When I told someone around here (won’t mention any names) I was thinking of writing this week’s column about the glorious cherry blossoms and their power to unite people in a celebration of nature, I was met with a sardonic guffaw. In fact, it was suggested that such a reverie might have readers “spitting out their muesli.”

Well, what does a cynical Scot know – he, from the land of the thistle.

So here goes, my ode to the cherry blossom.

I consider myself a bit of a 40-year-old cherry blossom virgin. I was 40 when I moved to Richmond and until then had never really experienced the full glory of trees heavily laden with pink and white blossoms, or the wonder of being caught in a blossom blizzard as the wind blew the pretty petals off the branches or picked them up off the ground.

And then there were the newly-claimed bragging rights. I recall seeing a cartoon. In the first panel, a guy with a snow blower is clearing snow from his walkway. In the next panel, a guy with a snow blower is clearing cherry blossoms from his walkway. That’s the kind of thing you just have to clip out and sent back to friends in Ontario.

But, of course, the real magic of cherry blossoms is their combined grandeur and fragility. They explode onto the scene, but only for a couple of weeks, or maybe just days.

It’s their glorious, yet fleeting nature that makes them such a poignant symbol of the precious, yet transient, nature of life.

I talked about this column idea to my sister, who, I’ll have you know, did not so much as smirk at its cheesiness. She lived in Japan for a number of years and said you can’t imagine how big a deal it is there. And it goes well beyond looking at pretty flowers, or even revering nature. It’s about connecting.

Employee groups, interest clubs, friends, family, even the “incense smelling group” she was part of (no kidding — I come by this honestly) would gather under the cherry blossoms to do their thing, elevating the moment by being in the presence of such riotous fragility.

This is only the second year of Richmond’s Cherry Blossom Festival, and organizers say they’ve chosen the theme of harmony for this year’s event. They’ve chosen harmony because they’re seeing too little of it in our community of late.

They have a point. There has been plenty of discord, contentious issues and hostile outbursts. But there have also been some inspiring moments. In fact, last night, proponents and detractors of the housing project for the homeless, a project that has ignited a furious debate, came together at a “roundtable.” What’s more, this was an entirely grassroots initiative, the product of caring people reaching out.

As British author and journalist Johann Hari, who was in Richmond recently for a housing conference, said: “The opposite of addiction, isn’t sobriety — it’s connection.”

It may be a stretch to say the opposite to disharmony is celebrating cherry blossoms, but maybe not if that celebration is about creating connections and appreciating the wonder of nature.

So, how’s that muesli going down?

Great letters Schools full aid optimism for wrong Dear Editor, In many of my letters over the years to this publication, I have tried to promote more conversation amongst the public and between the public and our politicians about some of the culture-related and development challenges we face in this community.

I am very gratified that more Richmond citizens are weighing in with their opinions and suggestions about those issues these days, as evidenced by the Letters section in the March 29 issue.

It is only through open and objective conversations and analysis that serious problems can be defined and solved and the more reasoned, informed, and articulate the contributions to those conversations are, the more likely we will have success in solving them.

The more I read submissions like those made by Kelvin Higo, Tina Tan, and Robyn Freheit, the more optimistic I become about our local politicians being forced to be more concerned about our concerns.

Re: “Four Richmond elementary schools close the door on new in-catchment students,” News, March 29.

Reading the feature article about catchment schools unable to accommodate neighbourhood children, I need to point out something that is known to us parents in Richmond and was completely missed in the article.

Our catchment is Blair elementary. If you come and watch one school morning, you’ll see luxury car after luxury car driving into the neighbourhood dropping off children. These are not neighbourhood children. Many of these parents have lied to get their kids into this school. False documents and fake rental contracts with houses of friends and family so they can list local addresses — all because Blair ranks highly on some ratings.

Keep them coming folks, and keep printing them Richmond News!

Neighbourhoods in Richmond are under attack and have been for years. Empty homes, empty schools in some areas, full schools in other highly-viewed areas. It’s sad to see.

Scapegoating won’t help housing crisis Dear Editor,

Re: “Letters special: Richmond News readers vent over modular housing,” Richmond-News.com, March 17 I do not live in the immediate neighborhood of the proposed temporary modular housing site but about a block down near the Lansdowne area.

Initially, I did not hold any particular opinion about the project as I agreed with the principle of helping the homeless. As the situation developed, I began to believe that the controversy was simply a ploy to shift blame for the housing crisis on the Chinese community.

I find it hard to believe that only those in favour of the project wrote to the Richmond News. I question whether this is a fair representation of the sentiment of Richmond residents.

Re: “Worlds collide for Richmond realtor couple,” News, March 24: I sympathize with the plight of Mr. Dinnell’s brother-in-law. However, a cursory look on Dinnell Real Estate Group’s website shows multiple listings of single-detached houses priced in the range of $3 to $8 million. Naturally, I wonder whether Mr. Dinnell could have helped his brother-in-law more directly, given his financial success in real estate and a well-to-do lifestyle on his social media.

As a long-time reader of the News and a Chinese immigrant who actually lives in the area, pays his property taxes and has a mortgage, I wonder whether we are being scapegoated for a problem we did not cause.

Dear Editor, I sat for three hours in an overfilled council chambers Monday, hearing and pondering the many points of view on whether or not to limit farmhouses to 500 square metres (aprox. 5,400 square feet), which sure sounds like a “dream home” to me, and certainly enough for all my relations, who, if the farmwork runs out, can help with dusting all those rooms.

It seems, at least in some cases, that the blueberries in the field, in spite of how much love and labour it takes to bring them to harvest, might just be a token, a stand-in for bumping up one’s equity.

As at least one speaker said, his crop is only worth $10,000 a year — not exactly enough to play poker with the big boys, so what’s the deal? Its potential value as an investment, whether to house a family or not, is really what’s driving this “game” forward.

Speaking of card games, after watching the deals in this week’s round of hands, I can report that the casino doors of City Hall are still wide open (for rampant speculation) and the stakes are higher than ever.

And that everybody with skin in the game is still bluffing, whether or not the “pot” (or field) is full of blueberries, buffalo chips, cow patties or the real green stuff — marijuana, as the case may be.

Oddly though, the local players with vested interests are no longer holding their cards so close to their chest, with many players essentially admitting on Monday night, more or less directly, that without the large house size allowance (currently 1,000 sq metres or 10,700+ sq. ft.) they won’t be able to maximize their land values necessary to gain the equity needed to keep their farm viable, and their families housed (let alone the opportunity to cash in when the

time is right, before the casino goes broke).

It’s a safe bet, though, that with at least a tripling of farmland values in a year, no one currently in the game will lose their shirt, however small of a house they are stuck in.

Meanwhile, seen from a tiny corner on another side of the betting table, the pot odds are ever-increasing for new potential farmers wanting to lay a measly little bet in this high-stakes game, before they just fold altogether, giving up on their dream of feeding the rest of us foolish ones.

They know that when the chips are down, and famine is at the door (and no mansion door is exempt from famine) the real value of every acre of fertile soil will be revealed.

I must also report that the city (or at least the majority of council except Steves, Day and the mayor), acting as both dealer and casino manager, with its own cards still held close, decided to hold off playing its hand decisively — yet again. There’s a name for that and it’s the stuff left behind by those flightless birds in the barnyard.

The given reason for the indecision: that related concerns could be packaged comprehensively, such as whether the farmers can build an extra full-house for labourers, and whether they should do a straight or a royal flush into their septic fields, and whether those fields are under the raspberries or under the tennis court.

Cascading Life Insurance – Insurance beyond the grave? (probably, and for grandchildren mainly) There seems to be a new way grandparents can benefit their grandchildren, or even other persons, without necessarily doing it through their Estates. It is a Universal Life Insurance Policy (not a whole life policy). The grandparent purchases the policy and over time, moves money into it. An adult child is the “contingent” owner of the policy. The policy insures the life of the adult child. A grandchild will be named the beneficiary. When the grandparent dies, the adult child can reserve the policy for the grandchild, who will receive the death benefit when the adult child dies. It does not attract taxes and the funds do not reach the Estate of either the grandparent nor the adult child. Money in the policy is creditor protected as well. A new acute care tower for Richmond Hospital is on its way, announced Premier John Horgan last Thursday.

Horgan, alongside Health Minister Adrian Dix in the hospital’s Milan Ilich Pavilion, said his provincial government has approved the hospital tower’s concept plan and will now proceed to a business plan, which can take 12 to 18 months to finalize.

Calling the existing tower “out of date,” Horgan underlined the importance of adding new, additional beds to serve a growing and ageing population.

“The new acute care tower will modernize Richmond Hospital for the coming decades and bring quality public health care to people who live and work here,” said Horgan.

The business plan will determine the scope of the project and its budget, although preliminary estimates from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) in 2016 pegged a new tower

at about $283 million.

“We expect this new tower will not only increase service for in-patient care but will also support, new robust models of care that reflect the diverse needs of the community,” said VCH’s CEO Mary Ackenhusen.

One of those models is expected to be a traditional Chinese medicine department. A key aspect of the tower will be private patient rooms and improved design for patient flow.

The Richmond Hospital Foundation has noted it is willing to contribute $40-50 million of the projected costs. According to the Ministry, VCH and the foundation will confirm final funding contributions after a more detailed cost estimate is completed. Exact costs will be confirmed in the business plan.

Following business plan approval, the government will go to procurement of a contractor and then construction, which could then take three years, according to VCH. Preliminary designs show the new, eightstorey tower located on the south side of the property with green space replacing the old “north tower.”

Time was also of the essence due to the condition of the existing tower. Opened in 1966, the tower’s seismic safety has been a widespread and longstanding concern.

A Richmond lawyer is being investigated by the Law Society of B.C. amid allegations of arranging a “criminal rate” loan agreement.

William Lim, of Canmerica, has been cited by the society to answer professional misconduct allegations that he issued a loan in 2011 through Canmerica that “he knew or ought to have known provided for interest at a criminal rate.”

Interest rates, under the Criminal Code of Canada, which exceed 60 per cent per year are referred to as “criminal rates of interest.”

A second allegation, which will be heard by a Law Society panel, claims that, during a B.C. Supreme Court

case in 2015, Lim “gave misleading evidence to the Court with respect to the rate of interest to be charged” in a Canmerica loan.

According to the February, 2018 citation, Lim’s alleged conduct constitutes professional misconduct or conduct unbecoming a lawyer.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Lim could not be reached by the Richmond News for comment.

Citations are authorized by the Law Society of B.C.’s discipline committee and list allegations against a lawyer that will be considered at a discipline hearing.

According to the Vancouver Sun, Lim and Canmerica have been involved in a number of legal cases revolving around immigration, real estate and business investment.

Most recently, in a B.C. Supreme Court case that was settled just before going to trial, legal filings detailed allegations of secret cash dealings and transactions involving Lim and Canmerica at a Richmond Chinese restaurant business. Lim and the restaurant’s owner, a wealthy offshore real estate investor, successfully petitioned to close the settlement proceedings to the public.

In this case, a bitter financial dispute between the owner and Lim on one side, and the restaurant’s head chef and food suppliers on the other, spilled into allegations made in Chinese media.

Lim and Huang claim their reputations have been unfairly damaged in the Chinese media reports.

In a room filled with dozens of witnesses, the Greater Vancouver community hearings for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) began in Richmond Tuesday night and the message shared during the opening ceremonies was one of hope for healing.

“What does keep us all together is pain.

The pain of colonization,” said Marion Buller, one of the inquiry’s four commissioners.

“Can we, by the end of this week, let go of some of that pain and replace it with joy and pride and strength and courage?

“That’s why we’re here. Let go of that pain through telling the stories and sharing experiences one and all.”

Beginning Wednesday morning and continuing until Sunday, families will share their stories through public and private hearings and artistic expressions.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us. Hard work this week,” said Buller, as she noted

The inquiry, which has now been to multiple cities across the country has a simple overarching principle: “our women and girls are sacred.”

Putting that into practice, the mandate of the hearings is to examine and report on the systemic causes of all forms of disproportionate violence against Indigenous

women, girls and LGBTQ2S people in Canada by identifying patterns and underlying factors.

In addition, institutional practices and policies implemented in response to violence experienced by Indigenous women and girls will be examined.

The Greater Vancouver hearings are the largest hearings so far, and Richmond was chosen to host the gathering in order to accommodate the large crowds. The hearings will run in three different rooms at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel and many are open to the public.

For Buller, these hearings represent that it’s time for First Nations communities to stand confidently.

“We’re beautiful people. All of us,” Buller said. “We’re strong, we’re smart, we’re still here after years of colonization.”

An all-day forum hosted by Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and the Richmond RCMP marked the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination recently, with more than 100 people in attendance.

“We are doing this because the work is not done,” said Richmond’s Insp. Baltej Dhillon, MC of the forum, who is known as the first RCMP officer to wear a turban after fighting for his religious rights.

“The work continues as there still remains elements within our community and our country that propagate hate and extend violence through words.”

The forum featured two world-renowned speakers, Omar Rachid and Dr. Gary Branfman, who shared their experiences about a hate-filled attack in Texas, where a mosque was burned to the ground, causing the community to come together in solidarity.

“When the mosque was burnt, the entire community came together as one community. Muslim, Jewish, Christians, white and blacks, Asians... everybody got together to support each other,” said Branfman.

“Neighbourly love transpired and overwhelmed the entire world. But this is how people are supposed to be. The only way to combat racism is by these acts of overwhelming human kindness.”

Branfman said no one is born racist; some were taught to be racist, and they need to be “untaught” through education.

“I think there is a window of opportunity if someone is raised in a racist household, and is misguided with false information, it’s not out of the question for these people to be re-educated,” said Branfman.

One way to combat racism, according to Rachid, is to stand up to the bullies and not let them get away from it.

“Don’t laugh if someone makes a joke

Some of the ways an individual or organization may earn special recognition are:

Noor Fadel, a local Muslim woman who was assaulted by a man on the Canada Line in Richmond last December, also spoke at the event.

At the time, she was most appalled by the fact no one on the crowded train said or did anything or help her until, finally, a young man stepped in.

Dhillon shared his experience when a taxi driver in Richmond commented that “all Chinese drivers are bad.”

“I said, ‘that is wrong, and you are wrong.

And it is really unfortunate you have that kind of thinking, because it will take me the rest of this drive to explain to you how this is wrong. I would wish we could talk about something else today,” he recalled.

Rachid pointed out that racism doesn’t just go one way. It not only exists among members of a dominant or majority group to those of a historically disadvantaged group – there is also “reverse racism,” and “no one should fight racism with racism.”

He believes communication helps eliminate fear, which, in many cases, is at the heart of racism.

“I have invited many people who have concerns about Muslims to have coffee or lunch together. I think once you do that, they learn about the person they may be fearful of and the character of that person, and then that fear is dissipated and gone,” said Rachid.

Dhillon said the Richmond RCMP would continue to make it “not safe” for people with racist attitudes to have a voice.

“We will try to change their mind through compassion and kindness, to bring awareness and understanding,” said Dhillon.

“If we can’t change their mind, the second step is to interfere, to interrupt their agenda of hate.”

A non-profit group has been formed in the hopes of breaking the stalemate between residents who support or oppose a proposal to build temporary modular housing (TMH) on Elmbridge Way. The complex will house people who are currently homeless in the city.

Dialogue Richmond, led by community activist Henry Yao, who is also a board member of the Richmond Chinese Community Society, planned to host the TMH roundtable last night at the Cultural Centre.

Richmond Poverty Response Committee, who are at odds over the project, will send representatives to the event, according to Yao. Staff from B.C. Housing and other local non-profit organizations such as the Richmond Food Bank and Chimo Community Services will also attend and answer questions.

“These collective efforts aim to place a greater understanding of how the community should move forward with modular housing projects,” said Yao. The roundtable, which is open to the public, will consist of two parts — a panel for all parties to express their opinions, and a Q&A session for the audience to ask questions to any of the groups involved.

“I think, at this point, it’s very important to have a constructive conversation instead of those angry, emotionally charged arguments,” Yao told the Richmond News.

Yao hopes the TMH roundtable will be a good example of “how the community can become more united through conversation, consideration and cooperation.”

“The goal of the roundtable is to create a fair, simple and constructive channel, where both sides can hear each other’s concerns, and learn from local professionals who can answer questions and correct any misguided information.”

“The level of dialogue in Richmond needs to improve, and we’re putting on this roundtable to do just that,” said Yao.

Onni hotel plan causes concern

The Onni Group has accepted city council’s demand of $5.5 million in amenity contributions in exchange for rezoning the Steveston boardwalk, but the company’s ambiguous hotel proposal has made the council hesitant.

During Tuesday’s general purposes committee meeting, an Onni representative said the company would pay $5.5 million in amenity contributions, as requested by council last December, to have the Imperial Landing waterfront buildings rezoned from maritime to commercial use.

However, Onni’s application was referred back to staff because a number of councillors had issues with the company’s proposed operating model for the hotel on the land.

Unlike conventional hotels which have permanent staff onsite, Onni had proposed a remote operation model, wherein customers would arrange a way to gain access to their room using a barcode or another method.

“Councillors had some concerns about the operation model, feeling that there could be a lack of supervision of the site,” said Ted Townsend, spokesperson for the City of Richmond.

Councillors also wanted some legal commitments from Onni about how the hotel would be operated, but Onni has yet to provide that, he added.

Older stratas starting to fall

Controversial strata termination could spur speculation and massive overhaul of housing Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

A 41-year-old, 102-unit apartment complex near Garden City Community Park could soon be the site of Richmond’s first so-called “demovictions” on a mass scale, as its strata council prepares to sell the property to a developer — possibly prompting a domino effect of redevelopment in the City Centre area east of No. 3 Road.

While 84 per cent of the Ascott Wynde’s owners (86 of 102) agreed to the $49.8 million sale, a minority group of owners is calling foul and hoping a B.C. Supreme Court judge considers their hardship and nixes the deal, following a required legal review of the strata termination (wind up).

The fact that real estate marketing firm Rennie and Associates negotiated a 60 per cent premium above 2018 property assessments from Everbright Properties Inc. is of little comfort to sale opponent Victoria Grigorenko, who lives in a three-bedroom unit with her 89-year-old mother Galina.

“You think it is easy to find a new home? I don’t have a car, I am within walking distance to everywhere, all my doctor appointments, all my mother’s doctor appointments.

It’s my home,” Grigorenko told the Richmond News.

In 2016, a new law allowed for a strata to terminate and sell to a developer with an 80 per cent vote. The controversial change (from 100 per cent) was seen as a benefit to developers but also stratas that were facing significant repair bills and are in the sightlines of lucrative municipal plans to densify, but which had a small number of holdouts — as appears to be the case here.

Until recently, older apartment housing stock has been left untouched in central Richmond, as residential developers have focused on one-storey commercial properties and empty lots.

According to proponents of the sale, the three-storey Ascott Wynde is in a state of disrepair and Everbright’s offer to buy and redevelop the property into a 140-150 townhouse complex is a blessing — especially given a special levy of $50,000 to $70,000 per person is on the horizon.

But closing the deal has become more complicated, with allegations by opponents that owners were misled about aspects of the sale, as well as concerns being expressed

“I don’t think they were educated about the real situation,” said Grigorenko.

With a career background in architecture (she serves on the city’s heritage commission), Grigorenko cites the many pleasant aspects of living in Ascott Wynde, such as the proximity to two large parks to the east and the downtown core to the west. The prospect of moving is a difficult one for her elderly mother. She said she has not been able to find a suitable replacement home.

Grigorenko says the sale harms the most disadvantaged residents, including herself, as she is on disability assistance. She figures about 20 units are rented, thus jeopardizing renters (who have no say in the matter) faced with the prospect of eviction in a city with nearly no vacancy.

According to opponent Marek Wozniak, “the gist of the story is that they (Rennie) rushed it, they pressured people and they scared people. Not many had time to react. There are people who are old and who have nowhere to go. Their future is uncertain and Rennie is only out to make a profit.”

The process began first with an informal talk about the prospect of abandoning the complex before the special levies. At the AGM in February, 2016, strata council was directed to explore sales options. In December, 2016, council voted to hire Rennie. This led to an information meeting in January, 2017, where most agreed

to proceed. By June, lawyers were hired (Lawson Lundell LLP) and in August, Rennie presented six offers. Everbright offered six months free rent to all owners once the deal is finalized, and won the bid.

It is contended by many opponents that the bid is too low as it factors in land being lost to road widening.

“City of Richmond has approved road widening along Garden City Road,” notes a Rennie and Associates presentation to owners.

Three fashion design students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University are breaking down barriers through their gender-neutral fashion lines.

Sondra McGaw, Erin Chisholm and Joel Jhocson are all in their final months at KPU’s four-year fashion design and technology program. All three wanted to create unique fashion lines that made people feel comfortable with who they are — regardless of gender.

“The idea of gender is so contextually relevant and it’s ever-changing and therefore sort of arbitrary,” said Chisholm, who designed the line Pierrot under the brand th.on.

“I think that fashion is a means of selfexpression. It’s the first thing that people see about you and I think that to be completely comfortable in yourself, you need to have that sort of self-expression.

So to be able to wear the clothes you want to wear and that fit your body is really important.”

Chisholm’s line has a historical influence and celebrates ambiguity. One of Chisholm’s pieces features a high neck-

line that comes under the nose, covering the wearer’s mouth.

“It plays into the idea that for the longest time, people who were not heteronormative or lived outside of what society expected them to be, were silenced,” Chisholm said. “So I’m taking back that idea…even though their mouth is covered, they are fully expressing themselves...”

Posture – Keep your neck in the midline position. Avoid working, watching T.V. and speaking on the phone with your neck rotated and tilted. When lying down, ensure that your neck is adequately supported by pillows which keep your neck in line with the centre of your chest. A firm mattress is generally recommended to support the neck back and pelvis.

Generally if the bite is correct, the vertical height of your dentures are correct, then adjustments should be of a muscular nature only. Adjustments can be expected on the lower denture inside by the back of your tongue. This is where muscles attach to your jaw bone. These muscles extend to your throat and to your tongue. A sharp pain or a pinching feeling may become evident in as little as two to three days. Currently all Canadian banknote issued since 1867 are legal tender. In the Liberal Federal budget there was a mention of making all older currency no longer legal tender. What this means is that you would no longer be able to spend it but you could take it to the bank. I believe that this is the prelude to demonetizing the bills like they do in most countries in Europe.

Currently many older notes in used condition have a collector value a bit above the face value, with new condition notes being much more valuable. lf the bills are demonetized, most notes from 1954 and newer will need to be uncirculated to have any value. l am recommending that people call their MP and complain about this change to our currency.

Celebrating the arrival of spring and the blooming of the cherry blossoms, the traditional, Japanese festival highlights a culture

where cherry blossoms signify a time of renewal and the cycle of life. Every year in Japan, cherry blossom celebrations are a significant civic event, Tanaka said.

The blossoms don’t last long, however, and the petals begin to fall just two weeks after they bloom.

“For us to bring the Richmond diversified community together, to reconnect with old friends, meet new ones and rekindle the sense of community and to celebrate the return of spring and enjoy the transience and beauty of 255 Akebono cherry trees in full bloom, that is our main goal,” Tanaka said.

blossom trees. The free, rain-orshine event will feature traditional Japanese music, dance, food and activities.

As part of the festival, attendees can picnic under the blossoming trees, a tradition that’s hundreds of years old and is known as “hanami,” or “watching blossoms,” which is something Tanaka would like to see implemented even more in future festivals.

“It gives an opportunity for the Japanese community and also us Japanese Canadians to introduce our tradition and custom to the diverse community,” Tanaka said.

“We all have individual cultures, by why can’t we all come together? That is why I say we rekindle the sense of community. That is key to us this year.”

New Tofino flight no laughing matter RICHMOND NEWS

Kevin Boothroyd, Pacific Coastal’s director of Business Development and Corporate Communications, said the airline couldn’t ignore the boom in tourism in Tofino any longer.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“We’ve been looking at this for a while bu the timing wasn’t right,” said Boothroyd.

“Over the last couple of years, the tourism numbers have just gone through the roof.

As the 19-seater Beech aircraft descended out of the clouds, the sweeping shores and magnificent rainforests revealed themselves a couple of thousand feet below.

“Secondly, the main highway in and out of Tofino is going to be under construction for a couple of years. That highway can get crazy.

Sadly, that was about as close to the likes of Long Beach, Cox Bay and South Chesterman’s as I was going to get Tuesday, as a VIP passenger on Pacific Coastal’s first, scheduled, daily flight from YVR’s south terminal in Richmond to Tofino.

I had been given the option to stay over – rather than get back on the inaugural reverse flight – but my wife baulked at the suggestion of me setting foot on the aforementioned beaches without her.

Suffice to say, if you’ve ever been to Tofino, you will feel my pain.

On the flip side, there were those brimming with joy at the prospect of not having to face the arduous, six-hour plus journey via carferry-car to get to the glory of Tofino.

On the way there, it was 42 minutes from tarmac to tarmac, and only 38 on return.

Askounis has, on occasion, used other operators, KD Air and Orca Air, who have been running daily scheduled services to Tofino for some time. But Pacific Coastal’s 19-seater is

the largest to be used for the route to date.

“It cuts down massively on the travel time and the uncertainty with the ferries and possible accidents,” said Askounis.

“I have a full staff over there, but obviously I need to be there from time to time.”

As for potential customers, Askounis said the barrier of the journey being lifted and offered at a reasonable cost could be a boon.

For example, a one-way ticket next week, fees and taxes included, ranges from $144 to $227 on the way out and $138 to $200 on the way back, depending on the day.

Tofino mayor Josie Osborne, one of the VIPs on the tarmac on the west coast side, told the Richmond News how the new service is a “game-changer.”

“This is huge…for the west coast, having Tofino and Ucluelet connected to so many communities in B.C. and also for people flying into YVR now able to transfer over with little time and trouble,” said Osborne.

The new flight operates seven days a week, leaving YVR 3 p.m. with the return flight from Tofino leaving at 4:15 p.m.

However, the real challenge right now, Chu said, is that most facilities in Metro Vancouver don’t handle compostable plastics. As a result, many of those compostable pods end up in landfill sites.

Single-use coffee pods have long been criticised for clogging landfill sites, but Richmond-Queensborough MLA Jas Johal and a local coffee company are brewing up an alternative.

Andrew Marr, director of solid waste planning at Metro Vancouver, confirmed that while some companies take compostable plastics, others don’t.

“It’s up to them to decide, based on their individual processing technologies, operational needs and business plans,” said Marr.

Earlier this month, Johal introduced a private member’s bill which would ban all sales of non-compostable, single-use beverage pods starting in 2022. It has now been given a first reading.

“And certain compostable plastics require different time or temperature to be broken down. So a compostable plastics that is acceptable to one composting facility may not be acceptable in another.”

The bill also demands that all compost facilities in B.C. accept compostable plastics as green waste, which is not currently the case.

The City of Richmond does not accept compostable plastics at the moment.

Johal said he was inspired to put forward the bill by a Richmond company, Canterbury Coffee, which this year created fully compostable coffee pods.

Johal hopes that, if his bill is passed, all facilities will be forced to update their technology so all compostable plastics can be accepted.

“It’s wonderful that we have a Richmond business at the forefront of this,” said Johal.

“Not just compostable coffee pods, but plastic bags, plastic cutlery, all sorts of those things. The more we can do to eliminate plastics from our environment, the better it is for society,” said Johal.

“The technology is now available for this to happen. It’s not like you want to force this on companies that are brand new to it.”

While some big coffee pod companies, such as Keurig K-Cups, are working towards making their products fully recyclable, Johal said Canterbury Coffee is already ahead of the game.

“It’s four years before the bill, if passed, would come into effect. That should give the market enough time to adapt.”

“I think the ultimate goal for everything you do in society should be getting to a point where we limit plastics,” said Johal.

Part of the current problem with recyclable coffee pods is the complexity of disassembling the pods into separate parts and cleaning them, which makes recycling unappealing for many consumers.

Canterbury Coffee’s fully compostable coffee pods consist of multiple components, explained Shalaine Chu, the com-

pany’s manager of communications and public relations.

The ring and mesh are made of plant-based plastics which break down easily into compost, and the lid consists of paper and bioplastic cement.

Regardless, Canterbury Coffee will continue producing its compostable coffee pods at a competitive price, despite the higher cost of bioplastics manufacturing.

“We are trying to create demand, so that more and more people will use the products. As a company, we also want other companies to use compostable plastics, because the more people use it, the more costs go down,” said Chu. “I’m confident that we are going to move forward, I’m confident that compostable plastics is the way to go, and I’m confident that it is a big enough issue to address.”

HK murder unfolds in Gateway

“At that time, even though Chinese people were the majority there, because the British were in charge, the Chinese were like second-class citizens in their own home,” said Sy.

“I wanted to set the story up in colonial Hong Kong because I thought it would be great to see the kind of detective that we don’t see very often, a Chinese detective who is very much in charge and very capable, and who solves the crime.”

It’s a drama that solves two mysteries: a murder and someone’s unclear identity in a colonial period.

The performance is set in 1920s Kowloon (Nine Dragons), colonial Hong Kong, and explores a series of murders investigated by detective Tommy Lam. The prime suspect, Victor Fun, is the son of a wealthy and powerful Chinese family.

He said the kernel of Nine Dragons is how the detective tries to solve the “mystery within a mystery” about his own identity.

“Tommy is very brilliant and probably better at this job than anybody else, but he was not given all the credit he deserved, because of the colonial administration that was in place,” said Sy.

“The whole play is a cat and mouse game between the detective and the primary suspect,” said Jovanni Sy, playwright and artistic director of Gateway Theatre.

“It’s a murder mystery, so we are trying to keep people one step ahead of our detective who is trying to figure out who’s done it, hopefully surprising the audience along the way.”

Sy has long been captivated by stories featuring detectives, and he finds the city of Hong Kong, where he has spent a lot of time acting and directing over the past 10 years, equally absorbing.

For him, Hong Kong is his “second artistic home,” and a former metropole unrivaled in culture, history, art and music.

“I say mystery in the sense of what is it like to be a Chinese man in a Chinese society that’s ruled by the British; how did he succeed as somebody who is on the margins.”

Crime mystery drama Nine Dragons will stage at Gateway Theatre April 12 - 21.

The drama is directed by Craig Hall and stars actor John Ng, best known for his role as Mr. Chin in Kim’s Convenience.

He hopes the audience will not only be captivated by the story, but will also get an idea of what life was like 100 years ago, through the lens of an accomplished but underrated Chinese detective.

A Richmond trio of Chinese zither (a 21 Strings Chinese traditional instrument) players, will debut at Vancouver’s Sound of Dragon Music Festival this weekend.

21 Strings Plus, a band born in a garage in central Richmond seven months ago, consists of three professional Chinese zither players from China.

Oliver Gold, 13, has a role in Cabaret.

A Richmond 13-year-old is gearing up for a role in the Liza Minelli-famed Cabaret, starting next week at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster.

This will be the second professional performance for Oliver Gold, who’s in Grade 8 at McMath secondary, after taking up a recent role in Music Man at the Gateway Theatre in Richmond.

According to the people running the Royal City Musical Theatre production, Gold “has a natural soprano voice and loves musical theatre.”

In Cabaret — a classic musical made famous on Broadway since 1966 and on film starring Minelli - Gold plays one of the young initiated Nazi youth members and they sing the powerful and haunting song Tomorrow Belongs to Me, as the Nazi party rises to power.

As well as attending the Gateway Academy, Gold has a lead role in his school’s upcoming play, Is There a Comic in the House.

According to the show’s billing, Cabaret is a “fierce, meaty musical classic.” Based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, Cabaret is set in 1931 Berlin, which is “transitioning from an avant-garde cultural centre to the epicentre of the beginning of Hitler’s totalitarian regime.”

Cabaret runs April 12 to 29, with previews April 12 and 13, followed by the opening night on Saturday, April 14.

“We all graduated from top music academies in China and all love playing the Chinese zither, so we formed this trio to have fun,” said Geling Jiang.

The team has invited two well-known local musicians, Mark Amanini and Ray Zhou, to compose original music for the concert.

Jiang has also adapted some pieces written by German and Korean musicians and invited special guest Xian Wen Hu from China to play a solo at the concert.

Jiang hopes to show the audience a variety of Chinese music by mixing traditional and modern elements and by combining Eastern styles with those from the West.

“People will develop a new understanding of Chinese music by watching our performance. The instrument has 2,400 years of history, but the music it plays can be very modern, diverse and advanced,” said Jiang.

“When people talk about Chinese music, they always think about traditional songs that are replayed in Chinese restaurants during Chinese New Year. But actually it’s much more than that.”

Jiang said they do not limit themselves to traditional Chinese music, but instead, always experiment with new techniques and music styles.

She believes that Chinese instruments can fit in to any orchestra made up of other instruments, and can add to the vibe.

“That’s why we are called 21 Strings ‘Plus’ – the Chinese zither has 21 strings, and we welcome any other instrument

players to join us and create great works together,” said Jiang.

Jiang immigrated to Richmond in 2004 after working as a Chinese traditional musician for two decades in China.

Moving to the then unfamiliar city, she never gave up her music dreams.

Jiang has worked with many professional orchestras and bands and has spent most of her time performing locally and globally in North America, Europe and Asia.

She said that there are many platforms here for people with music expertise, but the biggest hurdle for many immigrants is often language.

“There are many great musicians from other countries, but because of language barriers, they stay in their own communities – which is a pity.

“I took every chance to practise my English; being able to communicate well is so important. And I always took the initiative to approach local musicians or musical groups, and so gradually more and more opportunities opened their doors to me.”

Youth golfers off to great start for season The 2018 Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is off to an impressive start for golfers Tina Jiang and Brycen Ko. The Richmond golfers captured the U15 Girls and Bantam Boys Division respectively at the season-opening MJT Humber College PGM Classic at the University Golf Club in Vancouver.

In a field of 27 players, Jiang fired rounds of 79-75-77 (231) to finish five shots better than 2017 B.C. Bantam Girls champion Angela Arora from Surrey.

Vancouver’s Michelle Liu was two shots further back in third place.

“I think my driver’s distance helped me win the tournament – my highlight was making an eagle on hole 13, and I feel proud to win. My goal this season is to shoot under par at least 10 times, said Jiang.

Chris Crisologo has been named Simon Fraser University’s Male Athlete of the Year.

The Richmond golfer was honoured last week at the 2018 SFU Athletic Awards at The Molson Canadian Theatre at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver. The evening, hosted by Sportsnet radio and television personality, Perry Solkowski, brought together student-athletes and coaches from all 17 varsity programs.

The Lorne Davies Athlete of the Year awards, named after the University’s founding Athletic Director and first football coach, was awarded to cross-country/ track and field standout Julia Howley and Crisologo.

The 22-year-old turned in a season for the ages at SFU. He earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference and West Region Player of the Year honours, and was a NCAA First Team All-American.

Crisologo had a thrilling run at the U.S. Amateur Championship in August, became

Crisologo jumped to the top of the leaderboard thanks to a sizzling 8-under 64 in the second round and never looked back.

He cruised to a four-shot win with a 275 (72-64-66-73) total in the 72-hole stroke play event.

He overcame an impressive field in Buenos Aires, including several big names at the NCAA Division One level. Florida University senior and SEC champion Alejandro Tosti of Argentina finished second at 9-under. Oklahoma Sooner Aaron Terrazas of Mexico and Rafeal Miranda of Ecuador shared third at 8-under.

Crisologo dedicated the win to Harry White who passed away on Jan. 2 after a lengthy illness. White was a major influence in igniting Crisologo’s passion for golf thanks to the popular Junior Linkster Tour he ran for decades.

He is now winding down his collegiate career at SFU, including next month’s NCAA Division II Regionals and National Championships.

A dream season for the Seafair Bantam A1 Islanders has concluded with the biggest win of all.

The Islanders are Western Canada Bantam AAA champions after a dramatic 2-1 victory in double overtime over Alberta’s Airdrie Xtreme on Sunday afternoon in Kamloops. The fiveteam tournament featured provincial winners from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, along with the host Thompson Blazers.

Seafair won three of four round-robin games to reach the final and would be the only team to defeat the high-powered Alberta champions.

An intense final with so much on the line was scoreless until Xtreme captain Craig Armstrong broke the deadlock just past the midway mark of the third period. The Islanders dug deep and Michael Abgrall fed a trailing Jaden Uy in the slot area and he wired home the equalizer with 2:22 remaining.

A 10-minute overtime solved nothing and was followed by a full intermission before Thomas Tien ended the drama with the biggest goal of his young life after a terrific rush

by Austin Kofler to get him the puck as he charged the net.

“That was one of or the best game the kids have played all year. Each time after the period I came back to the guys and said I couldn’t ask for anything more from them,” said Seafair head coach Steve Robinson. “Everybody was checking and everybody was playing.

They could hold their head high no matter what happened.

“The notable thing about Thomas was in the game against (Saskatchewan the day before) our 5-1 goal was the most celebrated because it was his first in something like 28 games. He had a bunch of assists but was snake-bitten.

He ended up with three goals in five games at Westerns. We talked about secondary scoring being a key and it couldn’t have gone any better.”

A rock-solid two-goalie rotation has paid off all season and the formula worked to perfection once again.

Seafair had opened the championships with a 5-4 win over the host Blazers. Kofler broke a 3-3 tie midway through the third period and insurance goal that followed from Carson Bigras proved to be the difference.

A twinbill Good Friday began with the big win over Airdrie to put the Islanders in the driver’s seat. Abgrall tied the game and a couple of quick goals in the third from Davis Sato and Kofler secured Seafair’s second straight victory.

“We had moments in that game where we were reeling,” admitted Robinson. “They were up 1-0 in the first eight minutes of the second period and we barely made it out of our zone.

I had to to burn a timeout (midway through the second) because I felt like we were going to get buried. We calmed the team down, pushed back and we got out of the second 1-0 and then came back and had a massive third.

“I kind of felt like we were opportunistic to win that game. We didn’t carry the game but we played okay. It was clear to me Airdrie was a very good team. To beat these guys twice was going to be tough.”

An opportunity to lock up a spot in the final with a game to spare evaporated when Manitoba champion Winnipeg Hawks stormed back for a 4-3 win. Seafair led 3-0 after 20 minutes on goals by Jacob Bonkowski, Sato and Uy. The Hawks scored twice in the second then completed the comeback with two more in the third, outshooting the Islanders 42-30 on the night.

It was their first loss since early December in Pacific Coast Amateur Tier One league play, a stretch of over 30 games. The Hawks went on to earn the bronze medal.

Seafair wasted little time returning to the win column — punching its ticket to the gold medal game with a dominating 9-3 triumph over the winless West Central Wheat Kings on Saturday afternoon.

champions with a hat trick, while Abgrall had four points, including a goal. Tsang stopped 18 shots.

An outstanding tournament for Josh Wessels earned him the Top Defenceman Award, along with a spot on the All-Tournament Team that was based only on round-robin play.

The Islanders finished the season as winners of the Pacific Coast tier one regular season and playoff titles, along with being the first team from Seafair to ever win the provincial championship in B.C. Hockey’s top Bantam tier. Ironically, it’s the final time as a strictly Seafair entry with the association merging with Richmond Minor next season.

“It was my last game with Seafair after seven years and Seafair’s last game game after 54 years. You can’t make this stuff up. To come together the way these boys did was unbelievable,” added Robinson.

The boys dedicated the win to their strength and conditioning coach Scott Hebert who passed away the same weekend as the Islanders won provincial championship in Nanaimo.

The same can be said of an association executive.

As Richmond City Baseball officially welcomes another season on Saturday with its Opening Day celebration at Palmer (11 a.m.), the organization continues to buck the current trend for youth sports by growing in numbers.

Sure, provincial contending teams in the high-profile College Prep and 15U AAA age groups don’t hurt, but it’s paying attention to the core house level that leads to player retention.

An influx of new players at the 13U level had resulted in little success for Richmond teams in regular season play.

Roughly 60 percent of the total registration was new to the game and that number shot up to 80 percent once the top 24 kids were pulled out to play “AA” ball. RCBA teams had not won a game outside of Richmond in two years.

The RCBA president met with coaches and restructured the division completely. Two teams will continue to play an Interlock schedule while new players will be part of a development program where they can progress at their own pace.

“We decided to offer two types of registration. One for ‘A’ ball and travelling and the other for in-house development.

They will get to work with (RCBA director of player development) David (Van Ostrand) a couple of times a week and play an inter squad game,” explained Braaten.

“No one has done this before but I don’t want a kid to play White Rock and get killed 15-0. The objective is to get them comfortable with no pressure and eventually send them out. They will also get to play our travel teams at some point and enter a tournament the May long weekend.”

Braaten also pointed out how the inhouse program will be attractive to the multi-sport athlete that doesn’t want to make a big commitment to baseball.
