Richmond’s general election day finally arrives this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 20.

“Ultimately, we want voters to have a positive voting experience,” said David Weber, chief election officer, in a press release. “Election officials at the voting place are well-trained to administer the voting process impartially, and we hope that Richmond voters will take a few minutes of their day to make their mark in Richmond.”

The big day is soon here.

On Saturday, Oct. 20 residents will go to the polls to select Richmond’s mayor and council, as well as school trustees.

The Richmond News editorial team will bring readers the latest results, reflections from candidates and analysis with local political experts via our website and social media platforms.

Throughout the day Saturday, our home page (Richmond-News.com) will be taken over with election coverage and just before the polls close, our live coverage begins.

Save our farmland with worthy new councillors Dear Richmond Voters, On May 14, 2018, Richmond council decided whether to reduce the allowed size of new houses on farmland from 1000 m2 to 500 m2. The reduced size was just within the Ministry of Agriculture guidelines to help save ALR farmland.

A YES vote to approve that change would have slowed our rapid loss of farmland.

But only three council members voted YES. They are Malcolm Brodie, Harold Steves (RCA) and Carol Day (RITE).

Sadly, all the other councillors voted NO. They failed to take action to protect the ALR from speculators. They were part of the situation but not the solution.

Fortunately, six of the citizens who spoke on the YES side at that May 14 meeting are now council candidates, and are all committed to saving farmland.

Wow! They are Kelly Greene (RCA), John Roston (IND), Judie Schneider (RCA), Niti Sharma (RITE), Jack Trovato (RCA), and Michael Wolfe (RITE).

I am a 38-year-old husband, homeowner and taxpayer from Kimberley B.C. I am here going to Langara College in Vancouver; however, I am unable to afford an apartment in Richmond. My only option was to buy an older camper to put on the back of my pickup truck and park on Dyke Road in Steveston. From there, I can access the grocery store, bus to the train, and the numerous other services that the area has to offer. Yes, I spend money in your community.

Only Malcolm Brodie, Carol Day and Harold Steves voted to stop mega mansions.

Thus far, I have been left alone to go about my daily business. However, in the last two weeks, I have received numerous parking warnings for parking over 72 hours in the same spot.

Second, there are no signs that state the length of time a vehicle can be parked in this particular location.

And third, I feel like I am being discriminated against for not having the capital to rent a house in this outrageous market your city offers. ($6,000 loan per semester from the government, minus tuition, doesn’t leave a lot for rent).

I have one semester left until I graduate with a diploma in political science (peace and conflict studies). I am slowly running out of the only option I have for accommodation while I study here.

Re: “Former church, children’s charity volunteer groomed teen boy for sex,” News, Sept. 28 As a friend of the family of Bernie Macht, I was offended by this two-page story. Was it really necessary to have all the details of the court printed? The story could have been reported with half the information and gotten the message across very clearly.

That boy and his family must feel like they are being victimized again. If any one from

his school found it was him, they would make his life miserable.

I have read your paper for years and don’t remember reading anything quite like this before. This is traumatic for everyone who knows any of the people involved.

In August, reasons for judgment were released in a tragic case, called Poulk Estate. The deceased needed surgery for an apparent bowel obstruction but the surgeon found cancer and 8 days later, the deceased died. Legally, however, it was an eventful period of time. The deceased had never made a Will. He had one daughter (who had been estranged), four siblings and no spouse. It appears that some of the siblings had attempted to have the deceased sign a (store bought) Will they had prepared in the days before he died. In it, the Estate was left to the four siblings. The daughter was disinherited. The Will had no signatures, was not witnessed and it had no markings of the deceased on it to indicate that the deceased approved it. A nurse reported in writing that the siblings were focused on a Will but the “patient requested that this not be the focus right now and he wants some time to think.” At a point, the deceased had held a pen and had the Will in front of him but was too physically weak and tired to sign. The Court held that there was not enough evidence to establish that the document was the testamentary intention of the deceased. The deceased died intestate and his daughter inherited his Estate (value of which was not disclosed).

In our city, where Styrofoam packaging dominates takeout, single-use plastic cups and lids pour forth from bubble tea/coffee shops, and sidewalks and parks are regularly mistaken as garbage disposal sites for these and other items, thousands of tons of needless waste is negatively impacting our environment.

Cindy, as much as you and your fellow youth under the age of 18 are correct, sadly, politicians won’t take you seriously because you cannot yet give them what they need: votes.

So, to you and all others discouraged by the serious inaction on the part of elected officials to address the environ-

Lastly, the Richmond Recycling Depot now accepts all snack and candy wrapper plastics as well as many other previously non-recyclable items. Start a program in your school to collect, audit and return these items and educate your friends and families to do the same.

I am currently seeing the positive results of this initiative where I work.

As the Officer in Charge of Richmond Detachment, I couldn’t be more proud of the work done every day by our officers, employees and dedicated volunteers to keep our community safe.

For a community as large as Richmond, having a dedicated traffic enforcement team and specialized collision investigation team is a necessity.

I am proud to say that we have both.

For our officers that work in these units and also our officers on patrol, their commitment and determination to making the roadways safer is always one of their top priorities.

Collectively, we share the same sentiment and passion towards road safety and will continue to strive to make our roadways as safe as possible.

Ticket for airborne elderly driver Megan Devlin RICHMOND NEWS

A ticket has been issued to the elderly driver of a white Acura SUV that mounted the curb, launched through a set of bushes and narrowly missed hitting a pedestrian, said Richmond RCMP. The incident happened just before 9 a.m. last Thursday in the Yaohan Centre parking lot.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Dennis Hwang said the 80-year-old driver “allegedly lost control of her vehicle” shortly after making a U-turn and collided with a grey Audi SUV. “The Acura then proceeded off-road over a curb and through a hedge,” Hwang added.

The octogenarian Richmond driver was sober at the time, RCMP said, and driver error is believed to be the primary factor in the collision.

Hwang said no injuries were reported, but that both cars were damaged.

Dash-cam footage from a car parked behind the hedge shows the white SUV bursting through the bushes while a pedestrian who was walking nearby sprints out of the way.

What appears to be leaked security footage from the mall also shows the collision from above.

Billy Tsang, a Richmond resident who shared video of the incident on Facebook, said watching it frightens him.

“As a father, this really scares me, because we go to Yaohan quite often,” he said.

He added that reckless driving is “becoming a regularity” in Richmond, and hopes city council takes steps to address the issue.

Alan Ho, the mall manager, said he is just glad nobody was badly hurt.

“It was lucky because it was early in the morning,” he said.

Moving forward, he has a message for drivers coming into the Yaohan parking lot: “Just be careful.”

A decision on the proposed Richmond Centre development, originally scheduled for Monday, was postponed to the next public hearing following the municipal election.

The proposal for the new development doesn’t require rezoning, only a change to the official community plan.

However, at the start of the meeting, May-

“The postponement is the result of legal advice that council has received. The legal advice was given in a closed meeting. That’s all I can tell you,” Brodie told the Richmond News.

The development plan laid out by the property’s owner Cadillac Fairview and developer SHAPE includes 12 buildings with 2,000 units. Plans also include new public streets, outdoor, retail and commercial spaces.

Independent council candidate John Roston takes issue with the fact that the development isn’t required to include rental units and that most of the units are expected to be sold as condos. Prior to Monday’s meeting, Roston pushed extensively for the discussion to be delayed until after the election and said he sent a letter to council.

“Why you are all claiming to be so much in favour of creating more rental housing and ignoring this golden opportunity, I said, is totally beyond me,” said Roston, explaining part of his letter to council. “Further, why are you doing it on the eve of an election?”

In May, the provincial government passed legislation allowing cities to zone properties for rental-only development.

In the summer, the City of Richmond said it was too early to know how it will address rental-only zones.

“This is an interesting opportunity for municipalities across the province...it’s very new. It’s not included at this stage in our work but we are reviewing it,” Barry Konkin, manager of policy planning for the city told the News in June.

Vancouver International Airport says people are welcome to smoke weed in its designated smoking areas post-legalization, but the Airport Authority is reminding travellers that crossing international borders with the plant is still not allowed regardless of where you’re going.

In an effort to mitigate these problematic fixtures, the report to the school board said some water fountains were replaced with bottle fill stations. All schools in the

district now have at least one bottle fill station, according to the report.

A daily and weekly flushing program was implemented to ensure “lead levels are within acceptable limits.”

Finally, a sticker program was introduced, allowing classrooms to have the option of placing “do not drink” stickers on classroom sinks.

“The district will continue mitigation and re-testing of existing and new water fixtures to ensure the safety of students and staff,” said the report to the school board.

“All water fixtures have been addressed through the mitigation strategy to ensure the safety of students and staff.”

In February 2017, the province required school districts to perform lead testing on at least one third of its schools annually.

Within nine months of that mandate, the Richmond School District says it completed testing of all water fixtures at all schools.

Health Canada notes lead is present in tap water as a result of “dissolution from natural sources or from household plumbing systems containing lead in pipes.”

Lead can damage the central nervous system, among other health concerns.

Richmond’s new, glass-walled pump station – which was more than three years in the making – has been awarded Project of the Year by the Public Works Association of B.C. Recognized for its “multi-faceted design,” the No. 2 Road North Drainage Pump Station has public art, open space and interpretive features that encourage public interaction. Its glass walls also provide the public with an unusual glimpse of its inner mechanics.

In 2016, the B.C. government announced funding for four drainage pump upgrades in the city. Located beneath the No. 2 Road Bridge, the pump services an area bound north-south by the dyke and Francis Road, and east-west by Gilbert Road and Railway Avenue.

The Project of the Year award is a provincewide competition where a city is awarded for a major project “deserving of special merit because of its unique features or complexity relative to the resources of the community.”

Award for sis who saved bro with CPR

On Tuesday, Fenton Paul and Margaret Paul got reacquainted with four first responders who were involved with their 911 call back in July.

Allan Booth, an advanced life support paramedic, was the first to introduce himself at Richmond’s north ambulance station.

“You probably don’t remember him,” Nahum Ip, district manager, joked.

That’s because the first time they met, Fenton didn’t have a pulse.

The 40-something Richmond resident had collapsed from a heart attack that evening.

His sister Margaret is credited with saving his life by performing CPR, and she was honoured at a ceremony at the ambulance station.

The siblings had been on after-dinner walk on July 5. As they dashed across No. 5 Road, Margaret remembers checking over her shoulder to see her older brother falling to the ground.

At first she thought Fenton had tripped, but when she ran over to him, he was unconscious and unresponsive. She checked for a pulse and found none.

“I was a little taken back and confused because he was so well all evening,” she said.

“I was angry and I was choked up. I thought,

my brother can’t die on the sidewalk.”

Margaret took her last CPR training course 20 years ago, back when she was trying to get into a nursing program. Though she was rusty, she moved her hands to Fenton’s chest and started compressions.

She phoned 911, her phone on speaker beside her. She looked frantically for house numbers to give responders an address, but was too far back to see any.

“It was terrifying,” she said. “I wasn’t sure whether he was alive or dead or whether my efforts would save him.”

On the other end of the line, emergency medical call taker Michelle Wand guided her. She told Margaret how many compressions to do, and to not give up.

“Just listening to her voice was like having a beacon of hope that, ok, I’m actually doing the right thing,” Margaret said.

Once paramedics arrived, they defibrillated Fenton and transported him to hospital.

“I don’t know what to say, other than thank you,” Fenton told his sister and the assembled first responders Tuesday.

They gathered to present Margaret with a Vital Link Award to recognize her efforts. It’s BC Emergency Health Services’ most prestigious community honour, awarded to bystanders who help paramedics save a cardiac arrest patient’s life.

Roof rack thief suspect arrested Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

Crime analysts are being credited for the capture of an alleged roof rack thief, who was arrested during a raid in an airport long-term parking lot on Sea Island.

At around 7 a.m. last Friday, Oct. 5, Richmond RCMP’s YVR detachment responded to a theft in progress at a long-term lot in the 7000 block of Grauer Road, north of Templeton Canada Line station.

According to police, the suspect was attempting to steal a roof rack or bike rack from one of the parked vehicles.

A coordinated effort by uniform and plainclothes officers from the Airport Crime Unit (ACU), along with assistance from the dog unit and YVR security, resulted in the arrest of a 54-year old male from Surrey.

A dark-coloured SUV with stolen licence plates was discovered in close proximity to the arrest containing a dismantled roof rack system, also believed to have been recently stolen.

The suspect is believed to have special-

ized in cargo/bike rack and accessory thefts, with a particular penchant for the Thule brand. Investigators are looking into other crimes that may be linked to this man.

Multiple charges, say police, are pending.

“We believe the term ‘surprised’ is accurate to describe our presence prior to the suspect being arrested” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“It had not gone unnoticed that the suspect has actively tried to avoid detection by authorities. Much credit has to go to our crime analysts.

“We are privileged to have some of the best crime analysts in the country. They are an essential part of our detachment and to our policing framework.

“They have been sifting through a lot of data and old case files province-wide in order to provide the best intelligence to officers in making this arrest.”

Mounties arrest ‘bike bandits’ Richmond RCMP have arrested two suspects in relation to an alleged break-and-enter at a residence near Maple and No. 2 roads.

At around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 Mounties responded to a disturbance where multiple suspects, wearing backpacks, allegedly fled the area on bikes before police arrived.

One suspect was seen near No. 3 Road and Penny Lane, appearing to change their clothing. The suspect, a 31-yearold Richmond man, crashed their bike and was arrested near Lucas Road.

A second suspect, a 31-year-old Richmond woman, was tracked to an area near Bowcock and Moore roads and was also arrested.

“Police are urging the community to be mindful of all suspicious persons including cyclists at odd hours during the day and night. Many criminals are prohibited from driving vehicles and therefore use bicycles as means to get from point A and B. They typically use mountain bikes and can found casing vehicles or residences for opportunities to commit crimes,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang in a press release.

Packing, getting to the airport, navigating check-in counters, passing through security, making flight connections — all these parts of travel can sometimes produce a mountain of anxiety, but a new initiative at Vancouver International Airport is hoping to ease some of this stress.

The Fly Calm initiative launched in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association on World Mental Health Day last week, provides travelers with tips and resources to ease their travel.

“We hear anecdotally that the travel experience can be stressful and obviously as we’re growing as an airport, we’re seeing more and more people,” said Jenny Duncan, director of marketing and communications for YVR. “We just really want to help travellers have the best experience possible.”

Duncan said the initiative will continue to develop with more resources being made available in the future.

Duncan added the airport also recommends travelers take the time to prepare for a trip by “being on time, planning your route (and) knowing where you’re going.”

Students reunite more than 75 years on

Thirty-seven alumni from Richmond High’s classes of 1943 through to 1948 recently made it out Quilchena Golf and Country Club for a reunion.

One of the organizers, Marjorie Bullinger, said the event was a success, although it wasn’t easy getting everyone together, especially the older classes.

Bullinger helped put together a bigger school reunion just over a year ago, when 60 or so alumni from the classes of 1945 through to 1950 gathered, as a group, for the first time at Quilchena.

Some of the former classmates from Richmond High, now Richmond Secondary, that day hadn’t seen each other for more than 70 years.

However, some members of the class of ’43 read of the reunion and got in touch with Bullinger and the organizers to make sure they were included this time around.

A leading hearing aid manufacturer will be releasing new technology that will break barriers in hearing aid acceptance and listening quality. Participants will be invited to test new technology in a busy restaurant setting.

KPU hosts open house

Eligible participants can purchase the hearing aids following the trial at a discounted rate if they wish.

This Friday, Richmond’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University is hosting an open house to showcase its class and career options.

High school students, mature students and the public are all invited to explore the campus and its programs.

Twenty professional artists of various disciplines have come to live in Richmond to help build up the rising arts and entertainment district in the north of the city.

Now Wyminga uses the open space for her rehearsals and her husband has converted their second bedroom into a music studio.

This is all part of an “arts village” project the City of Richmond has been planning over the past seven years, which provides affordable living and studio space for qualified artists in new developments near Bridgeport.

“I find as an artist, I need to have an environment around me that helps me to be calm and focused, but it’s very very hard in the city to find space. Most of the time, it’s just cluttered and chaotic,” said Wyminga.

“We really think that the arts are important for community vibrancy, social connection and for understanding the world,” said Jane Fernyhough, director of arts, culture and heritage for the city.

“We know that Richmond is not an inexpensive community to live in and artists have some of the lowest incomes. We want to be able to create an environment where artists can live and contribute to the city.”

Twenty brand new loft-style apartments were occupied late last year on the first floor of Concord Gardens Developmentat at Sexsmith and Patterson roads, including 18 850-sq.-ft. one-bedroom unit and two 1,100-sq.-ft. two-bedroom units.

Fernyhough said rents are under $1,000 and residents needed to submit their portfolio to prove they are professional artists, and to provide their financial records to qualify for affordable housing.

Current residents include a model, performing artists, photographers, painters and tattoo artists.

Shelby Wyminga, an actress who moved in last November with her husband, a musician, said this housing project is “too good to be true.

Artists now living together in Richmond and soaking up the community in Richmond since they moved in, and believe this will be reflected in their future work.

“Wherever you end up living or wherever you find yourself in life that’s going to come through in your art in different ways. That’s inevitable,” said Raymond.

“Richmond is definitely a really fascinating place culturally. I’m sure that stuff is gonna start to seep into my work.”

Fernyhough said 17 more live-work studios and six work-only studios will be available for artists to rent at a low cost in other new developments in the area.

“We are already starting to see the benefits of having artists here,” said Fernyhough.

“They have been participating in the community, in events and in creating events of their own.”

She said the artists will help fulfill the city’s broader vision to build an arts and entertainment district, which goes from Cambie North all the way through to Bridgeport.

“There will be a new community centre, a non-for profit art space, a new park, coffee shops, restaurants, and hopefully some music venue,” said Fernyhough.

“Having an affordable place to live in Metro Vancouver is really incredible, so that artists are able to actually practice their art rather than working in a job they hate, and doing what is essentially their profession on the side.”

“The vision is that it will be a very lively, vibrant, pedestrian friendly area with a lot of activities on the street.”

Tour shows off city’s Indigenous art Megan Devlin RICHMOND NEWS

As part of Richmond’s Culture Days this year, a Musqueam elder shared stories about his people’s art and culture while guiding a tour of Indigenous public art.

The free tour saw two bus-loads of people shepherded around the city with commentary by Jim Kew, Musqueam name kwes’kwestin.

“Six years before I was born, the potlach ban was repealed.

So information that I share on the tour would have put my parents or grandparents in jail,” he told the Richmond News.

Kew is a business owner and cultural representative for Musqueam who has previously worked as an archeological technician, a band councillor and an artist. He told the News he used to carve pieces of silver jewelry and spent several years working in the late Bill Reid’s studio.

“The canoe at YVR was created from the clay and plasters that I worked on in Bill’s shop,” he said.

The Richmond Oval was one stop on the tour for people to see the Buttress Runnels by Musqueam artist Susan Point.

Kew says he loves that Point included the great blue heron, or “smokwah” in henqeminum. According to stories, smokwah was a man who was reincarnated as a heron as a reward for his hard work.

“He represents values of industry and family in our culture,” Kew said.

Velkova was also impressed with its popularity. The two buses filled up quickly and registration had to close well in advance of the tour date. However, the city has brochures available for self-guided tours.

Exhibit celebrates arena history Two-dimensional prints cover 24 concrete pillars around building explores spectacle culture and media in her artwork.

A new community-based public art display is celebrating more than 50 years of history and the contributions of local athletes at Minoru Arena.

FANFARE is a two-dimensional artwork that has been printed on vinyl then installed on 24 concrete pillars inside Minoru Arena.

The works showcase the heritage and some cultural events that have taken place at the arena including the old Brighouse Park Racetrack and Holland Heineken House during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Produced by Vancouver-based artist, Faith Moosang, the materials for the display were collected from arena users, community members and the Richmond Archives.

Moosang, a multimedia artist, curator, writer and researcher, typically

She described the moment that her concepts became a large-scale 3D object as “thrilling.”

FANFARE is part of the City’s 2018 Engaging Artists in Community Public Arts Projects and was established in partnership with the Richmond Arenas Community Association.

These types of artistic projects aim to “support artists with socially-oriented practices and projects that can promote social connections, celebrate past accomplishments and tell stories to connect and inspire future generations.”

One of the professional actors involved, Richmond’s Lori Sherritt-Fleming, described her character as a fisherman’s wife, who gets a most unwelcome visit in the night from a “banshee.”

Haunting tales of a wailing banshee, the Wild Woman, ghost ships and even paranormal activity will be on tap this weekend at Britannia Heritage Shipyards.

“The visit is a sign that perhaps my husband is not coming back from the river,” Sherritt-Fleming told the Richmond News at the shipyards on Monday.

For the first time on Saturday night, the Historic Halloween Ghost Tour at the shipyards in Steveston will come alive with three ghostly, costumed characters, accompanied by a resident historian/narrator.

“The banshee is howling in her backyard. It’s a Celtic spirit that would appear as a form of part cat, part woman and howl and howl for someone that was about to pass. It’s kind of a terrifying prospect really.”

For one night only, they will take you on a family-friendly, hour-long tour through the shipyards, beguiling the audience with eery recounting of ghosts of Britannia’s past, folklore, legend and actual sightings.

Fellow actor Shelly MacDonald will play the role of the “Mi’kmaq,” an Indigenous “storyteller” of First Nations and Scottish ancestory.

and death rituals of all the different cultures that have lived here.”

The tour is being hosted by Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site and Public Art and Artists Rendering Tales Collective Inc. (ARTCi).

Good news is on the horizon for youth requiring care specific to their needs.

Richmond will become home to a new youth centre called Foundry Richmond that will help to address gaps in care and transform access to health and social services for youth and families.

Set to open next year, a new centre for adult and older adult care in the community will also become a “one-stop” shop, offering care needs assessments, care planning, specialty service consultations, and short-term treatment for adults and older such as:

The need is urgent. Richmond’s youth population, age 13-24, totals 33,700. As in many other locations in B.C. and Canada, an alarming number of Richmond youth—over 40 percent—do not receive the primary medical care or the mental health and substance use services they need, frequently facing many barriers, including a confusing patchwork system with unintegrated services spread across many locations.

• Facilities to support people with chronic diseases, complex medical needs and mental health and substance use services.

Important planning work is under way right now for acute care patients, those receiving care in a hospital setting for serious health issues. This year on March 29, the Province announced it had approved the Concept Plan for a new Acute Care Tower for Richmond, and Vancouver Coastal Health Richmond leaders are now working on the Business Plan for a new Acute Care Tower at Richmond Hospital, one of our community’s greatest needs.

Foundry Richmond, when officially opened next year, will transform health and social services for youth and families. By bringing together primary care, public health, mental health and substance use services in a “onestop” shop, Foundry Richmond will support youth and their families with easy and faster access to care—all under one roof for the very first time.

• Rehabilitation space to support clients pre and post-surgery and those with chronic conditions or diseases.

• Home health services such as nursing, case management, occupational therapy and physical therapy as well as palliative care services

One of the early results of planning was the need to provide care for Richmond’s growing number of seniors, resulting in a new unit for Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE). Richmond has the fastest growing population of seniors in the province of B.C. with an average increase of 7 percent year over year resulting in 70 percent of in-patients being over the age of 70 at Richmond Hospital. The new ACE unit includes 32 to 35 beds at the hospital with a multidisciplinary care team of nurses, a nurse practitioner, a geriatrician, five general internal medicine physicians, a geriatric psychiatrist, as well as increased physiotherapist, occupational therapist, and social worker support.

Do some of the labour yourself. Homeowners willing to swing a hammer also can stretch their home improvement dollars. For example, the home improvement resource This Old House notes that homeowners willing to do their own demolition before the contractors arrive can save substantial amounts of

money. A professional contractor may charge $1,000 to demo a 200-square-foot deck, but homeowners who demo their own decks may spend only $450 (for the dumpster rental and parking permit).

Hire a consultant. The DIY movement is incredibly popular. Homeowners with DIY experience may be able to complete projects on their own with consultation from professional contractors. Some contractors may not offer consulting services, however. The consultation route, which typically requires paying licensed contractors hourly fees to offer guidance, should be considered by homeowners with legitimate DIY skills, for whom this option can be a great way to save money.

Schedule renovations during homeownerfriendly times of year. Summer and fall tend to be contractors’ busy seasons, and homeowners will likely pay more for projects during this time of year. Yip wanted to encourage more people to enter next year’s contest, because having experienced judges provide feedback can help photographers improve their technique.

Photographers from Canada, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia took home medals. This year’s Best in Show award went to photographer Lori Metcalfe from Ontario for her image “Wolf Pack Hierarchy – There Can Only Be One Alpha.”

This year’s festival was held at VanDusen Botanical Garden on Sept. 22, and afterwards all the photographs were moved to Aberdeen Centre where they’ll be on displayin the atrium until Dec. 31and upstairs after that.

Young pianist Ranfei Wang raised $6,350 for the Richmond Hospital Foundation at his charity piano concert at Gateway Theatre last Saturday.

Wang is a Grade 12 student from Burnaby High, whose mom works at Richmond Hospital.

“I hoped to make a contribution to the community with the skills I have, which is playing the piano,” said Wang to the Richmond News.

“And I thought raising funds for my mom’s work place is a great thing to do.”

Late last month, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society welcomed its new executive director, Stephanie Halapija.

From Ontario, Halapija moved to B.C. to become director of The Nisga’a Museum in Laxgalts’ap, near Terrace.

She has also contributed to exhibitions at the Museum of Anthropology, the Canadian Museum of History, the British Museum and the Bill Reid Gallery and has conducted field work in the Middle East, Canada and Europe.

Now, Halapija says she’s looking forward to “solidifying” the impact that the cannery has in the community and throughout B.C. “I love the power of building connections and true authentic visitor experiences and to do so on the scope of the Cannery’s audience is exhilarating,” Halapija said in an emailed statement.

Standing on the busy Steveston pier, shielding her eyes from the bright afternoon sun two days before cannabis legalization, Dina Morgan describes her dream of opening a deli shop selling cannabis-infused eats in the historic neighbourhood.

She envisions it nestled between other family-owned businesses a couple of blocks back from the water. She wants it to be the “Whole Foods of cannabis,” selling gourmet carry-out groceries and hosting cooking classes, teaching people how to bring weed into the kitchen in a safe and tasty way.

“I’m from Chicago, and I know what good carry-up deli food is,” she told the Richmond News. “There is nothing comparable here in Richmond.”

She’s planning sophisticated fare, not pot brownies that taste more like skunk than chocolate. Think dulce de leche with just a hint of cannabis to give it a nutty flavour. Her recipe goes nicely homemade with chai, she added.

“If you pour a wine, you’re supposed to look for all the different things. With cannabis it’s the same thing. You don’t want something hairy and pungent and yucky,” she said.

There are several council hopefuls who support cannabis retail, and she hopes current council’s ban on pot boutiques will lift so she can open her store in the community that she loves. “[We] want to keep local people here, bring local job opportunities and local tax benefits,” Morgan said. “Why should Vancouver get my tax money when my kids go to school here in Steveston?”

But if Richmond keeps its doors closed to cannabis, opening in Vancouver is what she’ll have to do.

Parents looking for answers on what cannabis legalization means for their kids were invited to a panel discussion at Cambie secondary on Wednesday evening for tips on opening a dialogue with teens to help them avoid developing problem substance use.

The event, Let’s Talk Cannabis Legalization, was being hosted by the Richmond Addictions Services Society (RAAS) and organizers said they wanted to engage residents in discussion about changing drug laws.

“I think a lot of parents are worrying about what’s going to happen with legalization. They think the world will change a lot and their kids will be susceptible,” said Clarence Chan, a RASS counsellor with more than 20 years of experience working with youth in Richmond.

He said it’s important to understand why kids use drugs like cannabis, adding it usually comes down to three reasons: curiosity, peer influence or stress.

Of those, stress is the reason that worries him.

He says addressing the root cause of their stress and ensuring a teen has good relationships with parents, friends and a positive outlook on school can help them build resilience and be less tempted to use cannabis.

That said, Chan said parents should stay calm if they do discover their child has tried smoking weed.

“My advice for parents is don’t panic and don’t judge,” he said.

“Judgement doesn’t help with open conversation. And it doesn’t help youth make a better choice in the future.”

Kristina Jenei, a research assistant at the Centre for Substance Use Research who was set to speak at the event, told the Richmond News healthy relationships are a great way to build resilience in teens.

She thinks drug education should shift away from the current fear-based model and be more integrated into the curriculum.

Even though police or specialized educators can pump kids full of facts about the risks of doing drugs, kids will still see the pro-social side of cannabis use if their friends have fun smoking weed.

She thinks a more balanced approach that allows kids to evaluate the benefits and risks associated with drug use is a more sound approach.

“We’ve never been a drug free society nor will we ever be,” she said.

“We want to give kids the tools to navigate these decisions.”

She also wants to remind parents that it’s more than just drugs that are dangerous for kids.

“The harm from drugs is more related to who uses and in what context and how much,” she said.

Looking at research, Jenei said she’s comforted to know that most youth report using cannabis in order to have fun and explore.

“That category of use is associated with the least amount of harm and the least amount of repeated, regular use.”

On the other hand, using drugs in order to cope with life stressors is associated with more problematic patterns of use.

Both speakers also wanted to remind parents that the legal age limit to purchase and possess cannabis in B.C. is 19.

That means that nothing changed for teens on legalization day.

Three Richmond schools have been recognized for their commitment to helping butterflies, bees and other pollinators.

The David Suzuki Foundation named A.R. MacNeill Secondary, Matthew McNair Secondary and Daniel Woodward Elementary official Butterflyway schools at a ceremony Sept. 30.

“Getting them out there and watching bees coming to the plants they planted, it’s like oh wow I get it,” she said.

“It’s like, I did this and I can have an impact.”

In Richmond, black and yellow swallowtail butterflies are common, and so are white cabbage moths. The Woodward garden also gets the occasional painted lady, which kids often mistake for East Coast monarch butterflies.

The gardens help the insects find shelter and food, which helps humans because the bugs go on to pollinate our food crops.

Steveston Buddhist Temple marks 90th part of the cultural mosaic of the village of Steveston.

Over the course of its 90-year history, the Steveston Buddhist Temple has served primarily as a religious centre where the congregation have gathered for regular Sunday services as well as for other religious functions such as funerals, weddings and memorial services.

The Steveston Buddhist Temple will celebrate its 90th Anniversary this weekend with a commemorative anniversary service, a public lecture on Buddhism and a banquet.

The celebration will kick off with a public lecture on Saturday, Oct. 20. It will be given by guest speaker Dr. Jeff Wilson, author of the book Buddhism of the Heart: Reflections on Shin Buddhism and Inner Togetherness, who is also a Religious Studies professor at the University of Waterloo.

“Dr. Wilson will give a presentation introducing Shin Buddhism in a way that is accessible to everyone,” the temple said in a press release.

The public is also welcome to attend the 90th anniversary commemorative service at the temple at 4360 Garry Street on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 10:30 a.m.

As part of the celebration, the temple will also hold a 90th anniversary banquet Saturday night for people who have purchased tickets.

Photo submitted built in 1928 in the heart of the village of Steveston and services were observed there until the outbreak of the Second World War, when Japanese-Canadians were forcibly removed from the West Coast by the Canadian government.

Following the war, in 1949 the second Steveston Buddhist Temple was established when the congregation returned to

the coast and purchased the former Japanese Kindergarten building located just west of the corner of Chatham Street and No. 1 Road.

The temple has also opened its doors to the public and has performed activities including establishing the first Japanese language classes in Steveston over 50 years ago, holding weekly public Bingo, music concerts, children’s play groups, and many bazaars and festivals, such as the annual Obon Festival that attracts upwards of 1000 visitors every summer.

“Looking to the future, the Steveston Buddhist Temple is in the process of building an independent seniors housing complex which will be open to the public,” said the press release.

In 1962, a five-acre property was purchased on Garry St. and a new temple was erected in the fall of 1963.

“With the building of the new structure, we look forward to continuing being an important part of the Steveston community for years to come.”

Building dreams in South Africa Hugh Boyd students had ‘life-changing’ experience Daisy Xiong RICHMOND NEWS

There are many things that can be done in two weeks, for example, travelling to a village in South Africa and building a classroom for local students.

That’s what 11 Hugh Boyd students and alumni did last summer, through the Initiative Program organized by the school and Rotary Club of Richmond Sunset.

Since 2006, the program has sent a number of students to help build a daycare in Lanseria in South Africa, a township where many people are living in poverty — earning an average income of around $50 a month.

“We started the program because we wanted to help our kids here to be a global citizens, and to teach our children to be more compassionate and understanding,” said Magdalen Leung, foundation chair of Rotary Club of Richmond Sunset.

In previous years, the program has helped people there build a kitchen, a gym, a day care centre, two ‘food tunnels’ to grow vegetables, and repair a playground.

“This year, our mission was to renovate a container for the after-school care program that accommodates 30 high-school students. They come to get help with homework,” said Leung.

After one year of preparation and raising funds, the students set out to South Africa in August and spent the next two weeks turning the large container, donated by a local organizer, into a cozy classroom.

They furnished the container with wooden walls, floors, desks and chairs, installed electricity, and painted colourful pictures outside.

Hugh Boyd student Alicia Zhang, 16, designed the exterior pictures, which include astronauts, hot-air balloons, animals and a Canadian flag, with the quote, “I live in a world where dreams come true.”

“I want them to dream big while they are sitting inside the container, said Alicia.

“I want them to reach their goals and realise what’s outside in the wider world and explore all the options, and to be motivated to continue studying.”

Alicia said she chose the bright colours for the painting to form a contrast with the surrounding environment, which is “generally dull.”

“It’s very dry there, so there is a lot of yellow and brown.

I wanted something to pop up, to stick out when you look around. Those colours pop out in a way that is attractive but not distracting,” she explained.

UBC student and Hugh Boyd alumni Kyle Gomes was the photographer on the trip. He had also been on the trip when he was in Grade 9.

“The initial draw for me to take part in the program was the ability to make a difference. When you are in high school, a lot of the time you feel that there is not much you can do to actually make a difference,” said Gomes.

“It was so amazing when we came back, we had such a great appreciation of what we have here in Canada.

“We really saw the economic difference in lives between the kids here and the kids in South Africa. That’s in addition to the work we did there.”

Alicia said the poverty there was almost beyond imagination — children might not get regular meals, their clothes are torn, and families squeeze into tiny homemade constructions of metal or wood, without water or electricity.

“You see this kind of situation on TV or in the media, but when you experience it first hand, it’s definitely a life-changing experience,” said Alicia.

“You just feel almost sad in a way, that you have so much, while they are still living their lives happily with so little. It really puts your life in a different perspective.”

Gomes said the smiles on those children’s faces are “really powerful.”

“That really adds to the appreciation. Some kids here are not happy because they don’t get certain toys. They had little, but they are also happy,” said Gomes.

For Alicia, the highlight of the trip was when the team took an hour out of their busy schedule to visit a preschool in the area and play with the children.

“They were having the time of their lives, and we were having the time of our lives.The classroom we built is going to stay there for a very long time, and the memory is going to stay with me,” she said.

No reins, no stirrups, no problem In his third lesson, News reporter Alan Campbell learned how to ride one-handed, and ‘bridging the reins,’ as he shows in this photo while riding Chance this week.

In a bid to strike something off his bucket list, reporter Alan Campbell enlisted the help of Yolanda Blommers, of Blue Meadow Farm, to learn how to ride a horse. Over the next few weeks at her riding school, Blommers will use her 30 plus years of expertise to get Campbell competent in the saddle.

With the reins tied in a knot and out of reach, it was time to take my feet out of the stirrups and put my hands on my hips.

I think it’s important to note I was on top of a moving horse.

Granted, the horse, Chance, only got as “fast” as a trot.

But when you’ve no reins to hold onto and no stirrups to anchor your weight, all while going around in circles, it feels like you could tip out of the saddle and break bones at any given second — which is what I suspect some readers (and definitely my mates) are waiting/wanting to happen.

Indeed, there was nothing but the grace of God - and a vicelike grip with my thighs - keeping me from going UR (unseated rider in horse racing parlance).

I admit there were a couple of baby wobbles from side to side, where it had the potential to produce the goods for the aforementioned “fan” base.

But once Yolanda told me to slightly twist my torso inwards, it all but neutralized the wobbles. Sorry, folks, no UR today.

Feet back in the stirrups, reins untied and back in the hands and it was like driving a Range Rover with new tires, when all you’ve known is a Hyundai Accent with balding, all-seasons.

OK, I may have exaggerated the transition for effect, but going from hanging on for your life to being in total control is

quite a leap in a few seconds for a novice rider.

Truth be told, Yolanda, via the lunge line, had it all under control during these “lunge lessons,” which she said are for balance and used for beginner to advanced riders to stay centred and improve straightness.

And I was never more than one frantic grab of the saddle pommel away from rescuing myself.

Earlier in the lesson, we went over a few of the basics again to warm me up and progressed into riding one-handed, while “bridging” the reins with the other.

Yolanda got me into the two-point, “show-jumping” position; butt off saddle during the trot (without posting), grabbing a bit of Chance’s mane and using my knees to balance the weight.

And being a horse racing fan, I could visualize, for a split second, attacking a jump. OK, I may have taken that too far.

Eric Lamaze I am not, and never will be. But one can dream.

Prior to the lesson, I had asked my more experienced equine fanatic, Megan, how to keep the horse moving while I was riding and trying to perfect the various techniques being taught by Yolanda.

Suffice to say, if you take your foot off the gas in a car, it is going to slow down and stop at some point.

With a horse, as I’ve learned, the regression to a halt tends to happen a lot quicker than when driving.

Both Megan and Yolanda explained that the gas pedal is replaced by your heels and calves. Chance, being a seasoned lesson horse, is always waiting for the pedal being pressed.

Remembering to press it, however, while trying to stay upright, posting, keeping your heels down, eyes front and hands positioned correctly etc. is easier said than done.

But it feels like I’m getting better?

The plan is to record a short video next week, so everyone can judge for themselves how good, or bad, I am.

Let’s hope, no matter how many of mates’ fingers are crossed, it won’t be footage of me rolling around in the dirt.

Sitting during the trot and then posting the trot (motioning hips back and forth to the horse’s stride) with the now requisite sight of my delicates slamming into the saddle pommel.

Should I be wearing protection? It sure feels like it, but I’m told that it’s not a practise peculiar to horse riding. It certainly focuses the mind to get the posting correct!

Developer asks to buy city land Daisy Xiong RICHMOND NEWS

A spokesperson for the City of Richmond said he cannot comment on whether council approved the sale of a piece of city land in the city centre to a developer.

The land was subject to a rezoning application for three residential towers and an office building at No. 3 and Lansdowne roads, as part of the new “Lansdowne Village.”

A city report states that, “the applicant proposes to buy the city lot at 5,671 No.3 Road to add to the development site…the area of the city lot is approximately 21,739 sq. ft.”

The proposal also notes that if the purchase of the city lot is approved by council, the development will be adjacent to a new linear park along the north side of Lansdowne Road, “to provide for an enhanced public realm connection between the Garden City Lands and the Richmond Oval.”

When the Richmond News asked whether council has approved the sale of the city land to the developer, Ted Townsend, spokesperson for the City of Richmond said he can’t comment.

“As land matters are normally dealt with in a closed council, I can’t comment anymore on the status of 5671 No.3 Road beyond what was noted in the rezoning application,” said Townsend.

The piece of land owned by the City of Richmond was home to Richmond Centre for Disabilities, which announced in February it was looking for a new home as its landlord sought to rezone the building.

tion, or are planning to, has given rise to speculation that the city may sell the land for the proposed “Lansdowne Village.”

Townsend said the rezoning application was granted a third reading at a public hearing in September. The development permit for the project is currently under staff review.

After “Brighouse Village” proposed more than 3,000 new apartments near Canada Line Brighouse Station, “Lansdowne Village” in Richmond’s city centre is now underway.

Two rezoning proposals were submitted to the City of Richmond in June and have been granted third reading.

The development will include 11 towers with 1169 condo units in total, across the street from Lansdowne Centre between Alderbridge Way and Lansdowne Road.

One development, proposed at the intersection of No. 3 and Lansdowne roads, contains three residential towers and an office building.

This development will include 345 residential units including 20 affordable housing units, and a 557 square foot on-site community facility.

Both of the applicants proposed to creating two roads around the development or widening city lanes, and building a wider off-street bike lane that is separated from vehicular traffic.

The developers will also construct a low carbon utility energy source, which will be transferred to the City at no cost.

“For example, the proposal (for Lansdowne Centre redevelopment) includes the creation of a 53,500 square foot city amenity space that will be paid for by the developer,” said Townsend.

“The significant re-development occurring along the west side of No. 3 Road between Lansdowne and Alderbridge will provide further public amenities and infrastructure benefits.”

Townsend said the city has completed some transportation improvements in the area and “further improvements and upgrades through Lansdowne Village and the broader city centre will also occur as other redevelopment in the area proceeds.”

Arjun Badh has taken the next chapter of his hockey career to Burnaby Mountain.

The 21-year-old Richmond native had a leading role in his hometown Sockeyes capturing last spring’s Cyclone Taylor Cup.

So far, Coletta has been impressed with Badh’s preparation and his work rate.

Badh concluded his Pacific Junior Hockey League career with his most productive season — finishing second in team scoring with 49 points in 44 games, including 21 goals as an alternate captain.

He added 14 more in as many playoff games in helping the Sockeyes win their sixth provincial title in franchise history.

“Arjun did a great job coming into camp ready to compete, something all our forwards will have to do this season. He is a big body that can really get up and down the ice and we expect him to bring a physical element to our lineup.”

Badh didn’t have look far to find some familiar faces.

His impressive play in the tournament caught the eye of Simon Fraser University head coach Mark Coletta. Badh signed his letter of intent soon after and enrolled in SFU’s criminology program.

The Clan are part of the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League that also includes Selkirk College, Trinity Western, UVic and Vancouver Island University.

SFU opens its regular season schedule with a two-game series this weekend against Selkirk in Castlegar.

It comes after a busy exhibition schedule that included a trip to Alaska to take on a couple of NCAA Division One schools — Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The adjustment has been a significant one for Badh who has gone from one of

There will be some hometown flavour in the line-up when the Vancouver Dragons open their inaugural season in the American Basketball Association next month at the Richmond Olympic Oval against Las Vegas.

The club has signed 6-foot-6 guard/swingman Elliot Mason who enjoyed an outstanding high school career at JN Burnett before a decorated collegiate career with the Langara Falcons.

The 25-year-old joins the Dragons from the Niagara Red Lions of the NBL Canada.

He helped the Falcons win the national

championship in 2014 and back-to-back PacWest titles (2013-14). Mason was a Pac West First Team All-Star in his final season three years ago after being a three-time Second Team All-Star.

He ranks 12th in PacWest all-time career points with 1112 and 18th in assists with 220 in 85 career games. His signing was highly recommended by his former Langara coach Paul Eberhardt.

This past summer, Mason earned MVP honours in helping the X-Falcons capture the 33rd Dolphin Classic — the popular 4-on-4 outdoor tournament held at South Arm Park.

The Dragons host Las Vegas on Nov. 3 at the Oval. They are part of the ABA Far West Division with the hopes of making it to St. Louis next March for the ABA Elite Eight Championships.

Less dramatic is the route Dunfee is taking each day to complete his 25K.

Richmondite Evan Dunfee may be an Olympic race walker, but he moves faster than many people can run.

“It totally depends on where I have to go that day,” he added.

He’s raised more than $4,500 of his $25,000 goal so far, but is getting an assist from the 25 local schools on his speaking tour, where he’s telling his story, talking about goal-setting, KidSport and about sport in general.

Stretching his wiry frame and pumped up, Dunfee was already two kilometres into his daily diet of 25K, a routine that he’s 17 days into, with another eight to go.

“The goal of $25,000 was optimistic, but with the help of the schools, you never know,” he said.

“Many of (the schools) are in Richmond.

Kingswood students are trying to raise $1,000 so they can pie their principal. That would be nice.”

It’s all part his bid to walk 25K a day for 25 consecutive days to raise $25,000 for KidSport – which is celebrating its 25th anniversary – seeking $25 donations and giving motivational talks at 25 local schools. Hopefully, you see the thread.

We want to make it absolutely clear that we legacy farmers oppose construction of mega homes on farmland in Richmond; however, we support and endorse the decision to limit the size of homes to 10,764 square feet (1,000 square meters) taken by Councillors:

We thank them and appreciate that they listened and understood the important contributions we make to our community and the negative financial impact that further restrictions would put on our lands as we need to re-invest every year to have our farms continue to be viable.
