When fed tragic or horrific news from around the world, I can often empathize, to a certain extent, and utter the requisite “oh, man” or a “that’s awful.”

But if I’m brutally honest, that’s often as far as it goes, before I, like many of us, get on with my busy day, as trivial and insignificant as it may be in the context of what I’d just heard, read or watched.

It’s not that I don’t care, and I don’t consider myself to be a particularly shallow or insincere person. It’s just that I can’t, thankfully, properly connect with, or relate to, the traumatic events being relayed to me via the media.

Without living it, or even witnessing it, I don’t believe we can truly appreciate the horror of what some of our own species experience in their daily lives.

So when Miftar Shala — a former refugee, whose family fled war-torn Kosovo in 1999 to start a new life in Richmond — contacted the Richmond News about the 20-year anniversary, I jumped on the story (published May 9).

You see, while still living in my native Scotland, I was lucky enough to be asked to fly to Kosovo (in the formerly warravaged Balkan region of south east Europe) to shadow and report on a small battalion of Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, a former cavalry (now tank) regiment, who were part of a NATO peacekeeping force.

It was the year 2000, a year after the Shala family’s village was burned to the ground by Serbian police, and many months since the Serbians had been pushed out of Kosovo and back over the border by NATO forces.

But the wounds of a bloody war were still relatively fresh and the scars were there for all to see.

Not least was the story I featured on two Serbian grannies, in their 90s, who had refused to move to Serbia from their native Kosovo when NATO swept in.

They needed a 24/7 soldiery guard, lest some revengeseeking locals walk in and, as I was told, slit their throats as they slept.

That particular feature was titled, “The Granny-sitters,” which, in retrospect, made a little light of the disturbing aftermath of a war in which thousands of Kosovans were killed or displaced.

Suffice to say, that entire week lives long in my memory, even though it was fairly early in my reporting career.

So when Miftar and his father Rame — who was badly beaten by rifle-wielding Serbian police scratched the surface of just a few of the horrors they experienced or witnessed, I could, in a small way, empathize and hung on their every word.

Having seen with my own eyes the aftermath of what the Shalas had endured played a massive role in me, 19 years later, being able to relate and connect.

Such a connection, I’d say, goes a long way to explaining why it often takes a tragic event, be it a life-altering injury or even death, before some people sit up and take notice.

If only we could see the world through each others’ eyes, we might live in a more empathetic place.

Council got it right Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond city council twiddles thumbs, while oceans rise,” Letters, May 11.

I was intrigued by the writer’s disdain for what she observed in the video replay of the April 23 city council meeting, so I watched it myself. I did not see a council twiddling thumbs, heads planted in the silty sand or demonstrating disdain, as Ms. Li suggests.

The delegation was for a non-agenda item, meaning they were kindly afforded valuable council time for an item not originally scheduled. This itself is a strong suggestion that the city sees the topic as important.

The delegation had five minutes to present, as is common practice, yet with three warnings they could not complete their statement in that time. They were shown courtesy and patience but could have better timed their statement and shown council the same courtesy.

There was much discussion of a highly technical legal nature that, I suspect, only the delegation lawyer and our mayor (also a lawyer) could digest. What was uncovered was that the legislative “tactic” is novel, untested and broad. This does not suggest to me that simply rubber stamping the letter provided by the delegation was a responsible action.

The mayor was looking for insight about the impacts of such a strategy to a city initiating

legal action. I suspect that means “what will it cost Richmond to take this approach?” The fact the delegation had not done such an analysis is worrisome, and council is prudent to have some sense of the investment that would be required to go down this road.

Coun. Alexa Loo suggested the delegation was acting as a lobby group, (they were lobbying Richmond council). She further noted that West Coast Environmental Law is funded, in part, by the Oak Foundation and Tides Foundation, groups that have opposed Canada’s oil sands. It doesn’t mean the delegates were bad people, but rather their suggestions and intentions need to be tested.

Lastly, I noted that the referral to staff was to analyze the potential use of this new tactic alongside other strategies. It was also amended to provide a short time frame for response, and deliverables in the form of a suggested letter to the provincial government and motion for the more appropriate and powerful forum of the Union of BC Municipalities.

Yes, doing nothing is not an option. Firing off letters without confirming the facts as they relate to our city is not wise. I applaud the majority of council that decided for a short pause to think before acting.

Not all seniors so ungrateful Dear Editor,

Re: “Reeling from tax deferment shock,” Letters, May 9.

As a “senior “ myself, I was embarrassed

by Mr. White’s letter of complaint to the editor. Not all of us old people think this way! Certainly, not I. He says “the government” will soon own a large chunk of his house because he will have to pay a measly 1.45 per cent interest (not compounded, by the way) on his deferred municipal taxes this year, which I reckon may amount to $5,000, at the most.

The tax he is now deferring is money that he either spends or, wisely, invests in a TFSA at perhaps five per cent interest.

Moreover, OAS is not clawed back by the extra income he earns from pocketing the municipal tax he will not pay.

Who benefits from this ludicrous tax deferment scheme — which starts at the

early age of 55 and is subsidized by all taxpayers? Not a single, young family struggling with a mortgage/rent and child care costs!

Mr. White’s house is probably assessed at $1.7 million. And he probably paid about $35,000 for this house 44 years ago. But, instead of feeling gratitude for his unearned windfall, he complains! He probably thinks he earned the increased value of his home when all he did was wait as it skyrocketed beyond control.

There is really no accounting for the ingratitude often expressed by the elderly.

They want subsidies when they don’t need them, complain about paying school taxes and want discounts on everything just for being old. They have no sympathy for the young...or the poor.

God forbid that I should join this band of ingrates!

What is Ramadan?

Dear Editor, Monday, May 6 marked the beginning of Ramadan, a month of sunrise-to-sunset fasting for nearly 1.6 billion Muslims across the world starting in 624 AD. But what exactly is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the holiest month of the year within Islam, and the month in which the Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad. In this month, the gates to heaven are believed to be open and the gates to hell closed.

For Muslims, Ramadan is a holy month dedicated to prayer, Quran recitation, introspection and fasting during the sunlight hours. But the Arabic word for fasting (sawm) doesn’t only refer to abstaining from food or drink.

It translates literally to “refrain,” and encompasses abstinence from food, drink, having sex, and all evil thoughts and deeds in the interest of self-purification. Meals are served in the early hours before dawn (called Suhoor) and break the daily fast with an evening meal called Iftar, often beginning with a few sips of water or something sweet, like some dates.

Ramadan is a joyous month of spiritual growth and late night family meals. It ends with a three-day festival called Eid ul-Fitr. The spiritual purpose of fasting is the surrender, the submission to a higher authority, which is the creator. It allows worshippers to con-

centrate their minds on devotion to their faith through prayers, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness and helping the needy.

People raise money and donate supplies to help others in need. And many fast to remind themselves about those in the world who don’t have enough to eat.

Fasting isn’t an absolute requirement for everyone. Children generally don’t participate until they hit puberty, and there are exemptions for people who are unable to fast due to illness, age or pregnancy.

Not eating is central because, as human beings, how many times do we aim our hands toward our mouth? Many. It’s the physical body we are feeding all day, but by abstaining from eating we are paying attention to the pains of hunger and thirst, and that makes you aware of those who don’t get to break their fast because they’re hungry all the time.

It makes us very grateful for what we do have.

How can non-Muslims be considerate of their Muslims friends and colleagues during the next four weeks? For the non-Muslim who is aware, it would be helpful not to put too much emphasis on the fact that the Muslim is fasting. If you know someone who is fasting, just be considerate. But the onus is on the believer.

Don’t just Dirty money recycle, damage done reuse Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, Re: “The Blob, not just cult fiction,” Voices, May 9.

I read with interest your editorial regarding your family commitment to recycling your bags and commend you for it. There is, however, more you and others could do.

I presume that when you shop, you pick up bags at the store, fill them with fruits and vegetables, empty them at home and then put the bags in your recycling box.

Instead of the recycling box, the bags can be put right back in your (reusable) shopping bag and used until they are too soiled or ripped to be reused. Then they can be recycled.

The savings are much greater than a one-time use.

So, the Ministry of Finance finally got around to conducting research that confirms what long-time homeowners and taxpayers in Richmond in particular have known for years: that money laundering by foreigners and the proceeds from organized crime have impacted the real estate market to the point that average Canadians can no longer afford to buy homes or find appropriately priced rental accommodations in the Lower Mainland. In the words of the report: “B.C. is an increasingly attractive place (for foreign criminals) to stash their money — without legal consequence — and that $5.3 billion has been laundered into an already skyrocketing real estate market that has driven home ownership out of most residents’ reach.”

Now, let’s guess how many of the dozens of unoccupied monster homes in your neighbourhood might qualify accordingly!

It makes one wonder whether it was ignorance that prevented our politicians from anticipating the need for appropriate measures to prevent such things from happening, or, if they have always been aware but were just too cowardly to do what was necessary.

In either case, by failing to do what they should have done, our politicians have played the part of enablers to criminality, and a report that comes far too late to have any real effect cannot camouflage this reality.

At least 80 people – 40 guests and 40 staff – were hit by the norovirus outbreak at an airport hotel in Richmond last weekend.

Both hotels, said the spokesperson, were deep-cleaning the food and beverage areas Monday, so those areas of the hotel are still closed.

VCH was sending health inspectors to both hotels this week to follow up on what has been done.

The Richmond News reported Monday how hundreds of Mother’s Day diners were left without brunch dates – after the outbreak closed restaurants in two neighbouring Richmond hotels, Harold’s Bistro in the Sheraton on Westminster Highway and Cavu Kitchen in the Hilton, around the corner on Minoru Boulevard.

If there are no new reports of people being sick, they will be permitted to resume food and beverage operations.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) confirmed the number to the News on Wednesday morning, but suggested it may rise as “not everyone reports their illness” straight away and, with it being a hotel, “people are travelling through.”

The News had reached out to the Sheraton for comment but didn’t receive a reply.

However, Sanjeet Sadana, general manager at the nearby Hilton, said there was “no reported guest sickness.”

“They closed down all food and beverage facilities in the hotel. A VCH environmental health officer inspected Saturday,” added the VCH spokesperson.

According to VCH, a number of the Sheraton’s food handling and cleaning staff, as well as hotel guests, did appear to be suffering on Saturday and Sunday from norovirus.

The Definition of “Spouse” deepens?

Reasons for judgment were released earlier this month by our Court of Appeal in a case called Robledano v. Queano. In the case, the deceased died in 2014 and her original Will could not be found.

It was held to have been revoked, leaving an intestate Estate. The Plaintiff argued she was a “spouse” of the deceased, so that she should inherit the Estate. A sister of the deceased opposed, saying the “spousal” relationship ended before the deceased died. The Plaintiff succeeded and the sister appealed.

The couple met in 1982 and lived together for about 17 years. They both sought other relationships in 2000 but still lived together, though in 2010 the Plaintiff left their home for two months. But the relationship resumed, they travelled in 2011 and the Plaintiff helped look after the deceased in late 2011 and after, as the deceased’s health deteriorated. The Court of Appeal dismissed the sister’s appeal, holding that despite the changes in various aspects of the relationship over the years, the couple remained “spouses”. The surviving spouse inherited the entire Estate of the deceased.

In my opinion, the definition of “spouse”, at least for Estate purpose, is wider than ever. Written agreements might be useful for any persons in relationships, even if they do not live together or think they are not spouses!

Call for crackdown on short-term rentals more than just investigate based on complaints.

Some Richmond city council members called for “assertive” enforcement to crack down on short-term rentals.

At a community safety meeting on Tuesday, the committee passed two motions.

The first, hire enough staff to investigate all short-term rentals. The second, be more assertive in enforcing rules.

Coun. Harold Steves noted that council passed a motion last year to add more bylaw officers; however, it was pointed out to him those were only temporary staff.

He replied that he felt there was a need for more permanent bylaw staff to work on short-term rentals, and that they should do

“I think we need to increase the staff to what we intended on a permanent basis,” Steves said, adding “the whole idea of this was to empty those houses so they went to people full-time for people to live in them.”

The Richmond News reported in April on Vancouver housing advocate and IT consultant Rohana Rezel who identified 974 units in Richmond listed on Airbnb, many run by the same operator.

Coun. Alexa Loo voted against both motions, pointing out staff is coming back soon to council with ideas around boarding and lodging regulations. She also said the bylaw department hasn’t indicated they need more staff members.

The motions will come back to a future council meeting.

Burglary suspect sought Richmond RCMP are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect believed to be involved in a condo complex burglary last summer.

The condo complex, on No. 2 Road near Williams Road, was subject to a break-in late July 2018. Police say “all investigational avenues have been exhausted” and are hoping the public can now help.

The suspect is described as an Asian male in his 20s with an athletic build. He was seen wearing a dark coloured T-shirt, baseball cap and a backpack.

Wood waste rarely reused The cost of demolition is on the rise; council urges more salvaging With rising energy costs, this option is increasingly attractive.

When a building is torn down, much of the wood waste gets burned as fuel or chipped as filler for the dump.

And, while at least 70 per cent of demolition waste — especially concrete and asphalt — is recycled in Richmond, how wood is handled could be improved, according to one councillor.

To encourage recycling and reuse of all demolition material, Richmond city council recently recommended increasing disposal fees but also allowing more time for construction companies to salvage useful material.

In discussing the proposed bylaw changes, Coun. Harold Steves said he was in favour of high disposal fees but that’s just a beginning.

“Burning it isn’t the worst thing, especially if it’s displacing an arguably dirtier fuel like coal, but it’s not the best thing,” Marr said.

“The best thing is if people can reuse the wood for its own purpose, whether it’s construction or a fixture.”

Some companies also chip wood, which then gets used as filler in landfills.

According to Metro Vancouver, the diversion rate for construction demolition material in the region was 77 per cent in 2017 with 1.27 million tonnes recycled out of a total of 1.6 million tonnes produced.

The best thing is if people can reuse the wood for its own purpose.

Concrete and asphalt were the largest components accounting for 71 per cent (900,000 tonnes) of recycled material. Both are fairly easy to break down and reuse in new construction.

Wood accounted for 241,000 tonnes of all construction demolition waste in 2017 and, while the “vast majority” is perfectly good, Marr said its reuse rate remains low.

His company salvaged large quantities of wood from a Richmond secondary school and the former Richmond Lordco. The wood was then reused for furniture, flooring and wallboards.

“Homes are not ideal because of the small volume and the cost to retrieve (the wood) is higher,” MacDonald said.

However, the quality of wood found in older homes is often better than what is sold today, explained Adam Corneil, owner of Unbuilders.

New wood sold at a lumber store is second or third growth spruce, compared to 500-1,000-year-old Douglas fir that was used in construction 100 years ago.

“Reclaimed wood is stronger, straighter and harder than the softwood that you buy off the shelves today,” he said.

Unbuilders’ mission is to make deconstruction a standard practise and “shift the mindset of builders and homeowners” to reclaiming wood for use in new homes, Corneil explained.

Anything from before the 1950s is worth reclaiming, including warehouses, barns and outbuildings, Corneil explained, and some material from the 1950s to the 1970s is also usable.

Corneil said “green demolition bylaws” that require high recycling rates – like Richmond’s 70 per cent – still allow for a lot of waste as much of the wood goes for fuel or landfill filler, Corneil explained.

“I suppose it’s a step forward (…) but not much of a step forward,” he said.

In Richmond, the diversion rate is about 75 per cent, explained city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

“The deposits that are required to obtain a demolition permit are quite hefty, usually running in the tens of thousands of dollars, so there’s a strong financial incentive for people to comply,” said Townsend in an email.

At its recent meeting, Richmond council passed the first reading to amend the Building Regulation Bylaw to extend the time for demolition permits to allow for more recycling and salvaging, and to consider salvaged material as recycled material. The vote was unanimous. However, Coun. Alexa Loo voted against the increase in disposal fees.

Richmond city council was considering more medical training for firefighters, but decided to wait for direction from the province.

Currently, BC Emergency Health Services has jurisdiction over ambulance services, but if they agree to it, firefighters who are trained as emergency medical responders could perform basic paramedic duties.

At Tuesday’s community safety meeting, Coun. Kelly Greene suggested, before moving ahead, they ask the province what will follow from recommendations made by the

auditor general in February about improving emergency health services.

One suggestion was to make agreements with local firefighters on the level of care they could provide.

“I think it would be very frustrating for someone who has the training to help but isn’t allowed,” Greene said.

To become an emergency medical responder, the training would cost $850 per firefighter, to a total of $170,000 in tuition and $426,000 in staff time.

According to statistics from Richmond Fire & Rescue, firefighters responded to 398 medical calls and 78 motor vehicle incidents in the month of March.

A former Steveston church built by volunteers in 1894 will get a new foundation, thanks in part to a $150,000 city grant earmarked to preserve heritage buildings in the historic fishing village.

The owner of the building, Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary, is replacing the foundation as part of a long-term plan to restore the building. Future plans include restoring the exterior, currently stucco, with siding.

The Steveston Village Heritage Conservation Grant program comes from charges levied on developments in exchange for more density.

The money is earmarked for heritage preservation in Steveston. The funds have been collected since 2009 and the city currently has more than $1 million in the kitty, but this is the first time the fund is being tapped.

A low estimate of the cost of the foundation is $343,000 – the grant cannot exceed more than 50 per cent of the cost.

Before it was a thrift store for the hospital auxiliary, the building housed Steveston Bicycle Shop.

It is one of the oldest churches in Richmond, and the oldest to be on its original site. At different times, it was the Steveston Methodist Church, the Methodist Indian Mission and the Steveston United Church. As the United Church, it amalgamated the Caucasian and Japanese congregations after the Second World War.

Michael Bomfield imagines men in bowler hats coming on the train from Vancouver in the early 20th century with their rifles to shoot a few rounds on the Garden City Lands, which was once a popular shooting practise site.

It might have been the thousands of bullets, or maybe other activities, that caused contamination of the soil on the Garden City Lands, of which 20 acres has been turned into a demonstration and teaching farm by Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Needless to say, when the soil’s lead, selenium, chromium, molybdenum, arsenic, copper, nickel and antimony content were found to be above allowable thresholds for farming, a solution was needed.

To cover up the contaminated soil, 21,000 cubic metres of soil was brought from the airport to the farm, topping it up by 70 centimetres. The soil brought from the airport was largely mineral soil with very little living matter, in fact, less than one per cent. Compost and manure were also added.

“Clearly the reason we put the mineral soil down is because of the concern about contamination above agricultural thresholds, but I see it as a real potential to try, I think, a unique tactic to both protect peat and to still allow farming,” he said, adding it might take a few years to test whether this works.

While the main concern was to cover the contaminated soil so the land could be farmed, the end result was a “cutting-edge” solution for the peat base and the carbon trapped in it, explained Bomford, a faculty member at KPU’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems.

This is the second year Kwantlen Sustainable Agriculture program students are farming the Garden City Lands, located right in the heart of Richmond. They are producing food for their weekly farmers markets and learning how to run a farm.

Garden City Lands is a remnant of the Greater Lulu Island Bog. Peat is waterlogged, partly decomposed vegetation and farming it would have released a lot of carbon-emitting gases into the air, Bomford explained.

“This whole notion of layering mineral soil over peatlands, in order to avoid de-

He calculated that, if they had farmed in the peat, they would have released 35,000 kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent per

hectare per year, adding to the already large amounts of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere.

However, with 70 centimetres of topsoil, the KPU farm is going in the opposite direction, pulling in 5,795 kilograms of carbon per hectare per year, according to Bomford’s calculations.

Students are involved in farm planning, management and sales throughout the year, and, in summer, there are three full-time students working at the farm under the supervision of the farm manager.

Last year, there were two market garden beds, and, this year, one will be left with a cover crop to im-

prove its quality, but they have added four more beds to grow vegetables for their Tuesday markets outside the Richmond Cultural Centre.

Seedlings, or transplants, are currently growing in the geodesic dome, a naturally heating greenhouse, which KPU had built in October.

They have also built a high tunnel greenhouse on rails, which will be moved from year to year — eventually, there will be three of them.

A big focus at the farm is to improve the soil quality.

As a winter cover crop, they planted rye and crimson clover, which is currently being mowed down to mulch and will be worked into the soil adding organic molecules — carbon chains captured through photosynthesis — pulling carbon “out of thin air,” Bomford explained.

“Our farming will be continuously about improving the soil — that will go on forever,” he said.

Desperate times called for desperate measures and, with their new Richmond hockey store struggling, the Jung brothers took matters into their own hands.

Outside of Minoru Arena at 4 a.m., the siblings moved up and down the line of parents waiting to sign up their kids for Richmond Minor Hockey, handing out free coffee and donuts, along with a flyer for their new store, Ice Level Sports, on No. 3 Road, close to Alderbridge Way. Their plan worked.

“Even though we were wellknown, people weren’t coming to us right away,” said Russ Jung, 59, of the shrewd business move 28 years ago by himself and younger brothers Chris and Steve.

“Myself and Chris were working 10-hour shifts to sell one item. There was lots of competition at the time. But we picked up a year or two into it and we moved to a bigger store next door.”

Another younger brother,

Mike, and their sister, Cathy, the eldest of the Jung “kids” joined the firm a couple of years in, with Ice Level remaining at No. 3 Road for eight years, until 1999.

Its third and final location, at Ironwood on Steveston Highway, is where the doors will close Saturday, May 25.

“It’s come down to the fact that costs are killing us,” said Russ.

“Not being able to get workers is killing us…one kid called in sick one day because he was getting a tattoo...

“You just burn yourself out and keep banging your head against the wall…for no reward, other than working for

“The lease went up 20 per cent this year alone, that’s why we’re shutting it down.”

Pak seeks federal seat

Ivan Pak will run in Richmond Centre under the People’s Party of Canada banner in the fall federal election. The former school trustee candidate, who ran on an anti-SOGI platform in the recent municipal election, was chosen as the PPC candidate this week.

The PPC was formed last year by Maxime Bernier after he lost the leadership race for the Conservative Party.

Pak has taken a strong stance against identity politics. In a tweet announcing his candidacy, Pak said “diversity isn’t our strength, unity is.”

New schools deputy named The Richmond School District will have a new deputy superintendent as of July 1. Rick Ryan, a former BC Lions football player and long-time administrator with the Surrey School District, has been appointed to the position left vacant after Scott Robinson moved into the superintendent’s role.

TransLink is encouraging riders to explore restaurants along SkyTrain lines.

If you’ve ever found yourself hankering for dim sum while on the Canada Line, a new TransLink initiative just might help you curb that craving next time.

In partnership with the online food guide WestCoastFood, TransLink has created a series of restaurant and brewery tours in neighbourhoods along its SkyTrain systems.

The campaign, Dine the Line, provides maps and videos aimed to encourage tourists to take transit while exploring Metro Vancouver.

Life’s journey doesn’t come with a pause button or convenient access to a time machine.

But Trinity Western University (TWU) has the next best thing thanks to its Adult Degree Completion Program, which is offered at the Richmond campus or online.

“The issue is a lot of adults get busy lives, have full-time work and family commitments,” said Mark Halvorson, Associate Dean of the Bachelor of Arts Leadership program at TWU. “While they may have had some post-secondary education over time, which helped them get started in their careers, they can feel stuck if they didn’t finish their degrees. And they can’t simply hit pause in their lives or go back to university and finish their degree.”

That can leave you feeling frustrated because you are competent and have developed a level of success in your field. “But at the same time, they see their peers advancing around them,” Halvorson added.

“So, what we did was create a format for finishing a degree that allows you to finish the schoolwork one night a week and also do the courses in an accelerated format. So, in as little as 18 months, depending on how much university transfer credit they have, a student can finish their degree.” All the

while that allows the student ample time to keep up with all of their other commitments.

As for who is enrolling, it covers a large demographic.

“We see a wide range of people from younger people who are already established in the workplace to those who are now retired,” Halvorson said.

“They may have collected a certificate here, or a few courses there, but they fall short of a full degree.”

“From what they have, we can create customized learning plans and make those links between the programs and schools they’ve attended to finish the course work we offer to provide a degree.”

To gain access to the program, students must be 23 or older and have some work and life experience.

The degree they work towards is a Bachelor of Arts in Leadership, a discipline that is geared towards succeeding in the workplace.

“With a focus on the workplace, it will give them skills they can use in everyday situations to maximize their contributions,” Halvorson said.

Lawyer plans Richmond distillery City centre location near hotels could be rejuvenated with tasting room Saskatchewan, also upheld a tradition of making vodka.

Paul Doroshenko was 13 the first time he helped distill a batch of vodka.

“I was fascinated with it in school, just the whole idea that you could ferment something and it would turn into alcohol,” he told the Richmond News.

Distilling is a family trade for Doroshenko, who is now a defence lawyer with offices in Richmond specializing in (ironically) drunk driving laws.

“There’s a long history of (distilling) in my family,” he said. “My great-grandfather’s gravestone…is a piece of copper pipe that was left over from still manufacturing that my grandfather had engraved with his name.”

Many generations ago, prohibition chased Doroshenko’s mother’s family out of the United States, taking their knowledge of alcohol production with them to Canada. His father’s side of the family, who were Ukrainian farmers living in

That opportunity came when a unit opened up in the same building as his firm’s, Acumen Law Corporation’s, Richmond offices at Elmbridge and Cedarbridge ways.

After renting the unit, he tossed around multiple ideas of what to do with the space but now has an application before council to open his dream distillery.

“I thought…I’m going to follow through on my dream. I’m going to build a distillery,” he said.

“It’s a good location…the building is far enough away from any other residential building that it’s not a concern, but we also have, like, five hotels within a fiveminute walk, and I see tourists wandering around and there’s nothing to do… it’s actually a little bit desolate there.”

Doroshenko hopes his distillery, with a small tasting room for visitors, will offer a little more spirit to the otherwise quiet

area.

“There’s nothing cooler than visiting a distillery,” he said. “If (tourists) can come and visit a distillery and have a taste of a gin and a vodka that’s made in a craft distillery, I think it’s a wonderful opportunity.”

While Doroshenko’s passion is vodka, he said his business partner is a big fan of gin.

“We bought the most beautiful gin still you could possibly imagine. It is a handhammered copper still…from 19 western Spain,” he said.

Doroshenko added that some distilleries choose to make gin – which is a neutral-alcohol infused with juniper berries and other botanicals – in their vodka still.

However, as more of a vodka purist, he feels this can affect the flavours of the vodka down the line.

“I’ve travelled around to all these craft distilleries and anybody that uses a gin basket (for infusing), I try their vodka and I can always taste the juniper,” he said.

To keep these flavours separate in his distillery, Doroshenko said he and his partner have also purchased a top-of-the-line vodka still.

“We went ahead and bought the most advanced vodka still system you could possibly find,” he said.

“It recycles the water that it uses for cooling for all the washing, it is super high-efficiency and it is all manufactured in H u n g a r y. . . the one sample of vodka I’ve had from it is the most impressive vodka I’ve ever had.”

“They were legal actually, it was just illegal to take it across the border.”

“So we’re going to have this distillery back, I find that rather interesting. And, on a small scale, it’s not a bad idea.”

As for what the distillery will be called, Doroshenko said he’s got one name in mind: Deep Blue Distilleries.

“I was flying on the float plane from Victoria to Richmond…and I was looking at the waters of the Georgia Strait mixing with the emerald waters of the Fraser,” he said.

“I feel this long life con-

nection to the Fraser River, and I looked at the mix of the emerald Fraser with the gorgeous blue water and I just thought ‘deep blue, look at that deep blue,’ so we called it Deep Blue.”

Doroshenko doesn’t have a timeline for when the dis-

tillery will open, but his application will be considered again at a public hearing next month.

A Sidaway Road farm is providing a life-changing experience for the Medeiros family.

Tony Medeiros has just watched his eldest daughter conclude her wrestling career with a national title at the U17/U19 Canadian Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Two more daughters — ages eight and 10 — are potentially travelling the same path and it’s all thanks to the Bhullars.

The family-run club is now making a significant impact on the country’s largest stage, winning four medals, including two gold, at the this year’s championships.

Run by volunteer coaches — headed by former national champion Jag Bhullar — the club only charges insurance fees and runs the training sessions out of a small gym on the family property. It’s the same building where Jag and his cousin Arjan — now a UFC fighter — learned their trade. Now it’s bursting at the seams with inspiring young wrestlers.

“We have told Jag probably a 1,000 times it shouldn’t be this way.

They are giving us club t-shirts that we aren’t even paying for. This family is incredible,” marvelled Tony.

“Jag has passion for this and so does his wife. Even Arjan finds the time with his training schedule.

These guys are an entirely different level when it comes to giving back.”

For some time the Bhullars have been in communication with the city to find a bigger venue for training.

The tricky part is the family wants to keep the sport extremely affordable.

“The foundation is in place and we need more space for the kids we have. That is the whole goal.

We have gone from sending one kid to nationals to six this year and two of them returning home national champions,” said Jag. “It’s huge

The Grade 12 Notre Dame student also won the B.C. High School Championship back in February.

She still plans on helping out at Bhullar Wrestling as an instructor.

“It is so gratifying the way she has grown,” said Jag. “Not only through this year but years in the past too. It’s been amazing to see.

I’m excited for her future behind wrestling.”

Marques Calapiz stepped up in weight class this season and battled his way back from an opening round loss to win bronze at high school provincials. His progress in the last couple months resulted in gold at nationals. His commitment and determination makes him the unofficial “captain” of his club.

“We are here training be better people and wrestlers. Just having people who support you through the whole journey, it definitely is why we came back with medals,” said Calapiz. “This is more than club. It’a s family.”

Tyler Leung returned from Fredericton with a bronze medal, highlighted by a one point win over the B.C. champion he had previously lost three times to.

“These last couple of months I have grown a lot,” smiled Leung. “I worked hard every practice and we did everything we could to become better.”

The club’s final medal was another bronze won by Jaren Bhullar — nephew of Jag and Arjan. He has made impressive progress while dealing with the family’s tremendous legacy in the sport.

“He is his hardest critic because he holds himself to a higher standard by comparing himself to myself and Arjan,” said Jag. “He is fulfilling the role and becoming his own man. He is not our nephew anymore.”

The queens of penalty kicks have done it again, this time capturing B.C. Soccer’s Coastal Cup on home turf.

The Richmond Strikers earned the U15A title at the Minoru Oval with a 2-1 win over the Fraser Valley Selects. The result also sends the rep girls team to the Provincial “A” Cup Championships, set for early July at the South Surrey Athletic Park.

The Strikers and Selects were scoreless through 80 minutes of regulation time. Teagan Ng gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the opening overtime half and the Selects answered in the late going of the additional 10-minute frame. That sent the Strikers to their comfort zone — better known as penalty kicks.

The Selects’ first shot went over the crossbar while the Strikers calmly converted all four of their attempts on perfectly-placed shots.

When the Selects’ fourth shot also sailed high, a 4-2 outcome clinched the cup.
