In case you haven’t noticed, anything with a whiff of Steveston tends to be, shall we say, highly expressed upon.

Even during Peak Rain, you’re bound to find a tinderbox.

Today, we’re finally (I think) seeing the conclusion of one of those darn fires — the Onni saga at the Imperial Landing waterfront. Now, gear up for the next great sagas.

Leading the pack is a new Steveston Community Centre.

It’s a conversation that may have more meaning than at first glance, as rumour isI the site could densify to include affordable housing, perhaps for seniors — a telling proposal.

Regardless of whether this becomes a reality, it reflects a trend. Just a stone’s throw away, a 107-unit seniors housing complex at the Steveston Buddhist Temple is coming. With The Maple Residences up and running and a new Lions Manor in the works, you may be seeing a pattern developing.

Statistics Canada tells us that, in Steveston, baby-generating millennials packed into condos are outnumbered by geriatric boomers in near empty homes, by about two to one.

And regardless of age, as population growth isn’t subsiding, the pressure to build up will increase.

So, decisions will need to be made on not just what kind of community centre people want, but also who it’s for. The same can generally be said about housing, where some new condos are being marketed to downsizing boomers.

And there’s a lot more food for thought: Save-On Foods is coming; the Phoenix Seine Net Loft is being restored for $11.5 million; Garry Point Park is getting a new $2 million pier; and No. 2 Road, south of Steveston Highway, is being widened and getting a bike path for $12.5 million.

In the long term, residents will surely be tasked to either defend farmland east of No. 2 or let development spread, perhaps under the guise of affordable housing. Along their new bike path, some may be mindful of past encrochments on farmland that has resulted in a row of mega mansions.

Awaiting more feedback are pliable plans to revamp Moncton and Chatham streets for better pedestrian use (planter benches, special lights etc.) and to further develop Bayview Street. Meanwhile Coun. Harold Steves is pushing to better inform the public about our Indigenous roots at Britannia. I’m curious to see if the Sakata home and garden on First Avenue is spared by the city.

Of course, parking and transit will be discussed beyond our deaths.

The Village is so hotly debated because, as the de facto capital of the palatial state of West Richmond, it remains the city’s political, historical and cultural hub — although it increasingly shares that distinction with the Chinese temples, malls and restaurants.

MP protecting rights Storeys is about more of some, not others than folks with addiction Dear Editor, MP Alice Wong has publicized her letter to Service Canada, refusing to validate Summer Jobs Applications over Human Rights Declaration, claiming political interference.

I am not a federal Liberal Party supporter, and I certainly do not agree with much of what they have done or failed to do; but, when it comes to applications for government grants, I am 100 per cent in agreement with the condition of respect for individual rights, even those of people whose beliefs you don’t share.

Wong appears to have issue with the statement: “Both the job and my organization’s core mandate respect individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and

Freedoms as well as other rights. These include reproductive rights and the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour, mental or physical disability or sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.”

Wong claims applicants must attest that they share certain values with the Liberal Party of Canada.

In point of fact, applicants only need to agree to respect individual human rights that we enjoy in this country.

So, I’d like to know, Alice, precisely which of the listed individual rights you or your constituents will not agree to respect?

In my view, a government grant is not a right but a privilege and I detect a sense of entitlement

from those who complain about the required attestation.

If an applicant’s core mandate does not respect all of these individual rights, I don’t want my government funding them.

It is their right to lobby or promote against any of the listed rights, but I certainly don’t expect their lobby to be supported by my tax dollars, nor should it be.

In my view, Wong is doing nothing more than grandstanding and pandering to those who think they are entitled to government grants and that The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms should protect their right to disrespect and limit the rights of others who don’t share their beliefs.

Dear Editor,

I am one of the people who live in a unit in the new Storeys building and would like to respond to your article.

You refer to Storeys residents as “people with vulnerabilities such as poverty, addiction, mental health problems and abuse.”

Yes, there are some people who suffer with these afflictions, but I know that many people (my neighbours) who live here, do not look at it this way. This is our home. You have made it sound like people who live here are all affected in some manner.

In closing, I have enjoyed food from Storeys Café and admire the wonderful work the Plant sisters are doing. (Brenda Plant is the executive director of Turning Point and Marnie Plant is Turning Point’s special projects manager helping develop Storey’s Café.)

We are happy to live in a brand new building which is well kept and well managed.

Safeway staff will be missed Dear Editor We’re losing our Safeway store at the Broadmoor shopping centre. It isn’t the only Safeway store being closed in Richmond, but it’s our store and has been a part of our community; serving it since 1964.

When we first heard about the closure, nothing changed that much. Everything was still available with only a few gaps here and there.

It’s much different now. There

are large areas of empty shelves. Some of our favourite things are no longer there and we know they won’t be reordered and restocked.

A recent English case presents an interesting capacity issue. A daughter won an injunction blocking her father from marrying his girlfriend, with whom he had been living for 20 years. He is afflicted with Alzheimer’s.

In England, marriage revokes a Will (but it does not in B.C.). The Judge ruled that the father had capacity to marry, but not to make a Will.

Therefore, as you might expect, his three daughters received much less under the intestacy distribution than under their father’s Will. The marriage proceeded.

The evidence of capacity is often complex, and doubtless these kinds of cases will arise more in future as Dementia rates rise.

Dear Editor, Lately I’ve been noticing a lot of negativity in the newspaper. There is a lot of anger over things such as the cause of housing prices, the proposed units for homeless people and students going to schools out of their catchment area to name a few. People are right to have their frustrations as these are all important things that affect many, but must our focus always be on the negative?

A friend of mine was fired from their job recently. The sudden decision left them in a panic, not knowing how they would make ends meet. They also feel they might have to give up their dog, who has been an emotional support and great friend to them, as

they don’t know if they can afford to feed and care for it anymore. The lack of compassion shown to my friend caused a lot of disruption in their life.

As someone who volunteers with homeless youth, I have learned to not take anything for granted. In the wake of the Humboldt and Toronto tragedies, I think we should try and hold on to what is positive in our lives as we never know when it will be taken away from us. If we can strengthen the bridges that connect us, instead of choosing to tear them down, I think we’ll be able to help one another move forward while adding positivity to our community.

Is council captured? a detrimental effect on farming in Richmond.

Dear Editor, If you look at any real estate ad for ALR land in Richmond today (11 months after council enacted a bylaw to cap house size at 10, 753 square feet on all farmland lots above 0.5 acres/0.2 hectares) you will see what is being sold is not the land’s potential to grow food but the problematic fact that you can build mansions on the ALR and avail of tax breaks with nominal farming activity.

The size and siting of the house on farmland is totally within the power of the municipal/ city government and has always been so.

And, yes, the size and siting of the house is an effective tool for curtailing speculation.

You only have to look at the example of Delta and their much more restrictive house size and the associated 80 per cent rate of farmland utilization to attest this idea.

What has happened on Richmond’s ALR under the watch of the current council and mayor is completely the opposite.

According to Richmond FarmWatch, “50 farms were lost to residential development just within the last year.” This is evidence that residential speculation on farmland is having

What we see on farmland in Richmond is not just a result of market forces but a distortion of market caused by what economists call “regulatory capture.”

According to Wikipedia, “Regulatory capture is a form of government failure which occurs when a regulatory agency, created to act in the public interest, instead advances the commercial or political concerns of special interest groups that dominate the industry or sector it is charged with regulating.”

So far, Richmond’s city council (as regulator) has failed to provide effective regulation that will protect Richmond’s ALR from mansion building and instead seems to have given in to vested interests that would prefer to see speculation grow on farmland without any regard to how it is affecting agriculture.

I hope next time around, the council and mayor will address this problem effectively and not ignore the “Made in Richmond” realities on the ALR.

On the fringes of Richmond’s City Centre area, Eckersley Road is transitioning from a detached home neighbourhood to a street lined with townhouses. As such, many of the homes are in derelict condition. The house in question sold in January 2016 for $1.8 million and is now assessed at $2.2 million.

Just before 6 p.m., Richmond Fire-Rescue were called to a townhouse complex at 10680 Springmont Drive. While crews were initially responding to reports of smoke, the call was quickly upgraded to a first alarm fire as flames could be seen from the townhouse.

with second degree burns lying in the front yard. He was transported to hospital, but died from his injuries. His name is not being released as family are still being notified.

The cause of fire is still under investigation and those in neighbouring units were not injured and have since returned to their homes.

The bodies, of Keri Smith, 36, and Terrence Peter Smith, 37, were found inside a detached home across the street from Cook elementary park after Richmond RCMP responded to reports of gun fire on Eckersley Road at 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Should Richmond City Council make it difficult to set up cannabis retail shops in the city, residents will nevertheless be able to order products online via the provincial government’s new retailer BC Cannabis Stores.

The new public, government-operated non-medical cannabis store is branded similarly to BC Liquor Stores, announced Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, April 26 in Victoria.

Farnworth announced legislation that lays the groundwork for how cannabis will be distributed and sold in B.C. once the federal government legalizes the drug this summer.

According to the government: The proposed Cannabis Control and Licensing Act (CCLA) establishes provincial control over the sale, supply and possession of non-medical cannabis, and establishes licensing of private cannabis retailers, including registration and training requirements for those who will work in cannabis retail. B.C. Minister of Finance Carole James says her government is cracking down on tax evasion within the opaque world of pre-sale condo assignments.

Last week’s announcement, to require real estate developers to collect and report information on pre-sale condo assignments, comes five months after Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced it was investigating select developments in Toronto and Vancouver.

“For too long, people who resell condos before they have been built have been inflating real estate prices, without necessarily paying taxes on their gains,” said James, via a statement.

“We are making it fairer for people who want to buy a condo, by making sure those who flip pre-sale condos are paying their fair share.”

Prior to a development being constructed, speculative buyers may pay a deposit for the right to buy a unit upon completion at presentday pricing. If the market price rises in the intervening years of construction, the buyer could sell (assign) the pre-sale contract (the right

to buy) and reap a large profit. This is perfectly legal as long as the transaction is recorded and the appropriate capital gains or business taxes are paid.

As the debate on house sizes on Richmond farmland continues to roil, Ian Paton, a Delta councillor and BC Liberal MLA for Delta South, says speculators are walking away from his city after learning it has house size restrictions on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) that are in line with residential neighbourhoods.

“I’m proud of Delta’s record on quickly adopting the bylaw standards for home sizes on the ALR,” Paton, opposition critic for agriculture, told the Delta Optimist last month.

It is largely accepted that larger house sizes contribute to increased land value

and therefore speculation.

Also largely accepted is the fact overpriced farmland due to speculation imperils commercial viability for farmers — especially younger ones — across Canada and in Richmond, where farmland is now frequently listed for about $1 million per acre.

A recent Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry report notes “rising farmland prices threaten the viability of the family farm.”

In Richmond, one may build a farmland house roughly three times larger than in Delta. City council is reviewing, again, whether house size on farmland should be more in line with nearby residential properties.

As council collectively delays its decision whether

to reduce farmland house sizes, there has been a rush of applications (61 in total) to get building permits for redevelopment on the ALR, according to the city.

Meanwhile, public comments on a review of the Agricultural Land Reserve, including house sizes, by the Ministry of Agriculture concludes this week, just after Metro Vancouver regional government resolved to ask the provincial government to create legally binding house size standards across municipalities.

Exemplifying the difference in land values between Richmond and Delta are blueberry farms presently listed on MLS. Whether, or how much, house size regulations is a factor depends on who answers this question.

Richmond has million dollar acres In Delta, where house sizes are limited to about 3,600 square feet, an 80-acre blueberry farm at 5606 96 Street is listed for $9.8 million, or $122,500 per acre. In Richmond, where houses can be built up to about 10,800 square feet, a 25-acre blueberry farm at 9331 Sidaway Road is listed for $9.7 million, or $388,000 per acre.

According to the late land use economist Richard Wozny, any size limits greater than neighbouring residential areas boosts the price of farmland. As such, Wozny penned an analysis to the City of Richmond last year stating any limit above 4,200 square feet will overvalue farmland.

But Gunraj Gill, spokesperson for Richmond Farmland Owners Association, said house size is not necessarily a factor in rising land values. Although he said he could not speak to these specific examples, he noted that factors such as proximity to an urban core

as well as land improvements, can explain price differences.

Bill Li, the realtor representing the Delta property, said the farm is in excellent condition with many upgrades and the listing is priced competitively. Realtor Layla Yang who advertised the Sidaway listing did not reply to questions from the Richmond News.

Li said he cannot conclude that larger house sizes in Richmond contribute to higher prices. However, he noted a 10,000 square foot mansion could cost five to 10 million dollars to construct.

The owners association is at odds with advocacy group Richmond FarmWatch, which wants the city to reduce ALR house sizes to 4,200 square feet, but seems willing to accept ministry guidelines of about 5,400 square feet.

Laura Gillanders of FarmWatch says most ALR listings in Richmond rarely mention farm capacities.

For instance, realtor Patsy Hui has a 10-acre farm at 12331 Gilbert Road listed for $9.8 million, or nearly $1 million per acre.

The two groups, the association and FarmWatch, do agree council is delaying the process unnecessarily. Gill said the rush of applications is because there is uncertainty from the city.

Gillanders says speculators are snapping up the permits.

“These are not farmers. If farmers need a big house they always have the option of applying for a variance,” said Gillanders.

But Gill wants the city and province to focus on policy tools to bring more farmland into production. That could mean tax reforms or lease incentives, he said.

Is it time for a shakeup at Richmond City Council? A group of residents dubbing themselves the “Driveway Party” thinks so.

What started out as a weekly gathering for a group of friends to drink beer, talk politics and discuss issues in the neighbourhood has grown into a bid for council in this October’s municipal election. For Kevin Coles, who suggested the idea to his friends, Richmond’s council needs a change.

“A lot of us aren’t happy with the way things have been in Richmond,” Coles told the Richmond News.

“Most of us feel the politicians here don’t really represent what people want. At least on the surface, they seem to have more of a vested interest in what the developers want… than they do in the people.”

Coles, who has lived in Richmond his whole life, said his five friends, posted on the Driveway Party’s website as council candidates, didn’t think he was serious when he pitched the idea. But now, a platform for the team is in the works.

After hosting several community sessions on proposed housing for vulnerable and homeless people on Elmbridge Way, the City of Richmond will hold an additional information session on Thursday, May 10 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at city hall.

“We recognized that due to scheduling and also the size limit on those sessions, not everybody that’s interested in the issue had an opportunity participate,” said Ted Townsend, spokesperson for the city.

“So we wanted to provide another opportunity for them to come in to ask questions and get the information they are looking for.”

The session will be a drop-in style open house with information boards, where staff from the city, BC Housing and RainCity Housing will be in attendance to answer any questions, explained Townsend.

Interpreters for Mandarin and Cantonese speakers will be available to assist with conversations and the information boards will be translated into Chinese “to meet the expressed needs of the community,” he added.

Townsend emphasized that the open house is not a public hearing and will not include a vote or an opportunity to delegate to council.

Residents will have a chance to state their opinions and delegate to council at an open council meeting in the future before any decision is made on the project. The city will announce the date later.

Theatre king resigns Alyse Kotyk RICHMOND NEWS

After nearly seven years in the role of artistic director, Gateway Theatre’s Jovanni Sy will be stepping down.

Last week, the Richmondbased theatre announced a leadership change, which will come into effect on Feb. 16, 2019. Sy stepped into the role of artistic director in April 2012 and helped Gateway launch its Chinese-language Pacific Festival in 2014.

“Jovanni has been a visionary leader for Gateway, bringing the wider community together and inviting more people to experience professional live theatre. The board and I are extremely grateful for what he has accomplished,” said John Watson, chair of the theatre’s board, in a press release.

“We need only look at the diverse audiences attending

Inspirational teacher struck a chord that had once belonged to the CBC, Al had built a musical fortress into which one could disappear for days and not come out.

Allan Anderson wasn’t the most famous music teacher in B.C., but he was certainly one of the best; and I mourn his recent passing.

I first encountered him as a shy Grade 7 student through Richmond School District’s legendary Summer Band program. At that time I found him a bit intimidating, as he was the first teacher who treated me like an adult, with grown-up expectations.

A few years later, I saw his McNair Secondary Choir perform at Gateway Theatre, and determined that I simply must finish my final two years of senior high school in his program. The music program at McNair exceeded my wildest dreams, as he had attracted a pool of students who were ultra-talented.

As a teacher, Al was very ahead of his time.

He was one of the first to recognize the power of the new technology in music production and composition, something everyone with a laptop computer takes for granted today.

He had a natural business acumen that is rare among teachers, and was able to solicit grants and funds to purchase equipment that few programs possessed at that time. Operating out of an old building beside McNair

think about music programs today — gone are the elite programs by audition only. We now attempt to appeal to a much wider group of the student body.

His achievements were considerable: he regularly entered regional and national festivals, taking home awards while competing against larger public schools and private schools with twice the budget and resources.

A coterie of students who graduated from his program became music professionals or embarked on careers in the arts, including the well known Suspenders vocal group and jazz musician Sharon Minemoto.

As a mentor, Al was without peer. He gave me some of my most valuable advice regarding work/life balance. He recognized that the role of a music teacher is a special one for many students: part teacher, part friend, part mentor. When you are doing something as personal as making music with other people, a bond is formed that exceeds the normal confines of the curriculum. He also knew that music teaching could be an all-consuming profession, and that you needed to guard your family and personal time.

However, he was not a teacher who was obsessed with awards. He was the kind of teacher who could almost instantly source out what you were good at, and if you expressed interest in something, he would hand you the tools and say, “Why don’t you go do that?”

As a teacher and parent myself, I now recognize that it is not always easy to stand back and grant people the independence to learn for themselves and discover their abilities.

However, he didn’t suffer fools gladly; if you were late to one of his rehearsals, you were sure to be greeted with the witty, acerbic line “Thanks for making a guest appearance!”

He would often say to me, when I was doing my teaching practicum with him, “Michael, we don’t teach music — we teach students!” As a music teacher myself, I have come to understand the meaning of those words and try to live by them.

He was a teacher, a mentor, a friend. I know I speak for many of his students when I say we will greatly miss his presence, his enthusiasm, and his passion for music.

The Titanic, once thought “unsinkable”, was the world’s largest ship in 1912 but was destroyed after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage. Now, a major international exhibition about the tragedy will stop at Lipont Place in Richmond this summer.

The world-class Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, running from June 23, 2018 through to Jan. 11, 2019, will explore the Titanic’s compelling human stories, which are told through more than 120 authentic artifacts and extensive recreations.

Visitors will travel back 106 years and be issued replica boarding passes — the same that were issued to passengers aboard the Titanic. The chronological voyage through the Titanic will chart the ship’s construction, life on-board, the ill-fated sinking and recent artifact rescue efforts.

People will also be able to marvel at the re-created accommodations and press their palms against an iceberg while learning about countless stories.

Toni Zhang McAfee, executive director of Lipont Place, told the Richmond News that the gallery was selected because of its spaciousness and convenient location. As well, the building will be turned into the shape of Titanic during the exhibition.

“At Lipont Place the Titanic exhibition will find a natural home allowing both the venue and the exhibition to make

their debut in Metro Vancouver,” said McAfee.

“We look forward to welcoming all visitors, local and international, to the magnificent space and this worldclass exhibition.”

The exhibition is produced

by Premier Exhibitions, Inc., an Atlanta-based company that is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Titanic, its wreck site and all her passengers and crew through programs and exhibitions.

Before coming to Richmond, the exhibition had already visited cities such as Paris, Las Vegas, Dublin, Stockholm, London, Cape Town, Guangzhou, Orlando and Melbourne.

Four unusual guests paid a visit to McKay elementary last week.

The guests were a Harris’s hawk, a (descented) striped skunk, a laughing kookaburra and a caiman lizard.

More than 200 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 attended a special class with the critters in the school’s gym.

The classes are delivered by a national organization called Earth Rangers, which aims to help children learn about and engage with the environment and animal behaviour.

Presenters also let the hawk fly above students’ heads in the room, provoking a lot of laughter.

Gill told the students that while some animals may not be likable, they still make important contributions to the environment.

The skunk, for example, helps the ecosystem by eating things that other animals don’t like.

Students were also shown a video about how climate change is threatening certain animals, such as the snowshoe hare, a rabbit that disguises itself by changing its hair colour according to different climates.

“We have a team of over 52 different animal ambassadors from all over the world for this program,” said Chris Gill, presenter and animal handler of the Earth Rangers.

“I learned that we play a huge part in protecting wildlife, and that there is so much we can do,” said Hannah, a student, adding that the class was very interactive and fun compared to regular nature classes.

“We found that kids really connect with the live animal aspect of the show and that it really helps them connect with the wildlife we have here in Canada.”

Student Ziad said he learned about climate change and how some animals are in danger. He is eager to do more to help the environment.

“I even recall a (female) judge saying I needed to wear a scarf over my jacket, because she wanted me covered up to my neck. That was humiliating.

“I would be hard pressed to find a female criminal lawyer who hasn’t experienced it.

The shoes are a huge thing; ‘those heels are too high,’ or ‘your top is too low, you need to pull that up.’

“We have to make decisions as female lawyers that men don’t have to make. I have to think, ‘should I wear red lipstick today,’ ‘should I curl my hair,’ ‘should I wear pants or a skirt?’

Richmond lawyer Sarah Leamon founded the Women’s Association of Criminal Lawyers (WACL) just over a month ago to shed light on what she claims is overt sexism in B.C.’s courtrooms. Alan Campell photo comes in, citing studies – including a recent one done in Ontario by the Law Society – that illustrate criminal law in particular being a very difficult field for women to work. “(That study) found that women were entering criminal law at the same rate as men, but were leaving so much faster than men, and faster than any other area of law,” she added.

“They found that more than 60 per cent of women in criminal law were thinking of leaving. They felt isolated. Most criminal defense lawyers are sole practitioners and it’s hard to create meaningful work relationships.

“I basically work 24 hours a day, seven days a week; I have to be on call. Many women have families to run and children to look after and that lack of parity (in numbers) feeds the discriminatory attitudes and sexism in a continually male-dominated bar.”

Ironically, Leamon said her local court around the corner is actually one of the

friendliest in the province for female lawyers.

“There seems to be more female Crown Counsel members and there seems to be more sense of community; I’ve always been treated very well there,” she said.

Leamon said she wants to hear from other women in similar positions and wants to know “what they need and what is the best way to support them.

“I’ve heard of some women asking about networking opportunities, to be able to go out, get together over a drink and set up mentorship opportunities.”

So far, Leamon said WACL has been well received among her peers, with many commenting that she is “filling a gap in the field.”

Ultimately, concluded Leamon, she wants “to be able to make it more comfortable and more inclusive (in the profession) and have gender parity.

“I want women to enter criminal law and stay around.”

In a bid to survive and thrive, the Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) has made a slight course correction along with a number of changes.

RCCS said goodbye to two of its three full-time staff recently — including the retir-

ing, long-time executive director Henry Beh – to reduce costs at its home on Westminster Highway at Buswell Street.

Since then, the volunteer board of directors has picked up the slack at the mainly Cantonese-speaking non-profit and started reaching out to the Mandarinspeaking community in Richmond.

The move, according to

RCCS president Linda Li, has worked out very well, with more than 400 new recruits signing up for the organization that already had more than 1,000 active members.

And, as well as providing social events and classes for the city’s Chinese community, RCCS is currently writing a joint grant application with the predominantly Englishspeaking Minoru Seniors Society 21

Community Centre inches ahead the replacement of the Steveston Community Centre as a priority project for 20162026.

With two rounds of open public consultations under its belt, the Steveston Community Centre is slowly moving forward with many ideas, but few concrete plans.

In January, the City of Richmond circulated a public survey through Let’sTalkRichmond. ca that allowed residents to identify what they wanted to see in a new facility. In April, another opportunity for online input as well as a town hall meeting were held to get feedback on initial proposals for the community space.

“We said, ‘here are some of the types of spaces that would fit the needs and wants identified by the community’ and asked for the public to comment and respond to that,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

“We’ll take all of that information from both rounds of consultation and use that to formulate a report back to council on some potential options for what the new community centre could look like.”

While Townsend said it’s likely that an entirely new building would be constructed rather than renovating the old centre, it’s not known where the exact location of the new facility would be.

“We have not determined a location for the new centre, whether it would be on the old site or somewhere else within the park,” he said.

Whether a new building would would be used for housing units as well is also still to be determined.

“At this point all we’re looking at is what do we need for a new community centre,” Townsend said. “We’re trying to get that tied down and then once we go forward then it would be up to council to provide additional direction.”

Golf standout pays tribute to Harry White Chris Crisologo will be winding down his decorated collegiate career when Simon Fraser University heads to Texas next week for the NCAA Super Regional.

The Richmond native also has a busy summer ahead of him as a member of Canada’s national amateur team. He credits his passion for competitive golf to Harry White — the longtime supporter of junior golf who sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 72.

In his own words, Crisologo pays tribute to White and how he was inspired by him.

The one question I get asked often is ‘why did you choose golf?’ The short and quick answer I like to give is that my dad thought it was a good idea to introduce me to all sports and see which one stuck.

Here’s the long story that got me hooked to competitive golf, one that seems very fitting.

Golf really isn’t the most affordable sport in the world. Golf clubs cost money. Golf tournaments cost money. Travelling to golf tournaments cost money. Fortunately, at one of the local driving ranges in Richmond, a piece of yellow paper caught my mom’s attention.

‘tour’ held a number of tournaments throughout the year. These events were very affordable and something that her 7 year-old son could possibly enjoy. Me being me, I was mortified at the idea of trying something new and doing something different.

There were too many of them. On top of that, there was etiquette to the game. There was just no way I would be able to play the game. That all changed when I met Mr. Harry 34 White.

Remembering Harry White Harry was the coordinator of the Junior Linkster Tour Canada in BC. He had a passion for the game and that showed throughout his tour. Respect, sportsmanship and camaraderie were the biggest themes.

I remember at the beginning of the year, there would be a rules seminar, where all the junior golfers would attend and learn the rules and etiquette of the sport. Sure, there were a lot of them and sure you had to get 7-to-12-year-olds to pay attention for a couple hours, but the amazing part was that he did it. It was all based on respect and all the kids would listen.

Leung sisters recognized for standout collegiate seasons

The Leung sisters from Richmond have been recognized for their impressive seasons with the Simon Fraser University women’s golf team.

Estee Leung was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Freshman of the Year.

At the recent GNAC Championship, she led after the first round, shooting an evenpar 71. It was the only round of par or better shot in the tournament. Estee went on to finish third, her highest placing of the

season. She held a 79.5 scoring average, which ranked eighth in the conference.

Back in late March, she earned Player of the Week honours after leading SFU at the Otter Invitational with a 5-over par 76.

Meanwhile, her older sister Emily was named to GNAC All-Conference First Team for the third straight year.One of just two players to play in all 10 SFU tournaments this season, Emily paced the team with four top-10 finishes. She finished second in the conference at 78 strokes per round.

Blueliner taking her game to NCAA Div. 1 level It was her second season playing on the Sabres’ U19 prep team. She was one of six players to sign her National Letter of Intent back in November. The Sabres also had eight named to U18 national teams, including Vorster and Newfounland’s Maggie Connors on Team Canada. That stint concluded in January with a bronze medal at the World Championships in Russia.

From Minnesota to Connecticut. That’s the next stop in Courtney Vorster’s promising hockey career.

The 18-year-old Richmond blueliner is taking her game to NCAA Division One next fall at Quinnipiac University. She is one of six players in the Bobcats’ 2022 recruiting class and is expected to make an immediate impact for a team that went 1617-3 this past season and bowed out in the quarter-finals of the East Coast Athletic Conference playoffs.

Vorster won a silver a year before in Canadian colours and was joined by goaltender Kendra Woodland as the lone B.C. players on the 2018 team.

Vorster had the attention of NCAA scouts long ago and actually made a verbal commitment to Quinnipiac back in 2016. ”Representing her school, province, and country, Courtney has shown an ability to lead, raise her level of play in high pressure situations, and make tremendous contributions to winning teams at both ends of the ice,” said head coach Cassandra Turner.

“Her poise with the puck, her ability to think the game, and her growth into an elite level defender have her prepared to immediately succeed at this level.

Vorster recently concluded a three-year stint at Shattuck-St.

Her journey to becoming one of the country’s top up-and-coming players included a number of years playing for boys teams where she more than held her own.

Vorster was named MVP with the Seafair Islanders Bantam A1 squad during the the 2014-15 season. Two years earlier, she captained Richmond Minor’s top Pee Wee boys rep team. She also spent time in Delta Hockey Academy’s skill development program.

Along the way, she has received tremendous family support, including her older hockey playing brothers Ryan and Devon who just won the Cyclone Taylor Cup as a member of the Richmond Sockeyes.

Gawdin captains Swift Current to first trip to WHL finals in 25 years

Glenn Gawdin is sure making his final season in the Western Hockey League a memorable and lasting one.

The 21-year-old Richmond native has captained the Swift Current Broncos to the WHL finals for the first time in 25 years after a 5-1 game six road victory over the Lethbridge Hur-

ricanes on Monday night.

Gawdin will get the opportunity to play just two hours from his hometown when the Broncos take on the Everett Silvertips in the championship series. Games one and two are in Swift Current before the teams head to the West Coast for games three and four next Tuesday

and Wednesday. If necessary, game five would also be played in Everett on May 11.

Monday’s game six win finally ended the home ice dominance in the Lethbridge series.

Gawdin returned to the line-up in Saturday’s 4-3 game five win after missing both contests in Lethbridge with an injury.

He had a pair of assists in the clincher and sits fifth in league playoff scoring with 25 points in 18 games, including nine goals.

The Calgary Flames prospect had a huge regular season, finishing second in league scoring with 125 points in 67 games, including 56 goals.

U15 Air Attack Gold certainly saved its best for last to produce a historic and stunning victory at last weekend’s Volleyball B.C. Club Provincial Championships in Abbotsford.

The 11th seeded Richmond-based squad came out of nowhere to capture gold among the 19 entries — becoming the first-ever Air Attack boys team to win a B.C. title at the top Division One level.

Marcus Lam was named the tournament’s MVP while teammates Mackenzie Hui and Amos Cheng earned all-star honours.

The team also includes: Willy Billedo, Russell Chan, Aiden Chin, Micah Funk, Aidan Huynh, Austin Kofler, Jordan Lee and Owen Liu.

The thrilling run concluded Saturday night with a three-set win over Vancouver Apex Ignite. Air Attack dropped the first game 25-21, rallied for a 25-21 game two win then took the decisive set 15-13.

It was a similar script they had been following all weekend that saw them thrive under adversity.

The semi-final triumph over Okanagan’s Sky Black was capped by an 18-16 third set win after been romped 25-11 in the opener.

HEALTH CARE HITS CLOSE TO HOME FOR XIBITA, A LONG-TIME FOUNDATION SUPPORTER

Xibita, a local company that produces large scale, innovative trade show displays and graphic designs, has called Richmond home for three decades. Xibita recognizes the importance of heath care being a cornerstone of its community, and has been a generous supporter and sponsor of Richmond Hospital Foundation for over 15 years. Xibita contributes spectacular, large-format digital printing and sophisticated site signage that help ignite excitement at Richmond Hospital Foundation’s annual fundraising events including the Golf Tournament in June and Starlight Gala in October.

“It’s been a great relationship,” says senior account manager, Brian Keobke.

“We’ve been so fortunate in our level of success as a company that it’s just deeply ingrained in our culture that we should give back to the community.

Nobody succeeds by themselves. You need the support of the community,” Brian offers a knowing smile, “Especially the hospital.”

Like many other businesses, Xibita came to experience firsthand the need for health care nearby when one day last January, Brian relied on Richmond Hospital to save his life.

“Like many men, I almost died from stubbornness,” Brian says with a laugh.

Brian was experiencing xperiencing chest ches pains at his desk. But thanks to quick thinking by a co-worker and thoroughness by Richmond Hospital staff, Brian is still here to talk about it. Xibita’s creative director Ken Button insisted on taking Brian to Richmond Hospital when Brian described his symptoms. But Brian initially resisted getting medical help. “On the drive over, I kept asking Ken to just get me some antacid so we could go back to the office. January is our busiest month!” Turns out, Ken’s instincts were bang on. Brian had suffered a minor heart attack.

Given its size, initial tests couldn’t reveal the attack. But the Emergency physician knew something serious was happening and admitted him. “I wanted to be discharged”, explains Brian, “But my doctor didn’t want me to leave until he understood exactly what was going on.” Then, as Brian was being transferred to a hospital room, he suffered a full tilt heart attack.

Soon, Brian was sent for a procedure then returned to Richmond Hospital for monitoring. “It was just a remarkable level of care. I couldn’t believe it,” says Brian.

Brian was back managing Xibita accounts within days of his surgery. He’s grateful for the care he received and thankful it’s not only Richmond residents who can rely on excellent medical help in their community, but fellow businesses can also trust in the top notch care Richmond Hospital provides.

Southeast Asian Restaurant A Feast for the Senses in Richmond

f you’re craving excellent Thai and Malaysian food in Richmond, look no further than Tropika Lansdowne Centre. Opened in 2013, it’s the second location of the business. The original location was opened on Denman Street in 1986 by Louis Kong and a friend who wanted to expand the options for international cuisine in the Vancouver area and bring something different that would be authentic yet still accessible for the western palate.

The Denman Street location eventually moved to Cambie Street at 14th Avenue but the offerings of fusion southeast Asian food (from Malaysian to Thai to Indonesian cuisine) has remained consistent at all locations over the years. The most popular items are the satay, skewers of grilled chicken, beef, pork or lamb, and the Roti Canai, a thin, savory pan-fried bread that comes with special curry dipping sauce, similar to Indian roti. In summer 2018, diners can look out for Dried Curry Soft Shelled Crab, which are in season in early summer.

While Thai and Malaysian dishes tend to be on the spicy side, not to fear, says Kong: Tropika offers heat options from not-at-all spicy to super-spicy. For those with an aversion to spice, knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer recommendations.

For those trying Malaysian food for the first time, Kong suggests choosing a few Satays to start, then try some of the house specialties: Tropika home-style chicken and the pineapple rice (which actually comes in a pineapple), a Thai-style dish of rice, pan fried with herbs and veggies. It’s the perfect meal for two and an easy introduction to Malaysian and Thai food.

While Tropika offers a fusion of cuisines, it’s also a place where many cultures collide. The restaurant is home to a wide range of clientele and the owners are proud to serve approachable food for people from all different backgrounds.
