No news is good news, as the saying goes.

Well, I beg to differ. In my business, no news is a disaster.

That doesn’t mean I rub my hands together with glee every time calamity befalls in our city. Not at all. What it does mean is that I value all the things local news does — build connections, hold people to account, celebrate, inform and, perhaps most importantly, provide a venue where we, as a community, can hear and be heard.

This week’s editions of the Richmond News has a touching story about a mom weeping with joy as she watches her autistic sons surf for the first time; there’s a story about a council candidate breaking from the ranks in his support for marijuana dispensaries; there’s a disturbing court story about a teenage boy groomed for sexual exploitation; there’s a story about a company that went bankrupt and may have leaked thousands of Richmond customers’ credit card info; and yet another about a tour through Steveston history, a young mom auditioning for MasterChef and then there are the letters.

The point being, we’re all over the map, but that’s local journalism for you. Just like the community we aim to reflect, it illustrates the complexity of who we are.

I’m going on about this right now because next week marks National Newspaper Week. The theme this year is Newspapers Matter #NowMoreThanEver. The campaign hopes to remind Canadians about the important role newspapers play in our society today — self-serving, perhaps, but not totally out of line.

These are interesting times in the newspaper industry. With a president of the most powerful nation describing mainstream media as the “enemy of the people,” quality journalism really has never been so important. But hot-headed leaders aside, the greatest threat to newspapers in the long term is, you guessed it, the Internet, and all it has brought in it’s wake. Granted, the World Wide Web is amazing, and here at the Richmond News, we couldn’t imagine doing our jobs without it. But it’s had an impact on newspapers financially and on readers in how they see the world.

One of the wonders of the Internet is that it allows likeminded souls from around the planet to connect and communicate — a beautiful thing, indeed. But we are also physical creatures and there is something about connecting to place that matters.

I think of it a bit like neighbours versus friends. Obviously friends are essential, people with whom we share interest, values, a laugh and a glass of wine. But neighbours matter, too. And it’s the very fact we may not have anything in common with them, apart from location, that can expose us to something new. A favourite neighbour of mine was a Muslim woman from Morocco. Our conversation one day about her decision whether or not to terminate her unwanted pregnancy, despite her devotion to Allah, was one I’ll never forget.

In a world of filter bubbles and echo chambers, local news goes a long way in connecting people and engaging citizens with the very real issues that surround them. With an election coming up, it’s something we need #NowMoreThanEver.

Dear Constituents, As we begin another busy legislative session I wanted to take this opportunity to update Richmond-Queensborough residents on the many issues to be discussed in Victoria this fall.

With many analysts predicting an economic slowdown, there is growing concern about how the government is managing our economy. Already the NDP has announced they will increase or introduce 18 separate taxes, including the speculation tax. The NDP spec tax is framed as addressing affordability, but it’s just generating revenue at the expense of homeowners. Despite initial comments that the tax would not affect British Columbians, we now know that two-thirds of those paying the tax live in B.C. One of the other main issues we will question the NDP on this fall is the Union Benefit Agreements, which will restrict contracts to unionized companies and force workers to join only the unions that have donated to the NDP. This excludes 85% of construction & trades workers and severely infringes on their freedom to work. These agreements are a blatant payback to the NDP’s union buddies who have bankrolled the NDP with millions of dollars for years.

On Oct. 17, cannabis is legalized with the age of consumption set at 19. Retail sales will occur through public and private stores, however retail licenses won’t be approved without the support of local governments. Rest assured the opposition will keep a close eye on the implementation of this file, as we want to make sure community values, health, and safety remain our guiding principles.

Recently on Global News, I highlighted residents’ frustration with the inaction surrounding the Massey Tunnel replacement. With piles of sand spanning over 6 kilometers beside Highway 99, I decided to play golf on the NDP sand-trap for Global News cameras. The sand was moved in initial steps to replace the Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge. The bridge project has been cancelled by the NDP government. Transportation Minister Claire Trevena is still reviewing a $350,000 consultant’s report on moving forward. The unnecessary report comes after 5 years and 14,000 pages of consultation already done by the former BC Liberal government.

It breaks my heart to hear people use Christianity as an excuse for bigotry against our children – our LGBTQ children. As a Christian and as a pastor I want to tell you that the majority of Canadian Christians believe that LGBTQ children are made and loved by God. It is said that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who believe there are only two kinds of people in the world, and those who believe God is way more creative than that.

Why is this not surprising that the turf fields at Hugh Boyd Park and Minoru Park are worn out.

These fields are no longer the pet projects of the city, as our councillors now have way too much casino money to throw at the Oval.

Check out the condition of other facilities under Richmond’s care. Minoru Arenas needs upkeep, as does the Richmond Ice Centre in east Richmond. The Ice Centre has washrooms that lack hot water, the change rooms and showers are disgusting and a small staff that does its best to make sure the ice surface is cleaned.

Night-time staff is thin at best, having to perform the roles of janitor, building security, ice men and whatever else is thrown their way. If a problem arises with the ice plant, no one may be available to evactuate the building, much less themselves.

It breaks my heart that people take from the Bible only the passages that support bigotry rather than ones that support love. There are, of course, passages that are not supportive of same sex relationships. There are four. But there are also passages that condemn men for wearing cotton and polyester shirts, that would ban marriage between people of different tribes and race. Women cut their hair and men shave their beards – all things that the bible tells us are “abominations.” The Bible has ex-

Some folks have Developers spread the double standards gold around city hall Dear Editor,

The recent article in the Richmond News highlighting the extent of campaign contributions to various parties during the 2014 municipal election by developers and business directly linked to the real estate industry is interesting, but not surprising.

Dear Editor, There appears to be a double standard when it comes to our subjective views of big houses: one standard for wealthy white folk and one for the rest of us.

When a Michael Buble, or in bygone eras an industrialist, builds a very large abode, it’s called a mansion and the neighbours are in awe of it’s grandeur and “wonderful” charm. Many of these architectural showpieces become designated as heritage sites for tourists…think Hearst Castle.

However, when anyone else (non-white) constructs a “multi family” dwelling, it’s disparagingly referred to as a monster house and the neighbours are aghast at the person who would dare create such an eyesore in their community.

It’s kind of ironic since it was the western overlords who initially built these grand edifices as symbols of wealth, authority and dominance over the subservient masses in the colonies.

Over the generations, as some of these people attained financial independence, they, in turn, learned to display their newfound status in the same way.

So, the next time a “new Canadian” builds a monster house in your neighbourhood, look at it with a sense of pride.

After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

According to disclosure statements posted on Elections B.C., the value of campaign contributions from all sources for Mayor Malcolm Brodie was $265,227 (what makes this staggering sum even more obscene is that Brodie is currently carrying a surplus of $190,417 from the last election), for the Richmond Community Coalition it was $192,613 and for Richmond First it was $215,529 for a total of $673,369 (more than $3 for Richmond resident).

Based on the data, the total contributions by developers and their partners was $343,229, more than 50 per cent of all donations.

Due to the opaque nature in which donators are identified, even this percentage is probably low.

Assuming that, in the three years prior to the implementation of reforms to election donations, the Brodie fundraising machine was as efficient as it was prior to the last elections, he probably has a nest egg of more than

Of course the recipients of all this largesse will claim that the money does not influence the way they vote and the developers will say they are not buying influence but are only supporting good governance. (This is one of the three pillars developers use to defend the status quo, the second is ‘property prices are not influenced by foreign money’, the third is their default position used to attack anyone who does not agree with the nature or pace of development claiming they are xenophobic racists).

It would be naïve to the extreme to believe either the politicians or the developers when they claim that the level of donations by the developers and their partners does not influence decision making in Richmond.

I’m more inclined to believe in the (non-biblical) Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules. The developers have plenty of gold and have no issue with spreading it around (and politicians have no problem taking it) if it helps them get what they want.

The man found dead in a vacant home in Richmond last Thursday has been named by police.

“IHIT is releasing Mr. Thompson’s name to garner information from the community regarding his activities leading up to his death.”

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said the body was that of Michael Thompson, 37, of Richmond. IHIT say Thompson was known to police.

The Richmond News reported last week how police were on scene in the north of the city after a body was found inside a vacant home awaiting demolition.

Officers responded just after 8:30 a.m. to a house in the 9000 block of Odlin Road, near Garden City Road, after a friend of the victim found him dead.

After a preliminary survey by officers “they determined that something wasn’t right,” Jang said the day Thompson was found.

A neighbour, who didn’t want his name used, told the News he used to live in the home where the body was found.

But he and his housemates were evicted when a development company bought that house and others on the block and said it was ready to demolish them for

redevelopment.

The neighbour found another rental only a few doors down, but said the houses have been sitting empty for nearly a year and he has seen squatters and looters there before.

“There needs to be regulation regarding houses and how long they’re allowed to sit [empty] during rezoning and whether or not it’s mandated that they have security on site,” he said.

He’s calling on the city to address the problem, saying it’s a safety issue.

NCIX, a defunct Richmond-based hardware and software retailer, is accused of compromising the security of hundreds of thousands of former employees and customers.

Richmond RCMP opened an investigation last Thursday.

“Yesterday afternoon we opened an investigation into data storage devices being sold online allegedly containing customer data from a defunct, but well-known computer retailer. We have since recovered the storage devices,” according Richmond RCMP. Dennis Hwang, spokesperson for Richmond RCMP, told the Richmond News the data storage devices are “believed to have come originated from their (NCIX) bankruptcy auction.”

NCIX filed for bankruptcy late last year, closing more than a dozen stores across Canada after two decades of operations, and had two auctions to sell its remaining assets.

According to an article posted Tuesday by PrivacyFly, identified as a boutique cyber security firm in Vancouver, NCIX sold its database servers without wiping the data. As a result, the personal data of customers and former employees are now being sold online.

Author Travis Doering wrote that he saw an ad titled, “NCIX Database Servers — $1500 (RichmondBC)” on Craigslist in August and the seller, called Jeff, said he possesses NCIX’s “entire server farm” including the data, which had not been erased.

“I further learned that he still possessed around 300 desktop computers from NCIX’s corporate offices and retails stores” and servers that NCIX had used to back up their hard disks, wrote Doering.

He also discovered customer service inquiries including messages and contact information and confidential data, including credentials, invoices, photographs of customers’ ID, bills, and a former employee’s T4.

“In addition, there were also the 109 hard drives, which had been removed from servers before the auction and one large pallet of 400-500 used hard drives from various manufacturers.”

“By this point I couldn’t believe my eyes, the data I had seen today contained some of the most damaging and extensive records I had ever come across covering at least 17 years of business transactions,” wrote Doering.

“The data can easily be used to cash out credit cards, craft convincing phishing messages containing details on purchases and to commit identity theft.”

Stored furniture plagued by rats extermination schedules multiple times, without success.

Fed up with the response from U-Haul, corporate and locally, the Raffas went to the B.C. branch of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

A couple who used to vacation in Richmond have a cautionary tale to tell, after spending more than $30,000 to store furniture.

However, two notices of complaint were sent by the BBB to the business, neither of which were replied to.

Christie and Peter Raaffa sold their Richmond condo in 2005 and moved all their furniture — including a dining table and chairs, a couch and bed — into U-Haul Moving and Storage on Shell Road, close to Highway 99.

As far as they were aware, their belongings were safe, tightly sealed in their unit, which cost $577 rent every three months.

But 13 years, and more than $30,000 later, the Raffas, who live in Seattle, were shocked in the spring when they came up north to give the furniture to a friend.

“We saw dead rodents on the floor and there were faeces and urine all over the dining furniture,” said Christie.

“Yet everything was in a box or sealed. The rats had gotten into the mattress as well. Everything was ruined.

“We told the manager but we were told it would be dealt with by U-Haul corporate in Toronto.

“When we called there, they asked us straight away, do we have SafeStor protec-

Christie claimed they subsequently found out there was a rat problem about two and a half years ago at the site, but were never told about it.

“Looking back, we maybe should have checked the unit at some point, but we assumed everything was safe,” she added.

“But we absolutely left no food or anything that would attract rodents.”

Responding to complaints, added a spokesperson for the BBB, is “one of the most important factors when improving your BBB rating.”

As for the Raffas, they are writing off their losses. “We live four hours away, so we trusted them with our stuff due to statements they make on the local website about ‘temperature controlled, safe and locked environment with cameras, extermination done regularly, protection from elements, history of excellent customer service,’” said Christie.

“Our advice would be to read the contract and ask about their extermination policy and procedures before you sign.”

U-Haul Moving and Storage in Richmond didn’t reply to News’ requests for comment.

However, a spokesperson for the company’s corporate head office in Phoenix, AZ claimed the Raffas’ locker had wicker baskets in it with remnants of food in them, something that

the couple strongly refute.

“Food is not allowed to be stored in our lockers as this can and does attract vermin,” said the spokesperson.

“The customer had movers bring her belongings to the facility many years ago, and perhaps did not know there was food in her locker. Belongings in the locker were disposed of at the customer’s request. U-Haul reimbursed the customer two months of rent...as a gesture of goodwill...though U-Haul was not at fault.”

The spokesperson further claimed this incident was the first sign of vermin in the Richmond facility’s history, which U-Haul has operated since 2000.

“In addition to the customer in question, two additional lockers were found to have food in them – those customers have been evicted. To safeguard our store, new traps were set, and continue to be set, and additional measures continue to be taken, including the re-sealing of all doors and possible entrances where vermin could find a way in.”

U-Haul, he said, “urges customers to insure the belongings that they choose to store, whether it be through our affordable SafeStor policy or their own insurance provider.

“We take every precaution to provide a clean, dry and secure facility. However, UHaul is not responsible for damage to belongings that are being stored.”

A former church and children’s charity volunteer is facing up to two years in prison for grooming a young teenage boy for sex.

Bernard Michael Macht pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the boy between Jan. 1, 2017 and Feb. 1, 2018, in Richmond by inviting the child into sexual contact with him on numerous occasions.

Macht, who was 54 at the time of the offence, preyed on the boy for about a year after befriending his family two years ago through a community organization.

Richmond Provincial Court heard last week how married father-of-two Macht inserted himself into the boy’s life by picking him up from school, taking him swimming and on road trips.

Macht, who was fired as a Catholic school teacher in 1996 for showing inappropriate material to children, even arranged for the

“(Macht) became more and more explicit in his language and his requests to perform sex acts on the boy. The boy repeatedly refused the requests,” said Peacock.

All the time, the teenager and his mom thought Macht, who provided the family with cellphones, just wanted to help them out and even described him as a “confidant” and “general nice guy.”

The boy’s mother sobbed in court as she listened to the abuse of her son being detailed.

But it was behind closed doors and when he was alone with the boy that Macht’s true intentions became apparent.

Crown counsel Michelle Peacock told the court how the young teen considered Macht, now a software sales director, a “father-figure” in his life.

But, according to the Crown, in all the time Macht knew the boy and his family, he didn’t once introduce the child to his wife, telling the kid that they needed “to keep our relationship secret.”

“Mr. Macht told the boy he was sexually attracted to him,” Peacock told the court about one encounter in Macht’s car.

“At that moment, he told the boy he could leave the car if he was uncomfortable, but the

On other occasions, Macht “made lewd comments about masturbation, pornography and erections and told (the boy) masturbation was good for him,” added Peacock.

“He told the boy that he used to help his friends masturbate when he was young.”

While at the pool, Macht got undressed in front of the boy and complimented him on his physique, suggesting he undress also.

According to Peacock, Macht repeatedly offered to buy the kid Speedos (tight swimming costume) and also suggested going skinnydipping. Each and every time, however, the teenager refused Macht’s suggestions.

On one night at Macht’s house, the court heard how the boy was staying over and Macht came to his bed naked and told a story about how his uncle sexually abused him as a child while in the shower.

Describing the incident to the boy, Macht suggested they go to the shower, also. Again,

In January, 2018, the court heard how the boy sent a text to his mom from his bedroom, saying he had something to tell her. The next morning, he and his mom went to the police.

He told the police that he had conflicting feelings as his family depended on Macht and “sometimes, he wouldn’t say anything and I thought maybe he had changed. But then he would just come out with stuff…I kept hoping he would change…I thought it was maybe a phase he was going through…his neighbours seemed to really respect him.”

The court also heard, through Macht’s lawyer, David Tarnow, how his client had a decorated past as a volunteer at church and in a number of children’s charities and organizations, such as: St. Vincent De Paul in Vancouver; St. Joseph the Worker in Richmond; Big Brothers and SOS Children’s Charity. (Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver said they have no record of Macht ever volunteering with them.)

According to one of Macht’s character witnesses, he also used to work at a private boarding school, caring for children.

Peacock told the court that the Crown was seeking a one-year jail term for Macht, followed by a three-year probation order, a DNA order and ban from 11 communicating with the

boy and his family.

The minimum sentence is 90 days, with the maximum being two years.

While reading her emotionally-charged victim impact statement in court, the boy’s mother told how her family is “haunted and disgusted by this.”

She told how her son was “acting out” at school, being aggressive for no apparent reason and was skipping classes.

“I talked to Bernie for advice; he suggested it was bullying. I thought the trips with Bernie would help him,” she said, while fighting back tears.

“I didn’t know (Macht) was hiding my son from his wife. I feel betrayed on the deepest level. He abused my trust in the most disgusting and deceitful way. I’m grateful my son had the courage to speak up, otherwise, I’ve no doubt he would have continued this abuse.

“This was not an isolated moment, this was abuse over an extended period of time while in a position of complete trust. I would question children’s safety when this man is around.

This man robbed my son of a year of his life.”

Referring to Macht’s pre-sentence background report, Peacock said Macht had told doctors he blamed his actions, in part, on his “previously repressed homosexuality” and that, now he’s openly gay, his danger to reoffend is reduced.

“Going after boys was safer for me, but not for the youth, of course,” Macht said to one doctor.

However, the same doctor said in the report that Macht “still needs to come to terms with his sexual arousal from young males.”

Peacock, however, said the Crown’s concern centres around Macht’s “grooming” being “protracted and calculated” and that he “took steps to insert himself into their lives when he knew they were vulnerable.

However, Peacock added, Macht, who had no criminal record, pleaded guilty early, negating the need for a trial and has shown willingness to seek treatment.

Macht’s lawyer, Tarnow, told the court of Macht and his family’s “deep regret, guilt and shock...for what has occurred.

Tarnow told how after Macht lost his teaching job in 1996, he made a career in software sales that are now global.

“There are 70 people in the company. If he was to be jailed for more than 90 days, he will lose his position,” said Tarnow.

Tarnow then asked Judge Jennifer Oulton if one of Macht’s character witnesses could speak, provoking a shake of the head and stare to the gallery from the boy’s mom.

“I think I’d rather just read his letter,” Judge Oulton told Tarnow.

While summarizing Macht’s character references, Tarnow selected comments such as Macht’s abuse being a “terrible mistake… during a weak moment in his life.”

Tarnow is asking for the minimum 90-day sentence for Macht, citing his client’s need to provide for his estranged wife and adult daughter.

Judge Oulton deferred sentence until Oct. 26.

On Macht’s LinkedIn profile, he lists being the co-coordinator for St. Vincent De Paul’s Christmas Hamper Campaign.

A St. Vincent De Paul spokesman said the church deeply regrets the trauma suffered by the victim and branded Macht “despicable.”

He added that Macht didn’t formally volunteer with the church and was not the coordinator for the hamper program, indicating that Macht inserted himself into the situation to gain access to vulnerable people.

Supporters and critics of proportional representation met in Richmond last Thursday for a debate ahead of a provincial referendum on whether B.C. should change its electoral system.

British Columbians can submit their votes via mail starting Oct. 22 on whether to keep the current first-pastthe-post system or move to one of three proposed alternatives.

Panelists for each side took their seats in front of an audience of about 60 people on the top floor of Kwantlen Polytechnique University’s new Wilson School of Design.

BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver opened the evening by calling for a change to proportional representation. His party consistently sees a far larger share of the popular vote compared to how many seats it wins in the legislature.

He criticized the current lack of geographic party representation, pointing to Richmond’s four Liberal MLAs, and asked where a Green

or NDP supporter could go for an advocate to bring an issue up in the legislature. He also criticized Premier John Horgan’s attempt to “buy votes” in strategic ridings by removing bridge tolls and offering a renter’s rebate.

Jas Johal, MLA for RichmondQueensborough, took the podium next to argue for sticking with the current system. All four of Richmond’s provincial ridings went to BC Liberal MLAs in May 2017, and all four of them oppose a shift to proportional representation.

Johal said proportional representation makes the ballot more complicated and makes it easier for extremists and dictators to come into

power.

Bill Tieleman, a panelist against proportional representation, pointed to several European democracies using the system that have seen a rise in far-right extremist parties.

“I’m very concerned because we have a lot of different immigrant communities,” he said. “And if there’s a hard right extremist party the positions they’re going to take could be very problematic...”

Amandeep Singh, a panelist supporting proportional representation, argued one of the current system’s flaws is a party that wins a minority of support can hold all the power.

“More than 50 per cent of the vote

went to everybody else [Greens and NDP during the last provincial election], yet out of four MLAs you have none,” he said. “The entrenched powers have an interest in keeping that [system].”

But Tieleman argued it goes too far in the other direction, leading to “perpetual minority governments.”

“That creates economic and societal instability,” he said.

Johal warned that paralysis from a government that couldn’t get parties to agree during a destructive wildfire season could be catastrophic.

But Maria Dobrinskaya, the other pro-proportional representation panelist, argued that more minority governments could actually foster co-operation between politicians.

“It’s not about one party or another but...what voters want,” she said.

She also criticized first-past-the-post because it gives citizens who live in safe ridings the impression that their vote doesn’t matter.

“Whether or not I show up to vote, the outcome is pretty much determined,” she said. “The MLAs in those seats are very hard to remove.

The accountability is not there.”

Stolen kids wigs still stolen The 66 wigs recovered by police last week were not the ones destined for sick kids that were previously stolen.

It was first thought by Vancouver Police that the recovered wigs were part of the 150 or so — that were set to go to kids fighting cancer and other serious illnesses — that were stolen from Eva and Co in Vancouver a few weeks ago.

Some of the hair donated for making the wigs was collected at fundraising events in Richmond, organized by Steveston-based Wigs for Kids BC (W4K).

A researcher who has spent two decades uncovering the truth about genetically engineered foods is set to give a talk on his findings at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond next week.

Steven Druker, founder and executive director of U.S.-based Alliance for Bio-Integrity, alleges the risks of genetically engineered foods have been underestimated.

Druker points to a report delivered by the Royal Society of Canada, the senior national council of Canadian scholars, which he says states genetically engineered crops have created “at least one and perhaps more unintended side effects, some of which could be deleterious to human health.”

“For that reason (the Royal Society) stated that it’s scientifically unjustifiable to presume that any, or conclude that any genetically engineered food is safe, unless its safety has been demonstrated through rigorous testing,” Druker said.

Druker’s talk, scheduled for Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Melville Centre for Dialogue, is being hosted by KPU’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems.

For farmers, Druker said it’s time to stop planting genetically engineered crops. “I’m pretty sure most of the farmers in the Richmond area are good people,” Druker said.

“If they knew, they wouldn’t want to be planting crops that have been demonstrated to be toxic.”

The challenge, however, is for consumers who may not know how to identify genetically engineered foods.

“It’s difficult for consumers in Canada and the United States because our respective governments have gone out of their way to prevent consumers from getting adequate knowledge,” Druker said.

“One of the main omissions is the lack of labeling…therefore the consumer has been kept in the dark.”

Overall, Druker said even Health Canada has acted irresponsibly in regard to genetically engineered foods by ignoring the findings of the Royal Society, in spite of the fact the federal body was the one to commission the report.

2018 Richmond Election On Saturday, October 20, 2018, eligible voters in Richmond will be electing a Mayor, eight Councillors, and seven School Trustees. Those elected in October 2018 will serve in office for four years.

Are you eligible to vote?

You may vote as a resident elector if you: • are a Canadian citizen • are at least 18 years old on General Voting Day (Saturday, October 20, 2018) • have lived in Richmond for at least 30 days before registering to vote • have lived in British Columbia for at least six months before registering to vote • are not disqualified from voting by law

While most mayoral and city council candidates in Richmond have so far displayed a rather begrudging attitude toward cannabis legalization, one independent candidate is focusing on the positive impacts it could have on the city.

Criminal lawyer and city council candidate Jason Tarnow is the first to declare he wants to bring cannabis retail stores to Richmond.

He says it’s an opportunity for Richmond to seize valuable tax revenue.

“There’s this reefer madness mentality coming out of city hall and it’s really an antiquated line of thought,” he said. “Richmond’s missing the boat on a huge opportunity to gather millions of dollars back into programming.”

Ted Townsend, spokesperson for the city of Richmond, said current bylaws do not permit cannabis retail stores in the city.

Thus far, brick-and-mortar pot boutiques have gotten a frosty reception from council. Coun. Chak Au chaired a concern group pushing to postpone legalization and Mayor Malcolm Brodie has aired concerns about the enforcement expenses.

At a campaign news conference last week, incumbent Coun. Carol Day said she did not want a proliferation of retail stores and suggested those in Richmond seeking legal cannabis could order it online.

Richmond councillors have voted to task city staff with reviewing code of conduct options for council following a heated debate that led to a 5-3 vote on the issue last week.

Coun. Carol Day brought the matter forward at a general purposes committee meeting on Sept. 17, when she proposed that staff create a “code of ethics” for councillors that is similar to the ethics followed by city managers in B.C.

They did not respond to a request for comment by publication deadline.

“There is a concern in the community regarding a code of ethics for councillors and we can’t have people mistrustful of council,” Day told the Richmond News.

“What I believe is a big contributing factor is the fact that we have developers on council.”

Currently, the Local Government Management Association of B.C. has a 13-point code of ethics in place for city management.

In particular, Day said the point that states management shall “not deal in property directly or indirectly within the municipality he/she serves other than his/her personal residence without first informing the Municipal Council, in writing, in open council meeting” would be helpful for Richmond’s council.

The premise, according to the society, is to “offer a unique experience for children and families who face the ongoing challenges of living with autism.”

But it wasn’t tears of sadness or sorrow that were running down the Steveston mom’s face; the raw emotion was that of pure, unbridled joy.

And since 2012, over two days in Tofino in early September, the society and its sponsors host dozens of families living with autism.

It was the sight of Macklin’s two sons – Lexx, 15, and Charlie, 7 – being at one with the surf and being released, even temporarily, from the daily pain that is living with autism.

The kids with autism get to go surfing in the morning and then the siblings can join in the fun in the afternoon.

Both boys are autistic and, although described as “high-functioning,” have different and profound behavioural challenges.

On the surfboard, however – thanks to the SUPA Society, sponsors and a team of surfing instructors and behavioural interventionists – their baggage was lifted.

“My boys can be anxious and very tense,” Macklin told the Richmond News.

“My older son, especially, has had a very difficult time. He is a gifted learner, but only goes to school part-time and does the rest online.

“But when he walked into the water, I could see his shoulders relaxing. And after a couple

“But this showed them that it’s possible to feel this way. I wanted to tell my story, as this could benefit so many other families.”

The Vancouver International Tennis Academy (VITA) at the River Club is opening its doors, and memberships, to adults. The academy, originally opened for juniors, is expanding its roster of players.

In the short time since they opened in January 2018, the club’s popularity has grown immensely and by demand, now offers its world class facilities to adults as well.

“The biggest thing for adults when they come here is they’re always looking for tournaments, socials, leagues, and adult lessons,” said Todd Quesnel, the General Manager at VITA. “So we have the ability to create those programs.”

Because the academy is still in its infancy, Quesnel said, it is a real opportunity for its members to shape what they want it to look like. The tennis academy prides itself on letting its players,

whether it be junior or adult players, create their own tennis. For the adult players, that could mean creating the social atmosphere where players can voice their opinions and desires. “That could be a men’s double nights, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, those are all things that we’re hoping to create as well to add to that club atmosphere,” Quesnel added.

In addition to the tennis courts, VITA’s newly renovated gym, which is open seven days a week with extended hours, is another enticement for many adults. A yoga and dance studio is open for bookings and classes. More than that, the swimming pool and squash courts also provide VITA members with a large selection of exercise options. Squash memberships are available along with access to leagues, ladders, socials, tournaments, adult and junior private lessons. “We wanted to create a facility where adults could come in here and book courts, get a variety of different fitness options, and join a program that makes them feel like it’s a second home,” Quesnel said.

A newly-formed Richmond-based organization says it has a solution to the city’s housing affordability problem.

Lower Mainland Affordable Housing Foundation, founded by real estate developer and council candidate Sunny Ho, announced Monday that it will seek funding from BC Housing to create more affordable rental units in Lower Mainland.

The foundation, formed in June, submitted a proposal this month to BC Housing to build 125 affordable rental units for low-income residents on land Ho owns in Chilliwack, using provincial funds from the B.C. Housing Hub program.

“This is just our first project to show our operating model,” said Ho.

“We hope to work with local organizations in Richmond to create affordable housing with funding from the Province using this model.”

The proposed project, including an 8,000 sq. ft. community centre on the ground floor, will be managed by settlement organization MOSAIC, said Ho at a press conference on Monday.

If approved, the foundation will receive a $100,000 per unit construction subsidy and other funding from BC Housing for the Chilliwack project, according to Ho. “Our foundation has a team of housing specialists who can provide expertise on construction, technicians, paperwork, law, etc., to make sure that the project moves forward smoothly,” said Ho. Ho said when all financing is in place, and the land cost is paid back, he will donate the money, approximately $1 million, to the foundation.

Historically, it was not complicated for British Columbians to transfer title to the property(ies) as part of an Estate plan. If you go back 30 years or so, there were no significant taxes or other major expenses involved. In addition, we had just come through the period of high interest rates and a major wave of foreclosures, so real estate prices were relatively low. The Property Transfer tax (1% of the first $100,000 of value and 2% of the value above $100,000) was introduced in 1987 and a year later, Probate fees (1.4% of the value of the Estate above $50,000) were introduced by our Provincial Government. But now, 30 years later, real estate prices have increased beyond everybody’s expectations and any transfer of title an owner makes either is subject to capital gain tax or the transfer has to be reported to CRA, even if it is a transfer of title of your residence. It has, in my opinion, reached the point where people who own property should think very carefully whether any transfer of title (that isn’t a desired sale) is worth the risk. Such title transfers are done at least partly to avoid exposure of an expensive asset to Provincial probate fees, the plan typically being to move the title to the property into the child’s name when the parent dies.

That takes the property out of the parent’s Estate, directly to the child’s exclusive ownership. It may sound straightforward but it comes with risk. Last week, reasons for judgment were released in a B.C. case called Gully v. Gully. This is a case worth looking at.

Background Facts In 1999, a mother (the applicant in the case) purchased a home in Burnaby. Acting on some advice, sixteen years later, she added her son, the defendant, to title as a joint tenant owner. She did not tell him she did it and of course, no money was paid to her for that transfer. It appears to have been simple Estate planning. It is not clear in the reasons whether the documents were done at a Lawyer’s office. In 2017, a company called Ledcor Construction obtained judgment against the son, for $800,000 and registered the judgment against him on the title to the Burnaby house. The mother (who still owned a half interest in the house as the other joint tenant owner) then launched this legal action against her son and the construction company. She claimed that her son held no legally recognized interest in the property and the company therefore could not properly register its judgment on the title and so it should come off the title.

A point of Law Back in 2007, a Supreme Court of Canada case (now well known as “The Pecore case”) held that where a parent adds a child to the title to property (or to a Bank account the parent holds), the legal question arises what was the parent’s intention at the time. Either the parent intended to gift the asset to the child, so the child could keep it forever, or the parent did not so intend and the child held the asset on Resulting Trust for the parent and so when the parent dies, the asset returns to the parent’s Estate. Therefore, in this case, the mother was applying essentially for a Court Order that she did not intend a gift of the land to her son, so that he held his interest on resulting trust for her, and therefore the judgment had to be removed from title.

Court’s Decision At the time the mother transferred title in 2015 to her son, she also made a new Will. In that Will, one of the clauses actually explained her transfer of “assets” to her son and other persons. She expressed her intention right in her Will. Two years later, in 2017, the mother made a new Will, disinheriting her son. It was done one month after the construction company registered its judgment on the title. The mother’s explanation at the Court hearing was that the 2015 transfer was designed to facilitate the transfer of her title on her death to her grandchildren. The Court was not buying that argument, and instead found that the mother did gift the property to her son in 2015. Legally, gifts, once received, are irrevocable. So the son was the full owner of the half interest in the home.

Conclusions This is a very unusual case. First, when the mother chose to transfer title to the house bringing her son into partial ownership, she ought to have told her son or at least inquired into his financial situation.

Second, it does not appear that any documents (such as a Deed of Gift or Declaration of Intention) were ever made to support the transfer. Given the value of the asset here, more care should have been taken with the planning the mother did. Instead, the mother took the risk of transferring perhaps her most valuable asset without any protection for herself. I have no doubt that she has experienced considerable stress and doubtless the legal fees she incurred in this case have been significant. It is critical that these kinds of transfer decisions need to be approached slowly, with a lot of thought and at least one legal opinion. Transferor beware !

Step back in time on a brand new interactive walking tour, stopping at four celebrated historic attractions—Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, the Steveston Interurban Tram, Steveston Museum, and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

A Richmond woman who’s perfected her lasagna recipe auditioned for Master Chef Canada on Tuesday.

Kirsti Sater hopes to win a spot on the TV show to demonstrate her culinary skills and her aptitude for cooking on camera.

“My biggest dream of my life would be to have a cooking show,” she said. “When I graduated, I wanted to be a chef. But I had kids and wasn’t able to go to university.”

She’s a manager at the Lush factory in Richmond, but said she’d love to start working in the culinary scene. Her family is contemplating a move to Kelowna, and she wants to work in an eatery at an Okanagan winery.

Her cooking experience comes from feeding her three kids and she decided to make her signature dish for the audition: her lasagna.

“It’s been a staple of my life since I was very small,” she said. “When it was my birthday my mom would ask what I wanted and it was always lasagna.”

She said it gave her confidence because it was the first meal she remembers making for her family as a young woman.

Now, she makes her own pasta sheets from scratch and her own ricotta cheese. She gives it a twist by using pork instead of beef and finishes it off by adding parmesan, romano, asiago and mozzarella.

“You can’t go wrong when you put five cheeses into anything,” she laughed.

For her audition, she plated it on her grandmother’s vintage china. But she wasn’t allowed to heat it up or cook it onsite, so she prepared it on Monday.

Another Steveston woman also auditioned that day.

Sater said she will find out if her audition was successful in the week of Oct. 20.

He added that drinking water is also very important, as it can help reduce inflammation in the body. Treatments such as acupuncture can also help by improving circulation.

Reporter takes a Chance In a bid to strike something off his bucket list, News reporter Alan Campbell enlisted the help of Yolanda Blommers, of Richmond’s Blue Meadow Farm, to teach him how to ride a horse. Over the next few weeks (or maybe months), at her three-acre riding school in rural, south-east Richmond, Blommers will be digging into her 30 plus years of coaching expertise to get Campbell competent in the saddle. HORSING AROUND

Driving south on No. 6 Road, close to Steveston Highway, en route to Blue Meadow Farm’s horse-back riding school, I was already feeling nervous and slightly nauseous.

So when school owner and coach Yolanda Blommers told me with a smile that my first riding lesson would be on a horse called Chance, I assumed she was having a laugh.

I consoled myself with fact that Blommers had told me prior to the inaugural lesson that I likely wouldn’t be riding the horse on the first day.

“So, get your helmet on and we’ll get you up,” she said, within moments of arriving.

Wait, what?

“Most people on their first lesson like to get on the horse,” Blommers added.

I’m not most people.

Before getting the maiden “leg-up,” Blommers introduced me, formally, to Chance, a lovely, bay gelding, quarter horsecross, who she described as a “seasoned lesson horse.”

“Don’t pat his head straight away…some don’t like that,” she said, a few seconds after I’d patted him on the big white stripe between his eyes.

She’d set up an English saddle for me, as opposed to western, which was fine, as they didn’t have any Scottish ones.

While showing me how to walk Chance with the “lead rope,” the old boy tried to take a couple of playful nibbles.

“He’s just testing you,” Blommers assured.

More like he could smell my inexperience wafting through the covered arena.

After breezing through some safety tips or horsey dos and don’ts and through the various components of the saddle and tack (bridle, bit, etc.), it was time for the big mount, via some steps, of course (one thing at a time).

Posture was the first port of call, back straight, heels down, eyes forward and reins between your fingers. Then some balance exercises for coordination, as Blommers led Chance around the arena.

All good so far, I was told. Then a “lunge-line” was attached to the horse. Wait, is he going to lunge? When is he going to

The latter of the two actions involves slightly raising your backside off the saddle while motioning your hips back and forth, all to the stride of the horse.

Having watched my colleague, Megan Devlin, who can actually ride, doing the posting trot two weeks previous, also aboard Chance, I had an idea what it looked like.

And although feeling – and most likely looking – like a middle-aged man aboard a horse for the first time, it’s incredible how you manage to find the horse’s rhythm very quickly once your nether regions have slammed off the saddle a few times.

The trots mastered, ahem, it was time to “go large” around the arena.

Frantically scanning my eyes around the arena for fences, I was relieved to hear it was merely walking your horse around the area, while practicing stopping, going and turning.

I was pleased to hear that “whoah” is still a commonly used phrase. I knew that one!

Credit where it’s due, however, old “Chancey” was very responsive to my hesitant urges, both verbal and physical.

Dismounting, however, was much less pretty, and downright ungracious if I’m honest (glad there were no cameras).

However, I was surprised at how comfortable I felt aboard him and couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear.

And after unsaddling and brushing the horse, taking off the tack and putting it away, it was time to take Chance back to his private paddock at the farm entrance.

After leading him in and setting him loose, he paused for a moment, as if to say “yea, you did OK, now off you pop.”

Women’s Leadership Circle takes shape

n Oct. 4, there’s a new group launching in Richmond and it’s taking aim at inequality.

Designed to be a catalyst for women in leadership roles and in particular, to promote and empower women in business, the Women’s Leadership Circle (WLC) of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce is set to launch with an evening cocktail reception on Oct. 4 at the Business Development Bank of Canada’s (BDC) Richmond offce.

Founded by Barbara Tinson, Chair of the Richmond Chamber, the WLC has identifed three main goals: connecting women to one another through networking opportunities, inspiring women (including young women) to seek opportunities to advance their careers and educating the

business community on key issues facing women in business, and fnally, recognizing the women in Richmond who are forging leadership paths.

Though the group is designed to advance gender equity in leadership positions, men are welcome to join.

“We won’t get anywhere in promoting gender equality if we don’t invite men to the table” explained Tinson.

“Nonetheless, there are still very real issues that are specifc to women.

“From inequity in senior management roles, the wage gap, unconscious bias, to the revenue gap we see in women-owned small and medium enterprises, there is no shortage of need for a group like this in Richmond.”

Steveston tour reveals bittersweet past Daisy Xiong You may go to Steveston a lot for the boutique shops, local restaurants and boardwalks strolls, but do you know what the village was like 100 years ago and who lived and worked on the land?

Next to a few nice sea-facing houses stands the Chinese Bunkhouse, where up to 100 Chinese fishermen squeezed in at the same time. The black and white photos stuck along the posts of the narrow beds reveals the men’s longing for their families far away.

The second stop is the Steveston Interurban Tram, where Thomas will invite all guests on board to be passengers again on a tram that serviced the city from 1913 to 1958. When guests get off the tram, there will be locally produced popcorn and soda waiting for them to take a break with.

One place that cannot be left out from a historic tour is the Steveston Museum,

Richmond’s annual Culture Days celebration is back again this weekend and this year there are more than 70 free activities planned throughout the city.

10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Tune into a pop-up short wave radio station – For one weekend only, a unique do-it-yourself radio station will animate the Cultural Centre Plaza. Tune into 107.9 FM during the time to hear a live Culture Days broadcast and music selected by local youth.

Thanks to a new agreement between Tourism Richmond and Alipay’s mobile payment platform, Richmond merchants will soon be able to better market to Chinese tourists.

Alipay, which is associated with Chinese online retail giant Alibaba, allows merchants to highlight their business on a location-based “discover” function.

Merchants can also market to Chinese consumers, while customers can receive promotional information through the mobile app.

In China, Alipay has more than 700 million users and more than 70 per cent use the app to pay for goods and services.

“We see this partnership as an opportunity to help our stakeholders and merchants to become China-ready,” said Nancy Small, chief executive officer of Tourism Richmond in a press release.

“We’re seeing visitation from China grow year over year. Offering this payment option is a first step to welcoming Chinese customers, whether they’re here as a tourist visiting Metro Vancouver, international stu-

Last Friday, a new Indigenous womanowned airline announced its launch and start of service coming next spring.

Called Iskwew Air, the airline will begin its flights next March out of Vancouver International Airport’s south terminal. The airline is expected to offer charter services and hopes to provide scheduled service to remote communities across the province in an effort to boost accessibility and Indigenous tourism.

“My homeland in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, is a fly-in-fly-out community, and I know how important connection and accessible transportation options are for remote communities,” said Iskwew Air CEO, Teara Fraser.

“Iskwew Air will provide services to communities like these and lead the industry by championing Indigenous people and culture.”

Christmas Fund seeks helpers Santa and his team of elves rely on volunteers to make holiday wishes come true, via the Richmond Christmas Fund.

This year’s recruitment process is now underway, with applications being accepted for registration assistants, toy sorters, gift wrappers, drivers and more.

Operated by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), the fund is supported annually by well over 100 volunteers, who work to ensure that low-income families can celebrate the holidays with a warm meal and gifts under the tree.

“Volunteers are the heart and soul of the

Christmas Fund,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “The time they give makes an enormous difference, and is absolutely critical to the program’s success. It’s impossible to overstate their impact.”

In 2017, 118 volunteers contributed 2,133 hours, allowing the Christmas Fund to help 2,162 low-income residents – a 25 per cent increase over the previous year.

Tireless Sander was born to coach Richmond Sports Wall inductee is behind the bench for his 37th season Mark Booth RICHMOND NEWS

Back in his days as a kid attending Thompson Elementary School, AJ Sander recalled doing a little coaching from the sidelines during floor hockey games. Little did he know he had discovered his niche that would evolve into such a big part of his life.

Sander is among 10 inductees who will be welcomed to the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame during an official ceremony on Saturday at city hall thanks to a remarkable minor hockey coaching career that is now in its 37th season.

He has enjoyed an outstanding run guiding the Richmond Ravens Midget rep girls team that includes 10 consecutive appearances at the provincial championships and nine podium finishes. Four were gold medal wins. Prior to that he spent 25 years coaching boys teams in the Richmond Minor Hockey Association.

Along the way there has been plenty of individual recognition too including twice being named Pacific Coast Amateur Coach of Year and a winner at the annual Richmond Sports Awards.

His tireless volunteer commitment is not for the accolades but for love of the game.

“I just found a passion and coaching was something I was able to excel at,” said the 50-yearold father of three who works for the City of Richmond. “I don’t think I could walk away. I think I have just invested too much time now.

Someone at my work said ‘you use your vacation time (to coach) hockey?’ I don’t think twice about it and just adjust my life schedule around it.”

It was Sander’s late introduction to the game as a player that actually led to such an early start behind the bench. He didn’t begin playing until he was in Pee Wee and that left his skating and skills behind many of his peers.

“I really couldn’t even skate well

at the time and it was definitely a rocky road,” recalled Sander.

“My brother then started playing and his coach asked if I wanted to help out at his practices. I figured why not with my brother being there already. So I began assistant coaching for several years.

“I found when I got into coaching my game improved too. When you are teaching them you are learning as well and I was applying it to my own game.”

Richmond Minor’s Pee Wee House manager eventually assigned Sander his own team.

A bumpy start to his inaugural season was followed by a blistering second half. The winning only provided more fuel for Sander.

Season two saw his team win the league and playoff banners.

The next step was moving onto Richmond Minor’s rep program where he ironically got help from Stan Sutherland — the father of NHL referee Kelly Sutherland who also will be inducted on Saturday.

Sander also worked with Ted Nagata and Bob Booth at the Pee Wee and Bantam levels.

“All these people who have touched and worked with me through years have been a big part of it,” said Sander.

He discovered his ultimate comfort zone was the Midget level and that’s where Sander remained until he was approached by Pat and John Korenic about coming to the Ravens for a new challenge to lead the midget girls team.

“I talked about what we needed to put into the program and they bought into it,” said Sander. “Patti Martin was the president at the time and she understood it needed to be a long term commitment and not switching coaches every year.

“The goal was set to make the provincials and that first year we qualified. The next year the plan was to stay there and make it into the top three. We went on to make eight straight finals.”

Sander got the opportunity to coach his two sons at some point of their minor hockey careers.

He also cherished the chance to watch them play from the stands as a “hockey dad” where they would be his sole focus.

His daughter never played hockey which made his move to the Ravens even more remarkable, although he did get to coach his two nieces on what proved to be championship teams.

Easing the time away from home is his wife Satwant being part of the Ravens staff since day one as the team’s safety person.

Today, Sander’s assistants happen to be some former Raven players. It’s part of the tradition the program has built up over the years and includes an alumni game as well.

over to coach girls with no daughters on the team. I thought we needed a female presence and she happens to be a nurse. So she is there with me on the bench for all the games and tournaments,” continued Sander. “It has worked out great.”

“Benefitting financially from coaching has never been a driving force for me,” he concluded.

“I have just never thought of it that way. I had my loyalty with Richmond Minor where I played as well and now it’s with the Ravens also being a Richmond association.

“This is my hometown.”

Richmond talent big part of soaring Thunderbirds The UBC Thunderbirds are rolling in Canada West men’s soccer play and it’s plenty of Richmond flavour leading the charge.

The Thunderbirds extended their win streak to seven games and remain unbeaten in conference play (7-0-1) with two more victories last weekend — 1-0 over Mt. Royal and 3-1 against MacEwan.

Striker Caleb Clarke is showing why he was considered a significant off-season signing — scoring his seventh goal of the campaign in the won over McEwan which is tied for conference honours. The Whitecaps Academy product, who also sent some time with the MLS club before a stint in Germany, had a hat trick a week earlier in a win at Saskatchewan.

Clarke was one of four Richmond F.C. products in the starting 11 for Friday’s match against Mt. Royal at Thunderbird Stadium.

He was joined by goalkeeper Jason Roberts, defender Riley Pang and midfielder Rylan Sangha. The UBC roster features two other homegrown talents — defenders Theo Lorenz and Liam Robinson.

Roberts picked up his fourth shutout of the season, having started all eight conference games. Pang showcased his versatility by starting at centre back and is capable of playing in all three areas of the park. Sangha has now made four starts and is credited with a pair of assists.

Football community loses an icon B.C. High School Football is mourning the loss of one of its greatest contributors who made an immense impact on the sport in Richmond.

Matt Phillips passed away on Saturday at the age of 85 after a battle with cancer.

Born in New West, Phillips played collegiately at Pepperdine College in Los Angeles before taking his career back home to play for the B.C. Lions in 1957 as an offensive lineman. However, it was his passion for teaching and football where he would make his greatest impact, especially in Richmond where he helped launch programs at Steveston, Cambie and London.

He also coached for three seasons at Palmer and made one year stops at McRoberts and Richmond High.

In 2016, Phillips was inducted into the B.C. Football Hall of Fame as a builder, along with the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame. He also was recognized for his 30-plus years of work as an official and is a past winner of the prestigious B.C. School Sports Honour Award.

It was just last week, 2018 Richmond Sports Wall of Fame inductees Ian Anderson and Doug Staveley reflected on the impact Phillips made on their lives.

He coached them at Lord Byng in Vancouver and they later joined him as

“Neither of us would be here today if it wasn’t for Matt Phillips,” said Anderson, now 76. “He forgot more about football than I would ever know.”

In total, over 20 student athletes who played under Phillips went on to become coaches at the high school and community levels.

Two more were Bill and Bruce Haddow who played for him on the junior varsity team at Cambie. They too would become lifelong friends and Phillips regularly visited Bill at his White Rock Beach Beer Company tasting room.

Phillips made the effort to attend the Haddows’ final home game at Boyd last October which concluded their four decade long coaching careers.

“I’ve known him since junior high at Cambie and we had reacquainted ourselves in recent years. He would regularly come down here and would love to sit down to talk about football and life in general,” said Bill who visited his good friend hours before he passed away and wore his old Cambie jersey at work this past weekend in tribute to him.

“I know he wasn’t in the greatest of health when he came to our final game but he wouldn’t miss it either. That’s just the kind of man Matt was.”

A service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m. at Brighouse United Church in Richmond.

She often regaled us with the story of a destiny predetermined by parents who sat her down at the kitchen table one afternoon in the family home in Chilliwack and matter-of-factly announced to her that she, their middle daughter, was going to be a teacher. And so it began.

She moved to Vancouver shortly after the end of her senior year and immersed herself in teacher training; a small town girl in the big city. She joined a few clubs to meet new friends, and her love of sport eventually led her to a position on a local girls’ basketball team. It was during that time that she met her husband-tobe, Gordon McDonald, a city boy, who also played but coached as well.

After Gordon’s sudden passing in 1981, she remained very active and engaged in her community.

Edie replaced her former evenings of Scottish Country Dance with themed nights for her Bridge Club. She became a constant at the Richmond Curling Club; playing, volunteering at bonspiels sometimes wearing one of her eclectic costumes, and spending time instructing young students.

She was the contact for new members of the Green Acres Tuesday Ladies Golf Club and was sought after to join the group at Mylora. As if this bit of being busy wasn’t enough, as a senior herself, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels with her good friend Marie.

At home, Edie appreciated the art of Robert Bateman and the poetry of Shel Silverstein. She enjoyed a variety of music and was particularly moved by Louis Armstrong’s ‘It’s a Wonderful World’.

The Province crossword was her challenge. She did it every day, into her nineties. She was still able to ride her bike in her early octogenarian years and could often be found mid-morning at Gary Point relaxing on a bench in the sunshine, sipping a coffee and chatting with Pecky the Crow. Her love of all animals (in particular, Great Danes, felines and bunnies) led to her support of the Richmond SPCA and also to her coveted collection of sunglass-wearing swine-shaped money banks.

She reveled in family time of any kind. Whether ‘senior’s tour’ on a ship or a plane; a ride around with grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a quiet Clint Eastwood; or playing along with Jeopardy on lived in the moment, laughed often, and loved deeply.

It is with a heavy heart we announce the death of two great people. Colleen and Germain. They had a love like no other. Colleen died from a long battle with COPD with family by her side. Germain passed away 12 short days later from a heart attack.

Germain is survived by many brothers and sisters and two sons Fabien and Sebastian. Colleen is survived by her twin brother Bud, son Jim and daughter Courtenay and grandchildren Natalia, Cayden, Gunner, Jessica and Brooklyn.

There will be a small service for close family and friends on October 7th, 2018.

Gordon would eventually form the powerhouse Vancouver Eilers Jewellers Senior A Women’s basketball team, (inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 1991) and even though Edie was just five foot four inches tall, he insisted that she had the skill and athleticism to play point guard. Her caring impact on her charges was evidenced by random thank you notes that arrived in her mail and also by the hugs she received on the street from Thomas Kidd alumni. After thirty-five years of report cards, field trips, track meets, and countless evening hours spent at home prepping for lessons, she retired, cartwheeling out the school front doors on her last day.

She remained a life member of the Retired Teachers Association.

BALDWIN, Colleen Anne August 12, 1953 to August 30, 2018 and QUESNEL, Germain Joseph July 3, 1961 to September 11, 2018

DENGLER (nee Ruscheinski), Magdalena (Leni), Dengler (nee Ruscheinski), Magdalena (Leni), was born on July 12, 1927, in Karamurat, Romania and died on September 15, 2018 at the age of 91. She was the oldest of 11 children born to parents, Alois and Rofina Ruscheinski. Leni married Friedrich (Fritz) Richard Dengler on November 5, 1949 in Strasskirchen, Bavaria, West Germany.

She immigrated to Richmond, BC, Canada with Fritz and her two young children in June of 1958.

She was a dedicated wife to Fritz for 45 years until his death on November 9, 1994.

She was a devoted mother to Fritz (Patricia) and Walter, and a caring grandmother (Oma) to Michelle, Lia, Aleta, Edward and Victoria. She is survived by her brothers, Leo and Adolf, and sisters, Betty, Emily, Erika and Margaret. She is predeceased by her parents, brothers, Joseph, David and Willi, and sister, Aurora.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her family, relatives and friends. She loved her garden, and when her health was good, would always be seen working outside in her garden. In her retirement, she loved square dancing, knitting, chatting with her neighbours, and talking for hours while accompanied with her pet dog, Tyra.

Many thanks to all of the caring staff at Rosewood Manor Nursing Home which was her home since December 2016.

MCLEOD, Edith Louise (nee Keller) September 1920 - September 2018 McLeod - Edith Louise (nee Keller) passed away peacefully on September 12, 2018 at Courtyard Gardens, Richmond, BC, just shy of her 98th birthday. Born in Vancouver in 1920, she graduated from Kitsilano High School. During WWII, Edith worked in her father’s dental office located at the foot of Lonsdale Street in North Vancouver, often assisting with first aid care for industrial accident casualties from the nearby ship building yards.

During the War, she also met Bill McLeod. They married in 1946 and raised their family in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Mississauga, Ottawa and finally moved to Richmond, BC in 1976.

Throughout her life, Edith was a very active member of her community, often serving on United Church committees. Locally, she was a member of Brighouse United Church, the Clan MacLeod Society of Vancouver, the Richmond L a w n B o w l i n g C l u b , R e g e n t ’s G a t e S o c i a l Committee and the Courtyard Gardens Hand Chime Choir. Well known for her gardening “green thumb”, she devotedly nurtured her family connections and continued to actively make new friends throughout her long and fulfilling life.

Edith is lovingly remembered by her husband of 71 years, William (Bill) McLeod; daughter Vickie McLeod; son Bruce and daughter-in-law Betty McLeod; grandchildren Kelly McLeod and Cameron McLeod; brother Laurie and sister-in-law Linda Keller, sister-in-law Eleanor Harrison, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Her Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Brighouse United Church, 8151 Bennett Road, Richmond, BC V6Y 1N4. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Alfred moved to Vancouver from Winnipeg in 1969 and went into the store fixture business. Alfred joined Rotary in 1976 and became President of his club in 1981 and became District Governor of District 5040 for 89/90, with 63 clubs in Canada and the U.S.A. As an executive member of the Canadian Rotary Committee for International Development, Alfred served Rotary on 5 continents and 6 countries working with world community service for the poor and primarily children in mind.

FRANKLIN, Douglas Benjamin May 26, 1928 - September 17, 2018 Dad touched so many people in his life. We hardly know where to begin to thank you all for your many years of love and friendship. Doug cared deeply about his family and friends and was always concerned about doing the right thing. A retired Pharmacist and Sales Representative he continued with his lifelong goal of giving back to the community in the form of volunteering. Some of his volunteer work was with Meals on Wheels, The Vancouver Crisis Line, and he said the most fun was Greencoating at YVR. Doug joins his beloved wife Marjorie and is survived by his sister Dorothy Jean, his 3 children; Allison, Ben and Cathy, grandchildren and extended family. In lieu of flowers, Doug has requested donations to the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association PTSD counselling for first responders.

We’d like to say a special thank you to the staff at Richmond Hospital and the wonderful people in Palliative Care.

NOBLE, Ethel May “Peggy” CLOWES, Dorreen Valerie July 11, 1949 - September 18, 2018 On Tuesday, September 18th, our dear mother and granny went to be with Jesus. She had been suffering from pulmonary fibrosis for some time, however she passed away quickly and unexpectedly at Vancouver General Hospital. Born in Hazelton, BC, she belonged to the Kispiox Native Band and was known as M’o Dox (Madoxw) of Wilps Geel. She married Wayne Clowes in 1972 and they lived in Langley and eventually settled in Steveston in 1975. She loved living and raising her family in Steveston. After her divorce in 1995, she moved off her beloved Regent Street to Springmont Drive. Dorreen had a long career with the Richmond School Board and could often be found on weekends at the meat draws at the Army & Navy. After getting quite ill in January of this year, she moved to Surrey to be closer to her daughter Lisa and family. She enjoyed her short time at the Fleetwood Villa where she met many new friends and renewed her passion for bingo!

She is predeceased by her parents Bernard and Sarah Hindle, her sister Rhoda Hindle, her brother Chris Hindle, her son John Andrew Clowes and her grandsons Gavin and Jordan Milne. She will be truly missed by her daughter Lisa, husband Aaron and their three children: Alysha, Brody and Hayden and her son James, wife Suzanne and children Hayley and Andrew. We know she is now breathing the sweet air of Heaven with her Lord, whom she thanked every day.

Ethel May “Peggy” Noble of Richmond, BC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 98 years of age. She is survived by her loving son David of Miami Beach, son-in-law Douglas, nephews Dan and Brad, and niece Patti. Peggy was predeceased by her husband Sydney.
