Have you ever stepped out of the house, looked around and realized just how much trust we place in total strangers?

You could be standing at a crosswalk, waiting to step onto the road, and a driver slows to let you cross. What if he or she decides, “nah, I’m running late, he’s getting run over today.”

What if you’re behind the wheel and the driver on the opposite side of the road, coming towards you, decides driving on the left is more convenient and smashes into you head-on?

Public hygiene? How many times have you sat on public transit and watched people cough and sneeze into their hands and then touch the seat in front?

And then there’s touching raw fruit and vegetables in a supermarket or the doors at a shopping mall, trusting that the people before have washed their hands and are not carrying a potentially deadly and communicable disease.

Our daily routine is proliferated with examples of handing our lives over to random people, with little or no question.

Why do we feel comfortable with such apparent abandon of our fragile mortality?

It could be because there are, for the most part, rules in place for all the above (aside from wiping hands on the bus).

Most, I’d hope, know to drive on the right side and not accelerate at a busy crosswalk – because there are consequences.

We’ve kind of agreed to drive on that side of the road and to stop when a sign tells you to do just that. It’s an arrangement we’ve made with all (OK, most) of the other drivers.

So it’s disconcerting that we don’t have the same rules in place when it comes to being vaccinated for potentially deadly — and contagious — diseases, such as measles, which has reared its head in Richmond and Vancouver recently.

It’s startling to see how many places in our city were potentially at risk, just from two infected people’s movements.

People born before 1970 are said to be immune (due to getting the measles in childhood), but why are we trusting strangers with the health and lives of vulnerable, at-risk people?

If I held the door for you at Lansdowne Centre, should I have to say, “it’s OK, I’m vaccinated”? Should I have to prove it?

Or show my birth certificate? No, I shouldn’t, because that’s ridiculous. So it leads us to mandatory vaccinations.

I’m all for freedom of choice and I understand, to a certain extent, the reservations of parents with the MMR vaccine and the albeit flimsy links to autism.

But at what point do people’s freedoms impinge on my right to walk out the door, use the Canada Line or browse through the apple section at Langley Farm Market, without fear of contracting what should be an eradicated disease?

The B.C. government is in the process of bringing forth a mandatory registry at schools to track vaccinations.

It won’t make it mandatory for students to get vaccinated, but at least parents can then see what the picture looks like.

Well done, RCMP for ticketing rolling stoppers Dear Editor, Re: “Rolling stop in Richmond not worth a ticket,” Letters, Feb. 21 To the officer that issued Mr. Kurian a ticket, I’d like to express my thanks.

There is so much wrong with Mr. Kurian’s letter that I don’t know where to start.

since there was no traffic, it shouldn’t matter. It does. Should we let a person drive impaired because there was no traffic? The point of the police issuing you a ticket is to make you aware that you are driving unsafely and putting yourself and others at risk. Was this incident going to cause a crash? No, but next time it might.

Let’s address the statement that a rolling stop is not worth a ticket: All tickets are worth it. There’s a reason there is a law against it…because it causes crashes.

If Mr. Kurian had done any research, he would know that rolling stops are linked to crash causation and often it is a pedestrian that’s hit. It is a common, lazy habit.

Finally, as to Mr. Kurian’s belief he should have been issued a warning at most. If I was that officer, I would have given you a ticket, too. Clearly, you were angry with this encounter — you wrote a letter to the local paper. You have demonstrated no remorse or understanding of what you did wrong.

Secondly, Mr. Kurian seems to justify that,

Dear Editor, Re: “Rolling stop in Richmond not worth a ticket,” Letters, Feb. 21 I applaud the RCMP for enforcing traffic signs and lights. If you think that they have a quota system, why don’t you speak to the officer’s superiors to get an answer to that; otherwise, don’t accuse them without having facts to back it up. But that isn’t really the point here.

Many of us tire of seeing drivers roll through stop signs or signals and compromise the flow of traffic.

Not all stop situations require a full stop, but it would be utter chaos to allow drivers to be the judge of whether they should stop

or not; hence, apply the rules to all situations.

Some drivers develop bad habits, i.e. rolling through stop signs or lights, running yellow lights (or red), entering the intersection illegally when there is already a vehicle waiting ahead of you, etc.

Just because they are not caught doing it, does not make it legal. A rolling stop is not worth the ticket, so break the habit and you won’t have to worry about getting one.

Drivers, such as yourself, who feel entitled to drive without following the rules that are meant for all, sometimes put others at risk.

Good guy Don’t take away my AirBnB shows great example Dear Editor,

Re: “Richmond illegal hotel ‘more active’ after being fined,” News, Feb. 21.

I run an AirBnB in Richmond and it works very well.

When I travel, I use AirBnB and it is nice to host other travelers as well. I love meeting new people from different parts of the world.

for setting such a great example for my young daughter, who was talking about this all evening, and also to myself.

Dear Editor, Kudos to the gentleman who approached a panhandler in front of a local convenience store and asked him if he could buy him a sandwich.

Hotels are very expensive and can make travel plans impossible for some on tighter budgets. Myself included.

I do have a driveway that I get guests to park in, but sometimes they need to use the street. It’s ok, they won’t be there for long.

I plan on following suit and paying it forward!

It’s not just the raccoons Dear Editor, Thank you for printing those rebuttal letters about the demand to cull raccoons.

I really liked the one telling readers to be responsible for their own grass issues.

However, it is not just raccoons that are looking for food in the grass.

I watched in total awe of the teamwork by crows, who systematically destroyed the neighbour’s grass in an afternoon.

They first quartered the grass cutting dotted lines with their beaks.

Then two used their beaks to push up the grass, while the other two rolled it back with their feet.

After a while, they switched places.

While crows are not my favourite birds, I was so impressed by their skills.

A Richmond-based translator has been charged with fraud after allegedly helping hundreds of people cheat their driving knowledge tests.

Amjed Jamo, 50, appeared at Richmond Provincial Court last week charged with committing fraud under $5,000 over a five-month period ending Nov. 3, 2017.

ICBC-approved translator, is accused of helping mostly Arabic speakers during their tests with a series of codes and hand gestures.

An investigation by the RCMP and ICBC alleges that Jamo received a fee for his help.

Up to 300 drivers had to re-take their test, with ICBC declaring many licences invalid — almost quarter of the drivers that had passed failed a re-test.

An ICBC spokesperson told CTV that the “overwhelming majority” of its 600 approved translators, that can work in 50 languages and dialects, follow its Code of Conduct. Jamo is due back in court next month.

Richmond needs Chinese Canadian museum: Au Daisy Xiong DXIONG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM As the province is putting together plans to build a Chinese Canadian museum in Vancouver’s Chinatown, a Richmond councillor is calling for a similar museum in Richmond.

Coun. Chak Au expressed his opinion to

George Chow, Minister of State for Trade in the B.C. government, at a consultation session on the museum in Richmond this month.

“It’s only logical for Richmond to have a role to play in this Chinese Canadian Museum, because there is a long history of Chinese Canadians in our city,” said Au. He said Richmond, in contrast to many other cities, has kept many artefacts that can tell a story about Chinese Canadian history.

“We still have the Chinese bunkhouse, the cannery, so the history still lives on in Richmond,” said Au. “That’s why I think it’s important for the provincial government not to overlook Richmond.”

Richmond are different from those who (went) to Kamloops — those who went to Kamloops were for the gold rush. In Richmond, they were here...for farming,” said Au.

Au believes there shouldn’t just be one Chinese Canadian museum in Vancouver Chinatown, but instead, have multiple ones in different cities differentiated by themes.

Chow didn’t respond to Au’s suggestion directly during the meeting, but said he would include it in the feedback report handed to the province regarding the museum.

Vancouver Coastal Health informed the public of two new confirmed cases of measles Sunday, bringing the current Metro Vancouver outbreak to a total of 13 cases. One of those infected people, the health authority said, was at the Richmond toy store from about 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 and 18.

On Monday, a printed notice from VCH was displayed near the store’s entrance.

“We are recommending that anyone who was present on those days, and not immune to measles, should monitor for early symptoms…and ensure that their immunizations are up to date,” the note read.

A manager at the store referred Richmond News’ questions to the company’s head office in Toronto, but they did not respond to requests for comment before publication.

Just outside the Toys R Us entrance, at the Lansdowne food court, some people eating with their children said the ex-

“Realistically, they should be posting a little bit of warnings around here. I had no idea there was an (exposure risk) at the Toys R Us.”

However, they are able to get a medicine called immune globulin that reduces the risk of severe illness due to measles if given within six days of exposure, according to VCH. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed a few days later by a rash that starts on the face and spreads to the chest. Symptoms usually develop between seven and 21 days after exposure.

The virus can cause serious complications, including inflammation of the brain, convulsions, deafness or brain damage.

The good news is that most Canadians are vaccinated against measles.

The BC Pharmacy Association is reporting increased demand for MMR vaccines amid the outbreak, and a number of Richmond pharmacies said they’ve run out.

But a VCH spokesperson said there’s no shortage of vaccines across the health region.

Darryl Plecas, Speaker of the House at the B.C. legislature, claims he had no axe to grind with Linda Reid, MLA for Richmond South Centre.

Plecas made his remark about Reid last week, in reference to his January report about alleged lavish spending by two former staffers in the Speaker’s office.

He released his initial report in January and the two staffers, Craig James and Gary Lenz, responded two weeks later.

That is a lie.

Plecas wrote a counter-response, and the Legislative Assembly Management Committee voted to release all the documents last Thursday.

“I left Ms. Reid’s name out of my Preliminary Report because my concern was with Mr. Lenz and Mr. James’ conduct, not Ms. Reid’s.”

Reid’s expenses were referred to in the January report as a staffer had complained to Plecas that Lenz had dismissed a concern about them.

Reid’s name was not mentioned in the report, but Glacier Media saw the connection between identical receipts – those in the report and those submitted by Reid.

In his counter response, Plecas writes “Mr. James suggests that I have an axe to grind with Ms. Reid in raising these matters, or was ‘gleeful’ about the matter.

Currently, there is an RCMP investigation into the activities in the Speaker’s office as well as a workplace review.

Richmond Centre-South MLA Linda Reid has been under scrutiny since a report was released by the Speaker of the House into an expenses scandal.

In addition, the auditor general, Carol Bellringer, will perform a forensic audit and a judge will be asked to conduct an independent review process.

The Richmond News reached out to Reid for comment, but hadn’t received a reply at the time of publication.

The City of Richmond is unlikely to shift its position on banning the possession and sale of shark fin products, despite neighbouring Delta being on the verge of a bylaw.

Earlier this month, the City of Delta passed the third reading of its bylaw which will ban the possession and sale of shark fin products.

Its move increases the number of cities in Metro Vancouver supporting such a ban to five.

There has been ongoing debate about banning the delicacy in Richmond, where shark fins are sometimes served in the city’s many Chinese restaurants. However, city officials and politicians don’t think a ban is an option. “(There was a) 2013 (staff) report. At that time, there were a number of reasons for not pursuing a ban,” Ted Townsend, the city’s spokesperson, told the Richmond News.

“We are not aware of any change that would cause us to alter this opinion,” said Townsend.

Coun. Chak Au echoed him, saying that shark fin products are a national issue and it is “very difficult” for municipal governments to ban them, as they are currently legal in Canada.

“I’ll give you an example. If it is legal to import and export, what could happen is that, somebody brings it in through the airport, but if it’s not allowed in Richmond, the person cannot leave the airport. It can create that discrepancy,” said Au. “That’s why...at that time, (we were) advised against it by our legal department. It’s very complicated — it’s not just that the city can choose to ban it or not.”

Meanwhile, Delta council sees the chances of being sued over the ban very low, given there are no restaurants serving shark fins in their city, according to Delta councillor Dylan Kruger.

“In Delta, probably unlike in Richmond, there aren’t businesses currently serving shark fin soup, so we are confident that we are not going to receive push back from our business community,” Kruger told the News.

He called the shark fin industry “unsustainable and inhumane,” emphasizing that 73 million sharks are killed every year globally, which equates to 200,000 a day.

“We see the bylaw as an opportunity to continue our advocacy to the federal government to see that the (national) ban moves forward.”

But the story is different in Richmond. One Richmond restaurant owner has already threatened to take the city to court if a shark fin ban is put in place.

“Even if (the ban) happens in Delta, it doesn’t affect anybody,” said David Chung, owner of Richmond’s Jade Seafood Restaurant and president of the Asian Cafe and Restaurant Association.

Some Richmondites scratched their heads this week after receiving 2019 calendars in the mail from their MP Alice Wong — nearly two months into the year.

A few took to social media, questioning the usefulness of getting a calendar near the end of February. Others were displeased at federal money spent on the late calendars.

A spokesperson from Wong’s constituency office, Sacha Peter, told the Richmond News the calendars are one form of “householder,” or mail that MPs can send to communicate with their constituents four times per fiscal year.

“Admittedly, it was a couple weeks later than we actually wanted to get it to them out,” said Peter.

He said they submitted the documents to the House of Commons on Jan. 14, but from there, it’s up to staff in Ottawa to execute the mail-out. The month-long delay before Richmondites received the calendars was outside their control, he said.

The calendar is one of several templates that all 338 MPs have access to. Another common form of householder is a letter written by an MP to constituents. Included with all householders is an offer for residents to write their MP, with free postage, about issues and concerns they may have.

Chung added that such a ban would never happen in Richmond, due to the high volume of people of Chinese ethnicity living in the city.

When asked how he would react if Richmond did try to bring in a ban, Chung said he would absolutely challenge it.

He argued that the world has “excessive” sharks, and that endangered species are already forbidden in a catch, so there is no problem with the shark fin industry.

Au, on the other hand, said he supports a ban, but is counting on the federal government to step up and roll out Bill S-238 to end the importation and exportation of shark fins.

The Bill was passed in the Senate last year, and is now being reviewed by the House of Commons.

“Since shark-finning has been illegal in Canada since 1994, it is only logical that the trading of shark fins should not be left wide open in Canada,” said Au. “People have changed. I don’t see too many people having (shark fins), and I don’t think many Chinese people would have a problem of not eating them.”

Richmond city council is considering putting audio recordings of committee meetings online, so anyone can listen to them at their leisure.

Committee meetings are recorded, but Coun. Kelly Greene thinks the process to listen to them is too onerous, and she has put forward a request to staff to explore having the recordings available online.

Currently, if someone wants to listen to a recording of a Richmond committee meeting, they have to contact the city clerk, go to city hall and listen to it there.

Council meetings, recorded in council chambers, are usually videotaped and archived on the city’s website, but audio recordings done in the Anderson Room — where most committee meetings are held —can only be accessed at city hall.

Having audio recordings available on the city’s website would supplement meeting min-

utes, which Greene called a “distilled end result.”

“Meeting minutes are helpful but they don’t necessarily reflect the breadth of the conversation that happens or the nuances that occur at the table to get to the decisions,” Greene said.

Having the recordings available online would be another way to engage the public, Greene said. Many meetings are at 4 p.m., when the public often have work commitments and can’t get there to listen.

Making people come to listen to the audio recordings at city hall is “a bit onerous for a civilian to be part of the public process, it creates a lot of barriers – I think we can do better,” Greene said.

Greene’s motion at last week’s general purposes committee meeting was supported by a majority of council.

School board seeks feedback on facilities Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM Despite enrolment creeping up in the Richmond school district, thousands of surplus seats are still projected by 2033.

Furthermore, enrolment increases are expected in certain areas, such as the city centre and Hamilton, but not evenly throughout Richmond, which currently has 5,000 empty school seats.

The figures became clear as the district released background documents on its long-range facilities plan last week, with plans to release the draft of the entire document March 13.

The district will consult with the public via open houses, meetings and surveys. The final plan is scheduled to be back in front of the school board in June.

Chair Ken Hamaguchi said the board will be involved in the public consultation process. But, he noted, not much has changed since the last facilities review, although enrolment has increased slightly.

The provincial government has committed, however, to upgrading schools to make them safe, he added.

“We’re expecting our schools to get fixed but they’re not going to just hand over the money,” he said. “You have to be able to justify what you’re doing.”

The background documents don’t give any recommendations for school closures, but there is a note that, if there is a need for “consolidate space,” the process could begin as early as September.

A recommendation from last summer suggested looking at schools for possible “amalgamation” to “reduce District capacity.”

The background documents, available online at SD38. bc.ca, give information about school programs, catchment areas, school populations and school utilization rates.

It also gives information about risk of damage and liquefaction in the event of an earthquake.

School utilizations rates are calculated by looking at the number of classrooms in the school and the number of students. Currently, seven elementary schools are close to or above 100 per cent full – Blair, Cook, Garden City, Homma, Spul’u’kwuks, Whiteside and Wowk.

Schools with the smallest populations are Sea Island, Grauer and Woodward.

Of the 10 high schools, only McMath and Richmond Secondary are close to being 100 per cent full. Cambie and Palmer are at about 50 per cent.

The report also lists the ages of the schools, with the average age of schools in Richmond at 32.66 years. Elementary schools are somewhat older, with the average age at 38.5 years and secondary schools at 26.4 years.

Calculations for school age are done by taking into consideration new and old areas – Brighouse elementary, for example, is listed at being 16.4 years old, but most of the school was rebuilt and opened in 2011, making it eight years old.

However, using a formula to take into consideration its gym, built in 1965, its “normalized age” is 16.4.

The report also gives details on the need for seismic upgrades, noting that 24 elementaries and four high schools are a high risk for liquefaction, that is, the destabilizing of the soil beneath the school, in the event of an earthquake.

The school district’s goal is to have all schools seismically upgraded by 2030.

Open houses will be held in mid-March and in April.

Board looks to reduce number of meetings The Richmond board of education is considering just meeting once a month.

Board chair Ken Hamaguchi has recommended the board only meet on the second Wednesday of the month as a pilot from April to June, and that they remove trustee updates from their agenda. Currently, the board meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

The rationale includes “moving away from increasing staff time,” increasing efficiency and using meeting time better, having less formal discussions at the education committee meetings and more time for trustee workshops.

The pilot from April to June would determine “how it works through the rhythm of the Board’s work and activity,” according to the submission by the board chair.

The item was on Wednesday’s board agenda.

When Judie Schneider picks up her son from school, she often worries that he’ll be “hangry,” or in a bad mood because he didn’t eat enough during the day.

“This is an extremely important issue and I urge every parent to sign and share this petition.”

But it’s not because he forgot his lunch or didn’t like the food, it’s because he doesn’t have enough time to eat, according to Schneider, who says her son’s lunch break is only 15 to 17 minutes long.

“Since kindergarten, I always felt frustrated that he didn’t have enough time to eat, but thought that it was just because he was a slow eater,” Schneider said about her son, who is now in Grade 4.

“Over the years, it has come to my knowledge that it’s not just slow eaters that aren’t finishing their lunches, it’s pretty much across the board.”

Schneider explained that, at her son’s school, they have a “play first” model where students spend time playing outside before eating their lunch. However, they are only given 15 to 17 minutes to come inside, wash their hands, collect their lunch, settle down and eat afterwards.

“Parents have been telling me that it’s normal for them to have their children’s lunch box brought home pretty much half full and when they ask their children what happened, they say they didn’t have enough time,” Schneider said.

The Pokémon Trainers’ Gym at Richmond Public Library’s Cambie branch allows students to train and battle their Pokémons with peers after school every Friday.

The program now has an average of 15 participants every week and in summer, the number can peak to 50.

“Almost like chess, you have to plan several moves ahead.”

McCreedy added that, compared to sitting in front of computers at home, the game brings students together to socialize with others from different schools in a safe environment.

“More adults are familiar with Pokémon Go, which doesn’t include nearly as much strategy as the traditional Pokémon card games and video games,” said McCreedy.

“So many kids were coming in and borrowing the comics and reading the game guide to the characters, I thought, ‘why not put together a club,’” said Steven McCreedy, librarian technician and founder of the program.

He added the Pokémon game can help children develop their reading skills and strategic and critical thinking, while meeting new friends.

Anyone with Pokémon cards or video games can come and battle other Pokémon connoisseurs to “hone their skills,” according to McCreedy.

Dozens turn out It’s going to get so for Coldest Night seedy this Saturday Dozens of Richmondites braved the freezing temperatures Saturday for the Coldest Night of the Year charity walk, raising money to help Richmond’s homeless, hungry and less fortunate.

If you’re looking for something seedy to do this Saturday, then Thompson Community Centre is just the place for you.

Richmond’s walk was led by Chimo Community Services at Gilmore Park United Church, 8161 No. 1 Rd. Participants wore CNOY toques and walked a twokilometre, five-kilometre or 10-kilometre route, with a warm-up celebration meal at the end.

Thousands of participants took part in similar walks in 130 cities across Canada.

This was Chimo’s third year taking part in the Coldest Night of the Year.

The 10th Seedy Saturday event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with 16 vendors and between 200 and 300 people expected to attend.

Richmond’s walk was led by Chimo Community Services at Gilmore Park United Church, in aid of the city’s homeless and hungry.

The event — which is entry by donation — is primarily focused on gardeners and people with an interest in the local eating and growing community.

“People can learn about what’s happening in their community and find out about local (seed) initiatives,” said Sarina Clay-Smith, Urban Agriculture Program coordinator for event organizers Richmond Food Security, a non-profit society.

As well as the many varieties of seeds on sale, there will be two workshops throughout the day:

Noon to 1 p.m.: Ecological benefits of seed saving.

Vendors include Edible Oasis, Steveston Stock and Seed, Salt Spring Seeds, BC Eco Seed Co-op and Kelpman. The Vancouver Master Gardeners will also be in attendance.

Another highlight of the popular annual event is the “community seed library,” where seeds — many of them donated — are “loaned out” with “some education about seed diversity,” added ClaySmith.

“People can take up to three seed packets away, then we ask them to bring some back.”

Seedy Saturday event participants will learn how to choose the best, local seeds, and how to practice “seed sovereignty by saving seeds and having food for years to come.”

People are asked to park in the Burnett secondary parking lot.

The Gift that wasn’t (and kept Mom from eviction) Parents commonly help their children buy a home, perhaps more so in the last decade or so, as real estate prices have climbed. When parents assist their children in this way, it is still typical that there is a mortgage involved and so when parents give their children money to help with the purchase, the lender (whether a Bank, Credit Union or other lender) often will require a “gift letter”.

This letter discloses that the parents’ funds that are being used, are not a gift.

With this disclosure, the lender typically is satisfied that the parents will not claim, in the event the property is sold, that their money has to be returned to them, perhaps before the lender gets their money back. So the lender is protected.

Earlier this month, a case was decided in B.C. Supreme Court, called Iberg v. Claridge. In that case, the gift issue was examined in the context of a Mother son relationship where she advanced funds to help her son purchase a house. It did not end well. However, the case is informative and for any parent looking to help their own child buy a home, useful reading.

How important are relationships – let me count the ways!

This discussion is not a variation of Elizabeth Browning’s famous Facts It is about the tragedy described in the case Brown poem. v.Mother PearceandEstate (whose reasons for judgment were recently son had lived in the same premises for some years, even after the son released).

“Gas fireplaces, by law in Canada, are required to have a safety screen in front of the glass when it is over 172 degrees Fahrenheit,” said Craig McClean, president of the Fireplace Warehouse. These laws are to prevent people or pets from severely burning themselves by touching the glass, which reaches temperatures of up to 500 degrees.

“The problem with this is the fireplace can look dark with the safety screen, and many homeowners are looking for a clearer viewing option.”

To solve the problem of being too dark, a new type of fireplace with double glass is now trending in the market, McClean explained.

“This allows air to travel between the two panes of glass so the temperature of the outer glass stays cool enough to allow the screens to be removed,” he said.

However, a new problem arose with these products: the heat gets trapped inside the fireplace and fails to travel into the home, added McClean.

Other companies let the heat rise into the wall cavity and leave a gap, vents or louvers near the ceiling to let the heat out.

“This has multiple problems. When the heat is disposed from the top of the wall, it stays on the top as hot air rises, and fails to circulate in the room,” said McClean.

“Secondly, it requires heat-resilient material to build the wall to let heated air travel through. And it doesn’t look attractive to have a gap or louvers in the wall.”

He said some other companies use heat dumps to simply dump the heat into the attic or outside, but that “is a big waste of energy.”

The new Genesis line, using the Genesis Heat Shield with RTC technology, developed by Savannah Heating Products, applies the double-glass technology, but has found a way to circulate heat in the room more efficiently.

The fireplace is screen-free for optimum viewing pleasure. Plus, the new RTC technology — Radiant Thermal Convection Control —combines all three elements of heat transfer to produce heat and push it down into the room, creating maximum efficiency.

Homeowners can choose from 42 different levels of warmth from the fireplace, and the room will heat up very quickly.

“Because the heat does not rise through the wall, homeowners don’t need special wall materials or large expensive air flow systems, just basic framing and drywall, which makes it much easier to install,” said McClean.

“And you don’t need to have gaps in your wall; it makes your home look much nicer.”

Also, a suction tool is included to help purchasers remove and clean the glass.

“You don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars just to have someone else clean the glass for you,” said McClean.

There are now three of the bay front peninsula models on the market – the Galaxy 38, Galaxy 48 and Galaxy 58.

There are now two of the single sided linear models on the market – the Infinity 40 and Infinity 50. Plus a two-sided see-thru model is coming soon – the Orion.

These are a high end line of fireplaces, , according to McClean, and competitors models range from around $16,000 to more than $20,000. The Galaxy line is currently priced from $5995 to $9495, and the Infinity line is priced from $4995 to $6495.

The banners that will hang along the city’s streets in 2019 were revealed at Monday’s city council meeting.

Ten artists unveiled their depictions of Richmond life and culture that will fly in the streets of the city.

This year’s street banner contest had a record-breaking 424 submissions and the entries represented one of the contest’s 10 themes: Island City, transportation, active living, the arts, city centre, heritage, urban farming, waterfront, nature and culture.

A community judging panel reviewed the submissions and selected 20 designs as semi-finalists. The public was then invited to vote for their favourite designs on the City of Richmond’s Facebook page. The top 10 designs with the most “likes” were chosen as this year’s winners.

Nick Fruhling, a Richmond product designer who created the Steveston Tram banner, said he was inspired by romantic vintage travel posters but also the humble “workhorse” tram on display in his neighbourhood.

A public art piece called The Typhas will be installed on the stairs in front of the Oval, after two months of city council discussion about where it should be placed.

Council landed on the original recommendation that came from the parks and recreation committee in December.

“It’s such a classy piece of history that we don’t have any more,” he said, adding the tram helps him imagine what it must have been like travelling from Steveston to Vancouver by rail.

There was a brief moment Tuesday night when it looked like the McMath Wildcats might just do it again. Use another big third quarter to lead them to an electrifying victory in the pinnacle game of the 50th annual B.C. Junior Boys Invitational Basketball Championships.

Instead, it just brought out the best in the Burnaby South Rebels.

The province’s No. 1 ranked team capped an unbeaten season (34-0) with a huge 28-2 run en route to a 66-37 victory over the Wildcats — ending what had been thrilling four-day ride for the Richmond champions.

McMath’s road to the final at the Langley Events Centre included 57-56 win over defending champion St. George’s on opening day, then a 49-41 quarter-final triumph against No. 3 seed and Fraser Valley champion Yale. There were more thrills Monday when the tournament’s No. 6 seed pulled out a 69-67 overtime victory against No. 2 Vancouver College.

“When we brought it down to six, I thought we were going to win it. But that’s a very good team that matches up to our style and nothing fazes them, that’s incredible. They are very calm and that’s why they are No. 1, the champs,” said McMath’s Jon Acob — the dedicated veteran coach who was in his first provincial final after stops at several city schools over the years.

“We tried every single thing but we just didn’t have the firepower. I’m very proud of the way we played and came together as a team. The way they presented themselves. Just the grittiness and the heart. It was very good.”

The Rebels lit up the scoreboard from the perimeter — led by the 29-point performance from Jared Pineda to earn player-of-the-game and tournament MVP honours.

The two teams had met just 12 days earlier in the Vancouver and District final where the Rebels used another big run (21-2) in a 71-57 victory.

Abby Zawada certainly made an impression in her rookie season with the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball.

The McMath graduate and two-time Richmond Senior Girls League MVP showed why she was considered one of the top shooters in the province among the 2018 recruiting class. Zawada became the fifth highest scoring freshman in the history of the Cascades program thanks mainly to her success from 3-point range. She smashed the rookie record for 3-point attempts and shots made in a season. Her 31 percent success rate also ranks fourth all-time. Abby was named last week to the Canada West All-Rookie Team. His outstanding evening was completed when he passed out of a double team to find Kahn for the winning basket.

Hamberger finished with 21 points while Rio Hutchful added 18. Both were later named to the tournament first all-star team. Miguel Vargas earned second team honours.

The MacNeill Ravens closed out their fine season with a 66-55 loss to Terry Fox on Tuesday to place 16th. The Ravens were also named the tournament’s most sportsmanlike team.

Kennedy juggles two teams at provincials The rumours that Chris Kennedy brought a sleeping bag with him to the Langley Events Centre this week are not true. Although it would have come in handy.

Schools for West Vancouver — a position he has held for nearly a decade after starting off as a teacher at McRoberts Secondary back in the mid-1990s.

The super coach, who has devoted years of his life to developing basketball talent in his hometown, is going from one McMath Wildcats team to another at the LEC.

While the junior boys run to the provincial final included a couple of upset wins, the tournament’s sixth seed still had a decent shot of pulling off the feat. It’s a different outlook for his senior girls squad that is loaded with underage players.

Kennedy served as an assistant coach to Jon Acob for the upstart junior boys squad that lost in the provincial championship game on Tuesday night to Burnaby South. Hours later, he put on his head coach hat to guide the Wildcats senior girls team into its opening game 70-68 loss to the Brookswood Bobcats at the B.C. AAA Championships.

His schedule for Monday included a 5 pm practice in Richmond with the senior girls team before racing off to Langley for the 8 p.m. semi-final tilt that saw the Wildcats pull out a thrilling overtime win against Vancouver College. Oh yes, then there is his actual professional career as Superintendent of

George passed away suddenly at home in Norcross, Georgia. George was a compassionate man who loved God, family and friends. His main goal in life was to bring a smile to someone’s face daily.

George is survived by his wife Karen, daughters Kandace, Kristin, and stepdaughter Melody; sons Brandon, and stepson Trey. He is also survived by his mother Shirley (Spencer) DiPrimo (Bob) sisters Kathryn (Bill), Agnes (Don), Brothers; Rod, Mike (Doreen) and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
