If you live or work in Richmond long enough, you’ll hear it many, many times.

The all too often utterances of how “more bridges need to be built” across cultures in the city and we need to be a “more inclusive” society.

The latter of which is my personal favourite and one which comes with stunning regularity, as predictable as the snow geese camping on our school playing fields and the cherry blossoms blooming at Garry Point Park.

What is rare, however, is someone taking ownership of the cultural catchphrases and actually putting their words into action for the good of the community they call home.

Next week, our city will lose one such person — at least in an official capacity — when Henry Beh retires after 29 years of leading the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS).

For almost three decades, Beh and his small team at RCCS have quietly, but assuredly, worked away in the background in Richmond, helping mainly Chinese immigrants settle into their new lives in Canada through advice, advocacy and social programming.

But what they’ve also been doing is educating each and every single one of their 1,000 plus-strong membership to learn as much about the local and Canadian culture as possible, as well as respecting and learning English whenever possible.

In his final interview as the RCCS’ executive director (page 12), Beh stuck his neck out a little, indicating that the more recent wave of immigrants from mainland China are not making as much of an effort to integrate into mainstream life in Canada as much as, perhaps, his generation did.

When a person not of Chinese ethnicity says such a thing, it’s usually dismissed as jealousy, fear and, ultimately, racism.

When Malaysian-raised, Mandarin- and Cantonese-speaking Beh says it, maybe it’s time to take notice.

As an immigrant myself of more than 10 years, I, too, have had to make some changes to integrate into the society which I now call home.

Granted, coming from Scotland, there weren’t many visible or audible barriers, such as language — although some colleagues and soccer teammates over the years may beg to differ on the latter.

Although speaking English, there were significant cultural adjustments I had to make — and was quite happy and willing to do so — to “fit in” with my new neighbours, social circle and work environment.

I learned very quickly, for example, to be more discerning about the timing of cracking jokes in the office and when to say it to myself first, realizing that my Canadian workplace was a little more sensitive than the UK.

Suffice to say, when immigrating to a new country with a markedly different culture, I felt I had a duty to, at the very least, recognize the differences, respect them and put them ahead of my own preferences.

Henry Beh was different and the more of his ilk that rise to the top, the better Richmond will be — for everyone.

I voted to have English on signs as one of our bylaws. I believe if you run a business, you should communicate in a language that we all understand. I think we all understand that we use a regular numbering system and not, say, Roman numerals to put down your phone number and address.

I think it should. There should be at least two languages, because the official languages here are English and French. They only write Chinese and non-Chinese people can’t understand it, even if they want to. Two-language signs will attend to more customers, and the business will be better.

I agree, but I think there shouldn’t be English-only signs, either. It’s best if English shops also include Chinese on signs, so we Chinese can read them better. I don’t understand English, so I’m too afraid to go inside. It will only do good for their business.

I think because there is a high population of Chinese and Asian cultures here, why shouldn’t they be allowed to have their own signs? If people who don’t understand Chinese want to know what it means, we should go and look, and find out ourselves.

I think it creates a split in the community, especially when there is a sign completely cutting off an entire sector of people in the city.

Give the good drivers a break

Readers divided on Yap Dear Editor,

The Editor,

I am a regular Richmond News reader and supporter and, until now, have not written a letter to the editor.

If, indeed, there are 900 car crashes each day in this province, surely then the driver training must be at fault? Perhaps someone should be giving driving lessons to those instructors?

However, I am disappointed in your Feb. 15 edition.

For reasons unknown, you have chosen to inflict a twopronged attack on MLA John Yap.

In Richmond, you take your life in your hands each day you take your car out on the roads.

The seemingly coordinated column by the editor and the news story further inside the paper cast dishonour on Yap.

No one seems to know that they have an indicator, and certainly the speed limits are a joke.

In my view, the reference to “Quick Wins” was intended for that ill-fated activity only and not as a personal overall perspective and certainly does not reflect the man. I, therefore, consider your emphasis to be completely biased, unfair and unjust.

If you happen to be doing the speed limit, and this does not just apply to Steveston Highway, you are passed by just about every other car on the road.

Indicating left and turning right is almost a daily occurrence and I am getting extremely annoyed by this habit.

As a retired member of the Canadian Forces, I met Mr. Yap at events for Chinese Canadian Vets. He unreservedly supported them and their activities and continues to this day, even though only one of them resides in his riding and can vote for him.

I think that B.C. Attorney Genral David Eby should also be giving those of us who haven’t had an accident in years a break with ICBC insurance, as well as charging more to those who own these very expensive cars.

Mr. Yap has served the Richmond-Steveston constituency well for 13 years and has been its biggest supporter. I have seen him in private, domestic and public situations and I have never seen any sign of bias toward any minority or disadvantaged group.

If they can afford these cars, they can also afford to pay more insurance, especially when they have an accident.

I consider Mr. Yap to be a dedicated, fair, honest, publicminded individual who, by his actions, deserves support, not criticism.

Please listen to those of us who take care and pay attention when driving.

But what is more shocking is to realize that Yap and the BC Liberals are not alone in using government benefits to reward friends and punish enemies — all parties do it.

Why? Because of the voting system!

Under the current first-past-the-post voting system, one-party, majority governments receive 100 per cent of the power on 40 per cent of the vote.

Most votes have no impact on the election outcome. There is no incentive for politicians to show any concern for those who do not vote for them.

In contrast, under proportional representation, all votes count. That, and that alone, will change the behaviour of governments and local MLAs. In November, British Columbians can power-up their vote and put themselves in the driver’s seat.

No wonder every last BC Liberal MLA and party insider is vehemently opposed to proportional representation.

In November’s referendum remember Yap and vote “yes.”

Chinese business owner wants English In June, city council came close to mandating 50 per cent English on all regulated business signs in Richmond, via an enforceable bylaw, only to later change their minds.

“The legal challenge of a bylaw is critical,” said Au.

A Chinese-speaking business owner, who inadvertently stumbled into an ongoing language debate in Richmond, says city council should implement a bylaw requiring English on signs.

That legal challenge includes the possibility of the city being challenged under the Charter of Rights.

Last week, Hong Guang Zhang erected a Chinese-only business sign at his art and ceramics store on No. 3 Road, in the sightlines of Richmond City Hall.

But according to legal advice obtained by the city, such a bylaw requiring English on signs could be justified if non-English signage is detrimental to the community.

Regardless of language, the sign was illegal, because he hadn’t acquired a permit, as it was erected prior to obtaining a business licence.

Starchuk maintains foreign language signage (de facto Chinese-only signage) sows discord in the community.

Not so, said Johnston. “I think we have harmony in the community at this point..., that’s what I believe,” he said.

When residents complained publicly about the sign, City of Richmond officials fined Zhang $400 for having no permit.

Had Zhang acquired the licence before erecting the sign, he would have been informed that a municipal policy encourages half English on all signs requiring permits.

While Zhang told the Richmond News — via a Mandarinspeaking reporter — he acknowledges his permit mishap, he said a bylaw would make it easier for businesses, such as his, to include 50 per cent English.

“The rules aren’t so clear,” said Zhang, adding it was an oversight that he didn’t include English on his original sign, as he welcomes many non-Chinese customers to his business.

Meanwhile, community activist Kerry Starchuk, who petitioned city hall for an enforceable bylaw in 2013, says Zhang’s mistake is not new.

“The issue will keep arising without a language law in B.C.,”

But Coun. Ken Johnston said there has been 100 per cent compliance of the policy and this “one off,” while “annoying,” is an exception, he said. “Let’s not overreact.”

Starchuk said there are many more examples of Chineseonly signage.

A past study by the city found under five per cent of permitted business signs were truly only Chinese.

However the study didn’t account for signs that are mostly Chinese, nor non-permit signage, such as banners.

Many in the Chinese community have supported the concept of a bylaw to maintain English as a common language on business signs.

In the 2014 municipal election campaign, mayoral candidate Richard Lee, a lawyer, and campaign partner Sunny Ho, a developer, supported such a bylaw. They’ve since formed the Richmond Business Association, made up of mostly Chinese businesses.

There was support across political divides, including council candidates Helen Quan, a Conservative, and Henry Yao, a New Democrat.

Last year, city council created a “clutter bylaw,” whereby window signs and sidewalk sandwich boards are limited to varying degrees. The move was seen as a measure to control large signs, often in foreign languages.

When Lynn Hallgren first started working as a customer service associate at Dairy Queen in Richmond in 1979, she never would have expected that she would still be with the company in 2018. “It just happened,” she says over the phone from the store, which is now located at 8980 No. 3 Road, and is owned by Rahul Mehta. “A woman named Ellen Mensing was my mentor: she was the older lady in the store and now I’m the older lady!” she laughs.

Lynn says her store also organizes fundraisers that support local churches and schools by providing them with items for auction, such as ice cream cakes, and coupons at discounted prices. “It makes the schools happy and it makes the customers happy,” she says.

This commitment to philanthropy originates to when Hallgren first started working with the store in 1979. “My original boss, Ray Van Humbeck, was a very churchgoing man and he was generous to the community. He sponsored a number of initiatives including track meets.”

He supports the annual speculation tax, which will be two per cent of a home’s value, offset by paid taxes. Ergo, those who don’t pay taxes but own property will be targeted.

Most principal residences will be exempt.

Meanwhile, foreign buyers, who account for 7.5 per cent of Richmond homeowners, will pay more taxes.

But the foreign buyers’ tax will still not apply to farmland, despite the government committing to “examining” taxes on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Boat sinks near Steveston Historic post office saved

Rescue crews were called to Sands Head near Steveston after a 60-foot sailboat issued a mayday call Sunday afternoon.

A crack in the hull of the Amazing Grace prompted the call for help, said Lieut. Navy Tony Wright, spokesman for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria.

Two people were on the sailboat, he said. The Queen of Alberni ferry was diverted outside of Tsawwassen on its way to Duke Point to assist the sailboat.

Crews on one of the responding vessels provided a pump to the sailboat; efforts were made in the early evening to stabilize the vessel.

Farm groups clash again over homes

A group of land owners and farmers in Richmond is fighting back against what they call special interests intent on convincing city council to dial back the size of homes allowed on farmland.

“Richmond FarmWatch is petitioning the City of Richmond to follow provincial guidelines to limit home sizes on farmland and calling on the provincial government to finally implement the Foreign Buyer’s Tax on farmland,” stated FarmWatch in a statement Monday.

The Richmond Farmland Owners Association has launched a campaign and online petition to protect farmers’ property rights and land value.

The move comes as city council considers public input on a review of farmland houses sizes.

Last May, via a new bylaw, council restricted houses to 10,763 square feet on lots over half an acre. Provincial guidelines state a house should be no larger than 5,382 square feet, although municipalities have the discretion to go bigger (Maple Ridge) or smaller (Delta).

City staff recommended provincial guidelines become part of the bylaw but seven of nine councillors decided to double it last spring, while promising a possible review last November.

There is a public rally planned at Richmond City Hall Monday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. A petition by Richmond Citizens Association (a local NDP arm) has reached 4,400 signatures and will be presented to council.

“This policy has been in effect for merely six months and the true effects are yet to be realized; but due to pressure from special interest groups, Richmond City Council is considering dramatically reducing these home sizes again,” noted consultant Gunraj Gill, via a news release.

Many consider large homes as vehicles of speculation, driving up land values and making it impossible for new farmers to own and invest in land. Speculation could also lead to pulling land out of the Agricultural Land Reserve.

According to an economic analysis by the late economist Richard Wozny, a house of 4,200 square feet keeps in line with farm land values. As such, FarmWatch considers 5,382 square feet a compromise.

Now, the association wants to keep the status quo, claiming it is a compromise. It notes home plate restrictions were established (meaning the amount of land that can be developed for any given purpose — a home, driveway, barn or swimming pool). As such, the actual amount of land being developed is relatively nominal.

A further claim is that big houses are needed to house extended families, who work the fields.

Presently, Richmond farmland is rife with multi-million dollar land deals and flips on parcels less than 10 acres.

Council did allow farmers to apply for even larger homes if an argument could be made that a farm required such a multi-family unit. Association supporters have already cited two main reasons for opposing further limits.

An eight-acre plot on No. 2 Road recently rose in value from $88,000 to $8.3 million due explicitly to the construction of a nearly 12,000-square-foot home, according to BC Assessment.

Helping Helen rise to the challenge land in 1988 to become a nanny in Pitt Meadows — is where she’s hoping the support from her local community can kick in.

“I’d really love Richmond to get behind me, I need as much sponsorship and votes as I can get,” added Taylor, known to her friends as “Hellie Wellie.”

Helen Taylor was walking past a booth at the All About Women Show in Abbotsford last fall when something caught her eye.

“I feel that I’m at a stage of my life where I feel I’ve been doing the same thing over and over again. And there is so much I haven’t done yet.

It was marketing for the Total Makeover Challenge, the kind of thing that 53-year-old Richmondite Taylor would normally roll her eyes at.

“Yep, this is a big page turning for me. I know what I’m capable of doing; it’s just making the right connections and having the confidence to follow it through.

“They gave me a leaflet and I was rabbiting on about my life story and she said I should enter,” recalled Taylor, who lives on Williams Road, near No. 5 Road.

“I want to regain my self-confidence, motivation and intrigue that I had when I initially came to Vancouver to live.

“A month later, I got an email, saying they had a couple of spots left on the challenge and I should apply.

“I had so much spirit. I feel that I have so much more to give.”

“I thought to myself, ‘I got to, I really need this right now.’”

Unlike more superficial challenges, what stirred Taylor’s passion was that the four-month event — run since 2011 by nonprofit women’s organization Shape Your World — focuses on improving confidence and life skills of its 120 contestants.

“It’s not just about looking better, it’s about personal growth, coaching, journaling, making videos, getting sponsors and doing team races,” said Taylor, who used to work in sales in the beauty industry.

“We’re getting involved with the community and it’s making me go out and get sponsors. I’ve had to sell myself a little and it has been a bit intimidating.”

After six weeks, the 120 ladies — in teams from Chilliwack, Langley, Abbotsford and Taylor’s Vancouver crew — will get whittled down to 30 and then the final three, during which time they will receive nutritional coaching, fitness training,

Taylor said she’s also using the challenge as a springboard to putting a recent long-term relationship behind her.

“I feel like I’ve been under a rock for the last few years. I kind of got isolated during my previous relationship, I was sort of putting everything into that for six years,” she said.

OUR FEATURE ext week, for the first time in his six decades of life, Henry Beh will have a few vacant slots in his daily diary.

“If I see a business with a Chinese-only sign, I will tell them that there needs to be some English on there.

After 29 years at the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) — where he was a founding director, treasurer, president and currently executive director — Beh has decided to check out at the top.

Indeed, education and integration have been among the cornerstones of RCCS in Beh’s tenure, with classes such as “English Corner” featuring among the non-profit’s programming.

Word of his retirement as one of Richmond’s most-recognized and respected community leaders has travelled fast and he’s already knocked back a few offers for his services from other local organizations, citing that he’s got two granddaughters (age four and 10 months) ready to fill his day.

However, there will be an undoubted void left behind by Beh’s departure, given the efforts he and his small team have made over the years to not just support the local, immigrant Chinese community, but encourage them to integrate into mainstream society, as well.

And before he bid farewell to his desk at the RCCS office on Westminster Highway at Buswell Street, Beh offered some parting advice to the most recent wave of immigrants calling Richmond their home.

“Over last 10 years, from mainland China, there is a slightly different culture coming here,” said Malaysian-raised Beh, pointing out that he speaks Mandarin, as well as Cantonese.

“It takes time, education will work.”

“Our main objective has always been to build bridges with the mainstream (community) and be as inclusive as possible,” said Beh, who retired as an accountant in 2001 to work with RCCS, as its membership swelled from 200 to more than 1,000.

“Because of all the different cultures in Richmond, it can, if not dealt with properly, create lots of sensitivity, whether it be the Chinese sign issue or mega houses.

There is a lot of money coming in now with new immigrants from China...they need to do more to understand Canadian tradition and culture.

“The only way this can happen is for things to be inclusive; we are always doing outreach to all cultures. Our events have a little bit of something for everyone and our community dinners are for everyone.”

Born in 1989 out of the 13-year-old, parent-run Richmond Chinese School, the RCCS, according to Beh, was founded by people who wanted to help the wider community more than teaching their kids Cantonese and Mandarin.

“Continue with the education,” added Beh. “I’ve spoken to all sides on this. A lot of the people that are putting those Chinese-only signs up, they just don’t understand the Canadian culture and I’ve told them it’s wrong and it’s disrespectful.

Angela has a personal connection to the hospital.

While the level of care is excellent at Richmond Hospital, there are challenges due to the age of the original building. The Acute Care Tower was built in 1966 to serve a community of 50,000 people and not the population of 220,000 who live in Richmond today. In particular, the original tower is seismically unstable, severely deficient and needs to be replaced. When staying with her grandfather in the hospital, Angela wished that there was a more comfortable room.

On account of nearby migratory birds and Vancouver International Airport, it’s unlikely Richmond residents will ever see large scale wind turbines operating off the city’s shoreline.

But further afield, such an energy source may very well burn our bulbs and charge our vehicles. Or perhaps all our homes will have small windmills to capture the gusty Salish Sea. Helping us get to more sustainable energy solutions, such as wind, will now be up to the next generation, such as Grade 6 and 7 students from the Richmond School District.

And a glimpse of this future may just be evident at Science Jam next week (Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m.) at Aberdeen Centre.

While nine teams of three students will be competing against one another to build the most energy-efficient wind turbine for the regional Skills Canada competition March 1 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University Richmond campus, their projects will be on display at Science Jam two days in advance.

Dubbed the inaugural Maker Adventures program, science and environmental sustainability teacher consultant Neal Campbell has paired up with Hugh Boyd science teacher Doug Park to take a handful of the district’s most ambitious youngsters and turn them into energetic problem solvers.

“The purpose is to make changes in the future,” said Campbell.

The students will be handed various materials, such as cardboard pieces, to build their own windmills. Essentially, they’ll be designing the wind blades on a small turbine to determine how to create the most energy. The better their windmill turns from a small fan, the more voltage will be created.

Winners will go on to the provincial Skills Canada championship at Abbotsford Tradex.

“So they do hands-on maker space builds of the designs they have researched. And then they’re documenting all those steps in the digital realm because one of the big things is allowing the kids to express their knowledge in digital forms,” said Park.

But what is sustainable? It’s a daunting question, particularly in Beautiful B.C., where people are divided on whether a new oil pipeline should be built from Alberta and whether LNG should be tapped and exported to replace China’s dependence on dirty coal.

Campbell said next year, students may be tasked to make other projects tied to sustainability.

“Is that a legitimate bridge fuel?” asked Campbell. “Part of what we need to do with kids is equip them with the tools to be critical thinkers.”

“We have a strong environmental stewardship policy,” said Campbell.

“On the education side, we’re looking at embedding it into our curriculum, with knowledge and the opportunities

Dozens of MacNeill secondary students are set to perform The Girl with the Golden Locks, an actionpacked thriller-drama that’s one part Charlie’s Angels, one part fairytale.

The play gives new meaning to a “student-led production.”

Normally, school plays are overseen by a drama teacher or sponsor teacher, who volunteers their time after school.

With a rush to hire hundreds of new teachers this year in Richmond, neither could be found. But that didn’t stop Grade 12 student Iris Guo from unfurling the stage curtains.

Principal Marcia Timmins has, however, been able to pop in on Iris’ progress throughout the year and, to say the least, she’s impressed.

“Iris won’t say how much work she’s really done. It’s been quite impressive. It’s all her,” said Timmins.

For the past few months, Iris has been the glue that’s bonded the drama team to produce the anticipated play that runs Feb. 27 to March 2, as part of Education Week.

The public is welcome to attend any evening show at 6:45 p.m. for a modest entrance fee that doubles as a fundraiser.

Iris is actually studying to attend University of B.C.’s biotechnology program.

Acting is her second passion, although for this play she will be the director.

One of the leading roles is

played by Angel Wu, who plays Agent Gold.

I like to plan ahead,” said Angel.

Wu is one of three female agents tasked to combat the three bears from Goldilocks, who are attempting to stage a coup against the Kingdom.

The agents are directed by the Fairytale Bureau of Investigation (FBI), led by Chief Granny, played by Grade 12 student Kathy Wong.

Agent Gold “doesn’t take much seriously. But you’ll see in this play the shift in her emotions as she realizes she’s been causing trouble for her kingdom, and essentially her partners,” said Angel.

“We take on this mission to stop the bears,” explained Angel, who is on track to attend a post-secondary acting academy, possibly the New York Acting Academy.

This is her second school drama and if practice runs are any indication, she’ll take a commanding presence on stage.

The soft-spoken Angel said it wasn’t easy to adapt to Agent Gold (Goldilocks).

“While we share the trait of both being laid back and chill persons, she’s more impatient at times and wants to get things done at that point, which is not who I am.

One of Agent Gold’s two sidekicks, Agent White (Snow White) is played by Caragh Hauta, a Grade 9 student.

Caragh is one of the youngest actresses in the play. It is then somewhat fitting that she plays the sidekick.

“She’s the new kid to the group and she doesn’t really know what’s going on. She’s a little sister and she depends on Agent Red to fill her in,” said Caragh.

What’s the best way to discourage bullying between students? Building a strong school community, according to McNair secondary science teacher Michael Wolfe, who oversees a number of extracurricular groups.

“Students aren’t hanging out in cliques; there’s such a blend. It’s such a model for multicultural schools. In my high school years, it was very much culture based. But we don’t see that here anymore,” said Wolfe, a bornand-raised Richmondite.

While McNair Marlins such as Aly Williams, of the Marlinaires Social Justice Club, and Sarah Karim, of the Eco-Marlins Club, work on campaigns to directly stop bullying in the school, environmentalist Wolfe also teaches students to consider how protecting the enviornment has a broader impact on preventing bullying by

The face of bullying is changing.

At one point, almost all bullying took place in person. Physical altercations, hurtful comments and even gossip was conducted face-to-face.

But now, according to Media Smarts, nearly all teens have access to the Internet and in a typical month, 42 per cent of them experience cyberbullying, which can be linked to depression and anxiety.

“Initially, when cyberbullying became an issue, everyone really expected that it was just the same as face-to-face bullying, but now it’s just happening in an online environment,” Jennifer Shapka, associate professor in UBC’s Faculty of Education, told the Richmond News.

“Now we’ve really seen that it’s its own beast.”

Shapka noted that, with online bullying, the usual power imbalances present in bullying have shifted as it’s not just the physically strong or popular individuals who are capable of bullying anymore. And realiza-

Shapka echoed these thoughts, saying the sender can struggle to have empathy and compassion for the recipient of their messages.

“You’re kind of protected behind the screen. It bolsters you,” she said.

Another issue, Shapka pointed out, is the access younger children are having to the Internet.

Snapchat and Instagram are currently some of the most popular social media sites used amongst youth, she said, even though both require users to be at least 13 years old.

Furthermore, according to Media Smarts, 30 per cent of Canadian students in grades four to six have a Facebook account, even though anyone under the age of 13 is barred from using the site.

As a result, while cyberbullying used to really be noticeable amongst teens aged 15 to 18, Shapka said she’s observed cases of cyberbullying amongst younger age groups.

“As we know, parents are giving access to devices to kids at younger and younger ages,” she said. “We actually really see (cyberbullying) start more like around 11 or 12 and peak around 13.”

In spite of these increases in online bullying, Shapka explained that many youth choose to not tell an adult if it’s happening to them.

“They really worry that parents won’t get it or they’ll have a knee-jerk reaction of just taking the technology away,” she said.

Art pillars explore migration experienced, by using different lines and shapes in various bright colours.

“I originally painted the whole painting, then in some areas I added elements cut off from my previous paintings, like a collage, to create different textures,” said Kaur.

Those often passing Lansdowne and Aberdeen stations probably have noticed that the columns have had their “clothes” changed.

For example, one of the added parts is a piece of oddlyshaped fabric from a piece of Indian traditional clothing.

Kaur helped design the clothing for her mom’s Indian company a few years ago.

The columns are the city’s ongoing project, No.3 Road Art Columns exhibition, providing opportunities for local artists to showcase their work in public, using a selected theme.

“Every time people look at the picture, they will find something new and different,” added Kaur.

The theme on display now is a hot topic in the city — migration, presented by Vancouver artist Renée Van Halm and Richmond’s emerging artists, Patrick Wong and Russna Kaur.

“I was just online looking at art opportunities in the city and I saw the call for art on the website and I just applied.

Within a couple of weeks, I heard back from them. It’s exciting,” said Kaur, a first-year masters student in fine arts at Emily Carr University of Art & Design.

Kaur said she thinks of migration as the movement of people through spaces and places of chaos, not unlike when they wander through large cities, festivals and markets.

“People come from all over the place to experience the same thing, but then walk away with totally different experiences,” said Kaur.

“These places give everyone time to take a break from their regular roles and responsibilities.

“At the end of the day, you can always see pattern and

“But now because it’s part of their daily lives, when they are taking the skytrain, when they are driving by or walking by, or going to Lansdowne mall, all of a sudden they are more aware of art and what art can do.

“And because of the way it’s situated, there is really no right or wrong way to view the piece. You can enter it at different points and still it will make sense.”

The exhibition will be on display from now through July 31 on the No.3 Road Art Columns at Aberdeen and Lansdowne Canada Line Stations.

Book evaluates small businesses

She borrowed the method used in the book Wealthy Barber, to explain business principles by telling stories.

The three characters are: a retiring man selling his business, a new immigrant who moved here to buy business and a university student developing an idea for a video game.

In a city such as Richmond, where the economy is largely made up of small businesses, there are companies being bought and sold all the time.

To her surprise, Atva received a phone call from the author of the Wealthy Barber, David Chilton, who is also a former guest on the show Dragons Den, to discuss her new book.

Steveston resident Liisa Atva, who has worked in the world of finance for more than three decades, has written a book, in plain words, to help people understand the complicated issue of business valuation.

“Since it’s my first book and I’m not a famous writer, it was very hard to find a big publisher to publish it,” said Atva.

Atva will give a talk about her new book, The Ask: How Much is a Small Business Worth, at Richmond Library on Monday, Feb. 26.

“Because I have worked in business valuation before, I was always helping friends and families buying and selling businesses,” said Atva.

“A friend told me there was a need for a book on this. I know the topic and I like to write, so I started to write this book.”

She said her book is not limited to those who want to sell or buy small businesses, but also owners of companies, even startups, who want to grow their firms.

“And if you understand how a business is valued, there are things you can do right when you start to make your business more valuable.”

For example, one common mistake people make is to name the business after themselves, according to Atva.

“The problem is that when you sell the business to someone else, unless you find

someone who has the same name, it might be a disadvantage,” said Atva.

“It’s really encouraging to have such a famous person call you and take the time.”

One recommendation she gives for business owners is to create more an intangible asset, including its brand name, solid customer base, good customer relations and good employee relations.

Another highlight for Atva is that her book was added to the recommended booklist of the Entrepreneur Finance course in Simon Fraser University.

“You have to be careful to make that part of your business, so it stays there, even after the owners are changed,” added Atva.

Mayor reflects on safety and economy He emphasized the city’s effort to overcome challenges faced in a new era, such as an increasing and rapidly-aging population, and the affordability problem.

As he moved towards the end of the council term, Mayor Malcolm Brodie reviewed the work the City of Richmond has done in the past three years, and shared his vision for building a safe and vibrant community in 2018.

His annual address, hosted recently by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, began with the city’s decision to invest more resources in police this year.

“In 2018, city council will direct about 37 cents of every tax dollar received towards police and fire-rescue services, as well as emergency programs,” said Brodie.

“Altogether, the council approved the hiring of 40 additional police officers and six municipal police support employees during the current term.”

He added the city also expects to continue investing in closed-circuit cameras at major intersections.

By the end of this year, Richmond’s population should surpass 220,000 residents, according to Brodie.

In 2017, the total construction value of building permits was $709 million, marking the third highest year in total, said Brodie.

“Growing by eight per cent since 2011, the number of local housing units has reached almost 73,500.

“Approximately 74 per cent of all private households are owner-occupied with the balance being rented. 42 per cent of all private households are part of a multi-family development.”

When asked by the Richmond News about the labour shortage problem faced in Richmond, Brodie said, “there is little we can do except to provide as many housing units as we can, have settlement programs and language services… to support people coming in to live in Richmond.”

Not exactly Title Planning….

Earlier this month, reasons were released by our Supreme Court in a case called Walsh v. Walsh. This case was, to me, somewhat odd in that it involved a lawsuit that settled but one issue ended up being raised that delayed the implementation of the settlement agreement, and the parties had to go to Court to resolve the issue.

But what was just as important if not more important, was the basis for the lawsuit, which is I think worthy of some discussion.

The population of the City of Richmond is increasing at a rapid pace – with the fastest growing group being adults 75 and older.

Who’s in charge of snow-covered bike lanes?

Snow! I hope everyone enjoyed it.

I also hope people required to by law, cleaned all the snow from the sidewalks in front of their houses.

Now remember, this is bylaw. You can receive a $70 fine if you have not cleared the snow from in front of your property by 10 a.m. the morning after snow has fallen.

now, too. The reason, of course, is slippery sidewalks are dangerous.

Sidewalks are the arteries for pedestrian movement.

It makes me wonder though, why by 10 a.m. I saw on Sunday morning, none of the cycling lanes had been cleared.

It’s illegal to ride a bike on a sidewalk, most of which were cleared and dry, so where is a cyclist supposed to ride if the entire bike lane is covered in snow and ice?

Whose responsibility is it to make sure my tax dollars are providing

safety for my travels in the city?

I pay property tax, gas tax and every other tax — so why am I treated to lower standards, just because I choose to ride a bike?

And, as I explained last column, since I’m unable to pay ICBC to insure my bike for riding on these public roads, if I slip on the ice and hurt myself or my bike from an icecovered bike lane, I’m fully responsible for all costs.

I know it’s not home owners who are responsible to clear bike paths in front of their house or business, so I put all of the blame on city hall.

City hall has a job to make sure everyone is safe, and all the roads are safe for everyone using them.

This happens every single year.

I think the person who is ultimately responsible for keeping all cyclists

as safe as possible has failed and should receive a $70 fine.

Actually, I would rather that person make a $70 donation to Cycling BC, where I volunteer, teaching elementary age children in Richmond bike safety and skills.

So how about it, Mr. Mayor, will you accept responsibility for the dangerous conditions cyclists faced on your roads?

The McMath Wildcats took their season to Langley but not in the ultimate venue they were hoping for.

The five-time Richmond senior girls champion saw its campaign end Tuesday at Walnut Grove Secondary in a 72-63 provincial “AAA” wild card game loss to the Heritage Woods Kodiaks.

Both teams were relegated to the do-or-die affair after not securing B.C. berths at their zone championships.

Five days earlier, the Wildcats were 10 minutes away from earning their fourth straight trip to the Langley Events Centre. They took a lead into the fourth quarter of their Crehan Cup semi-final encounter with Carson Graham, only to be outscored 17-5 and lose 59-51.

A 65-58 win over Handsworth on Friday earned them another crack at a B.C. berth — this time in Saturday’s third place game against the New West Hyacks. McMath’s usually reliable perimeter game struggled for two quarters in an eventual 62-52 setback.

That meant a wild card game scenario where too many Lower Mainland teams have seen their B.C. bids end over the last two decades against the extremely deep Fraser Valley zone.

Heritage Woods entered the Valley playoffs ranked No. 4 in the province but stumbled in a 5554 round of 16 loss to Sullivan Heights. They closed out the championships with another setback — this time to Brookswood — leaving them eighth. The Port Moody school is led by UBC bound Hailey Counsell.

The MacNeill Ravens are taking their season to the B.C. Junior Boys Basketball Championships at the Langley Events Centre.
