So, about this referendum.

Surely you know by now that we’re being asked to vote on whether we think the province should maintain its current electoral system of First Past the Post (FPTP) or move to a system of proportional representation (PR).

Like many voters, I understand the basic difference between the two. In FPTP, whoever gets the most votes in a particular riding wins the seat and whichever party wins the most seats, runs the government. Simple.

Where it becomes a head scratcher is when one party ends up with 100 per cent of the power (majority government), despite having just 39 per cent of the popular vote — as is the case with our current federal (Liberal) government.

PR, on the other hand, ensures that if a party gets 30 per cent of the vote, it gets 30 percent of the seats. Simple.

The catch here is how do you decide which candidate ends up representing which ridings. And this brings us to the second not-so-simple question on the ballot: if you want PR, which of three systems would you choose.

Last week, I tuned into the leaders debate (Premier Horgan arguing for PR and the Liberal’s leader Andrew Wilkinson arguing for FPTP) naïvely thinking it would give me a clearer idea of the pros and cons, as well as a better understanding of the three PR options. Ha! What was I thinking?

I’m not a big fan of political debates at the best of times, so my expectations were not particularly high, but even I was astonished at how completely useless the ... well ... to call it a debate is a stretch, was. Honestly, both should be ashamed. Moreover, it left those of us seeking clarity in an even thicker fog.

But, fear not. When your leaders let you down, Google and YouTube are there to tell you what to think.

Actually, these are not bad options. A number of YouTube “explainers” are remarkably helpful with all their clever graphs and colourful illustrations. Last weekend, I spent hours (I’m not even kidding here) watching a few of them multiple times and fervently discussing the various systems with my partner. My conclusion: the proposals are neither simple, as Horgan said, or a “dog’s breakfast” as Wilkinson said.

It did take some effort to get my mind around the options, but the more familiar they became, the more reasonable they seemed. While perhaps not perfect, they are a genuine attempt to ensure that the people’s government is the best possible reflection of the people’s vote. And that, in itself, is the crux of democracy — despite all its pitfalls and challenging consequences.

But whatever you think of FPTP or PR or the three options, it would be a real shame if people simply bowed out of the debate because it’s “too complicated.”

It’s not too complicated, what it is is unfamiliar. And, sure, the unfamiliar often looks like a dog’s breakfast. I’ve thought that about some iPhone upgrades, but not being used to something is not a great reason to reject it.

Point being, governance matters, get informed and vote. If you can handle a smart phone, you can handle this.

I actually would like to see them raise the salaries of daycare providers. Because if we want to make it an attractive profession, we need to be able to attract qualified people, and people who are willing to make a commitment, and make it their career. Then over time, you build up better quality daycare services.

I think they should raise their salaries so they could have more teachers in daycare. They should provide that as part of the tax system. Some of the portions of the taxes we pay to the government should go more towards daycares. And that should come through raised salaries.

In my opinion, the current problem is not just the teachers; it’s that the whole expenses for the owner of the daycare are not cheap, right? Maybe (the government) can just use the funding to cover some expenses of the daycare.

Paramedics Time to demand rental need it more housing in Richmond core Dear Editor,

Re: “All in for firefighters,” Letters, Nov. 8

On Nov. 19, Richmond city council will be hosting a public hearing on approving the Richmond Centre redevelopment.

The Lansdowne Centre redevelopment and other nearby major developments on No. 3 Road will follow shortly. They will create thousands of new housing units for sale to investors unless Richmond council sets a new course for affordable housing.

Rohit claims that the backbone of our city consists of firemen, nurses, and police officers. Forgetting one service that is still not considered essential.

When dialing 911, an individual gets a choice of police, fire or ambulance. Everyone is constantly forgetting about our paramedics.

I’m against the increase in tax for firefighters as there has been a decrease in structure fires or any fire-related accidents due to building codes being stricter and new cars being safer. I would accept a tax increase to help paramedics, though.

John Roston has been advocating for 60 per cent of the new units to be market rental housing. This demand of developers would change the future of our city.

We wouldn’t be looking at towers of empty units in our downtown core, we’d see young people, older adults and families enlivening our city centre.

We have numerous fire halls in Richmond which allow for firefighters to respond promptly to any medical emergency, and this is why they often arrive before an ambulance. We only have two ambulance stations in Richmond. We should be increasing funding for paramedics so that they are able to arrive quicker than firefighters in a medical emergency. This would be of utmost importance as firefighters do not transport any individuals to the hospital.

With the rising age in the population, I believe that more paramedic funding would be more beneficial than more firefighter funding.

Needless to say, my son was distraught.

At that exact moment, our Canada Post carrier was passing by. My son let him into the house where he shut off the gas stove and did a cursory check — “No fire, just smoke,” he reassured my son.

I don’t buy into the mindset that we can’t do anything, or that developers won’t build it. If it is the cost of doing business in Richmond, they will do it.

Today, when my son came home from early dismissal at school, he found the fire alarm blaring at our house. Unbeknownst to him, his dad had accidentally left some eggs boiling on the stovetop before heading off to work and the house was full of smoke.

We need creative solutions, we need real action on housing, we need change now because even taking steps such as this will still be years in the making. I would love for my children to know that we did everything we could to keep them here — they deserve to be able to live in the city they grew up in.

We need action on affordable housing for all residents and I urge new and existing councillors to do something inspiring for the future of Richmond. Richmond residents, I urge you to email council at mayorandcouncillors@richmond.ca and ask them to make sure that developers are required to build a significant portion of market rental housing into their developments.

We’d be appropriately housing the people of Richmond. We’d likely see a resurgence in jobs being filled that have been sitting unfilled: teachers on call, learning assistance teachers, service and clerk positions, etc. We wouldn’t lose our young brilliant minds to other cities if we work on developing the supply of market rental housing now.

The TFSA contribution limit – rising?

There is talk about the TFSA annual contribution limit, now at $5,500, rising next year to $6,000. The outstanding columnist, John Heinzl, of the Globe & Mail newspaper, wrote about it last month. The TFSA is an important retirement savings opportunity for Canadians. Although TFSA contributions attract no up front tax credit, as with RRSP contributions, the income earned from a TFSA is not taxable. In retirement, then, your TFSA income is not added to taxable income. That is great, partly because at an annual income of about $73,000, your OAS benefits will start getting clawed back. If your annual income exceeds roughly $115,000, your OAS is zilch. It is totally clawed back.

Dear Constituents, The fall session of the Legislative Assembly is well underway and MLAs have been working on various bills covering a range of issues from the routine (eg. spelling changes in existing laws, Bill 43: Miscellaneous Statutes Minor Corrections) to the substantive (eg. the new real estate speculation tax, Bill 45: Budget Measures Speculation and Vacancy Tax Act).

One of the most significant bills we debated is Bill 40: Electoral Reform Referendum 2018 Amendment Act which proposes a second referendum in the future should voters select Proportional Representation in the referendum on how we choose MLAs which is currently underway.

If you have not already voted in the current referendum I encourage you to get informed and make your choice, between keeping our current system called “First Past The Post” to changing to a form of “Proportional Representation”. This referendum could change our democracy in a very fundamental way. I have spoken extensively in the legislature on this referendum and my views are well known, that is, we should keep our current voting system of “First Past The Post”. Be the change in Richmond School of diversity Dear Editor, “I love Richmond, but I don’t like what’s happened to Richmond.”

“I feel like I don’t really belong here anymore because I’m outnumbered by all these Asian people.”

“The last time I looked, Richmond is in Canada, not China.”

I read, with dismay, a story published last month in a national paper. The article paints a picture of my hometown divided by race, language, and class.

The stories are familiar to readers of the Richmond News: businesses without English, mansions without occupants, strata council meetings and a mayoral bid catering only to Mandarin speakers, unfriendly encounters with newcomers.

There is a solution to Richmond’s division.

That solution is you. Every day, you have a chance to shape Richmond into the community you want to see.

Will you step outside your comfort zone and invite the new neighbours over for a meal, introduce yourself to the resident across the hall, or chat with a fellow commuter on the bus?

Put differently, will you ask what Richmond can do for you, or will you ask what you can do for your local community?

When faced with Richmond’s seemingly unbridgeable cultural divide, we should never forget the power that small acts can have in bridging the gap.

Besides some of the legitimate complaints voiced by Richmond residents, what dismayed me the most about the article was the sense of helplessness that those interviewed felt about our fractured city. What also troubled me was the impression left by the article that there was little that the city could do to achieve its stated goal of “cultural harmony.”

The cultural divide that Richmond faces today is not unique to Richmond. As the world becomes more connected, it is also coming apart in other ways. In Richmond, we have a real chance to show other cities just how cultural harmony might be achieved. It will take a lot of work. But with small acts, we each have the power to change our community for the better.

But, to me, Richmond residents are not helpless, and “cultural harmony” is not un-

Dear Editor, While it is easy to get bogged down by the news of the day and the challenges associated with life in an urban setting, it is important to pause and take stock of the uniquely Richmond attributes that positively define us.

Among these is our diversity. As residents of Richmond, we are exposed to ethnic diversity every day, yet we often fail to recognize just how nationally and globally distinct this is or the underlying strength that it implies.

Our city’s most unique and unheralded feature is the diversity in our schools. The underlying climate of acceptance and respect toward different cultures and ethnic backgrounds is so interwoven into the tapestry of Richmond’s schools that it has become a matter of course for students and staff.

Having worked at many Richmond schools and currently at Hugh Boyd Secondary, I have witnessed this first-hand. Each day I am heartened to see students enjoying each other’s presence without giving the ethnicity of their schoolmates a second thought.

This season on the school soccer team, I was amazed to see how quickly international students from Brazil and Mexico integrated and were welcomed by other students on

the pitch, inside the classrooms and along the hallways.

We often take for granted this level of inclusion and integration, despite its elusiveness to most of the world. In recent conversations with visiting teachers from Finland and Sweden, the overriding sentiment expressed is one of wonder and appreciation at how effortlessly our student body flourishes among and welcomes ethnic difference.

In many ways, our city is a global leader in an experiment that proves that students can and do thrive through multicultural experience. Exposing our youth to diversity is not just a means of promoting a more respectful society. Familiarity and understanding of cultural differences is a professional asset — essential to thriving in an economically interdependent world.

Certainly, incidences of racism have occurred in Richmond, and attitudinal undercurrents of stereotyping and prejudice, continues to persist. Nevertheless, as a teacher, I am buoyed by a sense of optimism and a firm belief that racial undertones will diminish as the students we teach today step into adulthood and begin to make their mark on our city.

The announcement that the province will subsidize childcare costs was bittersweet as one daycare’s CEO says the labour shortage should have been addressed first.

While families using one Richmond daycare won’t be paying more than $200 monthly per child thanks to a new provincial program, that daycare’s CEO says addressing the childcare labour shortage should have been a first priority.

Pamela Wallberg runs Alderwood House, a daycare in Steveston recently selected as one of 53 daycare centres in B.C. that will trial low-cost childcare with provincial support.

For Wallberg, however, the announcement was troubling and pointed to the fact the childcare industry is struggling to recruit trained educators.

“My concern is if (the province) is rolling out a prototype program without addressing the labour crisis first, it isn’t going to be effective,” Wallberg said.

“I have genuine concern about being

While the province has announced a “wage enhancement” to supplement early child educators’ wages and encourage more educators to join the field, Wallberg said this doesn’t go far enough.

The provincial prototypes are being funded through a $60 million investment under the Early Learning and Child Care Agreement with the federal government.

Health chiefs: Watch out for botulism sauce Alyse Kotyk RICHMOND NEWS

Customers are being warned of potential botulism in Richmond-made Betty’s King Sauce after Vancouver Coastal Health issued a notice about the product last Thursday.

According to VCH, the sauce, prepared out of a Richmond home, is being produced in a facility that has not been approved or inspected by the health authority.

Sold online from social media accounts and on a public website, VCH says the sauce also contains ingredients and uses a processing method that could allow for harmful bacteria growth.

That harmful bacteria, known as Clostridium botulinum, can cause foodborne botulism, a rare but potentially lifethreatening bacterial illness, says the health authority.

“Food contaminated with the toxin may not look or smell spoiled, but when ingested can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dry throat, respiratory failure or paralysis,” explains VCH. “Most people with botulism develop symptoms 12 to 36 hours after consuming contaminated food.”

At this time, the processor has been told to stop production. No illnesses have been reported.

At Tuesday night’s council meeting, Richmond’s new city council voted 6-3 in favour of limiting home sizes on agricultural lands even further.

Last week, at a general purposes committee meeting followed by a special council meeting, council voted unanimously in favour of limiting farmland homes to 500 square metres with a home plate size of 1,000 square metres. However, on Tuesday, Coun. Chak Au proposed an amendment to limit home sizes to 400 square metres.

Couns. Au, Harold Steves, Carol Day, Michael Wolfe, Kelly Greene and Bill McNulty all voted in favour of the smaller size.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie and Couns. Linda McPhail and Alexa Loo voted against.

“It’s become obvious that what has been started has not been enough to protect our farmland. With the price of farmland still so inflated, it’s now out of reach for the young farmers who want to do farming in Richmond,” Au said during Tuesday’s

“By allowing this kind of speculation to continue to happen, we are literally stealing farmland from our future generations… some people may argue it’s already too late. But hopefully, it will stop further damage (from being) done on our farmlands.”

On Wednesday morning, Steves told the Richmond News he was “still smiling” from council’s decision.

“Chak Au was superb, he told me he wanted to move the motion, we talked about it beforehand,” Steves said.

“He had a prepared presentation…he explained exactly why he changed his position and he ended up saying he asked his kids and his kids told him to do it. So what he was doing he was doing for the future generations.”

For Brodie, however, the lowered limit was “excessive.”

“I believe that we have to support farmers,” Brodie told the News.

“The people who own farms, the farmers, are not happy about going down to 500 sq. m. and I am sure they are far more unhappy about 400.”

Brodie added that he was in favour of all the other points in the bylaw, including limits to the home plate size.

“I felt the (previous) reduction to 500 square metres was reasonable,” Brodie said, adding that he feels the provincial guidelines to limit home sizes to 500 square metres (or approximately 5,400 square feet) is “reasonable.”

For Steves, however, 500 square metres was the suggested “upper limit” of the provincial guidelines. He explained that provincial guidelines state farmland home limits should be the same as the largest homes on a city’s non-agricultural land, or no larger than 500 square metres, whichever is less.

“The reason for that is that if you have the biggest house the same size as the biggest house in your residential area, the value of the property will be for the value of the house of that size, but it won’t affect the farmland,”

Coun. Chak Au Steves said.

“Whereas if you get a bigger house…you’re increasing the value of the property so much that it affects the value of the overall property and the people farming can’t afford to buy it.”

Steves added that in Richmond, a 2017 staff report stated the largest home in a residential zone was approximately 400 square metres, or around 4,200 square feet.

Wolfe, who also voted in favour of 400 square metres, was pleased that council was considering a lower limit.

“This is an issue that citizens of Richmond have been concerned about and really

If passed, Bill 52 — or the agricultural land commission amendment, 2018 — will include “addressing megamansions and speculation in the ALR by limiting new house sizes to less than 500 square metres.” However, limits to home plate size were not included.

Applications will be accepted to the Agricultural Land Commission for exceptions to this limitation.

In Richmond, a moratorium is now in effect prohibiting applications for new developments under the old home size allowances of 10,764 square feet. The bylaw will now head to a public hearing for a final vote in December.

Futuristic bike rack coming to the city Richmond is going to be the first in Canada to have an automated bike storage system when the new Minoru Centre for Active Living opens.

The electronic bike rack has a 34-bike capacity and was purchased earlier this year by the City of Richmond for a “negotiated” cost of $127,500 (the actual value was $225,000).

The system — called SABPS-1 or “MAZDome” — was selected from a Metro Vancouver-based company called Mazdis.

It will feature additional storage space for accessories and has multi-layer protection from theft and vandalism.

According to the city’s projections, it’s estimated the unit will serve approximately 21,900 bicycles a year over 15 years, which equates to 38 cents per bike.

The city said the purchase of the system includes a two-year warranty with options to extend and a full operating and maintenance manual, with training provided to staff.

A secure bike storage (or enclosure) unit is a zoning requirement for the new Minoru facility, which was slated to open this fall, after a roughly 16-month delay.

Fishing safety addressed WorkSafeBC said commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in B.C. and has launched a campaign to raise awareness about fishing-industry safety.

“Drowning is the leading cause of death among B.C. fishermen,” said a press release, adding fishermen should always wear life-saving personal flotation devices (PFDs) at work.

As Bob Taylor would later tell his daughter, his first call working for Richmond Fire-Rescue was responding to a fatal crash on Westminster Highway.

It was in the 1970s, and when Taylor got on scene, the officer in charge told him to go into the bushes to retrieve a victim’s severed head. New on the job, Taylor put on gloves, readied a plastic bag and moved in to collect it.

Responding to graphic, traumatic calls is part of every firefighter’s job. It takes a toll on anyone, and what makes it worse, said Fire Chief Tim Wilkinson, is the sense of helplessness that despite your best efforts, people still die.

But even though firefighting is a hard job, Taylor was good at it. He was brave, caring and “tough as nails,” his daughter Christy Judd told the Richmond News. He rose through the ranks to become a captain, and was once awarded firefighter of the year.

“Being a firefighter was in my dad’s blood,” Judd said. “Saving people’s lives was what fed his soul.”

On Oct. 14, Taylor died by suicide.

He was 65 and had been retired for about a decade.

He was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, his family said. It’s a mental illness that can develop following a traumatic event. It’s characterized by intrusive memories, flashbacks or nightmares about the event, agitation or a feeling of numbness or detachment.

“He said he couldn’t turn his brain off,” Judd said.

PTSD is a disorder that’s more prevalent in first responders than the general population. One German study found that nearly 20 per cent of surveyed firefighters presented with symptoms of PTSD. A 2017 Canadian study that surveyed about 6,000 public safety personnel found that 45.5 per cent of them screened positive for “clinically signifi-

was prized to one where mental health is taken very seriously.

A U.S. firefighter’s foundation says that, in any given year, a department is four times more likely to experience a member dying by suicide than being killed in the line of duty.

The Richmond department has implemented Critical Incident Stress Management sessions, where firefighters who go out on a traumatic call are taken aside and debriefed on their reactions afterwards. The department has also implemented mandatory mental health training courses like Resilient Minds and the Road to Mental Readiness.

Judd recalls her dad as “larger than life,” someone prone to random acts of kindness for strangers, like leaving a case of beer on his neighbour’s steps when he moved into his apartment.

Don Taylor, Bob’s younger brother, also remembers him as someone with a “passionate character.” The two were close, playing sports together and growing up on Francis Road in Richmond.

“Basically, a person has a capacity to take on trauma. And we’re all a little bit different. We’ve taken on a bit more or a bit less. But once you’re full, you’re full. You can’t take any more,” Wilkinson said.

He hopes the department’s education efforts give them the ability to process and “shed” that trauma.

“You definitely get a sense from the room that it’s not an easy topic, even though we’re just role playing. They’re not easy conversations — but they’re necessary,” Dickson said.

“That’s something that I struggle with often, what to do with our retired members. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of answers,” he said.

Dickson remembers the very first Resilient Minds class he ran was on the Monday after Bryan Kongus’ funeral, a Richmond firefighter who took his own life in 2017. Needless to say, there was buy-in from members to participate.

Earlier this year, amendments were made to worker’s compensation legislation so that mental disorders that occur in workers who are first responders are automatically assumed to be caused by exposure to traumatic incidents at work. Before, the onus was on the first responder and their family to prove that was the case.

Although, today, it is strongly impressed on new recruits that Richmond Fire-Rescue takes mental health seriously, that wasn’t always the case.

Wilkinson, Dickson and Cory Parker, president of Richmond’s firefighter union, are all more than 25 years into their firefighting careers. They all said when they started, things were much different.

“The follow-up 20 years ago was the captain saying ‘you ok?’,” Parker said.

“Well, a number of years back, you would have a couple of drinks. So basically, you dull the feelings,” Wilkinson added.

Judd said her dad came from a generation of firefighters that formed a sort of “old boys club,”whereyoudidn’ttalkaboutmentalhealth struggles. As a result, he didn’t have the tools to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder.

Should more support be available to retirees?

Parker believes there’s still catching up to do, for a profession that for so long prided itself on toughness.

While active members have workplace benefits and coverage for things like psychologist appointments, Parker is worried about retirees slipping through the cracks.

Judd said she’d like to see more outreach to retirees — perhaps information packages delivered to their door detailing the supports available. Don, Taylor’s brother, agreed.

Steve Fraser, with Vancouver Fire-Rescue, said the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association has recently opened up mental health retreats to retirees. They’re three-day-long courses involving group work and sessions with mental health professionals.

But besides that, he said he’s not sure what to tell retirees other than to seek help through community supports like family doctors and private counsellors.

The new legislation came into effect on May 17, 2018 and only applies to WCB decisions made after that date. Though Taylor died in October, he stopped working long before.

“The family probably does have an uphill battle here,” he said.

The Richmond News asked WorkSafeBC what the new legislation might mean for a retiree, but did not receive a response before press time.

Deaths illustrate the importance of focusing on mental health Wilkinson said he doesn’t want members like Taylor or Kongus to be made into martyrs. But, at the same time, their deaths reinforce how necessary a proactive approach to mental health is.

He wants every member to feel comfortable reaching out for help.

“You’re an action-oriented person. We hired you to be that, so take action. If you’re having a struggle with your mental health, that’s not a bad thing. Go to a psychologist, go to a counsellor. Delve into it, and take your life into your own control.”

Judd thinks the department’s current focus on mental health is “the best news possible.”

“It’s hopefully going to save a life. It’s going to save a family losing their loved one,” she said.

“I was in total shock for days, really,” Niamath told the Richmond News.

“It is the most prestigious award they give at the Royal Conservatory. There are so many extraordinary famous people who were given the award like Lang Lang (renowned Chinese concert pianist).”

Jazz genius Oscar Peterson and Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt are also among the greats who have recieved the honour.

Niamath started composing music at age five and is most known for her 11 albums of piano music for young pianists, which are sold worldwide.

“When I was teaching here in my piano studio in the 1970s, I wanted to create some music for the students that really has some sparkle to it, or fun, so they would want to keep practicing. Motivation is very important.

“And the pieces would also teach them technical and interpretive skills.”

For example, one of the pieces she wrote is called skating, teaching students to “skate up and down the keyboard,” said Niamath.

Niamath said she got her inspiration from her two daughters and students — she had a student who liked to play hide and seek, so Niamath wrote a piece for her.

March of the Terrible Trolls is one of Niamath’s most famous pieces, which became an examination piece for students across North America to play in their Grade 1 exam.

For Niamath, music is joy and happiness and “it’s wonderful to introduce little children to the beauty of it as soon as possible.

“I think it’s a very important part of life, obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t have spent my life doing this,” laughed Niamath. “(But) I don’t believe in force; I believe in encouragement. It’s a shame if children just end up hating music because they are forced. Parents, be patient, let your child develop gradually, and enjoy music with them.”

Whether it’s the clock ticking during multiple deadlines or teeing off on the first hole in front of 40 rowdy “mates” who’re dying for an “epic fail,” more often than not, I soak it up and perform.

So when I had an audience for the first time during my six-week journey into learning to ride a horse, it shouldn’t have presented any problems.

Due to Monday being a holiday, my wife and 16-year-old son came along to check out the horses and to see if I really did canter the week before, or if it was, as Mr. Trump would say, “fake news.”

And although there was nothing remotely resembling the aforementioned “epic fail,” it was slightly distracting to see, out of the corner of my eye, the pair of them smiling as I trotted ponderously around on my lesson horse, Yetter.

I’m not sure what they made of their middleaged husband/dad bobbing up and down in the saddle and looking like the proverbial fish out of water?

Afterwards, they commented that I looked “very natural” on horseback — but what else are they going to say?

Fortunately, they did see a canter, of sorts, albeit briefer than the very brief, inaugural ones the week before.

During the lesson, this time with instructor Jenny, I was certain I’d broke into at least a couple of cantering strides with Yetter.

On reflection, via my wife’s far too long video, it was more like half a stride.

In my defense, where last week I was on the lunge-line being held by instructor Yolanda, this time Jenny set me off on my own, going “large” around the outdoor arena.

And, unlike the previous lesson where Yolanda was at close quarters to “encourage” Yetter to break into a canter, any gear shift from a trot on Yetter had to come from me and me alone.

The trick, as told previously, is to slide your outside foot back slightly, all while bumping your inside heel into the horse.

Suffice to say, keeping the horse on the trot (with the occasional tap behind the saddle with the riding crop), while giving him “signal” to canter and making sure you don’t lurch forward, is easier said than done.

But, as it did last week, it was incredibly

Going through his posting and trotting practices wasn’t easy for reporter Alan Campbell, under the watcful eyes of his wife and son for the first time.

Video at Richmond-News.com satisfying to realize I had achieved most of it under my own steam.

In the same vein, I’m getting ever so close to learning how to halter, saddle and tack a horse on my own.

After last week’s debacle, I snapped a photo of what the halter (informal bridle) looked like on Yetter’s head, so I would know what to do this week when bringing him in from his paddock.

I almost got it, before one of the stable staff, Jenna, gave me a little help, knowing that my lesson was due to start soon.

Same goes for putting on his saddle and bridle. Without Jenna, I fear the saddle may have gone on backwards, which would have made for a more interesting update than my latest canter!

However, given more time – I need to get to my lesson earlier – I think I could figure out where exactly the saddle pads, girth, throat and nose latches, bit and Martingale all go…and in which order, all while making sure Yetter is safely cross-tied.

I did clean Yetter’s shoes all by myself, though, mastering the art of not crouching down and running your hand down the horse’s leg to alert him you’re about to pick the muck out of his feet.

Earlier in the lesson, I had learned to trot through a tight channel and over a pole on ground, all while steering Yetter through a course and practising looking for the horse’s correct stride before posting (lifting backside and pushing hips while horse is trotting).

My shortcomings at preparing the horse aside, when the riding’s all done and you take him back to the stable, unsaddle him, put his coat on and lead him back to his paddock, there are few better feelings than when he gives you a little approving nudge with his big head as you set him loose.

Roll on lesson #7…my lucky number.

Richmond grandmother Rena Harrop is known by friends and fellow church members for making the most exquisite shortbread.

“It’s sweet … It’s very rich. I haven’t met anyone who did not like it,” Harrop told the Richmond News. “I learned to make it the old way and it seems to be the right way.”

The 90-year-old, who grew up in Ayr, Scotland, says she’s been using the recipe

she learned from her mother for at least 70 years.

Her secret? Mixing the ingredients with her hands.

“I’ve given the recipe to many, many people and they always say it’s not the same. But they use their mixers,” she said. “So it’s more like a cookie.”

Shortbread, she says, is a treat that’s usually only eaten at Christmas time in Scotland. Every year, she makes a batch to sell at the Steveston United Church’s annual Christmas Bazaar (see below). Also available at the bazaar are homemade jams,

Bake at 300F for 30 to 40 minutes. Don’t wait until the cookies turn brown.

“I’m 90, and my hands are getting not so good,” she said.

Pie in the face for Olympian, principal Alan Campbell

Richmond Olympian Evan Dunfee got more than he bargained for when he turned up at Kingswood elementary last week to pick up a cheque on behalf of children’s charity KidSport.

As part of the professional race walker’s bid to raise money while walking 25 kilometres a day for 25 days — to mark KidSport’s 25th anniversary — Kingswood principal Ron Manning told his students they could pie him and Dunfee in the face if they raised $1,000.

Clearly motivated, they exceeded their target, bringing in more than $1,200 in just five days.

As well as his daily 25 kilometres — which he recently completed — Dunfee visited 25 schools to tell his story and give motivational talks.

Christmas Fund feels the need for speed

In the spirit of the season, each week between now and Christmas, the Richmond News will feature the work of local non-profits. We kick off the “Giving” series by featuring the Richmond Christmas Fund.

In its 86 years of helping families in need, the Richmond Christmas Fund has never organized, from beginning to end, its own event. Until now.

And continually trying to think of new ways to inspire people to donate, the fund’s board asked themselves, “what do people really like?” The answer: Cars.

Hence, on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Audi Richmond Showroom at the auto mall, the Fund will host the inaugural, and rather tasty looking, A Not So Silent Night, featuring fast cars, great food and some amazing silent auction items.

“You can lose donors, because their interests change over the years and we felt that we needed to generate a little new interest with new people,” said Wayne Duzita, Richmond Christmas Fund co-chair, while sitting

a few feet away from a $200,000 Audi R8, similar to the one that’s part of the event’s prize package.

“We always rely on everyone else to do something for us so, we thought, wouldn’t it be nice to do our own thing for once.

“And everyone seems to really like cars; I don’t know anybody that doesn’t like cars, so we decided to build it around one of the dealerships here (at Richmond Auto Mall).”

A core group of 12 at the fund, including Duzita and co-chair Michael Chiu, jumped all over the idea of a car-focused fundraiser.

“All of a sudden, we had 12 people wanting to be a part of it, so that became the ‘Dirty Dozen,’” added Duzita.

“When you create something new and different, it’s always a challenge and we approached Gail Terry (auto mall general manager) for help.”

Marketed internally to the non-profit’s board, 20 people bought 10, $100 tickets each to get the event off the ground, with the remaining 100 or so tickets now being sold.

A Not So Silent Night goes from 5:30 to 8 p.m., with a variety of food and liquor stations, allowing guests to mix and mingle among Audi’s line of high-end vehicles.

Live auction items will include the likes of being able to drive a “special vehicle” from a Richmond Auto Mall dealership for one week per month for 13 months; a weekend in Whistler with a $245,000 Audi R8, in-

cluding two nights at the Fairmont Whistler; a four-day, all-inclusive fishing adventure for two in luxury lodges on the remote shores of Haida Gwaii and a “fly anywhere” in B.C. prize with Pacific Coastal Airlines.

Chopsticks granted second life Alyse Kotyk RICHMOND NEWS

It’s no secret that Richmond is renowned for its diverse Asian cuisine, and one entrepreneur has tapped into an underutilized, but abundant, resource that’s resulted from this array of delicacies – disposable bamboo chopsticks.

In 2016, Felix Böck, a UBC graduate, launched his start up, ChopValue, in an attempt to bring awareness to the amount of wood waste in Metro Vancouver.

“One day (Böck) was having sushi with his girlfriend and they realized that bamboo chopsticks were the best way to make people aware of the wood waste issue because it’s something tangible they can relate to,” said Luz Alarado, digital marketer and community builder with ChopValue.

From there, Böck began collecting chopsticks and created a prototype tile of chopsticks broken down into a fibre. However, it wasn’t quite right.

“He kind of destroyed the chopsticks…he showed the prototype to his girlfriend and she was like, ‘no, I don’t think this is (made of) chopsticks,’” Alarado said.

“His second prototype he decided to press the chopsticks as they are and he got this tile that, when you grab it from one side, you can actually see (the chopsticks).”

Now, Böck’s company collects chopsticks across Metro Vancouver, including from 15 Richmond locations such as Vancouver International Airport, Aberdeen Centre, Rich-

ue in June, 2018 and says they’ve sent over 1,000 kilograms of chopsticks to the company.

“This is something that we should be doing…it’s just like our home,” said Joey Kwan, director of promotion and public relations at Aberdeen Centre. “Who doesn’t want to give a little effort to save the earth?”

ChopValue collects chopsticks from 15 Richmond locations and turns them into tiles which are used to make furniture pieces such as the table, right, at River Rock Casino and Resort. Alarado estimates more than 5,000 kilograms of chopsticks have been collected from the Richmond area since 2016, and with these, ChopValue creates tiles which are used to make furniture pieces ranging from small shelves to large tables. The company even helped with a renovation at the River Rock Casino and installed several tables made with their tiles.

Vancouver International Airport was the first Richmond-based business to partner with

ChopValue in 2016 and says they’ve seen more than 520,000 chopsticks recycled.

“We are focused in going above and beyond with the types of materials that are diverted from landfill,” Shaye Folk-Blagbrough, senior environmental specialist, Vancouver Airport Authority told the Richmond News.

Visitors eating at YVR’s food court have the option to leave their tray on a counter for staff to sort the waste on it. With this system, all chopsticks on the tray are simply put in a designated bin for ChopValue to collect, which the company does at least once per week.

Aberdeen Centre’s waste disposal works similarly to the airport’s, with janitorial staff sorting waste from trays left at designated counters in the food court.

“Although it’s just a small thing, a great idea always starts with the little things,” Kwan said.

While there are no individual pick-up options for those finding themselves with an abundance of chopsticks at home, ChopValue’s Alarado explained that anyone can drop their chopsticks off at one of the participating businesses in Richmond.

Andrew Wilkinson, the leader of the B.C. Liberal Party, says he is “gravely concerned” with the possible poor turnout for B.C.’s electoral reform referendum. He made the comments at a Friday event held by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

“I don’t care what your position is on referendum...We ask that everybody take the ballot to your workplace, take it to Tim Hortons, take it to the Chamber of Commerce, and wave it around saying, ‘please vote,’” he said.

Twelve hours after appearing on the televised BC Electoral Reform debate, Wilkinson turned up at the breakfast event, which was also attended by MLAs John Yap, Teresa Wat, Jas Johal and Linda Reid, and Couns. Linda McPhail, Chak Au and Alexa Loo.

The B.C. Liberal party has been advocating their position against the proposed proportional representation system since the referendum was called and their support for the current first-past-the-post status quo.

“The turnout as of Nov. 8, which is 17 days into the referendum, is 2.7 per cent...And all of us say, OMG, I hope the turnout is better than that,” said Wilkinson.

The recently turned 18-year-old is the top rookie scorer in the Pacific Junior Hockey League and is one of the keys to the Richmond Sockeyes remaining a championship contender despite losing nearly their entire roster to graduation.

“I think I have a good touch in front of the net and good hands too.

It’s something I take pride in,” said the 6-foot-1 and 172-pounder. “The season has started off great. My success is good but it’s even better we are winning.”

Pantazis made it through the early round of cuts in training camp and dressed in a couple of pre-season games, scoring each time. Yet he was still left on the outside looking in when the roster was finalized.

“There was immediate ice time there. I would have been fine working for it too but it was given to me so you take it and put your work ethic into it,” he said. “My role here fits my game perfectly being a goal scorer. Just being on the power play and having the puck. That’s what I

do best.”

He is now affiliated with the Coquitlam Express and could start practising with the B.C. Junior Hockey League club as soon as this month. Sockeyes coach Brett Reusch wouldn’t be surprised to see one of his top recruits make the jump next season.

“He has got a gift. He is a pure goal scorer and there are not many that sees the ice the way he does,” he said. “He is opportunistic and it just comes naturally to him.”

Anyone who was looking for a barometer on the current popularity of girls volleyball among the city’s high schools needed to be at McRoberts Secondary.

The host Strikers captured their second straight senior title with a 3-1 win over the Steveston-London Sharks but the highly-entertaining battle was secondary to the atmosphere itself.

A near capacity crowd took in the action and cheered on every point of a match that lasted over two hours.

What volleyball has going for it Richmond is a level of parity that has been created over the years that includes all 11 high schools in the city.

“This was a real (city) championship and it was good,” said longtime McRoberts teacher and coach Trish Nicholson who has volunteered her time since the inception of the allRichmond leagues back in the mid-1990s.

“It’s a sport where you don’t necessarily have to be gigantic to play and it’s easier to learn. A lot of these girls play club together too,” she said.

“We had juniors who are now in Grade 11 and she was the piece of the puzzle they needed,” Nicholson continued. “That’s the way our season was going then boom she blows out her knee in a game against McMath. And she just loves the sport and the girls love her too.”

The Sharks have also enjoyed an impressive campaign with their only loss being to McRoberts (3-1) with Lin in the line-up.

There was a good opportunity to knock off the defending champs and that was evident in the opening set as the Strikers squeaked out a 26-24 win. Steveston-London answered with a 25-23 game two win as the teams exchanged points on continuous long rallies.

Finally, the Strikers pulled away midway through game three en route to a 25-17 win.

They proceeded to jump out to a big lead in game four too before the Sharks answered with their own rally to pull within 20-17. They would get no closer in a 25-18 defeat.

“For us to win this match without (Olivia) is a big deal for them,” added Nicholson. “We needed some of our other Grade 12s to step up and I thought Jeanna Tang had a great game. So did our core Grade 11s. They had never won at the (younger) levels so this is big for them.”

Wildcats rally to win city junior crown The McMath Wildcats completed a perfect run to become Richmond Junior Girls Volleyball champions but the city’s most competitive league ensured it was no easy task.

The Wildcats rallied for a thrilling five-set win over the McRoberts Strikers in Friday’s championship match played at Cambie Secondary.

They took the opening set 25-20 before the Strikers came back to win the next two

— 25-21 and 26-24.

McMath answered the adversity with a 25-15 game four win and that momentum carried over to the fifth set in a 15-4 triumph.

The Wildcats also had their hands full in Tuesday’s semi-final, going the distance to turn back the host Crusaders 3-2. McRoberts advanced to the final with a win over the Steveston-London Sharks.

The Wildcats, Strikers and Sharks now

turn their attention to the Vancouver and District Championships. The eight-team tournament goes Thursday at Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver.

Elsewhere, McRoberts defeated McMath to win the city juvenile title and will now host today’s V&D Championships The single knockout format begins with quarter-final matches at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The semis go at 5:30 p.m. and the final at 6:30 p.m.
