It’s show time, folks.

For the past few months, candidates have been honing their platforms, sharpening their attacks and galvanizing their volunteers, but now that Labour Day’s behind us, the kids are back at school and the weather’s blasted those lazy, hazy days of summer into a distant memory, it’s time to get serious about this municipal election.

Anyone who aims to take a seat at the head table in the council chambers, or on the board of education needs their paperwork into the city’s clerk’s office by Friday.

At this point, all the incumbents on city council, apart from Alexa Loo, have done that; we understand Loo is planning to do so Friday.

At the school board, the only incumbents who have actually put their names in are Debbie Tablotney and Alice S. Wong — but a lot can happen in 24 hours.

Incumbency is a big issue in civic elections, simply because incumbents tend to win. We, in the media, like to focus on the shiny new penny, but for most Richmond voters, it’s about name recognition. I’ve been here for four civic elections and only twice has an incumbent councillor not held their seat.

That doesn’t mean upsets never happen. Recall the 1990 election when the mayor and three of the four councillors who had voted in favour of rezoning the Terra Nova Lands from agricultural to residential lost their seats because of that decision. Granted, that was almost 30 years ago.

Still, Richmond continues to deal with some highly contentious issues: mega mansions, temporary modular housing and illegal hotels all had people packing the council chambers.

At the school board meeting where trustees implemented a SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) policy, the shouting drowned out speakers and police had to be called.

But whether any of that will change council is hard to say.

Regardless, elections are about more than determining who sits where. They’re also, hopefully, about civic engagement and allowing us all a chance to take some measure of responsibility for the reality we’re creating.

Bus bonus backfires Troopers, take a bow Dear Editor,

As many are aware, TransLink recently made some huge changes to the bus systems in Richmond. Their intentions were good, but they seem to have done more damage than good, and have upset a lot of commuters.

In a nutshell, the 410 bus route that went from Steveston to New Westminster via Railway Avenue, Granville Avenue, No. 3 Road, Cambie Road, and down the highway was split up into two routes: the 406 and the 410. This was an attempt to make the route more reliable with less delays. In reality, however, it has inconvenienced many commuters, and resulted in often longer waits than before due to the need to transfer busses.

The 410 is still just as unreliable as ever, so transferring doesn’t sync up nicely. For those who live on the new 406 route, the change has effectively added time to their commute, unless they are only bussing to Richmond centre.

Dear Editor, As a volunteer with St. Alban’s Outreach and Advocacy, I would like to send out a massive thank you to the individuals and companies of Richmond who give back to this community. I dare not name each one for fear of missing or offending anyone of you but please post this in your staff room, if this applies to you.

Deal with tunnel, already Dear Editor, A few years ago, while at 30-plus thousand feet, en-route from YVR to Heathrow Airport my seat neighbour, a charming, young European man, and I engaged in conversation. He was part of a team of engineers which had been contracted to evaluate the Massey Tunnel.

His couched evaluation of the device through which we, thousands of drivers, travel weekly, if not daily, was this: “If it were me, or one of my family members, I’d find an alternate route to get from one side of the river to the other, even if it meant driving further and for longer.”

Our governments have the data. They have a number of reports. What are our so-called representatives waiting for.....a major catastrophe? Represent us, as you were elected and are paid to do. Hesitation and procrastination are the hallmarks of the timid and weak.

Just do it.

Don’t be spun by election spin Dear Editor, As the circus that is election campaigning begins to rear its make-upcovered head here in Richmond, we can anticipate the usual deluge of vague and ambiguous rhetoric and promises, the presentation of carefully orchestrated “town-hall” or “all candidates” meetings, where incumbent and aspiring politicians are shielded from probing, meaningful questions, and where the candidate with the most money ‘wins’ the media and road-sign wars.

None of these strategies does anything to help us gain a better understanding of the values, beliefs, motivations, or priorities that undergird what the candidates’ intentions would be while in public office. If Donald Trump has offered anything positive to the world, it is an opportunity for us to awaken to how important it is to fully assess the backgrounds, inclinations and values of those who seek public office before we vote for them.

Birth right policy breeds behaviour Dear Editor,

For quite some time, the issue of automatic birthright citizenship has been a major topic of discussion in our community. Now, it has gone to the national level. Both of the major political parties of Canada — the Liberals and Conservatives — seem to be serious in tackling it.

This is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed without any further delay. Our politicians need to rise above politics and consider all of the ramifications of this loophole. Richmond is a typical example where a large number of foreigners are taking unfair advantage of this loophole.

Canada must ensure that in order to receive Canadian citizenship upon birth, at least one of the child’s parents must be either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. That seems only fair. It has nothing to do with the home country or the nationality of the mother/parents of the child.

According to some media reports, a large number of countries have either ended this practice or are making it conditional. Automatic birthright citizenship is wrong, plain and simple, and must be ended forthwith.

Women’s estate planning in the New York Times

A couple of weeks ago, after seeing the story in Forbes magazine, I wrote about the unique circumstances of women over the age of 50 when it comes to estate planning. This past Sunday, a headline in the New York Times read, “Over 50, and Facing Financial Fears.” It’s clear to me, then, that this issue must be an important one in the U.S., and should also be in Canada.

One of the women profiled, at age 55, had to take over her husband’s business after he died (age 58) at a New Years’ Eve party. She knew nothing about the business, or her late husband’s Will. A friend of hers, who ran a public-relations firm, disclosed several similar horror stories from women across the U.S.

Two Richmond schools are to get a $16 million seismic upgrade, starting next spring and summer.

Since September 2017, the Province has announced more than $350 million in funding to upgrade or replace high-risk schools, including a seismic upgrade for Richmond’s Hugh Boyd secondary.

Work will begin on the 63-year-old Tait elementary, near Bridgeport and No. 4 roads, next spring at a cost of $7.59 million.

In July, the school district told how it had identified 15 schools to seismically upgrade over the next five years, at a cost of $176 million.

Construction at 58-year-old Ferris elementary, at Gilbert and Blundell roads, will start next summer at a cost of $8.49 million.

Plans for four schools, including the aforementioned Ferris, Tomsett ($9.5 million), Mitchell ($9.7 million) and Manoah Steves ($11.3 million) have already been submitted to the ministry for final approval.

Premier John Horgan made the announcement Friday morning at Tait elementary, flanked by Rob Fleming, B.C.’s Minister of Education, and in front of an audience of Richmond school trustees, MLAs and city councillors.

Tait elementary is a one-storey school, which opened in 1955 as a two-room facility. It now has a capacity for 364 students. Ferris, also a one-storey school, has a 616 student capacity.

“When students, teachers and staff walk through the front doors of their school, they deserve to feel safe and secure,” said Horgan.

An assessment of both schools found they were are at high risk in the event of an earthquake and in urgent need of seismic upgrades.

The province has funded a Richmond Capital Project Team, dedicated to addressing the backlog of seismic projects in Richmond and fast-tracking upgrades like the ones at Tait and Ferris.

Two men attacked after Thieves tried to steal liquor dating app meet-ups Tantan dates led to assaults, abduction, robbery Hwang said this is the first time Richmond RCMP has received reports on attacks relating to dating app users.

Richmond RCMP responded to two incidents over the past weekend where users of the dating app, Tantan, were targeted.

“Police are warning the public to exercise caution whenever Tantan or other similar dating apps are used,” said Hwang.

According to the RCMP, the first incident occurred Saturday shortly after 7 a.m., when a 32-year old man from Richmond arranged a meeting at a residence in southwest Richmond with another user whom he believed to be woman using the name Stephanie.

“Unless trust is guaranteed, it is inherently dangerous to meet strangers in non-public areas.

“These two incidents in such close proximity are highly concerning to police,” he added.

Tantan is a dating app developed by a Chinese company and is widely available on Android and IOS smartphone platforms in English, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

“While the man was waiting, two suspects approached him and assaulted him. The victim managed to escape,” said the RCMP in a press release.

When the man arrived, he was allegedly approached by three suspects, one of whom produced a knife.

“The suspects then abducted the victim, transported him using the victim’s vehicle to a bank in the 3700 block of No. 3 Road and forced him to withdraw funds from an ATM machine,” according to the RCMP.

The ATM at Steveston Liquor Store on Third Avenue was the target of an unsuccessful theft in the early hours of Tuesday. It seems the thief, or thieves, wrapped a heavy chain around the ATM, but couldn’t shift it.

The second incident occurred the following day at around 3 a.m., when a 23-year-old man from Vancouver arranged to meet a Tantan user, also called Stephanie, at a residence in central Richmond.

Men thought they were meeting up in Richmond with a woman called Stephanie but, instead, were attacked by several men. Police believe each incident was a set-up.

Similar to Tinder, users can swipe right to like someone or swipe left to pass, and those who are interested in each other can start chatting.

The victim was then robbed and personal effects, including his clothing, were taken.

Anyone with information regarding either of these two cases is asked to contact Const. L. Reid of the Richmond RCMP General Investigation Service at 604-2781212.

He was later released by the suspects, according to the police.

It’s not clear what’s anchoring the ATM inside Steveston Liquor Store, but whatever it is, it’s too heavy for thieves.

At some point in the early hours of Tuesday, a thief or thieves broke into the Third Avenue premises, wrapped a heavy chain around the ATM and tried to yank it from its mooring.

Richmond RCMP were called to the scene of the break-in just before 6 a.m. The store is connected to the Buck & Ear pub; both are owned and operated by the Joseph Richard Group.

It’s not clear what the thieves were using to try and break the machine free from the floor, but they failed in their bid, as the photo shows.

According to Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang, the “suspect or suspects had fled the scene prior to police arrival.

“The investigation is on-going and we are reviewing all available evidence. The Integrated Forensics Identification Service (IFIS) is assisting us.”

Police across B.C. are ramping up distracted driving enforcement in September and community volunteers are conducting “Cell Watch” deployments to remind drivers to take a break from their phone when driving.

Mayor candidate faces allegations panel, Guo will face disciplinary action ranging between a reprimand, a fine, a suspension or disbarment, “depending on the circumstances,” according to Jordan.

Hong Guo, a Richmond real estate lawyer and mayoral candidate for October’s election, is being accused of professional misconduct by the Law Society of B.C. following the society’s review of how millions of dollars went missing from her company’s trust accounts.

Guo will face a hearing before a disciplinary panel, on a date yet to be determined, over accusations of breaching accounting rules, failure to supervise, improper delegation, misappropriation or improper withdrawal of funds, breach of undertaking to the Law Society and breach of a Law Society order.

The allegations “are unproven until a discipline hearing panel has determined their validity,” wrote a Sept. 4 citation on the Law Society’s website.

The Law Society told the Richmond News that all of the charges are related to the $7.5 million that went missing from Guo’s company’s trust fund in 2016, when Guo claimed two former employees, including her bookkeeper Jeff Li, stole the funds and transferred them to China.

“The Law Society is alleging, because of those accounting errors or misconduct, she (Guo) facilitated the disappearance of the money; she created an environment for her bookkeeper who allegedly stole the money,” said David Jordan, communications officer for the Law Society.

However, Guo told the News that the whole thing is a “theft matter”, that her two accounts were “in a mess after the theft happened” and that the “criminals” destroyed her records.

“I’m sure I made mistakes when all this (the missing funds) occurred. I have never experienced this before. I will take responsibility for them,” said Guo. “But I want to be clear — nobody says I took any money, ever, for my own use. I have made sure everyone who lost money has been fully repaid, out of my insurance and out of my own pocket.

“In a few months, I will have a chance to explain in a hearing what happened.”

The Law Society confirmed in March that the trust shortage was eliminated, but Guo is now facing more than 30 misconduct allegations, all of which took place between 2014 and 2016 and involved tens of millions of dollars.

Accusations include Guo’s repeated withdrawal of funds from her trust accounts when there were insufficient funds and her failure to report account shortages from January 2014 to March 2016.

The Law Society also alleges that Guo has breached an undertaking to the Law Society during the time when the Law Society took partial custodianship of Guo’s law firm after the funds went missing.

“Once the Law Society started investigating, they required Guo to do certain things but she allegedly did not do them,” said Jordan.

For example, the Law Society accused Guo of failing to immediately open a new trust account for new client matters. Guo, instead, deposited trust funds totalling more than $196 million into an old account.

Guo is also alleged to have withdrawn trust funds of more than $7.2 million through 30

After more than eight years of shouting from the sideline, a well-known community activist is bidding to burst onto Richmond’s political field at next month’s municipal election.

“My family is born and bred here, we live here, I’m doing this for future generations.”

Starchuk said, if elected, the first thing she’d tackle would, unsurprisingly, be the language used on business signs across the city.

Kerry Starchuk has been the grassroots force behind the push for mandatory English on business signs and, among other things, lobbied for clampdowns on birth tourism and short-term rentals in the city.

However, according to Starchuk, she has had enough of being disregarded by city council, many of whom, she said, have been in office for too long.

Now she wants to emulate the civic roles her great grandfather, William Bridge, once held as a former reeve (mayor) and school trustee.

“I’ve reached a point where I can’t go any further,” Starchuk told the Richmond News, just before dropping her election papers at city hall on Tuesday afternoon.

“If I can get on the inside, I can’t be dismissed (by city council) any more. I’ve been blatantly dismissed many times, especially on the signage issue.

“A lot of these people have been on council for a long time and I’ve thought I was voting

for the best person. But it usually ends up being a huge disappointment.”

Starchuk said she has no issue with city staff, who’ve been “very approachable and very helpful,” it’s the politicians that have “been very narrow-minded.

“I got the same treatment on the birth tourism and short-term rental issues. I keep getting told that (birthing home operators and illegal hotels) are not doing anything illegal.

But (council) are not doing everything they can to work with all levels of government to tackle these issues.”

Starchuk said there isn’t a day that goes by without a member of the public contacting her about the aforementioned issues.

“I do the best I can for them, but I need to get on the inside,” she added.

“I’ve been doing this for eight years now from the outside. I might be able to achieve more on the inside.”

Starchuk, who describes herself as a mortgage-free “full-time activist” with “a few cleaning jobs,” said she’s also tired of being told by councillors to “take the money and run” out of Richmond.

“Let’s get that sorted, once and for all. I would look to bring in a language bylaw for signs,” she said.

“As for short-term rentals, the city needs to get pro-active, rather than rely on complaints from the public to act. More resources need to be poured into it.

“I’m paying more taxes than ever, so where is all the money going? The Oval?”

To tackle the booming birth tourism industry in Richmond — whereby non-Canadians are understood to come specifically to gain citizenship for their newborn children — Starchuk admitted there are some “tough decisions that people will need to make.”

She has, over the last few years, enlisted the help of two Richmond MPs, the Conservative Party’s Alice Wong and the Liberal’s Joe Peschisolido to petition parliament to tackle birth tourism.

But that hasn’t stopped the former Richmond resident — who says he can’t afford to live here anymore — from throwing his

And referring to private parties to raise funds for election campaigns, Chen said that “big donations (are more than) a free dinner; big donations must result in big corruption.

“So, big donations being banned from politics is still my (focus).”

Despite leaving Richmond seven years ago, Chen claims he still has a lot of cultural connections in the city and knows what a lot of residents are thinking, given he was born in Beijing, China. “(Residents) have a language barrier; they need (to be able to communicate) with the mayor,” added Chen, who said the maximum mayoral term should be two terms or eight years.

“This way, we can keep our government moving forward.

Our government needs fresh blood, fresh air to guide our city forward.”

Chen went on to question Brodie’s “energy” in being able to continue for another four years.

As well, Chen’s platform priorities include: improving community neighbourhood safety; improving Richmond hospital’s service; improving Richmond’s road and traffic network; protecting Richmond’s environment; creating more jobs for young people and newcomers; having a transparent government.

Chen ran in the 2013 provincial election as a B.C. Conservative in the Richmond Centre riding, garnering 961 votes, or five per cent of the popular vote. However, last year leadership squabbles within the party led him to form a new party, dubbed the New Republican Party.

More candidates step up to plate The deadline to submit nomination papers for Richmond’s election is Friday, and three more independent candidates for council and two for mayor have stepped forward.

Running for mayor is long-time resident Don Flintoff, who has previously been vocal about housing affordability, property taxes, the Oval and the jet fuel pipeline.

Cliff Wei, a resident of 16 years who has run for mayor before, says he will “cover the issues of policing, traffic, hospital, school and other public services.”

In the race for council, Andy Chiang says he will focus on road safety and that his message for Richmondites is to “be kind, be patient and be good to one another.”

Theresa Head, also running for council, says she will focus on affordable housing, empty condos, shelters, outreach and improved transit. Zhe Zhang is also running for council, but could not be reached by deadline.

Trustee Alice. S. Wong announced on Monday she has registered for re-election as an independent candidate, and that she feels “guilty” about voting for SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) “by mistake” in June.

“I care a lot about children. Many new immigrants don’t know enough about the Canadian system and they need a trustee to communicate with them. By running for re-election, I can help them and serve society,” said Wong at a press conference on Monday.

Wong responded for the first time to her controversial June vote at a school board meeting in favour of SOGI, after nearly five hours of deliberation by people on both sides of the issue. Wong later told the Chinese newspaper Singtao Daily that she “raised her hand by mistake.”

“We had meetings since 4 p.m. on that day [till midnight] and I wasn’t feeling well. When the chair asked us to vote [in favour of SOGI or not], I thought we were asked to vote for the meeting to adjourn. So I raised my hand. I later realized, ‘oh no I made a mistake,’” Wong told the Richmond News.

Wong said she was “very unhappy” that the majority of the trustees voted to pass the SOGI policy at the time.

“It was just a discussion about the draft and there were more than 80 parents providing feedback. I understand that many parents hoped we could have more discussions about it. Why did we rush to pass the policy on that day instead of postponing it until September?” asked Wong.

Wong said school board policies can be reviewed one year after their passing. If parents or the public request a review of the SOGI policy next year, she thinks it should be “brought back to the table and decided on.”

When asked if she worries the mistaken vote will undermine people’s trust in her, Wong said, “yes, I feel very bad about it. I feel guilty.”

She said she would make a request at the school board meeting on Wednesday to change her vote on the SOGI policy at June’s meeting.

Also attending the press conference on Monday were two new independent trustee candidates, who, Wong said share the same campaign and fundraising team with her.

Ivan Pak, an IT consultant, and James Li, a travel agent, announced their bid for school trustee in July after “feeling disappointed” with the school board’s decision to pass SOGI. “The two sides of SOGI fought tit-for-tat at the [June] meeting. As a parent, it was very disheartening to see that. I think there should be better policies that don’t create so many social divisions like this one,” said Li. Li said if elected, he would seek the reversal of the SOGI

Where does campaign cash come from?

A Richmond News analysis of 2014 municipal election finance reports shows developers and businesses directly linked to the real estate industry accounted for more than onethird of all donations to would-be politicians.

Businesses, such as law firms and investment companies, farmland owners, unions and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (River Rock Casino and Resort) complete the list of other significant donors. Some political slates accepted large sums from candidates themselves.

Late last year new rules came into effect for provincial and municipal election donations. The BC NDP government put a cap of $1,200 per year on individual donations and banned corporate and union donations.

Nevertheless, Richmond politicians have had three full years to fundraise under the old rules, leading up to the Oct. 20 election. Donations for this election needn’t be reported until months after the election.

Including donations from businesses and individuals with a direct link to real estate and development, that the News is aware of, the sector accounted for just over $365,000 of the $971,120 spent on the 2014 election by all candidates. While many law and investment firms linked to real estate services

made significant donations, the News did not include them if they had diversified service portfolios.

The Richmond Community Coalition led the way in donations and spending ($311,357 total). It raised $138,900 (45 per cent) from the development industry. However the single largest donation came from ALW Investments Group Ltd. The company appears to have no online presence and was incorporated just months ahead of the election, in August, 2014, by sole director Wong Man Wa, according to B.C. Corporate Registries.

Rivaling ALW Investments was developer and real estate agentt Raman Kooner, who, via several of his companies and individual donations, donated $18,000 to Richmond First.

Richmond First accepted $215,529 in donations, $111,500 (54 per cent) of which originated from real estate and development, including candidate donations from developer Coun. Derek Dang and Coun.

Linda McPhail, whose family business is Farrell Estates Ltd. Other prominent donors included large farming operations, which accounted for $35,320 of donations to Richmond First, the Coalition and Mayor Malcolm Brodie combined. Meanwhile, unions contributed $34,225 total in Richmond (nearly all from CUPE or Richmond Firefighters Association) and River Rock owners Great Canadian donated $19,025 across the city.

After Richmond First and the Coalition, Brodie was the third single-largest fundraiser. His more diverse donation portfolio saw 35 per cent of donations come from development

and real estate.

Candidate donations were $17,360 for the Coalition and $19,725 for Richmond First.

The candidate who spent the most of their own money last election has now joined Richmond First as a council candidate for this year’s ballot. Developer Sunny Ho helped form the Reform Richmond slate last election and spent $20,000 from his company Westminster Development Ltd. He also spent $87,358 from of his business Kam Do Bakery. Ho garnered 6,926 votes (17th spot).

Title: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul Author: Jeff Kinney Reviewed by: Jaimie L. age 9 This book is about a guy named Greg who is going on a road trip and ends up in a motel. The next day he goes to a water

park and goes to a fair. He gets a pig, and the pig gets him in trouble. I like this book because it made me laugh a lot. I’ve read all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and I enJaimie joyed the ninth one the most. My favourite part is when Rodrick (Greg’s brother) microwaved the pizza. He thought it was a microwave but it was actually a safe. So by then the pizza was locked!

Good news is on the horizon for youth requiring care specific to their needs. Richmond will become home to a new youth hub called Foundry Richmond that will help to address gaps in care and transform access to health and social services for youth and families.

Set to open in Spring 2019, a new hub for adult and older adult care in the community will also become a “one-stop” shop, offering care needs assessments, care planning, specialty service consultations, and shortterm treatment for adults and older such as:

The need is urgent. Richmond’s youth population, age 13-24, totals 33,700. As in many other locations in B.C. and Canada, an alarming number of Richmond youth—over 40 percent—do not receive the primary medical care or the mental health and substance use services they need, frequently facing many barriers, including a confusing patchwork system with unintegrated services spread across many locations.

• Facilities to support people with chronic diseases, complex medical needs and mental health and substance use services.

Important planning work is under way right now for acute care patients, those receiving care in a hospital setting for serious health issues. This year on March 29, the Province announced it had approved the Concept Plan for a new Acute Care Tower for Richmond, and Vancouver Coastal Health Richmond leaders are now working on the Business Plan for a new Acute Care Tower at Richmond Hospital, one of our community’s greatest needs.

Foundry Richmond, when officially opened next year, will transform health and social services for youth and families. By bringing together primary care, mental health and substance use services in a “one-stop” shop, Foundry Richmond will support youth and their families with easy and faster access to care—all under one roof for the very first time.

• Home health services such as nursing, case management, occupational therapy and physical therapy as well as palliative care services

One of the early results of planning was the need to provide care for Richmond’s growing number of seniors, resulting in a new unit for Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) set to open in October 2018. Richmond has the fastest growing population of seniors in the province of B.C. with an average increase of 7 percent year over year resulting in 70 percent of in-patients being over the age of 70 at Richmond Hospital. The new ACE unit will include 32 to 35 beds at the hospital. A multidisciplinary care team will be composed of nurses, a nurse practitioner, a geriatrician, five general internal medicine physicians, a geriatric psychiatrist, as well as increased physiotherapist, occupational therapist, and social worker support.

Golfers mark $1.25M for charity with first hole-in-one Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

It was difficult to pinpoint the highlight of the 19th Annual Country Meadows Charity Golf Classic last Friday at the course on No. 6 Road.

It could easily have been the impressive $104,000 that the 170-strong Country Meadows Senior Men’s Golf Club has already raised this month for the B.C. Prostate Cancer Research Centre.

Or it could have been the first ever holein-one in the tournament’s history, netting the acer, Vinnie Nicola, a $10,000 prize from the hole sponsors, Aviva Insurance.

No matter which one was the talking point at the 19th hole, it’s undoubted that the event — which last week saw 28, fiveperson teams (each team had at least one woman) compete — continues to shine, with more than $1.25 million raised in its lifetime for prostate cancer research equipment.

“It was quite an occasion; we were hoping someone would win (the hole-in-one prize) one of these days,” said Lorne Carney, the club’s fundraising manager, of Nicola’s ace on the 165-yard first hole.

“Not known to us his foresome, (Nicola) decided to split the money if anyone won it.”

Most of the $1.25 million raised over the years – 15 of the 19 tournaments have supported prostate cancer research – has been in the “last seven or eight years,” added Carney, “that’s when we really

started to ramp it up.

“The money goes directly equipment at centre for research into prostate cancer, none of it goes to administration.”

Carney said they chose prostate cancer research as one of our members, Harold Mahood, sponsored a Dr. Marianne Sadar, now head of the B.C. Prostate Research Centre, through her education and it “led from there.”

“It made sense to support a cause which affected men,” said Carney.

The club actively fundraises all year, but focuses September on helping prostate cancer research.

It’s estimated 21,000 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, with 4,000 not seeing out the year.

Annual Terry Fox Toastmaster named Run goes Sunday as world 2nd VP Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

The annual Terry Fox Run goes this Sunday, Sept. 16 in Richmond at Garry Point Park.

Last year, around 400 participants and volunteers joined together to honour Canadian athlete and cancer research activist Terry Fox’s legacy at the annual run/walk in his name, with more than $18,000 was raised for cancer research.

Organizers will be aiming to beat that number this Sunday, when the event kicks off at 10 a.m., with a 9 a.m. registration.

This September marks the 38th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, with hundreds of thousands of people across Canada remembering Fox’s audacious effort to run coast to coast.

The longevity of the run and the cancer research legacy inspired by Fox is, according to organizers, “a remarkable

reflection of Canada’s respect for a man who gave us an indelible example of what it means to persevere.”

“I know it can be a busy time of year but there is no better feeling than to come together with family and friends, in your own community, for a great Canadian fall tradition that, quite simply, changes lives for the better,” said Terry Fox Foundation Executive Director Britt Andersen.

Since Terry ran his Marathon of Hope in 1980, Canadians have raised more than $750 million for cancer research.

This money is invested into projects with the greatest potential impact for patients.

One such project is called Terry Fox PROFYLE, which focuses on hard to treat cancers for youth.

This project, and others like it, use the principles of precision medicine and big data in a collaborative Pan-Canadian approach in an effort to give kids with hard to treat cancers another change.

A Richmond-based Toastmaster has been elected second vice-president of the international branch of the public speaking organization.

Margaret Page, a member of Spotlight Speakers — one of about 20 Toastmaster clubs in Richmond — was named second VP after a campaign speech at the Toastmasters International annual conference in Chicago last month.

Page, a Delta resident, was elected to the one-year term at the organization’s 87th Annual International Convention, after being up against four other candidates from around the world.

And, in four years, she will become the international president; only a handful of women have held that honour and responsibility since 1930.

Richmond Fire-Rescue has seen a marked reduction in the number of fires caused by dropped cigarettes this summer compared to last summer, but they say the number is still too high.

At a media tour of the new Brighouse Fire Hall #1 on Thursday, community relations officer Brian MacLeod said that when the fire department started “The World Is Not Your Ashtray” campaign last summer, they were seeing an average of nearly three calls per day due to cigaretterelated fires.

This summer, that number has dropped to 1.5 calls per day.

MacLeod said it’s still too many calls about preventable fires, but is glad to see the reduction.

“We want to thank the public for their help and support, and we want to make sure that they continue spreading the word,” he said.

One of the reasons behind the reduction could be due to extra effort by Vancouver International Airport. Typically, Richmond Fire-Rescue sees many calls about cigarettecaused fires there.

“With an international airport, you’ve got people coming from countries that smoke much more,” MacLeod said.

“When you get off a seven to 10 hour flight, the first thing you want to do is light up.”

But the problem is those discarded butts end up in bark mulch around the airport, starting fires.

But this year, YVR has “really stepped up,” MacLeod said, adding more signage and turning their sprinklers on more

often.

Another issue is that people landing at the airport often bring in cigarettes from abroad, which aren’t fire safe.

Canada was the first country to adopt fire safe cigarette rules, MacLeod said. That means cigarettes here are made with rings of thicker paper that act as speed bumps as they burn. If a person isn’t actively inhaling, the cigarette will go out when the flame hits that ring.

That’s not the case, though, with cigarettes from around the world.

“Once you light it, it burns through its whole capacity right through to the filter sponge,” he said. “It’s a longer and hotter burning period.”

Addressing conflict in youth sport because once something gets worked out, it usually stays resolved.

The key, though, is learning how to move through those tricky situations. It’s a skill that not many adults have, Kyba says.

n the clubhouse of a Steveston townhouse complex, 14 and 15-year-old girls beginning their season on an elite Richmond soccer team gather in a circle for a workshop on conflict resolution.

She recommends talking it out in person or over the phone whenever possible, since nonverbal cues like body language and tone of voice can help with communication.

She also hands the girls cards printed with a script for having a tough conversation. It starts by framing the problem using “I” statements to describe how you’re feeling rather than labelling the other person a bully.

They start by writing their goals for the season on Post-it notes. Most of the hot pink and highlighter yellow notes have “work hard” and “respect” written on them. One says “resolve your problems maturely.”

That’s a skill that facilitator Nadia Kyba hopes to show them. Signing kids up for sports comes with a host health benefits, but Kyba is focusing on one potential mental health hazard: when conflict among players interferes with kids’ enjoyment of the sport.

When Kyba was growing up, she remembers her team being her second family. That left her with high expectations of how her daughters would be treated when they started playing competitive sports. But she was surprised.

“I noticed that there was so much conflict in sport. Especially in youth sport. I was kind of like, wow,” she told the Richmond News.

“I saw these admins and coaches, all volunteers, spending their time putting out fires, trying to manage different issues with athletes and parents … all their attention for the season goes to conflict rather than the team.”

After 21 years of working with families facing contentious issues, such as custody after divorce or placing children in government care, Kyba left her job at B.C.’s Ministry of Children and Family Development to start her own business, Now What Facilitation, offering workshops on conflict resolution aimed at sports teams.

She says things like bullying, gossip and unmanaged conflict can make the team dynamic so bad that young people may quit their sports — which is the worst-case scenario, according to Kyba.

“If there’s conflict that’s not resolved and there’s a lot of drama, it’s easier for them to walk out,” she said. “What I see is a lot of athletes, as they get a bit older, they’re leaving sports. The retention is not there.”

“It’s ‘I saw you roll your eyes’ or ‘I saw you look away while I was speaking’,” Kyba said.

Then, she advises players to ask the other person if they can change their behaviour.

Girls on the soccer team say they’ve seen that. Yasmin Zadunaisky, 15, joined the Richmond team after three years playing in Vancouver. A few practices in, she’s already enjoying it, but she has friends who haven’t been as lucky with their sports teams.

“A lot of people quit because they don’t feel friendly with their team and they don’t feel comfortable when they go to practices and games,” she said.

Several of the Richmond soccer girls said jealousy over playing time or not being passed the ball can lead to issues. A couple recounted miscommunications when a player interpreted not being passed the ball as personal dislike from another teammate.

Another issue girls mentioned was gossip — how players may vent to others about a teammate instead of bringing it up with the player herself.

“I feel like … we should just be respectful of each other and how others play, and help them out instead of talking badly about them,” Zadunaisky said.

She wants to prevent situations where players are humiliated or excluded. And she reminds the girls in her workshop that working through conflict effectively can actually help a team in the long run.

Many teams prioritize team-building, Kyba said. But too often, that only looks like going to dinner after a game. She thinks workshops like this at the beginning of the season can give teams a solid set of tools so they can deal with issues as they arise.

“I think that these are skills that don’t come naturally. They’re not taught in school,” Kyba said. “They also come with an awareness that conflict is natural. It occurs everywhere, but people shy away from it. But if you have skills to manage it, it becomes normal.”

IKEA opened on Monday morning its new, 330,540-square-foot Vancouver Customer Distribution Centre in rural south-east Richmond.

Situated at 7031 York Road, near to No. 8 and Blundell roads, the facility is a first for IKEA in Western Canada.

The Swedish company said the opening will “further enable IKEA to have its products in the right place, closer to its customers, while also providing increased capacity for future growth.”

The move, according to Marsha Smith, IKEA Canada president, is an “important step as IKEA Canada continues its transformation journey to become the leading multichannel home furnishings retailer.

“By optimizing our distribution networks, we ensure IKEA is fit for long-term growth, delivering a more enjoyable and convenient shopping experience for our customers in Western Canada, both today and in the future.”

The centre will supply IKEA Canada’s Richmond, Coquitlam, Calgary and Edmonton stores, its Collection Points in Nanaimo, Victoria and

Kelowna, home deliveries throughout B.C. and Alberta, as well as more than half of home deliveries in the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Markets served by the new centre, said IKEA, will see “significantly shorter delivery lead times.”

The new centre is home to approximately 100 new workers, in a variety of functions including logistics, human resources, safety and security and operations.

The new location is IKEA’s third customer distribution centre in Canada.

The retailer also operates facilities in the Montreal and Toronto areas.

Ten more of Richmond’s outstanding individuals in the world of sport will be inducted to the city’s Sports Wall of Fame later this month.

The 2018 induction class includes the likes of: Ian Anderson, a long-time boys high school football coach; Les Hamaguchi, 39 years of coaching high school girls basketball and winning two provincial championships; Moseley Jack, 40 years and counting of coaching with Kajaks Track & Field Club and Doug Staveley, a long-time boys high school football and basketball coach.

While the special achievement inductee will be Dr. Jack Taunton, who has, for 40 years, practiced sport medicine and volunteered.

Fast recovery for Connaught skater Michah Lynette rebounds from ankle injury in time for this week’s ISU Grand Prix the focus this week will be on his performance rather than the result.

Lynette is coming off a terrific 2017-18 season that saw him finish 23rd at his first-ever World Junior Championship and defend his Thailand senior men’s national title.

It’s Stepping on the ice for Thursday’s mens short program at the ISU Junior Grand Prix at Minoru Arenas will be an accomplishment in itself for Michah Lynette.

The Bellingham resident skate’s for his mother’s country origin which has opened the door for the international stage rather than qualifying through the extremely competitive US Sectionals.

Up until about four weeks ago, there was no certainty the 17-yearold was going to be able to be part of an international competition taking place in his very own training venue.

The long-term goal is representing Thailand at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. He was intending to skate in China for the first time when he had the chance to pick his Grand Prix schedule. However, China pulled out and the event was picked up

by Skate Canada with Connaught promoting the Richmond bid.

The Connaught Skating Club member and two-time Thailand senior men’s national champion suffered a bad ankle sprain back in June. Lynette could not even stand or walk, never mind skate. The initial diagnosis was no skating for six weeks — essentially wiping out a crucial stretch of summer training, leading up to the Grand Prix.

“I told him him that wasn’t going to work,” smiled Lynette. “The response was it was really going to depend on how well I could strengthen it.”

Lynette cut the recovering time in half and subsequent training has been a very slow and deliberate pace.

event. Couple of months ago, I didn’t know if it would be possible,” admitted his coach Keegan Murphy. “Training has been very low quantity. Instead of working on something 15 times, it’s been

five. But it’s forcing himself to do it right when he needs to, rather than over and over again. That’s actually been a really good thing.

The key has been being smart and diligent.”

The Grade 12 student says he has gone through three weeks of the hardest training he has ever done to reach this point. He suggests his ankle is somewhere between “85 and 90 percent” and

The rest of his coming season schedule will include the ISU Four Continents Championships in Anaheim next February and the 2019 Junior Worlds in Croatia.

A golden summer for Ian Ryder has him ready to move on to the next chapter of his promising judo career even before his high school graduation.

Ranked No. 4 in the world at the U18 level in his 90-kilogram weight class, the Steveston Judo Club member is heading to Montreal in January to work out on a full-time basis at Judo Canada’s National Training Centre.

The move comes after Ryder won gold in the U18 and U21 Divisions at the Canada Cup back in July then added a gold (U18) and bronze (U21) at the Pan American Games in Argentina.

The Grade 12 student at McMath Secondary was originally planning to head east next summer once his school year was completed. However, he has accelerated his studies through the Vancouver School Board’s online correspondence and is on schedule for an early departure. Now, Ryder isn’t far from joining his former provincial teammate Mitchell Wolfe who already left for Montreal.

“It started off with him saying I should come early with him. I didn’t think it would actually be a reality until I started looking at my courses to seriously see if it can be done,” explained Ryder. “I actually have enough credits to graduate now but I’m still taking the courses I want to get into university. Everything has worked out nicely.”

The 17-year-old will share an apartment with Wolfe and another national team member. It will then be training six days a week, up to two or three times daily. It’s exactly the environment he needs as he moves full-time into the U21 level and potentially represent Canada at next year’s World Junior Championships. The plan is to also study part-time at

Concordia University, starting in September 2019.

“My Judo B.C. coach talked to the friends he knows at the national training center and they are quite happy I am coming early. It’s going to be a better training environment and hopefully I can improve quite a bit,” continued Ryder. “I am going to get a lot of different training partners where there is just not that many my size here.”

Ryder is pleased to have closed out the U18 level of his career on a high note and is looking forward to the challenge of competing full-time at U21 where he has already gained plenty of experience over the past couple of years.

His U18 win in Argentina saw him defeat strong opponents from Cuba and Brazil. He then rebounded from an opening round loss with victories over competitors from Argentina and the U.S. to earn bronze at U21.

“I was training pretty hard leading up to Montreal and Argentina so it was nice to see those results,” he said. “You have to kind of start training hard leading up to it but not peak too early where you can come down a bit by the competition.

“That comes from a lot of experience once you have been to enough tournaments that you figure out what is best for you. Also, when you have a coach who has been working with you for a while, it really helps because they start to understand what works best for you to maximize your performance.”

Ryder will continue to train with Team B.C. throughout the fall and also his regular club sessions at the Steveston Martial Arts Centre where he has spent a big part of his life.

“It’s kind of sad leaving everything but I know it going to be a good beginning in Montreal with high intensity training and being with my friends again. But it’s also important to know where you came from.”

OBITUARIES NOBLE, George It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of an amazing father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, brother, and friend on September 7, 2018, at the age of 88. Beloved father of Larry (Jane), Wayne (Sheila), and Garth (Robin); adored grandfather of Nicolas and Jake, Jennifer (Corey), Susan (Keith), and George, Richard, Michael (Brittany) and Jessica (Chris); treasured greatgrandfather to Alyssa and Landon, Cody and Cameron, Ethan, and Sydney; dearest brother to predeceased siblings and to surviving siblings; devoted father-in-law to Dave Girling and a cherished relative and friend to many more.

George is now reunited with his precious wife Doris Esther who predeceased him in 2015, and his loving daughter Corrina Irene, who predeceased him in 2010.

Our hearts are heavy. However as we celebrate the adventurous life of George we are blessed to know that George, Doris and Corrina are together again and are watching us all from Heaven above.

A celebration of George’s life will be held in the near future. If you wish to honour George, a donation to the Delta Air Park (George’s playground) would be very much appreciated.

Alfred passed away very peacefully on September 4th, 2018 in Richmond. He had family at his bedside including the love of his life, Marlene. His loss will be felt by a great many people most intensely, of course, by his family. He leaves behind his loving wife Marlene; sons Don (Trudy), Brad (Sandy) & David (Kathy); daughter Brenda (Bill); Grandchildren Jennifer, Scott, Daniel, Derek, Grant, Nicole, Kyle, Gage, Connor; Great-Grandchildren Damian, Anthony; Brothers Bill (Sherrel), Gordon (Sue) and sister Peggy. Also feeling this loss are his many friends and past co-workers. Dad was pre-deceased by his brother Chuck and Chuck’s wife, Rose.

Dad was born in Edmonton, Alberta on July 6th, 1930 to William and Margaret Wallis. He was the 2nd eldest of 5 children. The Family moved to Richmond in 1944. It was here that he met and instantly fell in love with Marlene. They were married on September 22nd, 1956 and shared almost 62 years together. Within the 1st year of marriage, they started a family and shortly thereafter, moved into the home which they built for themselves, that Mom still lives in to this day.

July 6, 1930 - September 4, 2018

During Dad’s working life, he was known as an honest, hardworking, well respected Property Appraiser and Senior Supervisor for the BC Assessment Authority to whom he dedicated 35 years of his life. He was a soft spoken man with a great sense of humor. He would consider his words well and when he had something to say, it was always worth hearing and quite often very funny. He was also a very kind and patient man who was always quick to lend a hand or a word of advice to those in need. He was a true gentleman.

Dad was also a life-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church and considered the many Church activities to be amongst the highlights of each and every year.

Above all else, Dad loved Mom with a love that made them and those around them absolutely glow. That glow was radiating between them until the very last moments of Dad’s earthly life. All who have known and loved him will miss him forever but also know that he is now resting comfortably in Heaven.

COMING EVENTS

Madeleine passed peacefully in her sleep September 3, 2018. She is survived by her brother Paul, several nieces and nephews and her long time best friend, Vera.

Madeleine was well remembered for being a teacher/librarian in the Richmond School District as well as being an enthusiastic participant in the Gulf of Georgia Museum Society. She participated in the student exchange program with Richmond’s sister city in Wakayama, Japan. Madeleine loved the outdoors and was an avid hiker with the North Shore Hikers. When the AIDS crisis came to Vancouver, she volunteered weekly at St. Paul’s Hospital to offer comfort to the terminally ill patients. She also enjoyed travelling to England, France, Greece, and several trips to the Caribbean to attend yoga camps.

A Funeral Liturgy Service will be held on September 26, 2018 1:00pm at St. Joseph The Worker Parish, 4551 Williams Rd. Richmond. Tea and refreshments to follow.
