Richmond is a long way from Minneapolis — not just physically, but in every sense.

We don’t have police killing people on the street. We don’t have flaming racial divides. We don’t have the same level of crippling economic disparity or segregated communities.

After all, when it comes to anti-Black racism, Canada was the end of the underground railroad. The land of freedom for slaves escaping the southern states. So, really, what’s this all got to do with us — apart from affording a self-congratulatory opportunity to look south of the border with a sense of arrogance and disgust?

Well, turns out La Toya Barrington thinks it has lots to do with us.

On the steps of the art gallery in downtown Vancouver as a part of the anti-racism protests in response to the recent death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, Barrington told of years of being subjected to racists insults, being called the n-word, being asked, “How do I know your hands are clean when your skin is brown?”

And, no, those ignorant comments

were not hurled by one of those idiotic Americans we enjoy feeling superior to.

Rather, that was life here in Richmond.

And it hurt.

I don’t know Barrington, but I remember her from a few years back at a Richmond Chamber of Commerce business awards gala. Her company, Go2Girl, was nominated in the small business category. I can’t say I remember a lot of nominees at these events, but Barrington’s effusive spirit (not to mention colourful style) was hard to forget.

What also stood out was her sense of compassion, both for her clients and coworkers, and pride in her work.

Who would have thought she would be plagued with anxiety and wondering who she could have been had she not been subjected to those racist taunts.

“All that stuff (growing up) still affects me today. I’m not the person I could have been,” she told our reporter.

So, when I heard Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, saying the difference between the U.S. and Canada is like “night and day” when it comes to racism, I have to wonder how he would even know. Has he been asked how people would know if his hands are clean because of the colour of his skin?

There is nothing like lived experience; if you don’t have that, at least recog-

nize you’re not the authority.

To simply dismiss anti-Black racism as an American thing is to dismiss the very real and painful experiences of many Black Canadians.

That said, I also take note of Barrington’s comment, “but I am grateful to be Canadian. I really think life would be different for me growing up (as a Black woman) in the States.”

I guess the question now is not how bad is it, but how do we change?

The image of the Minneapolis police station engulfed in flames was a powerful symbol — almost akin of the storming of the Bastilles in 1789.

However, the “storming” marked the start of the French Revolution which overthrew the monarchy and established France as a republic.

I don’t see a revolution coming. This pattern of police brutality followed by outrage, followed by more police brutality has almost become routine.

What I could see, and many are calling for, is a divestment from police forces and more investment into housing, addiction support and other social programs.

No one is saying we don’t need police, but to put more resources into preventing the need for them seems to me like a no-brainer.

The pace of news is unprecedented as we face the COVID-19 pandemic together.

Law suits won’t Tax dodgers are taking the biscuit tackle racism Dear Editor,

reconciliation.

In a time of rising race-related hate crimes against those of Chinese and Asian descent, I thank the Richmond News for a phone interview last week.

When I spoke to reporter Nono Shen, my response was not directly about whether I support the Global News story. So, I am writing this so the public will not come to a wrong conclusion.

After long years of working on reconciling some minority history in B.C., I find merely condemning racism will not resolve a deep-rooted problem that began with Canada’s long legislated discrimination against the Chinese and then against other minorities.

Until we understand and continue the effort to reconcile such history, racism will simply lay dormant until some incident like COVID-19 triggers it again.

So at the outset, I do not believe just condemning or suing a news agency is constructive towards

What I did share with Nono is the fact that “Chinese” here actually came from many places apart from China. Together with the diversity from newcomers to multi-generational “Chinese”, we are far from homogenous, both in dialect, culture, history and above all, opinions and attitudes towards the 70-year-old communist regime in China.

The above diversity results in a lot of confusion about the identity and allegiance of the Chinese, even among the Chinese.

The alleged mistranslated quote “every Chinese overseas is a warrior” in the Global report is wrong and rightfully protested.

But the best way to rebuild our community is for neighbours to talk to each other about who we are, and share our dreams for this country.

Every covid cloud has a silver lining

The rudeness and obvious lack of shame didn’t go down well with me, as you can see.

I just walked out of a tasty bakery in the Blundell mall and I’m reeling. Sure, I’m still new in this province. So I’ll need to adapt, I mean this isn’t all that common where I come from, but let me tell you a story...

There is no doubt the COVID-19 pandemic is serious and creates challenges.

Anyway, it dawned on me that there’s scores of restaurants just like that. At what point, Mr. Mayor, is Richmond City going to do something about this?

Turns out, I didn’t have enough cash on me. I asked them why cash only? Why not cards? Cash is dirty after all, and these days, who wants to touch what everyone else touches, right? The lady told me, matter of fact, “Don’t want to pay taxes,” as if I was stupid.

But it also brings out the best in people.

I am age 70 and immune-compromised (MS), so in the high-risk group. I have not been past the front door of my building since early March. I miss going out to dinner to meet up with friends.

To be deeply honest, let me tell you, those extra taxes I pay (because they don’t) should go in my kids university fund, not lining the pockets of those who lack the moral fortitude and backbone to do their part in society.

But I have been getting phone calls from many friends and relatives I might normally only hear from at Christmas.

Our son shops for our groceries. We do regular video chats with our children and grandchildren. I have also had calls checking on my well-being, from the Richmond Seniors’ Centre, the Richmond Centre for Disability and HandyDart.

I’m working 70 hours a week to ensure my kids can go to university and all those cash-only places only need a cursory look at their tax income reports to see that they’re robbing you blind.

Well, sure. I guess I am stupid, after all. I run a business and pay my taxes diligently.

Part of living in a society and being civil, after all, is doing your part. That’s what makes me believe I’m, ah, civilized, if that’s the right word. Contributing member, maybe?

The other day I fell and needed help.

The EMTs were quick, friendly and efficient, and had me back in my wheelchair in no time. So while, in some ways, COVID-19 is causing distancing, in another, it is showing who actually cares.

What’s the value of virtue if sin goes unpunished?

There is always a silver lining.

RCMP seek witnesses to Police watchdog probing alleged racial assault death after shoplifting arrest man had already left the area.

Richmond RCMP are seeking witnesses to an alleged assault, involving racial slurs, that took place near the Ironwood area earlier this month.

According to RCMP, police arrived on scene at Steveston Highway and No. 5 Road at 2:08 p.m. May 17, following reports of an assault in progress.

The complainant told Mounties that a blue BMW had pulled up beside his parked vehicle at 10820 No. 5 Road. The man inside the BMW then allegedly started yelling racial slurs.

The complainant got back inside his car and locked his doors, at which point the man allegedly pounded on the front passenger side window of the complainant’s car while continuing to make racist comments.

According to RCMP, the complainant then decided to leave his car and seek refuge in a local business, but the man followed him.

That’s when the alleged assault occurred, according to RCMP, who said that while they responded to the scene within minutes, the

Richmond RCMP say they canvassed the area for video surveillance, and, in the following days after the alleged assault, were able to identify and arrest a suspect.

However, the complainant said there were other people in the area who witnessed the incident, and RCMP are now hoping to speak with those witnesses.

“An incident like this affects everyone in our community,” said Cpl. Adriana Peralta.

“While various evidence has been gathered, we want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed it... and we are asking anyone who hasn’t already to come forward.”

RCMP said that “all racially motivated incidents will be thoroughly investigated, and that hate-motivated crimes are treated seriously.”

According to RCMP, the man in question is described as Caucasian, 5’8 tall with a fairly athletic build, very short hair that’s greying on the side, and spoke with an accent. He was wearing a blue dress shirt, grey vest and black dress slacks.

The province’s police watchdog has been called in after a man died during an arrest for shoplifting last Thursday night.

B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) confirmed to the Richmond News that paramedics were dispatched to the Canadian Tire in Ironwood around 7:40 p.m., where they cared for one patient suffering from cardiac arrest before transporting that person to hospital in serious condition.

According to the RCMP, who have since notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of the incident, Mounties were called to the business on Steveston Highway around 7:30 p.m. last Thursday to “assist a Loss Prevention Officer who was struggling with a shoplifting suspect.”

“Frontline officers arrived on scene to assist and to arrest the man,” said the RCMP. “Shortly thereafter, the members determined that man was in medical distress, unresponsive, and started first aid measures.”

The IIO says the man was handcuffed by

police after they arrived at the scene.

Officers began performing CPR and called BCEHS, who then provided further medical assistance for approximately 45 minutes before taking the man to hospital, according to the IIO. The man was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital, according to the police watchdog, which will now investigate to determine what, if any, role “the officers’ actions or inactions may have played into the death of the male.”

The BC Coroners Service has also been called in, and will “investigate to determine how, where, when and by what means (the man) came to his death,” according to the IIO. RCMP say no further information will be released as the matter is now under investigation by the IIO. Anyone who saw, heard or recorded the incident is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line toll free at 1-855-446-8477.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death.

There’s unlikely to be a repeat of last summer’s controversial issue of farm produce signs on the side of Richmond’s roads.

Veteran Richmond farmer Bill Zylmans ended up in court last fall after the City of Richmond took umbrage with his giant strawberry sign that had been out on city land during the berry season at Westminster Highway and Knight Street for decades.

Zylmans ultimately won his battle in court, after a judge ruled in his favour.

But the wrangle compelled city council to examine the problem and, last week, they approved a staff report on agricultural signage, which included clarification on permitted, temporary “community special event signs.”

Such signs, says the report, could include the seasonal advertising of Richmond farm produce, such as Zylmans’ strawberries.

In addition, the city will allow such signs on its property, with its permission, as long as an application has been submitted.

There is no cost for the application and all locations are reviewed by staff to ensure that the placement of the sign does not interfere with infrastructure or intersection sight lines.

Signs such as Bill Zylmans’ have been approved by city council, as long as a free application form is filled in.

File photo For this year, the city has approved two community special event signs for Zylmans’ W & A Farms, to be installed for June, during the berry season.

One sign will be visible southbound on Knight Street and the second sign will be located eastbound on Westminster Highway.

The signs, says the report, are placed on city land and will not require provincial approval.

“These proposed signs are in full compliance with the provisions of community event signs permitted in the Sign Bylaw. As noted earlier, community event signs do not require a permit fee, are permitted on city property for a temporary period and can be renewed,” reads the report.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has expanded its so-called snitch line to any tips and leads about suspected fraud in the federal government’s COVID-19 emergency aid programs.

An update to the webpage for the agency’s National Leads Program Monday, states that the CRA is now accepting information about the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB) and the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS).

“If you suspect a potential misuse of the COVID-19 emergency benefits and programs, the National Leads Centre is currently accepting leads on these programs,” reads CRA’s website.

The agency, which has records of everyone who has received a CERB or CESB payment, says it is also “verifying to make sure the payments were correctly allocated,” and is conducting “various pre-payment verifications and post-payment reviews” for the CEWS.

Richmond Hospital is in the process of bringing back elective surgeries with no one losing their place on waitlists.

About 100 surgeries were cancelled every week during Phase 1 of the pandemic to make room for potential COVID-19 cases, explained Dr. Dean Chittock with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH). In April, only about 55 urgent or emergency surgeries were taking place per week in two operating rooms.

Areas of the hospital were repurposed and staff reassigned to prepare for a surge of COVID-19 cases, but now in the recovery phase, staff and beds are being redeployed for upcoming surgeries.

Chittock said they are walking a “fine line” between bringing back surgeries, taking care of community cases and preparing for a second wave.

The goal, however, is to have all operating rooms functioning within the next few weeks, Chittock said, and then to extend operating room hours in July to make up for lost surgeries and bring down waitlists.

Schools re-open with low attendance After 11 weeks of schools largely shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students were back in Richmond classrooms on Monday, but in greatly reduced numbers.

About 1,550 elementary students were in school on Tuesday while the district was expecting about 1,800 based on a survey that went out to parents last week. This was up from Monday by about 100 students.

In secondary schools across the district, there were about 350 students

on Tuesday, down from an expected number of 550.

There were fewer secondary students on Tuesday than Monday, but the school district expects the numbers to fluctuate from day to day depending on which class tutorials are being held, according to district spokesperson David Sadler.

The City of Richmond is considering ordering two new fire trucks to the tune of $2.4 million.

A request for proposals was issued by the city for four new trucks, but Richmond Fire-Rescue asked council to approve only two, a quint — a truck with

The quint being replaced is 19 years old and has 282,000 kilometres on it. The city has paid $130,000 in repairs to the truck in the past year.

The engine will be a new purchase and will accommodate 36 new firefighters being hired to work for the fire department. Twentyfour new firefighters have been hired so far.

The fire department also wanted to replace its hazardous materials truck, which is 21 years old with 136,000 kilometres; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and expected revenue shortfalls, this was dropped from the request to council.

The current hazmat truck can be maintained for another two years, according to the city.

However, it has old tech-

nology, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams, that’s “not in alignment with operational needs of today.”

Council approved the purchase at its Monday committee meeting.

The money will come from the fire vehicle budget, which has $3.5 million for four new vehicles.

There is another $1 million in unallocated reserves in the budget.

La Toya Barrington had no plans to attend the racial justice protest Sunday evening in Downtown Vancouver over the recent death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.

In fact, the Richmond mom-of-three didn’t even know there was a protest until she saw a post on a wall while walking through Vancouver.

So there was no one more shocked than Barrington when, about two hours later, she stood on the steps of Vancouver Art Gallery and relived through a microphone to 3,500 people a lifetime of racial abuse as a Black woman growing up in Richmond.

“I thought I should go check it out and the plan was to just stay on the outside,” laughed Barrington, who actually suffers from anxiety and wouldn’t normally speak publicly.

“I didn’t really want to be around people, let alone a big crowd. But listening to other people’s stories, I just felt compelled to tell mine.

“I spent an hour and a half waiting to speak and I kept changing my mind. I had to keep psyching myself up.

“Reading out loud to thousands of people all these negative experiences, it made me angry that I had lived them,” she told the Richmond News, adding that some of the racial abuse was at the hands of former partners.

Wilson said that, what was “once done to us by the police in the dark is now done for all to see.

Later on that evening, Barrington said she felt empowered and then started receiving messages from people that she went to high school with.

“Is the killing of Black people being normalized? The death of George Floyd has been a call for action to the world. We all need to stand together to fight racism and injustice.

“Most of these negative experiences (related to race) were in Richmond,” she said.

“Thank you to the responders against racism directed toward the Black community and all communities, whoever and wherever you are. Non-violence is the key, as spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

“Some people from high school have contacted me to apologize for not stepping up and doing more. That made me very emotional that those people are finally coming forward.

“All that stuff (growing up) still affects me today. I’m not the person I could have been.”

As far as the violent unrest in the U.S. is concerned — with many cities under curfew amid protests over Floyd’s death — Barrington said she understands why some people have resorted to violence.

“They’ve tried (in the past) to do things peacefully. I don’t agree with (the violence) but I understand it,” she said.

Another prominent member of the Black community in Richmond, Mary Wilson — the founder/organizer of the city’s Black History Month (BHM) events — told the News how she grew up in the U.S. with “too many stories like that of George Floyd.”

“Stories of racism, injustice, inequality, police injustice towards my community,” said Wilson.

“No matter how many times it happens, nothing prepares me for the reality of the situation. To turn on the TV and watch George

Barrington, meanwhile, despite having a bad experience at the hands of police due to her race, knows she can’t put all law enforcement officers into the same category.

“I still think there are some good and some bad (police officers), they’re not all in the same,” she said.

“But I am grateful to be Canadian. I really think life would be different for me growing up (as a Black woman) in the States.”

The officers connected to the death of Floyd last week have been fired, with one being charged with second-degree murder and the others with aiding and abetting.

As well as Sunday evening’s protest in Vancouver, Canadians have been protesting the recent death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a Black Toronto woman whose mother says the 29-year-old woman was fatally pushed off a balcony by authorities.

Vancouver’s gathering was peaceful, with some attendees wearing face masks.

Vancouver police said there were no arrests related to the protest.

Meng lovers, critics converge at court

Both sides of the divide on the Meng Wanzhou case appeared outside BC Supreme Court last week, as the Huawei CFO attempted once more to have her extradition to the U.S. quashed.

The COVID-19 pandemic didn’t stop Meng Wanzhou’s detractors and supporters from showing up outside the B.C. Supreme Court on Wednesday morning.

“I hope she can (go) back home as soon as possible. And hopefully, the relationship between Canada and China won’t be affected by today’s court ruling,” said Hu.

Minutes before the court decided that the Huawei CFO’s U.S. extradition hearing process would be allowed to proceed, both pro-democracy and Meng supporters waved signs to express their opinions.

Meanwhile, the group of pro-democracy supporters focused its attention on the two Canadians — Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig — jailed in China in apparent retaliation for Meng’s arrest.

A judge ruled that Crown prosecutors met the requirement of double criminality, meaning that the conduct Meng is accused of in the U.S. — which includes fraud, money laundering and violating U.S. trade sanctions against Iran — has been deemed as an arrestable offence had it happened in Canada.

Kang Zhang, 70, said he doesn’t have any “hatred” or “resentment” towards Huawei, but he chose to come out today in the name of justice.

Hu said he felt regret after hearing the news that Meng couldn’t be set free this time.

Zhang said he also felt compelled to show his feelings after witnessing a group of actors who were paid to come out and support Meng at her last extradition hearing.

A Richmond-based group is taking Global News to task over an April 30 story which it claims “unfairly portrays” many ChineseCanadians.

The report, titled “United Front groups in Canada helped Beijing stockpile coronavirus safety supplies,” by Sam Cooper, details Beijing’s efforts to import personal protective gear to China from Canada and around the globe in the early days of COVID-19.

According to the report, groups connected to the United Front Work Department (UFWD) — an organization that helps promote, and spread the influence of, the Chinese Communist Party — issued a call to buy N95 masks to ship back to China.

Efforts in Vancouver were organized through the consulate and business associations with official ties to the UFWD, according to Cooper’s report.

“The article paints a bad image of a whole

group of Chinese-Canadians,” according to Ivan Pak, president of Maple Leafs Anti-Racism Actions Association (MLARA), the group protesting the news story.

“There are Chinese-Canadians who don’t have any ties to China or the government, but now they are being seen as secret agents.

And their loyalty to Canada is in question,” said Pak, who ran in Richmond Centre for the People’s Party of Canada in the last federal election. Pak also ran for school trustee with the Parents’ Slate in 2018.

Pak said that the group fully respects freedom of the press and reporters’ efforts to expose a foreign entity’s influence in Canada, but the report contains “inaccuracy” that targeted Chinese-Canadians.

For example, Pak said, a caption in the article, quoting a sentence from Xinhua, a Chinese state-run media agency, reading “every overseas Chinese is a warrior” is a “mistranslation.”

The long-awaited opening of the B.C. spot prawn season comes Thursday, with the first hauls expected to be on sale on Steveston docks Friday.

A delayed opening this year for the local spot prawn season due to the pandemic could mean some pent-up demand for the Steveston summer staple.

His operation will have public cash sales at the dock — with his team all geared up with PPE — as well as deliveries. Customers can also pre-pay online, as of tonight, on their website at Stevestonspotprawns.com.

Online learning cut irks parents Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM Some Richmond parents said they feel their children don’t matter after the provincial government cut $12 million from its budget to the Independent Distributed Learning (IDL) system.

“The timing of the cut is cruel and unfair because many families are facing financial instability due to COVID-19...and now we are being asked to make up the shortfall. The cut impacts families that are already disadvantaged,” said Karima Gardizi, a Richmond mother whose children attend an IDL school.

Children who attend IDL are often victims of bullying or are learners with extra needs, added Gardizi. And many of the families she knows are single-income households as one parent must stay home to help school the children.

The funding change was announced in May and will come into effect on July 1.

“(But) even with this rate change, total independent DL school funding is expected to increase by four per cent next year to a record high of $84.2 million,” reads the statement.

“With the current financial strains on people, some parents can’t afford these fees anymore. These children might be forced back to the public schools where they don’t fit in in the first place. They won’t be able to make it in the long run,” said Gardizi.

Chandra Lee, a mother of two, said the funding reduction will prevent her from providing hands-on learning to her children.

“My kid with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) needs some activities, but I won’t be able to afford these activities due to the cut. It’s prejudiced against kids who learn slower and need to learn differently,” said Lee. Parents don’t need to pay tuition for most IDL schools, but they are going to pay out of pocket for many other things, such as textbooks and other learning supplies, said Gardizi, adding a few IDL schools might have to charge tuition after the cut.

“Children are most affected by this situation.

We all have the right to educate our children the way we think it’s the right way for them,” added Gardizi.

Ken Yoshihara’s family wasn’t about to let a pandemic stop them from celebrating a birthday milestone.

Ken’s daughter, Karen Schindel, said that she and her mother, Hiroko Yoshihara, organized a surprise parade — what turned out to be a cavalcade of about 50 cars filled with friends and family — Saturday to celebrate her father’s 80th.

“He deserved to be treated like a king for a day,” said Schindel.

Both Ken and Hiroko are active members of the Steveston Buddhist Temple, said Schindel. Her father, who grew up in Richmond, was a “talented gymnast” at Richmond high school. Ken also has a passion for hockey, said Schindel, and was playing twice a week with the Richmond Ojisans before things came to a halt due to COVID-19.

Schindel said her mother Hiroko helped her get in touch with the temple’s reverend and Ken’s cousin — the two play on the same hockey team — to organize the surprise.

“I made a Facebook group, talked to my parents’ neighbours to let a few of them know, made phone calls…it was pretty busy,” said Karen.

Schindel said she managed to keep the surprise from her dad by telling a “white lie,” explaining that she told her father that he needed to stay downstairs because her daughters — Ken’s granddaughters — were planning something for him.

But instead, about 50 cars lined the block, honking horns and playing music, all to wish Ken a happy 80th, causing “quite the scene with neighbours,” said Schindel. Many of Ken’s teammates arrived with hockey jerseys and sticks attached to their vehicles. Ken himself wore a crown and held a golden hockey stick, waving as friends and family drove by.

“It was very heartwarming to see the joy on his face and hear him laughing with friends and family,” said Schindel, adding that it was “so touching” to see everyone get together for her dad.

“I believe that it was a testament to how they feel about him.

“I also think it was so nice to see people meet and greet each other, that they haven’t seen in a very long time due to COVID-19.

“I had so many emails, texts and phones calls (from people) to say how happy my dad looked, and that they were so glad to be a part of something so positive.

“With everything going in the world today, I wasn’t going to let it ‘rain on his parade.’”

“Of course I was happy when I heard about the supplement funding for seniors,” said Luk, adding that it was “the topic” between him and seniors when it was announced on the news.

However, the 78-year-old resident was disappointed to learn the government has yet to set a specific date of when the financial aid

would arrive.

“We thought the supplement would come earlier, but what can we do but wait,” said Luk. “These few months, everything has gone up in price whether it is groceries, food that we order and deliveries.”

The financial aid, said Luk, on top of his monthly OAS pension and GIS, will greatly alleviate his stress on additional spending for cleaning supplies and some masks due to COVID-19.

The payments will automatically be deposited into the accounts of those eligible for the benefit, and should be available in the coming weeks, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said May 12.

B.C. has also announced a series of temporary financial measures for vulnerable people during the pandemic, including a $300 monthly crisis supplement, from April to June, for low-income seniors. The hay rides, massive garage sale and displays from South Arm United Church’s annual fair will not be returning in September.

This will be the first time in the history of the event — held on the third Saturday in September for the past six decades — will not fill the church and grounds with people and laughter.

Victoria Warfield, the church’s fundraising chair, said the decision to cancel the fair was made during a virtual meeting in order to protect the health and safety of the community.

“Everyone usually works through the summer for (the fair), but right now we can’t even get into the building,” said Warfield, explaining the church will remain closed for now due to the ban on gatherings of more than 50 people.

“Last year we had a good year which was wonderful, and it’s just

Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) is celebrating Seniors Week with the launch of their new caregiving program.

RCRG has launched two videos introducing their new Richmond Family Friend Caregiver Hub — a resource program for caregivers — in both the English and Chinese languages.

The hub was established with the help of the provincial government, United Way and Family Caregivers of B.C. to give resources, information and support for anyone providing voluntary and unpaid care to an older adult living in Richmond.

Caregivers can now access services through the program including individual coaching, peer support and information and referral assistance.

Videos focusing on mindfulness and meditation, art therapy and how to set up virtual meetings will be posted on their new website in late June.

Water poverty is one of the most pressing crises in the world, and one local organization is aiming to help reverse it.

Acts for Water, a Richmond-based organization, is helping kids and families in Ugandan villages get access to clean water while teaching them how to make soap to combat COVID-19.

The group, which has a team working in Uganda, had been building hand-washing stations, doing soap distribution, teaching handwashing and social distancing in

March.

That was until COVID-19 hit.

The project was put on hold until government restrictions loosened mid-May, and the team was able to head back to the villages to help finish building clean and safe latrines at the schools for the kids, according to Jeff Golby, CEO of Acts for Water.

Acts for Water held an “exercise of empathy” last summer in Steveston to share knowledge about the lack of clean water in Uganda. Funds raised during the event went towards the current project in Uganda.

“We’re not just handing out soap but giving people the skills and ability to defend themselves against these illnesses and to ultimately thrive.”

Irritation and damage to your gum tissue may result from micro organisms harbored in your dentures’ old acrylic, or ill fitting dentures. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove unhealthy organisms contributing to the infl ammation and edema (swelling).

Tissue conditioners (temporary soft lining material) are placed on the tissue fitting surface of your dentures to provide a clean positive adaptation to your gum tissues.

Healing begins and your tissues are reassessed in a week to confirm the progress of healing. Second and/or third tissue conditioner may need to be applied before continuing the construction of new dentures. Healthy, pink, hard tissues, provide the important base foundation required for a successful denture. New dentures promote a healthy, clean, f accurate fitting surface for many years. Hi Gene, The first place we would look is the toilet. Is something lodged inside it? A child’s toy, a bottle cap? It will still work in many cases, but not work very well. Removing the toilet, and inspecting the trap will usually confirm if there is an obstruction.

The next thing we would look for is a plugged plumbing vent. In order for the drains in your home to work, they need to be able to draw in air. If you look on top of your roof, you will most likely see one or more black or grey pipes in the vicinity of your bathroom or kitchen. These are your plumbing vents. If they become plugged, that hollow thumping noise you hear coming from your bathtub, is air being sucked in through the bathtub overflow. This is a good indicator that you’ve got a plugged plumbing vent. In single family homes, auguring the plumbing vents down from your roof, will usually clear this up. In multi-unit complexes, we follow this up with hi-pressure water flushing. Your toilet will work like a charm, (and without the added sound effects).

Summer is approaching, and it is important to protect our skin from harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure can cause sunburn, while frequent and prolonged exposure over many years can also increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Regardless of the pigmentation of your skin, UV rays can penetrate our outer skin layer where they can damage skin cells. UV rays are at peak from 11am to 4pm so any outdoor physical activities during these hours should be minimized; otherwise consider protective measures. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can be magnified by bouncing off surfaces such as water, snow and sand and concrete. When selecting a sunscreen, look for products that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. For any sunscreen, you should be reapplying every two hours, as well as after sweating or swimming.

The amount used should be sufficient to cover all exposed body areas.

There is no single method that ensures full protection. Therefore, in addition to using broad spectrum SPF sunscreen, you should still seek shade, put on sunglasses and wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing. Furthermore, sunlight can cause a reaction when you take certain oral or topical medications. These substances sensitize the skin to sunlight creating phototoxic or photoallergic reactions. Drugs that cause photosensitivity include antibiotics (such as tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, or ciprofloxacin), sulfa based medications, diuretics (including furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), acne treatments (such as isotretinoin), heart medications (such as amiodarone). This is how Farah Meralli, social studies and humanities teacher at Burnett secondary, described Maggie Xiong, a graduating student who has received Richmond’s second $80,000 Schulich scholarship this year.

Xiong’s passion for science is what is driving her to go to McGill University this fall.

Meralli explained how Xiong will give countless hours in service to others, arriving first and staying late when help is needed, supporting her peers but always acknowledging those who help her as well.

“It’s her integrity and kindness that earn her respect from her peers and teachers,” Meralli said about the student she’s taught since Grade 8.

The Schulich scholarship is meant for students who are interested in STEM subjects science, technology and math — but also those who are considered innovators.

This interest started from a Grade 9 science fair for which she created a device for blind people using echolocation, Xiong said.

This made her realize that “our world revolves around science — everything has a scientific background,” be that computer coding, the COVID-19 health crisis or the medical world, Xiong explained.

“It’s everywhere,” she added.

Xiong’s goal is eventually to be a medical researcher, but she also plans to study computer science as well this fall, with an interest in creating medical apps.

A group of Richmond Secondary students is calling for donations to help raise $1,000 for girls in Ghana to go to school.

Create Change RHS — formed by Grade 10 student Caleara Mai and 15 other members — was created in partnership with the Create Change Now Foundation to raise money to build a school and to provide school supplies for students in Ghana.

Mai, the leader of the club, felt her luxury of receiving an education in Canada can help close the gap of education inequality overseas.

“I found myself really lucky … I had parents who were focused on providing me and my siblings an education,” said Mai. “Starting a club with my friends and school mates was a way to bring education to people who don’t have the right access to it, while sharing the knowledge that there’s still education inequality in the world.”

In addition, the club is hosting peer-tutoring, editing and translating sessions to help give back to the community.

A Canadian charity is asking for donations of lightly used technology, so that refugee children new to Canada can participate in this year’s summer camp — which has gone online due to COVID-19.

BC Newcomer Camp is asking for donations of tablets or computers so that families who can’t afford or don’t have access to those devices can participate.

The organization has been offering free summer camps to support refugee children as they transition to their new lives in Canada for the past five years.

Another one of Richmond’s summer staples — the Dolphin Classic basketball tournament — has been cancelled due to the pandemic.

More than two weeks after soccer’s Nations Cup was axed for the same reason, the Dolphin Classic organizers announced on their Facebook page Sunday that they had no choice but to cancel for the first time in 35 years.

The tournament, along with the Nations Cup, attracts thousands of top

players and spectators to the courts in Richmond, which takes place at various locations throughout the city in July.

A statement from tournament organizers said that their tournament committee is “regretfully cancelling our annual July event.

“Due to the ongoing challenges of Covid-19 and in accordance with all public health authority directives, we have determined that it’s in the best interest of all involved to cancel our summer hoops tradition this year.

Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project Public Comment Period & Virtual Open Houses FortisBC Holdings Inc. is proposing to expand its existing Tilbury LNG Project, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and production facility located on Tilbury Island, in Delta, British Columbia. As proposed, the Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project would increase the facility’s LNG production capacity by more than 50%, up to 13,700 tonnes of LNG per day for an operational life of at least 40 years. The expansion would allow for a total storage capacity of up to 208,000 cubic metres of LNG and include an additional storage tank and liquefaction facilities.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (the Agency) and British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) have accepted an initial project description for the proposed project, which is subject to both the federal Impact Assessment Act and British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Agency and the EAO are working cooperatively for the initial phase of the project’s review.

The unique circumstances arising from COVID-19 have presented challenges to the usual approaches of undertaking meaningful public engagement and Indigenous consultation. The Agency and the EAO continue to assess the situation with key participants, adjust consultation and engagement activities, and provide flexibility as needed in order to prioritize the health and safety of all Canadians.

Comments Invited As part of the cooperative project review process, the Agency and the EAO are inviting the public and Indigenous groups to review the initial project description and provide feedback related to the proposed project. A summary of the document in English or French is also available on the Agency’s website at canada.ca/iaac.

Comments received will support the Agency and the EAO in the preparation of a joint Summary of Issues and Engagement for the project. Once completed, the joint Summary of Issues and Engagement will be provided to FortisBC Holdings Inc. to inform the next steps in the process.

Comments only need to be submitted once to either the Agency or the EAO to be considered in both the provincial and federal review processes and may be submitted in either official language. Comments can be submitted online by visiting the project home page on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry (reference number 80496), or by visiting the EAO’s website at projects.eao.gov.bc.ca. Comments received by the Agency and the EAO are considered public and will be published online.

The comment period has been extended to 45 days and will take place from June 1st to midnight Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on July 16, 2020.

Virtual Open Houses Due to COVID-19 and the associated physical distancing and self-isolation measures, the Agency and EAO will host virtual open houses on June 18, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. PDT, and June 23, 2020 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. PDT. The virtual open houses will include presentations on the federal and provincial review processes, a presentation by FortisBC Holdings Inc. on the Tilbury Phase 2 LNG Expansion Project, and opportunities to ask questions online or by telephone. Instructions and hyperlinks to join the online meetings will be found on the EAO’s project page website (projects.eao.gov.bc.ca). Participants who prefer to only listen by phone can dial 1-833-968-1918 and use conference ID number 5057416 (June 18) or 6887462 (June 23). The presentations will be recorded and made available online.

Substitution Request In addition, the Government of British Columbia has requested that the conduct of the federal impact assessment process be substituted to the province. This means if federal and provincial assessments are both required, and the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change decides that the provincial process is an appropriate substitute for the federal process, the provincial government would conduct the impact assessment of the project on behalf of the Agency, fulfilling the requirements of both the federal Impact Assessment Act and British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Agency is also seeking comments from the public and Indigenous groups on this request.

Rolling with the COVID-19 punches E-plane work going strong

“We’re able to roll with the punches a little bit better. We don’t have tremendous debt loads or stuff like that either,” he said.

On Monday (June 1) the airline began ramping up some of its operations, with more scheduled flights taking to the air.

In fact, the airline could see some new traffic, which it might not otherwise have seen, said McDougall, as people stay closer to home and travel within B.C. this summer. But, he admits, that won’t replace the tourism-related travel that Harbour Air would typically expect.

“Normally (tourism) is about 30 per cent of what we do from a revenue point of view,” said McDougall.

“It’s very important. It’s really our biggest growth market too, because, I think, the sea planes have become sort of iconic with British

Harbour Air came “virtually to a grinding halt” due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the good news is the Richmond-based airline is flexible in terms of its ability to dial capacity up or down, compared to larger airlines, according to its CEO Greg McDougall.

“It’s obviously hit us very hard not having that (tourism) this summer, and that’s going to have a big effect on everything, but we can dial down and re-jig the company to run with the revenue that it’s going to get.”

Harbour Air cancelled its scheduled flights in late March, grounding its 43 planes, which normally carry passengers around B.C. and

McDougall explained that Harbour Air’s aerospace division has been running “pretty much full speed,” working on various projects including the e-plane.

While there have been some layoffs, the company has also been able to reassign some employees to the project, due to the grounded flights, said McDougall, and is running an entire test flight program and proofing the e-plane’s technology.

He estimates it will still be about two years before the e-plane is certified for commercial use, but the timeline could be sped up slightly due to the pandemic.

“If anything, it will probably be (done) sooner than it would have been without COVID, because of the fact that there’s more focus on it as we’re less distracted, as it were, in terms of people and resources available to actually focus on it,” said McDougall.

This is the message from Richmond News publisher Alvin Chow.

A fun initiative the News launched with local business Herbaland was a mental wellness contest, whereby readers post photos of how they take care of their mental health and are entered to win $250 in Herbaland products.

The world has changed with COVID-19 and businesses have to rethink how they operate.

Those who have pivoted to repurpose themselves, at least temporarily, have had a better chance of surviving. However, other business models don’t allow for the same flexibility, so staying afloat has been a challenge.

“These are all examples of unique and different ways businesses can look at marketing themselves differently. Print ads and basic digital services are just one piece to the marketing mix,” said Akimow. “We should be looking at any and all options, contesting, virtual events, even flyers; there is really nothing we cannot do.”

“COVID-19 has shone a light on holes in business models,” said Rob Akimow, Richmond News director of sales and marketing.

“Some, for example those set up for e-commerce, fared better; others were left out in the cold.”

To support businesses in Phase 2 of the pandemic, with partial re-opening of services allowed by provincial health officers, some Richmond groups have launched websites to help spread the word on what businesses are open and what restrictions they are operating under.

Tourism Richmond, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the City of Richmond have partnered to build a business hub — WeAreRichmondBC.ca. Meanwhile, Richmond City Coun. Chak Au has launched SupportLocalBusiness.ca also to spread the word on the new normal in business.

Akimow acknowledges businesses are hurting, but there are a lot of free and low-budget ways the News can help bring customers back, he stressed.

Before joining LineHopper, Schermer was a substitute teacher with the Vancouver School Board. Although Schermer lost her job due to COVID-19, she feels she can still contribute to her community through LineHopper.

Shopping during the pandemic isn’t easy, and sometimes people have to wait in lines for at least half an hour just to enter the store, explained Changizi.

“We are so grateful because people shared supportive messages with us on Facebook. Some people have taken the time to email us and say ‘thank you so

Uniqlo checks temperatures Uniqlo, the Japanese casual clothing chain, is among a growing list of retail outlets to have implemented temperature checks on customers before allowing them into their stores, including one in Richmond Centre.

A bulletin posted on its website read “all staff will take a daily temperature check and wear personal protective equipment. Customers’ temperatures will also be checked before entry to the store.”

In addition, shoppers, who are allowed to enter, are asked to use hand sanitizer.

Uniqlo isn’t the first store to implement temperature checks on customers. T&T Supermarket, which has two locations in Richmond, and Foody World in north Richmond both announced last month that they will test customers for a fever before allowing them enter their grocery stores.
