There was a big fire in Richmond last weekend, you may have noticed?

If you didn’t, you were likely one of the imbeciles so wrapped up in your own world that you tried to walk into an active wildfire zone on the DND lands, bound by Westminster Highway, Shell and No. 4 roads and Alderbridge Way.

The 12-hectare blaze — which billowed thick smoke across the entire region for almost four days — was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, in living memory in the city.

It’s therefore quite incredible that the aforementioned intrepid individuals failed to spot the scores of firefighters, dozens of fire trucks and, oh, maybe the BC Wildfire Service’s helicopters and planes dousing the flames from the air.

I had to take a second and third look at the City of Richmond’s emergency alert updates on Twitter, which, as well as letting people know the progress of the fire, pleaded with the public to keep away from the area and not go for walks in that park.

Really? One has to wonder what planet some folks are on these days when they think it’s OK to stroll into a 12-hectare wildfire to get in their hour-a-day exercise.

Are they really that oblivious to everything going on outside their smartphone (contradiction or what) or is it just plain stupidity?

I get that not everyone is tuned into mainstream media, or even social media, but the sights, sounds and smells of a major incident were smack, bang in your face.

I’m a gambling man and I’d wager $20 it’s the same selfabsorbed twits that think it’s fine to text and drive.

I could say let them take their walk, it’s one less to worry about; but that would be cruel, wouldn’t it?

What I find equally, if not more, disconcerting is the distinct possibility these geniuses are likely eligible to vote in elections that affect us all.

Wow. Chew on that thought. So how is everything tasting?

Back to the firefighters (I had intended to use this column to praise them, before getting distracted by Dumb and Dumbers) who, once again, showed us all they’re worth their weight in gold.

Many of us — and I include myself, as I have and do make fun of my firefighting soccer teammates — crack jokes about them sitting around all day, playing table tennis, eating and sleeping.

Granted, depending on what kind of day it is, there may be times when firefighters are waiting around for something bad to happen — downtime which occurs less and less, given the multitude of emergencies fire crews are called to these days.

But last weekend was case in point why we need firefighters hanging around, just in case. Richmond Nature Park was right next door and residential areas were also close by.

I’d much rather have them, ready and waiting, playing ping pong, or not, and maybe even keeping the idiots from walking feet-first into a giant, burning bog fire.

Dear Editor, I read with interest the recent news about a Chinese lawyer wanting to run for mayor.

She claimed the Chinese are being discriminated against. Balderdash! I took a recent walk in Steveston and noticed there was only a Chinese bunkhouse.

Earlier this week, the Ontario law firm Hull & Hull published a summary of the case involving the Estate of Colleen McCullough, Australian author of the famed 1983 miniseries The Thornbirds. Ms. McCullough died in January 2015, leaving an Estate of about $2 million and a number of Testamentary documents.

One of those documents left her Estate to the University of Oklahoma Foundation. The author’s agent challenged the most recent Testamentary document, which left the Estate to the author’s husband, on the basis of undue influence. Apparently, the husband had had an affair, but the couple reconciled in 2014. Though the husband allegedly urged the deceased to make a new Will, the Court found that this did not constitute “undue” influence, even if it was “influence”. The author’s Lawyer apparently prepared the most recent Will.

This case is important because there is probably some degree of influence between spouses in their Estate planning. But the question is whether that influence is “undue” or extreme.

Dede Levitt needed to save money in the spring, so she bought seeds instead of plants for her little, 28-squarefeet patch of paradise.

She needn’t have bothered.

Thieves are seeing to it that Levitt won’t be reaping much of what she has lovingly and painstakingly sown and grown since February into her community garden plot next to Samuel Brighouse elementary.

Red onions, tomatoes, carrots and potatoes seem to be the staple of the thief’s diet, stolen from Levitt’s plot — on Minoru Boulevard, between Blundell Road and Granville Avenue — over the last couple of weeks.

She’s still got some kale left, and most of her green beans, but the whole experience is leaving a sour taste in her mouth, even though it’s only her second year in Richmond’s community gardening ranks.

Theft from community gardens is still rife in Richmond, despite a plethora of signs appealing to the thieves’ better nature and constant education campaigns by the likes of the Richmond Food Security Society, which manages the city’s 320 plots.

“There’s just no respect, it’s ridiculous,” said Levitt, who lives about a seven-minute bike ride away.

“I give kale away all the time; I give stuff to people I know and, of course, I use a lot of it myself.

“I’m not putting all this work in to feed people I don’t know. I supplement the soil and I didn’t have a lot of money, so I just grew most of them from seed. Do you know how much work that is?

“I’ve been sowing those seeds since February and nurturing them ever since, almost every day.”

Levitt, who works full-time and uses her garden plot as a way of relaxing, said a few things went missing last year, but this year’s thefts are off the charts.

“Another gardener near me is having the same problem,” she added.

“There are signs all over the place, but they don’t seem to

make a difference.”

Ian Lai, executive director of the Richmond Food Security Society, said the level of thefts from community gardens has “pretty much been consistent over the last few years, nothing much has changed.

“But it’s the same in Vancouver and Coquitlam, it’s not confined to Richmond. I’m afraid it’s just part and parcel of being in a public space.

“And I still believe that the benefits outweigh the nega-

tives; the health benefits of being outside and socializing, growing your own food.

“But we simply can’t police this kind of stuff; it happens unfortunately. There’s always a few rotten apples. And maybe there’s a reason for them stealing the food? Who knows?”

Lai, who featured on the front page of the Richmond News three years ago for the very same reason as Levitt, said he usually advises new community gardeners to get

to know their community as much as possible.

“If someone is hanging around, maybe talk to them or give them a wave or something; I find that works very well,” he said.

Lai said the city has put signs up everywhere near the plots, telling people who is growing the food, what it’s for and indicating it’s theft.

However, the signs are only in English, as per the city’s policy, which presents a “challenge,” added Lai.

‘Rainbow’ targeted Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

It only took 24 hours for the rainbow steps outside the Richmond Cultural Centre to be vandalized by homophobic sentiment.

To celebrate the kick-off to Pride Week, students at the Richmond Media Lab, based inside the centre on Minoru Boulevard, painted the steps at the entrance in the colours of the rainbow on Thursday evening.

By Friday morning, however, someone had written on the steps, seemingly in chalk, passages from the bible, condemning homosexuality.

“The rainbow is a promise from God, not an excuse to sin: Genesis 9,” read one of the messages, while “Pride goes before destruction” and “Humility comes to honor,” was written on a wall close by.

Richmond News reader Haytham Soliman, who found the vandalism, said he was worried about young minds seeing the graffiti.

“I felt really bad. Not for myself, but for all the young kids coming to the place of knowledge, which is the library,” he told the News via Facebook.

“They are seeing hate messages written on the walls; we should be encouraging kids to love each other and treat each other well, not by bullying and sending hate messages.”

Rainbow steps at the Richmond Cultural Centre were tampered with, less than 24 hours after being painted.

City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend confirmed there were two instances of graffiti at different times in different locations around the cultural centre.

“We removed the messages as soon as we became aware of them and reported them to RCMP,” said Townsend via email.

“If anyone has any information or sees this happening again, we ask them to call Richmond RCMP and quote File#RI23585.”

Chinese ride share firms still boom on black market

Ride-sharing services continue to operate on the black market in Richmond, as the B.C. government announced it will not legalize them until at least the fall of 2019.

Although the NDP, prior to last year’s election, promised to have ride sharing services in place by the end of 2018, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena said recently the timeline has been put back almost a year.

Instead, the province will increase the number of taxis in B.C. by 15 per cent, an increase of 500.

Despite the delay, multiple ride sharing services — that have been in operation in Richmond and the Lower Mainland for more than a year – are continuing to offer their services illegally and, it seems, they are doing very well.

According to the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and the BC Taxi Association, seven illegal car-sharing businesses are currently operating in Metro Vancouver, with at least five servicing

“We are aware that there are several companies...that have developed ridesourcing apps, and have been busy recruiting drivers for hire and connecting passengers with these drivers,” a ministry spokesperson told the Richmond News via email.

In fact, in July alone, the ministry issued 36 violation tickets ($1,150 each) to drivers caught operating without a passenger transportation licence — 24 of which were issued to Richmond drivers.

Most of the apps operating in Richmond, such as Longmao, Udi Kuaiche, GoKabu and Racoon Go, are in the Chinese language.

Customers can order pick-up services through the company’s account on the Chinese messaging app Wechat or through their app in the Apple store, after a simple registration.

A News reporter tried to order a ride on one of the services and almost 20 cars in Richmond showed up on the map, with one driver accepting the order within a minute.

For a ride from Lansdowne Station to Steveston, prices range from $16 to $19, while a regular taxi costs around $23.

Meanwhile, those companies appear to be expanding their services.

Udi Kuaiche has expanded beyond their Chinese platform and, in April, launched an English app in the Apple store. Racoon Go also provides services, such as designated driving and food or item delivery.

In addition, Richmond businesses — perhaps recognizing the increasing popularity of the apps — advertise on some of the ride-hailing platforms.

The ministry warns both drivers and customers of the risk of using the unlicensed services.

“It is very important that people signing up as drivers for these companies understand they are assuming all the risk related to providing the...service,” said the ministry in a statement.

“Customers need to know that if they choose to get a ride through these apps, they are choosing to take a trip in a vehicle that has not been licenced to operate legally and safely in B.C.”

The eight hectares within GCL are being leased from the City of Richmond, which is in the process of developing the 55-hectare parcel into a natural sphagnum moss bog reserve with public boardwalks, as well as community-oriented urban agriculture and open leisure space.

Harbut said, out of necessity, the farm will explore irrigation efficiencies, as not enough natural water reaches the GCL for farming and the farm will depend on costly municipal water.

Brodie said the GCL, once eyed by past councillors for a trade centre and condos, will benefit the community “while honouring its designation as farmland within the ALR and protecting the site’s important natural ecology.”

Surrounded by condos to the west and south and a new Walmart to the north, Popham said urban agriculture has an increasingly important role to play for local food security, as development puts pressure on the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Stanley Cup pub brawl leads to police probe Alyse Kotyk RICHMOND NEWS

Richmond RCMP are seeking the public’s help to identify a suspect in an alleged pub assault that took place during the Stanley Cup finals.

On June 7, Mounties were called to a pub, understood to be the Pioneer’s Pub, on No. 3 Road near Williams Road. In the heat of the Stanley Cup final’s game five excitement, an altercation took place between some of the pub’s patrons.

Allegedly, a 57-year old Richmond man was hit with a chair by one suspect and hit in the face by a second.

While the RCMP arrested the first suspect, Richmondite Alistair Charles Newman, 62, who was accused of assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon, the second suspect fled.

“Although one suspect was arrested and charged, a second suspect is outstanding.

The Richmond RCMP have exhausted our investigational avenues and would appreciate any assistance in identifying and locating him,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang in an emailed statement.

From therapy, to border security, to chasing birds off the tarmac, these four-legged Vancouver International Airport workers do it all.

On Monday, 18 dogs were out in the international departures terminal, accepting pats from YVR visitors as staff showed off the important roles they play every day.

“The work these dogs do to keep the terminal and the community safe and also travelers calm and happy is immeasurable,” said Reg Krake, director of customer care at YVR. “These dogs, along with their handlers and respective organizations are vital members of our airport community.”

Det. Danielle Getzie, a Canada Border Services Agency, has worked with her eightyear-old canine companion, Nova, since the pup was less than a year old. Together, the pair searches for drugs and guns at the airport.

“She finds whatever she’s going to find, she tells me there’s something there (by sitting) and then she gets rewarded with a tennis ball. So it’s all about play.”

Getzie said Nova sometimes finds suspicious items six or seven times a day and some days doesn’t find anything at all.

“We cover vast areas. Depending on where we are searching, we’re going to get different amounts of hits,” Getzie said.

“Basically we’re in search mode and we’re out hunting.”

Another dog with an important role at YVR is Pilot, a mudi (Hungarian hunting dog), who has been helping to scare away birds on the airfield since November.

“He’s a really good dog,” said Josh Ng, Pilot’s handler and caretaker. “He’s really fun to work with.”

Meanwhile, five-month-old Wilbur doesn’t have a specific job at YVR, but he’s in training to become an assistance dog with Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) through

a sponsorship with the airport.

Sarah Gallagher, a PADS volunteer and airport employee who is helping to train Wilbur, brings the energetic pup to work every day.

“He’s a puppy-in-training, so he is learning how to socialize and learning his manners,” Gallagher said.

“He comes to meetings with me, he’s in my office, he will sit and he has to be able to settle…he has to walk through the terminals from time to time and not get distracted, so it’s a really fantastic training ground for him.”

YVR sponsored three PADS puppies in March. While the puppies won’t actually work at the airport when they’re older, they will eventually take on one of four jobs: a service dog; hearing dog; accredited facility dog or PTSD dog for veterans and first responders.

Another airport program making use of these four-legged helpers was launched about a year ago.

Known as the “Less Airport Stress Initiative,” or LASI, the program partnership with

For Yvonne Jackson, who brings her Bernese mountain dog, Branston, to the airport, the effect a simple interaction can have for travelers is remarkable. “(The travelers) just have a calm that comes over them and a smile to their face,” Jackson said. “It’s just nice to see.”

With all these dogs around the airport, it can be tempting to give them all a pat.

However, Krake reminds visitors that most of these dogs are on the job and that it’s important to ask their handler if they can be pet.

“While we encourage you all to interact with our ambassador dogs, it’s also important to remember that it isn’t all treats and snuggles for these dogs,” he said. “At YVR, almost all the dogs you see today are actually working animals.”

While supportive of the overall energy savings, AMA notes bright LED lights emit blue-rich light (appearing white to the human eye), which can affect melatonin production and imperil sleep.

As such, it recommends lights be set to 3,000 Kelvins.

AMA also recommends: “All LED lighting should be properly shielded to minimize glare and detrimental human and environmental effects, and consideration should be given to utilize the ability of LED lighting to be dimmed for off-peak time periods.”

The city presently does not shield new LED street lights, however shields can be installed upon request, when light is overly obtrusive.

“Where we have challenges minimizing light trespass, house side shields have been installed,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

To date, only a handful of complaints have reached city hall since the conversions began in 2017. “…We have only received approximately 10 complaints where shielding was required. The use of [a] house side shield does create other problems, such as reduced light levels on the sidewalks and in certain cases on roadways, reducing lighting standards,” noted Townsend, via email.

Residents can request for a house side shield by calling the city’s Public Works Service Centre at 604244-1262.

The 2,600-plus lights replaced to date have cost the city $790,000, saving it about 810,000 kWh of power and about $80,000 annually.

The city owns and operates over 11,000 street lights. BC Hydro owns and operates an additional 2,300.

BC Hydro notes sodium lamps last only 20,000 hours, while LED lights last about 50,000 hours and technology advancements may top 100,000 hours.

A Richmond Toastmaster is making a run at becoming vice-president of the international branch of the public speaking organization.

Margaret Page, a Delta resident, is a member of Spotlight Speakers, one of about 20 Toastmaster clubs in Richmond.

Her bid to become a VP of Toastmasters International concludes with a campaign speech and upwards of 100 interviews at the Toastmasters International annual conference in Chicago on Aug.21.

“I’m very honoured. I didn’t envision this when I joined (15 years ago),” said Page, who said she ran several small businesses prior to becoming a business coach and trainer.

A

wildfire on the Department of National Defense (DND) lands in central Richmond has been contained but could burn underground for weeks, months or even years, according to experts in the field.

Firefighters are now saturating the peatland with water in hopes of extinguishing it permanently.

The fire — one of the biggest in living memory in Richmond — was first reported last Thursday evening and ended up ravaging 12.3 hectares of the 55 hectare forested parcel confined by No. 4 and Shell roads, Alderbridge Way and Westminster Highway.

However, Dr. James Michael Waddington, one of Canada’s eminent ecohydrologists, who studies peat bogs, warned that the danger may not yet be over.

In an email interview with the Richmond News, Waddington, of McMaster University in Ontario, said, “…fires can smoulder underground in peat for weeks, months and even years after initial ignition and then reignite the surface.”

He added that if peatlands, such as the DND lands, do not get enough water, the organic material — which can be several metres deep — becomes denser and easier to ignite.

“This means it releases more energy when it burns, allowing it to potentially ignite a layer of organic soil below it in the ground, thereby allowing the fire to propagate downwards.

These peat fires are very costly and difficult to extinguish,” said Waddington.

The drier a bog gets, the easier it is for trees to establish themselves, perpetuating dry conditions, he said.

“This increases fuels for wildfire and increases water losses from the soil through transpiration — both of which make the soil drier and denser and increase burn severity,” added Waddington.

Richmond Fire-Rescue’s Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gray echoed Waddington’s concerns, saying, “I’d be speculating, but peat fires can burn for years and years and years undetected.”

ast Friday, smoke billowed into the air, mixing with smoke from Interior fires, thus leaving a haze across the Lower Mainland.

However, said Gray on Tuesday afternoon, “we’re still actively working on a wildfire. So we’ve secured a perimeter and established a containment line as of Saturday.”

Gray said Shell Road, between Alderbridge and Westminster, will remain closed into the weekend as a crew of regional firefighters slowly disbands.

“So that containment line, we’re transitioning it to less staffing to operate — so take out the pumps and run on (city water main) pressure.

We’ll see if that works; I’m confident it will.”

Kevin Gray Gray said flying ashes posed a risk to nearby homes and parks, but noted the roads acted as an adequate fire break, had it grown any larger.

On Friday, at the peak of the fire, Gray said there were 40 Richmond firefighters on the scene followed by about two dozen members of BC Wildfire Service.

Military personnel, RCMP, Richmond Fire-Rescue and excavators were all on scene on Friday to help combat the blaze which on-the-ground crews described as “stubborn.”

Several float planes were also used to douse the fire from the air as Richmondites bore witness to a rare air brigade.

On Friday, City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend told the News the fire started in the southeast corner of DND property. Townsend explained that smoke could be smelled overnight on Thursday, but the fire could not be located. Fire

crews found the fire around 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

“As soon as I got on the scene (Friday morning) and assessed the situation, talked to the two officers that were here, it was escalating quite quickly,” said Gray.

“We knew what we were up against and are very fortunate to have it contained in the DND Lands, because we were really trying to protect the [Richmond] Nature Park as well,” added Gray.

As the fire was not close to any water source, crews had to run lengthy hoses to get water to it, including clearcutting a path toward the hot zones.

Gray said Richmond firefighters are not typically equipped to combat wildfires.

“Primarily, Richmond Fire-Rescue is structural firefighting; [that] is what we excel at. So when we get out of the houses and into the bush, our gear is not the right type of equipment.

We’ve transitioned into the right, lighter gear, but some of the damage has already been done to our staff with a lot of blisters and that sort of stuff.”

By Tuesday, fire crews from Vancouver, Port Moody and District of North Vancouver continued battling the fire, said Gray.

He said the cause of the fire is undetermined at this point, although BC Wildfire Service has listed the suspected cause as “human.”

“We’ve known there have been encampments in the area, whether it’s the Nature Park or the DND Lands, for years,” said Gray.

If it was not human-related, Gray speculated the fire could have been smouldering for some time.

oun. Harold Steves said part of the reason for the fire is a lack of water naturally reaching the area.

As a result of surrounding residential development and an increasingly efficient municipal water pumping system, water is not saturating the bog throughout the year, as it once did, said Steves, 81, a retired teacher and active farmer.

“We’ve closed all of Richmond off, got rid of all the flood gates, and put in pump stations. We’ve covered the ditches, so we suck the water out but there’s no way of getting it back in,” said Steves.

Now, the bog is effectively hemmed in and dependent on direct rainwater.

The DND lands were previously farmed, prior to the Second World War, said Steves, noting his father once farmed the land. Even in the summer, water would be present at or near the surface, he said.

Steves said a canal is needed to irrigate the Garden City Lands and even the DND lands.

Waddington warns that with climate change and hotter, drier summers, these bog fires — not unlike Delta’s 200-hectare Burns Bog fire in 2016 — will be more frequent.

Steves suggested removing the forest and keeping the land mowed, like the Garden City Lands.

Waddington also said the land should be irrigated and the trees need to be thinned or removed to allow the native sphagnum moss bog to recover.

“It is critical to restore sphagnum mosses to the surface of these drained peatlands to reduce fire risk and the poor air quality that is associated with peat fires,” said Waddington.

What’s more, he noted, is bogs are dense carbon sinks and peatland fires release carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Waddington’s research, found in Scientific Reports, argues “that restoration efforts are a necessary measure to mitigate the risk of carbon loss in managed peatlands under climate change.”

A study conducted by John Hopkins University showed that hearing loss for people over 65 years old may increase the risk of cognitive problems and even dementia.

The primary researcher, Dr. Frank. Lin, an otologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, says that hearing loss may play an important role in brain health. His team found that adults with hearing loss are significantly more likely than adults with normal hearing to develop dementia. Description of coin grades are as follows: VG is very good, F is fine, VF is very fine, EF or XF is extra fine and AU is almost uncirculated.

The amount of wear on the coin determines which grade the coin is classified as. Sometimes you see a coin graded as VF/XF. That means the coin is in between those two grades.

Uncirculated means a coin is new and never been in circulation. These coins are assigned a MS (mint state) followed by a number between 60 and 70.These are related to how nice of uncirculated the coin is, with the higher numbers being better grades. All of the above relate to coins issued for use in circulation. Other coins were issued only for collectors in set or as singles and they use different terms such as PL (proof like) or Proof.

Coinage verses Medal dies are terms used to describe the direction of the portrait when a coin is turned over from side to side. Canadian coins are almost always Medal dies since when you turn the coin over sideways the designs are facing up (^^). American coins are Coinage dies as you turn the coin over sideways the other side is facing down ( ). There are some Canadian coins that are errors where the die is Coinage or part way turned. These can be worth considerable amounts.

The term Tombac is used to describe the 1942 5 cent made out of Brass since there was also a regular 5 cent made in nickel. All 1943, 1944 and 1945 nickels had a Roman numeral “V” for 5 on them and are known as Victory nickels. All 1943 nickels were Tombacs, while the 1944 and 1945 steel with a blue chrome plating. Some missed the plating and are worth more money.

U-pick blueberry season has always been a semi-secret gem for local residents over the years, said farmer Sonny Sidhu, of G S Farm on No. 4 Road.

However it’s gaining in popularity so much that some remindful public education may be required for those visitors hoping to score the plumpest blues in town.

Sidhu says he and other farms in Richmond are having to keep a keener eye on pickers these days.

Theft is a recurring problem (Sidhu just installed a fence along one property line) and so are a minority of pickers who don’t respect rules, including littering.

3 Follow picking rules. Sonny says: “Each farm has their own system for proper crop management. If assigned, pick only in designated areas.”

4 Know how to pick. Sonny says: “Blueberries grow in clusters and, when completely ripe, should be picked in bunches (by cupping the clusters in your hands) to avoid dropping berries. Picking one by one generally causes unnecessary shaking of the bush, causing the surrounding berries to fall.”

5 Respect the land. Sonny says: “A farm field is a natural environment frequently visited by many types of wildlife. Do not leave any garbage or litter in the field.”

6 Mornings and evenings are best. Sonny says: “It’s peaceful; you can hear the birds singing.”

7 Don’t leave children unattended.

“While it’s good for children to experience and learn about how and where their food comes from, a farm is not a playground.”

8 Enjoy samples. Sonny says: “There are many varieties of blueberries. We encourage people to enjoy picking and sampling a few, within reason.”

9 No smoking. “The ground is generally dry and there is a potential for fire.”

10 No stealing. Sonny says: “I had to put up a fence over there so people wouldn’t jump the property line. ...I’ve had people come and fill their backpacks. ...Farmers work very hard year round to take care of their crops.”

Seven, circular hookedrug textile pieces, mounted inside City Centre Community Centre, is said to symbolize the various steps Richmond citizens have taken towards helping create a diverse community.

Stepping Stones is the latest in Richmond’s collection of public art works.

Rug-hooking is a relatively unsung craft that involves hooking and looping yarn or strips of fabric through a base, such as burlap or linen.

“Each of the seven pieces has been assigned a large circular overarching shape, such as a fingerprint or a whirlpool and a matching colour,” explained Flagel.

Each of the colours also holds significance, for example: Black represents the darkness of history, such as the internment camps; the brown one, featuring multilingual characters, represents cultural diversity; and the green maze symbolizes harmony, stillness and nature.

GOING AWAY THIS FALL OR WINTER?

The new Mozza restaurant at the Radisson Hotel Vancouver Airport is now offering delicious homey Italian cuisine to local customers and tourists.

Formerly known as “Fresh” and serving fusion style food, the restaurant has been renamed “Mozza,” and focuses on Italian style cuisine.

“It’s not uncommon for hotels to rebrand their restaurant every five to seven years. It makes things new and exciting,” said Gregory Walsh, executive chef of Mozza Restaurant and Lounge.

“We thought that the direction towards Italian food is approachable, everybody knows it, and everybody is comfortable with it. Italian cuisine lets you make that leap of faith.

“And we want a very homey feeling for people who are traveling and staying in our hotel. Things that are a little homier are often appreciated because they are away from home.”

Walsh said the restaurant’s name “Mozza” is short for mozzarella.

“It’s easy to say “Mozza”, it’s not complicated — just like all the things we want the restaurant to be, simple, straightforward,” he said. The restaurant has prepared a brand new menu to cater to different customers’ Italian food preferences.

ternational based, now it’s all Italian based,” said Walsh.

For example, the new menu includes food such as chicken parmigiana, spaghetti with meatballs, pizzas with Italian sausages and some other pasta dishes, according to Walsh.

Mozza also plans to offer food such as angel hair pasta with crab and gnocchi with

mushroom.

“They’re very straightforward and familiar flavours. If you don’t understand 100 per cent of the dish, you can understand enough that you are comfortable with it and can enjoy,” said Walsh.

The restaurant’s popular traditional prime buffet, which offers prime rib along with other dishes every Friday and Saturday night, has been kept, but is slanted more towards Italian as well “Instead of putting sauce inspired by French cuisine on the steak, we make the sauce with chianti butter and Italian red wine,” said Walsh.

“We might have had an Asian style noodle salad before, but now we do Italian style pasta salad, maybe with sundried tomatoes. It’s the details that matter.”

Meanwhile, Mozza will be adding more Italian wine to its alcohol selection, and the restaurant’s sun room can host up to 30 people allowing groups to dine together with a great garden view.

The New York Times has called Richmond a “one-stop paradise for lovers of Asian food.”

With a superb collection of Asian restaurants here, it can be overwhelming to decide where to eat, but “Feast Asian Dining Festival” will help you with that.

Yuan’s Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine, near Aberdeen Centre, is the first restaurant to join Feast.

The new festival — co-produced by the owners of the Richmond News, Glacier Media, and Hamazaki Wong Marketing Group — will feature dozens of Asian restaurants, mostly in Richmond, that will provide guided dining adventures to customers from Oct. 10 – 21.

It will offer each group of four or six a choice between two different traditional Shanghai-style food packages.

Although Yuan’s is already well received within the local Chinese community, Hayley Zhou, director of the restaurant, hopes the event will help introduce their cuisine to a more diverse audience.

“We see the festival as a way to leverage one of our cultural assets here in Richmond, which is known for having some of the best Asian food across all of North America,” said Sonny Wong, co-producer of the festival and creative director at Hamazaki Marketing Group.

“We have created the menu to ensure it will be a great experience for everybody,” said Zhou.

“For example, we understand that many people outside of the Chinese community don’t like to eat meat on the bone, so we opted out these types of food.”

“We want to celebrate Asian food restaurants and bring them to a wider audience.

“We don’t want people going to Chinese restaurants, for example, just to order fried rice or sweet and sour pork,” said Chow.

Similar to other dining festival experiences, restaurant participants at Feast Asian Dining Festival will offer a set of signature dishes at promotional prices during the festival. “[Other dining festival] restaurants usually have a promotional price based on an appetizer, entree and dessert feature. Soccer standout getting an early jump on her university career Surrey will now represent B.C. at the Soccer Canada Toyota National Championships in early October.

That tournament happens to take place in South Surrey and Coastal F.C. will also be participating.

Jacqueline Tyrer hasn’t even started Grade 12 at McRoberts and she already has a jump on her university soccer career.

“Normally, our games are toe-to-toe with that team,” said Tyrer. “Both our league games ended 0-0 so they have been really tight. Finally, we broke through.”

The 17-year-old defender made the early commitment to the University of British Columbia and suited up in a recent friendly against the TSS Rovers.

Tyrer is not only United’s starting centre back, but their dead ball specialist as well. Two of her corner kicks in the cup final resulted in goals.

She will be heading to the university’s campus next month to participate in preseason training sessions.

“During practice that week my corners were not good at all, to be honest,” laughed Tyrer.

“You like to commit to a school early so you go into Grade 12 not stressing about which school you want to go to,” explained Tyrer, who was working last week as an instructor at Mike Quinn’s summer soccer school.

“Then I took three right before the game and they were not good again. My coach just told me just to take them anyways.

“I have practiced (free kicks) a lot. Just going to the field and kicking the ball with my friends.”

“I also went to a charity event (recently) and just starting to do more things with them.”

With the structure of rep youth soccer — namely the B.C. Premier Soccer League — Tyrer hasn’t played in her hometown since the U13 level.

She initially took her promising career to South Surrey where she played for Coastal FC’s 2000 age group.

She has played a wide range of positions in her career, starting as an attacking player then moving to fullback before finding a home in the centre of the park.

After an outstanding four-year run playing at the NCAA Division One level, Leah Lum is taking her career to another level.

“I always eat Chinese food when I go home during Christmas break and for family dinner in summer.

The 21-year-old McRoberts graduate will suit up in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League as a member of the Shenzhen-based Kunlun Red Star that is developing players for Team China and the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

“My dad likes to cook tofu and rice with barbecue pork and we, as a family, celebrate Chinese New Year.

“When I was in college during Chinese New Year, my mom and dad would come out to Connecticut to hand out the red envelopes to me and all my teammates.”

The Richmond native has established herself as one of the top players in the history of the University of Connecticut women’s hockey program.

She is eager to skate with the up-tempo Red Stars and help Team China get to the next level.

She appeared in all 39 games for the Huskies last season, tallying 10 goals and 20 assists.

In her senior year, she became just the third player to reach 100 career points.

Lum was selected to join the 2022 China Olympic Camp in Shenzhen for an 11-day training and testing showcase this May. And she proved to have one of the most noteworthy showings of the session.

“I never thought I would have an opportunity to get to play for Team China, but now being here and seeing everything, it’s becoming more and more real to me.”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Captain Ray Martyniuk, on July 26, 2018.

Ray fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and passed peacefully with family by his side. He leaves behind his wife Ted, sons Brett and Jamie and their wives Jess and Gabby, and is pre-deceased by his former partner, Elaine.
