, but we had no idea what 150 pounds means for a dog.”

Tyson, who came directly from a breeder in Alaska, consumes more than three pounds of raw meat a day, plus an extra bowl of dog food and treats.

“Before, he was only eating dog food, but regular dog food contains too much fibre and would make him poop five to six times a day,” said Cheung.

Nyx Li, one of the owners of Tyson, a 150-pound Alaskan Malamute.

“His stool would totally fill up three poop bags. Other people in the dog park would laugh when they saw us collecting all the poop on the ground.”

Having such a large dog has also led to some bizarre events at home, such as the time a guest fell through a cavernous hole in the couch.

“I’m excited to go home and my family will get to see my work. It will be nice for them to come and see some of the things that I’m doing,” said Nguyen.

A classic Canadian love story will be reinterpreted on-stage at Gateway Theatre by artists from Toronto, who created the sold-out hit last season.

The struggles the young people are going through in the story really stick out to her.

Salt-Water Moon, written by David French 34 years ago, is set in a village in Newfoundland in 1926, when young people are abandoning their roots for a new life in the big city.

“They are both premature and going through a lot of struggles for such young individuals, which has a lot to do with what keeps them apart,” explained Nguyen.

But 18-year-old Jacob Mercer returns home from Toronto to win back his former love, Mary Snow, who he abruptly left more than a year ago.

The former lovers meet under the moon-lit sky to confront their past choices and fall in love again.

“With just two actors and only a few physical elements, the audience will be transported to the place envisioned in David French’s timeless tale; Newfoundland under a starfilled sky,” said Ravi Jain, director of the play and a founding member of Toronto’s Why Not Theatre.

The show is traditionally done by two actors in a realistic setting. However, Jain takes away all the settings on the stage, only leaving candles, with an on-stage narrator. “It’s

Now we’re doing it in new way that should help the audience see that there are more ways to look at our history,” said Jain.

Although many actors have played the roles in the famous Canadian play, the current show is the first time actors “who are not white” are cast in the old Canadian play, according to Jain.

“The narrator provides a language that can describe the world it takes place in and help the audience to imagine the house, and the costumes the characters are wearing…” he added.

“I did it on purpose...traditionally, people with colour are not able to play these roles because of the time it was written,” said Jain.

Since Tyson is a big guy, he requires a lot of exercise to burn his energy.

“He needs minimum two hours of exercise daily. If he doesn’t exercise enough, he would lay on the floor without moving and eating, looking like he is depressed.”

That means lots of dog park visits for the friendly pooch, plus swims at the dog beach at least three times a week.

“We are students here and our

parents are in other countries,” said Cheung. “Though it takes us a lot of time to take good care of Tyson, in general, we feel happier to have his companionship. We actually got healthier too, as we get to walk around for a minimum of two hours every day. This is a better activity compared to eating out or going drinking.”

Though raising Tyson is a lot of fun, Cheung and his girlfriend sometimes feel overwhelmed with the public’s enthusiasm towards him.

“One thing that bothers us a lot is that many people on the street want to get a picture with him, especially if one person starts to take pictures, other people follow along.”

A small but historic post office, inside the Steveston Museum building, is in peril of closing this May after operator Tourism Richmond decided to pull up its stakes and focus solely on the visitor centre.

And as it stands, taxpayers will be asked by the Steveston Historical Society to prop up the postal operation while a new business model is crafted.

A contract with Canada Post to operate the post office is held by the society, which then subcontracted to Tourism Richmond.

But Tourism Richmond CEO Bruce Okabe says operating a post office is not part of his organization’s mandate, hence he has given the society notice that Tourism Richmond will no longer provide postal staff past April 30.

Society president Linda Barnes says about $50,000 is needed by the society to start anew, including creating a retail enterprise that should offset future operating costs.

To date, Barnes said Tourism Richmond and the City of Richmond have offered $10,000 each. Barnes, a former long-time city councillor, expects the society to make a pitch to city council soon.

Okabe added the postal services break even, roughly, but the staff are additional costs. Tourism Richmond has sold Stevestonrelated merchandise at the post office.

The post office started operating out of the museum building in 1979, when the society took over its operations. The post office at this location is a legacy of Steveston’s first post office in the village.

“We celebrated the 125th birthday of the post office in 2015. It’s been in Steveston, not necessarily at that site, for 127 years now,” said Barnes.

“Having a post office allowed us to become a township. That’s where Steveston is tied to this post office. There is another outlet (Super Grocer) but as far as the historic significance goes, this is the important one.

“If this post office closes down, I believe we lose that historic focal point.

“And it’s a service to the community. Numerous seniors use the post office,” said Barnes.

Robbie Burns is a family affair

And the work of Burns has influenced many a great human being, such as musician Bob Dylan, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln and author John Steinbeck.

The last weekend in January always gets circled early on Ian MacLeod’s calendar.

Burns’ short, but colourful, 37 years of life on the planet are remembered around the world on or about Jan. 25, with Burns “Suppers,” “Dinners” or “Nights,” usually accompanied by recitals of Burns’ poetry, a ceremonial haggis (traditional Scots dish), highland dancing and the aforementioned addresses, such as the ones being performed by the MacLeods.

This year, however, MacLeod — an aficionado of his Scottish cultural roots — has a very special reason to highlight the days surrounding Jan. 25.

Just like every other year, MacLeod will be centre stage at the annual, Clan MacLeod Society Robbie Burns Dinner, making the traditional speeches of the opening Address to the Haggis and The Immortal Memory to mark the birth of Scotland’s world famous poet.

MacLeod – who is fifth-generation Canadian, but considers his heritage as “Highland Scottish” – has twice attended the Clan MacLeod’s world gathering on the Isle of Skye, held every four years. And although his Scottish parents met in Trinidad and Tobago, he’s proud of his deep Gaelic and Cape Breton roots.

But for the first time, on Sunday, Jan. 28 at Richmond Curling Club, he will be joined in the order of proceedings by his daughter, Melanie Bolton, 40, and granddaughter Tayler, 11, who will be doing a joint version of The Response to the Toast to the Lassies, a more off-the-cuff speech, usually at the end of the event.

He is, however, eager to encourage the younger generations to get involved, with an apparent decline worldwide in membership among Scottish historical organizations.

Suffice to say, MacLeod will be a very proud father and grandfather on Sunday afternoon.

“All of the Scottish societies across Canada are having trouble getting people in,” said MacLeod.

“This is the first time they’ve taken this role and, obviously, the first time we’ve all done it together, so it will be pretty special,” said MacLeod, director of the local Clan MacLeod society and the organization’s former, national president.

“It’s great to see younger people trying to keep the tradition going, but when they’re your family and are across three generations, it’s extra special. It gives me immense pride.”

For the uninitiated, Burns, an 18th century taxman-turnedpoet, is one of Scotland’s most famous exports, most notably

in global circles as the author of the New Year’s song Auld Lang Syne.

“There has been resurgence in numbers off and on over the years, such as in the 1980s, when the movie Highlander came out, followed by a TV show of the same name. But it’s gone down again.”

And the big question, do you eat haggis?

“No,” laughed MacLeod.

“For two reasons: It’s not regularly available and it’s not something my wife would usually be interested in.”

n Jan. 10, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce put out a call for local businesses and organizations to support them in a call for Premier Horgan to fulTl this election commitment, and include the funding for the new acute care tower at Richmond Hospital in next month’s budget.

Following up to Premier Horgan’s election commitment that “a BC NDP government would commit to building the new acute care tower and we will build it on the fastest possible timeline”, the business organization is hopeful that the Richmond hospital will not be left out of the budget.

Closing yesterday, the campaign garnered more than 100 signatures of local business owners and senior managers, collectively representing

more than 10,000 Richmond employees.

Those employees, and more than 218,000 residents, including visitors through YVR and neighbours in South Delta and South Vancouver are served by the Richmond Hospital.

The original tower now meets only 17 per cent of seismic code, putting all eight operating rooms and over half of the beds at severe risk in the case of a moderate earthquake.

Furthermore, with the fastest growing seniors population in British Columbia, Richmond’s hospital has less than half the provincial average of available beds.

The Richmond Chamber of Commerce will be sending their letter to Premier Horgan and his cabinet on Monday, Jan. 29.

Richmond children have proven their excellence in math on an international stage.

Six students at UCMAS Richmond, a math program focusing on developing children’s brains, returned with trophies from the 22nd UCMAS Abacus & Mental Arithmetic International Competition in Malaysia.

Students competed with more than 2,200 participants from 40 counties by answering math questions in different categories. For example, in one contest, students answered 200 math problems in eight minutes.

Nine-year-old Petra Dmitrovic won second place in the world in the “listening competition,” in which he had to calculate up to 35 rows of three-digit numbers.

Classes include abacus training, mental training, speed training, listen-and-calculate training and read-and-calculate training.

“We teach children visualiza-

“It improves their concentration, their focus and time-management skills, because every activity they do, they have to do it in a certain time.

“It also improves their observational analytical skills, so they are able to become better listeners and visualizers.

“Every child can learn this. You don’t have to be an expert and you don’t have to do well in math. Everyone can benefit (from practising math) in some way,” he said.

Agri products introduced to China Daisy Xiong RICHMOND NEWS

A Richmond-based business group is calling for companies to join a trip to Hong Kong to introduce Canadian agricultural products to Asian markets.

North American Investment Association (NAIA), at 8888 Odlin Crescent, is authorized to be the Canadian representative at the First Belt & Road International Food Expo.

A number of Richmond companies, including Jingyin North America Enterprise Ltd., Coast Mountain E-commerce Corp. and Huijing Foods are already on the list, which will bring local products such as dried blueberries, maple syrup, seafood, jams and ice wine to the international platform.

The food expo will take place in Hong Kong from June 27 to 29, when about 1,200 companies from more than 40 countries will showcase their brands and food products to purchasing agents from around the world, according to Amy Huang, NAIA president and owner of Huijing Foods.

“We hope, by showcasing Canadian products and making connections with business people in Asia and other areas face-to-face, more local companies can open up new markets and businesses,” said Huang.

Coun. Bill McNulty said it’s a good idea this organization is able to take it on itself, to “encourage the economy of B.C. and Richmond, by going to look for new markets, new ideas...and bring them back here to Richmond...without spending taxpayers’ money.”

The exhibition will include five halls displaying produce from different categories, and there will be business-matching events and summits focusing on the opportunities offered to businesses by “the Belt & Road” initiative, which was launched by the Chinese government in 2013 to push for a transnational economic belt in Eurasia.

Canadian companies will mainly focus on displaying food products, according to Huang.

“Canada is one of the largest agricultural producers in the world, and its products have a very high reputation in Asia,” said Huang.

“Now a middle class is growing in China, and there is big

Huang understands that some Canadian companies may feel nervous about entering the Chinese market, due to the lack of connections and concerns over government polices, which can change dramatically with short notice.

“That’s why we are here; we will provide all the support and information they need,” said Huang.

“And for the expo, NAIA will help businesses ship all the products there, book accommodation and send applications.”

The non-profit charitable organization will hold its fifth annual Creating Community Champions Gala at the Minoru Boulevard establishment on Friday, Feb. 16.

Six years ago grants were no more than $150 and there were actually a few months when no funds were available until a credit union stepped up with a donation.

“All of our team really looks forward to it. It almost gives you a sense of purpose that you can get behind one great charity like that,” added Collinge. “It’s a great event

for us. We all look forward to it and working with Bob and everyone has been absolutely fantastic. We have great relationship.

“It’s neat when you can get 100 percent behind one thing where you make a difference.”

Jackson is just grateful his sports council colleague and friend started the ball rolling five years ago to form a terrific partnership.

“It takes a community to raise a child and these people have been tremendous contributors in helping us do that,” said Jackson.

If it was a dress rehearsal for next month’s Lower Mainland “AAA” Championships then the McMath Wildcats have plenty to be excited about.

The defending champions rode a blazing start to a dominating 83-45 victory over the Argyle Pipers in Saturday’s senior girls title game at Steveston-London’s Bob Carkner Memorial Classic.

It was the same two teams that squared off in last year’s Crehan Cup Mainland final which saw the North Vancouver school prevail. They both will be among the favourites again, along with Carson Graham, New West and Lord Byng, in just a few weeks from now.

It was a tremendous start to 2018 for Chris Crisologo in Argentina. The Richmond golfer captured the South American Amateur in Buenos Aires. The 21-year-old took control of the tournament thanks to a sizzling 8-under 64 in the second round and went on to post a four-shot victory against an impressive field that featured a number of big name players from the NCAA Division One level. Chris is in his senior year at Simon Fraser University. He has five collegiate wins and in 2017 was named a First Team All-American and Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Last fall, he was the youngest member named to Golf Canada’s 2018 national team. The Richmond News is proud to recognize Chris as athlete of the month for January.
