Long, long ago, before the Time When Time Stood Still, I explained in this space that I had become a gym rat, hitting the treadmill at least three times a week.

But now that municipalities are looking to slowly open up public facilities again in some limited capacity, we need to focus on who needs them the most.

Well, that was in January, and I was writing at the Richmond News office on Ackroyd Road.

My sister normally swims several times a week for therapeutic reasons. It’s the only exercise that her body tolerates. With pools closed already for two months, she has had a sharp increase in pain. She needs to get back to the pool.

Now, it’s the Month of Eternity in the Year of the Pandemic, and I write from my home office, and the community centre I was frequenting has been shuttered for months.

And I am sure there are hundreds of other people like my sister who have physical disabilities or mobility issues, especially seniors, who need our recreation facilities much more than me.

After pouting for a few weeks at the beginning of the shutdown, I decided the trails around my home would become my new treadmill and I started going on daily, then twice daily, walks — later adding a bit of running. Now I walk/run 50/50 at least twice a day.

I can keep running through the trails forever — well, you know, until I die. But there are many people who can’t run, can’t walk, can’t move with the same ease as the rest of us able-bodied folks.

Add to that, long walks on the weekend – this Saturday was a five-kilometre walk to a bakery in the rain — and five kilometres home.

A few weeks ago, I was going stir crazy and walked 12 kilometres from downtown Vancouver to my home in South Vancouver: three and a half hours. Except for a slight ache in my hip, I bounced back and was back to my walk/run the next day.

My ability to walk and run as much as I do is wholly due to the fact that I am blessed with very good health and strong legs and bones.

Not everyone is so lucky and I am grateful every day for my health (and my good mental health —

If I were making the decisions at city hall — ooh, wouldn’t that be interesting — I would insist that recreation facilities are made available first for those who actually need the exercise equipment to keep them healthy and out of pain. People who need it the most should be the top priority.

We will most likely have restrictions on how many people can enter facilities at a time to ensure physical distancing for some time. I am worried those precious spaces will be filled with able-bodied people and those who really need it will be shut out.

I am staying on the trails.

Let those who really need it become the gym rats in the Year of the Pandemic.

Re: “Why is there no COVID-19 testing site in Richmond?” Voices, May 14.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide accurate information to Richmond residents, especially during the rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic, so we’re happy to address the questions raised in your column of May 14: Why is there no COVID-19 testing site in Richmond?

First, regarding the public debate around testing or not testing, the answer from us at Vancouver Coastal Health is: if you have symptoms of COVID-19 — even very mild symptoms — get tested!

We’ve moved into a new phase for this pandemic, in which broad testing is a critically important criteria for the re-opening of our society and economy. As we increase our interactions with family, friends, neighbours and co-workers, we must be able to identify new cases early, and follow up with their contacts quickly. That’s why anyone in the VCH region with new onset of cold, influenza or COVID-19-like symptoms, however mild, can now be assessed for COVID-19 testing.

Those symptoms include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, painful swallowing, loss of sense of smell, headache,

However, if you have no symptoms we don’t recommend a test. The test is not reliable in people who have no symptoms.

Even if you have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, testing before symptoms start can result in a false negative result, leading to a sense of confidence and contact with others in the community which could lead to transmission of the virus. If you think you’ve been exposed — for example you’ve returned from travel, or had contact with someone who has COVID-19 — we ask that you self-isolate for the incubation period of 14 days. If you get symptoms at any point in that time frame, get tested.

This policy is the same as in other provinces, which is to test anyone with symptoms, and undertake asymptomatic testing only in certain outbreak settings under the direction of a Medical Health Officer. We did not undertake asymptomatic testing of all patients at Richmond Hospital because the outbreak was confined to a single unit only, and therefore it was not necessary to test other patients in the hospital.

Testing is available in all of our VCH communities. In fact, there are testing sites all across the Lower Mainland and all British Columbians have access to all assessment and testing centres across the province.

In Richmond, the testing centre is located at Richmond Hospital and is open to the public with referrals from family doctors or nurse practitioners. It has a separate entrance and exit with improved access for those with mobility concerns. Richmond residents with moderate to severe illness can also be assessed and tested at the Emergency Department. The hospital has protective measures in place and is prepared to safely receive and care for individuals who need COVID-19 testing as well as patients visiting for surgical, ambulatory and community services, diagnostic imaging and lab testing.

As part of our ongoing planning and response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we explored the possibility of setting up an additional testing site in Richmond if it was needed. However, close monitoring of volume levels has indicated the current site has enough capacity to meet the needs of Richmond residents. We will continue to evaluate demand, and if it outpaces capacity at our current Richmond testing site we may set up a second site.

Be kind to ‘real job’ workers Dear Editor,

With businesses slowly starting to reopen, I think it’s important to remember to be kind to workers — especially those employees who tend to be looked down on and told to “get a real job.”

If they hadn’t been working their “real jobs” during this crisis, who would be? I am referring to employees at grocery stores or similar stores that have stayed open, who have put themselves at risk everyday, stocking shelves with essentials and keeping things clean so that your life can continue smoothly while you sit at home collecting CERB. Retail and restaurants are also slowly opening. Keep in mind these employees only work for the company, they have no power over company policy. If you are upset with something, please convey this in a mature way.

These workers, and many more like them, are human, so be kind and you’ll be surprised at the kindness shown to you.

Watch for Mental Health Section in next week’s Richmond News

Mayor Malcolm Brodie has joined the chorus of frustrated Richmondites demanding Vancouver Coastal Health tell them how many COVID-19 cases are in the city.

Brodie has penned a letter to the health authority saying he’d like “city-specific” information to be available to residents and businesses for “general awareness.”

Currently, statistics are given by province and by health region. In the case of the Van-

couver Coastal Health (VCH) region, that includes everything from Richmond to Bella Coola. But, despite being pressed, VCH won’t give numbers by municipality, although early in the pandemic, Richmond’s medical health officer, Dr. Meena Dawar, did publicly state the number of cases.

A VCH spokesperson explained it’s a provincial policy to not give out city-specific numbers of cases for privacy reasons and so people don’t feel overly confident if the number is low. About a month ago, Dawar told the Richmond News that releasing the number would give people “false assurance” about the current pandemic.

But Coun. Chak Au said he would like more information in general to come directly from the health authority — instead of hearing about it in the media first.

However, in its statement, VCH said Dawar works closely with the city and other organizations and businesses “to support our collective response to COVID-19.”

He pointed out that the Richmond Hospital COVID-19 outbreak, the death of Warlito Valdez and the cluster of cases at Austin Harris Residences facility were all reported in the media before council was informed of them.

“Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Dawar has provided regular, proactive support and timely updates to the City of Richmond council, city administration and on the Richmond COVID-19 Community Task Force,” read the VCH statement.

Nor was an explanation given as to why plans for a testing site at Thompson Community Centre were shut down.

Without information, he questioned how council can make informed decisions.

VCH also stated they value their “strong relationship” with Richmond and plan to continue to give regular support and timely updates during the pandemic.

Man apologizes for racial slur at Garry Point Park A man who allegedly hurled racial slurs at two women of Chinese descent at Garry Point Park last Friday has apologized and the complainant doesn’t want to pursue the issue through the courts, according to the Richmond RCMP.

The man wrote a letter to apologize to the community of Richmond and wanted the police to communicate it on his behalf.

“I want to make this right between

our two cultures,” the letter of apology reads, according to Supt. Will Ng, officer in charge of the Richmond RCMP. Ng added the man is First Nations.

The complainant, Clara Kan, has not made a written statement to the police and, while she has met several times with them, she has indicated she doesn’t want to pursue the matter and accepted the apology, said Ng.

A description of the incident was posted on social media, with claims that the police didn’t take the incident seriously and an attending officer told them that, because the license plate wasn’t from Richmond, it wouldn’t be investigated in Richmond.

Ng refuted these claims.

The apology letter from the man reads in part: “I’m asking you and your commu-

nity for forgiveness for the verbal abuse on May 8, 2020. ...Hate breeds hate, and during these times we need to be more loving and understanding. In closing, I humbly ask you and your culture for forgiveness and to give me another chance.”

Stand against racism

The City of Richmond endorsed a statement against racism, put forward by Coun. Chak Au, at Tues-

day’s committee meeting. It reads that the city doesn’t “condone or tolerate racist behavior in any form.”

There has been a rise in racist incidents around the Lower Mainland in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement continues “Racial and discriminatory responses and actions have no place in Richmond.

They have no place in our society.”

Richmond RCMP is investigating a crash that sent one person to hospital with serious injuries.

Mounties said speed is being considered as a factor in the single-vehicle collision, which happened shortly before 10 p.m. on May 6 at the intersection of Knight Street and Westminster Highway.

The vehicle — a grey, two-door Mini Cooper — was travelling southbound on Knight Street, when it allegedly ran a red light and crashed into a street light, according to Richmond RCMP.

A witness at the scene, who was facing southbound and stopped at a red light, told RCMP she saw the Mini Cooper approaching from behind her “at a high rate of speed,” and that she observed the Mini Cooper suddenly swerve “in what she believed was an effort to avoid crashing into her,” before allegedly running the red light and crashing into the street light, according to Mounties.

“The lone male occupant was pinned in the vehicle and multiple bystanders rendered assistance to him until (emergency health services) and fire arrived on scene,” reads the statement.

The man was taken to hospital with serious

injuries, but he has since been discharged.

Multiple witnesses provided statements to responding officers.

Richmond RCMP are asking that any witnesses to the collision — including those who may have observed events leading up to it or who may have dash-cam footage — to contact them at 604-278-1212 and reference file number 2020-12253.

RCMP ramp up traffic enforcement Richmond RCMP say they have caught a driver going 143 km/h in an 80 km zone.

Mounties said the excessive speeding was “unacceptable at any time, any place, pandemic or otherwise,” noting the result of that type of speed is “instant impoundment.”

And according to B.C. RCMP, this type of violation isn’t uncommon during COVID-19.

While there has been a “significant drop” in traffic volumes since COVID-19 restrictions were implemented, police across the province have reported an increase in the number of excessive speeding violations, said Supt.

The B.C. RCMP announced Friday they would return to pre-COVID-19 enforcement levels ahead of the May long weekend. Over that weekend, police impounded nearly 150 vehicles across B.C. for excessive speeding.

On average, 114 people in B.C. die each year in crashes that involve high-risk driving.

Man suspected in 15 arson cases

Richmond RCMP is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a series of arsons that took place between July 2019 and March of this year.

A possible suspect was seen in the area of one of the fires, and RCMP is now releasing a composite sketch of the individual in the hopes of identifying him.

Initially, eight arson incidents were identified by RCMP in April, spanning from late March 2020 to April 2020. Mounties have since identified seven more cases as part of that series fires.

A shelter with self-isolation measures in place for Richmond’s homeless population – along with health and personal support – will open at the former Minoru Place Activity Centre on Tuesday.

However, the lease is only until mid-August.

The Emergency Response Centre (ERC) will operate 24/7 and is a part of the provincial COVID-19 strategy to allow people, including those without permanent homes, to remain healthy and safe during the pandemic.

It will house up to 45 people at any one time, however, entry will be done gradually, for example, five people per day.

The ERC is not a drop-in centre, and those coming there will need a referral from Vancouver Coastal Health, other health-care providers or the RCMP. The ERC is funded by BC Housing with Turning Point Recovery Society is contracted to operate it.

The city is providing the space for the ERC while VCH is responsible for health-related services and referrals.

Anyone at the ERC with COVID-19 symptoms will be tested and sent to hotel rooms or the hospital while waiting for test results.

While the location is not close to residences, the city is advising nearby properties of the centre, as a courtesy.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines during the current COVID-19 pandemic, Club Pilates at Ironwood will be incorporating special measures to help keep its members safe.

Each of the reformers will be placed six feet apart.

That pretty much sums up the philosophy behind exercising the Pilates way, which is coming to the Coppersmith Corner Shopping Centre at Ironwood with the opening in early June of a brand new Club Pilates studio.

Located between Nando’s and Mark’s Work Warehouse, it covers 2,000 square feet and is equipped with 12 Pilates reformers - specialized workout machines which incorporate flexibility and resistance exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, who created the exercise format around the conclusion of the Second World War. He used his experience working with injured soldiers to help them regain their mobility.

In the 1950s and ‘60s, the Pilates method gained a following with celebrities and athletes of the era, and it has continued to grow in popularity to this day.

Club Pilates started in San Diego in 2007, California, as an affordable format for customers.

Today, Club Pilates has expanded to 600 franchised locations across the U.S. with nine in Canada, and others across the globe.

And when classes do start, the studio will run at half capacity.

“We’ll have just six members per class, one person on every other reformer, keeping us well within the social distancing guidelines,” Baxter said. “Everyone will be at least 12 feet apart.”

There will also be a half-hour break between classes so studio staff can thoroughly clean and disinfect the equipment before a new class begins. And those incoming customers will then switch to the reformers not used by the previous class.

To help customers ease into the Pilates format, there are virtual exercises posted on the Club Pilates website which can be performed without a reformer machine - all you need is a mat and floorspace.

And the Ironwood studio will celebrate its soft opening in the first week of June with free introductory classes. From June 8, regular classes for signed-up members begin, but will also feature some free sessions throughout the week.

Harold Cross, who passed away last week.

“Mr. Cross was the gentlest, sweetest soul.

He took such good care of his wife and he never had a bad word to say about anyone.”

Suffice to say, Richmond’s Harold Cross will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him during his 98 years, not least Cherie Dubois, one of the first hotel employees to meet Cross in 1986 and who continued serving him each week into 2020 at the restaurant named after him.

Cross, who passed away on May 15, was such a popular figure at the old Wayfaring Tree at the Richmond Inn on Westminster Highway that the hotel — now the Sheraton Vancouver Airport — honoured their favourite customer while re-branding in 2009.

And so it was that Cross walked into Harold’s Bistro (now Harold’s Kitchen and Bar) for lunch every day, where he delighted staff and customers alike with his charm.

“He took such pride in having the restaurant named after him and his kindness made him so well-loved,” said Dubois on Facebook.

“Guests would often approach Mr. Cross and he was always up for a chat. If a group was celebrating a birthday, he would visit their table to offer his best wishes. Youth sports teams who were staying in-house

would drop by his special table to show off their medals after a big win.”

Cross retired to Richmond in 1986 with his wife Jeanne and lunch outings quickly became a daily ritual for the couple.

Jeanne passed away in 2006, but Cross continued his daily visits up to and including the restaurant’s re-branding in 2009.

“His absence will be felt deeply by our associates and guests and we will miss his friendly laugh and warm smile every day,” said Steve Veinot, general manager at the hotel.

“His memory will live on in our restaurant name...Every year we celebrate Harold’s birthday on July 24, and we’ll continue this tradition...”

Former News reporter Michelle Hopkins interviewed Cross a few times and remembers him fondly.

“I was fortunate enough to enjoy a few lunches with this lovely man. He was engaging, funny and very sweet. I offer my condolences to his family.”

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the family of Harvey Haverstock announce his peaceful passing on May 12, 2020.

Harvey was born January 22, 1940, in Melville, SK, to loving parents, Henry and Rheta (Knuckey) Haverstock. They moved to Richmond in 1954, where to this day was home. Graduating from Richmond High was the highlight of his school years, and Harvey was proud that his two children also graduated from Richmond High.

Harvey enjoyed a long career with CPAir and Canadian Airlines. His last 15 years of work were with Computer Services, where he traveled to many parts of the world and loved every experience. However, his favorite vacation spot was Waikiki, Hawaii.

Harvey was the most forgiving, non−critical person; he was kind, gentle, and loved by all who knew him.

Harv always put others first and did everything possible to help others. He will be remembered for his passion for cutting grass, washing cars, and solely decorating the family Christmas tree − a tradition that started when he was 15 years old. He loved his city, his neighbours, and neighbourhood.

He loved hockey and never gave up hope for his Canucks to win the Stanley Cup. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marlene Walton; and sister−in−law, Alice Haverstock. Harvey leaves his cherished, beloved wife, Heidi, who was his best friend of almost 54 years. Harvey is also survived by his two children, Todd (Yvonne) and Tania (Chris), who were his pride and joy; and his four loved grandchildren, Nathan, Sam, Aimee, and Sage. He also leaves behind his brother, Gerry; brother−in−law, Bud; and brother−in−law and sister−in−law, Erich and Elsie Penner. He has countless friends, cousins, nephews, and nieces that he deeply loved.

We will be forever grateful for the support and care we have received from our family and friends. We want to pay tribute to the pastoral team (Chris, Rachel, and Deb) and our church family "Church on Five" who were always ready to help and encourage. Our homegroup was amazing.
