Last week we ran a story in which our publisher talked about his vision for the paper in 2020. When we posted the story on our Facebook page we posed the question: What would you like to see more or less of in the Richmond News in 2020?

We got back a lot of great answers, many of which we are looking for ways to implement. Here’s one example.

“More coverage of local issues that are being discussed in the non-English speaking community, especially through media publishing and broadcasting in languages other than English. As a unilingual person in a community where many other languages are the daily languages of large numbers of people, I would like to hear other voices.”

This is a great point and something I’ve thought a lot about myself.

A few years back, the issue of Chinese-only signs was huge, at least it was in the Richmond News. I could almost fill the entire paper with letters to the editor complaining about the unilingual signs. The trouble was, although many of our readers made thoughtful and insightful arguments, the debate was seriously imbalanced. While the occasional letter opposed implementing a bylaw for fear of ushering in the “language police,” I don’t recall a single letter that actually defended the practice. It was only when we went around to a few of these businesses (with an interpreter) did we learn some of the rationales for Chinese-only signs. Agree with them or not, there were legitimate business reasons. For example, if you have a bilingual sign, you need bilingual staff and bilingual product information — all significant investments for what may be very little return.

But while we could do a story that, we hoped, would help create some balance, I thought even better would be a venue where there was an actual conversation between communities. So, I talked to the editors of the two Chinese dailies based in Richmond and asked them about exchanging letters.

They could see what our readers were saying and we could see what their readers were saying (in translation, of course).

Unfortunately, those papers don’t run letters. So I talked about exchanging editor’s columns, but that didn’t work either. My next idea was to find a columnist who could reflect some of the perceptions from the Chinese community, but then we ran the risk of tokenism or expecting one person to speak for a large, diverse group.

What we have now is a couple of Chinese-speaking journalists who help us reach into that community to bring us those stories. But after reading the above Facebook comment, we’ve come up with another idea – a Chinese news roundup. The reporters will keep track of what’s making news in the Chinese media and on WeChat (they already do that anyway) then summarize the top stories for our readers. Watch for that feature in upcoming issues.

That’s just one of a number of great ideas that was posted on our Facebook page. There are others we will also be implementing but I don’t have space to talk about here. Point being, we’re listening. We can’t please everyone all the time — and, believe me, we don’t — but we do take seriously good ideas and thoughtful feedback.

New ideas ‘refreshing’ Accessible playgrounds Dear Editor,

Re: “Activists have taken over city,” Letters, Jan. In response to Lynn Davies, it’s refreshing for people with new, innovative ideas and visions who seek change and improved ways of doing things to step up (“take over”).

Better than the stale, same-old, go-with-the-flow status quo mentality. Besides, these people are voted in fair and square and represent others’ shared views, not just their own. They are supported by people who agree with their platforms.

The suggestion that someone is “taking over” means someone feels a sense of ownership and that’s just wrong. You can’t take over in a system that’s decided through votes without having people in support of the ideas.

I don’t like city spending that isn’t absolutely necessary any more than the next person (see: lawn bowling exclusive clubhouse), but this is much needed!

Not only will this help to address speeding, which is a huge issue on Steveston Highway, but

it will provide a much needed route for cyclists wanting to have safe options to leaving the car at home.

Those in my neck of the woods who want to go to Ironwood Mall by bicycle are currently forced to use No. 3 Road south toward the dike — a treacherous ride with little to no shoulder south of Steveston Highway, often having to contend with speeding vehicles.

Riders already ride far too fast at times on these shared paths — no need to further facilitate that by turning greenways into freeways.

Recently, I’ve decided not to ride, as it’s simply proving to be too dangerous with the increased traffic flow. The other option is Williams Road, however, the same dangers are faced when reaching No. 5 Road.

So, this is a much-needed plan as we seek to become more aware of our choices and try to have a positive impact by becoming greener. The vision of Richmond in encouraging growth has been to support people getting out of their cars and using alternatives.

The person suggesting that the money better be spent on upgrades to other routes has mentioned off-road trails, which

These paths are situated in areas where there is wildlife to consider and some of us prefer to see them kept “as is” in a more natural setting that remains relatively undisturbed.

Adding bike routes to the flow of traffic provides a safe alternative for those who wish to bike to destination points without enduring the hazards of speeding traffic. Many now use the sidewalks for fear of being hit and we need to address this.

I am all in favour of this bike path and will swap out my car for a bike in order to get to work each day if this goes through.

I feel that we should be thankful for activists —not critical of them.

In November, Grauer Elementary on Blundell Road received a new accessible playground, designed to be an inclusive space for all children.

In 2015, an accessible playground was built at McNeely Elementary on Woodhead Road. This $230,000 project includes multiple wheelchair access points and built-in toys.

Hospital parking unfair

However, it is difficult to find information on inclusive spaces in Richmond, even if you know where they are.

Perhaps the city and school district or some other organization could host a few searchable web pages with the names and addresses of these play spaces, plus photos, maps and parking information.

Rentals needed Dear Editor,

Re: “Activist pushes for city centre rental,” News, Dec. 26 I read with interest the Dec. 26 article about John Roston and how he would like to see all of the Lansdowne mall redevelopment become rental housing. I believe there is a lot of merit in his proposal.

Increasing the stock of purpose-built rental housing would be of great benefit to the community. This type of stock exists expressly to be rented out. In contrast, condo developments allow private owners to let units stay empty if they choose. Many strata bylaws also limit the number of rentals.

As Mr. Roston states, investors across North America are snapping up large purpose-built rental projects because of the guaranteed long-term rental income. Low interest rates, high rents and low vacancy

rates all make for a good opportunity to invest in rental housing. If units are built to rent, they will be rented.

According to the Metro Vancouver Housing Data Book 2019 (available online) there are 18,918 renter households in Richmond or about nine per cent of all residents. The median income for Richmond renters is about $49,000 per year so an affordable rent is about $1,225 per month (30 per cent of income).

Combine this with a rental vacancy rate of 0.7 per cent, and there is not much choice for Richmond residents in this income range.

Among earners in this range are people who provide necessary services in our hospital and care homes and in fire, safety and emergency professions.

Additional information in the Data Book states Richmond has an average of 1,995 housing starts per year, but only 222 are

purpose-built rental. Most of these are secondary suites and market rental and only 129 units of social housing were built in the last five years.

Disjointed bike system could use cash infusion Dear Editor,

There is also a dearth of below-market rentals for the income earners described above. Unless incomes rise dramatically in the short term, Richmond needs to allow a large influx of purpose-built rental housing to accommodate people who live, work and play here.

I am not an activist. I am not a member of HUB. I am simply a Richmond taxpayer who would appreciate a safer means to ride my bike.

I would challenge city councillors to be brave and zone the Lansdowne site to rental tenure zoning and invite developers to build a mix of affordable, below market and market rentals at Lansdowne. A public hearing on rezoning will be coming to council in the spring. I encourage readers who care about housing to let council know how you feel.

Then only a few metres over there is a bike path on Railway itself. The next northsouth bike path is not for several kilometres away, along Garden City.

The latest enhancements to our CPP

Statistics suggest that with the rising population of elder Canadians, and the government’s recent concern over a lack of savings in this segment of our society, some further enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan were needed. Mr. James Burton wrote an online article last week summarizing them. Here goes. Canadians’ contributions (including employers) into the plan are now rising. Meanwhile, CPP survivor benefits, received by a surviving spouse, will widen. A person who loses their spouse at an age as young as 35 will now receive some benefits. In addition, there is an automatic enrolment in place for persons who defer to age 70, collecting their CPP. There is also some discussion (it may be presented in the coming Federal budget) of a CPP benefit increase to persons who reach age 75. While CPP is technically supposed to replace about 25% of a retired person’s income, these moves are apparently aiming to increase that to 33%. You may wish to speak with an Accountant to determine how it all might affect you.

While the City of Vancouver may have an overabundance of bike routes, Richmond is woefully underserved by a rambling, disjointed and illogical system. For example, there is the bike path on the greenway along Railway.

at No. 2 Road and Westminster. There is no easy or safe route to access or exit that route.

There is a lovely new bike route along the southern part of No. 2 Road, but it, too, abruptly ends at Steveston Highway.

Another problem is that many bike lanes are actually no more than the shoulder of the road, with no real extra space or safety provided to cyclists.

I note that one letter writer was corrected by the editor when she complained the city was going to spend $10M on bike lanes in the city budget (its actually just under $8M). Frankly, I would welcome the city spending $10M on improving the bike lanes of Richmond.

A woman had to be rescued from her flipped car after she was T-boned during Friday morning’s snowy commute.

Fire closes No.1 Road

Her car flipped onto its side this morning, around 8:30 a.m., on Railway Avenue, close to Colbeck Road, just south of Blundell Road.

In dash-cam footage submitted by Ang — who was driving north along Railway Avenue with his wife Joyce — a white van turning left from Colbeck Road collided with the black car, which was heading south, causing the black car to flip onto its side.

“I had to open the back (trunk) door for her to get out. I wasn’t able to open the side door for her so she had to crawl out through the back door,” Ang told the Richmond News.

“It was scary, I’m still shaking.”

A section of No. 1 Road in Richmond was blocked off Tuesday afternoon as firefighters dealt with a large house fire.

Smoke began billowing from the property, between Blundell and Francis roads, at around midday, according to local resident Arnold Cheng.

By 2:20 p.m., Cheng said the fire was still going and the roof had just collapsed.

A spokesperson for the City of Richmond told the Richmond News at 2:15 p.m. that the section in the 8000-block of No. 1 Road would be closed for a while longer.

There were no reported injuries from the fire, according to the city, and an investigation will take place as to the cause.

Cheng told the News that the property in flames was the same one where an explosive device detonated Jan. 31, 2018.

At the time, Richmond RCMP told the News that the damage to the property was “consistent with the detonation of an improvised explosive device.”

Email glitches at News The Richmond News started off the New Year quiet, but perhaps it was a little too quiet for the distribution team.

The joy of a snow day for Richmond students was counter-balanced with treacherous driving conditions in the city and around the region and cancelled flights at YVR. Thirteen trucks and a fleet of pickup trucks with plows worked throughout the night and day in Richmond to keep roads clear, digging into the city’s $1.1 million snow removal budget.

They found out emails directed at them were being quarantined with some not being received at all, explained Kristene Murray, Richmond News’ distribution manager.

Despite a suggestion from a former Vancouver city councillor on CBC that there should be a regional approach to snow removal, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie thinks that each city has its own priorities and snow removal in Richmond wouldn’t improve if it were done regionally.

“We apologize to anyone who has emailed us and didn’t get a reply,” said Murray.

For example, municipalities that have a lot of hills might be prioritized over Richmond’s roads, he said.

Brodie added that a city setting its own priorities “would be no worse, and possibly significantly better than if we went with a regional approach.”

The IT department has been contacted and hopes to fix the problem as soon as possible.

The average high for Jan. 15 is historically six degrees Celsius, but, on Wednesday, the mercury got down to -6 degrees.

The snow is expected to be short-lived as a mix of snow and rain is forecast for Thursday turning to showers for the weekend.

A Richmond man has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his cousin at a wedding reception almost three years ago.

Sanghera appeared at the BC Supreme Court in Vancouver on Monday, where his trial was due to start.

Before he was found dead by wedding guests, Dulay had been involved in a physical altercation, according to a Vancouver Police Department (VPD) report at the time.

A man accused of impaired and dangerous driving that claimed the life of a woman five years ago is set to go on trial in Richmond later this month.

Christopher Dennis MacDonald, 29, has been charged on six counts relating to the July 4, 2015 accident, including dangerous driving; driving above the legal blood alcohol level; and causing bodily harm and death, according to court documents.

Raccoons ‘running riot’ ing people.

Trapped between the BC Wildlife Act and “gangs” of hungry raccoons, residents in a small Richmond sub-division are at a loss how to protect their pets.

The Sea Island community of Burkeville, it seems, is being terrorized by a growing number of apparently larger than normal and aggressive raccoons.

Despite the creature’s reputation as being nocturnal, pets are routinely attacked during the day, people are scared to let their kids play in their backyards and adults take evasive action when walking home at night.

There are also stories of raccoons getting trapped underneath people’s houses and ripping shingles off their roofs.

However, as they are protected by the BC Wildlife Act, municipalities, including Richmond, are relatively powerless to deal with the critters.

And, due to the same regulations, the provincial government’s BC Conservation Officer Service is unable to get involved, unless the raccoons are attack-

“This is a big problem. Last Wednesday, the dogs were out on the deck there for their nighttime pee. They didn’t even leave the patio,” recalled Taylor, who has lived in Burkeville for 14 years.

“I could hear them making a horrible noise. I realized something was wrong.

Murphy (a one-year-old Yorkie/Maltese) was trying to get in through the cat door and was pulled back by the raccoons.

“When I opened the door, Tazmo (a five-year-old schitzu Yorkie) was in the clutches of one of the four raccoons.

They had them trapped out there.”

Taylor said Padme, her 12-year-old mini Australian sheepdog, got the worst.

“Padme had blood everywhere. I managed to get them in. The floor was covered in blood.”

Thankfully, the dogs had relatively minor injuries and the vet bill only came to around $800.

However, Taylor has learned, through the community’s Facebook page, that

dozens of other residents in the small community had similar experiences.

Her roommate, Shane Alexander, who’s not exactly diminutive at around six foot, three inches tall, said even he has to give the raccoons a wide berth.

“I walk home at night down the back alley there. They will follow me or block me off,” Alexander said.

Barbara Rowland and Norman Hopkins, who’ve lived in Burkeville since 1985, said their current dog, Lola, has been chased around their garden by raccoons. And their previous dog, which was actually a raccoon hound, got chased — by the raccoons.

Sgt. Don Stahl, of the BC Conservation Officer Service, told the Richmond News that raccoons are considered wildlife and are protected.

Stahl, however, added that, under the law, people can “live trap” raccoons without a licence or permit.

“They can go to hardware store, get a live trap, or call a humane pest control service. If they trap a raccoon, they can only be kept for 24 hours, then they can be released, within 10 kilometres.”

Facial reconstruction could identify dead men One, a white male aged 30 to 50, was found on the north shore of the Fraser River on July 8, 2004.

The BC Coroner’s Service is hoping to identify the remains of two men found in Richmond — by putting a face on 3D-printed copies of their skulls.

The coroner’s service has partnered with the RCMP and the New York Academy of Art to recreate the faces of 14 unidentified men, which are part of the B.C.’s open cold case investigations, dating from 1972 to 2019.

An additional skull came from the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.

Two of the unidentified men were found in Richmond.

According to the coroner’s service, he had good dental work and a gold tooth in his lower left jaw. It’s estimated he died in 2003 or early 2004. He had short brown, wavy hair, medium build, weighed 115 pounds and was six feet tall.

The second man, an Indigenous male aged 45 to 55, was found floating in the Fraser River near the eastern end of Dyke Road on June 8, 2008.

He suffered from severe coronary artery disease and likely died a few months to one year before the discovery of his body, according to the coroner’s service.

While investigators use a variety of methods to identify a person once human remains are found — for example, searching dental records, sending samples for DNA testing or comparing the remains to reports of missing people — they may turn to more creative methods if traditional approaches prove unsuccessful, according to the coroners service.

The remains of both men were found in Richmond. Their faces were reconstructed as part of a new project. Photo submitted dentures, which were badly worn. He had a medium build and was five-foot-eight to fivefoot-nine inches tall.

According to the coroners service, the people could be from anywhere.

“This partnership is a unique opportunity to try to draw new breath into otherwise stalled investigations,” said Eric Petit, director of the BC Coroner’s Service special investigations.

“Our hope is that these reconstructions will trigger a memory that results in someone connecting with us or the RCMP.” The skulls were recreated with 3D printing in Ottawa in batches of four, with each batch taking approximately 48 hours to complete.

“We can pretty much call the shots because so many people want to build here,” Day said.

With a “critical” housing situation, Richmond council is pushing for even more affordable housing.

She said she’d like to see one-fifth of units dedicated as affordable housing in new developments.

In December, the planning committee asked staff to bring back ideas on expanding beyond the city’s current requirement for 10 per cent affordable housing in new developments.

“I’d like to look at 20 per cent – if that’s doable, I’d be very happy,” she said.

Couns. Carol Day, Bill McNulty and Harold Steves carried the vote at the committee level, with Couns. Linda McPhail and Alexa Loo voting in opposition.

Day said that she doesn’t want to “kill the real estate market,” but she thinks it can tolerate more affordable housing.

“When it’s this lucrative, why not?” she told the Richmond News.

ALR properties denied Richmond city council didn’t support the removal of three properties from the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) despite last-minute appeals from the applicants.

The applicants argued the decision should lie with the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), the experts in the area, whether the properties at 14540, 14680 and 14920 Burrows Rd. should have their farming designation removed.

The proponent for the applicants, Colin Fry, told council on Monday the owners have “legitimate issues” to discuss with the ALC regarding farming. He asked council to forward it to the ALC for that discussion, either with their endorsement or not, to “put these matters to bed once and for all.”

“What we’re trying to do is home in on the agricultural arguments, not what the land can be used for later,” Fry said.

An application to take land out of the ALR first goes through the city, and city council decides whether or not to forward it to the ALC.

The ALC then makes the final decision whether it can be pulled out.

City staff didn’t recommend forwarding the application to the ALC because the properties are designated for farming both municipally and by Metro Vancouver and because the application doesn’t propose any net benefit to agriculture.

The staff report also notes that properties could be actively farmed if the land was improved, for example, if there were better drainage, it would improve the quality of the soil.

The son-in-law of one of the property owners, Rob Ast, told council he was “dumbfounded” by the process of their application, saying no one discussed the details or merits of the proposal at a recent planning meeting, compared to the Agricultural Advisory Committee meeting where he felt their concerns were heard.

Lands, fishing rights disputed

Nearly 200 years ago, before Richmond existed, an Indigenous settlement containing more than 108 longhouses sat along the south arm of the Fraser River, according to the Cowichan Nation Alliance (CNA).

The CNA — which is based around the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island — has since laid claim to roughly 780 acres of publicly held land near Triangle Beach, now at the centre of an ongoing B.C. Supreme Court case.

This area, according to court documents, made up a portion of the approximately 1,846 acres of traditional village and surrounding land along the river’s south arm known as the Lands of Tl’uqtinus — and was “exclusively occupied” by the Cowichan, including when Canada issued grants for those lands.

Other court records state both Richmond and Canada deny this.

The CNA — made up of the Cowichan Tribes, Stz’uminus First Nation, Halalt First Nation and Penelakut Tribe — is also seeking the right to fish the south arm of the Fraser River for food.

The Lyackson First Nation, which is also a member of the CNA, support the case but is not a plaintiff.

The case, which was initiated in March 2014 against Canada, B.C. and the City of Richmond, is now entering month five of a trial that is expected to run throughout the year, according to David Robbins, one of the lawyers representing the CNA. The court case is taking place in Victoria.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, along with Musqueam Indian Band and Tsawwassen First Nation — which both have rights to fish the south arm of the Fraser River — have also been named as defendants.

According to the Cowichan Tribes, which

has more than 5,000 members and is the province’s largest First Nations community, their traditional territory spanned over 370,000 hectares, ranging from Vancouver Island to the south arm of the Fraser River, and as far south as Washington State.

The vast settlement in Richmond, with its many longhouses, was first observed by Hudson Bay Company officials in 1824, according to the CNA. But when the first native reserves were created in 1859, the chief commissioner for the lands for the Colony of British Columbia, Colonel Richard Moody, failed to finalize the village and its surrounding land as a Cowichan Indian Reserve, according to a press release by CNA. “Instead, (he) surreptitiously took part of the lands for himself,” reads the release.

According to court documents, approximately 80 of the 780 acres claimed in the case by CNA are owned by Richmond, while the remaining land is owned by the federal government and the port authority.

“Our homeland was stolen from us. We want the lands that are held by the government returned to us,” said Cowichan Tribes Chief William Seymour in the release.

While court documents note that the Vancouver Airport Fuel Delivery Project — approved by the federal and provincial governments in 2013 — runs through some of the disputed land, Robbins said the case doesn’t affect the project.

Other court documents filed by the federal government state there was “extensive consultation with each of the plaintiff First Nations,” and the CNA didn’t oppose the project.

Cowichan Nation is also not seeking to recover any privately held lands in the court case, said Robbins. Rather, said Robbins, CNA is “seeking a negotiated reconciliation with British Columbia” for those lands.

The nation’s plans for the publicly owned 780 acres “are to be determined,” said Robbins.

How cunning won the Great Race Chinese mythology tells how each of the 12 zodiac animals claimed its place from the skies to cross the finish line. It explained to the Jade Emperor that it arrived later than expected because it aided villagers in putting out the flames that set their crops on fire.

Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese lunar calendar. The holiday honours deities as well as ancestors, traditions and folklores passed down in families.

A story often told during Chinese New Year is how the 12 zodiacs were chosen – also known as the Great Race.

One day, the Jade Emperor, ruler of all gods within Chinese mythology, announced to all the animals on the planet that he would host a race. The first 12 to finish the race would be chosen to join him in the imperial palace.

When the sun peaked above the horizon the next day, all the animals started the race with the goal to finish the race first, however, the biggest challenge for most of them was crossing the river right before the finish line.

The Rat, knew if he didn’t do something, the Ox would arrive at the finish line first. Being quick-witted and persuasive, it convinced the powerful and kind Ox to let it ride on its back across the river.

When they got close to the other side of the river, the Rat quickly jumped off the top of the Ox’s head and crossed the finish line before

When the warm-hearted Dragon was almost at the finish line, it also helped a tiny Rabbit clinging to a log in the water by using its breath to push it to shore. it got out of the water. The Ox was too composed and conservative to make a big fuss as he crossed the line, content with second place, followed by the Tiger shortly after him.

Back on the other side of the river, the Rabbit, who was closely tailing the Tiger, jumped along a trail of rocks jutting up from the water.

Suddenly, the Rabbit slipped and tumbled into the water while panicking if it would finish the race in time.

A moment later, the Rabbit saw a floating log nearby and paddled as fast as it could and clung on tightly. The log slowed to a stop until a sudden gust of wind blew the log towards the shore where the finish line was.

With no other animal in sight, the Rabbit quickly hopped on the shore and crossed the finish line claiming fourth place.

Soon after, the Dragon swiftly descended

As the Dragon spoke with the Jade Emperor, the energetic Horse galloped across the river and onto the shore with only a few strides away from the finish line.

However, from the grass, the Snake slithered out and startled the Horse from behind.

The Horse leaped backwards in shock as the sneaky Snake took the chance to cross the finish line claiming the sixth place, with the Horse in seventh place.

When the former secretarytreasurer of the Richmond School District left in October 2017, he got a payout for 18 months salary, bringing his compensation to more than $300,000 the 2017/18 school year.

Mark de Mello left in October 2017, and his salary is listed in the Statement of Financial Information (SOFI) report at about $82,000 for 2017/18. But a note in the Public Sector Executive Compensation Disclosure Statements, filed with the province, notes his salary continued until April 2019, bringing his total compensation for 2017/18 to $304,742.

According to school district spokesperson, David Sadler, this was paid out according to the terms in his contract.

The payout is listed as a “salary continuance.”

Over the past three years, the senior team at the Richmond School District has been getting bumps in their salary, some up to 16 per cent, making up for a salary freeze imposed by the provincial government in 2012.

This was lifted in 2016.

Of the three full years that the previous superintendent, Sherry Elwood, was in the top position, her full salary — including pension payments and benefits — increased from $249,477 in 2016/17 to $297,918 in 2018/19. That comes to an increase of $48,441 over two years.

Based on a provincial review, salary grids for the Richmond school district senior team were established and approved by the Richmond Board of Education, Sadler explained.

Menstrual products coming

The Richmond School District has installed dispensers for menstrual products in female and gender-neutral washrooms in all schools.

At a cost of $70,000, the dispensers were installed by school district maintenance staff. However, the annual cost to refill the dispensers is still unknown, according to the school district.

Following a ministerial order last year, the board of education has developed a policy for the provision of menstrual products, saying a lack of access to these products can have a negative impact on students’ ability to participate at school and affect their social-emotional well-being.

Having menstrual products available will reduce stigma and pro-

mote gender equality, according to the proposed policy dealt with at its meeting last week.

The order maintains that menstrual products must be available in washrooms for students “of all gender identities,” according to the ministry website. They have to be free, easily accessible and non-stigmatizing.

YVR construction closes access

Vancouver International Airport will close the level one road access to the domestic terminal for about six months for construction starting next week.

“We want to bridge an intergenerational gap that can help us build a more cohesive community.”

Each week, the initiative will upload a video on YouTube featuring a Richmond resident from an assisted living home, who will share their life journey and experiences.

Chin approached her friends about sharing stories with the community, and the team of eight then set about last summer creating the three-month video series.

Many youth in society, Chin said, don’t communicate as much with their grandparents as they should — herself included.

“We hope to (…) involve our audience in a way that connects the community and reaches to more people,” said Chin. The residents’ stories are meant to be conversation starters, she added.

Richmond has a new condo project on the go — this time, though, they want 3,000 inhabitants at Terra Nova Park whom they expect to be sleeping most of the day.

A bat condo project is planned for Terra Nova Park — only one of many initiatives planned that has resulted in Richmond being certified as the first Lower Mainland municipality as “batfriendly,” and the third in B.C.

As urban areas spread, bats lose their roosting and foraging habitats and face threats of entrapment and death. Several bat species are listed on endangered species lists.

Richmond has several upcoming bat initiatives, for example, the bat condo project and public workshops in April at Richmond Nature Park.

As nocturnal creatures, bats are the most important predator of nocturnal insects as well as crepuscular – those active at sunset and sunrise – insects.

To be certified, the city had to commit to working with local residents and businesses on bat initiatives.

“The loss of bats would result in increased insect populations, including increased mosquitoes and insect pests of farmlands and forests,” Dagenais explained.

Dagenais pointed out some of the city’s policies, for example, around ecological management, pesticides and riparian response issues, already help the local bat population.

“Each generation has something different to offer. Young people may have physical strength and technological competence, while (the) older generation may have wisdom learned from past experiences,” said Chan.

Firefighters help homeless Richmond Fire-Rescue is reaching out to homeless people in Richmond this week with packages to help them make it through the cold snap.

Firefighters are giving out cold-weather packages with toques, gloves, socks and ponchos from their rescue trucks to help those living on the street stay dry and warm. There are also hygiene products and tea, coffee and hot chocolate packets.

The initiative comes from the North Shore-based nonprofit Warming the Homeless, which is donating the items.

“Travelling — it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller,” are the prophetic words of the world traveller and medieval Moroccan scholar Ibn Battuta.

Last week, Jen Williams was one of those storytellers, telling a captivated audience about her solo adventure through more than 80 countries and islands in the past two years.

Williams was the special guest at a regular meetup group organized by fellow traveller Kendrick Uy, 35.

This event was specifically for women who want to go on a solo trip and the men who support them.

Uy is a Richmondite and also a solo traveller who has been running the meetup group at Vancity Credit Union’s Blundell location every two weeks since 2015.

Uy can’t remember how many backpackers he has invited to share their experiences, but the group has grown from 10 members to more than 400 within five years.

Uy recalled the first time he organized a traveller’s meetup event.

“The (participants) all told me, ‘I want to travel alone, but I am scared.’ But after years went by, more people from the group have started their adventures.

“A group member who was once scared about visiting Africa just came back as a tough guy. The meetup group has … encour-

aged people who have dreamed of traveling to go for it,” said Uy, with a proud smile.

380 days, 75 countries, $187,000 Uy, a fitness trainer, recalls the moment he caught the travel bug at age 31.

It was in 2015 and he was 31 when he attended an event titled “Make your dream trip a reality,” hosted by Chris Guillebeau, an American non-fiction author, blogger and speaker.

“When I was watching the presentation, a light bulb went on in my head. I thought, ‘I am going to travel around the world for one year.’”

Uy worked multiple jobs to pay off his student debt but still managed to save for his dream trip and on Sept. 14, 2016, Uy left Richmond with USD $187,000 to embark

on a journey of a lifetime. By the end of his 380-day trek, he had traipsed across six continents and 75 countries.

According to Uy, the journey brought him lots of sweet memories: doing volunteer work teaching teens English in Poland, visiting Komodo Dragon Island in Indonesia and enjoying $2 street food in Thailand.

Trapped in the jungle in Guyana However, there were also some horrible experiences.

Uy recalled having a dreadful time travelling from Brazil to Georgetown, Guyana’s capital on South America’s North Atlantic coast. He was taking a 24-hour minivan ride through the dense jungle of Guyana when Uy and other passengers stopped at a restaurant. At that point, the van driver seemed to retrieve sacks of alcohol from the

“Later, we were stopped by a military or police roadblock. It turned out, our driver was an alcohol smuggler,” said Uy. The police confiscated the van and the passengers were simply dumped on the side of the road in the middle of the jungle at 2 a.m. with no civilization in sight.

Luckily, the next day at 8:30 a.m., a pickup truck drove by them, and the passengers ran after the truck begging the driver to take them to Georgetown. After paying the driver $25 each, they were allowed to get on the truck.

“The pickup truck couldn’t fit us all, and the driver had to put people in the cargo bed. I was lucky because they put me in the front, but I needed to share the seat with another African man.

“One of my legs was over the gear stick for eight hours, and my back hurt so badly.

When we reached our destination, those at the back were covered by mud.”

The ride was the most uncomfortable and cramped experience Uy ever had. However, he was still grateful to arrive at his destination.

Despite having been discarded in the middle of the rainforest, Uy also found himself through the journey. “(Embarking on a journey) will make you become independent and learn to trust and rely on yourself, said Uy. Uy plans to take another one-year trip with a friend soon. Meanwhile, he will also keep running the travel meetup group and updating his travel blog.

Seniors need help in winter Agency asks about inclusion Alan Campbell

As winter kicks in, a Richmond non-profit is asking for more volunteers to help the city’s seniors get to appointments, the grocery store and have more social interaction.

The winter months, says Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), can bring community life to a standstill.

Transportation becomes more difficult, and even going outside can be a chilly, slippery proposition.

For seniors with mobility issues, snowy weather and sub-zero temperatures can prevent them from getting to medical appointments, shopping for groceries, or participating in social activities.

RCRG works with a large team of volunteers to ensure that older adults have access to transportation, fresh groceries and social interaction, even in the midst of winter.

And following Richmond’s first snowfall of the season, more volunteers are needed.

“Volunteer drivers, grocery shopping assistants, friendly visitors — we require additional help in all of these areas,” said

Carol Dickson, RCRG’s manager of Community Support Services.

“Even a few hours a week makes a big difference.”

Hundreds of older adults rely on RCRG and its volunteers to maintain their independence and stay connected to the community.

“Our goal is to provide safe, reliable services, so that seniors know they can call on us when they need help,” added Dickson.

“Whether it’s a trip to the doctor, or a check-in from a friendly visitor, we’re here to support healthy aging throughout the year.”

A Richmond non-profit organization wants to hear how families have experienced inclusive education.

Richmond Society for Community Living (RSCL) is asking for community input to create a video documenting the history of inclusive education in the Richmond School District.

Richmond residents are encouraged to submit any photos, stories, documentation or artifacts about their children’s journey — positive and negative experiences — with inclusive education

in the past or present.

According to a media statement, RSCL believes “creating visual documentation of the history is important to share with (the) community.”

The project will “help us remember the past, see our progress, and underscore the importance of moving forward, never back, in our journey of inclusive education.”

Tao earned his trip to nationals by finishing second at the recent B.C. Junior Championships in Victoria.

The host province earned an extra berth after Nunavut decided not to field a team.

“It feels great. Knowing that we have earned a spot to nationals is amazing. To be able to go there and have a really good learning experience and grow in the sport is a really great feeling” said Tao after his semi-final win.

The Sockeyes secured the Tunnel Cup for the first time in the three-year-old regular season rivalry series with a 7-3 win over the Delta Ice Hawks. They finished with a 2-0-1-1 record in the four head-to-head battles.

Richmond was also active prior to last Friday’s roster deadline — signing defenceman Jason Lin and forward Andrew Kemp.

The 17-year-old Lin has spent the bulk of the season with the BC Hockey League’s Surrey Eagles. He previously played two games as an AP with the Sockeyes and is now affiliated with his hometown Coquitlam Express where he has also made a couple of appearances.

“He is a young guy but he comes with that junior ‘A’ experience. He has a good element and he makes that good first pass,” said Richmond head coach Brett Reusch. “He choose to sign with us to finish the year off and hopefully help us win a championship.”

Kemp, 20, is no stranger to the Sockeyes organization.

He played for his hometown team during the 2017-18 campaign before spending last season with the Ice Hawks where he had 34 points in 37 games. Now he Is back in Richmond to help during the stretch run in his final year of junior.

The Sockeyes host Abbotsford on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Alumni Game It’s one of the biggest nights of the season for the Richmond Sockeyes and two points aren’t even on the line.

The junior hockey club will host its annual Alumni Game on Saturday (5:45 p.m.) at Minoru Arenas.

The evening is a key fundraiser for the Sockeyes’ highly successful scholarship program that aids present and past players with their post-secondary education.

In the last 18 years, over $330,000 has been raised.

This year’s graduates include: Goalies- Jordan Imoo and Kootney Alder. Defencemen- Alex Koch, Jordan Andrews, Keenan Webb, Mike Ball, Clayton Wright, Steve Sawada, Jordan Oye, Turner Popoff. Forwards- Kyle Nishi, Patrick Hunter, Carter Popoff, Eli Weibe, Paul Hobbs, Ray Sawada, Trevor Hamguchi, Ryan Johnson, Sean Thorsteinson, Tyler Andrews, Clayton Chessa and Dean Allison.

BURROWS, John R. June 29, 1927 − December 15, 2019 The family of John Russell Burrows ("Jack") sadly announces his peaceful passing on December 15, 2019, at age 92. Jack was born June 29, 1927, in Vernon, BC, and moved to Steveston in 1942, where he made his home for much of his life.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen; parents, Jack Sr. and Josephine; and sisters, Doreen and Loretta; he is lovingly survived by his sister, Fern.

Jack will be remembered and sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews, as well as Helen’s family. A man of strong faith, he will also be missed by his family at Bakerview Gospel Church.

Jack was a 65−year member of Local 2404 of the Piledrivers, Divers, Bridge, Dock, and Wharf Builders Union. As a proud tradesman, he often recounted tales of working on iconic structures such as the Ironworkers Memorial, Granville Street and Alex Fraser Bridges, and the George Massey Tunnel. As an independent contractor, he also built a select number of custom homes in Richmond and Delta.

Jack loved to cross−country ski and ice skate, where he met Helen, who he always called "the love of his life."

Jack was quietly laid to rest with Helen at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Westminster House in Surrey for their kindness and loving care of Jack. We also thank Forest Lawn and Dignity Memorial for their compassion and kind assistance.
