No red carpet for China Dear Editor, Recent media reports indicate that Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) is planning to give a red-carpet treatment to lobbyists from China, as the Chinese government will be contributing $6,000 for sponsorship of its convention in September. This is very inappropriate.

Since Meng Wanzhou’s arrest and detention at YVR, China’s attitude towards Canada has been nothing but hostile.

Two Canadians are suffering in Chinese jails without any reason. On top of that, China is punishing our farmers by not accepting our canola and pork.

Here, we have UBCM, a well-respected provincial body of our municipal governments, giving the Chinese lobbyists the red–carpet treatment at its upcoming convention in September.

I commend our media and Port Coquitlam mayor Brad West for highlighting this issue.

UBCM should have a second look at this arrangement. It should decline to accept any money from the Chinese government.

In view of the current situation, China does not deserve the red-carpet treatment. UBCM should put a stop to it immediately.

I love this community Dear Editor, On July 6, I attended the Richmond Community Day event held at the Richmond Olympic Oval with my family and friends.

Bowling space could easily be shared up the way Open letter to mayor and council, By now, the entire city knows about the vote for a $5.3 million lawn bowling clubhouse, and the reaction has been significantly negative.

There is a way to turn this into a winning situation for Richmond and its residents, and that is to add floors to the new building to accommodate some of the non-profit organizations that need operating space.

Richmond’s Non-Profit Space Needs Review revealed that local non-profits (NPOs) will need 36,700 square feet of dedicated space in the short term, including multipurpose activity rooms, workshop/training rooms, offices and meeting spaces.

Co-location of agencies in community service hubs is a positive solution.

The new lawn bowling clubhouse will have 4,900 sq. ft. of space including a 2,500 sq. ft. multi-purpose room.

That aside, what would happen if more floors were added to this single-storey building? At least one member of council is on record as opposing this idea because of intrusion into the park.

However, the current clubhouse is mere metres from a newly built 15-story high-rise that looms over the park.

Marion Smith believes she has the solution to the bowling club conundrum. Photo submitted would help to soften the transition from this imposing building into the park space, as illustrated in the attached photo.

If two new storeys for NPOs were added, that would be 9,800 square feet of space, or just over a quarter of the 36,700 square feet that are required in the short term.

Like most taxpayers, I don’t see the value in building a new lawn bowling clubhouse for over $5 million.

But if we must, then let’s maximize the community value of this expenditure.

Re: “One-time payouts bump up salaries,” News, July 4.

As the city pockets millions of dollars with inflated market home values, have they considered a reduction in taxes for the citizens instead of a payout to a few?

Great work on reporting city increases to the public.

As a Richmond taxpayer, I am stunned by these large pay scales and handouts which are way above the private sector scales and even as compared to other government entities.

No wonder our taxes keep going up, despite poor road maintenance and lighting (Cooney and No. 4 roads are full of potholes and shoddy patchwork), poor city lighting across main intersections of Westminster Highway and poor dike maintenance going from Garry Point to Terra

These payouts need to be audited to bring these scales in line with other organizations. It’s simply over the top.

What are the councillors doing approving these large increases?

It may be time for a change to provide better leadership.

Give bowling cash to soccer Dear Editor, Re: “Couns. Defend $5.3M bowling decision,” Letters, June 27.

Perhaps Couns. Bill McNulty and Linda McPhail and the others who voted for this expenditure of public money should reconsider their decision.

Their letter to the editor is a weak defense.

The bowling club is a members-only organization that serves 280 people and is not open to the general public.

Lawn bowling is a seasonal sport, so the facility is not used in the winter or on rainy days; we have lots of those.

The amount being spent could be better used to build dressing room, shower and toilet facilities at the Hugh Boyd soccer park.

The playing fields are used all year round and are enjoyed by thousands of players and spectators.

This weekend, the Nations Cup soccer tournament will be held (this is the 40th year of this highly prestigious tournament). It is the foremost amateur adult summer soccer event in Western Canada.

There are some facilities in the West Richmond Community Centre, but not nearly enough to accommodate the players.

Other communities, such as Surrey, Coquitlam and Vancouver have first-class facilities and it’s about time we had the same at Hugh Boyd.

miracle cure for all society’s ills Dear Editor,

Re: “Rainbow shines despite deluge,” News, June 27 Maria Rantanen’s article gives an interesting synopsis of the prevailing diversity of opinion on the subject of the rainbow crosswalk, including some humour.

The article is a potpourri of sentiments ranging from “confusion,” to distraction, to funding, to disharmony, to fear and misunderstanding, to oppressive families, to human rights and social justice, to harmony via erasure, to health and suicide and last, but not least, six instead of seven colours — therefore not a rainbow at all.

If one had a magic wand and painted a rainbow that alleviated the confusion, pain and struggles facing

LGBTQ2S people, that eliminated the anxiety, confusion, misunderstanding and shame that some families feel, that converted hate and bullying into compassion … then let’s paint that rainbow.

But there is no magic rainbow and a rainbow crosswalk will not solve any of these issues.

There are, however, a whole range of different thoughts, ideas, beliefs, emotions, challenges and struggles, government and legislative policies, educational programs and abundant exposure.

The money could just as well have been spent on counselling services and Richmond would be just as “inclusive and caring.”

In May, for the sixth month in a row, the number of mental health incidents that Richmond RCMP dealt with is above the five-year average and this number is expected to grow.

RCMP responded to 164 mental health calls, up by three per cent from April and by 10 per cent from May 2018. There have been no patterns or trends identified for the mental health calls, according to a report presented to Richmond council’s community safety meeting this week.

The Richmond RCMP are planning on introducing a mental-health car as part of its fleet.

The monthly report to council also includes statistics on tickets given to drivers. In May there were 133 distracted driving tickets issued, down from 161 in April and 207 in March. There were 36 impaired drivers caught in May, up from 23 in April, and 439 speeding tickets were issued.

In May, there were five incidents of arson, 12 serious assaults, 25 auto thefts, which is up 47 per cent from April, and 43 residential break-ins, which is down seven per cent from April.

The City of Richmond has cited potential litigation as the reason for not releasing documents about the almost two-year delay in opening the Minoru Centre for Active Living.

The city, responding to a freedom of information (FOI) request made four months ago by the Richmond News, said they have reviewed almost 4,000 pages of documents pertaining to the FOI. However, they could only release three confidential memos and the briefing notes prepared for council

Despite being deemed “confidential,” the memos reveal little more than what has already been released publicly.

The original FOI request was sent to the city Feb. 21, when the combined aquatic, fitness and seniors centre was almost two years behind schedule.

The request was delayed twice, once allowed by the Act, and the second time after an application was made by the city to the privacy commissioner.

On Thursday, July 4, the city responded with the four documents and a letter that stated the construction delays are a “multi-faceted issue which

could involve litigation.”

It went on to state city staff have considered the request against the city’s legal obligations “to protect the city’s position in potential litigation with third parties.”

There are no legal proceedings underway at the moment, city spokesperson Clay Adams noted, and they still don’t know why the pool failed or who’s to blame.

He added that when construction projects have delays, there’s a risk one of the parties will pursue legal action, so the reference to “potential litigation” reflects that possibility.

The aquatic centre remains closed.

City won’t pay for pool repairs The City of Richmond says it is not on the hook to fix a new pool at the Minoru Centre for Active Living as its repairs will be paid by insurance.

But five months after the base of Lap Pool 1 at the new aquatic centre shifted

so that it couldn’t hold water, the cause still hasn’t been determined.

City spokesperson Clay Adams said there is no timeline on when the investigation will be concluded.

When it is, though, Adams added, the city will let

the public know what went wrong and how it will be fixed as well as a timeline, including if it’s somebody’s fault or nobody’s fault.

“We certainly have a responsibility to the community to let them know what went wrong,” Adams said,

adding the caveat that the cause might limit what they can say.

Once the cause is known, then it will be determined whose insurance will cover the cost.

“We try to think that the individual needed them more than the gardener and that they resorted to theft out of desperation.”

Sarina Clay-Smith, urban agriculture program coordinator for Richmond Food Security, tried to remain positive when she comes across an apparent theft from one of the city’s community gardens.

But this season, according to ClaySmith, has been one of the worst for people pilfering the fruits of community gardeners’ labour in Richmond.

None of this is new to the city, however, and the Richmond News has published several stories over the last few years to that effect.

“Theft has been a recurring issue in many of the gardens, and this season has been particularly bad already,” said Clay-Smith.

“Garlic, rhubarb, peppers and many other vegetables have gone missing or have been damaged by non-gardeners.

“Damaged vegetables is heartbreaking and completely unacceptable as it not only ruins the harvest for this year, but for potential future harvests if the plant is damaged.”

One of the gardens hit worst by theft this season, explained Clay-Smith, has been Garratt Gardens, at the Wellness Centre near Blundell Centre.

As the program coordinator for the community gardens, walking around the city’s community gardens is “one of the great pleasures of this position,” added Clay-Smith.

“These gardens are a product of gardeners’ financial, physical and emotional investment.

Jason Guo was so upset after his pup died following an arduous flight from China that he set up a foundation to cope with his grief and help local animal charities at the same time.

And last week, the Grade 11 student handed over a cheque for $1,500 to the RAPS Animal Hospital in Richmond, after two months of soliciting donations for his foundation, named Dora after the pup that he lost.

Jason felt compelled to raise the money after his four-month-old pet poodle – which was being sent from China as a gift from a relative – died after apparently being confined to its crate in a cold, cargo-hold of a plane for five days.

According to a heartbroken Jason, the transportation company was supposed to fly his dog directly to YVR, but it ended up going via Tokyo and Hong Kong and was deprived of food and water.

The young dog died after spending a night at a veterinarian hospital in Vancouver.

“I have experience (with losing animals) and I don’t want to see anyone go through that,” said Jason of the reasons for his foundation and

She explained that Jason’s cousin in China wanted to surprise him with a special gift — a puppy — so he hired a China-based pet transportation company to send Dora over.

“We were told the flight would be as minimal as possible, but it turned out to be three flights. ...The flight was delayed, so Dora spent days in the cage,” added Jason.

It’s the little school that no longer could.

After years of watching its enrolment dwindle and cancelling its kindergarten program, the Richmond Board of Education has decided there will be no classes at Sea Island elementary in September, effectively shuttering the school for 12 months.

With only 13 registered students for grades 1 to 3 in the fall, the school board hastily called a meeting last week to discuss the issue.

The board’s vote was unanimous — with trustee Richard Lee absent — and it was followed by calls of “shame” from the audience of Burkeville families, who had come to voice their opposition to the recommendation from school superintendent, Scott Robinson.

The anger and frustration of Burkeville families at the board meeting was palpable as 11 speakers, including one student from the school, addressed the trustees.

There was talk of fairness and rights, with accusations of the school district not trying to help the school to stay viable and criticism of the speed by which the decision was being made.

Burkeville resident Peter Jarvenpaa criticized the timing of the meeting notification, late on a Friday after the school year was over and before the Canada Day long weekend and said that not calling it a school closure was a “Donald Trump-style spinning of the alternate facts.”

Sea Island parent Lori Cockerill pointed out to the board that some parents found out about the meeting and possible decision the night before.

“I don’t think that the decision that is in front of you tonight is defensible, given the timeline that we’re talking about here,” Cockerill said at the meeting.

Cockerill’s eight-year-old son was ready to go from Grade 2 to Grade 3 at Sea Island elementary this fall.

She was gone over the long weekend without access to the Internet and then, on

Tuesday, saw posts on Facebook about the meeting. The letter to Sea Island parents had gone into her junk folder.

The board’s decision has left Cockerill and her family scrambling and she feels rushed to make a decision. Cockerill said she doesn’t know much about Brighouse elementary, where displaced Sea Island students are being sent.

“I don’t know anything about the curriculum, I don’t even know how big the school is. I know, based on the Fraser (Institute rankings), it’s not a great performing school,” she told the News.

“If I had had more time, I probably would have selected a different school.”

Cockerill said, after speaking at the meeting, she felt the trustees came to the meeting with their decision already made.

Robinson explained at the meeting that, in April, there were 22 students registered at Sea Island for the fall, but this dropped to 17 by the middle of June and on June 23, there were only 13 students.

He informed the board on June 24 about the situation, and the agenda for the meeting was released to the public on Friday, June 28, the same day all the parents were sent emails letting them know about the upcoming meeting. An email was sent to parents of registered students using the most current source of contact information, the school district clarified.

The drop in enrolment was “unexpected and significant,” said school district spokesperson David Sadler. “The district understands that this is a difficult time for Sea Island families and will be working closely with them to develop a transition plan that meets their needs,” he added.

Facilities plan highlights Sea Island issues The Long-Range Facilities Plan (LRFP), which was adopted by the school district in June, states that Sea Island might not be sustainable because of the “small school age population and maturing trends” in Burkeville.

Parents question school board rationale The physical condition of the school, built for 192 students, is rated as poor, its seismic risk is high and, at 70 years old, it is the oldest school in the district.

Speakers disputed the forecast enrolment numbers, saying young families are moving into the neighbourhood and there are 14 kids in the local preschool. They also point out that the school generates revenue through leases for preschool, CUPE and park-and-fly.

But the school district said the recommendation was based on the quality of the educational program.

“The decision to not offer an educational program was in no way influenced by expenses and revenues associated with Sea Island,” said Sadler. “The decision was based on the quality of the educational program the district could reasonably offer, given such a small number of students.”

A raucous meeting As trustees asked questions and made comments about the recommendation, interjections thrown out from the audience cut through the board room.

Board chair Ken Hamaguchi pointed out the school district was following its bylaw and the School Act and that this was not a school closure, rather “taking the year off.”

This was followed by scoffing from the audience.

Trustee Donna Sargent said the board has been talking about Sea Island for a long time, trying to make something happen there, but it’s not as easy as just moving a program to the school.

“Our superintendent has said this is not a viable educational program,” Sargent said.

“And I think we have to take the educational experience seriously.”

She said there weren’t enough students to hold classes, adding that the school district has to manage all facilities, and keep all schools viable.

“For a board member to keep seeing the enrolment drop in a school and just let it flounder is not acceptable and I know that’s hurtful to hear, but I have to do my job,” Sargent said. “It’s easy to take the easy way out. It’s not easy, we have to make

An audience member replied to Sargent’s comments saying “You created this situation.”

Trustee Debbie Tablotney said she started her career as a trustee fighting school closure and has seen many schools close.

“None of those schools that we closed were at 13,” she said. “That’s pretty low.

I have to trust the superintendent when he says that (Sea Island is) not a viable program.”

In her comments on the recommendation, Trustee Sandra Nixon said this was a “difficult decision for all.” The quality of education must be the top priority, she said, and other educational opportunities exist close by in the school district.

A homeless shelter, plans for which previously stirred up neighbours, opened its doors on Wednesday.

The Richmond News reported two years ago that the site — a 36-bed shelter at 12040 Horseshoe Way in Ironwood — would replace a smaller, 10-bed, men-only shelter run by the Salvation Army on Shell Road, after that location received an eviction notice.

The new facility will be inclusive to men and women, said Kim Decker, spokesperson for the City of Richmond.

She added that the city recognized that people at risk of homelessness are both men and women and “we want this shelter to accommodate both and more (people).”

The new shelter, also being run by the Salvation Army, will be staffed around the clock and have hot showers and three meals a day including a hot dinner. It is also pet-friendly.

Of the 36 beds, 20 are for men, 10 for women and six are flex beds, which can be assigned to couples or people

who are ill.

The city-owned building, purchased in August 2017 for $6 million, was a “shell of a warehouse” at the time of purchase, said Decker.

“It’s been my experience that some homeless people are experiencing mental illness; they can be scary sometimes, but generally speaking, the people in our shelter are there based on criteria of behaviour,” said Chiu at the time.

B.C. Housing contributed $5.7 million to turn the building into a liveable space.

Almost two years ago, the News reported how businesses close to the new location protested the planned shelter, citing safety and security concerns, plus a lack of public consultation by the city.

Richmond RCMP offers online crime reporting tool Valerie Leung

The Richmond community can now report non-emergency crimes online.

On July 3, the Richmond detachment of the RCMP made the online crime reporting tool public following Surrey’s launch last month.

The portal is used for cases where no suspects or witnesses were/are present and when no police follow-up is needed.

The public can use the new online tool to report the following: Damage/mischief to property under $5,000; Damage/mischief to a vehicle under $5,000; Hit and run to an unoccupied vehicle or property; Theft of bicycle under $5,000; Theft under $5,000; Theft from vehicle under $5,000; Lost property.

“This has been a much sought after feature by the community,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

Cpl. Hwang added that the new online tool allows front-line officers to focus on higher priority calls.

Amid public criticism of the $5.3 million price tag to rebuild the Richmond Lawn Bowling clubhouse, the city said they believe it’s a “prudent” cost estimate.

A City of Richmond spokesperson said the cost estimate was done by a “local professional quantity surveyor with significant local experience.”

The cost of the lawnbowling club rebuild includes more than just the hard, physical construction costs, he added.

It includes, for example, design, permits and project management, demolition, a 20-to-30-per-cent contingency as well as cost escalation.

It was also pointed out that, when considering the cost of the lawn-bowling facility, it’s important to take into consideration that its anticipated lifespan is several decades into the future.

The lawn bowling club rebuild has been on council’s radar for the better part of two decades, and was identified as a top priority for the Richmond Sport Council’s strategic plan and as one of council’s top priorities in 2016.

One chick was killed and two adult cranes were injured by golf-ball strikes, said Myles Lamont, who has volunteered to look after the dwindling number of metre-tall cranes at Country Meadows since 2013.

Since then, Lamont is aware of at least eight birds who have been killed or injured by strikes on the No. 6 Road course.

The most devastating injuries are often to the birds’ legs, because in those cases they often have to be euthanized.

In the most recent cases, one bird was left with a broken wing and the other, a broken leg.

“It’s always an ongoing trend, and one that doesn’t seem to be getting any better,” Lamont said.

“And the frustrating part with all this, of course, is that there’s only 10 to 12 breeding pairs left in the Fraser Valley.”

“Most times when they go missing, it’s because of a predator,” said Susan Hogler. She also said that the cranes like the golf course and feel safe there.

“There’s no guarantee that anyone’s going to do anything to oblige by those rules, and it certainly doesn’t prevent any accidental strikes from occurring,” said Lamont.

He wants the rear part of the property to be fenced off, which would protect the chicks from golf-ball strikes until they are old enough to fly. Another option would be to remove the birds from the course, or improve the wetland site so the birds are less inclined to go on the golf course.

The sandhill cranes are “quite revered” by the club’s many members, said Susan Hogler, adding that both golfers and course marshals look out for the birds and are proud to have them on the property.

The cranes nest in the small wetlands just north of the golf course, one of the few wetlands left in the region.

After the cranes have nested, said Lamont, they often bring their chicks across to the golf course, as the wide, open green space allows the birds to see predators coming from a far distance.

In late June, Country Meadows put up signage to warn golfers about the cranes. Harry Hogler said that the signs were put up at each of the tees warning people not to tee off when

Lamont has contacted the provincial and federal governments to inform them of the ongoing issue and spike in injuries, adding that both the golf ball strikes and subsequent deaths are breaches of the B.C. Wildlife Act and the Federal Migratory Bird Act. The Hoglers have also spoken to the Ministry of Environment about the cranes.

“They told us there’s not much we can do once (the cranes) have chosen the area,” said Susan Hogler, adding that they have further plans to meet with the ministry for guidance on how to keep the birds “as safe as possible.”

Tokyo’s ramen shop opens first Canadian location Lindsay William-Ross GLACIER MEDIA

A Japanese ramen shop known for its “chicken broth” style of the popular noodle soup will open its first Canadian location in Richmond.

Afuri Ramen + Dumpling is moving in to Dazzling Café’s former location at 140 – 7971 Alderbridge Way, near No. 3 Road.

Afuri Ramen + Dumpling is named after Mt. Afuri, “on the east edge of the Tanzawa mountains in Kanagawa prefecture,” according to the business.

Afuri came stateside in 2016, opening in Portland, Ore. In addition to the Richmond location, the chain is adding a location in Cupertino, Calif.

As Metro Vancouver ramenheads know,

each ramen joint stands out for some aspect of their menu. In the case of Afuri, it’s their chicken broth.

In addition to their Yuzu Shio and other chicken broth-based ramen, Afuri’s ramen selection includes tonkotsu-style (pork broth), tsukemen (cold noodles), and a hazelnut broth ramen. Their noodles are made inhouse and come in thick and thin.

Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find small plates, like fried shishito peppers and stuffed buns, as well as dumplings, and “gohan” dishes – which are dishes served over rice.

Their drink menu includes cocktails, shochu, sake, whiskies and multiple non-alcoholic beverages.

latest mission is to test the potential of the Okanagan in making premium Bordeaux style reds. Formerly a leading partner in Jackson Triggs, Canada’s largest winery, Triggs is now planting roots along the Golden Mile Bench near Oliver.

Culmina’s red grapes are planted on the 10acre Arise Bench which shares many of the characteristics of Bordeaux, France, including the hottest spot on the estate, a prerequisite for ripening reds.

A rising star in the Okanagan is Cabernet Franc. The 2014 Culmina Cab Franc ($38) spends 16 months in French oak and is aged three years in the bottle. As Triggs proudly states, “We build wines that give a lot of

structure. We’re designing wine to go with food and can age. We don’t want wines that will be at their best in six months.”

Triggs describes it as “classic Cab Franc” possessing an “earthy character,” but there’s also a good balance of red currant, sage, cedar and cloves.” Cabernet Franc might be described as the feminine side of its more popular sibling, Cabernet Sauvignon. In its youth it is more fragrant, smoother, and more charming than the tougher and more muscular Cab Sauv.

Triggs adds, “We have some demand for it as a single varietal but a lot of it is used in the blend (Hypothesis). Properly stored it will last 15 to 20 years.” Enjoy with a pork chop and salsa verde.

Next we turn to the most famous grape variety on Earth, Cabernet Sauvignon. Culmina’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon ($39) is aged in 25-per-cent new oak and the rest in one-year-

old casks.

Expect an elegant and dense red with a cherry, blackberry, and vanilla bouquet, flavours of cassis, tobacco, and ripe fruitcake, and a really long finish. Match with blackberry glazed duck or steak tartare.

The 2014 Culmina Merlot ($35) is bigger, fatter and has a longer finish than the Cab Sauv. Here in B.C., Merlot ripens earlier than Cabernet and has been more successful.

Merlot has thinner skins than Cabernet Sauvignon, therefore, the wine is less tannic and doesn’t require as much aging to smooth out the tannins. It is often described as “very approachable” and “restaurant ready.”

This Merlot’s nose displays a plummy character along with dark ripe fruits and a whisper of violets. It is rich, smooth and round with black cherry and chocolate flavours.

Serve with grilled rosemary and balsamic flat iron steak with porcini mushrooms.

Saving the best for last, the 2013 Culmina Hypothesis ($46) is a Bordeaux style blend of 45-per-cent Cabernet Sauviginon, 33-percent Merlot, and 22-per-cent Cabernet Franc.

The Cab Sauv adds texture and tannins for aging potential, the Merlot and Cab Franc contribute softness, and they all add their own unique aromas and flavours.

When asked why he named it Hypothesis, Triggs replied, “Hypothesis means proposal or proposition. To use it was a fitting way to describe our top wine. We would never say that our wine was perfect or the best but rather the best we were able to do that year.”

Triggs added, “Said simply, our 2014 Hypothesis was our very best effort for 2014 including the best blocks, the choice and proportion of each variety, harvest dates, the best coopers and the optimum selection of new versus older barrels, aging time in barrel, aging time in bottle, etc.”

Johnny Tai spent 17 years growing succulents and cacti in his Richmond backyard, which draws hundreds of visitors each year for a free “open garden” exhibition.

The annual exhibition usually lasts for two days in June, featuring cacti from Mexico and the U.S. and succulents from South Africa.

But due to the popularity of Tai’s garden, he takes appointments from people to come and enjoy his backyard.

And each year, several elementary schools in Richmond organize field trips to his garden and he gives them free seeds to practise plant-growing at home.

Tai’s home, in a quiet neighbourhood on Woodhead Road, close to Cambie and Shell roads, doesn’t seem different from the front, until you take a peek around the back.

There, you will see three greenhouses and more than 10,000 plants clustered together.

Tai remembers each scientific name of his plants, even though there are more than 1,500 species in the backyard.

Even more surprising is that, for him, each plant has a personality.

“Succulents symbolize endurance, for they are tenacious plants that can store water in their stems and can even live through strong sunshine,” said Macau-born Tai, 76, in Chinese to the Richmond News’ Mandarin-speaking reporter.

“Cacti has a strong-mind even though its appearance isn’t as charming as roses or other flowers, but it grows where no

“There wasn’t much room to grow plants in Macau and Hong Kong…When I came across (my) backyard, I was so excited that we could turn it into a garden and share our experiences with friends, neighbours and even the younger generation,” said Tai.

A McNair secondary grad is able to pursue her dreams of theatre production after being awarded the Richmond Community Foundation’s largest scholarship.

Olivia Reid-Friesen, a University of Victoria fine arts student, was awarded the $5,000 Phyllis Taylor Scholarship.

In September, she will start a work-study program in the costume shop at the university’s theatre.

“Thanks to Phyllis Taylor, I am living out my dreams of studying and working in theatre,” said Reid-Friesen.

“I am thrilled to continue my studies in stage management and costume construction come fall.

“With this scholarship, I am able to continue doing what I love, serving my community and I am immensely grateful for that opportunity.”

The scholarship was established for performing arts students in 2004 after Phyllis Taylor, a pianist and established Richmond music teacher, passed away.

The foundation received 135 applications from students seeking financial assistance, the largest number of applicants in the foundation’s history.

Of the 41 scholarships awarded for 2019, 39 were given to Richmond high school students, totalling $24,400.

Brycen Ko couldn’t have had a worse start or a better finish.

Fairwinds’ tight, demanding layout took its toll on many of the province’s top juniors this week, but Ko said he enjoyed the challenge and is proud of the fact he stayed patient and avoided many big mistakes. “Golf is fun and we are lucky to have this privilege to be playing and I am just really appreciative of that,” he said.

The 15-year-old from Richmond began last Friday’s final round of the B.C. Junior Boys Championship at Fairwinds Golf Club in Nanoose Bay with a four-shot lead.

Ko hadn’t made anything worse than a bogey in his first 54 holes and started his final round with a double-bogey.

He added a bogey on the third hole and suddenly his four-shot lead was down to a single shot.

“It feels great to be a B.C. Junior champion.

I am just happy that I was able to do the job and it feels great that all the hard work paid off.”

But just when it looked like his young nerves might get the best of him, Ko gathered himself and won the championship in fine style when he chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole.

Crisologo finished second at the B.C. Junior for the second straight year. He fired a twoover 73 on Friday to finish the event at fourover.

“Honestly, I was really tense after that first hole.’ Ko said. “I wasn’t happy about that, but I knew there was lots of golf to go. I knew I just had to try my best to move on from that.

And I think I did a good job of doing that.”

He headed to Simon Fraser University this fall where his old brother Chris enjoyed a decorated collegiate career. Michael, struggled with his putter all week. “He has has got a really good game and I think the future is bright for him,” Crisologo said of Ko.

He sure did. Ko responded with birdies on the fourth and seventh holes that certainly helped settle his nerves. And his closest competitor, fellow Richmond resident Michael Crisologo, could not mount a charge.

He closed with a one-over 72 on Friday and finished the 72-hole event at one-under par.

“I just tried all day to focus on my next shot,” Ko said. “Worrying about my score and the mistakes I made wasn’t going to do anything to help me, so I was trying to do my best on my next shot. I happened to get a couple of birdies (on 4 and 7) and that helped me keep

The One Book, Three Cities book club, launched by Richmond Public Library (RPL) kicked off July 4 and will bring together readers from Richmond’s sister cities, Qingdao and Xiamen in China.

Program participants will be discussing The Life of Pi

“There are themes of growth through adversity, human migration, the difference between truth and belief,” said Lee Anne Smith, RPL’s coordinator of innovation and learning development.

Smith explained that these are universal themes that any country can relate to, adding that a community reading program gives people the opportunity to learn about each other.

The two-month program will include an author meetand-greet, movie night with discussion, walking book club along the river and online discussion forums, which will connect with readers in China.

Extensive research is put into choosing a book for the project. The book has to be available in multiple languages, have a universal, relevant theme and broad appeal and have all three cities agree on it.

The project is a joint initiative between Richmond’s Sister Cities Advisory Committee (SCAC) and the RPL.

SCAC approached the library with a project to create new cultural and learning ideas in May 2018.

One Book, Three Cities is open to the public for teens and adults and runs until Aug. 31.

Library hosts Life of Pi author A Canadian author is coming to the Richmond Public Library (RPL) for a one-nightonly event this summer.

RPL’s One Book, Three Cities program, which launched on July 4, is inviting Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi, to come and chat with his readers and fans.

Martel will talk about his writing journey and upcoming projects, as well as answer questions from the audience at the event.

The event takes place in the Launchpad at the Brighouse branch of RPL on Aug. 1 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

A new exhibition at the Richmond Art Gallery shines a light on what’s happening beneath our feet in the city.

The installation — dig as deep as the darkness, by Alberta-based artist Rita McKeough — features the ever-changing environment below the city.

Themes of the exhibition revolve around the idea of the vulnerability of the environment and forces of the natural world.

There will be sound, video and interactive objects that show land and human development as well as the impact on animal and plant species.

“Set from the perspective of displaced local flora and fauna, you are immersed in their plight,” said Dylan McHugh, Vancouver artist and guest curator at the gallery.

“You are roused to consider our relationship to nature and the interconnectedness of life.”

McKeough, in general, focuses on ethical and social relationships to the natural world in her practice.

Her work challenges the status quo and champions change, while featuring themes like the food we eat, the land we use or the gas we burn.

The opening reception is on July 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public. The show runs from July 20 to Sept. 15.

A Richmond company has received certification that, not only are its products sustainably sourced, but that its workforce is treated well and able to give back to the community.

Ocean Brands, a supplier of canned seafood under the Gold Seal and Ocean’s brands, received a B Corporation certification after a rigorous nine-month process, showing they run their business with high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

Ian Ricketts, president of the company, told the Richmond News they’ve been working for several years towards improving their business practises.

“Since 2012, the company has been very focused on the sustainability of the products we’re selling (and) really paying attention to our community and our people and the greater world,” Ricketts said.

But the pitfall of trying to do it on their own was like “drinking your own Kool-Aid,” he said. That’s not where he wants the company to be in 2019.

“We need to be, as a business owner and operator, aware of the changing landscape and relationship to our environment,” he said.

The company was trying on their own to find sustainable ways to conduct their business, but when they discovered B Corp, it immediately felt like the “right fit,” Ricketts said.

The B Corp process, which is verified by a third party and uses scientific and measured methods, was rigorous, taking about

nine months to complete, he added.

Many people think there’s a trade-off when conducting business, that to make a profit, you can’t also look after the environment and your people as well as you’d like to. Ricketts disagrees.

Ocean Brands has a workforce of 32, and their health and wellness are important for the company. Every employee gets four weeks of vacation starting in their first year.

The company allows employees to work from home to reduce carbon emissions as well as the stress of being on the road during a daily commute.

They also allow each employee 16 hours annually for volunteer work. In addition, all employees earn a living wage.

Ricketts said their workforce is a diverse

group representing 20 different countries, and he believes their company policies don’t just promote diversity, they promote inclusion.

“The potential of diversity is unlocked by inclusion,” he said.

While programs like Ocean Wise promote sustainable fishing, B Corp goes beyond the environmental concerns – it also requires that people working for B Corp companies are treated well.

Ocean Brands rewards its suppliers if they go above and beyond what’s expected, and they have a supplier code of conduct and third party audits of their suppliers.

It’s like fair trade and Ocean Wise “all rolled up in one,” Ricketts said.

“It’s not enough to have sustainable prod-

ucts if the people on the supply chain aren’t treated fairly and equitably,” Ricketts said.

The certification process has allowed Ocean Brands become part of the “B Corp community,” Ricketts said, whereby companies learn about sustainable practises from each other. There are more than 2,800 companies certified in 60 countries.

The company has embarked on a journey and they still have a lot of work to do, Ricketts said, but they are “serious and committed” to improving how they do business.

The company’s Gold Seal brand is 100 years old this year, Ricketts said, and with their sustainability measures, they are thinking forward to the next 100 years.

“We’re trying to build something that’s bigger than ourselves,” he said.

Richmond city council’s decision to ban single-use plastics by 2020 may have been lauded by environmentalists, but not everyone is clapping their hands with joy.

Among the detractors is the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, which is questioning the timeframe for the ban to kick in.

“Most of the businesses we’ve

talked to weren’t even aware this is happening,” said Matt Pitcairn, president and CEO of the chamber.

“Some of them just ordered two years of (plastics) supply, now they only have a number of months to use these products or they’ll either need to be recycled or become garbage.”

In response to the city’s proposed ban, the chamber has launched an online survey, which will be available for a month, to encourage business owners to share their

thoughts on the impact of the ban and discuss possible alternatives.

“We aren’t presupposing the outcome of the survey; we really want to hear from businesses and understand how this could impact them — positively or negatively,” said Pitcairn.

Pitcairn stressed that the issue is not the ban, but rather the short timeframe of implementation.

A proposal to ban single-use plastic bags, plastic straws, foam cups and containers by Jan. 1, 2020 was brought forward to a city council in May.

“Businesses need time to prepare for these things. They don’t order a supply for just a few months in advance, they order 12 months or 24 months earlier instead.”

Newspaper readership no urban legend Tim Shoults GUEST SHOT

You’ve heard of urban legends, right?

Like the lady who had a spider bite that turned into a nest of eggs and hatched under her skin, or the tale of the kid that died from drinking cola after swallowing Pop Rocks.

How about this one: “Nobody reads newspapers anymore.”

Like many urban legends, everybody’s heard it, and some people assume it must be true because they’ve heard it often enough.

Well, like Pop Rocks kid and spider-egg woman, it just isn’t so.

The debunker in this case is the 2019 Newspapers 24/7 study, conducted by News Media Canada, the national organization representing more than 1,100 daily and community news media outlets across the country.

This study, the seventh annual one, was conducted in February 2019 across all provinces, in English and French and consists of 800 online interviews.

It was designed to explore how Canadians read daily and community newspaper content, on different platforms and at different times during the day.

Since the first study back in 2012, there have been shifts in reading by platform but one thing has not changed: Canadians continue to access newspaper content across all the various platforms.

In 2012, 85 per cent of Canadians reported that they read newspapers on any platform, over the course of a week and in 2019 that number has climbed to 88 per cent.

This year’s report also found that 83 per cent of newspaper readers are accessing at least some of their newspaper content online.

But that’s not replacing print readership, it’s supplementing it: the study found more than half of readers access newspaper content from both print and online

sources.

The study found that readers from all demographics use multiple platforms — print, desktop/laptop computer, phone and tablet — to access newspaper content.

Most print reading happens early in the day, while digital reading is more consistent from morning to night.

Canada, says: “Given heightened levels of global mistrust, we’re seeing a clear and continued affinity for the reliable reporting that newspapers provide.

“Newspapers continue to be the go-to source for credible, trusted and independent news, in both print and digital formats.”

And unlike an urban legend, that’s something you can rely on.

Which brings us to the other urban legend: millennials don’t read news.

The research specifically looked at the newspaper reading habits of younger Canadians, and found that 88 per cent of millennials (those born between 1982 and 1999) read newspapers weekly – the same percentage as the overall population.

The difference with this generation is how they access newspaper content – primarily through their mobile phones, and when they read – they peak early in the morning and are more consistent throughout the day, while Boomers peak in both the morning and again after dinner when reading news content.

And again, just because millennials read mostly on their phones doesn’t mean they’re not reading print as well.

Adding to the Atmosphere Championship Sunday at Hugh Boyd is electric with big crowds, the always popular north end beer garden and an assortment of food trucks.

There has been talk of adding more attractions in the near future.

For Jeff Wilson, the Nations Cup was love at first sight and the relationship is as strong as ever decades later.

“One of the things we really would like to do is more of a cultural feel with music and dance — like Indian drummers and Irish dancers. It would be a great dimension to the tournament.

As a soccer-playing youngster growing up in Richmond, Wilson was mezmorized when he took in the tournament for the very first time in the mid-1980s.

“I was coming here as an eight-or-nine-yearold watching the games. At the time, this was as good of soccer as there was in the Lower Mainland,” he recalled.

“The (NASL version of the) Whitecaps had gone away and the Vancouver 86ers hadn’t taken off yet. So this was really good soccer to me.”

Not only did Wilson eventually play in the tournament when he was 16, he got involved on the organizational side too through the encouragement of his coach and Nations Cup founder — the late Geoff Penniston.

“At the time I was helping run Richmond United at the club level and Geoff approached me because he wanted people involved with new ideas. At the time, there wasn’t even a tournament data base. They were having to phone all the teams and registrations were coming in by fax. There was no website either.”

Fast forward to today, and the Nations Cup is well-established as Western Canada’s leading summer soccer tournament with Wilson leading the organizational committee as president.

The 40th edition kicks off on Friday night with 64 teams battling for ethnic bragging rights in six different divisions. It wraps up with the championship games on Sunday at Hugh Boyd — highlight-

“In 40 years there have been lots of changes to the tournament, in the soccer community and, of course, here in Richmond as well. It’s been great to be able to keep it in its original location,” Wilson continued.

“We have gone out of our way to be pro-active with the city and they have been as helpful as we hoped they would be. We are now also using all three fields at Minoru and Manoah Steves as well. It’s one positive thing for the city as it spreads it out a bit.”

Wilson now lives in Ladner raising a young family and works downtown. Yet he makes time in his busy life to ensure the tournament in his hometown continues to thrive and evolve.

The News talked to Wilson about where the Nations Cup could be headed in the years ahead as it strives to reflect Vancouver’s ever-expanding

“We would also would like to have a better reflection with international food as well but we are a little bit bound by city policies and by-laws in regards to licensing. A reflection of the tournament in the food would be great, just increasing that multi-cultural vibe. We have at least gone from flipping burgers to bringing in food trucks.”

On the field The women’s division was launched a few years ago and has now created enough of a foundation that adding an over 30s division could be happening as soon as 2020. There is also talk of a mid-50s division for men.

More countries have been represented in recent years too.

“You look back at the early years and it was very Western and Eastern European themed.

Now there are much more Asian and East Asia countries involved. The last five or six years we have seen Saudi Arabia and Iran coming in. They have been a really nice addition to the tournament and broaden the cultural appeal.”

“We have a waiting list with usually about 12 quality teams and trickles down to 12 altogether.

We just need to make sure the teams coming in play at a level we expect. It also keeps teams already in the tournament on their toes.”

A Richmond summer tradition returns to South Arm Park this weekend.

The 34th annual Dolphin Park Classic tips-off Friday night, showcasing generations of top basketball talent from B.C. and beyond.

There is Running Rebels’ captain Steve Lee playing in his 25th tournament while 17-year-old reigning Richmond Senior Girls MVP Liz Kennedy will be making her debut in the women’s division.

Roadrunners host PoCo tonight to open playoffs The Richmond Roadrunners will open a best-of-three B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League quarter-final series against the Port Coquitlam Saints tonight (8 p.m.) at Minoru Arenas.

The Saints (11-7-0) finished fourth and the No. 5 seed Roadrunners (10-7-1) were just a single point back.
