Well, I didn’t see that coming — talking about Saturday’s civic election, of course.

Had a couple of our incumbents stepped down, I would have predicted (with 20/20 hindsight) Kelly Greene, Michael Wolfe or perhaps Andy Hobbs would have filled their shoes, and not necessarily in that order. But to unseat a sitting councillor as Greene and Wolfe have just done, is quite another matter.

So now the RCA/RITE coalition has four of the eight seats on council, with the other four coming from Richmond Community Coalition (Chak Au), Richmond First (Bill McNulty and Linda McPhail) and independent (Alexa Loo). Will we see radically different outcomes, or at least more robust debate?

Will there be some swing votes, if so, who would they be?

What will be the priorities?

These were some of the musings going on in the Richmond News boardroom as I spent election night with one of this city’s most notable political couples, Greg and Evelina Halsey-Brandt.

Greg was a Richmond city councillor in the 1980s, mayor of Richmond in the 1990s and MLA in the early 2000s, then back as a councillor for one last term before retiring from politics for good. Evelina was a city councillor through the 1990s and 2000s before retiring along with her husband prior to the 2014 election.

Who better to sit and chat civic politics with while watching the results roll in — however slowly. (See page 8 for what happened there.)

I understand in the Halsey-Brandt household, a scotch is in order on election night, win or lose. Unfortunately, being at the office, we had to settle for water-only, but that didn’t seem to dampen spirits as the pair offered insight and analysis into the various compaigns and issues at city hall.

Another thing you should know for all this to make sense, is that the Richmond News staff has gotten decidedly younger in the past year — young and more social media savvy. So, when we were planning our coverage, it was suggested we do Facebook Live posts throughout the night.

Being easily pressured, I agreed and suddenly we were planning scripts, mapping out the itinerary and booking guests (that would be the amenable Halsey-Brandts) to sit in our “studio” while commenting live on our Facebook page.

If you happened to tune in, and a surprisingly good number of you did, you would have also seen our intrepid reporters, providing live updates from the various election night parties.

Granted, we’re not a TV studio and there were some glitches, but I like to think that was part of the charm.

Anyway, it was a fun night in terms of coverage, even if we were here until 2 a.m. And it was great to see a record amount of traffic on our website. But enough about us. The moment belongs to the candidates — winners and losers.

It’s a brave thing to put your name forward in the name of public service and for that we owe you deep gratitude.

It’s also appropriate to acknowledge and to thank Ken Johnston and Derek Dang for their years of service to our city. I’ve known both for decades and I’ve known Derek and his family for 45 years. I’ve witnessed both men listen to others while considering difficult issues. In deliberations, they’ve exercised empathy, compassion, intelligence and common sense and made their decisions in good faith to the very best of their substantial abilities.

I want to thank the many volunteers who have helped so much in this campaign.

I will continue to support that growth and do what I can to bring about positive change, prosperity and harmony to our community.

And I thank the residents of Richmond, who voted for me with the hope that I would become their mayor.

The City of Richmond said a delay in election results on the night of Oct. 20 was caused by a corrupted memory stick used in one of the voting machines.

Incumbent Malcolm Brodie is poised to become Richmond’s longest-serving mayor after winning a seventh term Saturday night.

Brodie claimed an easy victory over five other candidates, drawing over 30,000 votes, nearly four times as many as runnerup Roy Sakata.

In a speech delivered when half of the votes had been counted, Brodie thanked a crowd of roughly one hundred constituents gathered at the Four Points Sheraton Airport Hotel for their continued support and

“The Richmond of the future is going to be even stronger and better with a higher quality of life,” said Brodie, who has held his seat since 2001.

“It will be a great place for all of us, no matter your ethnic origin, your religion, your particular viewpoints, or your culture.”

Supporters were in high spirits as early results suggested an easy win for the incumbent.

“The city of Richmond has very solid support for the mayor,” said Cliff Cheng, longtime Brodie supporter.

“He should be able to lead Richmond to a better future. I’m so glad that he won again.”

While all the polling stations closed at 8 p.m. on election day, the results didn’t start rolling in until after 9 p.m., and it wasn’t until after midnight when all the results were released.

“Each voting machine has a memory stick where the votes are recorded on,” said Ted Townsend, City of Richmond spokesman.

“All the memory sticks were brought to City Hall once the polls had closed, and city staff started to run them using the vote counting process, beginning with votes cast in advance.”

However, when staff tried to count the votes for the Oct. 6 advance poll, a memory stick was not working.

“We tried all different ways but nothing worked. That caused an initial delay,” said Townsend.

Staff then began counting other votes, leaving the one uncounted station until the end.

“In the end, we had to retain all the voting ballots, almost 2,000, and re-put them back into the voting machine so they could be recalculated,” said Townsend.

“Feeding 2,000 ballots back through the machines is a time-consuming process.”

But, Townsend added, “all votes were counted. And we always have the paper ballots as a backup.”

City Board Amendment to the Consolidated 5 Year Financial Plan (2018-2022) Bylaw No. 9800 The Community Charter requires that Council adopt a 5 Year Financial Plan each year prior to the adoption of the Annual Property Tax Rates Bylaw. The Community Charter also allows for amendments to the 5 Year Financial Plan.

There were jubilant scenes at the Richmond Curling Club late Saturday night as both the RCA and RITE slates celebrated having two incumbents and two rookies elected to city council.

RCA’s Kelly Greene and RITE’s Michael Wolfe both comfortably won seats on council, with the latter having his 10th attempt at being elected (four shots at city council, one at mayor and trustee and the rest at MLA and MP).

RCA’s incumbent and veteran Harold Steves won a seat on council once more, while fellow RITE councillor, Carol Day, topped the polls with an impressive 20,871 votes.

The story of the night at the curling club, however, was school teacher Wolfe finally getting the nod from the public.

With every passing polling station being reported, Wolfe’s lead over closest challengers Alexa Loo and Derek Dang grew, provoking loud cheers throughout the curling club’s bar.

And, through no fault of his own, he may now be the man to finally convince 81-yearold Steves – who was first elected in 1969 – to retire at the end of the coming term.

“I would never wish that, but I’m very honoured that he would think that way,” Wolfe told the News Saturday night.

Asked how he felt about getting elected at his 10th time of asking, Wolfe said that it “feels like all the hard work and persistent has paid off…and the electorate has spoken.

“We’re going to be the public’s servants, not the developer’s servants. The Wolfe is knocking on the door and now he’s coming in.

“I’m overwhelmed that people have the confidence in me for the next four years.”

Steves, meanwhile, told the News that, when he gave a speech at Steveston last week, he told his wife, Cathy, that he thought it would be his last of a political nature.

“I’m so pleased to see Michael Wolfe get on, as I’ve hoping he would for a long time,” he added.

“And Kelly Greene, who’s also good on environmental issues, that’s great as well, along with Carol Day. “I will keep fighting for the issues that matter for the next four years, but maybe I can now step back and finally look forward to retirement.”

When results started rolling in just after 9 p.m., it was clear incumbents Linda McPhail and Bill McNulty would hold on to their seats. But things were dicier for incumbent Derek Dang, who trailed behind Alexa Loo by just 97 votes by the end of the night.

Dang declined an interview with the Richmond News on his way out.

His running-mate, Linda McPhail, said she had “mixed feelings,” since she’s sad that more members of her team won’t be joining her on council this time around.

But she’s still looking forward to her third term.

Incumbent councillor Ken Johnston lost his seat, but his incumbent running-mate from the Richmond Community Coalition (RCC) Chak Au celebrated yet another victory.

It is rare for an incumbent to lose a seat, Howard said, and he believes that Johnston’s vote to maintain the status quo of house sizes on farmland was a factor in the loss.

Johnston came 12th in this year’s election.

He left the gathering of RCC candidates and their supporters halfway into Saturday night when his vote count was hanging around 11th place.

“It is something the leftists picked up on — this whole issue of ‘monster homes’...I think that played a role, for sure,” said Howard.

Rob Howard, president of the RCC, told the Richmond News that Johnston “wasn’t well and went home.”

“He worked hard, very hard, and it was a long week. He is going home to take a little time, be with his family and recuperate,” said

He said he appreciates people’s recognition of him and the work he has done, and he believes this was reflected in the high number of votes.

The two incumbent trustees who led the charge to enact a policy regarding SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) topped the polls in Saturday’s civic election.

Ken Hamaguchi led the way with 17,196 votes and Sandra Nixon took 16,567 votes.

“I was curious to see how strong the support was and was very pleased to see voters send a message that they support SOGI,” Hamaguchi said.

In the months leading up to the election, one group of candidates, including Hamaguchi and Nixon, formed the Richmond Education Party (REP), which supports the policy, while another group formed the Parents’ Slate, which opposes it.

“He should be up there [among the trustees],” she said. “He’s worked really hard for the district.”

Hamaguchi, despite being on a different slate, echoed Sargent’s disappointment with losing Yung.

“He was a very good chair, but I think he got caught in the whole SOGI thing. He had a lot of pressure on him to take a strong stance against it, yet he supported it. He didn’t get the anti-SOGI vote but, because of perception, he may have lost some of the pro-SOGI people. It’s really too bad.”

Although Yung lost, Norm Goldstein squeezed in, meaning Richmond First will still have two sitting on the school board.

Watching to see whether Goldstein would beat out Richmond Education Party’s Karina Reid was a nail-biting affair. He was ahead by only 70 votes when the second-to-last ballot box was being counted.

At 35 per cent, the turnout rate for the 2018 Richmond municipal election was the highest since 1993, and three per cent higher than 2014.

Richmond had a population of 198,309 in the 2016 census, and of this, 132,819 were eligible voters, according to Civic Info BC data. This means the 45,873 ballots cast represents 35 per cent of all eligible voters.

“We are pleased that we had a little bit of increased turnout, but of course we’d always like to see numbers even higher,” said Ted Townsend, City of Richmond spokesperson.

Greg Halsey-Brandt, mayor of Richmond from 1990 to 2001 and political commentator, said he believes a few controversial issues discussed in Richmond got more people out voting.

“I think the SOGI issue got more people out (to vote) for the school board, the ‘mega houses’ on the Agricultural Land Reserve and issues of affordable housing all got more people out voting for council.

“And more immigrants from Asia are here for longer; more have become Canadian citizens, so more and more of them can vote. It’s a lot of people.”

He added that contentious mayoral races in cities such as Vancouver, Surrey and Burnaby made more people aware of the municipal elections, in general, which helped contribute to Richmond’s better turnout.

Records were also set on the number of votes the mayor and certain councillors received in Richmond.

Incumbent Mayor Malcolm Brodie received 30,452 votes this year, which is a 10 per cent increase over 2014 and 64 per cent of the total number of votes cast for mayor.

Incumbent councillor Carol Day topped the charts with 20,871 votes, which is 3,454 more than the largest number of votes received in 2014 by Coun. Bill McNulty.

Meanwhile, advance voting numbers this year in Richmond were up about 23 per cent compared to 2014, with more than 36,000 votes cast at advance polling stations.

A wildlife charity is asking people to be careful when setting animal traps, after a young raccoon was found alive and hanging from a fence in central Richmond.

The raccoon was found in an awful state on Jaskow Gate, close to Francis Road and Railway Avenue, last Tuesday morning by a City of Richmond worker.

The worker immediately contacted his supervisor who, in turn, alerted the Critter Care Wildlife Society and the RCMP. Within an hour or so, the raccoon was taken down but was in such a bad condition that it had to be euthanized.

Now the Vancouver-based non-profit FurBearers is calling on people having issues with wildlife to contact a reputable humane wildlife removal company, instead of setting their own traps.

“The trap was clearly on the young raccoon for some time, and the only thing holding his foot onto his body was skin,” said Adrian Nelson, of The Fur-Bearers.

“He had clearly tried to escape from the trap with traumatic results.”

Such “leg-hold traps” are legal for licensed trappers to place.

The city worker who found the raccoon said, although not being a fan of the crea-

tures, he was “really disgusted” by what he witnessed.

“I felt really sorry for this little guy. I think people need to be informed how cruel this is,” said the worker.

“I don’t know where it encountered the trap, but it also could have been someone’s pet there or a child could have encountered that trap as well. (It’s) very irresponsible of someone to set that trap in a residential neighbourhood.”

The Fur-Bearers notes the traps can be purchased easily online by anyone and are often found at garage sales.

“The use of traps can be exceptionally dangerous not just for the targeted animal, but for any creature, including domestic cats and dogs or even children, who happen across the trap,” added Nelson.

“We advise anyone experiencing wildlife conflict to contact a reputable humane wildlife removal company, such as those certified through the BC SPCA’s AnimalKind program. The use of traps like these will just lead to suffering.”

Many people across the country enjoyed their first toke of legal cannabis last Wednesday, but the City of Richmond is reminding residents that bylaws restrict where and when you’re allowed to light up.

Richmond already had fairly strict smoking bylaws, and those were amended this spring to forbid cannabis smoking anywhere tobacco smoking is already prohibited.

No matter where you are, the city asks residents to consider those around you, who may not want to inhale second-hand smoke.

“While smoking of cannabis may be permitted in your home and some public areas, residents are encouraged to be aware of the impact of their second hand smoke on others and take steps to limit the spread of smoke,” read a city news release.

A commuter who travels to Downtown Vancouver from Richmond every day is appealing for the River Rock Casino to reinstate its free parking lot.

“Is this not what we’re supposed to be doing to save the environment?”

For five years, Catherine Miller parked in the casino’s vacant lot, to the south-east of Bridgeport station, before jumping on the Canada Line to get to her accountancy office in Vancouver.

After contacting the casino, Miller has been told that it is “working on options with the city.”

Sonja Mandic, director of media relations for River Rock’s owner, Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, told the News the lot had to be closed due to it “becoming a dumping ground for trash and abandoned vehicles.”

At the end of August, however, the lot was abruptly closed off, forcing commuters to park in the casino’s already congested south parkade, which costs $2.50 a day.

The public is being asked to keep an eye out for a missing Richmond teenager.

Since then, Miller, who lives near Westminster Highway and No. 6 Road, has spent hours circling the parkade and surrounding streets looking for a parking option.

“By 8:30 a.m. every morning, all the spots are taken in the parkade...primarily by commuters,” Miller told the Richmond News.

Kien is of slim build, Asian ethnicity, and is 5’ 6” tall.

He was last seen wearing dark coloured shorts, a light coloured t-shirt and a dark jacket. Anyone with information is urged to contact their local police.

“Cars are circling the block looking for somewhere to park. Cones are placed in front of businesses. It’s all two-hour parking limits or spaces reserved for casino guests.

In a bid to strike something off his bucket list, reporter Alan Campbell enlisted the help of Yolanda Blommers, of Blue Meadow Farm, to learn how to ride a horse. Over the next few weeks at her riding school, Blommers will use her 30 plus years of expertise to get Campbell competent in the saddle.

Driving back up Highway 99 after my fourth horse riding lesson at Blue Meadow Farm, I strangely found myself making clicking noises with my mouth.

Thankfully, no one witnessed this vocal phenomenon, which wasn’t sparked by a twitch or the proximity to lunchtime.

Nope, this particular audio delight was me trying to compose a more effective “click” to motivate my lesson horse to keep putting one hoof in front of the other.

In my defence, I was on a new horse for the first time in four weeks, a deliberate tactic from instructor Yolanda, so one doesn’t get used to a certain mount.

But if Yetter — an intelligent, 14-year-old Appaloosa – got any slower under my charge, moss would have formed on his saddle. Clearly, “C’mon Yetter” and “trot on” do not suffice.

Even the introduction of a riding crop for the first time, which I would gently flick off his shoulder, wasn’t doing the trick.

All I had in my locker to keep him on the trot was that clicking sound riders make to “talk” to their horse.

I’ll be honest, my clicks are pitiful. A single grasshopper stuck in a soundproof booth would have more impact.

As such, the onus to get Yetter to go a gear faster was on my legs and feet, which were weary after playing 90 minutes of

soccer the day before.

Perhaps sensing my inexperience, Yetter, the considerate beast that he is, performed the slowest trot likely ever carried out in equine history…and it was all caught on video (Richmond-News.com).

Prior to breaking the aforementioned record, I had been extremely excited to finally get to groom and tack up the horse prior to the lesson, which also involved cleaning the hooves.

Tacking up included fitting a standing martingale, (which prevents the horse’s head from getting too high), saddle blanket, pads, saddle and lastly, the bridle and bit.

A quick check of the stirrup length (finger tips to armpit) before I led him to the outdoor arena.

I walked him around a little to get acquainted, talked to him, re-assured him that everything would be OK and that I’d done this before (I didn’t say it was only three times).

Up I went and then Yolanda handed me a riding crop. Is this for me? Maybe to get my own butt off the saddle quicker?

We did more subtle and sharper turns this time, progressing to a 20-metre circle in both directions, alternating between the left and right reins, all while trying to “post” on the trot.

It felt like it was coming together…the slightest tug on the inside rein and pressure with the outside leg and Yetter immediately responded, the clever lad that he is.

Keeping him on the trot and posting in the tighter circle was tough, though, but I think I managed it a few times.

It is possible that I’m slowly (emphasis on slow) getting the hang of posting the trot and keeping the horse going at the same time.

Another lesson was in the books, however, and still no U.R. (unseated rider). Although, we have been going so slow…..

Giant pumpkin hopes smashed Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

As his giant pumpkin was hoisted a few feet off the ground, David Chan could see the last seven months of his life flash before his eyes.

One tiny slip and his pride and joy, which he grew in his kitchen from a seed in April, could crack and split, rendering it completely useless for any competition.

Chan then watched intensely as his estimated 1,400-plus pound gourd was delicately transported by a tractor’s forklift about 40 feet from his giant pumpkin patch, in his rural, east Richmond backyard, to the back of his pick-up truck.

Moments earlier, the pumpkin-growing enthusiast had “cut the cord” on the giant vegetable, which has been growing in a very special, 2,000 square foot patch since April.

As the pumpkin – one of the biggest in B.C. this season – was lowered the last few inches onto the truck, a very relieved smile grew on Chan’s face.

“It’s Miller time!” shouted Chan, referring to the annual tradition of cracking open a pack of Miller beer with tractor driver John after another successful giant pumpkin harvest.

Asked what he was thinking about those last few seconds, Chan added, “If it did slip, it would be about $5,000 damage to my truck. But you saw how carefully John drove the tractor, he knows what he’s doing.”

The giant pumpkin made its way to a competition called “The Terminator” in Portland last Friday, along with retired Chan, his wife, Janet, and their two grandchildren.

Saturday morning was the weigh-off and Chan, who’s been growing giant pumpkins for 10 years (seven in his current backyard), hoped this one would break the B.C. record of 1,544 pounds.

“This is the biggest I’ve ever grown,” Chan said, before heading to Portland. “I’ve got another that was weighed at Krause Berry Farm competition in Langley (two weeks ago) and it was 1,379 pounds; that was bigger than my best before that, 1,339 pounds.”

Chan attributed this year’s giant being so big to a good summer, along with a bit more time and money spent on it.

“I spent a bit of money doing soil tests and tissue tests on the leaves, so I can tell what kind of nutrients the plant is getting,” he added.

“I have automatic timers on my drip watering system and we can leave for a weekend, but we can’t be away for more than three or four days at a time. So that means no vacations.”

However, Chan pointed out that pumpkins can “grow light or heavy,” depending on a number of factors.

This year’s giant, unfortunately for Chan, grew about 100 pounds lighter than expected at 1,363.

It still finished sixth out of 20 in the giant pumpkin category at Portland.

“It’s all part of the fun of growing giant pumpkins, you never know what you’re gonna get,” added Chan.

He admits to being “a little obssessed” with growing giant pumpkins. “When we bought this place seven years ago, my wife said I could only grow pumpkins every second year, so I guess I’ve kind of broken that. Next year I’ll take some time off to go on holiday.”

Janet, however, may have something to say about that, now that she’s winning her own prizes with her first ever home-grown giant pumpkin.

“I grew mine on another patch close by. It was 829 pounds.

“I don’t have the patience or the obsessive nature for this that David does, though. I did a couple of things to it and David nagged me to do some more.”

Apparently, during “discussions” to and from Portland, it was “agreed” they take a year off from pumpkins and do a little travelling.

“My whole life, I never had a conversation with my dad that went beyond the soy sauce,” said Shigematsu, a former CBC radio host who was born in England and raised in Canada.

“I use every possible different approach, whatever makes it engaging. I tell one story from different modalities, like a drawing that’s very multifaceted,” he explained.

“Many people who have seen the show are from the Middle East, Europe, Africa or India, they all told me the same thing — that their father or mother was very similar, being very quiet or secretive about their past,” he said.

He started a two-year interview with his father, who has worked as a radio-maker for BBC in London, U.K., and turned his experience into a one-man show called Empire of the Son, which will be staged at Gateway Theatre from Nov. 8 to 17.

“I learned things like, for example, my father had tea with the Queen of England, he was there when Marilyn Monroe sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to John F. Kennedy, and

Tetsuro Shigematsu wrote and starred in Empire of the Son. as a young boy, he also stood in the ashes of Hiroshima,” recalled Shigematsu.

When Shigematsu asked his father if he could share their conversation with the rest of the world, his father looked confused and “couldn’t understand why anyone could find his life story the least bit interesting.

Empire of the Son is a story about parents and children, the distances between them and attempts to overcome and bridge that distance, according to Higematsu.

“There is the distance between anyone who has had a parent who doesn’t speak about hardship in their lives. For example, some of our parents travelled a long way just to give us a better life,” said Shigematsu.

“But actually others found them very interesting, and so do I,” said Shigematsu.

“It’s also about learning. Sometimes as children, we have rules for our parents about how we insist they must love us, but (the show is) also about letting go of those rules.”

But after touring the show across Canada, he discovered that this is more of a generational story.

“I’m always happiest when people tell me that they want to begin asking their parents questions or that they are going to call their mom after the show.

“Someone told me, he is going to make a point of touching his mom physically.”

One thing people are surprised at, added Shigematsu, is how funny the show is.

“People think its very emotional, very sad, but in fact there is huge laughter during the show. I think that deepens the show and, in turn, makes the emotional part all the more poignant,” said Shigematsu.

Empire of the Son will be running at Gateway Theatre from Nov. 8 to 17.

uke Navrot isn’t looking for sympathy; he isn’t even looking for help.

All the 38-year-old mature student wants is to not be feared by his temporary, adopted community.

On and off over the last year, Navrot – who’s from Kimberley in the Kootenays – has called various parking lots along the south arm dyke in Steveston his home while he studies political science at Langara College in Vancouver.

Initially in the back of a camper van and now a truck camper, the former building contractor has been “roughing it” as he can’t afford accommodation in the region’s extortionate rental market.

Now in the third and final year of three-year diploma, Navrot has been happy enough to make the best of his situation, cycling to the Canada Line in Richmond, before taking the train to college.

Only in the last few weeks, however, has he started to fall foul of the city’s complaintdriven parking bylaws, which prohibits anyone parking in the same place for more than 72 hours.

Navrot has attracted three such complaints in recent weeks and, subsequently, received two warning notices from the city’s bylaw department, forcing him to move each time or risk paying a $75 maximum fine he can ill afford.

“I’m not sure how many strikes I get? But I’m running out of places to go,” said Navrot, who said so-called “affordable housing” isn’t an option on his income.

“I would just like people to give me the benefit of the doubt I guess. I would say to the folks living in this area, you never know who people are when you see them in this position; some people are down on their luck, some don’t have a choice.

“Maybe go up and say ‘hi,’ see what they’re up to. I’m hoping that, if people see this story, they may be less inclined to complain. I’m no threat, that’s for sure.

“Come down and have a cup of tea with me.”

Navrot told the Richmond News how he and his wife, in 2016, rented their 1940s, renovated 1,100-square foot former mining house in Kimberley, before moving to Vancouver so he could study at Langara.

Being almost 40, he was looking to “get into something else (meaningful) before it’s too late.

“Something international. I like to help people, mediating between companies and countries, who knows.”

Navrot and his wife initially rented an apartment in Vancouver for $1,800 a month, plus utilities.

As the bylaw applies universally across the city, it’s not practical to have signs to that effect everywhere.

“My wife was working, I was at school fulltime, we kept (the apartment) for a year.

“We recognize the difficulty Mr. Navrot is facing and bylaws staff did provide him with information on housing resources he may be able to access,” said Townsend.

“Eventually, it all wore a bit thin and we had to move out within a year. I went to work for the summer and came back here last fall, stayed with a cousin in Steveston, but it was getting too crowded.

“The issue of people living in RVs or other vehicles on city streets has become a growing issue around the region.

“And then I bought a camper van and we moved into that last fall, staying on Dyke Road, near the Britannia Shipyards.

Given the situation, Navrot said he tried to transfer course credits nearer to home, but “they wouldn’t give me credit for more than 70 per cent and I didn’t want to give all that up so…”

“Both our new expanded emergency shelter and the Temporary Modular Housing project will be opening within the next few months.

US-China trade war impacts local businesses

The ripple effect of the ongoing US-China trade war has spread to Richmond, where many local businesses depend on trade with China.

“Without the large U.S. market for Chinese goods, shipping fees and prices for products inported to North America will increase, because if you just buy small quantity, there is a price difference.”

Fong said one thing he has already noticed is a slowdown in the development of new products by Chinese manufacturers.

Some businesses, especially those importing Chinese products, are preparing for negative effects of the battel. However, those exporting Canadian products to China are seeing good changes take place.

“Because of the uncertainty of the U.S. market, manufacturer owners are hesitant when creating new products for the coming year,” said Fong.

Johnny Fong, Richmond philanthropist and chairman of wholesale giant Brands Inc., told the Richmond News that if the trade war continues, local consumers might see an increase in price in Made-in-China products.

“There are a lot of investment costs people have to pay upfront to develop new products. When business owners only sell a small quantity, they cannot afford the development costs.”

Brands Inc. is Canada’s largest wholesale of its kind and imports products such as housewares, kitchen wares, toys and giftware from China.

Fong said all those factors mean more costs for his company and for consumers in Canada in the future.

The company offers more than 10,000 types of products and imports 10 million plus items every month, selling them to supermarkets and dollar stores across Canada, according to Fong.

“As you may know, a large percentage of Chinese manufactured goods are sold to the United States market. The Canadian market is only 10 per cent of the U.S. market,” said

Natalie Korenic pulled off her own version of a “hat trick” at last weekend’s Sixth Annual Pacific Coast Female Rep Classic at the Richmond Ice Centre.

The 26-year-old is not only in her first-season as head coach of the host Richmond Pee Wee “AA” Ravens, she has teamed up with her dad to serve as tournament director. If that’s not enough, Korenic was also be on the ice as a member of the Richmond Devils as two regular season games in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League were showcased as part of the weekend schedule.

“It was the age group that I really missed doing and that’s where I wanted to be. It’s a lot of fun and I’m loving it,” said Korenic who will be taking her young squad to a tournament in Regina later this season.

Her parents — John and Pat Korenic — ran the Richmond Girls Ice Hockey Association for many years before stepping away to launch the Richmond Devils Women’s Hockey Club. It provides graduating players an opportunity to continue their careers at a very competitive level and that’s why they wanted to feature a couple of games at the Rep Classic.

Korenic didn’t hesitate getting her dad involved as a tournament director given he oversaw the association’s Ice Classic that takes place each spring.

“I wanted to help out and the board said they had no one doing the tournament. I thought I’m sure my dad would like to do it so I volunteered us to do it then went home and told him,” she said.

Korenic, who works as a marketing manager for a bio tech company in Vancouver, is thrilled to be continuing what has become of family tradition of giving up so much of her time to minor hockey.

“My parents were always so involved in everything and that’s a big part of it for me,” she said.

“I think it’s important that when you come out of an association to give something back when it has given you so much.”

The host Ravens reached the final of the Midget “AA” championship game before dropping a 4-0 decision to San Jose.

Red Deer defeated San Jose to capture the Bantam “AA” title while Kelowna was crowned Pee Wee “AA” champions after a 4-1 win over North Shore.

Korenic’s squad finished fourth after a 3-2 loss to South Island in the bronze medal game.

The Richmond Christian Eagles are once again among the top ranked senior boys volleyball teams in the province and Elijah Kim is one of the big reasons why. The Grade 12 standout is enjoying another impressive season and is looking to cap his decorated high school career in style with another trip to the provincial “AA” championships.

A year ago he was a second team all-star and Lower Mainland MVP in the Eagles’ run to fifth best in B.C. The Air Attack club member also thrives in beach volleyball and was a member of the Team B.C. U18 program this past summer. He is already talking to several schools about the next chapter of his career at the collegiate level in 2019. The News is proud to recognize Elijah as athlete of the month for October.

“We have been planning this for a long time.

We have gone to San Jose several times and know they have good teams down there so we emailed every single California team we could find. Every team in Alberta and Ontario too,” said Korenic. “We’re excited at how it all come together.“Markham made a huge trip out of it.

The players are wearing hoodies that say ‘Vancouver 2018’ and with the all the girls being in Grade 12, they toured UBC, along with the Capilano Suspension Bridge and Steveston.

Junior Wildcats win bronze at Volleyball B.C. tourney RICHMOND SOCKEYES Volleyball B.C.’s Grade 10 Girls Volleyfest last weekend featured plenty of Richmond flavour as teams gear up for the upcoming city championships.

The McMath Wildcats, McRoberts Strikers, Cambie Crusaders and Richmond Colts were all participants in the two-day tournament which was part of Volleyball B.C.’s ‘Days at the Dome’ series that takes place at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre in Burnaby.

Three of the local teams reached Sunday’s quarter-final round that included an all-Richmond match-up between the Wildcats and the Strikers. McMath edged its cross-town rivals in two highly-entertaining and competitive sets — 26-24, 25-20.

The Wildcats then fell 2-0 (25-14, 25-18) to Burnaby Central before bouncing back to defeat Windsor in a thrilling bronze medal match — 25-12, 20-25, 15-13.

Cambie finished third in its pool group and needed an extra win over Sutherland (2521, 25-21) to reached the final eight. The

Crusaders then bowed out of championship contention with a loss to Van Tech (25-16, 25-18).

In earlier pool play, McMath captured its group without dropping a set with wins over Pemberton, Burnaby South and Windsor.

The Strikers nearly did the same, finishing second with a 2-1 record after defeating Centennial and Charles Tupper, before dropping a three-setter to first place Delta.

The Crusaders took third place in their pool group which was highlighted by a tight three-set win over the Colts — 25-21, 14-25 and 15-10.

All four teams will wrap up their regular season schedule over the next week then turn their attention to what should be a highly-competitive Richmond Championship.

McMath currently sits with a 7-0 record followed by the Colts, Strikers and StevestonLondon at 5-1. The Crusaders are at 4-3 but that includes tight three-set losses to McMath and McRoberts.

TWEEDLIE, Stuart Baird It is with great sorrow we announce the sudden death of Stuart Tweedlie of Langley due to a heart attack on Friday, October 12th, 2018 at home.

Stuart was born in Lennoxtown, Scotland on August 6th, 1964 and moved with the family to Vancouver in 1974 at the age of 10. Throughout his life, he has resided in Richmond, Toronto, and Ottawa, eventually settling in Abbotsford where he and his wife, Marta, began their prosperous furniture business. Stuart excelled in all his endeavors, loved playing guitar and became an avid diver.

Stuart was the beloved son of Joan and George Tweedlie and devoted husband of Marta. Sons Derryck (Andi) and Dustyn, and daughter Janine are missing him dreadfully.
