I could have easily filled this paper with letters of outrage over city council’s decision to approve $5.3 million to rebuild a clubhouse for a lawn bowling club with 280 members.

Readers are mad. (See pages 4 and 6) At least 20 letters to the editor came in about the story, and I can’t even count the number of Facebook comments. I did see one post that basically said, “quit whining, it’s great that seniors are active” — but only one.

It probably didn’t help that we ran the lawn bowling story in the same paper as a story about how a number of Richmond’s not-for-profits are desperate for housing. In particular, we profiled the Richmond Addictions Services which has provincial funding to establish a one-stop centre (the Foundry) for youth struggling with addiction and other issues. But they can’t open because they have no ‘clubhouse’ to operate out of.

(While it may have looked like a conspiracy on our part, I promise you it wasn’t. We’re not that organized.)

Complaints about the $5.3 million expenditure varied.

Some agreed with the councillors who argued that, if the facility was going to be rebuilt, it should be turned into a two storey building to create space for other groups — such as the Foundry. However, most readers just couldn’t believe that that much money was being spent on a facility that serviced so few folks while other organizations, such as Richmond’s 2,000 member-strong soccer club, is stuck with a port-a-potty.

And don’t even get them started on the animal shelter.

It might seem hard to understand how city council got here, but like most things, it’s been a process. Looking back at some old news stories, I see Coun. Bill McNulty campaigned on creating a lawn bowling clubhouse back in the 2005 municipal election. In 2009/10 the city and federal government spent $350,000 and $260,000 respectively to replace two artificial turfs for the club; by 2016, the clubhouse was among the city’s top five priority civic facilities to be built or updated; in 2017 council approved $4 million to rebuild the clubhouse; in 2018 council voted to keep the greens where they were; in 2019 council approved the 4,900 square foot facility plans and topped up the budget with an addtional $1.21 million.

In other words, the ball has been rolling on this one for some time. It would be tough to change direction at this point.

And regarding the proposal to make it two storeys to accommodate other groups, there is the issue of green space.

Minoru Park will have even less green space than planned because of council’s recent decision not to demolish the old Minoru pools and turn them into lawn. I realize the proposal for the clubhouse is to increase its height, not its footprint.

However, this area is supposed to be a park, a taller building could be imposing and compromise that park ‘feel.’

In other words, there is a certain logic to how we got here. I respect that. But, also with respect, I have to side with our letter writers. Even if council had opted to restore the clubhouse, I might have more sympathy. This is a beautiful little heritage building with a hardwood ceiling and wood accents throughout. To demolish it for a single-use club needs a re-think.

Despite the process, times change, councils change, priorities change — and so should this decision.

Farming is a culture, not a high-profit venture Dear Editor, Re: “Matchmaking supports farmers,” Community, May 23, 2019 We’re happy that Sweet Digz Farm was profiled as a successful smallscale farm that leases land and sells organic vegetables in Richmond.

However, we’d like to make a critical clarification about measuring a farm’s success using “gross-incomeper-acre.”

Agriculture has become the target of confusing debate about competing land-use pressures which lead to harmful community conflict.

One of us recently experienced verbal assault by an irate Richmond resident who overheard we were farmers, assumed we were “rich farmers” and unleashed anger about land use and how easy farmers have it. For us, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

What is true is that gross-incomeper-acre says very little about the farm’s “net income,” financial success or value to local food supply. A farm’s gross income varies

greatly, depending on countless factors including business model, crops grown, customer base, farming methods, farm size, number of employees, owning land or leasing, and having a long-term lease or annual renewal with little security to invest in infrastructure or the business.

Gross income doesn’t reflect “cost of production,” whether a farm sells locally or elsewhere for a higher price, and whether they grow only a few highly profitable crops or a variety to fulfill as much local demand as possible.

At Sweet Digz Farm, we grow 45 crops so customers can get all their veggies locally during the season.

We want people to know their food is grown using ecologically friendly methods healthy for the soil, wildlife and their families.

Small-scale farming fills a niche and is a viable and empowering business model.

It’s incredulous as to how the City of Richmond is so disproportionately appropriating funds for its citizens.

Focusing on gross income is like asking someone’s weight but not their height.

Five million dollars for a building that caters to less than 300 of its citizens.

We need a more holistic view of how we value farms, farm businesses, and in fact, all businesses.

The $100,000 gross-income-peracre target advocated by well-meaning supporters of small-scale agriculture is disorienting and even harmful for farmers, and can lead customers to misunderstand the costs and risks involved in agriculture.

Very few mixed-vegetable farms operate this way. It’s great to tell new farmers to reach for an ambitious target, but it needs context.

In contrast, Richmond FC, one of several organizations that heavily utilizes turf fields across the city, doesn’t have a proper clubhouse with washrooms that have running water at their main field at Hugh Boyd.

RFC, an organization that has over 1,800 members and participants, cannot even obtain basic facilities that would be less than five per cent of the new lawn bowling building!

Our neighbours in Surrey have decided that, to grow participation in sports, it will put $5 million towards a new building that could benefit thousands of players year round.

We set prices that we hope are affordable to as many as possible, even though our profit margins are small.

For us, farming is more than a business, it’s a relationship with the land — an agricultural way of life.

I really don’t understand how a budget of this magnitude is approved and the fact that the folks it’s granted to can’t even decide what to do with the extra space doesn’t seem logical and is quite infuriating.

I want $5M horsehoe clubhouse Dear Editor, Re: “New clubhouse slated for Richmond lawnbowlers,” News, Thursday, May 30.

We should be thankful that the people who govern our city have educated us as to what facilities and services really deserve the highest levels of support.

I had no idea that 250 peo-

ple, who spend parts of their week rolling plastic balls back and forth across manicured lawns, were in such desperate need of money to fund their exclusive passtime. Apparently things like weed control and ball maintenance are very very costly.

The four pillars drug strategy — harm reduction, prevention, treatment and enforcement — was adopted by Vancouver city council in 2001.

For many years, harm reduction, including implementation of injection sites, has been the main focus of this drug strategy — prevention and treatment woefully lacking.

At this point in time, an addictions treatment opportunity for Richmond (largely funded by the province) should be welcome, considering the increasing number of drug addicts and the epidemic of drug deaths.

Richmond city council should take every opportunity to facilitate and support non-profit initiatives, addiction treatment services being one example.

So how predictable, that at the recent council meeting, a majority of councillors voted for a single purpose facility on city land — a new clubhouse for lawn bowling — rather than something larger to accommodate other uses such as office space to support some of these non-profits with less than market lease rates.

Come to think of it, Mayor Brodie, perhaps the 22,000 sq. ft. house that was allowed to be built on ALR land, and at the time “opposed” by some councillors as you so aptly pointed out (“New clubhouse slated for Minoru Park,” News, May 30) may be just the ticket for the urgently needed addiction facility.

Sarcasm aside, council needs to take a more “out of the box” approach to the non-profits’ dire situation.

While seniors at the Minoru Centre for Active Living are enjoying their brandnew centre, the Richmond News has filed a freedom-of-information request asking about delays in the construction of the centre — half of which still remains closed to the public.

The city now has until July 4 to provide the Richmond News with the documents.

The physical investigation of the pool base failure has now been completed by the construction manager and the insurer, and analysis work is scheduled to be done in June, according to city spokesperson Ted Townsend.

The facility in Minoru Park, which includes the seniors centre, a fitness centre and an aquatic centre, was originally supposed to open in spring 2017, but with the city citing bad weather and labour shortages, the opening date was moved ahead.

After that, a reconstruction plan and schedule will be developed, and then a timeline for public access can be provided.

In the summer of 2018, the city was hiring people to work at the facility in anticipation of opening later that year, but, again, there was a delay.

Finally, in late January, the city said the facility would open on March 11 just in time for March break.

But in a press release on Feb. 20, they announced that the opening of the aquatic centre would be postponed since it was discovered the concrete base of one of the six pools had shifted.

Broadmoor Neighbourhood Association (BNA) is a non-profit organization founded in April 2017 by a group of active Broadmoor residents. It was started as a Block Watch group to improve the security of the community and has now grown into a family support system with more than 80 volunteers serving around 1,500 people.

• Crime prevention & public security Strong communities play a major role in crime prevention. Richmond RCMP has recognized the association for successfully mobilizing the community to be a Block Watch neighbourhood. Thanks to the volunteer patrol team who watched out for neighbours and reported suspicious activities, the number of break-ins in the area has dropped.

• Neighbourhood assistance “Our theme is love your neighbour as yourself,” said David Zhao, founder of BNA. As the association evolves, its mission has expanded beyond crime prevention to include a telephone hotline for residents to help each other - from caring for the elderly to picking up neighbours’ kids from school.

As the saying goes, better a neighbour nearby than a brother far away.

• Community engagement Richmond is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Canada with immigrants of different backgrounds.

As more and more people joined the association, it has become a gathering place for families from different cultures to engage with each other.

Broadmoor Neighbourhood Association is a model for all communities in Richmond. We can all work together to prevent crime and create a better community for each other.

Teacher rep ‘optimistic’ that each school district has weighted classroom composition language for special-needs students whereby a special-needs student is equivalent to, for example, 2.5 or 3.5 students.

As the teachers’ union and their employers bargain a new contract, the Richmond Teachers’ Association president is warning proposals on the table could result in a “significant loss” for local teachers.

Chell said formulas are restrictive and, if weighting for special-needs students were applied across the province, it would add $1 billion in costs. He added that BCPSEA has been given a mandate and they have to stay within that dollar amount.

The current contract expires on June 30, and the two parties, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, have been in discussions about the new contract since February.

Despite proposals they don’t like, RTA president Liz Baverstock said she remains “optimistic:” both parties are still at the table and talking, and she believes a deal is possible.

However, she is not impressed by what’s on the table.

“It would be a significant loss for Richmond what’s being proposed by BCPSEA,” Baverstock said.

According to Alan Chell, chair of BCPSEA and a trustee from Revelstoke, the union and BCPSEA seem to agree on issues such as class size,

A series on global and local “food footprints” has earned the Richmond News first place in the category of Best Environmental Writing for the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.

Written by reporters Graeme Wood and Alyse Kotyk, the series covered the international conference at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, “Place Based Food Systems” held last summer.

The conference brought together academic and community leaders to encourage cities to transition from thinking to living sustainably.

The News’ series addressed critical issues regarding global climate change while also zeroing in on local city-led initiatives such as community gardens.

The owner of a golf course in the agricultural land reserve, who was fined $70,000 for bringing in too much fill, said he didn’t see documents limiting the amount allowed.

Savage Creek Golf Course was fined for bringing in triple the amount of fill permitted, and while the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) didn’t specify how many cubic metres it could bring in, elevations and areas where fill could be placed were specified, according ALC documents.

The previous owner was given permission in 1997 to bring in fill to create a ninehole golf course. The property was bought by Harry Hogler in 2005 at which time he wrote to the ALC saying he wanted to build an 18-hole golf course.

The ALC responded to Hogler saying he could proceed with an 18-hole golf course, but it had to be consistent with “approvals granted under application 28157.” Hogler claims he understood application 28157 to be his, but in fact it was the application from the previous owner. Also, that application included a plan that specified how much the land would be elevated. Hogler said he never

saw that plan.

As such, Hogler thought he had the green light to bring in fill and was unaware of any limit as to how much or the fact there were restrictions on elevation.

Hogler said he assumed the ALC was referring to his 2005 application, not to the one made by the previous owners.

The original plan included average fill elevations of about two metres over 23 hectares of land, with 4.77 metres in a small area of the property, according to ALC documents. This amount was equal to 460,000 cubic metres, although the plan didn’t define the volume of fill. 11

The union’s opening proposal for wages has been for a one-time four-per-cent labour market adjustment as well as a salary grid restructuring which would result in a seven-per-cent increase in wages.

He said he understands that this is just an opening proposal, but it doesn’t fit within the amount of money

they have to bargain with.

Baverstock pointed out B.C. teachers, however, are at the lower end of the pay scale across the country, according to the BCTF’s calculations, the second lowest in Canada.

“We have to start closing that gap,” she said.

But, those children can seek a variation of such a Will under our legislation (the Wills Estates and Succession Act). While there is no guarantee that a disinherited child will always successfully get a Will varied in Court, they have the right to try and, in many cases, that is important.

The CEO of the ALC, Kim Grout, wrote in her decision imposing the penalty, that she doesn’t have any basis “to conclude that the Owner was deliberately contravening the original Commission’s decision.”

He continued to bring in a little bit more until 2017 when the ALC started to question what he was doing on his property.

But, she adds, that it’s the owner’s responsibility to make sure it’s “compliant with the Commission’s decision,” and that it’s her view that the owner “failed to act with due diligence.”

He said he then stopped immediately.

Hogler said the property is very visible and there were thousands of people coming in and going out as the driving range was open the whole time, adding he wasn’t trying to hide anything.

Hogler said his intention was to do some good and build something for people to use, bringing in the best soils possible.

“No one had a problem with (the property) until 2017,” Hogler said.

“Basically, what I’ve done is build a park that will be there for 200 years,” Hogler said.

During the Saturday, May 18 event, which coincided with National Impaired Driving Awareness Day, police pulled over hundreds of drivers.

The majority of them partly filled the artificial turf at Field 3, with a morning prayer kicking off the festivities, which continued afterwards behind Minoru Oval.

“This is the third year in a row we have been able to hold it outside,” said Abdullah Nasib Ali, general secretary of the BC Muslim Association (BCMA), whose Richmond branch organized the event.

They were stationed on Inglis Drive (YVR south terminal), Gordon Way and Graybar Road (east end of Richmond) and at Cambie Road and St. Edwards Drive (Bridgeport area).

Around 350 vehicle checks were conducted over the course of the operation, typically early evening until the morning.

According to the police, officers dealt with eight alcoholrelated incidents, resulting in immediate driving prohibitions.

One driver was caught driving while prohibited and officers located open liquor in one of the vehicles.

Of those 350 vehicle checks, police also issued violation tickets for failing to have valid insurance, a child not fastened in appropriate restraint in a vehicle and vehicle equipment related defects. There was no drug-related impaired driving.

“We follow the lunar calendar and the date obviously shifts, so we have been blessed with good enough weather to do this.

“Throughout the summer, police officers from Richmond RCMP’s Frontline and Road Safety Unit will continue to target impaired drivers and those whose driving places others at risk,” said Sgt. Nigel Pronger, of the RCMP’s Operational Teams.

“We start with the prayer and then it is the day-long celebration. But the celebrations will go on for the rest of the week with people going house to house and some hosting events at community halls.”

The City of Richmond could be edging towards a ban on decorative glitter, primarily used in children’s arts and crafts.

Effective June 24, all glitter supplies (including loose glitter and glitter glue) are to be removed from studios at the Richmond Arts Centre, with supply, storage and purchasing of glitter to be stopped moving forward.

The move comes after it was brought to the city’s attention by a member of the Richmond Artists Guild that the tiny plastic glitter pieces are in the process of being banned in the UK, due to their toxic nature and harm to the environment.

The city told the Richmond News that staff already had concerns about glitter, as it is also very challenging to clean up, and it’s now looking for an alternative before considering a city-wide ban.

Lorraine Wellman, Richmond Artist Guild vice-president, alerted the city to bans in

the UK and thought that “it was something that was easily eliminated.”

“We don’t necessarily even think about it as both a polluter, (but) it gets into the drains and then into the ocean because it is really tiny bits of plastic,” said Wellman.

Wellman then got the attention of one of the city’s children’s art instructors who, in turn, informed the city.

City spokesperson Ted Townsend said the policy is just in effect at the arts centre, for now.

“The intent is that this is a temporary measure until we have researched and found a non-toxic alternative that is also affordable for city programs. Our staff is currently working on this,” he added.

“The Arts Centre is always looking for ways to ensure the activities there are healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable.

“Glitter has been found to be toxic and can release chemicals that disrupt hormones in humans and is linked to onset of various diseases, in addition to its harmful impact on the environment.”

What’s being touted as the “world’s fastest megacar” made its Canadian debut in Richmond last week.

The Koenigsegg Jesko was unveiled at a glitzy event hosted in a hangar in YVR’s south terminal on Friday evening.

It had previously been revealed to the public for the first time at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in March.

The Jesko is the successor to the Agera RS that broke the production car world speed record in November 2017.

The car has a starting price tag of around US$2.8 million and is thought to be capable of speeds up to 300 mph.

“Last night saw around 100 supercar enthusiasts gather to welcome the Koenigsegg Jesko to Vancouver (Richmond) as part of its World Tour,” said Asgar Virji, president of Weissach Vancouver, Canada’s authorized Koenigsegg dealer.

“Koenigsegg’s simulations say that the Jesko should be the world’s first 300mph car. It truly is a technological marvel.”

At its heart, the manufacturer says the Jesko features one of the most powerful production internal combustion engines on the planet.

However, according to Johal, it seems that the project is back to “square one” after the cancellation of the previous government’s 10-lane bridge project, which included five years of consultation, preparation work that cost between $80 and $100 million and an estimated price tag of $3.5 billion. Not only did the plan include capacity for rapid transit, it also included $500 million in transit improvements, Johal added.

13-year-old Richmond student has started his dream of becoming a Hollywood director, by winning his category at the BC Student Film Festival.

Grade 7 Tomekichi Homma student Justin Blais won the Best Elementary School Film section at the festival, hosted last Saturday at the VanCity Theatre in Vancouver.

His 10-minute short film, Detective George, follows the adventures of a young boy who overcomes self-doubts and the doubts of others to become a crime detective, solving a strange string of house robberies in his neighbourhood.

“I wanted to make the best film an elementary school student has ever submitted to the festival,” said Justin, adding that he couldn’t have made the film without the help of his friends, who played key characters in the film.

“The acting of my friends kept getting better the more we kept filming,” said Justin, who plays the character Benny and who doubts George’s ability to solve crimes.

The support he received from his neighbours and the community was incredible, said Justin, who writes scripts and makes films in his spare time, and saves the money he makes from dog-walking and chores to buy filming supplies and gear.

“Everyone agreed to help make the film, no questions asked,” he said.

For a key scene where the movie ends, Justin wanted to film in a toy store, so he crossed his fingers and approached Splash Toy Store on Moncton Street to see if he could film there.

“The people at Splash were amazing,” added Justin. “Not only did the owner, Beth, let me film in the store, she arranged for a staff person to play the role of the store clerk.”

The McMath secondary Interact Club had a very special cause in mind when it started baking banana bread late last year.

As part of their remit to inspire leadership and raise funds for local and international causes, the club decided to help the “Home of Angels” project, which focuses on an orphanage in Uganda.

Club members met with the project’s Barbara Giraud, of Abbotsford, who had many years ago visited the orphans, who had no education or reliable sources of sustenance.

Soon after returning to home to B.C., Gi-

raud baked and sold 12,000 loaves of banana bread, funds from which kicked off the construction of an orphanage for the children, which is now in its 10th year.

Connect Hearing, in conjunction with Professor Mark Fenske at the University of Guelph, are seeking participants who are over 50 years of age, have never worn hearing aids and have not had a hearing test in the last 24 months, for a hearing study that investigates factors that can influence better hearing.

Study Parameters Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. Of particular interest to the researchers is identifying how we listen. There is a current theory that divides people into two “listening groups”. People in the first group need to put more effort into their listening, while members in the second group aren’t easily distracted.

The researchers will examine listening in a range of situations, from oneon-one, to group conversations, watching TV and wider social contexts like supermarkets and other noisy environments, and how it effects connection and socialization.

The reason for the change was primarily logistical, city spokesperson Ted Townsend told the Richmond News.

“For the last few years the city had complimentary Canada Day events throughout the rest of village, plus the evening fireworks, underneath the Richmond Canada Day in Steveston umbrella.

If your dentures don’t fit like they used to, it may just be time for a tune-up.

Sonia Raeisi, a registered denturist at Richmond Dental Clinic, explained that over time the firm fit clients experienced with a new set of dentures can change, depending on denture wear and possible gum and bone changes.

Bone loss can be a factor, but materials in the dentures can also break down during use, resulting in subtle changes in fit.

So, if you are experiencing some issues, a checkup and free consultation is the route to go.

“The teeth in dentures are made from resin and, with use, they do wear down. That, along with bone loss, can lead to an issue of fit and function,” Raeisi said.

“Bone loss is most always a factor,” she said, adding age doesn’t always play a role in that scenario. “It happens with everybody, but it depends on the individual who may have a condition such as osteoporosis. They may have more bone loss than someone else.

“I have patients in their 30s and 40s who have barely any bone, and others in the 70s and 80s who have decent amounts,” she explained. “So, the condition is not always age-related. It depends more on the individual.”

One factor that can play a role in dentures that need their fit checked is how long a patient has had them.

“The longer they have been without teeth,

usually, they experience more bone loss,” Raeisi said.

When denture fit becomes an issue it can lead to situations where food can get trapped underneath them.

Ill-fitting dentures can also result in sore spots along pressure areas of a patient’s gums.

“When that happens, the efficiency of chewing food can then be compromised,” Raeisi explained.

In that case, depending on the age of the dentures, they can be re-lined along the tissue side of the dentures, or replaced entirely. Re-lining can be done within a day, and replacement can take two to three weeks.

If clients have partial dentures, the health of their remaining teeth can also be vital when it comes to the fit.

In that case, Richmond Denture Clinic offers the services of a dentist on a monthly basis who can provide a check up on their natural teeth.

“A checkup on the health of a patient’s natural teeth can make a big difference if they are wearing partial dentures,” Raeisi said. “That can affect how their dentures fit if they develop tooth decay or have gum issues.”

I had bought a few $20 for $20 from the Royal Canadian Mint and decided I did not want them anymore. When I took them to the bank they would not take them and they sent me to your store, However you would not take them either.What is going on with these coins?

With water mains, it’s not a question of if; it’s a question of when it’s going to leak. If your house was built in the 70’s it’s almost certain that your water main was run in copper.Over time the copper,buried in soil, will break down and deteriorate.Water mains often become kinked or damaged from tree roots putting pressure on them. At some point in the future, you are going to spring a leak. Depending on your landscaping, the replacement will involve digging by hand or by machine, a minimum of 18” deep, from the city supplied, water service valve, up to the connection point in your home.

An option to digging is to do a water-main pull, (or Trenchless Water Main).

This involves fishing a cable through the existing water line and connecting the other end to a winch. This will remove the old line and install the new line at the same time. It is much less intrusive and much less expensive.

The limitation to this technique is that if you wait until the line breaks,it may be kinked, which can make it impossible to fish a cable through and you could be forced to dig.

Most plumbers these days use plastic water service piping to replace water mains due to the high cost of copper. As a good practice, we include a new pressure reducing valve, (PRV) and shut-off valve with any water main install. If you are planning a driveway replacement or re-landscaping the yard, don’t forget your water main. It will save you a headache down the road.

They were immensely popular and sold out immediately. Then the banks were flooded with these coins being returned to the banks. All the coins had been removed from their packaging and were now loose coins. It turns out that all of these coins were bought by people using credit cards. They received Aeroplan miles or 2% cash back from their cards. The Royal Mint and the Bank of England immediately changed the policy and made these “coins” only souvenirs with no cash value or in other words they were now demonitized.

The same thing is happening here in Canada with clients that I know of buying thousands of dollars of these coins on their credit cards and receiving bonuses that their cards give. I know a person who racked up so many Aeroplan miles that he took 4 trips for free. I tell people that if they phoned up their local bank and asked for a special $20 bill in a special package and- wanted it mailed to them for free but also to be able to charge it to their credit card to receive that 2% cash back, the bank would hang up while laughing at you. This is why the banks do not want them. The Royal Canadian mint store here in Vancouver and the actual Mint in Ottawa will not take them.

The Royal Canadian Mint has now stopped producing these type of coins as they were being flooded with complaints from people trying to get their money back from the government.

Therefore, this is why I will not take them. I feel sorry for people but if I cannot even break even on a deal then I cannot do the deal.

A display of traditional carved and woven artifacts by four Musqueam artists, as well as a performance by the Coast Salish Tsatsu Stalquayu, known as the Coastal Wolf Pack, will celebrate the conclusion of Musqueam artist workshops held at Brighouse Library.

Celebration of Musqueam Expression, a free event on June 16, 2-4 p.m. will feature the work of carvers Martin Sparrow and Richard Campbell, and weavers Gary Point and Sandra Guerin. The four artists hosted a series of classes aimed at teaching Richmondites more about Musqueam culture and heritage.

The 2019 RichCity Idol winner is Mariam El Lahham, a Grade 9 student from Hugh Boyd secondary.

Mariam grabbed the title at the 16th annual singing contest, held at a packed Gateway Theatre on Wednesday evening.

She was chosen by three esteemed judges and via an audience vote from a group of 10 finalists, each one representing a Richmond secondary school.

Mariam took home the top prize of a video-recording package at Blue Light Studios in Vancouver.

Second place went to Charlie Barstow, of McMath, with Liam Fetigan, of Burnett, in third.

RichCity Idol was started in 2004 by Richmond high school students Natasha Jung and Martin Hui and following students have continued the tradition of organizing and hosting the event ever since.

D-Day vet, 97, attends 75th anniversary After landing on D-Day they continued to move inland to Caen and other regions of France before heading into Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

A Second World War veteran from Richmond was front and centre in Normandy, France this week for the 75th anniversary of the famous D-Day landings.

George Chow, 97, accompanied Governor General of Canada Julie Payette, along with other Canadian veterans, at a commemorative ceremony in Chambois, France on Tuesday, two days ahead of the June 6 anniversary.

Ceremonies were taking place across the Normandy coast this week to mark the day that Allied Forces sailed across the English Channel and stormed into German-occupied France in 1944.

Chow, born in Victoria, in 1921, was a gunner in the 2nd Army Group Royal Artillery (AGRA).

They were lucky when they came off the landing craft tank on the beaches of Normandy as the water was only nine inches deep.

Chow later volunteered to prepare for the “Pacific theatre” after the victory in Europe, but his new assignment ended soon after successive atomic bombs were dropped on Japan.

After the war, Chow joined the 43rdHeavy Anti-Aircraft of the Royal Canadian Artillery as a gunnery instructor and reached the rank of Master Warrant Officer, holding the position of Battery Sergeant Major upon retirement.

He was awarded numerous war medals and the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD). In 2012, Chow was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

And in October 2014, he was awarded the rank of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French government and was subsequently presented the Medal of Legion of Honour by Consul General Jean-Christophe Fleury of the Consulate General of France.

Wildcats sizzle in Okanagan heat The McMath Wildcats sizzled in the Okanagan heat for their bestever performance at the B.C. Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships.

It began on Friday at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna when the Wildcats 4x100 senior boys relay team of Tanin Seward, Liam McLeod, Serge Serbinenko and Carson Bradley captured gold in electrifying fashion.

Bradley made up about a one metre deficit on the final leg to narrowly edge Vancouver College at the finish line with a winning time of 43.09 seconds.

Bradley then closed out his high school career with two more medals — silver in the 400 metres and bronze over 200.

McMath’s junior girls finished second in the overall team standings, doing plenty of damage on the track.

The 4x400 relay team of Sophie James, Meghan Smith, Claire Bosma and Selin Tasdemir closed out the meet Saturday afternoon by winning gold in a new provincial record time of 4:01.01. Earlier, Isabella Schaffer joined Smith, Bosma and James to win silver in the 4x100.

James added a third medal, earning silver in the 300 metre hurdles.

Tasdemir added a silver in the 800.

McMath’s Grade 8 boys team was fifth overall, led by Jackson Bradley, Carson’s young brother. He captured the 200 metres (23.86) and was second in the 400 (52.84).

Wildcats coach Bob Riddell was

thrilled with his team’s performance and praised the mentorship of the Kajaks Track and Field Club.

Other highlight for city athletes included Richmond Christian’s Josh Woolgar winning silver in the senior boys’ 3,000 metres. He was also fourth over 1,500 metres.

Woolgar then joined Romain Tourvielle DeLabrouhe, Elijah Kim and Joel Ketler to capture silver in the 4x400 relay — an outstanding feat given the size of the school.

Strikers turn late invite into top 8 finish at provincials The McRoberts Strikers literally came out of nowhere to produce a top eight finish at the B.C. AA Girls Soccer Championships in Campbell River.

The Strikers’ bid to be part of the 16-team tournament looked to be over after finishing third in last month’s Richmond-Vancouver playoffs. They were trimmed 1-0 by Notre Dame in the semi-finals then watched the Jugglers fall to Crofton House in penalty kicks — resulting in both private schools securing the two available B.C. berths. A Notre Dame win would have at least forced a match-up with Crofton House for second place.

However, two days later it was determined the zone would be awarded an additional berth thanks to its overall strength after the Northwest B.C. region decided not to attend.

Suddenly, the Strikers were on their way to Vancouver Island.

They were seeded 16th then promptly showed they deserved to be there. McRoberts hung tough with eventual champion and top

The Strikers moved onto placement play where their short bench caught up with them.

Already missing three players to injuries, two more starters were on the limp. They still hung tough with Crofton House — having a controversial goal called back then surrendering the go-ahead tally late in the second half.

McRoberts then closed out the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Brooks (Powell River) to wind up eighth.

McRoberts Strikers earned a late invite to the B.C. AA Girls Soccer Championships in Campbell River and then produced a top eight finish. ranked St. Thomas More to open the tournament, dropping a 1-0 decision.

The Strikers were turned away on some quality chances and the Burnaby Catholic school broke the deadlock on a rebound after an incredible save by goalkeeper Tamryn Ward.

The girls re-grouped from the tough loss to defeat Ballenas (2-0) and LV Rogers (4-2) to

finish second in their pool group.

“We definitely felt like the underdogs going in ranked as the last berth for the championship tournament. Our team rose to the occasion and played two of their best games of the season on that first day,” said Strikers coach Sarah Da Costa. “We are so incredibly proud of the team’s performance. They truly proved

Five graduating players didn’t need to be reminded what the McMath Wildcats had accomplished on a sun-baked field at Cloverdale Athletic Park last Friday.

Morgan Flynn, Samantha Trueman, Olivia Tweedlie, Morgan Game and Bella Lawson helped the Wildcats capture bronze at the B.C. AAA Girls Soccer Championships after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panorama Ridge.

It was the Steveston school’s first medal at the tournament in 11 years and it came after a stretch of heartbreak appearances that saw the Wildcats eliminated from podium contention on penalty kicks each time. Now the Grade 12s walk away from their high school careers with their first-ever medal.

“Some of us started in our Grade 9 year so we have been here for a while,” smiled Flynn who will be continuing her career at University of Idaho in September. “A lot of us come from different club teams and

different age divisions too. For us to come together and do this is amazing.”

Two of the Grade 12s even had to pass up on competing at the B.C. Track and Field Championships in Kelowna to take one last run at soccer glory. It proved to be well worth it.

“It something about being on a team and it’s just a lot better to win as a team,” said Trueman.

With the 16-team tournament offering just four berths to the championship round, the Wildcats avoided penalty kicks this time by capturing their group with three straight victories over Claremont (2-0), South Delta (1-0) and Handsworth (2-0).

That set the stage for Thursday afternoon’s semi-final encounter with defending champion Centennial.

McMath trailed 2-0 when Madi Elcomb found the top corner to put her team on the board. The Centaurs re-stored the two-goal lead but Flynn put the Wildcats back within striking distance. The Coquitlam school added an insurance goal and went on to repeat as B.C. champions with a win over Fleetwood Park.

The bronze game saw McMath control much of the play in the opening minutes, result in a goal from Teagan Ng. That proved to be the game winner despite some late pressure from Panorama that forced goalkeeper Makayla Kusch to make a terrific stop.

Both Ng and Kusch are in Grade 9 and members of the Coastal Cup champion U15 Richmond Strikers. Such is the uniqueness of high school soccer that brings various age and competitive levels together. The Wildcats roster featured players from Grades 8 to 12.

“It’s a chemistry. When I was picking the team it was ‘what are we looking for?’ We were looking for certain things in particular positions and hoping that magic formula would result in a top four finish. It seemed to have worked,” smiled head coach Mandhir Punia who also happens to guide the Strikers.

“The big thing for me was always giving seniors an outlet to leave on a high and they did that today.”

The Wildcats roster also features: Sarah Dawson, Tamar Gordon, Lexy Shury, Kennedy Walrund, Jaya Punia, Alyssa Bhandyal, Abby

McMath was the only non-Fraser Valley school to finish in the top eight. The new Fraser South Zone

is shaping up to be very competitive next season with four of the top five finishers from this year’s tournament.

If it is indeed an end of an era for high school boys rugby in Richmond, the McMath Wildcats made sure it finished on a winning note.

The Wildcats closed out their season with comefrom-behind victory over Cowichan on Saturday in Abbotsford to earn fifth place at the B.C. “AAA” Tier Two Championships.

B.C. School Sports’ recent approval of Rugby Sevens for the 2019-20 school year

will very likely pave the way for the Wildcats to focus solely on that version of the sport moving forward. It could also breathe new life into other city schools that now suddenly only need a dozen student athletes to field a team instead of 25 for the 15s version.

“We came into this tournament with only 21 players available for three tough games in four days then we lost our captain (senior Ben Spare) to injury,” explained McMath head coach Mike Charlton.

“We have a very young team with a lot of speed.

That’s why perhaps it’s good to get a commitment from 14 or 15 of them and just focus on sevens. We also have no size next year so perhaps we showcase and play to our strength and see how it goes (in sevens).”

The Wildcats’ goal coming into this campaign was to advance to the B.C. tier two tournament that is designed for the ninth through 16 ranked AAA teams.

McMath was seeded fifth in the bracket and lost an 18-13 quarter-final overtime heartbreaker to Nanaimo after opening up a 10-0 lead.

The boys bounced back with their most complete game of the season in a 54-5 rout of Belmont — before completing the Vancouver Island trifecta with a win against Cowichan, thanks to a terrific second half.

“I’m very proud of the boys,” added Charlton.

“The Belmont game was best rugby we played all year.

BOOTSVELD, Herman Josef Herman Josef Bootsveld, age 88, went to be with his Lord on May 11, 2019 in Maple Ridge.

BALFOUR, Ella Ella Balfour died peacefully on May 26, 2019 in Richmond, B.C. She was predeceased by her dear husband George; daughter Deborah; granddaughter Rachel; parents John and Ida Bosche; brothers Ed, Harold and Lorenz Bosche and sister Sophie Garvin.

She is lovingly remembered by her son Jim (Heather) Balfour, daughters Ruth Balfour (Neal Boyle) and Brenda (Rob) White , grandchildren Bryce, Dylan, Jared, Liam and Taylor; sister Elsa Stann and brother Ron Bosche, along with many extended family and friends.

Ella was born in Pavlodar in the former Soviet Union on October 18, 1929. She was a talented seamstress, teacher and artist. She and George were avid travelers and especially enjoyed cruises. As a lifelong champion of adult education, she worked for the Vancouver School Board. In retirement, she enjoyed many hours with family, friends, Joyful Noises, the Embroidery Guild and the Vancouver Guild of Fabric Arts.

While her death brings sadness, we are grateful for the life she lived.

A Celebration of her Life, will take place on June 15, 2019 at 11:00am, at Gilmore Park United Church at 8060 No 1 Road, Richmond, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pancreatic Research BC Cancer Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

He was born on August 14, 1930 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He married Catherina Bootsveld on August 2, 1952. They moved to Canada early in their marriage. Herman worked as a mechanic for many years and was affectionately known throughout his life as “Mr. Fix-It”. His love of God, His Wife, Starbucks and Cookies will be remembered affectionately by his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, his daughter Alice Littler and 2 grandchildren.

She worked for Canadian Airlines for 21 years and made many lifelong friends there. Nan was a loving, generous and kind lady. She had a special fondness for children and was well known on Mowbray Road, Richmond, as being "Auntie Nan" to all her neighbors’ children, particularly the Laing and Josephs families.

In her senior years, she was active at the Minoru Seniors Centre where she met many friends and loved nothing more than participating in Scottish Dancing and organizing their Scrabble Club.

Special thanks to all friends, family, and caregivers who attended to Nan in her last few months of life.
