When I heard that a new movie called Crazy Rich Asians was being released, I rolled my eyes and dismissed it as yet another film that plays on the stereotype of “rich Asians.”

Not long after I had forgotten about it, the film re-entered my sights as a smash hit Hollywood blockbuster – the first in 25 years to feature an all-Asian cast.

I had totally underestimated its potential popularity.

Of course, I can’t say whether it was the title that drew a crowd — perhaps some were already fans of the novel from which the film is adapted. But romantic Cinderella stories like this are not rare, and Asian films are played all the time in the city, yet this one stood out.

I watched the film at SilverCity at Riverport. It was a smoky Monday night and the theatre was so packed with people (from all ethnicities, I might add) I had to sit in the third row and crane my neck the entire time.

I admit, I enjoyed it.

Crazy is a light-hearted comedy with a Chinese musical score, scenes of Asian street food, which dearly I miss, grand houses where people wearing gorgeous dresses and jewelry throw luxurious parties.

What I’m not so comfortable with is the word “Asians” in the title – for a story that’s only about the top one per cent of Chinese-Singaporean families – it’s too sweeping and simplistic.

I don’t blame the filmmaker; it’s probably a marketing strategy, and it worked. But many people make the same mistakes in real life when they generalize about a certain group or make judgements based on certain stereotypes.

I can’t remember how many times I have heard, “Chinese people are rich” or seen people connecting Chinese or Asians to money laundering, house flipping or bad driving. Someone even asked on my personal Facebook page why I don’t launder money or flip houses “like other Chinese.”

Granted, there are a large number of wealthy Asian people here – not everyone can afford to come to Canada in the first place. But there are also many Asians, like myself, who paid for their school themselves and are working hard but can’t afford to buy a home.

It’s also true that some Chinese investors have made headlines due to illegal schemes, but there are also Chinese millionaire immigrants here, some of whom I have interviewed, who don’t own property for investment purposes.

Watching a film is fun, but perpetuating stereotypes about certain groups won’t do anything to counter one-sided views or ignorance. Blaming “Asians” for all our problems is even more laughable.

Regardless, I do appreciate the fact that the film has introduced different schools of thought and values from the other side of the planet to a wider audience here – I’ve watched many more realistic Asian films here with less than 10 people in the audience.

Ironically, sometimes a catchy title based on a stereotype is what’s needed to improve cross-cultural understanding.

This movie was really phenomenal. Yes, in many ways it does perpetuate a stereotype of rich Asians, but in order for Asians to be able to hit Hollywood — something that’s so big — we need to perpetuate a stereotype for people to actually watch a movie, to be actually further understood.

Planet is what we eat Dear Editor,

Re: “Earth, we have a problem,” Richmond News, Aug. 16.

I’d like to commend the News for covering the international PlaceBased Food Systems conference held in Richmond and posing the question “how do we, in Richmond, go from thinking sustainably, to living sustainably?”

Exploring ideas on growing our own gardens, limiting housing sizes, eating locally sourced foods and promoting community garden plots and urban agriculture are all actions we can take to lower our ecological footprint. But, in reading these articles, what felt lacking in this coverage was a missed opportunity to address sustainability as it relates to food choice – something we all have control over.

When considering climate change, are people aware that what we eat has a profound impact? That our dietary preferences, specifically the consumption of meat and dairy products, contribute substantially to global warming?

The fact is that animal agriculture accounts for 18 per cent of all global warming gases (and that’s conserva-

tive – World Bank scientists estimate the number closer to 51 per cent).

It’s responsible for one-third of all fresh water consumption in the world today. To produce one hamburger uses 3,000 litres of water – the equivalent of showering for two months. We’re using one-third of Earth’s land for livestock or its feed.

Instead of funneling crops through animals, the land we’re using to grow crops could be used to feed people directly.

The Bard of the Yukon Last week, Mark Ryan of the Prince George Citizen newspaper wrote an article about the famous poet and writer, Robert Service. British born, he sailed to Canada in 1894 and lived in Dawson City (Yukon) from 1909 to 1912. His writings earned him the nickname “Bard of the Yukon”. Mr. Ryan’s article, however, reproduces a writing of Mr. Service years ago, in tribute to the frontier gold miners, now applicable to the great people fighting the fires today. The article also discusses the Estate Mr. Service left, for his wife and child. Mr. Service died in 1958 and his wife, in 1989. The article then examines some fundamental Estate planning concepts. Among them is the oft overlooked implication of a title transfer to create a joint tenancy (and avoid probate fees). On the death of one of the joint owners, the survivor takes title and may do whatever she or he wants with the asset (be it real estate, a bank account or other asset). That is an issue every person who owns property has to eventually think about.

A bus stop billboard at No.3 and Blundell roads is turning heads, not because of any product it’s selling but because of the politics it’s advocating.

The billboard reads “Freedom Democracy for China, End One-Party Dictatorship” in both English and Chinese, with the picture of a flying eagle.

These advertisements were put up by Vancouver Chinese Human Rights Watch Group, an advocacy group with 20 or so members, mostly comprising immigrants from mainland China, many living in Richmond.

“We want to make our small contribution to promoting democracy and freedom in China and show our support for people fighting for it inside China,” said Louis Huang, co-founder of the group, who moved to Richmond in 2002.

“We also hope the ads will encourage more Chinese-Canadians to step up and give their own voices on these issues because right now many are too afraid to do so.”

Huang said he and other members, who paid for the ad themselves, are very concerned about human rights and freedom of speech in China, especially after President Xi Jinping came to power.

“I think it has become worse in recent years.

Rights lawyers have been detained, there’s increased oppression in Tibet and Xinjiang where people are sent to ‘re-education camps,’ there’s the lifelong tenure of Xi’s presidency, all show that,” said Huang.

Formed five years ago, the group has hosted multiple events to raise awareness about democracy in China, such as an annual memorial of the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989; it has also held protests in front of the Chinese consulate in Vancouver for Liu Xiaobo, a human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner who died in jail in 2017.

This is the first billboard Huang’s group has bought, and they plan to run more ad campaigns promoting human rights in China at locations where there is a large Chinese population.

What also concerns the group is Chinese officials’ influence on local Chinese organizations, which is at “a level that should be brought to the attention of Canadian politicians,” said Huang.

“We have received a lot of phone calls from people showing their support,” said Huang.

He said last year, a planned event in Richmond to commemorate the 60th anniversary of a campaign to purge alleged right-wing people from within the Communist Party of China and abroad, was disrupted by the Chinese consulate in Vancouver.

“Many Chinese people are aware of the wrongdoings of the Chinese government, but they are too afraid to criticise it, even when they live overseas.

“Because they, more or less, still have connections in China; some have businesses there, or some have families, who can be at risk if they criticize China from abroad.”

Tieying Yang, a member of the group and a Richmond resident who moved here in 2015, said his wife and child, who are still living in China, received warnings from officials in China after he participated in a human rights protest in Vancouver.

“My family asked me to be more careful. I’m worried about them, but I also don’t want to stop pursuing and working for what I believe in. But many people would just step back,” said Yang.

“The event organizer booked the venue of a local Chinese-Canadian organization, but the organization cancelled it at the last minute because of the Chinese consulate’s intervention. This is one example of how the Chinese government is influencing overseas Chinese groups,” said Huang.

“We moved to Canada for its democracy and freedom, but some organizations or group leaders here are not following those values for their own interests. We are trying our best to fight against this type of behaviour, for the good of China and Canada.”

The Chinese consulate in Vancouver didn’t respond to the Richmond News’ interview request.

Car theft leads to drug bust Multiple charges have been approved against a Richmond man in relation to a vehicle theft that led Surrey Mounties to a significant drug and weapon seizure.

Robert Leo Jones, 37, has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, driving while disqualified and breaching court imposed conditions. Surrey RCMP confirmed with the Richmond News that those charges were in relation to a stolen 2018 Audi Q7.

According to Mounties, that same vehicle was tracked to a residence on 137a Street near 105a Avenue in Surrey last Wednesday.

On Thursday, RCMP searched that residence and found two loaded sawed-off shotguns, two sawed-off rifles, two handguns, four stolen motorcycles, one crossbow, firearm ammunition, body armour, swords and knives.

They also found nearly 3,000 doses of a variety of suspected drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and heroin.

No charges except the ones against Jones have been laid. The investigation is still ongoing.

A homebuilder who ordered the cutting of a large sequoia tree on public property on Gibbons Drive agreed, last year, to an outof-court settlement with the City of Richmond.

But the non-disclosure agreement, following a short police investigation, isn’t sitting well with at least one area resident, who tried to defend the tree at the time of cutting.

“I’m not happy with that,” said Paul Dylla, who lives down the road from the tree, which now stands as half of its past glory.

“For a couple reason,” Dylla continued.

“First of all, it doesn’t provide any deterrent to other builders because they don’t know how much they can get fined for something like this. Some will look at this as a cost of doing business.”

In 2016, the city claimed the owner of 6691 Gibbons Drive repeatedly hired a pruner to cut down a tree, in front of the property but on municipal property, valued at between $75,000 and $100,000.

At the time of the cutting, property records obtained by the Richmond News showed the property was owned by Jasvir Cheema, who has built a number of homes in Richmond.

Cheema could not be reached for comment then or now, via phone numbers linked to him on city permit applications.

“I can advise that the settlement was with the property owner who owned the property at the time of the incident. The settlement was concluded in early 2017,” said Townsend.

Dylla said he had spoken to city officials last year about what came about from the incident, which had upset neighbours. He said it was his understanding that the city could settle for an amount higher than the prescribed maximum bylaw fine of $10,000 for illegally cutting down a tree.

Townsend confirmed that was the case.

Dylla said he’d prefer it be public knowledge that developers are being fined for illegally cutting down trees, even if it means the city going to court.

“By the city being mum on this, they’re saying they’re not being tough on enforcement.

How will other owners know that the city takes this seriously?” he asked.

“If it concludes in court, that becomes public info and we’d all know what happened.

And it would be public record.”

With summers getting hotter and a haze of wildfire smoke appearing to settle over Richmond every August, the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly obvious.

One sector seeing direct impacts of this change is agriculture and, to address these effects, the provincial and federal governments have agreed to provide $6 million to help build “resilience to climate change at the farm level.”

Announced last week, the Climate Change Adaptation Program will establish regional strategies, provide support for new projects and fund research projects on B.C. farms.

While this is a good start, for Kent Mullinix, director of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems, adaptation may not go far enough.

“It’s good that the government wants to invest in an agriculture food system sector that can adapt to climate change,” he said. “I hope the support extends to mitigation, in addition to adaptation.”

To qualify for funding under the Farm Adaptation Innovator Program, the projects must be useable at the farm-level, by an individual farm operator and fall under the categories of soil and crop management, livestock and pasture management, water management or whole farm and business management.

For example, a former research project that received funding was one that looked at the increase in pests that thrive in hotter, drier climates, how these affect potato crops and how they can be managed as average temperatures rise.

Packages to apply for funding under the new program will be available this fall.

“The B.C. government is committed to helping British Columbia farmers adapt to climate change through sustainable operations while expanding production,” said provincial agriculture minister, Lana Popham in a statement.

In total, all four groups have accounted for 4.78 million fish either being caught (2.6 million) or passing the counting station to spawn.

Fresh Fraser River sockeye salmon is being sold at Fisherman’s Wharf in Steveston for as low as $5 per pound, as estimates of a large, dominant spawning run hold up.

Of those Fraser River sockeye caught to date, Canadian commercial fishers have taken about 1.4 million, while First Nations have taken about 426,000. Meanwhile, U.S. fishers have taken about 725,000.

“The observer at Hells Gate has reported very good sockeye migration over the past week,” noted the Pacific Salmon Commission in its weekly report Friday.

Da Costa said fishers are generally pleased with the past two commercial openings since Aug. 6. A third opening occurred Tuesday and another is rumoured later in the week as the summer run ramps up.

Jaime Da Costa, manager of Steveston Harbour Authority, says the wharf is bustling with fishers and consumers.

“There’s a tonne of activity after the first opening. The fishers are extremely happy to have a shot at fishing. The stocks are high and they’re catching a lot of fish. It’s very busy at our ice plant,” said Da Costa, who hypothesized prices could come down as more fish are caught.

“Currently, First Nations food, social and ceremonial (FSC) Sockeye fisheries are underway in marine areas and the Fraser River. In addition several First Nation Economic Opportunity fisheries are being planned in the lower Fraser River,” noted a statement Friday by DFO.

The commission is maintaining its pre-season forecast of about 14 million fish this year, stemming from four “management groups.”

Currently, the river is in the midst of welcoming the summer group of sockeye, estimated to be 4.3 million fish. The late summer group (the last group of sockeye to arrive) is estimated at 7.4 million.

Only one of the four groups – the early Stuart run – has been completed. Prior to migration, the commission estimated 84,000 sockeye fish from this group, the smallest of the four. In fact, it found 125,000 came through Hells Gate, north of Hope.

Meanwhile, groups of late summer sockeye are now increasing in open ocean areas near Vancouver Island and a few of them have already migrated past Mission, noted the commission, an intergovernmental American-Canadian agency that assesses salmon populations; data it collects

“Sustained water temperatures in this range can cause severe stress to migrating sockeye and may lead to significant en-route mortality,” noted the commission, which increased escapement targets by 20 per cent for the early summer runs “to compensate for pre-season expectations of en route loss.”

Coun. Chak Au was speaking to the Richmond News in the wake of a slew of municipal and school board candidates for the October election saying the Chinese community needs a voice at city hall.

Some candidates have expressed their intention to “represent the Chinese population” in Richmond, such as school board trustee candidate Ivan Pak who hopes to “give Chinese parents a voice.”

And mayoral candidate Hong Guo’s campaign video describes Chinese

Guo has since distanced herself from the video, saying she was not involved in its production. However, in March, Guo gave a speech asking people in the Chinese community “to vote for Chinese candidates to speak on our behalf.”

However, Au said it’s important to have politicians with a diversity of backgrounds to reflect the community’s many voices, but nobody can say he or she represents one ethnicity as a whole.

“There is no single group of Chinese people and we have more than one voice in the Chinese community,” said Au. “I think what we can do is bring some different voices from the Chi-

nese community to the table, to reflect their concerns and have discussions.”

Au also tried to clear up being apparently quoted out of context recently in the Sing Tao Daily, a Chinese-language newspaper in Vancouver.

According to the Sing Tao article, Au said, “the Chinese population in Richmond has increased but their influence hasn’t increased much. People should consider how to make Richmond a Chinese city.”

As far as merchants go, Dave Scott, of his eponymous fish and chips joint, may well be Steveston Village’s elder.

Nomination documents and candidate information packages for the offices of Mayor, Councillor, and School Trustee are now available at richmond.ca/ elections, and at the Richmond Elections Office.

Dave’s Fish and Chips, on Moncton Street, rivals few other pre-1980 establishments in the village. Budget Appliances, Marine Garage and the Steveston Hotel come to mind as some of the few left standing, following the recent departure of many longstanding businesses, such as Steveston Marine and Hardware and Mary’s British Home.

The Candidate Nomination period begins on Tuesday, September 4 at 9:00 a.m. and ends on Friday, September 14, 2018 at 4:00 p.m.

Scott, 71, opened Dave’s on Canada Day in 1978 on a wing and a prayer – something you don’t see much of from modern-day merchants, he says.

“There’s a different kind of merchant now. They’re more professional, I think, than we were. A lot of us were doing things as we did it, you know, learning as we went,” said Scott.

This summer marks his 40th anniversary and with his son taking over the day-to-day operations, he’s had time to reflect on an epic journey, as far as Richmond businesses go.

Scott grew up in Victoria and came to Richmond around 1970. He married soon thereafter. But when the battery company he was working for closed, the hunt for new employment began. However, that hunt ended quickly when his mother-in-law mentioned that Steveston didn’t have a fish and chips shop.

“The next day, instead of putting out resumes, I came down to Steveston, walked around and found this shop, or building, over on Chatham. And I went home with a lease,” said Scott.

Then 31, Scott had never cooked fish and chips before.

Neither had he run a business. So he got help from his neighbour who was an accountant, and they crafted a business plan and took it to the bank.

Scott planned to open during the Steveston Salmon Festival.

“We opened around 11 (a.m.) and by that time we had a lineup down the street,” he recalled.

“That was it; we kept going,” he said.

The joint moved from Chatham to its present-day location on Moncton in 1984. In 1990, Scott expanded to a second location on Bayview Street, where Sockeye City restaurant now operates.

“I was afraid of competition,” he explained.

But in 2002, his rent was doubled at the Bayview restaurant, so he sold. This allowed him to abate back into his homely Moncton Street restaurant, which still keeps an old-timer’s charm, with porthole window doors and a novelty ship wheel at the host station near the front entrance.

“Without my customers, we would be nowhere. They’re the ones I need to thank first and foremost.”

The key to a good fried fish and chips, said Scott, is consistency. He maintains that a simple menu and mushy peas and abundant tartar sauce upon request are a staple.

Steveston, he says, is changing and losing its “quaintness.”

“I’m not happy with the direction of Steveston,” he says, sitting on his sidewalk bench, looking across the street at a four-storey structure soon to house a Save-on Foods and which seems to have maximized every square foot of space to the sidewalk.

In the 1980s, Scott was part of a revitalization plan that aimed to keep Steveston’s ostensible charm.

“There was a plan. You’d stay low along the water and go up from there,” he said, of future developments.

But influential developers have since built taller buildings along the water and Scott rues the day the City of Richmond developed the BC Packers site into Imperial Landing.

“It’s not quaint anymore. It’s really busy. They really destroyed the BC Packers land; there was a good opportunity for a park. Anyway, that’s my personal opinion,” he said.

Steveston merchant Chris Carr is closing her revered antique shop of 35 years and calling it a career.

What started as a consignment store with Carr’s mother June Lamond, Steveston General Store, on First Avenue, has fascinated curious minds, as Carr has spent countless hours buying and selling anything from furniture to all sorts of trinkets.

“Buying customers ended up being selling customers,” said Carr.

“It was nice for people to get a bit of money either downsizing or just changing décor,” she added.

“They’d see something that would remind them of their mother or grandmother or take them to another place. To me that mattered; that they enjoyed the store. It didn’t matter to me if they bought anything.”

Despite the pleasures of connecting people to memories (or vice versa when someone sold a treasured item), the store required yeoman’s work from Carr and her staff. Items purchased by Carr would typically need repolishing or a quick hammer.

Having accepted her last delivery of goods, a big sale will run from now until the end of September.

“A lot of stuff needs a coat or stain, a repair, bagging, packaging. The amount of work that happens in the backroom – not everything comes in and goes on the shelf as is. I was quite particular,” explained Carr.

“It will be a time for me to thank the community for their support over these years,” said Carr.

But, “sometimes you put something on a counter and the girls don’t have time to put it away.”

The store became a mainstay for many regulars and survived the revolution of online buy and sell classifieds.

One of her favourite memories was discovering, in 2015, an old suitcase belonging to her mom, who last remembered seeing it in New York in the 1940s.

Neither mother nor daughter could hypothesize as to where the piece of luggage — about 70x30x20 centimetres in dimension — had been all this time, and nor could the selling customer recall where it came from.

What was known is that the luggage carried Lamond’s articles to the now historic Taft Hotel building, just north of Times Square in

Manhattan. And It still had the Taft Hotel decal plastered onto the top left corner, making identification easier for Lamond.

Carr said she will miss her customers and helping community-based charities. “I’m just going to enjoy the freedom. It’s been a wonderful run. It is the customers and the people who are the hardest thing to leave.”

Traveller finds no record of hotel reservations after booking 16

Barb Taylor told the Richmond News her experience at the Westminster Highway agency has put a “bad taste in her mouth.”

She lives in Langley, and booked a trip to Vietnam with Sinorama. She had just paid her final installment for her October trip days before Sinorama’s licence was suspended.

“Why did you (Sinorama) collect my money on Friday when you knew you were in trouble?” she asked the agency.

Taylor then began independently confirming her travel bookings with airlines and hotels, as recommended by BCCP. She found her plane tickets to Vietnam had been purchased, but could not find ones for her internal Vietnam flights. As well, the hotel she called in Hanoi said it had no record of her reservation.

Earlier this month, BCCP suspended Sinorama’s licence and froze its bank accounts.

“When we did our own inspection what we found concerned us,” Tatiana ChabeauxSmith, BCCP spokesperson, told the Richmond News on Aug. 14.

BCCP worried the low amount of working capital Sinorama had would affect its ability to pay for flights, hotels and tours to honour client bookings.

Following that, BCCP decided to cancel the licence as a matter of public interest, noted BCCP vice president Shahid Noorani.

“Since the Aug. 9 decision to suspend the license, we have come to understand that Sinorama Travel has gone about cancelling travel arrangements for a large segment of consumers that booked … with them,” he wrote in the Aug. 20 notice of cancellation.

When BCCP asked to see Sinorama’s financial, commercial and corporate transaction records, the company said it could not produce them.

“The circumstances … show Sinorama Travel is unable to meet record keeping requirements under law and comply with inspection demands,” Noorani wrote, adding Sinorama then informed his office it no longer intended to do business in B.C. BCCP originally decided to inspect Sinorama after the Quebec licencing body failed to renew the licence for Sinorama Vacances Inc. The companies were separate legal entities, but linked through ownership.

At least one Richmond resident may finally get a decent night sleep now that the owner of a busy, illegal hotel next door to her has been fined $2,000 by the City of Richmond and told to close shop.

The Richmond News received a news tip earlier last week from a frustrated neighbour near Railway Avenue and Blundell Road, who said a house nextdoor was listed as a hotel on var-

“hotel” has four different room types and can accommodate two to four guests in each room, with prices from $120 per night.

However, the property is not a licensed bed and breakfast, according to the city.

Wang said the operator never hid the fact that the hotel is illegal, and told Wang she is “not scared.”

Since the operator doesn’t live there, very often the house is unsupervised and guests can access it through a keypad on the entrance door, according to Wang.

Once I was in my garden and saw topless people standing on the balcony of the house looking down at me. I was so scared,” said Wang.

“You can rent it out to anyone you’d like, but just not a hotel, please.”

This is not the first time the city has been made aware of an illegal operation on this property.

“We have issued the operator a warning letter previously and issued two tickets” last week “for continued non-compliance with our bylaws,” said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

The city also gathered evidence necessary for further enforcement action if needed and will take “progressive enforcement action” as necessary, he added.

According to the city’s bylaw, fines related to short-term residential rentals are $1,000 per offence.

Even if the operator applies for a business permit for a bed and breakfast, the house does not meet the requirements.

A B&B must be operated by the property owner, or the owner’s spouse or child, who uses the property as their principal residence. In addition, up to three rooms can be rented at the same time with a maximum of two guests per room, according to the city.

In spite of Richmond’s smoky skies, paddlers from around North America will flock to Steveston’s Imperial Landing for the seventh annual Dragon Boat Festival this Saturday.

This year, a record-breaking 78 teams are registered to race in 250-metre and 500-metre courses and an estimated 15,000 spectators are expected to line the Fraser River to watch the races.

“Team registration sold out in April and we have the maximum number of teams this year, proving how popular this event is on the North American dragon boat racing circuit,” said Ann Phelps, Dragon Boat BC’s executive director in a press release.

Even though wildfire smoke has settled over the Lower Mainland over the past few

“Of course it’s concerning.

Between races, the festival

will also host free concerts with a Latin theme, an arts and crafts tent, a variety of food trucks and the Red Truck Patio serving craft beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks.

The festival will also have three heritage dragon boats on display. The boats, given to the City of Vancouver from Hong Kong during Expo ’86, have been fully restored.

Events run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Festival-goers are encouraged to take transit as Steveston parking is limited.

One of the most challenging aspects of moving to a new country is overcoming the language barriers. A country’s language can be the gateway into its culture and its people’s way of life; when newcomers struggle to grasp the language, they have an even harder time connecting with others.

With such a vital piece of Canadian culture on the line, the Richmond School District designed a program to address such barriers.

The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program is a multi-faceted, educational initiative that has successfully been running for close to three decades. Federally funded, the program is also tuition free for permanent residents. Though its main function is to

teach English as a common language, it achieves much more than its name would suggest. Most newcomers who complete the program described it as a place where they could connect with Canadians. “Most of all,” Michael Khoo, the Director of Instruction - Continuing Education of the Richmond School District, added, “they gain a sense of belonging and have a chance to build community with others who are also new to Canada.”

Students in the program can expect to learn about the culture and history of Canada, with an emphasis on Indigenous culture and history. The days are filled with innovative lessons, field trips, and guest speakers who touch on various themes such as healthcare, education, history-geography, and lifeskills.

Khoo added that the program is also very important for social and emotional health. “You know, moving to a new place is exciting but it is not without its challenges and I think sometimes your heart yearns for the familiar, where you came from,” Khoo said. “So I think LINC helps link people to each other and facilitates those connections.”

Hoop helps students with dyslexia Research supports how there may be a link between dyslexia and a propensity for creative thinking.

Under the vaulted ceiling and twinkling lights of the Richmond Oval’s basketball courts, more than 60 high school students fought for points in a charity basketball tournament Tuesday.

It was called Hoop to Learn, organized by two university students to help high schoolers with learning challenges like dyslexia and ADHD successfully transition to post-secondary. Through the tournament and outreach, they’re hoping to raise funds for services to help those students.

“I’m dyslexic, and I felt that not enough light has been shined on this issue,” said Michael Jakac-Sinclair, who’s from Richmond and attends Carleton University.

He doesn’t want to go as far as to say the neurological condition he was diagnosed with in Grade 4 defined his entire education, since he was also a competitive swimmer.

But it definitely had an impact.

He remembers being terrified of making a mistake while participating in Model United Nations in high school.

“You feel if you slip up on a word when you’re reading out loud … there’s a pack of wolves ready to pounce on you,” he said.

“You have that anxiety built up.”

Dyslexia affects reading comprehension.

Kids with the condition often struggle answering questions about a passage they’ve read but have no trouble when a passage is read aloud to them.

“There’s a gap between someone’s intellectual ability and what we would call their basic school performance … their ability to read, write and do arithmetic,” said Erin Kline, who works with dyslexic kids at the Fraser Academy, a private school in Vancouver.

That gap, though, doesn’t mean a student is any less intelligent than one of their peers.

“Your brain isn’t underdeveloped,” JakacSinclair said. “Your brain is just working in a different way.”

“Dyslexic students are so bright,” Kline said. “They are innovative thinkers and able to see the world in a slightly different way.

They have the brains needed to solve the world’s current problems.”

Learning how to learn Jakac-Sinclair feels fortunate that his family had the resources to send him to a private school to receive Orton-Gillingham tutoring.

It’s one of several methods that help dyslexic kids find a different way to learn by exploring tactile, auditory and visual approaches.

He chose to partner with his old school for the inaugural basketball tournament. Going forward, though, he imagines he’ll partner with a variety of Lower Mainland organizations that benefit kids with learning challenges.

Jakac-Sinclair is now studying political science at Carleton. He thinks his transition was fairly smooth because he was well prepared.

But he knows some of his peers weren’t so lucky.

That’s why he teamed up with Open Doors Education Initiative and Mahtab Singh Gill, a UBC student, to organize the basketball tournament for high school kids. Games were three-on-three with each team allowed one sub. In between the games, they listened to speakers like Mark Starkey of Vancouver Basketball share how they overcame their own challenges.

“A lot of well-known athletes have learning disabilities,” Singh Gill said. “But it’s not well-known because there’s a stigma factor.”

The registration fees collected from athletes were divided in half between the winner’s purse and the Fraser Academy’s new outreach centre.

The $1,500 donation will go towards afterschool tutoring for students whose families may not be able to afford tutoring or full-time attendence at a specialized school. Even getting tested for the conditions can be costly, he says, and students need a diagnosis in order to access support services at most universities.

Transition to university is tough The transition from high school to post-secondary can be jarring for any student. For those with learning challenges, there’s an added layer of responsibility because they need to reach out to administrators to sort out paperwork for accommodations at every step of the way.

UBC, for example, offers accommodations like private exam rooms and voice-to-text software. But they require the student reach out and ask for them well in advance.

“We want to level the playing field so that the disability is not a barrier to them in demonstrating their academic competence,” said Ruth Warick, UBC’s senior accessibility advisor. “We want them to feel welcome in the university environment.”

But even if a student reaches out for these modifications, university classrooms can still be less than inviting for a dyslexic student, “A lot of university, especially in the first two years, is far more lecture-bound. It necessitates a lot of reading from slides and tends to be a lot less hands-on and less visual,” Kline said. “It doesn’t necessarily lend itself well to being a positive learning environment for dyslexic students.”

Another part of the problem, Jakac-Sinclair thinks, is the stigma surrounding learning disabilities. While no student should feel ashamed to ask for the help they need, he thinks some do.

“We realized that the intersectional traits of this issue are deeper. It goes into mental health, cost of living, one’s social life,” he said.

He’s also organized town halls so kids can learn more about their challenge and meet peers facing similar issues. He thinks feeling accepted can go a long way toward success in school.

With fears of Richmond introducing a similar plastic straw ban in line with Vancouver, The Bubble Tea Shop has launched reusable stainless steel straws for their customers.

In May, the City of Vancouver voted to ban the distribution of plastic straws as a part of the city’s Zero Waste 2040 Strategy.

The ban, which will be introduced on June 1, 2019, is problematic for the bubble tea business, as it depends heavily on its wide, colourful plastic straws.

Bubble tea drinkers have found biodegradable paper straws are not the best alternative as they often become soft and mushy and difficult for users to drink the tapioca balls in bubble tea.

“This (reusable straw) was always something in the back of our minds, we eventually had to do it,” said Ivanna Chan, owner of The Shop, underneath Canadian Superstore on No. 3 Road.

Plastic straws are still being used in-store but customers have the option to purchase the new straws and reuse them for future bubble tea purchases.

Retailing at $3.50 for the largest size — which is used for traditional bubble tea — and $3 for the smaller one, each straw also comes with a cleaning brush.

“I’m surprised not more stores are on it,” said Chan.

“The bubble tea business is very hard, now that there are so many stores in Richmond, but we try to be innovative and come up with new things.”

Since posting their new straws online only a few days ago, The Shop has gained a lot of positive attention on social media amongst their environmentally-conscious fans.

Although the Shop may be the first ones to introduce stainless steel straws, many restaurants in Steveston have already switched to using compostable ones after eight-yearold Shay Soo gave heartfelt presentations to businesses about the harmful damage plastic straws are causing to the environment.

The Shop is also planning to open a new location in Olympic Village, Vancouver in the coming weeks.

T&T Supermarket opened its third Richmond location on Aug. 16 to much fanfare and pandemonium.

About 1,000 people lined up in the morning to enter the new store at Lansdowne Centre – the former site of Woodwards, Eatons, Zellers and Target – that features Asian groceries and cuisine.

At 70,000 square feet, this is the largest of the 26 T&T Supermarkets in Canada (B.C., Alberta and Ontario).

“We opened our first T&T Supermarkets store in B.C. 25 years ago, and it was important for us to launch our biggest location to date, back where it all started,” said CEO of T&T Supermarkets Tina Lee, who opened the store with Richmond Centre MP Alice Wong and Mayor Malcolm Brodie.

“From quality fresh food, grocery items,

beauty products and ready to eat meals, we are thrilled to bring the best in Asian cuisine to Richmond, the centre of the Chinese community in the Lower Mainland,” said Lee, via an online statement.

Specific features include: the Seafood Bar where employees will cook seafood on the spot for a fee; a sit-down Asian cafeteria; a pharmacy; and a Starbucks.

The store has 14 self-serve checkouts in addition to nine cashiers.

According to T&T: “The store also boasts over 30 Asian Street Food dishes from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. There is Popcorn Chicken, a famous snack from Taiwan’s night market, Lamb Soup and Sesame Crispy Cake, a nostalgic Northern Chinese breakfast item, and Steamed Rice Rolls, which are a classic representation of Hong Kong culinary delights.”

Lansdowne Centre will be redeveloped in phases over the next decade, so it is unclear how long this store will last in the existing building, which opens into the mall.

What makes a dream home, or a dream neighbourhood? Does the location, feature or history of a place reflect who you are?

Richmond artist Phoebe Huang explores these questions in her latest work The Dream Home, which won her the B.C. regional championship at this year’s BMO 1st ART! competition.

As a visual arts student at SFU, Huang made use of green floors and architectural backdrops, alongside simple props such as a stool, a framed green airplane and wooden cut-outs, to create a fabricated “home.”

The “home” doesn’t look special, but instead plays on the idea of her mom’s ideal home; a place that reminds her of who she is – a woman growing up under the influence of military in China.

“I’m originally from Edmonton. My family lives in a neighbourhood there that used to be a military base, which was redeveloped into a residential and commercial neighbourhood,” Huang told the Richmond News.

When Huang asked her mom why she chose this place as her home after coming to Canada, her mom said “it had to do with nostalgia.”

“When she was growing up in communist China, the military played a big part in her life, in how she lived, worked and went to school,” said Huang.

“Then coming here to Canada, she wanted to find refuge in something that’s similar, in a place that she could kind of feel like she belonged to.

“And she found that having something

military in her neighbourhood was an ideal element in what she wanted to be a part of.”

Huang uses her art to explore her family story and what factors contribute towards people seeing a place as a perfect place to live – for example the houses, the people and community who live there or the history of the place.

The image shown in the background of her artwork is a shot of a real estate advertisement – including a rendering – of her neighbourhood in Edmonton that used to be a military base.

“I was interested in how the development company used the history of that place

as a way of attracting people into buying homes here, and how the history plays a part in people’s decision,” explained Huang.

“I extracted some of the military elements and made my own dissected image of the idea – the idea of a dream home.”

Huang said it’s “pretty amazing” to have won the award and is excited to represent B.C. and showcase her work at the University of Toronto from Nov. 15 to Dec. 8.

The BMO 1st ART! competition recognizes 13 art students who are in their final year of study across the country every year. Each award winner receives between $7,500 and $15,000.

Local conductor Jonathan Der feels music bridges many gaps across the globe.

Along with musical director Stephen Robb, Der, professional violinist and associate conductor of the Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra (RDYO), will conduct 53 youth musicians at the Richmond World Festival, running Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

Der, who is also on the Richmond Art Strategy Task Group, stresses the importance of musical education and says that “kids who have been in an orchestra actually perform better in school due to the discipline they receive.”

The task group, which consists of 30 community members involved in the Richmond art scene, was established to find out what the city can do in terms of art education and accessibility.

This is RDYO’s first time being invited by the city to perform at such a grand event and, to prepare for their 30-minute performance, the musicians will be going through a three-day intensive rehearsal session.

All the musicians performing at the World Festival volunteered their summer vacation when they heard about the invitation from the city.

RDYO currently has 160 members, ranging from ages six to 20; most of them are from Richmond with a few from Surrey, North Vancouver and Delta.

“Our biggest concern is finding the right venue to rehearse regularly.”

RDYO consists of junior, intermediate and senior winds and strings sections and a symphony orchestra division.

Each division has weekly rehearsals at the Brighouse United Church and the performance hall at the Richmond Cultural Centre.

But the faculty is still trying to find a rehearsal space that will fit all the divisions at once, so musicians have a chance to mingle and socialize during breaks.

RDYO will be bringing both classical and contemporary music to the main stage at the World Festival at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1. Young musicians who are interested in joining RDYO can audition for their 2018-2019 season in September.

Passion turns into profession The full album is set to be released in January of 2019 and will include 10 to 12 tracks of spokenword poetry that are infused with elements of rap, hip hop and clowning and each accompanied by video and soundtrack.

From passion to profession, Richmond’s Angelica Poversky is turning her love for poetry into more than just a pleasurable pastime.

“This is a new thing for me, all of my past slam poetry performances have been without music, so it’s exciting to create,” added Poversky.

This year, Poversky has, among other notable achievements, laid down the first tracks on her soon-to-be-released album and toured Canada with her poetry trio.

Three other artists behind the album are producer Moses Clyde Caliboso and artistic director Rhé, who are both from Richmond, and film maker Merissa Victor.

Poversky is not an unfamiliar name in Richmond —she was a former member of a local improv troop called “Richmond in 3D,” participated in the Diversity talent show at the Gateway Theatre, a winner of the 2015 Richmond Arts Award and has been featured in the Richmond News numerous times.

Entropy of Forgiveness, the title of one of the tracks, is about self-acceptance and overcoming internal doubts.

Her budding interest for spoken-word poetry began when she joined the poetry club at McMath secondary; she then attended the Hullabaloo youth poetry festival and started going to poetry slams (a competition in which poets perform spoken word poetry).

But Poversky soon realized that slam poetry was “too restricting with its rules and time limits” and wanted to “work outside of that and explore other options.”

Her most recent artistic accomplishment is releasing the initial tracks on her new, original spokenword album.

“The working title for the album is ‘Living Memorials’ and its theme is about bringing the past into the present and carrying the present into the future,” explained Poversky.

The music video for this track was released in January and was chosen as a winner for the Inspire Mental Wellness challenge hosted by Adobe 1324 and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation.

Poversky is also a part a poetry trio named the Tiny Tricycle Poets; along with Andrew Warner and Emma Field, the three are devoted to bridging the gap between spoken word and play and has toured across 25 Canadian cities in the summer of 2018.

When asked about the spoken-word poetry community in Richmond, Poversky said that “there are a lot of people in Richmond who write poetry, but there are no consistent poetry events here, so it’s hard to have that community.

“It’s important to understand one’s worth as an artist. Although it’s nice that I’m no longer being paid in Starbucks gift cards. I performed for free for a long time and a lot of artists are still expected to donate their craft.”

Freshh 2.0 will dance its final performance of the year at the Richmond World Festival on Sept. 1.

The Richmond dance team has been celebrating all month after recently claiming a bronze medal at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Phoenix, Arizona.

Freshh 2.0, from Richmond’s Fresh Groove Productions, competed against teams from 50 countries between Aug. 5 and 11.

The nine Lower Mainland dancers, aged 10-12, had practised their routine all summer – sometimes for six hours a day. For one parent, the work certainly paid off. “(The dancers) are so young so I’m not sure how they’re reacting to it…the parents are probably more

excited because they understand the amount of time that was spent,” said Marcos Hui, whose 10-year-old son Juno is on the Freshh 2.0 team.

“We’ve been celebrating…since we got back, we’ve been having house parties, we’ve just been going at it. We won’t stop until school starts.”

Hui said the team has been “a year in the making,” and first had to compete in Edmonton to qualify for the

world championships.

“It was very rigorous,” Hui said. “It was great to see these kids progress so quickly.”

For Hui, the competition was an exciting learning opportunity for his son.

“It was really cool because we’re doing it with all these different languages and different people who all came together to celebrate dance,” he said. “I think (Juno) grew as a child.”

Kim’s summer in the sand on Team BC Air Attack and Richmond Christian Eagles volleyball standout with provincial U18 program

Now it’s onto the high school season where Kim will have a leading roll with defending city champion Richmond Christian.

His outstanding play at setter resulted in Lower Mainland MVP honours and a Second Team All-Star selection at provincials as the Eagles capped one of their best seasons ever with a fifth place finish at the B.C. “AA” Championships.

It was a busy summer in the sand for Elijah Kim. Already a standout player on the floor, the soon-to-be Grade 12 student at Richmond Christian was a member of the U18 Team B.C. beach volleyball program.

Now with less depth, Kim will be counted on as one of the team’s top hitters.

Kim partnered up with Burnaby’s Ted Graveson and competed in a number of events — highlighted by a second place finish at the Seaside Tournament earlier this month on the Oregon Coast.

“I will be swinging this year as oppose to setting. We’re going to be a little short on hitters and probably won’t be as strong as last year but I’m just looking to have a lot of fun with this being my last year with the boys,” said Kim.

“It was a fun experience,” said Kim, of his trip down south. “We played some good volleyball, including beating another B.C. team in the quarter-finals. In the finals we lost to a really good team from California and they were great guys too.”

He intends on continuing his career at the post-secondary level and there already is plenty of interest including Capilano University where U18 Team B.C. beach volleyball coach Dave Dooley happens to be in charge. Kim will also be training this fall at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo and has been offered a roster spot at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick.

It was Kim’s first summer of competitive beach since teaming up with Martin Prinsloo to win the U14 Nationals back in 2015 in Parksville.

He and Graveson were winding down their U17 club season with Air Attack when they agreed to partner up for some local beach tournaments.

A couple of podium finishes were enough to convince them to enter the Team B.C. Selection Tournament where their strong play continued — placing in the top two.

break, I decided to get back into it and Ted is one of my best friends on Air Attack,” Kim explained. “Beach is so much more of a mental game.

First of all, you have to know your partner really well. But at this age, everyone is physically so strong and can hit so hard. It’s basically who

can outsmart their opponent. That’s what I really like about it.”

Kim and Graveson have already agreed to team up again next year.

Regardless of his final destination, Kim knows another summer on the beach will only enhance his indoor career.

“I think it really helps with my composure playing indoors,” Kim added. “Beach is such a game of patience.”

Sockeyes continue pre-season with Grandview at Minoru tonight

The Richmond Sockeyes continue their preseason schedule Thursday night when the Grandview Steelers visit Minoru Arenas at 7 p.m.

It will be the back half of a home-and-home

series that saw the Steelers skate to a 4-2 victory on Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club.

“I should have been more prepared. My son is 12 weeks old today. Bowling had taken a backseat. It was work and then getting home.

I just left it up to the powers to be this year and whatever came of it,” continued Reid.

For the second straight year Ryan Reid will be representing Canada against the top amateur bowlers in the world.

“I wouldn’t have been disappointed not winning because of what happened last year and all the changes in my life since but I still went there with the goal of winning.”

The Richmond resident and manager of Lucky 9 Lanes in Riverport is heading to Las Vegas in November for the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. The 54th annual event showcases the top amateur 10-pin bowlers with national champions from as many as 90 countries.

Reid broke through a year ago at the Canadian finals in Winnipeg to qualify for the prestigious event. This time he took advantage of his defending champion status to bypass regional and provincial qualifying and repeat last month in Edmonton.

He does admit it will be a more intense approach now leading up to his second World Cup appearance. He was 10th a year ago in Mexico and the goal is to be in the top eight.

Former Olympic coach joins 2018 FALL Pacific Wave synchro club FOOTBALL who are ready to represent B.C. at the national level and have the potential to represent Canada internationally as well.

Pacific Wave Synchronized Swimming Club has made a huge addition to its staff with former Canadian Olympic coach Meng Chen coming onboard for the upcoming 2018-19 season as assistant head coach.

Chen, who has been a Synchro Canada national team coach since 2008, took her career to the next level by leading Canada’s duet to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

IRELAND, Carilyne GRECZMIEL, Eugene Hugo May 23, 1929 - August 11, 2018 On August 11th, 2018, Gene Greczmiel passed away peacefully after living a long adventurous life. .

He was born in Richmond on May 23rd, 1929 where he lived with his sister Joan Plummer and his parents Gene and Maria Greczmiel. .

Following in his father’s footsteps, Gene started his own businesses. Understanding the value of patience, hard work and capitalizing on great opportunities, he was first a dairy farmer and then a home builder and land developer. He had an amazing eye for design and style and incorporated many details from his many travels to his designs while developing the Laurelwood, Maple Lane, Westwind and Terra Nova neighbourhoods. Gene took inspiration from everything around him, always striving for quality and looking for more. He was a true believer in learning from the best and asking questions. .

He was married for 24 years to Barbara and had two daughters Michele (Bruce) and Lisa (John) followed by his grandchildren, Carly (Steve), Ryan, Sydney (Roberto), Fraser (Stephanie), Spencer, Sophia and Asher. The highlights of his later years were his great grandchildren, Anastasis, Athena and Aeryn. He looked forward to visits with them and pictures of them were never far from him. .

Gene’s greatest passions were family, boating and travel and was fortunate enough to be able to spend many years enjoying all three. He was a true adventurer: hiking, biking, kayaking, rowing, camping, and walking. He walked for miles here and across many countries all over the world.

He was an incredible teacher and story teller. We are all truly thankful and feel extremely blessed to have had him in our lives for as long as we did.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom, in 1942, passed away peacefully, with her loving husband Garrett Ireland, her two sons, Colin Ireland and Seauin Ireland, by her side, on August 3, 2018, at 4:20pm Pacific Standard Time, at the Richmond General Hospital intensive care unit, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.

She is survived by her loving family, daughter Alison Moran; granddaughter, Ruby Moran; grandson, Liam Moran; Niece Deborah Bond and her husband Graham Bond; their two sons Nik and Matthew Bond. We thank them for their kind words and support, during this time.

We would also like to thank the medical staff and team, headed up by Dr. Wong, at Richmond General Hospital, ICU, for their incredible dedication to Carilyne’s care and comfort, for the 11 days she was under their guidance and protection. We are eternally grateful to them as a family, for all they did during her care and passing, in the final days of her life.

There will be no funeral service and we ask that our family’s privacy be respected at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carilyne’s memory to the Richmond Hospital Foundation appreciated. 7000 Westminster Hwy., Richmond, British Columbia, Canada (Tel: 604-244-5252).
