Besides, despite dire warnings to not talk to the media, members of the public or anyone else for that matter, did they really think this wasn’t going to get out?

And since it has (on social media well before the Richmond News, by the way), what’s causing the greatest panic is the lack of transparency.

I have no doubt the city has done what it should have in terms of notifying those who may have been exposed. I also trust if you haven’t been called by VCH, you have nothing to worry about.

But trust is the operative word.

We need to trust our governments. We need to know they care more about our health than their reputations. We also need to know they respect our right to be informed. Trying to keep this quiet and refusing to be transparent has only fueled more rumours, heightened anxiety and chipped away at any sense of confidence.

But even if people get spooked and choose to avoid your business in the short term, I have to believe they will soon return, knowing you’re an organization that is transparent and goes beyond the minimum public health requirements.

If you take a look at Vancouver Coastal Health’s website under “Current Public Exposures” you’ll see a list of bars, restaurants, beaches and hotels where addresses, dates and times are listed.

When we asked if the city wasn’t required to inform the public if indeed there was a case, we were directed to VCH protocol regarding public notifications. It reads:

I imagine that’s not always an easy decision. No business wants to be the cause of greater spread, but such a public notice could be devastating. Who wants to dine at a restaurant where a server tested positive for COVID?

Clearly, if public exposure is deemed relatively high, that information has to be made public.

For the last five months during COVID-19, I have done a lot of walking in many Richmond neighbourhoods.

To my dismay, I find that cars rarely slow down when travelling the streets of Richmond.

Many cars are well over the speed limit and pay no attention to marked crosswalks and zoom through.

Many times I have been the deer in the headlights with cars whizzing through the crosswalk, even one occurence with a marked RCMP car with its driver too busy looking at his computer screen.

Dear Editor, Thank you for running the article about my husband, Geoffrey Clay-Smith, who survived childhood polio to have the effects of post polio, 66 years later, causing him to be a quadriplegic, after a fall inside the house.

The information in the article speaks to the after effects of a pandemic that ran amok in the ‘50s, caused by a virus that is largely contained due to a vaccine.

Hopefully, when the COVID-19 vaccine is released, people will enthusiastically participate to wipe this threat from the planet.

I have never seen a comment on this from those in charge but they need to take action.

The article also mentioned Geoffrey’s GoFundMe site. The amount raised, and very gratefully received, has gone towards a wheelchair and some renovations. Unfortunately, it still falls short of the amount for which we were aiming, so anyone who would like to help by donating is welcome to do so.

Moral purists require clarity Today’s moral purists attack early leaders, such as John A. MacDonald, Canada’s founding Prime Minister, and Matthew Begbie, B.C.’s first Chief Justice.

If we are going to remove statues of anyone in history who offends current sensibilities, to be consistent, we must also remove all symbols recognizing all early political leaders, all WWII veterans, the Christian church and everyone else.

Virtually all founding leaders of western democracies were white males. They restricted voting and property rights to white male property owners. “Clearly” they were racist, classist and anti-woman. Expunge them all!

All Allied forces in WWII were allies of the Stalinist Russians.

Stalin was a repressive and murderous leader. “Clearly,” our troops, being allied with Stalin, were complicit in his atrocities. Expunge them all! For clarity, I’m not proposing any of that. But that’s where today’s moral purists inevitably lead us if there’s any principle behind their demeaning of early leaders.

Those early leaders were not perfect, but they were visionary and inspirational. So let’s discuss their flaws, but don’t try and pretend that we don’t owe a lot to their leadership.

Mall sends out Man drowns COVID-19 alert in Howe Sound Kirsten Clarke

Richmond Centre shopping mall is alerting its store owners and managers after one of the mall’s tenants reported a confirmed case of COVID-19.

In a notice issued Friday, Sept.

4, Richmond Centre’s general manager, Sheila Luft, stated that a COVID-19 case had been confirmed at Zara.

Luft said the store “acted quickly and responsibly by immediately contacting Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), and arranged for a deep-cleaning of their store,” in addition to notifying the shopping centre — which is owned

by Cadillac Fairview — of the case.

“We have been in contact with Zara and VCH and at this point in time there is no further action required and the building can remain open for business,” the notice reads.

Luft also urged all of the centre’s tenants to follow Zara’s example and alert health authorities and Cadillac Fairview immediately in the event of a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 case among any of their staff, customers or contractors.

Richmond Centre propery manager Julie Lauzon confirmed the case in an email to the Richmond News, but did not provide further details.

Last month, the shopping centre issued a notice alerting store managers of a confirmed case in Vans.

A Richmond man who went into medical distress while swimming off the northern tip of Keats Island in Howe Sound Sunday afternoon, has died of an apparent drowning.

Keats Island is northwest of Vancouver, offshore from Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast RCMP said the victim, who was in his 40s, had been out on a boat charter with friends and had gone swimming a few minutes before he was found in distress.

Home surrounded during arrest A major police incident led to sections of Richmond city centre being cordoned off last week.

Around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 2, residents in the area of Eckersley Road — close to Cook Road and Granville Avenue — reported on social media hearing sirens, a voice on a P.A. systems and loud bangs.

Witnesses said they also noticed someone in the neighbourhood being led away in handcuffs.

Emergency Health Services called police to assist at about 4 p.m.

The vicinity was sealed off by Richmond RCMP shortly afterwards, with no traffic being allowed in or out until around 8:30 p.m.

“Police arrived at the Gibsons government dock and met paramedics, Coast Guard and Gibsons Fire Department who were all assisting with the male then determined to be deceased,” RCMP said.

Police told the Richmond News that an arrest was made as part of an “ongoing investigation into a residential” break and enter.

The BC Coroners Service is now investigating to officially determine the man’s cause of death.

Police chief’s wife won’t face charges Ian Jacques

The wife of Delta police Chief Neil Dubord will not be charged following an investigation into an alleged altercation with a Richmond teacher near the Dubords’ property on Centennial Beach in June.

The BC Prosecution Service has announced that rather than charges, Lorraine Dubord will face alternative measures.

“The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) can confirm that this matter has been referred to BC Corrections for consideration of an ‘alternative measures’ resolution,” said spokesperson Dan McLaughlin.

“If the person alleged to have committed an offence in this case enters into and successfully completes an Alternative Measures agreement there will be no prosecution.”

The alleged incident took place on June 6, when Richmond teacher and Surrey resident Kiran Sidhu was making her way back to her parked car after a so-

Unfamiliar with the beach area, and with the tide coming in, Sidhu said she was forced to climb onto rocks, which are on public property, to get to where her car was parked.

As Sidhu walked across the rocks, she said Dubord yelled at her over the fence from her backyard to get down, but with the tide coming in, Sidhu said she was unable to do so.

The RCMP investigation was initiated after Sidhu was not happy with how the Delta Police Department handled her case and after she logged a formal complaint with the department.

Both Dubord and Sidhu exchanged words and Dubord left their altercation only to return moments later where she allegedly sprayed Sidhu with a garden hose.

Surrey RCMP investigated the incident

Sidhu said she was informed of the case developments Thursday morn-

ing.

“I spoke with Crown and they informed me, as well as the Dubords, that they are not pursuing charges but they are recommending the alternative measures process,” she said.

Sidhu said Crown explained the process very well, saying that even if they went ahead with charges it would have likely resulted in an absolute or conditional discharge.

“I get some input here, potentially, so that is never a bad thing to involve the victim in the process,” she said.

“She will be held accountable in some way, but I’m also disappointed even more so with the Delta police. When I first reported it, it went nowhere. The RCMP found two charges that they thought were strong enough for Crown to consider. Delta didn’t even go there, so that is so shady to me.

“I feel validated in that Crown and RCMP kind of validated that this thing that happened to me was assault.”

The Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner is still investigating misconduct allegations related to how the Delta Police Department handled the case.

The City of Richmond estimated there has been a revenue shortfall between $3.4 to $4 million every month during the pandemic, but some of this has been offset by not hiring seasonal workers, laying off auxiliary staff and not filling vacancies.

A large chunk of the shortfall in revenue is due to the closure of River Rock Casino.

The city budgeted receiving $14.5 million in gaming revenue in 2020, but with its closure in March, revenues so far this year have been $2.71 million, or about 19 per cent of what was expected.

The gaming funds were earmarked for debt financing, grants, the RCMP (four officers), capital reserves, council community initiatives and the

building and infrastructure reserve.

House prices continue to rise While the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on city revenues as well as bringing the Metro Vancouver unemployment rate up to 13.1 per cent, house prices are not declining.

The home price index (HPI) in Richmond for a single-family home was about $1.5 million in the second quarter of 2020, up by 1.8 per cent compared to last year.

Townhouse property prices also increased by 1.5 per cent with the HPI at $791,100 while apartments sit at $650,700 with an increase of 3.5 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2019.

Licensed preschool and out-of-school care at community centres in Richmond will soon be upand-running with an emphasis on outdoor activities.

The City of Richmond is working with community centre associations to restart child care to align with the resumption of school.

Out-of-school care started on Tuesday, Sept. 8 and preschool classes will launch on Sept. 21.

In addition to focusing on outdoor activities, children in the programs will be in smaller learning groups where possible.

Cleaning protocols at the facilities have been enhanced and staff have been trained in COVID19-related health and safety.

Mental health, addictions help coming to school district Kirsten Clarke

A new mental health and addictions initiative is designed to help combat stigma and shame that students in Richmond may feel when reaching out for help, and ensure they get that help immediately.

“I’ve met with people who work in the field of mental health and substance abuse in Richmond, as I have across the province, and stigma is still a very huge barrier in reaching out for help,” said Judy Darcy, B.C.’s minister of mental health and addic-

tions.

She made the announcement last week at Thomas Kidd elementary.

“The fact that there is actually a team that will be part and parcel of the school district and the community, I think will be an important way of bringing down the walls of silence and people feeling less shame and stigma about reaching out for mental health support,” she said.

Richmond School District is one of five districts across the province chosen to have new “integrated child and youth (ICY) teams”, which will work to fill gaps in the current mental health and substance use care system for anyone aged 18 or younger.

Other districts included in last week’s announcement are Coast Mountains and Okanagan-Similkameen.

Darcy said the teams will work with the school district to make sure that youth who need mental health or addictions help get it immediately.

So far this year, nine people have died from an overdose in Richmond, two in July.

Vigil remembers ‘violent’ HK event Valerie Leung

A vigil was held at Aberdeen Centre Station Aug. 31 to remember a “violent” event that happened in Hong Kong last year.

Richmond’s Aberdeen Centre Station was lit up with candles, photos and a Lennon Wall on Aug. 31 in commemoration of one of many “violent” events that happened in Hong Kong last year.

The vigil was organized by the Vancouverites Concerned About Hong Kong (VANCAHK) group in memory of the 831 incident.

The 831 incident refers to the night Hong Kong police “indiscriminately” hit ordinary citizens and those passing by at the Prince Edward train station in Hong Kong, according to Jody Chan, spokesperson for VANCAHK. The Aberdeen vigil was a way for Hong Kongers and protesters to “remember, heal and commemorate” what has happened, and continues to happen in Hong Kong.

“Aug. 31 of last year opened the eyes of many Hong Kongers,” said Chan, adding

Hong Kongers are still fighting for justice.

“On the anniversary day of Aug. 31, we (Hong Kongers) are still speaking the truth for that night in Hong Kong.”

The Aberdeen event, said Chan, saw a total of 200 to 300 people who dropped by within the hour the event was held.

In order to follow COVID-19 restrictions, only 50 people were allowed in the “event space” at any time and visitors were asked

to provide their information for contact tracing.

Four stations were established and taped off. One was called the “Prince Edward Station” where people could read information on the Aug. 31 Hong Kong incident and another was a “rest in peace station” where visitors laid down candles for those who have passed away in the “violent events that happened in Hong Kong.”

The two other stations were the “heal-

ing station,” where people wrote painful memories on a piece of paper and burned them. The last station was the “station of hope,” which was similar to a Lennon Wall — a symbol of positive quotes and messages for those suffering.

“It was amazing to see so many people in Vancouver coming out,” said Chan, adding many people paid their respects quietly and left shortly after.

“There were only just a few corners for people to express themselves and that’s what we could do.”

While the event was generally peaceful, Chan said, one person became confrontational and began taking pictures of the participants. Eventually, he had to be escorted away by the Richmond RCMP because he wasn’t willing to provide his contact information as required for contact tracing.

“Hong Kongers have a bit of PTSD with people taking their photos because a lot of pro-Beijing folks have behaviours like that.”

But he was only one person, “so it ended all right,” Chan added.

A racing bike set to be used in two weeks in the annual Cops for Cancer charity ride has been stolen — from a police officer’s Richmond porch.

The $1,500, 10-speed Louis Garneau bike had been locked up on Const.

Lee Marten’s porch in Burkeville until sometime in the early hours of Friday.

That’s when the Vancouver Police Department officer realized it had been taken, just a matter of days before he was due to set off on his fourth Cops for Cancer ride, in aid of the Canadian

Cancer Society.

“It’s pretty quiet here as far as crime goes; it’s very unusual,” Marten told the Richmond News on Tuesday.

“I’ve been checking Craigslist and other places like that. It’s likely just being used for a few days, then it’ll be stolen by another criminal.

“It will end up abandoned somewhere when they realize how hot it is.”

Marten explained how participants get issued a new bike every spring by a bike shop, which works in conjunction with the charity.

“The shop partners with Cops for Cancer and they

buy and distribute the bikes on behalf of the charity,” added Marten.

“We train with that bike until the tour ride in September. The shop is giving me a rental bike to train with and do the tour.”

It’s not the first time one of the tour rider’s bikes has been stolen, explained Marten.

For anyone who is offered the bike for sale or has possession of it, Marten had some words of advice.

“They can drop it off at any police station or call the police and we’ll come pick it up. No questions asked,” he said.

Normally, the tour takes nine days and 900 kilometres to complete, with the tour riders staying in hotels

Richmond city council has voted to demolish a “decorative wall” and watercourse crossing, which it says are unauthorized and obstructing an “integral part” of the city’s drainage network.

Staff asked council to impose remedial actions on the owners, requiring them to demolish the wall and remove the debris and the unauthorized watercourse crossing and complete restoration work for the watercourse — with a deadline of 5 p.m. on Oct. 30, 2020.

If they fail to comply by the deadline, the city will take on that work, estimated to cost $58,400, which the owners would be expected to pay back.

A city staff report recommended the infill and culvert in the watercourse fronting a property — at 13740 Westminster Hwy. near No. 6 Road — be declared as having “obstructed, filled up or damaged” the watercourse, and the decorative wall over that watercourse be declared as “creating an unsafe condition.”

The report states that the “current unauthorized conditions” have resulted in surface ponding in front of the property and a neighbouring church.

City staff originally requested the owners comply with regulations by Sept. 30, 2019, and mailed and hand-delivered letters to the property prior to that date.

However, the owners didn’t comply and staff began issuing fines on Oct. 30, 2019.

Those fines total $8,500, which to date have not been paid, according to the report.

Unless someone has a permit to do so, it’s not permitted to place any fill or material in a watercourse crossing in Richmond, under city bylaw.

In this particular case, the city rejected the watercourse crossing permit application for the property — received Jan. 8, 2018 — because the watercourse is in a Riparian Management Area (RMA), which is not eligible for an infill.

Since then, however, the owners of the property have installed a culvert and infilled the watercourse without a permit and, in 2019, constructed the decorative wall, which the report says “has started to fail.”

“As a result, the unauthorized watercourse crossing cannot be removed without subjecting workers to the safety hazard of the decorative wall potentially collapsing on the work area,” reads the report.

The father of a Richmond autistic teenager, who was allegedy punched at a school basketball court, is expressing his thanks to the Richmond RCMP for helping his son during this difficult time.

Harris First said the RCMP “deserves all the credit in the world” for how they have handled his son’s case. “(The RCMP) has managed to place my son in a good state of mind,” said First, adding they encouraged his son to “keep looking forward … keep learning and playing basketball.”

First told the Richmond News two RCMP officers came out to visit and spent some time with his son a week after the incident.

“The two detectives involved in the case found time to play basketball with my son to help him get back to ‘normal’ as much as possible,” said First, adding they reassured his son it was their “job to catch the bad guys.”

“I will never, ever forget what they did for my son, I simply am indebted forever.”

First’s son had been playing basketball at Richmond Secondary around 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 when a male suspect allegedly punched him, despite being told the teen

had a developmental disability.

The victim had a large cut on his lip and a concussion.

While an arrest has yet to be made, First hopes someone with information on the incident will step forward and call the RCMP or the anonymous line.

Meanwhile, Richmond-based AutismBC is asking people to show more understanding and respect towards those with special needs following the incident in Richmond, as well as another in Surrey last week, also involving a youth on the autism spectrum.

In the Surrey incident, a teen on the autistic spectrum was allegedly punched by a middle-aged man at Central City when the teen allegedly hit the man in the chest after “flapping his hands around him” to tell others to socially distance from him.

While individuals on the autism spectrum can display behaviours that appear aggressive, in reality they are usually driven by anxiety or lack of comprehension, AutismBC explained in a release.

“Aggressive behaviour of any kind, particularly of an adult to a child is unacceptable under any circumstances,” added the release from AutismBC; furthermore, it’s important for the public to respond to individuals on the autism spectrum in a “caring and empathetic way.”

A Richmond resident is once again warning the public to keep their eyes peeled and noses in the air for a fire on the West Dyke Trail.

“I called (the fire department’s) non-emergency line and was advised someone will be dispatched.

“I did some work to put out the embers.

Given today’s expected high (temperatures), better to be safe than sorry and give the area a good soak.”

The man, who only wanted to give his first name, Martin, told the Richmond News in April how he investigated the campfire smell on the dike about 200 metres north of Blundell Road.

A spokesperson for Richmond Fire-Rescue said the area in question is “well known to them” and that they have “frequented it many times in the past.

Back then, he discovered the smouldering remnants of what appeared to be a boozy campfire party, partly hidden in the trees.

“If people observe a fire or illegal burn, we ask them to call 911 immediately.

Last Friday, Martin followed his nose once more while out for a walk and, again, it took him to the exact same spot.

“Open fires are not allowed at any time in the City of Richmond and we appreciate the care and tenacity of the community when it comes to reporting illegal fires.”

Lee was issued the $70 ticket in July by a City of Richmond bylaw officer, after he stopped on Saba Road — near Westminster Highway — to let his wife out as near as possible to their acupuncturist’s clinic.

He told the Richmond News he thought the driver of the pickup truck parked right outside the clinic was getting ready to leave, so he stopped to let him out.

However, the “driver” in question turned out to be a city bylaw officer, who “popped out” from behind the truck and took a photo of Lee’s wife, Priscilla, getting out of their SUV. Feeling mightily aggrieved — given that it was only a few seconds and that both he and wife can’t walk too far due to being injured in a motor vehicle accident — Lee refused to pay the

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the ticket. I didn’t even know this bylaw existed,” said Lee. “I honestly thought the pickup truck was about to leave, that’s why I stopped. But we were so close to (the clinic) my wife just got out, as it was safe to do so.”

A spokesperson for the City of Richmond said that the court’s adjudicator, in making their ruling, said the “bylaw does not concern itself with why a vehicle may have been stopped, but whether or not the vehicle actually was stopped in contravention of the bylaw.”

However, the court didn’t see it his way and it was determined a couple of weeks ago that there was no evidence presented to suggest the vehicle did not violate the traffic bylaw, which states that stopping a vehicle in the

FortisBC is applying to Metro Vancouver to increase its maximum permitted sulphur dioxide emissions eight-fold — from 3.4 tonnes per year to 28 tonnes per year — at its Tilbury liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant across the Fraser River from Richmond.

But FortisBC said 28 tonnes is the maximum emissions possible and they don’t expect to ever reach that amount, something Metro Vancouver’s Kathy Preston, program manager of air quality regulation, confirmed.

per year but they never got anywhere near that amount and have since changed the technology they use.

FortisBC spokesperson Trevor Wales pointed out the amount of emissions in the application, 28 tonnes per year, is the theoretical amount, but the facility would operate in a way that this amount would never be reached.

A 46,000-cubic-metre storage tank was part of the first expansion phase at the Delta plant, located across the south arm of the Fraser River from Richmond. FortisBC has applied for further expansion, something Richmond city council is opposed to.

Preston pointed out the process to get a permit amendment is an arduous one with lengthy emissions reports that are carefully critiqued by

Metro Vancouver air quality staff.

To increase its sulphur emissions, FortisBC has to compile a rigorous report that estimates how much will be released and where it will be dispersed — this report is then sent to Fraser Health, the health authority where the plant is located, to assess its health impacts.

The report includes information like the surrounding topography, the sources of the sulphur, temperature, height of stacks and velocity.

The report will also include information about concentrations of sulphur at points on a grid as well as at “receptors,” for example, schools, businesses and residential areas.

Schools adjust to new reality

After the options for learning were laid out in the survey, a group of Richmond parents petitioned the school district to allow secondary students the option of transitional learning, something that 37 per cent of elementary students originally chose.

Last Thursday, the school district opened this up to Grade 8 and 9 students, however, the option of distance learning for these students was then taken off the table.

Scott Robinson, district superintendent, said the school district has tried to build flexibility into its plan and improve teachers’ online teaching capabilities in case schools need to roll back to home learning.

NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM An 11-year-old girl from Richmond is donating $500 to show her appreciation for health-care professionals from Richmond Hospital and “make the world feel better.”

To some, the $500 doesn’t sound like a lot of money, but each penny comes from love and support from the local community, according to Kylie Chan, who spent six months making soaps from scratch and selling them at Garry Point Park during weekends.

The whole idea started with Chan’s birthday gift — a soap kit — which she received in early March.

“The soap kit taught me how to make soap at home.

And later in March, my idol and American actor Aaron Tveit got the virus. I wanted to figure out some ways to help the world and support the frontline workers,” said Chan.

To support Chan in achieving her dream, Chan’s parents took her to local craft supply stores to purchase raw materials to make natural homemade soap. Chan also put her words to actions by spending her weekends making soaps at home and later selling them at Garry Point Park each weekend.

“I try to make them into different shapes, such as star, heart and shells. And they all have various scents, from cherry blossom to roses,” said Chan.

RCCS asks children to unleash colour The Richmond Chinese Community Society (RCCS) is offering children an opportunity to unleash their creativity with messages of love and hope.

Children aged three to 11 are invited to submit pictures inspired by their experiences during the pandemic in RCCS’s Community over Covid-19 art competition.

RCCS, a charitable organization aimed at promoting community services, has been holding annual drawing competitions at Lansdowne

Centre since 2014. The event usually attracts hundreds of children, but as activities and schools have been cancelled or moved online due to the virus, many children have to hunker down at home to play video games to kill time, explained Raymond Chau, president of RCCS. “To enrich children’s life while staying at home, we decided to continue our event this year with small changes. Instead of bringing drawing materials to Lansdowne Centre, participants are required to bring their final work to LAB Language Arts Studio,

an academic art studio for all age groups in Richmond.

“Children are free to use crayons, colour pencils and charcoal to share their stories and express their thoughts during the era of COVID-19. We’ve already seen many uplifting art pieces on sidewalks and our neighbours’ windows,” said Chau.

The top three contestants in each category will be given cash rewards.

Powerlifter chases athlete title Richmond powerlifting champion Sumeet Sharma has been nominated for Athlete of the Year by Drishti Magazine, a South Asian lifestyle magazine launched in 2010.

One of the criteria for being nominated, said Sharma, is giving back to the community, adding that the result doesn’t matter — rather, he hopes to encourage more people to find peace and joy by helping others.

Sharma won a gold medal for Team Canada in powerlifting at the North American Powerlifting Championships in Panama City last October. In addition to that win, he also bagged gold in both the 2017 and 2018 Western Powerlifting Championships.

A puppy may just be the most common request that kids ask their parents for, except one Richmond pre-teen was told she needed to earn her own money for one — and she did just that.

While her goal of getting a puppy has been achieved, her business has grown even more.

Isabelle Chen, 11, a Manoah Steves elementary student, was doing small chores around the house to save up for a puppy when one day the idea of selling her family jam recipe as a fundraiser came to mind.

“My dad and I were making our coconut jam and then I suddenly had the idea to sell the jam since it was delicious and one of my favourite jams,” said Chen, adding the recipe was

Online shoppers are being warned of a new scam involving shipment tracking numbers and PayPal. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) says the scam — recently reported to the agency — involves con artists tricking shoppers into paying for goods that either don’t exist, or that never arrive, and then further preventing shoppers from securing refunds by providing fraudulent shipping information to PayPal.

According to the BBB, someone could come across a website with “amazing deals” — often brandname goods at a significant discount — while shopping online.

Both the website and products look legitimate, and shoppers are instructed to complete their purchase through PayPal. After checkout, the shopper receives an email that contains a tracking number from UPS, FedEx or another shipping service.

However, after a few days, the tracking number may indicate the package has been delivered when in reality, it was never received by

the shopper, according to the BBB. Furthermore, when the victim contacts the shipping company, they are told the package was delivered but sent to the wrong address. Then, when the victim tries to correct that mistake, they may find the website they ordered from “either unresponsive or unhelpful.”

“In many cases, the site does not provide contact information; in others, they simply ignore your emails or calls,” reads a BBB press release.

One of Richmond’s biggest skating clubs is back on the ice again and its coaches and members can’t wait to get going.

Like most youth sporting organizations, the pandemic either shut down or severely restricted their activities since March.

The same could be said for the Connaught Skating Club, which has just started back on local ice, at the Richmond Ice Centre and the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Connaught spent the spring training its skaters via Zoom video conferences, with more than 75 classes offered weekly to instruct more than 100 different skaters.

They also offered socially distanced outdoor training classes in Richmond.

June, July and August were spent training at the ScotiaBarn in Burnaby, with 25 Con-

naught athletes competing in their first virtual event of the season at the end of August.

“To be back on the ice in Richmond gives a much needed relief to the children, parents and coaches who wish to thrive in their sport of passion, figure skating,” said Keegan Murphy, Connaught’s director of programs.

“We are so proud as an organization to have navigated this time with health and safety, but also creativity.

“It has been the innovation of our coaching team, the trust of our board of directors and the dedication of our athletes that has allowed us to return to Richmond with a wonderful start to the fall 2020 season.”

GASKIN, Linda J. (nee Van Santen) February 3, 1946 − August 20, 2020 With sadness, we announce the death of Linda Gaskin from lung cancer. Linda was predeceased by her husband, James (Jim) Gaskin. She is survived by her partner of many years, Wally Tutschek; her daughter, Jo−Ann (Sid) Kwantes; and granddaughters, Katreen (Dilon) McNary and Melissa Kwantes. She is also survived by her sister, Cheryl Nyeholt. Linda moved to Richmond in 1948 from Manitoba. Linda’s life was spent in Richmond owning or running one business after another.

Upon retirement, craft fairs became her new passion; it gave her a place to sell her crafts and kept her busy always. Linda’s true life passion was knitting and crocheting − well all crafting.

MURRAY, Vincent January 3rd, 1933 - September 1st, 2020 With great sadness we announce the passing of Vincent Murray, on Tuesday September 1st in the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice House, Richmond, B.C. Born in Saggart, County Dublin, Ireland in 1933 to William and Rose Murray. Youngest of 8 children; Linda, Liam, Sean, Bynie, Angie, Dessie, Joan and Vin. He is survived by his wife Marlene, son Mark (Linda) and daughters Angie, Elaine and Alison (Jerome). Also, by grandchildren Bart, Matthew (Breezy), Mikayla, Liam and Ashlin.

He left Ireland when he was 18 to join the Royal Air Force. He spent 15 years in the forces mostly in England. In 1953 he met his sweetheart Marlene; they were married in 1959 and were together for over 61 years. His travels took him to Cyprus and Egypt, he also spent time in France, Africa and Europe as part of his service. He finished his military career, training aircraft apprentices in RAF Halton, England. After the air force he worked for various civilian airlines as an Aircraft Engineer, always taking additional courses and studying, he believed in continuously improving himself. He worked hard and never sat still. His travels also took him to Malaysia and finally to British Columbia in Canada, where he lived the rest of his days specifically in the Village of Steveston in Richmond.

His career continued in Canada teaching at the BCIT campus near the Vancouver airport; just imagine all the lives he touched and influenced in all the years teaching. Dad had a passion for Soccer, Gaelic (Irish) football, specifically St. Mary’s of Saggart and Golf; he played all those sports and continued to be an avid fan his whole life.

The Murrays are a close family and spent lots of time together; he also kept close contact with his brothers, sisters and their families across the Atlantic. Dad always remembered his roots and we enjoyed hearing his stories about his adventures catching rabbits in the Slade Valley, Saggart, County Dublin. He leaves behind a great legacy, he influenced countless, he was loved by many, a full life well lived, and he will be sorely missed. I am sure he is enjoying the reunion with his many brothers and sisters.

Barber shop welcomes customers back with health and safety in mind

taff at Q2 Barbers in Blundell Centre are busy giving customers a big “welcome back” after being closed for a couple of months this spring.

From March to early June they were shut due to COVID-19 restrictions and now have re-opened with a focus on providing a safe environment.

To comply with provincial health regulations, customers are asked to wear masks when they enter the barbershop, which is located across from the McDonald’s restaurant.

Salon staff are also mandated to wear masks.

“In addition, we get everyone to sanitize their hands and take their temperature before they come in,” says owner Vanessa Nguyen. “And we enssure all of the stations are properly cleaned and dissinfe ecte ed before and after they are used to make sure they are e safe for everyone.”

“Most of our customers are OK with wearing a mask. But there are some who have difficulty and are e not force ed to wear one. The same goes for children und der fi five-ye earsold,” Nguyen says. “They can wear it, but can pulll it down from their nose, making sure to kee ep it coveriing their mouth.”

Prior to the temporary closure, Q2 Barbe ers had fi fiv ve chairs inside the salon. Now, to ensure social distan ncing,, just three are in use.

“We cut the number of chairs we used to keep peoplle spread far enough apart and as safe as possible,” Ng guyen n says. “And it is working well.”

At the moment, Q2 is not taking appointments and will serv ve customers on a first come, first served basis.

Due to space limitations, just three customers are permitted to wait inside the salon.

“The remainder are directed to wait outside, preferably in their cars, to maintain social distancing, and we estimate what time they can come back,” Nguyen says, adding customers are requested to arrive with freshly washed hair.

“We also don’t use blow dryers, either, to limit the amount of air that blows around in the building,” Nguyen says.

De espite all of the changes based on health conditions, the salon’s hours haven’t changed. It remains open from 9 a.m m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“This has bee en a different way of providing a service to our valu ued cu ustomers, and we’d like to thank everyone who hass been supporting us during this difficult time,” Nguy yen says.
