Time to imagine a new normal literally yelling at him. Hope everyone else on the dike enjoyed our fascinating conversation.

It was probably one of the more mundane things our prime minister said during his morning briefing to the nation earlier this week.

Regardless, it’s what stuck with me.

I actually wrote it down somewhere, but given I did so before being adequately caffeinated, who knows where that scrap of paper is now.

Anyway, what he said had something to do with the fact we all “just want to get back to normal.”

But do we?

Obviously, we want this pandemic over.

Listening to some of the horror stories from doctors and nurses on the frontlines has literally brought me to tears. (I hope Trudeau is putting something aside for the PTSD counselling many of those folks are going to need when this is over.)

I could also do without the incessant handwashing, searching for toilet paper and trying to calculate which aisle to go down at the supermarket so as to keep my distance from others; as they say, six feet apart or six feet under.

In fact, I think it’s time we start adopting a new normal. If we don’t, we may be right back here a few years down the road. A little more vigilance regarding hygiene is the most obvious thing we could change, but it goes far beyond that.

We need to think about how long-term care facilities are run. Granted, viruses happen and long-term care facilities house the most vulnerable population. So, not surprisingly, they’re hardest hit. Still, stories have emerged about both the Lynn Valley care home in North Vancouver and the Bobcaygeon care home in Ontario that point to possible reasons why these homes, in particular, became a virus’ dream.

This also leads into decisions we’ve made regarding health care in general. Funny how now, in a time of crises, money is no object, but when we should have been investing in, oh let’s say, a new north tower at Richmond Hospital, there were corporate tax cuts and investment in LNG instead.

Another thing we should consider as a new normal is working from home.

Frankly, I never would have thought we could put out a newspaper from our various dining rooms, bedrooms and basement bars...but here it is.

Kristene Murray Photo Not only that, but we’ve had plenty of conversation and social connection along the way thanks to Zoom, Slack, email and text. Granted, working remotely has its glitches, but if we are to keep this planet livable for future generations, we have to find more sustainable ways of working, and ditching regular hour-long commutes is one of them.

Also on the environment front, here’s a headline I read in Ensia, an online site that reports on the environment and human health.

It reads, “Destruction of habitat and loss of biodiversity are creating the perfect conditions for diseases like COVID-19 to emerge.”

The article quotes David Quammen, author of Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Pandemic who says, “We invade tropical forests and other wild landscapes, which harbor so many species of animals and plants — and within those creatures, so many unknown viruses...We disrupt ecosystems, and we shake viruses loose from their natural hosts. When that happens, they need a new host.

Point being, right now, the continued destruction of ecosystems is the norm. Hour-long commutes to work through the Lower Mainland is the norm. And, at some long-term care homes, though certainly not all, staff without paid sick leave and patient overcrowding is the norm.

So do we really want to get back to normal?

The death toll of 42,000 (and counting) is only part of the tragedy unfolding with this pandemic. In its wake, COVID-19 will also leave some profound physical, emotional and financial scars. We have a responsibility to not let that be in vain.

There are big lessons to learn here. Probably the biggest being that we are one humanity living on one planet. Let’s get our priorities straight. If there’s a silver lining, this crisis can help us do that.

Nothing good about virus Advocate warns against sex trafficking, exploitation Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Re: “Former teacher addresses human trafficking at Richmond council,” Online, March 9 This article completely misrepresents and discredits me and my work/advocacy to raise awareness to the rapidly growing crime of human sex trafficking/sexual exploitation and child sex trafficking in B.C. and Canada.

Best references is the TIP (Trafficking in Persons) report from the U.S. State Department for 2019 where Canada is cited as not collecting data on the issue and not consistently enforcing the current law we have — Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. Contributing factors to a rapidly growing sex industry is globalization, unregulated technology, limited law enforcement and very little prevention education. I have been working on prevention education for the last 30 years, and presenting to politicians (all three levels of government), police and the public for the last seven years full-time.

To be accused by a pro-sex industry organization of being a non-expert, incoherent in my work and causing harm is a serious and false allegation.

B.C. is a vulnerable province for this type of criminal activity, and Vancouver is a global hotspot since it is an entry point into Canada and a port city.

With the presence of gangs, organized crime and international crime syndicates, crime follows the money. Human sex trafficking for the purpose of prostitution is a lowrisk, high-income crime and our youth and children are being aggressively targeted.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reeled out more details on the government’s 75-percent wage subsidy for Canadians during the COVID-19 crisis.

Trudeau announced Monday that the number of workers a business employs doesn’t matter, as long as it can show a revenue decrease of at least 30 per cent since the pandemic was declared.

Previously, it was thought the government’s aid package applied only to small to medium sized businesses.

Trudeau added that the government will pay 75 per cent of an employee’s wage up to $58,700, equivalent to $847 per week.

The subsidy, said the prime minister, would be backdated to March 15, as previously announced.

Non-profits and charities will also qualify.

“This is about making sure people still get paid,” added Trudeau.

Trudeau, however, cautioned businesses by saying that the government is trusting them to “do the right thing” and asked them to top up the other 25 per cent of the wage if “they have the means.”

And he warned that if unscrupulous employers don’t play by the rules, there will be severe consequences.

Trudeau wasn’t able to elaborate on what those consequences were or how the government would know if a business was not “playing by the rules.”

“For this to work, everyone has to do their part. You should do everything you can to top up their wages and re-hire those that were laid off.”

The prime minister said the government has been saving up for a “rainy day.”

“Well, it’s raining,” he said.

Trudeau added on Wednesday that applications can be made for the subsidy on April 6.

Canadian troops ready to deploy, U.S. army backs off The Canadian armed forces are ready to deploy if needed during the pandemic.

Harjit Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, said Monday there are 24,000 regular and reserve members “ready to be called into action.”

Sajjan said Canada’s armed forces are “always there” if the country needs them.

“If it is necessary, (the armed forces) will be ready to be deployed, but we are not planning to deploy the forces at this point,” he said.

“No premier has asked us to deploy.”

Meanwhile, there were reports Tuesday that U.S. troops will not be mobilizing near the Canadian border, despite the possibility arising last week.

The Richmond News reported last week how the prime minister said the federal government was in talks with the Trump administration to ensure the Canada-U.S. border remained un-militarized.

Trudeau said it’s in the best interests of both countries for the border to remain that way.

The Canada-U.S. border was closed to all non-essential travel two weeks ago. Canada also agreed to turn back all irregular migrants during this time.

That border is the longest un-militarized border in the world.

Feds spend $2B on medical supplies to fi ght COVID-19 The federal government will purchase another $2 billion in personal protective equipment (PPE) as it accelerates efforts to tap domestic industry for more medical supplies.

Trudeau said Tuesday (March 31) his government has secured three contracts and inked letters of intent with five other Canadian companies to boost access to supplies such as masks, face shields, gowns, test kits, hand sanitizer and ventilators.

Richmond residents will have an extra three months to pay their 2020 flat-rate utility bill due to COVID-19.

The City of Richmond announced on Monday that the utility bill due date has been extended from March 31 to June 30 because of the “rapidly evolving COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) situation.”

However, residents who make their payment on or before the new deadline will still receive the 10-per-cent early payment discount.

City staff is requesting all payments to be made remotely by the following options: Online or telephone banking through a financial institution; Online through the city’s website using a credit card; Mail a cheque to City of Richmond Tax Department (6911 No. 3 Rd.); Drop off a cheque in the 24-hour drop box at Richmond City Hall’s west entrance.

Council has also eliminated cash transactions at city hall until after Sept. 30 to reduce the risk of theft and to improve physical distancing.

B.C. had a spike in deaths from COVID-19 this week, with six new deaths recorded between Monday and Tuesday.

The five deaths Monday was the highest number of COVID-related fatalities since the beginning of the outbreak. It brings the total death rate in B.C. to 25.

There have been 96 additional COVID-19 cases since Monday, bringing the B.C. total to 1,066. Of that number, 142 are in hospital, 67 are in intensive care and 606 people have recovered.

The province’s chief medical health officer, Bonnie Henry, added Tuesday that Interior Health was investigating B.C.’s “first large community outbreak,” which involves a group of temporary foreign workers in housing at a West Kelowna agricultural business called Bylands Nursery.

Asked how long it may be before some of the provincial restrictions on work, travel and socializing might be lifted, B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix said there was “zero” chance that it would be before the end of April.

The province ended the month with 19 seniors’ facilities that have had outbreaks, although in most of the homes it was a single case, Henry told media Tuesday. Two more were added to the list on Wednesday.

Henry said that all of the seniors’ homes that have cases are in the Vancouver Coastal Health or Fraser Health regions and that most of the homes have had a single case.

Minister of Public Safety Mike Farnworth announced measures Thursday to ban the secondary resale of food, medical supplies, personal protective equipment, cleaning and other essential supplies. Farnworth said B.C. will restrict quantities of items purchased at the point of sale.

Free hospital parking If you’re a health-care worker, a patient or a visitor to a B.C. hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s some financial relief in sight.

On Monday, Health Minister Dix announced there will be no hospital parking fees as of April 1. The measure is aimed at stopping the spread of the virus by avoiding contact with screens at kiosks.

New traffic intersection cameras are being installed in Richmond with restrictions set by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) to ensure they’re not used for “generic surveillance.”

While Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said he doesn’t understand why people would object to their photos being taken while out in public, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) points out the public is allowed a certain level of anonymity — and expect

If faces and license plates weren’t blurred out, the information could be used maliciously, for example, by a stalker, or just for general surveillance by the state, explained McDermott.

Large police raid in Steveston Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM Few details are being released about a major police presence at a single-family home Saturday in Steveston.

In the early evening, residents on Steveston Highway — west of No. 1 Road and close to the Sixth Avenue intersection — were alarmed to see more than a dozen marked and unmarked police vehicles arrive.

According to eyewitnesses, three people were taken away in handcuffs, while the residence in question was cordoned off by police tape.

However, Richmond RCMP said it wasn’t in a position to divulge any details of the incident due to the investigation being “fluid and dynamic.”

A spokesperson for the RCMP did say that a search warrant had been executed, but that no other details could be released as it may “jeopardize ongoing police operations.”

Police probing serious crash Richmond RCMP are investigating a serious two-vehicle collision that occurred at a major intersection.

RCMP say that, shortly after 7:30 a.m. last Wednesday, March 26, they responded to a serious two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Gilbert and Francis roads.

Both vehicles sustained “heavy damage,” according to RCMP. One of the vehicles

ended up upside down on its roof, after striking a lamppost and a residential fence.

The occupants of both vehicles sustained non-life threatening injuries.

An unmarked police car, with lights activated, was also involved in the accident.

The officer wasn’t injured.

YVR traffic is down dramatically because of travel restrictions.

The sudden drop in air traffic at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) because of COVID-19 is causing widespread layoffs.

And, as a ripple effect, some hotels in Richmond have also closed.

Around 70,000 passengers normally travel through YVR daily at the end of spring break — last week, that number was between 10,000 and 20,000.

At the moment, only Canadians and permanent residents are returning to Canada.

This drop in travel has resulted in three hotels closing in Richmond, the Marriott, River Rock and the Hilton.

The BC Hotel Association expects two-thirds of hotels across the province to close over the next few months.

Flights are down 40 to 50 per cent, explained the

airport’s CEO Craig Richmond, and this is expected to decrease further.

Businesses in the airport have had about 26,000 employees onsite, but this has already dropped by more than 50 per cent.

About 6,000 airport workers live in the City of Richmond, and the CEO said he know this will hit them hard.

This pandemic and its effect on the airport is like nothing Richmond has seen before.

Nine out of 10 airport tenants have shut their doors, large areas in the airport are closed, and construction has been halted with 4,000 jobs affected.

But, he said, health and safety are top of mind.

Air Canada is laying off 15,300 unionized employees and 1,300 management staff in what it’s calling a temporary measure.

He couldn’t yet give any exact figures on the expected drop in revenues.

Cold, Flu or Allergy? What are the differences?

Cold, flu and allergy share similar signs and symptoms and therefore can be confusing to diagnose. Understanding the differences between them can help you identify the condition and select appropriate treatment options. Cold, flu and allergy can all affect your respiratory system, which can make you develop symptom of coughing. But each condition also has key differences that set them apart. Cold and flu are caused by different viruses. The flu or influenza is primarily caused by Influenza A or B viruses, whereas the majority of common cold is caused by rhinoviruses. Both cold and flu can lead to runny nose, congestion, cough and sore throat. But the flu symptoms are much worse and can also include high fever, headache, fatigue and general aches and pain.

These symptoms are less common when you have a cold. Usually, complications from cold are relatively rare, but people with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems can develop serious complications like pneumonia or bronchitis from the cold and flu. The cold and flu viruses contain many different strains and subtypes and yet there are still a lot of viruses that have not been identified. New strains of flu and cold virus evolve every few years and therefore getting a flu shot every year is important to protect yourself and others. Allergy, on the other hand, is a little different because it is not caused by a virus.

Instead, it is your own immune system reacting to a trigger or an allergen. When you have allergies and breathe in pollen or dust, the immune cells in your nose and respiratory tract overreact and stimulate release of histamines leading to running nose, sneezing, coughing and mucus build-up. Allergy can also cause itchy, watery eyes, which you don’t normally have with cold or flu. Allergy symptoms usually last as long as your are exposed to the allergen, which can last weeks or months during pollen seasons. Conversely, cold and flu rarely last beyond 2 weeks. Most people with cold or flu recover without medical care and generally require symptomatic relief with over-the-counter products to reduce pain, fever, nasal congestion, and cough; however if symptoms last beyond 10 days, check with your pharmacist and family physician.

Immediate dentures are always best, unless there is so much mobility in your teeth that taking an impression may cause an accidental extraction when the impression is removed. The immediate denture will act as a band aid as well as to help reshape the bone to a kinder more rounded form, rather than leaving the sharp edges that are formed by the circumference of the extraction socket. Follow up must be done by your dental practitioner in order to keep up with the changing shape as the bone and tissue heal. If you have extractions done and the denture is made after a period of couple months then the bone from the circumference of the socket has prematurely healed and is now standing up. When a denture is placed on the tissues, the bone from underneath now stabs you from the inside out. There is one way that you can do the latter method. Once your initial wound site has closed, then you must massage the bone together towards the center of gum. This will tell the body that the bone must reshape to a rounder shape.

Less than a week after forming, a Richmond Facebook group is reaching out to the most vulnerable and marginalized during this health-care emergency.

“I can’t be cozy and happy if I know others aren’t fulfilling their basic needs,” she said.

Some food bank clients told her they were too afraid to pick up their food hampers — three of the food bank off-site locations are closed so food can only be picked up on Cedarbridge Way. Taking a couple of buses to the city centre didn’t feel safe. Some said, “the exposure amount is not worth the risk.”

Young mothers enrolled in the Colts program — which allows them to finish their education — were getting food bank deliveries from senior volunteers, but these volunteers have had to take a backseat as the coronavirus outbreak keeps them from going out in the community.

The Richmond COVID-19 Facebook group rustled up some volunteer drivers and next

The City of Richmond has extended hours at 35 public washrooms for the homeless, but there aren’t many other places for them to go in the daytime.

De Whalen, chair of the Richmond Poverty Response Committee, has been asking the city since early in the COVID-19 crisis for some sites to be opened up — with proper social distancing measures — where the homeless population could go in the daytime. As of yet, she has had no response from the city.

We continue to help families through challenging times

“It gives other parents and kids a purpose … to thank our health-care heroes,” she said.

The COVID-19 Richmond Coming Together group is already 370 strong, with many people asking how they can help and others requesting help during this crisis, explained Steveston resident Karina Reid, who modelled the group on a similar one in Vancouver.

While everyone is being encouraged to stay home and hunker down in order to combat the spread of COVID-19, Reid said she felt the need to reach out to see if the most vulnerable needed help.

The homeless population normally spends time at libraries, community centres and fast food restaurants where they can also access washrooms.

Right now, they are just staying outside, sitting on benches, in Minoru Park or outside of malls, Whalen explained.

“There is nothing for them there and nowhere for them to go,” she added.

While there are not community amenities for homeless people, there are washrooms across the city for them to use.

Richmond city staff identified 35 washrooms — three with showers — in parks throughout the city

that haven’t been closed and will now stay open until 10 p.m. — they previously closed at 6 p.m.

A map will be distributed among service providers to let those who need washroom facilities throughout the day know where they are located.

A port-a-potty will be added at the works yard on Lynas Lane as well.

While the health authority hasn’t asked the city for the use of any facilities for the COVID-19 response, the Accent Inn is being held for use by the federal government, but according to a spokesperson for the hotel chain, details can’t be released.

From billboards to face shields

It was midnight last Thursday and Jin Ma and his friends were still working in Ma’s factory in east Richmond.

The factory produces signs and billboards — at least it did until Ma and his friends came across a video online in which a Taiwanese anesthesiologist, Dr. Hsien Yung Lai, shows how to create what he calls an Aerosol Box, a piece of

equipment that gives additional protection to doctors while they perform endotracheal intubations on patients.

Dr. Lai shared his design concept, the raw materials used and costs online, encouraging others to follow suit.

“We spent a long time looking at the instructions, finding materials and making these products to fight COVID-19,” said Ma, adding that his friends and others will share the costs, including $4,000 in materials.

“Most products will be donated to frontline workers. I just want to help my community,” said Ma, who’s billboard and sign manufacturing company has been operating in Richmond for many years.

“My children and wife asked me to stay home and let others take care of it. But it’s time for me to step up to support others as much as I can,” said Jiang.

“The good thing is that we don’t need to count labour costs — my friends and I have been volunteering to work in the factory.”

“Protecting the safety and health of health-care workers is so important. If they get sick, this will leave all of society on the brink of collapse.”

Jeff Jiang, a close friend of Ma, said he didn’t want his family to know that he was working in the factory to produce the protective gear, because they might get worried.

With help from local volunteers, the friends have managed to donate several aerosol boxes and four face shields to Vancouver General Hospital and Surrey Memorial Hospital for testing.

Ma also inscribes a heartfelt message on the side of each aerosol box they make.

“We are called to live not as one without others, above or against others, but with and for others. The Chinese community is with you,” reads the message.

Sabine Yep wept when she saw the Air Canada flight crew lined up outside the plane on the tarmac of an air force base in Lima, waving Canadian flags.

“Once I saw the Air Canada plane and the stewardesses, with their flags waving and greeting (us), I started crying,” said Yep, 47, speaking to the Richmond News over the phone just hours after arriving home to Richmond on the first emergency flight out of Peru.

“Once we were sitting inside (the plane), I thought, okay, we’re going home. Everybody was clapping,” said the long-time West Richmond Community Centre fitness instructor and personal trainer, who is now in self-isolation with her family.

Both Yep — who immigrated to Canada in 1989 — and her husband Arturo, 48, grew up in Peru. The couple wanted to take their daughters, Lucia, 13, and Valentina, 11, to Cusco to see Machu Picchu, visit family and experience the life and culture of the country they grew up in, said Yep. But the trip didn’t go as planned. While there were no travel advisories preventing them from leaving Richmond March 11, said Yep, everything changed within a matter of hours — both in Canada and Peru.

‘Everything changed’ “We flew via Toronto Wednesday (March 11), and by the time we landed in Lima (the next day), everything had changed, literally, in those 24 hours,” said Yep. On March 11, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic.

One day later — the day the Yeps arrived in Peru — B.C. advised against all non-essential travel outside of Canada.

While things were still “quite calm” in Lima when the family arrived there Thursday, March 12, and there was no official

country closed its borders in the wake of the coronavirus.

The Peruvian government gave people just 24 hours to make their way home to their primary residence, said Yep. After that, the country would be under a “zero tolerance” curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day.

That same day, the federal government echoed the advice of B.C. and other provinces, urging Canadians to postpone or cancel any non-essential trips outside of the country.

While the rest of us have been either working from home, watching Netflix or perusing social media, one young actor has been busy live streaming a one-man, two-and-a-half hour production of Les Miserables.

Like many residents, the pandemic is affecting Sakaki as a performing artist financially, but the fear of the community turning away from theatre frightens him even more.

“I wanted to do something creative that day (March 23) to fill the void that the (Gateway) show would have. So, I decided to do it to honour the fact that I was supposed to start rehearsal that day,” explained Jason Sakaki, a Steveston resident and McMath secondary grad.

“It’s a little bit unsettling for actors because we don’t know when it’s going to end since we will not be able to get back to work until it’s fully over. That’s the scary thing right now I think,” said Sakaki.

Gateway Theatre’s production From Alaska was cancelled earlier this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sakaki added, “(I didn’t) think it would pick up so much traction with many people being super invested in the show,” which was staged in every room in his house to give the impression of set changes.

A Richmond family doctor, along with other volunteer physicians, is standing by the phone ready to answer your pandemic questions.

Charles Jiang launched the medical advice hotline after receiving an “urgent notice” from the Doctors of B.C. and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. about the shortage of medical resources during the coronavirus pandemic.

“These two regulatory bodies encourage doctors and pharmacists to provide medical services to patients via video and telephone. After talking with other licensed family doctors and employees at my clinic, we reached an agreement within a minute to do our best to meet the…need.”

The hotline, which is available Monday to Friday, aims to reassure patients in these times of uncertainty and ensure that people who suffer

from non-COVID-19 diseases don’t take up additional medical resources at hospitals, according to Jiang.

“Some patients who suffer from the flu might spend several hours trying to reach the 811 health line operated by the province. They find it nerve-wracking if a doctor can’t show up in time to answer their questions,” said Jiang.

“We will reassure them first after knowing their symptoms are different from those who test positive for COVID-19.

Then we will send an electronic prescription to a local pharmacy. Patients can drop by to pick up medicine or pharmacy staff will deliver medicine to their homes,” said Jiang, noting that some patients’ voices quaver when they finally get a chance to talk to a doctor.

The hotline number is 1-866-598-0028 and is available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. People with MSP can access it for free in English and Chinese.

A rollercoaster month for rugby star Nathan Hirayama will have to wait until 2021 for his first Olympic Games Mark Booth MBOOTH@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A little over three weeks ago Nate Hirayama was soaking in one of the highlights of his career — captaining the host country to its firstever podium finish at the HSBC Canada Rugby Sevens in front of nearly 40,000 cheering fans at BC Place Stadium. Now he safely waits at his Victoria home wondering when he will be back on the field again.

COVID-19 has postponed the four remaining tournaments on the World Series schedule in London, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Even bigger, the Summer Olympic Games have been pushed back to 2021 with the International Olympic Committee announcing the new dates (July 23 to Aug. 8) on Monday.

It’s almost hard to imagine the Vancouver tournament was such a short time ago given where the world is today.

“It’s crazy. Obviously we knew about COVID-19 and we talked about it but cancelling the tournament wasn’t even in question at that time. I didn’t even think about it,”recalled Hirayama. “Then a couple of days later (NBA player) Rudy Gobert tested positive and that’s when things kind of blew up.

“We were supposed to have been back on the field that Friday and it elevated even further. Training got

cancelled. At that time we thought if (the Vancouver) tournament was held a weekend later it might not have even happened which would have been a shame.”

The Richmond native would soon learn the Canadian Olympic Committee would not be sending a team to Tokyo this summer. Fortunately, the Games were postponed 48 hours later.

“It seems silly for us to be worrying about playing a sport right now,” Hirayama continued. “Obviously a lot of us have sacrificed a lot of time and stuff for the Olympics and it was very, very important. It is my life and it is a lot of our lives but certainly there are a lot more important things going on right now in the world that should take precedent.”

Getting the opportunity to represent his country at an Olympic Games has provided Hirayama with motivation for much of his time with the national team program.

He recalls a decade ago when the process began of rugby sevens becoming an Olympic sport. Canada then missed out on a berth when it debuted at the 2016 Games in Rio. “Some people wanted to go overseas and play professionally but it has kind of been my goal. Just how cool it would be to play rugby at the Olympics,” said the McRoberts graduate.

“There was a big group of us that stuck together for four or five

The Olympics being pushed back doesn’t change Hirayama’s career outlook.

Once normality returns, he is looking at what could be an extended World Series schedule with the four postponed tournaments played in the fall before jumping into the 2020-21 season next December.

At 32, his game has never been better — earning all-tournament team honours in Vancouver. He attends regular work outs at the Rugby Canada training centre in nearby Langford with the same passion as his teenage days with the Richmond Rugby Club.

“I was just going to re-evaluate everything (if the Olympics did take place). This kind of makes my decision for me,” added Hirayama.

“Just push it back and hopefully everything works out, not just for the Olympics, but for the world, first and foremost.”

The Connaught Skating Club has turned to technology to try and bring some normality into the lives of about 120 of its young members.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought all community sports to a complete halt. Some like hockey and soccer were in the stretch runs of their campaigns, while others like baseball and field hockey had yet to launch.

For competitive figure skaters, there really isn’t a season but rather months of work that goes into peaking at regional, provincial and national competitions before almost immediately beginning the cycle again, typi-

cally to prepare for a higher level. It means being on the ice as often as five days a week, creating a family-like environment, between the skaters, coaches and parents.

Connaught’s competitive group had just gone into a rare week-long break when several COVID-19 safety measures were announced including the closure of all city-run recreational facilities.

Thanks to the program and the technical expertise of coach Leah Warwick, about a dozen 45-minute classes are being conducted a week. They are being led by 10 different coaches and the skaters are able to see each other training.

For club’s director of programs, the immediate concern was the impact on kids that were used to so much structure in their lives.

“My first thought was this might not hit them for a week or so when they are supposed to be back in the classroom and back on the ice,” said Keegan Murphy.

To help their skaters progress at home, and, more importantly stay in regular communica-

Connaught’s spring component looks to be in jeopardy. It included a trip to Vancouver Island early next month for a competition and during the Victoria Day Weekend as well. The hope is everyone will be back on the ice for the summer day camp sessions.

The online training is also helping the coaches during what is a difficult time for everyone.

“It doesn’t matter what sport you are talking about, you are bringing structure and positivity into daily lives of the kids and you have a passion for it,” added Murphy. “It can be a struggle when it is suddenly taken away from you like this.”

KEHOE, Kathleen Jean August 21, 1928 − March 11, 2020 After a life dedicated to her family, our amazing mother Kathleen Jean Kehoe passed away in Vancouver General Hospital. Kathleen (also known as Kay or Kate) was born in Vanleek Hill, Ontario.

Her smile was engaging; her kindness and gentleness were evident to all she met. She is predeceased by her husband James Bernard Kehoe (1980); infant son David Michael Kehoe (1959); son Christopher Stephen Kehoe (2017); brother Bill Quinton. Survived by daughters Karen Kehoe and Maureen Kehoe; daughter−in−law Marie Janzen. No more pain and no more wheelchairs, our mom is now with her Lord and Saviour, and with all her family and friends who have gone on before her. Details of Celebration of Life service in Vancouver still to be determined.

KERN, Olive Emily June 9, 1933 − March 17, 2020 With a strong faith that guided her through life, our precious Mom went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ to her eternal home on Tuesday, March 17. On Saint Patrick’s Day, she was forever reunited with the love of her life, Sydney (2016). Mom is survived by her four children, Laurie Schultz (Barry), Valerie Brady, Michael, and Colleen Burnyeat (Bill); six grandchildren, Elijah Schultz (Jessica), Emily Rolfe (Kyle), Brian Brady (Kelly), Cavan Brady, Shannon Silvanovich (Mark), and Michael Burnyeat; three precious great− grandchildren, Madeline, Hal, and Kennedy; and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends.

Before raising her family in Richmond, mom was a registered nurse, a graduate of St. Paul’s in Vancouver. Mom was a fierce community advocate for recreation supports in Richmond, a dedicated community volunteer, proud co−founder of SOS Treasure Cottage in Steveston, and a long− term parishioner at St. Joseph’s the Worker. Mom enjoyed the timeless arts of knitting and crocheting.

She loved her garden, and most importantly, enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her cozy home.

Mom taught us the importance of education and hard work. Home and family were her strength and stay, and she unfailingly gave us support, encouragement and unconditional love.

Private prayers held at St. Joseph’s the Worker Parish on March 24th. Memorial Mass at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mom’s memory to the SOS Children’s Village (www.sosbc.org).
