Wow, that’s some sordid reading. I could imagine Netflix lining up to secure the rights for a House of Cards kind of political drama.

I’m talking, of course, about Darryl Plecas’ bombshell report that explains why he, as Speaker of the House, had the B.C. Legislatures’ clerk, Craig James, and Sergeantat-Arms, Gary Lenz, frog-marched off the grounds of the provincial parliament on Nov. 20.

At the time, he pointed to a RCMP investigation, but many felt he had over-stepped his bounds, particularly given no one else seemed to know what was going on — including James and Lenz.

The whole ordeal had the legislature reeling because while “clerk” might not sound like the most prestigious job title, when it comes to the legislative bureaucracy, it’s about as high as you can get. It’s basically the CEO of parliament. Meanwhile, the Sergeant-at-Arms is head of security — again, no slouch job.

So now the report is out and, as Plecas predicted, it’s having folks choking on their lunch — actually he said “throw up.” Regardless, the alleged accounts of lavish spending of taxpayers’ money and complete disregard for protocol are indeed nauseating. We’re talking cabinets full of high-end scotch paid for by us and “business trip” where almost no business is done.

The local angle is, of course, our own Linda Reid, MLA for Richmond South. Reid was the Speaker of the House from 2013-2017 and is currently Deputy Speaker. This begs the question, if Plecas was able to uncover all this alleged wrong-doing, then why didn’t Reid?

Moreover, the report singles out a mysterious MLA whose expenses were red-flagged by a legislative assistant. But, according to the report, James shut down further inquiry, saying “we will all wear it” if she was to be investigated.

The MLA is not named in the report, but appears to be Reid. (See page 7)

When asked, Reid said she was never made aware of problems with her expenses and she has no idea why James made that comment. Nevertheless, Green Party leader Andrew Weaver is calling for Reid’s resignation.

And here’s the crazy thing, we’re talking about a $6 cab fare while also claiming mileage, or claiming a meal per diem for a meeting where food was provided — improper yes, but hardly the stuff to bring down a government. Besides, there may be a valid explanation, but the issue for Reid is that since no investigation was held, she had no opportunity to explain herself.

The bigger concern in all this is the opaque relationship between the Speaker and the Clerk, as Plecas outlines. It’s still unclear to me who the Clerk answers to. Reid seemed to say it wasn’t her. She also agreed there is too little oversight of the clerk’s office.

Clearly, this is just the beginning of a complex investigation. The good news is that an investigation is happening.

Calling for a public inquiry Open letter to the Hon. David Eby, Q.C., Attorney General of British Columbia:

Canada reported the median income to house price ratio in much of British Columbia is in excess of 1:15.

We are writing regarding the recent police reports which have been made public, indicating that international drug traffickers are purportedly responsible for laundering billions of dollars each year through the real estate market in the Lower Mainland.

Moreover, large developers have readily admitted that most of their clientele comes from overseas investors who allow their homes and buildings to sit empty for investment-exclusive purposes.

Specifically, the money is obtained through the sale of fentanyl — an incredibly hazardous substance that is responsible for a minimum of 4,000 opioid-related deaths in Canada last year alone, according to figures reported by Health Canada. The vast majority of these deaths involve a fentanyl overdose.

A little research reveals the telltale signs of extensive profiteering and illicit nefarious actions in the area.

Why tax hike with a $3 billion surplus?

With a $2.9 billion surplus, the City of Richmond is asking for a 5.33 per cent tax increase for 2019.

Car-jacking sends woman to hospital Alan Campbell RICHMOND NEWS

A Richmond woman was left injured and shaken after a car-jacking incident at her home Monday morning.

At around 7:30 a.m., the woman, in her mid-40s, was preparing to start the engine of her dark-coloured 2007 Toyota SUV — in the 5000 block of Walton Road, near No. 2 Road and Westminster Highway — when she was approached by a suspect wearing dark clothing.

The victim, who was taken to hospital, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was visibly shaken from the incident.

After extensive patrols, Richmond Mounties were unable to find the vehicle and notified neighbouring police forces to be on the lookout for the vehicle, with officers being warned to exercise caution.

The vehicle was later found just before 9 a.m. in Vancouver, near Boundary Road and East Hastings Street, by the Vancouver Police Department.

Reid defends time as Speaker RICHMOND NEWS

Suspended Clerk of the Legislative Assembly Craig James allegedly intervened to shut down an investigation into travel and meal expense violations by former Speaker of the House Linda Reid on the basis that “we will all wear it,” if it came to light.

Reid said Wednesday the whistleblower (her former legislative assistant) never spoke to her about improper expense files. She called the allegations “unfounded.”

In a special report released Monday, Speaker of the House Darryl Plecas outlined how James “shut down” a whistleblower’s claim that Reid improperly billed travel and meal expenses to the Legislature, which James manages.

Plecas’ report to the Legislative Assembly Management Committee concerning allegations of financial misconduct by James and Sergeant-at-Arms Gary Lenz, does not explicitly name Reid, rather it refers to her as “the MLA.”

As well, the unnamed legislative assistant who Plecas says made the claim has come forward to some members of the media confirming that Reid is “the MLA” referred to in the report.

The report notes the speaker has supervisory jurisdiction over the clerk, but can’t discipline or terminate him or her, adding that there seems to be “tension” between this supervisory role and the Speaker’s reliance on the clerk for help in running the legislative proceedings.

Reid said she “didn’t know” what James meant by saying “we will wear it all” if she was to be investigated.

Reid claimed she was likely “the most transparent Speaker” in B.C. history, noting she brought LAMC meetings into a public room.

But she acknowledged the clerk’s expense records remain out of the public eye. And she conceded during her time no one was overseeing the clerk’s office budget, other than the clerk.

“Moreover, if the Speaker’s ability to provide objective oversight is compromised by a close friendship with the Clerk, then it potentially creates a situation where there is no effective scrutiny of the most powerful employee of the organization,” the report states.

“Apparently that’s the case,” said Reid, adding LAMC votes on the overall legislature budget.

Linda Reid claimed she was likely “the most transparent Speaker” in B.C. history.

But semi-redacted travel expense documents concerning “the MLA” in Plecas’ report (dubbed exhibit 23) align exactly with Reid’s public disclosures on the government website.

Moreover, Plecas describes the relationship between the Speaker and the clerk as one open to potential conflict of interest.

Glacier Media spoke to Reid, the MLA for Richmond South Centre, at her office in Richmond on Wednesday where she declared her “track record has been clean throughout this whole process.”

Notably, Reid also claimed that she “relied less” on James’ advice over her term “as more issues gave me cause to pause.”

The issue of “the MLA” referred to in the 76-page report is only one of many that point to an apparent disregard for protocol and lavish spending by James and Lenz, who have been on paid administrative leave since November.

If allegations in the report are proven, it raises questions as to how James and Reid conducted themselves inside the House during Reid’s four-year term as speaker, from 2013 to 2017.

Plecas alleges James and Lenz made personal purchases including expensive suits, claimed for trips “with questionable business rationales” and hundreds of thousands of dollars in “inappropriate payouts,” and misappropriated alcohol.

Coun. Carol Day suggested council refer the motion back to staff, saying she had more questions than answers. She pointed out there was no input from stakeholders in the staff report and asked how many storeys the building would be.

According to the staff report, if council approves a budget larger than $8 million, they would cancel or postpone other capital projects. They noted construction costs have risen in the past year.

Coun. Alexa Loo questioned from which capital projects the extra $5 million would come from and suggested she’d support the $13 million option if the Phoenix Net Loft project were scrapped.

The two larger options increase the capacity to care for animals — 16 dogs, 36 cats, eight rabbits and 10-12 small animals.

Farmworker homes on Richmond agricultural land will require permission from the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), and local bylaws might require the

endorsement of council as well.

Richmond city council gave first reading last week to a set of bylaws that will bring Agricultural Land Reserve secondary home rules in line with new rules coming from the ALC. The provincial legislation

created a “clash,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, between the ability to get a building permit through the city for a second dwelling and the lack of permission from the province for such a building.

“It’s getting in line with the provincial legislation,” Bro-

die said.

The bylaw would amend the OCP and the zoning bylaw removes the provision to build an extra home for farmworkers, requiring anyone wishing to do so to first apply to the city and then to the

“We seem to keep getting into (farmers’) nose about how they do

their business what they’re growing, how they’re growing it, and on and on and on,” she added.

On Dec. 19, council halted any building permits for farmworker homes in the ALR that would be contrary to the proposed bylaw, effective Dec. 27.

Stephen Hai Peng Chen, also known as Hoy Pang Chan, is accused in the civil forfeiture suit, filed earlier this month, of using money derived from the illegal drug trade to buy and pay off properties in Richmond and Vancouver.

Chan, who used to live on Lansdowne Road, has yet to file a response to the lawsuit and the allegations contained within it have not been proven in court.

In the lawsuit, B.C.’s civil forfeiture office is trying to seize an East 5th Avenue house and West 42nd Street apartment, both in Vancouver, with an assessed combined value of $2.7 million.

It is also asking to seize more than $67,000 in cash. According to the court documents, Chan’s parents, Xiong Guang Chen and Jue Ming Chen, are named as owners of the properties in question.

Included in the lawsuit are references to how Chan laundered “...the proceeds from his drug trafficking activities (and), at times with his parents, purchased real (estate) and registered mortgages against title to these properties.”

During an RCMP’s “E-Pirate” investigation in 2015, Chan was identified as one of the clients of an alleged illegal money services business in Richmond, called Silver International, which operated out of a business centre on Cooney Road.

According to a separate civil lawsuit, Silver International was allegedly laundering as much as $220 million a year for its clients.

Court documents say an analysis of ledgers seized at Silver International by the RCMP indicate Chan deposited $5.31 million and withdrew $2.27 million between June 1 and Oct. 1, 2015.

However, according to documents in the suit, an analysis of his tax returns, from 2006 to 2012, showed he had an average reported annual income of about $37,000.

million at Silver International — Oct. 15, 2015 — police also seized $60,010 in cash found in a bag hidden in a clothes dryer in Chan’s Lansdowne Road home.

Chan was arrested the next day in his car and almost $4,000 he had on him was seized.

The lawsuit claims, in August 2015, that Chan bought a Richmond home on Katsura Street — near Garden City Road and Westminster Highway — with mortgage financing and $84,000 in cash, before selling the property two months later.

Other details of how Chan allegedly moved money around CROWN LAWSUIT included the obtaining of a $1.35 million bank credit line, with his parents, on the East 5th Avenue home and then using the credit and nearly $370,000 in cash to buy the West 42nd property.

Chan was arrested in a separate 2015 RCMP investigation in Kelowna — dubbed E-NAOS — on allegations of drug trafficking.

Tarsem Singh Jawanda, who pleaded guilty to drug trafficking as a result of the investigation, met with Chan to pick up bags and boxes containing kilograms of the synthetic drug MDMA for sale, according to court documents.

Afterwards, Jawanda would meet Chan to pay him money for the drugs received from undercover officers, say the court filings. Chan has been charged in the E-NAOS investigation with drug trafficking and that case is still before the courts, according to the court documents.

Chan has a criminal record dating back to 1990 that includes convictions for assault with a weapon; assault causing bodily harm; possession of property obtained by crime; making, having or dealing in instruments of counterfeiting; and extortion.

Widows plea for bench boys ‘reunion’

Standing over a park bench looking out to Finn Slough and the Fraser River’s south arm, Margaret Galawan fought back the tears while recalling how close her late husband, Ray, was with his former high school buddies and lifelong Richmondite friends, Cliff Barclay and Tom Ross.

“They were such good friends for so many years and it would just be a crime to separate them now.”

Lynne made an impassioned plea to Richmond city council for help, with Coun. Bill McNulty now vowing to look into the case on the widow’s behalf.

She lost her other half last March, while the husbands of Bonnie Ross and Lynne Barclay passed away last November and 10 years ago, respectively.

After Cliff’s death a decade ago, Lynne dedicated a City of Richmond park bench at the slough – near Dyke and No. 4 roads - in his memory, complete with two plaques.

Not long after the Barclays’ close friend, Ray, died suddenly last March, Lynne offered to exchange one of Cliff’s plaques to have Ray “sitting” right next to him.

And when the last of the tight trio, Tom, passed in November, all three widows agreed it would be fitting to have their late husbands re-united on the park bench, overlooking the slough where they spent a large chunk of their time together.

There’s only one thing in the way of their memorial – the city’s maximum two-plaque rule, which came into place in 2003, before being updated in April last year.

“The city are OK with Ray’s plaque going up, it’s the third one that’s the issue,” Margaret told the Richmond News, adding that Ray’s plaque is ready to go, but the city was waiting for the spring to repair the bench.

“We were told that people might find it uncomfortable lean-

ing against (three) plaques, so they don’t want too many on there.

“Maybe there’s a better reason that I haven’t heard of yet.

The reason we were given was ridiculous. If people are uncomfortable, go and sit on another bench.

“Ray was down here all the time. He would cut the grass every weekend, making sure it was neat and tidy; the city didn’t do too much down here.

“I don’t come down that often since Ray died, but I might come more (if his plaque goes up). It’s still quite close (to his passing), I’m not quite ready yet.”

Bonnie said the two-plaque rule was “dumb, quite frankly.”

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said an option has been given to Lynne to “celebrate all three individuals on a single plaque” and still keep her one plaque with the quote about Finn Slough, which would allow her to stay within the twoplaque limit.

As for why the rule came about in the first place, Townsend said the policy is required to “ensure consistency and common look across the many memorial benches. Allowing additional plaques could also pose additional maintenance challenges.”

Why aren’t we saving enough?

An online publication called The Leaderpost recently published an interesting article on retirement saving. The author, Jason Heath, explored the reasons we are apparently not saving enough for our retirement.

The World Economic Forum stated in a 2017 paper that, to live to age 100 comfortably, we need to have a savings rate of 10-15%. In Canada, we have averaged only a 7.3% saving rate since 1981, and the rate has been dropping in recent years.

Mr. Heath refers to research into “nudging” us into saving more and avoiding irrational spending decisions. The question then, he says, is whether there is more than just bad decision-making affecting our abilities to save. He cites “shocks” such as job loss, divorce and health, which affect our saving rates over the long term. To these, I would add the rise in real estate values in the Lower Mainland, raising the cost of accommodation (including rent). It is simply hard to save!

Though a long-term approach is best when considering retirement finances, change is inevitable but difficult to plan for. So in my opinion, getting ongoing advice from different sources (Accountants, Financial planners, Bankers) is probably useful, as is setting aside some minimum amount of funds regularly.

Canada Post has released its Year of the Pig stamp in honour of the upcoming Lunar New Year, and some Richmondites have already added it to their collections.

The 2019 design features Zhu Bajie, or Pigsy, a character from the 16th-century Chinese novel A Journey to the West.

“Canada Post is proud to join Canadians of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and other East Asian heritage celebrating the Lunar New Year,” said Jo-Anne Polak with Canada Post.

The annual tradition of releasing special-edition stamps to mark the Lunar New Year started in 1997 for the Year of the Ox. Joyce Ang, a sales administrator with the Richmond News, has been collecting the colourful stamps for more than 15 years. She started when a

Joey Kwan positively beamed with pride as she revealed the last of her 12 “babies” to the public.

Each year for the last 12 years, Kwan, Aberdeen Centre’s director of public relations, has helped create each of the dozen, colourful people-sized characters that represent the animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Every year, she has kept her creation up her sleeve, only to reveal the finished design in the weeks leading up to the Lunar New Year, which is Feb. 5 this year.

And, seeing as this is her 12th year at Aberdeen Centre, the last of her zodiac “babies” – the pig — has been unveiled in a Chinese garden in the shopping centre’s central atrium and takes pride of place, in sequence, alongside his 11 zodiac siblings.

“All these characters, I have been saving up for the past 12 years at Aberdeen, now they are all revealed together for the first time,” smiled Kwan.

“The first year I came to Aberdeen, I developed the mouse and then developed them all; I worked with our designer over the years to create each one. We developed them together; they are like our babies.”

Taking the Richmond News on a tour around the “garden,” Kwan introduced each one as if it was a member of her family.

Here’s what she had to say about each of them, right up to this year, the Year of the Pig:

“Western people are very interested in our zodiac signs. Every show I put on (at the centre) starts from my mind.”

As well as the people-sized Chinese zodiac animals, the garden is littered with giant gold coins, giant mandarin plants and cherry blossom trees.

Monkey: He is very energetic, is nonstop and intelligent;

Pig: Is very gentle, like the lamb, works well with people and has a good temper.

Chicken: A very patient person who loves detail and fashion;

Kwan said the design of her characters is very much created with an “East meets West” theme.

Dog: He is a stable and faithful person, who likes to stick to the rules and guards his homeland well;

“Aberdeen Centre is very much East meets West; so you can see the characters

Tiger: He is very courageous and brave and not afraid to take on a challenge;

“I created this scene for selfies and Instagram hits, as well,” Kwan added.

Aberdeen Centre’s Chinese New Year (CNY) events kick off Wednesday, Jan. 30 with the Chinese New Year Flower & Gift Fair, which runs to Feb. 5.

Beyond the flower and gift fair, Aberdeen starts ramping up for CNY on Monday, Feb. 4 with countdown celebrations starting at 8:30 p.m., including Fairchild Radio’s pre-countdown stage show and personal blessings from the God of Fortune at 10:30 p.m.

Aberdeen’s Golden Dragon and Lion Dance takes place on CNY itself on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 11 a.m. in the courtyard.

Rabbit: An agile, cute and friendly person; Dragon: Is symbolic of being loyal; everyone likes to have a son born in the Year of the Dragon;

And on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10, Aberdeen plays host to the CNY Cultural Showcase Celebration, which features performances from the BC Chinese Music Association and Vancouver Academy of Dance on the Saturday and Vancouver Youth Philharmonic Orchestra and Colors of Dance Academy on the Sunday.

Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) will be hosting its annual Lunar New Year Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 9.

There will also be Japanese drumming, Chinese calligraphies, Korean ceramic making and western painting demonstrations.

It’s also RCCS’ 30th anniversary and it’ll be holding its big New Year event at Lansdowne Centre, with a colourful opening ceremony scheduled for noon that day.

Community organizations will also host exhibition booths at the event.

After the opening ceremony, there will be an array of performances, right up to 5 p.m.

This year’s celebration kicks off at 11 a.m., with the money god handing out red packets and a variety of multicultural performances ranging from the lion dance, Chinese opera, Chinese cultural folk dance, Korean Taekwondo, Japanese Taiko, Irish/Polish folk dance and Filipino folk dance.

The Lunar New Year is a 15-day celebration starting on the first day of the first lunar month.

This year is the Year of the Pig and lunar New Year’s Day falls on Feb. 5. The Lunar New Year is an important festival for many Asian cultures where people return home on Lunar New Year’s Eve to dine with family.

Meaning of the pig The pig is the 12th of the 12 Zodiac animals, and myths tell some rather amusing stories about how the pig earned its place in the pecking order.

One such myth suggests Jade the Emperor invited 12 animals to his party, and the order of those animals would be determined by when they arrived. As the legend goes, the pig overslept and was the last to arrive.

Another myth suggests the pig was the last animal to arrive at the party because a wolf destroyed its house.

But revelers should not mistake the pig’s placement for bad fortune. In fact, according to Travel China Guide, the pig has been regarded as wealth because it has no plan to harm others. ChineseNewYear.net also notes that pigs’ chubby faces and big ears are also symbolic of fortune.

“I love theatre because it can start different dialogues; it can bridge gaps between peoples and cultures, and can represent different people’s voices,” said Sy.

Jovanni Sy, the artistic director of Gateway Theatre, will be directing his last show next month before stepping down from his position on Feb. 15.

“And the beautiful thing is, you literally have to be in the same space with other people to enjoy it.”

His replacement is as yet unknown, but newly hired interim producer Barbara Tomasic will oversee the roll-out of Gateway’s artistic programming when Sy leaves.

“It was a very hard (decision to leave),” Sy told the Richmond News on the main stage of Gateway Theatre on Tuesday.

“I’ve enjoyed this theatre, I like the people I work with. (Although) it was a lot of fun, I just knew it was time to try new artistic challenges.”

Sy, who has been director for seven years, will spend more time on playwriting and acting — passions he found challenging to find time for during the dedicated full-time role he’s leaving behind.

Despite just moving to Richmond and settling down, Paige Gratland has already had a series of workshop and activity ideas she wants to do with Richmond residents.

As the fourth “artist in residence,” Gratland was invited by the City of Richmond to live in the vintage Branscombe House at Steveston Highway and Railway Avenue for a year and share her experiences with the community.

“I would love to host workshops on some of the techniques I use in making my artwork, such as hot foil stamping and leather stitching,” Gratland told the Richmond News.

Gratland calls herself a conceptual artist, who starts with an idea first, then figures out the best media form to follow the idea — she never limits herself to certain media.

Having worked on projects in video, performance, sculpture and printmaking, Gratland has had her works exhibited at art fairs or sold at Art Metropole (AM), a not-for-profit organisation selling works of artists.

“Instead of being like a gallery, (AM) is like a gallery shop, selling smaller (items) such as sculptures, books and sawed donuts. It’s like a collectivity of the worlds,” she said.

Gratland refers to herself as a “queer, feminist artist and labourer,” whose artwork is often labour extensive and related to “the com-

munity I belong to.”

“As a queer person, there is always some explaining and translation of your culture that you have to do, just like any other people who are different from the mainstream culture,” she said.

“Part of my work is, after responding to something I see in the world, I will take that thing and appropriate it to kind of reflect a more female-centred, feminist perspective.”

For example, she and her friend did a Tipping project — a collection of portraits of women’s breasts, after seeing an image in a shop with women’s breasts that they found “kind of degrading.”

“These (portraits) have a very different feeling than the one we saw — They are more expressive and personal,” she said.

But her projects are never about a certain community — they are open for anybody to participate in a way that’s meaningful to them, according to Gratland.

In her Tipping project, they had a woman who survived breast cancer, and a senior who saw being a mother as one of the most important roles in her life — they both wanted to document their bodies in a new way.

Gratland said she looks forward to working with local residents on some of the fun art projects at her place.

“One of the reasons I became an artist is because I really see the potential that creative experiences have to bring people together.”

Students brainstorm to save bookstore at biz competition Teens tackle Indigo’s financial calamity ones that already exist.

Dozens of Richmond students devised business solutions for Canadian book chain Indigo Saturday, suggesting how it could reverse its declining revenues at the first-ever Elevate Business Case Competition.

The students, working for a tense few hours at Richmond Secondary, delved into the business’ 2012 problems with the hopes of presenting a solution to impress a panel of judges.

The day was entirely organized by students on the Richmond Student District Council Organization (RSDCO), who lined up keynote speakers, recruited judges and chose the case based on a real-life scenario Indigo faced seven years ago.

“I thought this would almost be impossible. I thought everything would go wrong the day of and it might be a big flop. But it was the complete opposite. Everybody was able to pull together and execute,” said Hasan Altaf, RSDCO finance chair.

The Grade 12 student loves the thrill of case competitions, and wanted to create one open to all public school students in Richmond. He said this one could be less intimidating than province-wide or national

About 70 students attended, and they broke off into groups of three to five to come up with a marketing strategy to help the Canadian book chain at a time when it was struggling.

Some students suggested the company add cafes to its stores, some explored subscription services and others looked into how it could wade into the e-book market.

“I was actually really impressed. The slide decks were really professional and they put a lot of thought into the solutions,” Altaf said.

In the end, a group of three students won first place because they backed up their solution with numbers and presented it succinctly in the four-minute window.

“Our vision is for students to scale new heights in business, marketing and finance while networking with professionals and gaining noteworthy experience to support their future endeavours,” Joey Huang, RSDCO chair, wrote in an email.

RSDCO is a relatively new student organization, formalized in September, that aims to help students discover their passions and develop leadership skills.

Employers in Richmond are increasingly unable to recruit and keep workers due to the city’s high cost of housing, according to a recent Richmond Chamber of Commerce survey.

Eighty-seven per cent of business owners who responded to the survey said housing affordability has “moderately or significantly” impacted their ability to recruit talent – that’s up from 62 per cent in 2016.

“This is a very concerning jump,” said Barbara Tinson, chair of the Chamber.

“To have a 25-per-cent increase in employers who are feeling squeezed by housing in just two and a half years, you have to sit up and take notice.”

The survey also showed that 76 per cent of employers who responded are struggling to retain employees due to housing affordability, a 16-per-cent increase from 2016.

In addition, the majority of respondents felt that all three levels of government have been responding poorly to this issue. “...we urgently need to create more diverse housing options in Richmond,” said Tinson. At the same time, we need to begin the “immediate redevelopment of the George Massey corridor, used by tens of thousands of employees who commute daily to Richmond.”

Big four game stretch starts tonight for Sockeyes The Richmond Sockeyes are ready to get back to work with four of their biggest games of the regular season, starting tonight at Minoru Arenas.

The Sockeyes have a home-and-home series with the Pacific Junior Hockey League leading North Vancouver Wolf Pack that also includes a trip to the North Shore on Saturday night.

It’s then off to Ladner next Tuesday to take on the second place Delta Ice Hawks before returning home to host the fourth place Abbotsford Pilots two

Richmond (25-8-2-1) trail the Wolf Pack (30-8-01) by eight points and the Ice Hawks (26-7-2-3) by six but have three games in hand on each of team.

With a significant lead after his short and skating last on the second day, the Grade 8 Richmond Christian student could have taken a conservative approach and still won gold.

But that’s not what Skate Canada wants to see when it comes time for international assignments.

The 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships was much more than winning a gold medal for Wesley Chiu. It was an opportunity to show everyone why he is an up-and-coming talent on the country’s biggest stage.

“It was a challenge for myself to see if I could put in a new jump at the last minute. I had been landing them a lot in practice so my confidence helped,” said Chiu.

“There were a lot of Skate Canada officials there. I had to show them that I am ready for Junior,” smiled Chiu.

“My goal (all season) was to take each competition one at a time and peak at nationals.”

It was with that mindset the Connaught Skating Club member headed to New Brunswick last week and dominated the Novice Men’s event. His short (52.73) and long (94.10) programs were both personal best scores — resulting in 146.83 total and a whopping 28 point cushion over his nearest rival.

Finishing on top of the field of 18 skaters was to the surprise of no one. Chiu had won the Skate Canada Challenge a month earlier in December. However, there was no holding back in one of his final skates at the Novice level.

Chiu upped his degree of difficulty significantly, including adding a second triple lutz to his long program. He then went out and executed both skates to about 95 percent of his ability resulting in his wide margin of victory.

Murphy added his prize student’s top marks also reflected his complete performance. Former international skater and Toronto-based Joey Russell did the choreography for Chiu’s long program.

He was born in a log house in Northern Saskatchewan on March 21, 1923. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife Marie.

He was also the last of his immediate family, Kenneth Reid, Gertrude MacDonald and the twins, Verna Caunce and Evelyn Dennis. His guidance, wisdom and love will be missed by everyone he touched. He is survived by his daughter Lynne (Roland) L’Heureux, his son, Donnie (Jennifer) Reid, his two grandchildren, Devon and Ashley (Clayton) L’Heureux and his wondrous four greatgrandchildren, Quinten L’Heureux, Gabrielle, Bradley and Elizabeth Tietzmann.

Bernie was a devoted husband, who loved travelling, family gatherings and telling his stories to all that would listen. He had an amazing life, living through the Great Depression and the Second World War. He and his wife loved the summers spent at the Jolly Acre on Mara Lake where he taught endless kids how to water ski. He became a Freemason in 1948 and wore his 60 Year Jewel with pride. After the war, he became a teacher and then an Administrator in Richmond, B.C. There was nowhere in the City of Richmond that he could walk where he didn’t know someone. He loved his ‘kids’ and was a fixture at numerous reunions, including a 65 Year Reunion where the ‘kids’ were 84 years old.

Lynne and Donnie would like to thank the staff in the Palliative Care Unit of the Surrey Memorial Hospital for their kindness, warmth and compassion for our Dad and to us; these are special people.

There will be a private graveside Memorial Service on Saturday, January 26th at the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, B.C. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to your personal charity in our Dad’s name.
