So that’s the end of this round, for me.

Last week, my youngest walked across the stage, had the principal flip the little tassel on her cap from one side to the other, and collected her diploma.

High school graduation — it’s no small thing. In fact, it’s the stuff of legend, not to mention some really bad teen movies.

It could be argued that graduating from university or college, or landing a great job, is a bigger accomplishment.

And that may be, but I’d say nothing compares in terms of a rite of passage. As one speaker aptly told McMath secondary’s Class of 2018, “this is your learner’s permit.”

In other words, you’re at the very beginning of your journey into adulthood, and while you may still need some supervision, the fact is you’re in the driver’s seat, now. It’s your hands that are on the wheel and your foot that’s on the pedal. (Yeah, about that lead foot…)

Or, as one of the wisest philosophers of our time said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

There’s a reason why Dr. Seuss’ Oh, The Places You’ll Go! is such a popular graduation gift. As I watched the grads cross the stage, I pondered the places they’ll go. Some are enrolled in university, others in college, still others plan to take a “gap year” to go travelling.

Who knows what really lays ahead for any of them, but it’s a poignant moment in time to see their Grade 8 picture side by side with their grad photo, to note how they’ve changed, how they haven’t (OMG, is that so-and-so? Oh ya, I can still see that dimple) and hear their future plans.

But back to Dr. Seuss, who despite being silly and whimsical is never trite. After all his clever rhymes about all the great places you’ll go, he adds, “Except when you don’t. Because, sometimes, you won’t. I’m sorry to say so but, sadly, it’s true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you.”

At these ceremonies, we hear about who’s the recipient of what awards and who’s been accepted into what post-secondary school. And while I don’t want to deny anyone their due, the fact is all of these kids, even the high flyers, will get caught up on a prickly perch from time to time.

This grad class knows that better than most.

To that end, I respect the principal for taking a minute to honour one girl who wasn’t there — a bright star who died in October.

There is a lot of pressure on kids. I want to say “these days,” but perhaps there has always been pressure. Although, I don’t remember having to tell people I was taking a “gap year” to somehow justify not going to school the following September.

If I could tell the Class of 2018 anything, it would be the same thing I would tell their parents, and frequently tell myself: cut the comparisons and judgement and have faith in your/ their own path, complete with twists and turns, and even some complete u-turns. Above all, be kind to yourself and others.

But, grads, the last word goes to Dr. Seuss: “Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting so get on your way.”

Summer is finally upon us which means it is time to celebrate.

After the opening, the day fills with entertainment all afternoon on two stages.

Attractions include the Japanese cultural show, trade show, horticultural show, artisan gallery, car show, food festival, and children’s festival. Finally, a local favourite pie and ice cream parlour for refreshments.

In 2017, the festival added a popular food truck element that brings together many unique flavours of B.C. in a fun and bustling environment.

But, the main attraction, as always, is the famous salmon barbeque where over 1200 pounds of wild salmon filets are grilled over open fire pits. The popular treat sells out every year and goes for $16 per plate.

No matter who you are or where you come from, the salmon festival holds a special message for all and that is a boisterous pride in history, environment, and culture. If you are new, returning, or just want to get a taste of what Steveston has to offer, come get outside and celebrate this year’s Steveston Salmon Festival!

Re: “Bunny boom,” Feature, June 14.

It has now been several weeks since Richmond City Council shocked most Richmond residents by voting to allow almost 11,000 sq. ft. “homes“ on agricultural land in Richmond. (Plus a potential additional home of over 3,000 sq. ft.) This was deemed to be sound agricultural policy by six of our councillors. The phenomenal impact on the price of farmland for mansion building and speculation was ignored.

I wanted to thank you for the articles on the rabbit population crisis in Richmond.

The problem of dumped domestic rabbits, who in turn become feral over generations, is huge and not restricted to Richmond.

The result? A recent MLS listing now has a 50-yearold 1,300 sq. ft. home on ALR land (11240 No. 2 Rd.) listed for $4,111,111. That will get you 1.5 acres. Like most of the new listings on farmland properties, the farming potential is incidental. This one suggests you can build an “over 10,000 sq. ft. castle with fantastic mountain views in a prestigious neighbourhood.”

I live in Vancouver and recently rescued a dumped domestic rabbit, whose last baby likely died buried alive when the city destroyed the place where she had her nest — under blackberry brambles.

The mother is now safe and in a foster home, where she is getting love from humans and cats alike!

It is difficult to understand, with the agreed on abomination of 23,000 sq. ft. homes currently being built on our farmland, how anybody would not see how deleterious this new policy will continue to be for the future of Richmond farmland.

But this problem will not be resolved by rescuing the odd rabbit here and there. The city of Richmond needs to step up and help the rescues in existence. There are bylaws against dumping animals that are not being enforced.

Only the mayor, and two councillors, tried to keep a rein on farmland mansions. Will there be accountability in the municipal fall election?

There also needs to be a crackdown on underground rabbit breeders, and all purchased rabbits from known and registered breeders should be microchipped, so that if they’re dumped, their “owners” can be found.

This situation is really distressful and not just for the humans whose properties are being damaged by the rabbits. It is mostly distressing for the animals, who were once “pets” and then treated as disposable trash.

Recently, a pet bunny was actually thrown in a garbage bag in the trash bin of (I think) a grocery store.

Thankfully, s/he was rescued. But because many humans are despicable, irresponsible and thoughtless, it is up to the government bodies to do what is right.

Thank you again for bringing this sad issue to the public.

RCMP has to put brakes on speeders Dear Editor, Re: “Put brakes on speeders,” Letters, June 14 I couldn’t agree more with letter writer Peter Boldy more. I have been writing about the rampant speeding on Richmond streets for years. Anyone who drives down Steveston Highway knows that the posted speed limit is like a suggestion rather than the law.

If you do the 50/km/hr limit you are met with the horn, finger or worse — the dreaded road rage. Our local RCMP detachment does not seem to care or have an interest in enforcing the speeding epidemic thus raising our already high insurance rates.

I drive this route daily and have personally seen cars pass marked police cars wth no consequence. Something needs to be done and soon as I have seen enough carnage on our roads.

Court decides who gets the gift Reasons for judgement were released earlier this year for the case Re Terezakis Estate. In this case, the deceased (mother), who died in 2016, was survived by five children. One of those children died before the mother. That child was survived by two children, one of whom then died a year later (and also before the mother died).

The Executor of the Estate applied for the Court’s interpretation of the Will’s residue clause.

Apparently, one of the surviving children felt that the deceased grandchild’s share of the residue should go to the other surviving children.

But the Court, relying on Sections 42 and 46 of the Wills Estates and Succession Act, and on the notes of the Solicitor who drafted the Will, held that the deceased grandchild’s share should go to the other, surviving grandchild.

In my opinion, this case shows how important the notes of the Will drafter (in this case, the Lawyer) can be in the effort to interpret both the Testator’s wishes and the legislation itself, in seeking to determine the wishes of the Testator.

Going, Hop up to help, Sorry for giving you going, city council the finger gone Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, I just want to express my opinion that the City of Richmond is becoming a jungle of condominiums.

As such, small businesses are being displaced. I used to buy buns, breads and have my pants altered in front of a small commercial area in front of Richmond Centre; now it is gone.

The Park Road where I used to buy fresh meat from a meat shop there is also gone. When will this end?

How many more small businesses will be displaced?

The Rona hardware store on Elmbridge will also be gone in a few years from now.

After reading the recent front page article in our Richmond News regarding the ever growing rabbit population and all other problems it entails, I urge our mayor and councillors to take a serious look at this situation and act accordingly and responsibly.

The lives of these vulnerable creatures as well as the properties of Richmond tax payers are at stake and must be protected from harm and/or damages.

These factors must be taken into consideration and acted upon quickly and efficiently.

I am appalled by the lack of interest, support and total disregard from our elected officials regarding this matter.

No one is asking for a hand out. To solve this issue, Richmond needs a rental property to be used as a sanctuary in order to house the abundance of rabbits taking shelter in residential areas. Once a suitable property is allocated, this issue will be handled humanly, diligently and responsibly by rescue operators, volunteers, through fundraising and private donations from concerned and compassionate citizens.

Dear Editor,

I would like to address an incident that happened on the corner of Granville Avenue and Gilbert Road at possibly 12:30pm, Friday, June 8.

Kid neighbours’ cookie gift warms the heart and mind Dear Editor, Re: “Students connect to neighbours,” Edcom, June 14.

I was crossing Gilbert against the traffic partly, because the crosswalk signal was out due to construction, which confused me, then angered me. A car, with the right of way, began turning left towards me and stopped. I stopped, turned and lashed out with an angry look and a middle finger.

He was doing no wrong, I was, no matter the circumstance.

I, too, am a longtime resident in the Thompson school area and was also a lucky recipient of a knock at my door by two young men and their mothers delivering cookies with a lovely card stating they liked being my neighbour (very serendipitous, since my two sons attended Thompson school, graduating 16 and 20 years ago).

At the time, my anxiety level was red lining. I’ve been experiencing a lot of stress lately; but there is always a choice when one acts, sometimes though we have precious little control of our senses.

Strata to face tribunal Wong opposes Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

A high-profile case of alleged racial discrimination in Richmond is set to be heard by the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal this October.

“The outcome affects the future of English as an official language, and our Canadian cultural identity,” complainant Andreas Kargut, now a former Richmond resident, told the Richmond News.

Kargut and up to nine other households allege Mandarin-speaking strata council members at Wellington Court discriminated against non-Mandarin speakers by holding meetings, including its July 2015 Annual General Meeting, in Mandarin only.

After a number of meetings were conducted in Mandarin and no resolution came from discourse between the two sides, Kargut filed a tribunal complaint in December 2015.

This month, tribunal member Devyn Cousineau sought to clarify Kargut’s claim by technically classifying the

claimants as a group of people rather as a class of people. As such, Kargut must list the parties — some of whom have moved, including Kargut — by June 30 for the tribunal to proceed.

Cousineau said Kargut’s allegation falls under the category of discrimination on the basis of race, ancestry, and place of origin, in violation of section 8 of the Human Rights Code.

Since then the strata council and Kargut’s group have been in a stalemate.

Kargut claims that in the 2016 AGM, a motion to continue using a certified and independent translator in all meetings going forward was defeated.

Kargut is fundraising money to pay for the costly legal expenses.

“We are still looking for someone who would be interested in helping us fund this,” said Kargut, citing legal cost estimates of $50,000.

“This ordeal has ruined a once great neighbourhood.

This issue also destroyed our ability to live together respectfully in a multicultural environment. We want to be living in a place where neighbours respect each other’s culture and language and not discriminate by major-

ity,” notes Kargut on GoFundMe.com.

“We believe that, as Canadians, it is important for Canada’s official languages to be used as the principle part of communication no matter the case of a strata corporation or a global Canadian company.”

The case is unique in so much that ethnic Chinese people are a visible minority in Canada but a majority in Richmond (52 per cent). And, 11.2 per cent of Richmond residents cannot communicate in English at all — by far the highest rate in Canada.

The case was approved for a hearing last December by tribunal member Walter Rilkoff: “Where it occurs, discrimination by the minority against members of the majority group is no more acceptable just because that group has obtained a majority in a particular enclave.”

The strata told the tribunal that it needed to speak Mandarin only because its members were all Mandarin-speaking and some didn’t speak English.

Wrote Rilkoff: “Wellington Court is not, and cannot be, a closed community, open only to people of one ethnic group...”

Richmond Centre MP Alice Wong has again weighed in on the public debate surrounding Canadian values.

On Friday, Wong issued a statement opposing a landmark decision (7-2) by the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) that upholds the right of law societies to deny accreditation to a proposed law school at the evangelical Christian Trinity Western University, which opened a new, satellite campus in Richmond in 2015.

“Canada is being made less inclusive, less tolerant and ultimately less free as a result of this recent Supreme Court decision,” said Wong.

The case pitted two societal values — freedom of religion and promotion of equality — against one another.

TWU requires students sign a covenant allowing sexual intimacy only between a man and a woman who are married. As such, the Law Society of B.C. previously voted (28-21) to deny accreditation of the proposed TWU law school, because the covenant amounts to discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people.

Wong, herself an evangelical Christian, said that denial broke the Charter of Rights. However, the judges ruled that denying accreditation was a reasonable limit on the university’s rights in order to balance the public-interest objectives of the law societies. “It is inimical to the integrity of the legal profession to limit access on the basis of personal characteristics,” the judges wrote.

Richmond is infamous across B.C. for its bizarre driving incidents, some more serious than others.

Last Tuesday, June 12, was no different when a white, luxury SUV, for no appar-

ent reason, sideswiped from the left-turn lane a black SUV at the intersection of Alderbridge Way and No. 3 Road.

The collision caused the white vehicle, reportedly driven by an elderly woman, to momentarily ride along on two wheels, before slumping back onto terra firma.

No one appeared to be injured in the incident, which simply added to Richmond’s driving infamy.

Crown files driver acquittal appeal scene from multiple blunt force traumas.

Crown Counsel has decided to appeal the acquittal of a Richmond driver who caused a fatal crash — a few days after a petition was launched by the victim’s daughter.

The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS), on behalf of the Crown, announced it is appealing the acquittal of Ken Chung, who was charged with causing the death of Dr. Alphonsus Hui by dangerous driving in 2015.

Last week, Dr. Hui’s daughter, Monique Hui, launched a petition to lobby Attorney General David Eby over the acquittal of Chung.

By Thursday at 4:30 p.m., the petition had attracted 53,409 signatures.

In November 2015, Hui, a trusted family doctor with more than 40 years of service, was on his way to his office when his car was T-boned at the intersection of Oak Street and 41st Avenue in Vancouver.

The Audi driven by Chung was travelling at 140 km/h in a 50 km/h zone and the speed, at impact, was 119 km/h.

Dr. Hui’s family is outraged by the verdict and demanded justice for him.

On Thursday, the BCPS revealed in a statement that it’s “seeking a ruling…that the acquittal be set aside,” and suggested, among other remedies, that a “a new trial ordered.”

The BCPS added that it feels there may have been “errors of law.”

Monique Hui said in her petition that her family were “concerned the government and our courts are not doing enough to keep drivers who speed excessively off our streets.

“The petition demands that Chung’s license be taken away and that the government introduce more stringent policies that will rightfully penalize reckless driving.”

Chung was also caught street racing in a residential zone last year and plead guilty to excessive speeding.

“It is clear to us that (Chung) is still unrepentant for what he has done,” added Monique Hui.

Greenhouses curbed, secondary homes ok’d Alyse Kotyk RICHMOND NEWS

A public hearing Monday saw the final approval of secondary homes on agricultural land, as well as new regulations for concrete structures on agricultural properties.

First, councillors Derek Dang, Linda McPhail, Bill McNulty, Chak Au, Ken Johnston and Alexa Loo, voted 6-3 in favour of allowing a second home on Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) properties more than 20 acres.

There are 85 such lots in the city. Said lots will now be allowed a 10,764 square-foot house and a 3,229 squarefoot house for farmworkers.

The city is to ensure that any secondary house is to be used by farmworkers only.

An agrologist must sign off on the need for such a home at the building permit process.

Council then turned its attention to regulating concrete greenhouses.

With cannabis legalization coming soon, City of Richmond staff had raised concerns about a regulatory void leading to a flood of concrete cannabis greenhouses being built on the Agricultural Land Reserve, thus destroying prime soil.

However, some Richmond farmland owners voiced concern that blanket restrictions would limit overall production.

“There is a long history of farming in this country, and we often cling to romanticized notions of simplicity, struggle, and sacrifice. In today’s modern world, this idealized image of farming is no longer true, nor is it feasible,” wrote Richmond Farmland Owners Association in a letter to council prior to the public hearing.

But council moved forward with staff-recommended

regulations for agricultural buildings and greenhouses, which now prohibit concrete floors over 8,000 square feet, regardless of what crop is grown.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie said an owner may apply for a variance to build over 8,000 square feet.

Coun. Alexa Loo voted against the new regulations, citing loopholes. For instance, a greenhouse applicant could claim to grow vegetables via a statuatory declaration but that declaration would be void once the property is sold (potentially to a pot producer). Brodie said terms of variances are to be determined.

John Roston, Richmond FarmWatch member, acknowledged the complexity of the issue.

“There are farmers who legitimately need to build some kind of farm building with a concrete floor, like for dairy cattle,” Roston said.

Vancouver Coastal Health officials are calling for provincial and municipal regulations and standards for trampoline parks following a fatality at Richmond’s Extreme Air Park and a rising numbers of trampolinerelated injuries reported at local hospitals.

On top of that, he writes horticulture columns and in 2017 he started hosting workshops at the Vancouver Horticulture Club. He’s also a family man, ensuring he always makes time for his loved ones. How does he fit it all in? Well, Shang is not much of a sleeper. “I usually sleep five hours a day so I drink copious amounts of coffee,” he confesses while brewing himself a cuppa.

Those who have visited Shang’s home have surely noticed the myriad of frameenclosed diplomas and awards steadily adorning his living room walls, symbols of the entrepreneur’s overachieving character.

Shang’s friends have often asked him, “Is it necessary for a gardener to invest this much time and money into getting certified?” But their skepticism has never swayed him.

“I have maintained the habit of taking one course a year, three if time permits,” he says. Shang has been rewarded for his hard work and dedication on many occasions.

Notably, he was a finalist in RBC’s Top-25 Canadian Immigrant Awards and most recently, he won the 2017 BCLNA Garden Communicator of the Year Award.

Presently, there are no such laws in B.C. nor Canada, said Daly, via a letter to TSBC. “Unfortunately, trampoline parks in B.C. and Canada fall into a regulatory vacuum,” said Daly, noting Britain and Australia have regulations.

Daly said a VCH analysis of injuries shows trampoline park injuries, compared to those from backyard trampolines, are more severe.

In February, Dr. Nancy Austin, department head for emergency medicine at Richmond Hospital, told the Richmond News that in the past five years she’s seen a “dramatic” increase in trampoline-related injuries.

Austin concurred with the Canadian Pedi-

atric Society and Health Canada, both of which oppose the use of trampolines by anyone under age seven.

Such injuries have received little public attention in Canada until a recently-publicized civil lawsuit in Alberta and the death of 46-year-old Jay Greenwood at Extreme Air Park on Jan. 20.

Greenwood broke his neck jumping into the foam pit and subsequently died. His death prompted serious questions among eyewitnesses about safety at the facility, including a lack of staff trained in first-aid for spinal cord injuries.

Greenwood, a Victoria-based contractor, was an organ donor and father of two.

Extreme Air Park has stated it welcomes regulatory changes.

Land registry a first The B.C. government says it is taking steps to end hidden ownership of real estate, thus making it more difficult to evade real estaterelated taxes.

The Province announced Wednesday it is establishing a new, publicly accessible registry of who owns real estate in British Columbia.

“British Columbia has developed a reputation as an attractive place to anonymously invest and hide wealth. Right now in B.C., real estate investors can hide behind numbered companies, offshore and domestic trusts, and corporations,” said Carole James, Minister of Finance, in a news release.

“Ending this type of hidden ownership in real estate will help us fight tax evasion, tax fraud and money laundering. Our goal is to

return fairness to the housing market.”

Noted the news release: The registry will be the first of its kind in Canada, and will improve transparency in the real estate market. It will provide tax auditors and law enforcement agencies, as well as federal and provincial regulators, with information that will assist with their investigations.

The proposed legislation is set out in a white paper that includes the draft land owner transparency act. The new law would authorize the collection of beneficial ownership information, as well as the creation and administration of the public registry.

James is also introducing a new law to track pre-sale condominium contract assignments, also to prevent tax evasion.

Activists protest SOGI at school board create safety and acceptance for LGBTQ+ students and show examples of acceptable behaviour.

“It is important to ensure that there are teaching and learning resources for parents, students and staff so that we can create understanding and foster an inclusive climate where LGBTQ+ students feel that they truly belong, and can focus on their learning. “

Around 20 people gathered before a school board meeting last week to protest a proposed sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) policy.

The protest was organized by Vancouverbased advocacy group Culture Guard and advocate Laura-Lynn Thompson. Both parties have been actively protesting against SOGI policies province-wide.

Nixon said the Richmond Board of Education, the SOGI Policy Working Group and the SD38 Policy Committee carefully considered all of the input provided by its stakeholders and the public to the proposed SOGI policy.

The protesters held signs that read “don’t mess with our children” and “parents have rights” on the side of the road near the Richmond School Board and waved signs at cars passing by.

“As feedback was submitted, it was reviewed over the course of the consultation period and was used to inform the revisions that were made to the original draft policy,” she said.

“I think the school board should focus on education, not start ideology wars,” said Jolie Trost, a Richmond mom of two.

Some parents said they don’t oppose the policy, but are hoping instead to have it amended. However, they feel that their voice has been ignored.

“The school board received more than 900 pieces of feedback by June 4 and their adjustments to the draft came out on June 8. Did they have time to review all the feedback before the revisions? I doubt it,” said

However, the Richmond School Board said it has carefully reviewed all the input on the SOGI policy and clarifies that the policy is not about “ideology.”

“In the fall of 2016, the Ministry [of Edu-

cation] directed school districts to update their District Codes of Conduct to include the addition of wording about gender identity and gender expression,” Trustee Sandra Nixon told the Richmond News.

“A separate SOGI policy is not about ideology but instead will highlight and

Richmond residents who would like to provide a comment on the SOGI policy will have up to two minutes to do so. A sign-up list for speakers will be posted online and will become available at 4:30 p.m. on June 25, according to Nixon.

Montessori sunk by cash deal Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

Early childhood educator Debbie Marette says she is heartbroken her 21-year Montessori pre-school program is being evicted this month with nowhere to go, as yet.

Marette says her childcare facility is not the first to face the wrath of Metro Vancouver’s real estate prices and it certainly will not be the last. She is concerned quality early childhood education is at stake in the region.

Serving roughly 30-40 students at any given time, Blue Spruce Montessori, on Bird Road in the East Cambie neighbourhood, has operated out of a small hall belonging to St. Edwards Anglican Church since 1997. But, said Marette, when the property was sold for well over the asking price last October to an offshore buyer intending to build an international school, the program was given just eight months to find a new space.

“I feel I’ve knocked on every door. There’s just nothing. So we’re stuck not being able to go anywhere,” said Marette, who has reached out to city councillors, MLAs and Premier John Horgan to explain her situation.

“These families have been with us for years

and years and years,” she said.

Montessori programming focuses on individual self-development in a mixed-age environment from age 30 months to six years.

Students are encouraged to initiate learning rather than be instructed or “herded,” according to Marette.

Many childcare programs, Montessori or otherwise, operate out of churches and other spaces that are ripe for development, said Marette.

She said the provincial government’s plan to subsidize childcare facilities is a good one but overlooks the need to keep existing facilities with low lease rates.

“Good rent allowed me to offer this childcare at a very reasonable rate,” noted Marette.

Parent of three Blue Spruce graduates Becky Chan said she too was heartbroken to hear of the school’s demise.

“Debbie’s devotion to not only the school, but the community, is what makes her a truly remarkable educator and integral part to the heart of Richmond,” said Chan, via email.

the existing push to increase childcare spaces and lower costs, while noble, has buried the most important part about early childhood development — to ensure children are in a safe and healthy environment.

There was a potential opportunity to move into an accessory building on the Agricultural Land Reserve in east Richmond but municipal zoning and parking regulations negated the idea.

“There are all these hoops to jump through …unless you have millions of dollars to scoop

up a warehouse and do repairs,” she said.

The veteran educator was disappointed the church didn’t accept an identical offer from a group of parents to buy the land, however the offer wasn’t cash and without subjects.

The church has, however, offered Marette the building (modular) but she has nowhere to move it to.

“I’m got giving up hope. I’m hoping to reach out to the community and local politicians and say, ‘look, I have an opportunity to keep this amazing building,’” said Marette.

Chef/food educator takes lead Graeme Wood RICHMOND NEWS

Chef, food educator and Richmond resident Ian Lai is the newest executive director of the Richmond Food Security Society.

Lai took the helm last week at the non-profit group planted at Paulik Park in central Richmond. He replaces Anita Georgy, who is joining FarmFolk CityFolk.

“My goal is to continue with the mission of the Food Security Society and bring more interest form the community to understand food systems through education,” Lai told the Richmond News.

Lai said he wants to strengthen existing programs, such as the seed library, Youth Get Rooted program and the Kids in the Garden events.

The society also oversees 320 community garden plots

at nine locations around Richmond. Lai said the society is planning to build 240 new garden plots in next two to three years. Nineteen new plots at Railway Avenue and Moncton Street were already built last month.

A long-time community gardener, Lai was vocal in 2014 about theft from gardens and conducted an education campaign to curb vegetable thieves.

The society also collects food for low-income residents and the Richmond Food Bank. In 2016 it claims to have collected 5,014 pounds of fruit from urban trees and bushes.

Lai describes food security as “when all members of the community have access to nutritious, safe and personally acceptable and culturally appropriate foods produced in ways that are environmentally sound and socially just.”

security. As such, the society vigorously promotes local agriculture.

“The mission is true to what I believe in. We have a robust food system in Richmond; it’s important to have access to food. And I’m huge on education,” said Lai. The society also takes an advocacy role, something Lai said he will eventually take on.

Last month, one of Georgy’s last public messages was to speak out against Richmond city council’s desire to allow large homes (plus a smaller secondary house) on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Georgy said the decision went against the Richmond Food Charter, which was signed by the very councillors who allowed estate houses to continue on the ALR.

Quota system under review Offshore ‘slipper skippers’ and local monopolies are drowning coastal communities: MP Hardie

If you have ever purchased fish at Fisherman’s Wharf, there’s a 50/50 chance the bulk of your money will make its way into the pockets of an investor, who may not even be able to pinpoint Steveston on a map.

Such investors, both foreign and domestic, own government-issued quotas and licenses and lease them to fishers for a cut of the catch.

Because profit margins for fishers are already razer thin, the extra costs of the quotas and licenses means young, new and independent fishers can’t get a foothold in the industry.

This regulatory system is being called into question by Fleetwood Port Kells Liberal MP Ken Hardie.

“Really, what we’ve developed on the West Coast is like a cartel,” said Hardie, who, as of this month, has convinced the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans to begin examining, by February 2019, West Coast fisheries regulations and their social and eco-

In B.C., about half of all fisheries (rockfish, halibut, herring, urchins etc.) have quotas that were initially issued by Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to fishers — much of them issued three to four decades ago. Over time, companies, such as Canfisco, and investors, both domestic and foreign, have accumulated quotas and licences from retiring fishers.

Hardie said the system hasn’t necessarily impacted consumer prices. Rather the profits are simply ending up in the hands of “slipper skippers” who own and lease quotas from office towers. Hardie said he is aware of concerns that American and Chinese entities are gobbling up Canada’s fish licences and quotas, however determining who owns what is not of public record.

“If we’re looking at licenses being sold offshore then the value to B.C. is very low,” said Hardie.

Canadian company Canfisco, which has nearly monopolized salmon and herring licenses (with quotas attached to them), did not respond to the Richmond News.

At first, quotas were seen as a way to prevent a freefor-all fishery. And each licence and quota has government fees attached to it, with money going to DFO for conservation and enforcement.

Budden said advantages of quotas include easier management of fish stocks by DFO and allowing fishermen to work on their own time, instead of the free-for-all derby fishing we see with salmon openings.

Fishers have long complained about the ownership structure of licences and individual transferable quotas (ITQs), or catch shares, according to former veteran Steveston fisher Glenn Budden.

Another advantage, said Budden, was that accumulating quotas allowed boats to stay out on the sea longer and thus operate more economically. But the quotas are being monopolized according to industry experts and are now considered by fishers as more valuable than actually fishing.

“You can buy quota and not be involved in the fishing industry at all, like the stock market. Basically you can just buy stock in the fishing industry, being quota, and lease it out to fishermen, and let them take all the risk,”

If a fisher doesn’t have catch quotas, they must purchase or lease them in order to catch fish. But the rates being charged are increasing and leading to fishers exiting the business — and their communities.

“It all comes out of the brailer,” explained Budden.

requirements to sell the fish back to them at prices set by the company itself.

“In other words, it all comes out of the catch; so you pay for your fuel, your groceries and all your expenses and your maintenance, your crew and yourself. And now, recently, in the past few decades, you’re also paying, quite possibly, a lease rate — for the licence itself, or the quota to go with the license, or possibly both — to actually go fishing. So it takes away from the income of the operation,” he noted.

According to the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters, older B.C. fishers are not being replaced. In 2001, fishers age 30-44 accounted for 34 per cent of the labour pool. Now they account for 21 per cent. And in B.C., fishing income has declined compared to Atlantic Canada where there are no quotas. A B.C. fisher earned, on average, $19,100 in 2015 whereas the Canadian average was $28,615.

Budden is now a senior fishing vessel investigator with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada based in Richmond. He said fishers are having to cut corners on safety and crew size and quality, to make ends meet.

“Catch shares (quotas) claim to improve fishermen’s finances by allowing them to take advantage of good timing, getting higher prices when they land fish in periods of high consumer demand. But any advantages are cancelled out by the stress of high lease prices, ever-thinning margins, and loss of agency around establishing relationships with buyers,” noted the council.

“I’ve seen guys lease quota and you literally give your head a shake and ask, how are you even making money?” said Budden, who fished out of Steveston for 35 years.

According to a 2015 report by charities Ecotrust Canada and the Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation, there has been a precipitous decline in fishers in B.C. while quota prices skyrocket. For instance, the cost of one pound of halibut quota in 1988 was $5.18 while in 2014 it was $71.59. This year, Pacific Boat Broker has ads selling halibut quota for $125 per pound.

“It’s become like a mortgage,” said Budden.

Since discovering a love of the stage in Richmond’s Gateway Theatre a decade ago, Boris Bilic is now making his name in the land of Hollywood.

The Steveston-London secondary alumni moved to Los Angeles from Richmond more than three years ago and last year graduated from the two-year conservatory program at L.A.’s American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

“Anyone who moves to a new city could tell you it’s tough,” Bilic, 21, said of his transition from his Richmond home to the City of Angels.

“But eventually you will find a rhythm.”

Upon completing his program, Bilic landed lead roles in two feature-length films; one, Survival Box, which will be contending for the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, and the other, Afterthought, which will premiere on Amazon Prime later this year.

He has also worked on numerous short films, many of which were nominated for awards at film festivals in and around L.A. “I’ve never had that ‘lull’ that many actors talk about,” said Bilic.

“If I’m ever waiting for a job, it’s usually my fault because even if I’m working on one production, I’m always looking for the next thing to do.”

He’s also recently finished production of a short film, No Surprises, that he wrote, produced and directed and which he hopes will be featured in festivals in L.A. and Vancouver.

“As an actor, you don’t get a lot of creative control,” said Bilic.

“That’s why I wanted to give directing a try and I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

Although he’s currently more focused on his film career, Bilic says “theatre will always be

Bilic began his theatre training at the Gateway Theatre Academy in Richmond and participated in the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare festival.

He explained that his parents were the ones who encouraged him to make the leap and pursue an acting career in L.A., but he still visits Richmond during the holidays.

As for his next steps, Bilic said that he’s “focused on one thing at a time by showing up, doing a good job and hoping that the production turns out great.”

Asked if he has any advice for aspiring young actors, Bilic turned to his favourite Jim Carrey quote, saying: “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

Not enough people, added Bilic, “realize that in doing what you love, there’s always a chance for success. If you’re willing to work hard enough, you will be fine.

“It’s important to surround yourself with people who believe in you. Know who your friends are and take risks.”

People of all ages are being invited to paint pianos on the streets of Richmond in preparation for this year’s Pianos on the Streets Program. Led by local artists, PianoPalooza in the Plaza will take place on Saturday, June 23 and will launch the fourth year of the popular program.

RICHMOND APPRECIATION DAY

Painting will take place from noon to 4 p.m. in the Richmond Cultural Centre Plaza.

Five pianos will be artfully designed and painted and then located in Richmond Nature Park, Britannia Shipyards, Terra Nova Community Gardens, the Richmond Cultural Centre and King George Park.

The pianos will then be free for people to simply walk up and play, any time they want from July through September.

Richmond artist Catherine Adamson, as well as artists from the Richmond Youth Media Lab and Richmond Society for Community Living, will lead the hands-on painting event, allowing participants to leave their personal touch on a piano.

EVERY THURSDAY!

The public is invited to paint and play street pianos.

All ages and artistic abilities are welcome to participate in this free drop-in event.

‘Housing shouldn’t be that difficult’ Richmond Art Gallery exhibit explores ‘tiny house’ options Made Home” introduces a number of creative housing projects across North America initiated by individuals or social groups, including tiny homes, tree houses, homes on wheels and floating houses.

“If buying a house or an apartment is too expensive today, why not build a tiny home on our own that people can afford?” asks visual artist Germaine Koh in her newest exhibition “Home Made Home.”

Among them are two “tiny house villages” in Oregon, U.S. One was built by 60 homeless people in 2000 on land near the airport of Portland, called Dignity Village; one called Emerald Village Eugene has 22 mini houses provided by a local group for people with low income.

The exhibit, on display at Richmond Art Gallery from now until Aug. 26, explores tiny houses as a solution to the intense housing affordability problem.

Nevertheless, many tiny houses still exist in a grey area, according to Koh.

The display includes a 170 sq. ft. wood frame house on wheels, which was constructed from scratch by Koh, a Malaysia-born artist who has created visual art in Vancouver for 30 years.

She hopes her project will set an example and “make the idea of having different options for housing a little bit friendlier for people who are hesitant.

“The [housing] issues have been present in my work for a long, long time,” said Koh.

The house on display has a living area and a sofa that can be pulled out to be a bed at night. Behind the bedroom is a full-size kitchen with some storage space and a mini bathroom with a shower and toilet. The house is also equipped with an electrical connector, a water tank and a compost system.

Koh named the home “Lulu Living” — after Lulu Island – to acknowledge “the long history in houses in transit in Richmond and surrounding areas,” such as houses made from shipping containers or floating houses.

“I’m really trying to look for support and advocate for different kinds of housing options that address different needs — not everyone wants or can afford a 3,000 sq. ft. house,” she said.

Koh has also designed and built a 100 sq. ft., two-storey, permanent micro studio prototype on the Southern Gulf Islands. “[In some areas,] the houses are small enough that you don’t require a building

But in cities such as Richmond, all houses, including tiny ones, require a building permit. People will need to submit a rezoning application to have another house located in their backyards, according to the City of Richmond.

Koh acknowledges that building codes exist for a reason, such as for safety and to set certain standards on how things are built.

“But we are in such a crisis that I think we would do well to think about whether the regulations could be expanded to, for example, allow for tiny houses built on wheels in backyards,” said Koh. “As long as it’s well enough built to a certain standard, all of a sudden you’ve got potentially additional housing in the backyard; it increases your density.”

“Home Made Home” also showcases a wooden shed Koh built “with zero budget” — it was made out of scraps of wood left

over from other projects.

“Literally, if you were to take the stuff that’s wasted from building a standardized house, you could probably build a little house on wheels,” said Koh.

The exhibition is free to the public daily at Richmond Art Gallery. The house “Lulu Living” is on display on the green land outside and open to visitors on Tuesdays from 1-3 p.m. or by appointment.

“In many ways, small houses are more sustainable than regular ones.

“And people receive great satisfaction that comes from building our own houses.

To me, it’s a tradition that’s been lost to most of us these days,” she added.

Besides Koh, more and more people have started exploring alternative options for housing.

“And I just finally decided, I’m in as good a position as anybody to actually go out and build some examples of what could be reasonable, small, very well designed buildings that could maybe address some of these social issues of access to adequate housing.”

“I’m hoping that people will walk away with an idea that they could have more of a say in what their houses will be like, or they will get some inspirations for things they could build and live in,” said Koh.

More than 700 trees and 50,000 shrubs, all native to the area, have been planted along the perimeter trail.

Walking away, meditation, exercise and reducing the workload can help alleviate stress.

Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 per cent), money (62 percent) and work (61 per cent).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects.

Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep.

But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indi-

cated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain.

The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday.

Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days, can help people combat stress for several hours afterward.

Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

Time at Children’s Hospital and the single biggest challenge she told me was people getting access to healthcare.

Lucy Reynolds knows all about wait times in the B.C. healthcare system, having waited 10 months for surgery to recover her hearing while in Kindergarten.

Now a 10-year-old in Grade 5, Lucy took it upon herself, as part of a school project, to lobby the B.C. Minister of Health, Adrian Dix about wait times in the province.

The articulate and forthright Lucy wrote to Dix in detail, explaining how he needs to prioritize getting people a family doctor and tackle waiting lists for patients to see specialists desperate for tests such as CT scans.

She has yet to receive a reply from Dix, but that hasn’t stopped the Steveston area girl from soldiering on with her project in her Stratford Hall class in Vancouver.

“I thought (writing) was the best way to get it started,” Lucy told the Richmond News, moments before her school presentation.

“I chose health for the project for two reasons: I’ve had personal experience, I had to wait a long time for surgery.

“And two, I interviewed a doctor by Face-

“If it weren’t for the project, I’d still do this as I want to see change. I know there is no clear way to solve the issue, but I know we need more medical professionals out there, so we need more medical students to start with. The more doctors we have, the more patients can receive proper care.”

Lucy recalled how, in 2013, she all of a sudden started screaming with pain, closely followed by the hearing loss.

“I could hear very little; I couldn’t hear my teacher,” she said. “I had no friends because I couldn’t hear them. I played a lot by myself at that time I kind of got used to it.”

She eventually had three surgeries, in total, over two and a half years to deal with OME (otitis media with effusion).

Lucy had tubes put in her ears to help drain the fluid and help improve her hearing.

She also had her tonsils removed and a frenotomy to release the tissue that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth, all of which resulted in her requiring speech therapy.

“Hearing is a privilege now and my friend and I write songs all the time,” added Lucy.

Thursday, June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day and Richmond will host several events over that weekend in celebration.

On Saturday, June 23, head to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery for festivities put on in partnership with Connections Community Services Pathways Aboriginal Centre. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the outdoor celebration will highlight local Indigenous artists, music, dancing, crafts, resource and activity tables and a bannock bake-off.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. at the main stage, with several performers to follow. The bannock bake-off will begin at 2 p.m. in the pavilion.

Additionally, a free public art bus

tour will take place from 12:30 until 2 p.m., beginning at the Cannery by the Steveston’s Legacy sculpture.

Tarah Hogue, Indigenous curatorial fellow at the Vancouver Art Gallery and Shaun Dacey, director of the Richmond Art Gallery will guide the bus tour to visit public artworks by contemporary Indigenous artists across the city. The 19-year-old from Richmond will be entering his first full season in the B.C. Hockey League come September with the Nanaimo Clippers.

He signed with the club back in January soon after his former spring hockey coach Darren Naylor took over the GM and head coaching duties. Bourne went on to post 19 points in 22 games, including 10 goals, and will be one of the Clippers key players for the coming 2018-19 campaign.

After coming through Seafair Minor Hockey’s rep program he decided to head to the Interior league where one of his best friend’s older brother happened to play. Bourne earned a roster spot with the Chase Heat and made an instant impression.

He admitted there was some thought of sticking to only on ice workouts over the off-season but his passion for lacrosse won over.

“It’s really cool to be able to play two sports at a high level,” said Bourne who is top five in league scoring with 44 points in 13 games.

“Basically growing up (for the last 14 years) I have always played hockey and lacrosse. There was a little bit of thinking of maybe sticking to hockey training but all my friends are playing and I just love it.

“It definitely helps with the eye/ hand coordination and the cardio too. It keeps me in shape over the off-season.”

The Roadrunners are on a roll of late with four wins in their last five games as they look to solidify a playoff spot. Bourne says he will remain with the team right through to the end of the season sometime in July before turning his full-time attention back to hockey in preparation for training camp.

“It’s a big jump. Just a way better league,” added Bourne of his transition to the BCHL. “Just speed of the game and everyone is thinking just that much quicker. But it was super fun and Darren really like to play that up-tempo game where you are always chasing the puck.”

The Roadrunners completed a two game road sweep in a 72-hour

stretch last week with a dominating 10-4 win over the Delta Islanders (4-7-0) on Wednesday night in Ladner to improve to 5-8-0. They are now sitting in a post-season position with six games remaining and still can finish as high as third.

The key through the early season struggles was just how competitive Richmond was in almost every outing. Three of those losses were by just a single goal.

“Those were good signs. We implemented a system that has worked before and we tweaked a bit of things on defence to make the guys feel even more comfortable,” said Roadrunners head coach Neil Doddridge.

U15 Flickers win B.C. title Fencer wins silver at Richmond Field Hockey team goes unbeaten at tourney in Chilliwack The Richmond Flickers have wrapped up their season in golden fashion, capturing B.C. Field Hockey’s U15 Tier 2 Club Championship on the weekend in Chilliwack.

Richmond fencer Shaul Gordon has achieved his best-ever result at the senior international level, winning silver in men’s saber at the Pan American Championships in Havana, Cuba.

The 23-year-old had a day to remember, earning six wins and no losses in poules (preliminaries for the 54 competitors), advancing him directly to the round of 32 where he defeated Brazil’s Enrico Pezzil 15-6. He then won his next two bouts a close 1513, first against Sebastien Cuellar from Colombia, and then against Ricardo Alvarez from Chile in the quarter-finals.

The Flickers earned a final four berth by going 2-0-1 in their pool group on Saturday, highlighted by an impressive 6-1 victory over the host Pink Panthers. The girls also defeated Burnaby and battled the Vancouver Hawks to a 1-1 draw.

In the semi-finals, Richmond slipped past the Tri-City Chaos 1-0, setting the stage for a rematch with Vancouver for provincial gold. The Flickers prevailed 2-0 in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Frost and assistant coach Mike Carkner figured their girls would be in for some tough learning lessons.

The team surprised them.

“Our girls are a little bit relentless and they don’t back down from anyone,” Frost added.

“They just dig in and compete. They know how to play.”

Back in February, Radocaj helped RYBL’s U13 Renegades capture Basketball B.C.’s Metro League championship, scoring the winning basket in the final.

Lai’s hard work and attitude earns him SOBC Spirit Award

A hardworking and conscientious athlete, Special Olympics BC – Richmond’s Matthew Lai always tries his best and cheers on his teammates. He is a strong role model and the deserving winner of SOBC’s 2018 Spirit of Sport Award.

Lai constantly impresses SOBC – Richmond coaches and volunteers with his love of sport and commitment to training. A Special Olympics BC athlete of more than 17 years, Lai has participated in many sports, including 5-pin bowling, athletics, Club Fit, and figure skating. In all his sports, he works hard to perform at a high level and set personal bests, but takes setbacks with a smile and is always a good sport.

A friendly and compassionate person, Lai makes an effort to ensure others feel welcome.

He is always consistently one of the first people to offer to help out at SOBC – Richmond events.

“Matthew is always seen cheering someone on with a huge smile on his face. He talks to everyone and compliments them on a job well done.

Matthew will partner up with anyone and ensure they have a great time in whatever sport or event he is at,” his nominators wrote.

Margaret was an accomplished pianist, sharing her love of music by playing often for church services, residents at care homes, as well as family gatherings.

She was also a talented knitter and presented many beautiful sweaters, toques and blankets as gifts. She loved knitting for those in need. She had a passion for baking, cooking and taking care of her family.

CLEANTECH’S PASSION FOR LOCAL HEALTH CARE: PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST

hen you first walk into the head office of successful cleaning company, Cleantech Service Group, you’re struck with an immediate sense of inspiration and encouragement.

Richmond-based Cleantech specializes in exterior and interior janitorial services for commercial and residential properties but has the splashes of colour and energy perhaps more expected of high tech start-ups in slick urban centres. The entire office features motivational, spirited concepts written on its walls, all focused on keeping every team member informed, involved and celebrated. “Quite simply, we are a company that puts people first, not machines,” explains Iain Hunt, CEO, Cleantech. “We have 26 employees as part of our administrative vision and 260 in the field working hands-on. The people, their quality of work and commitment to being amazing are what make us tick. If people aren’t inspired, they aren’t happy and healthy.”

Cleantech’s commitment to giving back to Richmond Hospital is clearly an extension of that same mindset. Cleantech has sponsored the Annual Richmond Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament for four years. Last year, Hunt felt it was time for a larger role and now lends his exemplary leadership to the Golf Event Committee. Earlier this month,

the tournament raised $318,000 (net), a record since its inception eight years ago.

“The more time I have spent with Richmond Hospital staff, the Foundation and its partners over the years, the more time I want to spend giving back to the hospital,” says Hunt. “The doctors are so committed not only to health care overall but genuinely, to the people.

We are cut from the same cloth that way. It’s a natural fit.”

Cleantech was launched in 1996 by two entrepreneurial brothers.

After a decade building their company, the high level thinkers began a search for someone who could focus on the details. In 2005, Hunt joined Cleantech as CEO. Cleantech’s growth became more rapid as did the number of clients based in Richmond. So, when it came time to choose the location for a new headquarters, Richmond was a no-brainer for Hunt. “Knowing so many of our employees would be close to such quality health care absolutely helped swing the decision. Richmond Hospital is here for residents of all ages, but it’s also here for employees of businesses here, including my own.” Hunt adds, “While I haven’t been a patient, I’m reassured by the calibre of professionals I’ve had the chance to meet that I’m in excellent hands if I ever do need care.”
