So, we’re entering the home stretch of the federal election. While some of us political junkies have been watching the various campaigns since the writ was dropped, a good many Canadians are only tuning in now.

In fact, if our question on the street is any indication (page 4), there’s a decided lack of awareness out there. Of the five people we asked, not one could name a single candidate running in Richmond — not exactly a great reflection of electoral engagement.

That said, we also know a good many Richmondites care deeply about policies and political representation. In the last couple of weeks, there have been five all-candidate meetings that I’m aware of. Hats off to the organizations that have hosted them. It’s no small thing to manage all the logistics involved. I’ve done it before myself and the expression “herding cats” could not be more apt. Kudos, also, to the folks who have shown up to ask questions and hear the candidates debate various issues.

What I’m decidedly less impressed with is the candidates who don’t show up.

I was moderating the debate on Tuesday night hosted jointly by the Richmond Centre for Disability and the Richmond Poverty Response Committee.

Just before the debate began — when it was clear the Liberal candidate for Richmond Centre and neither of the Conservative candidates would be there — a woman came up to me at the moderator’s table. She was clearly ticked off that she had taken a night to come out and ask some pointed questions of those hoping to represent her in Ottawa but wouldn’t get the chance.

“I hope the fact some didn’t show up is reflected in the coverage,” she said to me. And, frankly, fair enough.

I understand a candidate can’t be everywhere. And sometimes things just happen. That appears to be the case with one of the NDP candidates who has had to step away from campaigning due to an illness or injury. But at least he let it be known. Simply not showing up or bowing out just hours before the debate is remarkably disrespectful.

And I will note that it’s not just one party or one debate where we’ve seen this. In fact, of the five debates mentioned earlier, I don’t think one had full attendance from those invited.

It’s also disheartening to think politicians are playing a strategic game — as in, not bothering to show up for debates if they don’t think it’s the type of audience that will vote for them anyway. I know strategy matters, but where’s the commitment to a healthy contest of ideas, the very foundation of democracy?

I’m not saying all this just to call people out or wag my finger. I’m saying it because we’ve seen a worrying trend towards apathy and disengagement when it comes to elections at all levels of government. It’s worrying because the old expression “use it or lose it” applies as much to democracy as anything else.

There’s no one solution for creating an engaged electorate, but surely showing up is a basic first step.

Don’t shame us, help us Dear Editor,

Re: “Can Striking Students Take Next Step?” Letters, Oct. 3.

Although I do not live in Richmond, Wes Fung’s letter has caught my eye as I am a high school student and the issue of global warming is close to my heart.

Wes Fung’s letter has raised some interesting points for me. The idea of looking at oneself before looking at others is a general truth that I feel we should all embrace – both young and old alike.

Wes Fung clearly has the same goal as us – to help our shared planet. However, instead of shaming teenagers based using examples that reinforce certain stereotypes, I feel it would more effective to encourage and inspire the younger generations. Of course, there will always be some people who are not mindful of their carbon footprints, but we could perhaps focus on those who are willing to change their lifestyle habits for the good of our environment.

The striking students may not have brought about actual change – but their symbolic effort should be respected and supported by adults, who are their role models.

Together – young and old – we can, should and will change the world.

Mayor naive Pro-China group should be thankful over China Dear Editor,

Re: Mayor attends China-sponsored UBCM event,” News, Sept. 26.

Mayor Brodie is incredibly naive. We do not have “lines of communication” with China. The Chinese government has absolutely no concern for human rights.

President Xi Jinping and his collaborators have one goal and only one goal in mind and that is to rule the world.

They laugh at us while they infiltrate our democracy.

I don’t expect this letter to be published as the paper will not want to “offend” the Chinese collaborators already amongst us.

More Massey mess Dear Editor, Re: “MLA, mayor at odds over Massey...” Oct. 4.

We should, by now, have a bridge under construction and a solution to our Massey parking lot in two to three years. Instead, we have three lanes that are plugged morning and night. What’s makes our leaders think that three lanes, ten years from now, will be enough with all the additional people we expect south of the Fraser?

We won’t even have a shovel in the ground by the time the approved bridge would have been operational.

Re: “Richmond clash between pro-China, pro-Hong Kong supporters,” News, Oct. 2.

It is a mockery to celebrate racial harmony in Richmond when one realizes how skin deep it is.

When I learned about the racial slur of a woman yelled against a mother and a daughter in a shopping mall parking lot, asking them to go back to their home country, I was upset.

I felt discriminated as a person from an immigrant ethnic group.

But then, some Asianlooking Mandarin-speaking thugs, because of their intolerance of different opinions, ripped off the pro-Hong Kong people’s sticky notes posted on the makeshift Lennon Wall

near Aberdeen station. I felt doubly upset. How dare you!

Ironically, in this context, I can’t agree more with that parking lot lady.

Shouldn’t you thank Canada for providing you the environment and the opportunity to express your five cent opinions, have a taste of democracy, without the threat of retaliation?

And yet, here you are, trumpling others people’s rights without a sense of shame and self awareness. How dare you!

It is Canada. Here we are, enjoying freedom of speech under the Charter. Even if you learn nothing in school, please at least take this piece of fact home when I show you the door.

Whose flag does Kenny Chiu fly?

Dear Editor, Re: “Meng arrest the ‘last straw: Chiu,” News, Oct. 3 So, Kenny Chiu, Conservative candidate for Steveston-Richmond East, is saying that he feels the Liberals have shown disrespect to China, and the arrest of Meng Wanzhou is the “last straw” for the Liberal party and Justin Trudeau.

This statement was made before extradition hearings for Meng have been finalized and/or before any kind of court proceedings in the U.S. for Wanzhou have even started.

Wanzhou’s guilt, or innocence, has yet to be proven in a court of law.

But, in the meantime, she is entitled to full protection under Canadian law and, despite her arrest, Wanzhou is able to live in one of her two luxury mansions in Vancouver.

Why come here then to support dictator?

Dear Editor, Re: “China, Hong Kong rivals clash at Aberdeen Station,” News, Oct. 3.

Who are those pro-China protesters at Aberdeen Station?

Meanwhile, Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor continue to languish in a “black jail” in China.

If they are studying here or living here as permanent residents, they should be kicked out of Canada immediately.

They are subject to interrogation, and possibly torture, despite the fact there is no evidence of wrongdoing and no due process of law.

A free democratic society like ours cannot tolerate their thuggish behaviour by tearing down the Lennon Wall. I don’t understand why they would support a dictatorship government if they choose to come here?

The arrests appear to be arbitrary, and in retaliation for Meng’s arrest in Canada.

No one is saying Hong Kong is not a part of China, but the Communist government must respect the will of people of Hong Kong.

Plus, a Canadian by the name of Huseyin Celil, born in China but of Uighur descent, who was arrested in Uzbekistan in 2006 at the request of the Chinese government, has been sentenced to approximately 32 years in a Chinese jail. His only crime appears to be that he was of Uighur descent.

When two million people are on the street protesting and petitioning, their demands cannot be denied, not in Hong Kong, or anywhere else for that matter.

Now, a piece of advice to Communist China: People of Hong Kong have been living under a democratic system for so many years, they will never accept a one-party-ruleall system.

You cannot impose a dictatorship upon a free people by violence and intimidation. The only solution is that you change and reform, and embrace democracy and basic human rights to win the hearts and minds of people of Hong Kong, and people of Taiwan for that matter. Only then, the China Dream, the unification, will happen.

So, what country is Mr. Chiu truly representing? Quite frankly, I find it mind-boggling that he thinks he represents Canadians, and has the audacity to run for public office.

She doesn’t appear to be suffering in any way, and has recently been showing up to court in Vancouver sporting four-inch stiletto heels and wearing designer dresses.

Dear Editor, Re: “Richmond needs more dog poo clean-up signs,” Letters, Oct. 3.

I am writing in response to the letter about dog owners not following the bylaw requirement to clean up the poop their dog does.

I have seen a lot of owners ignore this issue over and over.

I am an avid walker and I notice it everywhere I do my walks, from sidewalks, parks playgrounds to school grounds. I have even seen it outside business walk ways.

I totally agree with having signs posted in public places that everyone uses, the signs need to be in languages everyone can see and read.

I say all this as an immigrant from China myself.

For the second time in less than a week, pro-Hong Kong and pro-China supporters clashed at the Lennon Wall at Aberdeen Canada Line station in Richmond.

Even before the conflict, Tung had issued a warning to those threatening to tear down the wall.

Saturday’s protest came on the heels of Tuesday’s altercation at Aberdeen station, when a group of Mandarinspeaking people — apparently proChina — were caught on video tearing down a Lennon Wall put up by high school students in support of the Hong Kong protests.

Determined to rebuild the display, pro-Hong Kong demonstrators were back on Saturday pasting sticky notes to the wall with messages of support for Hong Kong. They also set up an information booth to encourage Richmondites to vote in the Oct. 21 federal election.

After Tung’s speech, pro-Hong Kong supporters waved Canadian flags and sang Glory to Hong Kong.

The Green candidate for Richmond Centre, Francoise Raunet, attended the event and said she talked with a woman apparently involved in Tuesday’s altercation at Aberdeen station.

“I said to her, in Canada, freedom of expression is really important. We can’t accept people trying to tell other people not to express their opinions.

If you have different ideas, then (put) your own poster on the wall instead of taking others’ posters down.”

“We’re in the 21st century; human democracy and freedom are things people should be fighting for,” she added.

Patient stole police car, caused mayhem

A fleeing Richmond Hospital patient stole a police cruiser before smashing into three vehicles in a bid to get away.

Just after noon on Monday, Richmond RCMP were called to the hospital after a report that a patient, who was not permitted to leave the premises, had fled on foot.

A Mountie found the man in question, but was unable to take him into custody before the suspect got into the police cruiser and drove off.

The man driving the stolen police car then collided with a civilian vehicle and an unmarked police car near Gilbert and Donald roads, just north of Blundell Road. He then collided with a second civilian vehicle on Gilbert, just south of Blundell, where he was arrested.

A photo sent to the Richmond News by local resident Bob Williamson appears to show a marked police cruiser had ultimately halted the progress of the stolen cruiser.

However, when the News asked BC RCMP for clarification, we were told that only the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) could answer the question.

“Security officers are stationed in the emergency department in Richmond Hospital. Each patient is looked at individually to determine possible safety and security risks.

The News reached out to the IIO BC, but were told that they were still trying to “determine the facts.”

“There are certain security protocols that can be used, such as using restraints if a patient is considered an elopement risk or a threat to their own or someone’s safety.”

The driver of the second civilian vehicle, a woman, was taken to hospital with what are believed to be serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

One RCMP officer was injured and is being treated for what are understood to be minor injuries.

Because police vehicles were involved in the incident, the RCMP has called in the IIO BC to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the woman’s injuries.

The News asked Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), which operates Richmond Hospital, what level of security the patient

was subject to at the time he left the hospital.

It’s not clear whether VCH is reviewing its security protocols following Monday’s incident.

A spokesperson for VCH declined to comment, citing privacy concerns.

“Patient safety is our highest priority and we regret any anxiety this incident may have caused anyone,” the statement read.

“We commend our staff, security officers, and Richmond RCMP for working quickly to protect patients.”

Richmond’s mayor and RichmondQueensborough MLA both say that the decision to replace the George Massey Tunnel was a long time coming — but their agreement on the subject ends there.

Last week, a Metro Vancouver mayors task force voted in favour of an eight-lane immersed tube tunnel — with two of those lanes dedicated to transit — to replace the 60-year-old tunnel opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959.

Only Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Ken Baird voted against it, citing concerns about the impact on salmon and the environment.

But Baird’s concerns are shared

by Liberal MLA Jas Johal, who said there’s not enough information in the new tunnel’s recommendation.

“There are huge environmental concerns in regards to dredging and the environmental assessment that will be required,” said Johal.

“We are going to put a significant amount of material in the river. We didn’t know much better 60 years ago, but we should know better now,”

he added.

According to a provincial report, an immersed-tube tunnel will create the largest disruption during construction.

But that environmental impact will be short-term, according to Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, adding research shows the tunnel will have less environmental impact than the BC Liberals’ previously proposed 10-lane bridge.

“Yes, we have to listen to (the environmental assessment) and be environmentally concerned. But those concerns can be addressed,” said Brodie, adding that he believes everyone would want to do what they can to minimize the tunnel’s environmental impact during construction.

One of the other options that the task force considered was a deep-bored tunnel, but according to the provincial report, that would have impacted up to 200 acres in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). That’s one of the reasons why the task force didn’t consider it feasible, said Brodie.

Although he doesn’t know how much the ALR will be affected by the immersed-tube tunnel.

“There will be some impacts to the ALR, but (the province) is doing everything they can to minimize that,” said Brodie.

Johal is also frustrated that the entire process to replace the tunnel is starting all over again, adding that he thought the decision had more to do with politics than improving transportation.

While the province hasn’t confirmed a completion date, the earliest commuters could see the new tunnel is 2028, which gives three years for an environmental assessment and five years for construction, according to the province’s report.

“The reality is that we had a shovelready project,” said Johal, adding that he’s concerned about what the decision means with respect to moving goods and services throughout the region.

“Year after year, we’re expecting about a half a million people, more than half a million people, to move to the Lower Mainland up to 2030,” said Johal.

“Some of them are going to be living around here. So I’m very much concerned about the congestion and what it means for this reason.”

And with the bridge, said Johal, there were plans to accommodate a future SkyTrain expansion across the river — something that the new tunnel doesn’t address.

“They lost opportunities with a tunnel,” said Johal.

This and other green initiatives have earned them the title of “Greenest School in Canada,” an honour bestowed on them by the Canada Green Building Council.

The school also won an award from Staples last year for their environmental initiatives worth $20,000.

The list of green initiatives at the school is impressive: they’ve reduced their garbage by 80 per cent and do regular garbage audits, they grow fruits and vegetables in school gardens, they’ve replaced their vending machine with refillable water coolers and they compost with worms.

Furthermore, they recycle their

hand paper towels, they’ve reduced their battery usage and use refillable markers and they’ve closed off the driver’s loop where kids were dropped off and picked up to encourage walking and cy-

He has been working with the students on green initiatives for 14 of the past 18 years.

But even the four years he was working at the district level, a lot of the institutional changes he and his students had made stuck during that time.

But having “caring” as the schools motto and embedded into the school’s DNA is part of the formula.

“Caring about self, others and the environment is what we do,” Lyseng said.

He left Communist China because he did not want his children to grow up in a world where they cannot speak their minds without any fear.

In 2018, the Liberal government denied summer job funding to organizations, including charities, which would not sign an attestation supporting abortion.

It also passed bill C-16 as part of a trend to force Canadians to express support for the existence of various gender identities beyond the biological categories of male and female, and to use pronouns demanded by those who identify with these other genders.

In addition to these assaults on conscience, the government launched a series of regulatory attacks on free speech on the Internet and is pressuring social media companies, which are already censoring speech that isn’t politically correct, to crack down more.

It is also considering bringing back Section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act. This hate speech provision was repealed by the Conservative government in 2013 because it was being used arbitrarily to censor statements that offended some people on the internet.

The rights of Canadians to freely hold and express beliefs are being eroded at an alarming speed under the current government.

The rights and liberties of Canadians cannot be taken for granted. Our traditions of free speech and due process cannot survive without individuals who are willing to defend them.

When one man is enslaved, all are not free.

To solve these problems, Zhe believes Richmond needs a representative who understands both Western philosophy and Chinese philosophy, who can make dialogues and build communications between Chinese culture and Western culture, and this person should be a non-partisan problem solver.

Students at Diefenbaker elementary got a quick lesson in political rhetoric at a Student Vote all-candidates forum on Monday.

The Western world, according to Zhe, should give China the opportunity to create new ideology and a better system. If democracy in Canada wants to move forward, he believes Canada also needs to absorb new ingredients from other cultures, including the Chinese culture.

When a student asked Ivan Pak — who is running in the federal election for the People’s Party of Canada (PPC) — on his party’s stand on refugees, the response from the candidate was that there is “misinformation” about the party’s stand.

“Get the facts straight — that’s my response,” he said.

Democratic construction in Richmond is another side of the coin of culture issues, says Zhe. Too many voters, he said, cast their ballots by other people’s guidance, will or manipulation.

The student explained that his family came as refugees from Vietnam, and if the PPC’s policies of closing “open borders” had been in place, his mother might have died in their home country.

The newcomers, added Zhe, lack the knowledge of Canada’s politics, history and values. Richmond needs a representative to help newcomers integrate into society.

Pak said the PPC welcomes real refugees, but not illegal ones. He added that economic immigrants are important for Canada.

solve the climate crisis, whether universities should be free and Indigenous issues.

Brandon Sekhon said, if he could vote, he would probably lean toward the Greens, but Alice Wong, who has been the member of Parliament for Richmond Centre for 11 years, would make a “pretty good second choice.”

Brandon was most impressed by the Green party’s Francoise Raunet because her explanations were clear.

“I could really understand how their platform was going to work for post-secondary funding,” he said.

When questioned how the Green party would afford to offer free tuition at post-secondary schools, Raunet said, like elementary schools, all education should be free. Currently, private companies are getting subsidies, causing pollution. The Green party would eliminate fossilfuel subsidies and close tax loopholes, thereby raising money for things like free tuition.

When asked what he thought about Trudeau’s brown face when he was a teacher in Vancouver, Kou, who’s running as a Liberal in Richmond Centre, defended the prime minister, saying he apologized “sincerely.”

“I accept the prime minister’s apology,” Kou told the gymful of students at Diefenbaker.

“Now we are completely focused on growth and consumption (…) we need to actually shift to thinking about well-being and making that one of the central measures of our economic success,” Raunet said.

Dogs can bring companionship to isolated seniors, but whether they should be depended on as a solution to loneliness was questioned at last Thursday’s all-candidates meeting focusing on seniors, hosted by CARP, formerly the Canadian Association of Retired Persons.

Conservative candidate for Steveston-Richmond East, Kenny Chiu, said having a dog or volunteering with dog societies can help seniors feel less isolated, to which Liberal candidate Joe Peschisolido responded that this election is not “about pets.”

“I think this issue (of seniors’ isolation) needs more than government to solve,” Chiu said.

Chiu told the audience at South Arm United Church that his mother lives with him part of the year and their family makes it a priority to sit around the dinner table with his two daughters, to discuss what is going on in their lives. Part of the family unit is their dog Nugget, loved by his elderly mother.

“I think these are the organic ways that we need to grow our society,” Chiu said, adding that organizations like the Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) can help low-income seniors take care of their pets with their low-cost veterinary care.

Peschisolido said, while dogs and family are important and people are “blessed” if they have a support system, “the role of government is to be there to help if you

don’t have that.”

According to Statistics Canada, 1.4 million Canadian seniors report feeling lonely, and the physical impact of loneliness is equivalent to smoking 28 cigarettes per day and can increase the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.

Green candidate Francoise Raunet said a social safety net is needed to help seniors. She added that public institutions like community centres should be well-funded

Alice Wong, running for the Conservatives in Richmond Centre, said having support for seniors is important. She pointed out the Conservative government under Stephen Harper increased funding for programs like New Horizons.

But, she added, seniors should be encouraged to volunteer whereby those who are still capable can help those who need more.

“We have two types of seniors – those seniors who can help and those seniors who need help,” Wong said, adding that government should make sure “those who need the most get the most.”

The forum focused on several other topics, prepared by CARP, including safeguarding pensions, universal pharmacare, long-term care, federal funding for health care and seniors housing.

There will be four advance voting days centred around the Thanksgiving Day weekend — on Friday, Oct. 11, Saturday, Oct. 12, Sunday, Oct. 13 and Monday, Oct. 14.

Polling stations are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and voters need to go to their assigned polling station.

At elections.ca, voters can type in their postal code into the “Voter Information Service” to find which polling station to go to.

Voters must either show one piece of government identification or two other pieces of identification, for example, voter information card and a bank statement or a utility bill and a student id card. Those who don’t have identification can ask another voter to vouch for them.

There was no disagreement around the table — the Earth is heating up and solutions are needed urgently.

Four federal candidates were tripping over each other last week to express the urgency of the climate crisis, but, when it came to action, the Liberals advocated a less urgent response — focusing on the carbon tax and defending the purchase of the Trans Mountain Pipeline. Meanwhile the Greens and NDP were willing to put more radical solutions on the table.

The Liberals have been heavily criticized in this election for buying the Trans Mountain Pipeline last year for $4.5 billion, but Steven Kou, Richmond Centre candidate, defended this move at the 100 Debates on the Environment at RC Palmer Secondary.

(Neither of the Conservative candidates attended the debate and the People’s Party of Canada was not invited.)

Kou said Canada is in a “transition” from fossil fuels, but currently, the country needs “better access to global markets.”

“Every dollar we earn from the Trans Mountain pipeline, we will reinvest in the new clean energy industry,” he said.

but currently, they want to “change behaviour” by putting a price on pollution — the carbon tax which the Conservatives have vowed to scrap if elected.

Economists who study behaviour change say the most effective way to reduce emissions is a carbon tax, Andrew Frank, instructor with KPU’s Environmental Protection Program told the Richmond News, because it incentivizes people to use lower forms of carbon.

“It’s the most transparent way to do it — it’s the most effective way to do it,” Frank said.

While the Conservatives are promising to put caps and fees on large emitters, when a tax hits the pocketbooks of the consumer, they are more likely to change their behaviour, Frank said.

The Green Party is opposed to any new fossil-fuel infrastructure anywhere, said the candidate for Richmond Centre, Francoise Raunet.

“Basically, fossil-fuel industries are a thing of the past,” she said, adding there’s a need to reinvest in new, green technology.

“It doesn’t make sense for us to continue to invest in a dying economy.”

Jaeden Dela Torre, running for the NDP in Steveston-Richmond East, spoke against the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, saying it is a “safety hazard” and that there

is no insurance policy in case something went wrong, and said an NDP government would end fossil-fuel subsidies.

Dela Torre, who is 18 years old, said his generation is becoming “desensitized” to climate change issues, but he sees the future as unsustainable, with the “world crumbling” like in a “bad sci-fi film.”

“I’m only in it (politics) because I want to make sure (…) there’s a planet for my generation,” he said.

The Liberal plan is to gradually reduce subsidies for fossil fuel companies, said Kou,

But Raunet said science is saying “we don’t have much time to waste.” Her party is advocating changing the entire economic model in Canada to be more sustainable and slow down climate change.

“The next government is the government that needs to get it done,” she said.

The People’s Party of Canada’s (PPC) platform states that it’s an “undisputed fact” that the climate has always changed and that there is no scientific consensus that carbon dioxide produced by humans is causing global warming.

A crowd-funding page has been kicked off to help raise funds to support a young Richmond man, who has been rendered a quadriplegic after a car accident.

Just over five weeks ago, 20 year-old Adam Mogg was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital following a serious car accident.

His extensive injuries has left him quadriplegic, with a long road of rehabilitation ahead.

According to family friend Debbie Bielech, who started the gofundme page, Mogg is someone that “we love and cherish.”

“An aspiring actor. Beloved friend. Supportive son. Talented fastball player. His spirit is bright and resilient,” she wrote.

“While he may feel emotionally and physically broken, his community can see the

light in these cracks. We believe love will heal.”

Mogg’s mother, Sherrie, added Bielech, is a “symbol of courage. Being a single mom on disability, Adam has supported his mother through her own struggles. Now, she is asking for the community’s help. By donating to Adam, Sherrie will be relieved from some financial pressures and be able to constantly be by her son’s side.”

Bielech hopes donations to the campaign will give Mogg the “chance to live his best life- psychologically, emotionally, and physically. These funds will help to pay for medical and mental needs, including: an accessible van and new housing, lifts, equipment, caregivers and respite workers, medical supplies not covered by the government, and much more.”

Words of encouragement and support, as well as donations, have been pouring into the page, which so far has raised $26,329 of its $250,000 target.

Newspaper carriers are vital in connecting newspaper production to the community and they deserve recognition this week in celebration of Carrier Appreciation Day on Oct. 12.

One of these carriers is seven-year-old Ethan Croft, who has been a newspaper carrier for the Richmond News for the past year and has taken up a second route to show how important this job is for him.

Meeting new people every day is one of two things that drive his motivation to perfect his job of delivering the newspaper to everyone in his neighbourhood – second being that paycheque to buy his favourite things.

Croft is working hard towards a new LEGO set with the money he is saving up.

The job as a carrier is challenging to him especially when he had to learn his new route, Croft said.

Jennifer Croft, Ethan’s mother, said that they worked together learning the new routes and taking their time to familiarize with the new route.

She is very proud to see him being responsible and taking his job seriously by mak-

When Ethan isn’t out and about delivering the news to his neighbours, he is working hard towards his yellow belt in taekwondo or playing video games during his down time.

Growing up, he wants to meet more people and see more locations with a specific career in mind.

Ethan officially started his carrier job when he filled in for one of his neighbours when they were on holidays, said Jennifer Croft, his mother.

“It’s hard work, but he enjoys doing it,” said Jennifer, adding that even though one of his routes has 105 papers to deliver, he does it without complaint.

The mother-son duo often looks forward to prize draws for newspaper carriers.

Prize draws often include tickets to see baseball or football games, is how the Crofts got to experience their first BC Lions game.

Ethan encourages other kids to become a carrier because it’s not just about earning money for what you want to buy, but a way for “other kids learn to be responsible.”

A Richmond resident will be celebrating his eighth year as a newspaper carrier on Carrier Appreciation Day on Oct. 12.

Teaghan Collins started off his job as a carrier for the Richmond Review before switching over to the News when the Review stopped publishing.

He accepted the role of a newspaper carrier when his brother passed it on to a friend, who in turn handed the job to him in 2011.

Since then, he has been delivering the news to the community – a total of eight years and counting.

The 23-year-old enjoys his job because he is able to count in the exercise he gets each week and looks forward to seeing his neighbours and their pets during his stops. “(Being a carrier) means that I have a job and I get a paycheque to save up for my trips to Disneyland,” said Collins, adding that meeting people he delivers to motivates him every week.

The most difficult part of the job is to battle the combination of wet and windy weather, which Richmond is starting to see, he added. “(I) was nervous, to be sure, for me to have him out and about without someone

They would do the route together in the beginning while adding an introduction page with their first delivery to let all the homes know he is the new carrier in the area.

The both of them wanted to let neighbours know and understand that because of Teaghan’s autism, he might not want to make eye contact, but that he still wants to say hi to everyone during his route.

“He is well-loved by everyone he delivers to,” Pam added.

After Teaghan became comfortable with his route and had met all his neighbours, Pam felt reassured to let him do the route independently. Teaghan does his route with excitement and dedication each week, which allows him to achieve a great sense of independence, belonging and community according to his mother.

The girls not only came through hockey together, spending a number of years playing boys rep level at

Seafair, but also attended Steveston-London.

They helped the Sharks basketball team win the provincial Grade 9 title in 2018.

While Chan moved on to B.C. Midget AAA League with Fraser Valley before heading to DHA and South Delta Secondary for her Grade 10 year, Wong stayed put with the Ravens.

She is the only player on the Team B.C. roster that does not play at an academy or in the Midget AAA League. It’s an encouraging sign that it doesn’t necessarily take a lot of time and money to reach the highest level.

The Richmond pair were among 20 players named to Team B.C. that will be heading to Manitoba in November for the 2019 National Women’s U18 Hockey Championships. The roster was finalized following an extensive selection process that included a week-long provincial camp at Shawnigan Lake back in July and a four-day final camp 10 days ago at UBC. Chan is playing on Team B.C. for the third consecutive year, having helped her province win bronze at the Canada Winter Games last March and at the 2017 nationals as well. She was named one of the team’s assistant captains this week.

SCHUBERG, Hazel Mary Hazel was born April 25, 1924 in Saskatoon, SK. Though she spent most of her years in Richmond and Courtenay, she was a Prairie girl at heart. She is survived by her “older” sister Eileen Morrow.

Mom always wanted to let you know she was the younger sister. She was predeceased by her husband “Al” after 64 years of marriage. Mom left quite a legacy with her family - her daughters Thea Richardson (husband Ken) and Karen Bayer (husband Jerry) and the grandkids Erin (great grandkids Malinka and Wilhelm), Michelle (great grandkids Parker and Ada), Christopher and Myles.

She had a life-long love of flowers and all that she found aesthetically pleasing.

Manners and appearances were paramount - just ask the grandkids. She was an amazing cook and baker and distributed muffins to anyone in crisis. We will miss this firecracker - may she be happy wherever she is with her lipstick on and her purse in hand.

A special thanks to the staff at Oceanview at The Views, whose kindness and compassion have been amazing over these last few months.
