Election call is Not just CBSA speeding pure opportunism Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, B.C. Premier John Horgan announced he is dissolving the provincial legislature and calling an election early.

He says delay will “create uncertainty and instability…” He further states, “or we can do what I believe is always the right thing: And that’s ask British Columbians what they think.”

I’ll tell you what I think, Mr. Horgan: I think the instability we need to be concerned about is yours, if you think calling an early election in the midst of the worst pandemic in over a century is a responsible and reasonable course of action.

You need to do your job and govern.

I think this is pure political opportunism because you’re enjoying momentary popularity in the midst of the pandemic.

You promised you would not call an early election and yet here we are.

OK, so what has this NDP minority government done for us? They managed the pandemic arguably adequately, though I believe not firmly enough and I place the majority of credit on Dr. Bonnie Henry.

What else? Oh yes, they gave us the speculation and vacancy tax declaration requirement, mailed to us with a glossy brochure that tells us 99 per cent of British Columbians are exempt from the tax.

They have legislated changes for ICBC, declaring concussion, a brain injury, as a “minor injury” and legislated limits on settlements and evidence.

I would like to know which party will do away with the vacancy tax declaration and which party will allow me to pick which auto insurer I wish to use.

I might be inclined to vote for that party, but I won’t vote for John Horgan’s NDP.

At the end of June, B.C. had reduced COVID-19 cases to about 150 active cases and about 15 new cases daily.

B.C. and Quebec are now the worst provinces per capita for active cases, and B.C. has the highest test positivity rate.

This wasn’t as good as the Maritime provinces, or Manitoba, but it was the best of the four provinces with international airports, and much better than Ontario and Quebec which border the huge number of cases in New York State.

Quebec and Ontario are having resurgences, too, and are introducing more restrictive measures on group sizes, and larger fines for those who flout measures.

Gunfire exchanged at major intersection Richmond RCMP is asking for the public’s help after an “exchange of gunfire” between two vehicles at a gas station last Thursday night.

At around 11:35 p.m. on Sept. 17, police were called to a report of shots fired at one of the two gas stations at the intersection of No. 3 and Blundell roads.

According to police, the occupants of two vehicles, one black and one white, reportedly exchanged gunfire before departing the area at high speed.

Burning car linked to death Police say a burning vehicle found in Richmond last Wednesday night is linked to a Vancouver murder.

A 23-year-old Vancouver resident, Iqubal Grewal, was found dead in front of a house near Knight Street and East 64th Avenue in an apparent targeted shooting.

Shortly afterwards, on Sept. 16, Richmond RCMP responded to calls of a torched vehicle — a hallmark of a gang hit — near Kartner Road and Westminster Highway, east of No. 7 Road.

Police have named the man shot dead at a restaurant in Richmond on Friday night.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said 44-year-old Jian Jun Zhu, who is known to police, died of gunshot wounds after the incident at the Manzo restaurant on Capstan Way. The second shooting victim, a man in his fifties who has not been officially named but is also known to police, was treated for non-life threatening injuries and has since been released from hospital.

IHIT said the incident is believed to be targeted and is asking the public for help in identifying any vehicles involved.

Any drivers with dashcam video from the area of Garden City Road between Capstan Way and Cambie Road between

6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept.

18, are urged to contact IHIT immediately.

“This was a brazen shooting that could have resulted in further victims,” said Sgt. Frank Jang, of IHIT. Zhu was also an alleged money launderer tied to an underground bank in Richmond, while the Vancouver Sun reported the wounded man was Paul King Jin. According to allegations by B.C.’s director of civil forfeiture, several years ago, hundreds of millions of dollars of druglaced cash were emptied from suitcases onto the floors of a Richmond office, to be counted by Zhu, for money laundering, In November 2018, federal Crown prosecutors, for undisclosed reasons, turfed the high-profile case of alleged money laundering involving Zhu’s money service business Silver International on Cooney Road.

Richmond Mounties are asking the public for help after a man apparently tried to coax a 10-year-old boy into his van.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 14 in the 6800 block of Azure Road, close to Brighouse elementary.

According to the boy, a man aged around 50 approached him in a champagne-coloured van and told him he knew his mom and that he was supposed to take him home.

However, the boy said he was suspicious of this, so he ran away and returned home.

This incident was reported to

Richmond RCMP the next day and a suspect was identified but later ruled out.

The suspect driver has been described as of Asian descent, possibly with an accent, with short straight black hair, pimpled/freckled/dotted face and wearing a white shirt and gold chain.

The vehicle is described as champagne coloured with a black circle logo surrounded

by Asian-type writing.

COVID-19 cases rise

On the same day the province announced a record number of COVID-19 cases — 165 new ones reported on Sept. 17 — the latest Richmond numbers were released and showed a slight decrease compared to the previous week’s tally.

There were 28 new cases in Richmond over the past week (Sept. 11 to 17), bringing the total number to 219 (as of Sept. 17) since the beginning of the pandemic. The previous week, the total cases were 34.

City warns about fake workers The City of Richmond is warning residents of reports in the last couple of days of people impersonating municipal employees to gain entry to homes.

According to city spokesperson Clay Adams, they know of at least two incidents where individuals wearing work gear claimed to be city employees and were knocking on doors, claiming they need to access the house.

However, Adams, who said Richmond RCMP is aware of the reports, wanted to remind residents never to allow someone entry to their homes without confirming their identity, no matter how convincing they may seem.

He added that city staff:

Council voted Monday to turn a vacant lot at 8620 and 8660 Beckwith Rd., purchased by the city for $3.15 million, into paid parking with a daily rate of $3.

The total investment to create the parking lot is $46,000.

Currently, there’s no paid parking in the area or on any streets near the property, which are “heavily used” by local businesses and Canada Line users due to the “unregulated timed street parking,” according to a city staff report to council.

In order to encourage use of the paid parking lot, the city will place time-limited parking signs on Beckwith Road and nearby streets, such as Smith and Charles streets, according to the report.

However, the paid parking lot will only have 32 spaces, and the 200 onstreet spaces would be turned into timed spots.

“While this enhanced enforcement would likely result in increased revenue for the city, it could

COVID-19 exposure at McMath secondary Kirsten Clarke

There has been a COVID-19 exposure at a Richmond secondary school.

In an email to parents Friday, McMath secondary confirmed there has been an exposure to the virus at the school.

McMath said Vancouver Coastal Health has worked with the school to identify close contacts, who have been asked to self-isolate.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest there has been any exposure to the wider staff or student community,” the email reads.

“Areas of the school which may have been impacted have undergone a deep clean in accordance with our district’s health and safety protocols.”

The school did not specify when the exposure occurred.

Sonia Fursteneau, the recently elected leader of the B.C. Green Party, wrote to Horgan last week, before he called the election, asking him not to dismiss their political partnership nor the fixed election date of next fall, saying it’s not time for an “unnecessary and selfserving election.”

Monday’s election announcement triggered some quick political nominations — so far, two new candidates and two incumbents have declared their intentions to run in Richmond.

Richmond city councillor Alexa Loo is running in the Oct. 24 provincial election in Richmond South Centre — held by Linda Reid for 29 years — under the BC Liberal banner while Matt Pitcairn, who stepped down as CEO of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce this week, will try to replace John Yap, MLA for RichmondSteveston, also running as a BC Liberal.

Municipal by-election could be triggered

Loo is serving her second term as a Richmond city councillor.

If she won the Richmond South Centre seat, she said she’d use her council experience and connections at the next level of government. “(I would) take what I’ve learned, take the relationships I’ve built and move on and continue to work together,” Loo said, adding it’s good to have someone who understands municipal government at higher levels of government.

If she steps down as a councillor, with two years left in her term, it would most likely trigger a municipal by-election within six months. (The next municipal election is in October 2022.)

One campaign office Johal, who is running for a second term in office, said all four Richmond BC Liberal candidates plan to share a campaign office, rather than having separate ones.

The office will allow a limited number of people at once, to adhere to COVID-19 physical distance orders, he added.

Give the Scientists credit, but we’re still living with uncertainty (ergo, annuities) Introduction Nobody in the scientific community received advance notice of the Sars-Covid2 Virus, which reached us early this year. They are all working still to learn about the virus and develop a vaccine. What normally takes years, may come to us early next year. Even when the vaccine is approved and injected into us, who knows whether it will work on everyone and for how long it will be effective. Buy your masks!

This level of uncertainty, and the Pandemic itself, has changed our lives.

What kind of “normal” we return to is really anybody’s guess. It does seem the Pandemic has triggered a higher level of interest in making Wills and doing some other Estate planning. Perhaps we are all looking for some degree of certainty in our lives. With respect to Estate planning, if one thing is clear, it is that interest rates will be staying fairly low for some time yet (in order to help recover our economy).

Annuities have, in my view, therefore, become more important and are worth considering in your planning, in 2020.

Annuities defined I asked Ms. Alexandra McEachern, of RBC Dominion Securities, for some further insight. Here is some of what she said.

First, an annuity is purchased, typically but not always, from an insurance company with a fixed amount of money. You can invest really any amount you wish. There is no tax advantage with the investment (as with an RRSP).

In return, you receive from the institution a fixed amount of money (income) per month, or even per annum if you prefer. It does not change.

Unless you purchase an indexed annuity You get a set amount of money as long as you lives does not change.

You cannot cancel an annuity. Once you purchase, you have it and there is no going back.

The money you receive is taxable income and must be declared as such on your tax return.

When you pass, the Annuity is annulled and the funds are gone. There is no “residual money”. So if you purchase an annuity in 2021 and you die in 2022, whatever was invested is lost. Unless you purchase an insured annuity.

Pros and Cons What is important about annuities is that your risk is eliminated. You invest whatever amount you choose, you receive your income. If the stock market crashes or a Canadian Bank declares bankruptcy (which would really mean the end of the world, surely), you still receive your money each month.

The problem with annuities is, in my opinion, twofold. First, as Ms. McEachern says, we are in a low interest rate environment and returns are low. You need right now to invest a lot of money in order to receive a “decent” level of income from your annuity.

The second problem is life expectancy. The longer you live, after your investment, the more likely you are to have invested prudently. An annuity is designed to provide a fixed level of income for life. If you don’t live long enough, your investment was a “bad” one and your family may suffer financially from it.

Another aspect of annuities, which may be viewed as a “con” is that the purchaser has to be insurable. Thus, if you want to purchase an annuity, and you are examined by a Nurse or other professional, and deemed not insurable, you cannot purchase. This is only required for insured annuities. Annuities with no insurance component requires no medical exam.

Options Speaking with an advisor (not necessarily at the institution who will sell you the annuity) will help. Whether an annuity is for you will depend on a few factors, including your age, health, asset ownership and risk tolerance.

To get around the problem of life expectancy, consider an insured annuity.

When you purchase the annuity, buy insurance at the same time. Doing this assures you of a cash payout when you die, so that your capital is not lost. It will help your family.

Another option that should be mentioned is with respect to your RRSP. In the year you turn 71, the RRSP must be converted to a RRIF or collapsed.

But you are permitted at age 71 to purchase an annuity instead. Doing that avoids the minimum withdrawal requirements of a RRIF (which increase with age and will increase your taxable income) and gives you the fixed annual income you may prefer.

Conclusion In the elevated level of uncertainty we live in, it is safe to say that financial planning has become more important. Annuities should be considered as part of a retirement income strategy. The importance of a fixed income from some of your investments cannot be overlooked.

You should seek independent advice from a professional before concluding your decision. An annuity should ultimately form only a part of your investment strategy.

Mooncakes and lanterns are symbols of the upcoming Mid-Autumn and Harvest Full Moon festivals.

And while COVID-19 may have put a damper on celebrations this year, the city has organized a virtual lantern celebration.

In collaboration with the City Centre Community Association, Marina Szijarto, a Richmond resident, will be creating a lantern-making video for this year’s celebrations.

While Szijarto has organized and hosted many lantern-making workshops in the past five years during the festivals, she said this time will be unique.

The video, she said, will show several versions of lanterns people can make with their family using common items in a home, compared to materials that are usually prepared for participants during past workshops.

With the fall season coming and life returning to regular routines, Canadian Blood Services is encouraging donors to continue to help people in Canada who need blood.

A blood donation event will be held at Peace Mennonite Church location at 11571 Daniels Rd. on Sept. 30 from 1 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

According to Dragana Nikolic, event coordinator at Canadian Blood Services, the event is currently booked at 65 per cent, with about 50 more appointments still available for people to

Food bank gears up for Thanksgiving drive Every year, the Richmond Food Bank collects thousands of pounds of food during the BC Thanksgiving Food Drive to help raise enough food for residents in need.

However, many food banks are struggling to keep their shelves full this year due to an increase in people turning to the food bank for daily grocery needs during the pandemic, according to the society.

The goal for the food drive is to raise more than 500,000 pounds of food to support food banks for 50 cities throughout B.C. this year.

Due to COVID-19, the society will be launching a contactless food drive where brown paper bags will be placed

at Richmond residents’ doorsteps starting Sept. 21.

Residents are encouraged to place non-perishable food donations in the paper bag and then place the bag in front of their main door where it’s visible from their driveway before 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.

Volunteers will pick up the donations and deliver them to the Richmond Food Bank that day.

Donation bags can also be dropped off at the food bank’s Cedarbridge Way location or at the nearest grocery store.

The 2020 Richmond Christmas Fund campaign’s annual auction will be moved online due to the pandemic, with bidding starting at the end of November.

YVR runway hosts Terry The Terry Fox Run was largely held virtually this year due to the ongoing pandemic, but Vancouver International Airport decided to open its runway for its employees and partners.

Joined by the Rick Hansen Foundation, there were 30 runners at the event on Sunday.

“Terry Fox is an iconic Canadian, and cancer research is so important,” said YVR marketing manager Christopher Richards, adding “The weather was perfect, smoky conditions cleared over the weekend and we were able to safely run for a great cause.”

The Christmas Fund serves low-income families, and individuals so they can celebrate Christmas.

Last year, almost 3,000 people in Richmond received assistance, including 890 children, 337 youth and 360 seniors, a 22 per cent increase compared with the year before.

But the economic hardship caused by COVID-19 means more families than ever will be relying on the fund this year, according to Ed Gavsie, president and CEO

of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG).

Not So Silent Night, dubbed this year “A Not So Isolated Night 2020,” will take place through two online auctions — one public and one private.

The public auction will be open for five days at the end of November.

Participants will be given a Zoom code to the private auction, which will be held on Dec. 2 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Although some minor changes have been made to the annual auction, the sixth annual Richmond RCMP Toy Drive is still going to take place on Nov. 21 outdoors at Lansdowne Centre.

Meanwhile, the 10th annual Christmas Fund DriveThru will be held at the Brig-

house Fire Hall on Dec. 1, encouraging people to drive through the fire hall to donate cash or toys.

The City of Richmond has also donated more than 100 bikes.

All toys will be sanitized before being given out to families.

To encourage more people to become donors this year, seven local politicians, who are also named as honorary advisors, agreed to lend their social media voices to support the Christmas Fund, said Wayne Duzita, co-chair of Richmond Christmas Fund.

Duzita added that they are still looking for about 20 more auction items valued between $50 and $200.

YVR terminates major infrastructure project Kirsten Clarke

With $525 million already spent, the Vancouver Airport Authority is halting a large-scale infrastructure project due to the impact of COVID-19 on the aviation industry.

The airport announced recently it’s putting an end to its CORE Program, part of a multi-year capital program, just a day after letting the construction company know of its intentions.

It’s the latest in a number of steps the air-

port authority has taken to reduce operating and capital costs to protect its long-term financial health, said the airport authority in a statement. Instead, they will focus their resources on projects that meet their more immediate needs.

The CORE Program was designed when YVR was experiencing double-digit growth.

In a statement, Tamara Vrooman, who took over as president and CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority on July 1, said cancelling the project was a “difficult but necessary decision.”

“We simply do not need the capacity this project brings for the foreseeable future

and need to prioritize our resources elsewhere,” she said.

Those resources will go instead towards projects that support the recovery of the aviation industry such as trials for health screening and testing, and improving data and technology infrastructure.

The airport will also enhance YVR’s cargo facilities and other projects that are “best completed when the airport is less busy, such as airfield infrastructure,” according to the announcement.

The CORE program included a central utilities building, which would have housed one of largest geoexchange systems in

Canada, slated for completion by 2022.

Geoexchange, a heating and cooling system, uses the earth’s renewable energy found just below the surface. It would have been integrated throughout the airport.

The central utilities building was being built on the airport’s former value parking lot. That site was also earmarked for a ground transportation centre including a new parkade under the CORE program.

The program can be restarted in the future when additional capacity is required, and it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars more to complete, according to a YVR spokesperson.

Brian Corcoran is a man who likes a challenge and he certainly took one on when he was elected chair of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce in June.

Brian obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from Dalhousie University and his Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall, York University.

The diversity and the food are the obvious choices which really set Richmond apart. However, the park spaces are a real underrated feature of Richmond.

How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Luckily my office is in the heart of Richmond at the intersection of Cooney and Ackroyd roads so I enjoy getting out for walks during my lunch. It’s nice to get some fresh air and it gives me a chance to take in the city. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I am a big fan of the Garden City Lands which also happens to be one of the locations I use for exercise.

Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests?

Steveston is always a great choice as well as my wife’s parents’ house for some great barbecue.

They are life-long Richmond residents. Is there an adaption to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept? (i.e., working from home, one way traffic in Steveston, automatic walk signs) I have been in the office throughout the pandemic so I have definitely enjoyed the automatic walk signs as well as the reduced traffic, especially in the George Massey Tunnel.

I walk my dog two or three times a day, taking around 10 to 15 thousand steps.

I also play pickle ball, one or two times a week. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I love walking on the dike around Richmond, usually the West Dyke. We also go to Steveston Village and Garry Point Park quite often. What song best describes Richmond?

Tamara Vrooman

As president & CEO of Vancouver Airport Authority, Tamara Vrooman understands the value of having an airport that is both an economic generator and community contributor — a hub of innovation that gives back, supports the region and sets the bar for sustainability.

Tamara serves as Simon Fraser University’s 12th Chancellor and chairs the board of the Rick Hansen Foundation.

Tamara started as the new CEO of YVR on July 1 after serving 13 years as president & CEO of Vancity. During this time, she became a leading voice in the Canadian and international financial sectors.

Tamara lends her voice and leadership experience to issues related to women, families and children with a particular focus on issues related to equality, inclusion and empowerment.

What do you like best about Richmond?

The people, the food and, of course, the airport. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Walking — there are so many great places to walk in Richmond. And one of the benefits is that the blocks are long so you get your exercise. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

Wayne Duzita At the age of 76, Wayne Duzita still hasn’t found the path to full retirement. After working 23 years with IAT (International Aviation Terminals), Duzita continues to consult in that field.

Wayne has lived in Richmond for 50 years with his wife, two adult children, two grandsons and one sister. He has a Bachelor of Commence Degree from UBC and has received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal, among other awards for community service.

What do you like best about Richmond?

I enjoy the fact that Richmond is an island — it creates a uniqueness, similar to a village where you are surrounded by familiar points of interest.

I’m not sure about Richmond, but for Steveston, it’s the theme from the television series Cheers, “where everybody knows your name.”

How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests?

I have a Richmond Olympic Oval membership; I work out three days week and try to do a fast walk every other night around our community.

Steveston — I was delighted to see Steveston win the CBC “Best Metro Vancouver Neighbourhood” honours.

What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

Is there an adaptation to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept.

The dike area around our city — I discovered you can walk/cycle from the Hamilton area almost contiguously along the river’s edge to the Deas Tunnel.

I would like to keep the change of pace and how we respond to others. We have become more tolerant of things and people around us.

What do you like best about Richmond?

I really love its history of the diversity of the many early cultures that made Richmond what it is today. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Our head office sits along Horseshoe Slough Trail, which is a good place to walk. In summer after work, getting out for a cycle along Dyke Road is something I love to do when I can. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I enjoy the mix of nature along the Fraser River and farmlands along Dyke Road

Barbara Tomasic Barbara Tomasic is the director of artistic programs at Gateway Theatre.

and has been on faculty at Capilano University and taught at Studio 58 and UBC.

Originally from New Westminster, she has worked in theatres across Canada directing, acting and producing with companies such as Soulpepper, Western Canada Theatre, Chemainus Theatre, Prairie Theatre Exchange,and the Firehall Arts Centre.

Her relationship with Gateway Theatre began in 2004 when she played Maria in the Sound of Music.

Since then she has performed in The King and I and directed many of Gateway’s holiday shows including Crazy for You and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

What do you like best about Richmond?

I have to say, I love all of the delicious restaurants in Richmond and especially love discovering new small family-run establishments. The cultural diversity of the cuisine available is fantastic, and there are always more places to discover. If I could eat dumplings every day, I would.

It’s hard not to associate Richmond with the music I have heard at Gateway Theatre, so for me, the song that comes to mind is “Getting to Know You” from The King and I.

How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Richmond is a great walking city, so I spend a lot of time walking in Minoru park and along the river near the Olympic Oval. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I love the path next to the river, from the Olympic Oval heading in either direction. There are so many birds to watch, and interesting things

Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests?

To see a play or musical at the Gateway Theatre of course! But also to one of the many amazing restaurants in town — Dynasty Dumplings, Afuri Ramen or any of the amazing places on Restaurant Row. Is there an adaption to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept.

Outdoor picnics and meetings. So many of my work and social interactions are taking place outside, and it’s lovely.

What do you like best about Richmond?

I like the flatness of Richmond. When we came to Canada, my children were very young and always asked to ride a bicycle. How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

It is very easy to get fresh vegetables and fruits or any culture-specific items very easily. I feel that if one takes care of what you eat, it is easy to maintain your health. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I have always loved malls, dikes for walks and Stevenson Village as it is so unique. Is there an adaption to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept (i.e., working from home, one way traffic in Steveston, automatic walk signs)?

It has not made much difference for me.

I have not stayed home for so long that I am enjoying being home.

Marius Roevde Marius Roevde was a professional soccer player in multiple countries before taking on his current role as executive director at Richmond FC. He is also an educator, speaker and has coached with multiple World Cup teams.

Marius has volunteered for many charitable organizations, for example, Hope and Health, Indigenous children and youth and the Richmond Food Bank.

He left professional soccer to work with grassroots soccer organizations, regardless of gender and ability.

What do you like best about Richmond?

The multicultural communities and diversity in Richmond is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced, and I think it’s a special trait to be treasured and valued.

How do you stay healthy in Richmond?

Soccer! I’m out on the field every day and I love it! However, I also enjoy getting outside where we live, near the dike. We spend hours running, walking, biking and enjoying the beauty of the Fraser River. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

Right outside our door — we have a special spot to enjoy the spectacular sunsets of Steveston, not to mention the Bark Park, which is our dog Scout’s haven!

Where in Richmond do you like to take out-of-town guests?

There are so many choices, and so many great places in Richmond. I love Steveston boardwalk, the restaurants, the parks and the water. Is there an adaption to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept (i.e., working from home, one way traffic in Steveston, automatic walk signs)?

Getting outdoors as much as possible, taking care of my garden, eating a well balanced diet with lots of fresh vegetables, (attempting to) limit screen time. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I recently discovered Terra Nova which is a wonderful place, but I have to say the Nature Park at Westminster and No. 5 Road is a beautiful spot for a walk — a hidden gem!

I think automatic walk signs are a great idea. I find Richmond to be not very pedestrian friendly (particularly around my neighbourhood).

Shayain also runs her own consultancy, SJG International, which services Fortune 500 companies, professional sports teams and the entertainment industry.

We start with brunch at the Flying Beaver to watch the seaplanes take off and land, then head to Steveston Harbour to see the fresh fish that has been caught.

Then we head to a local coffee shop and bakery and then walk to the Steveston Museum to show our guests the history.

This is followed by dinner at our local Asian restaurant (we have a few favourites so we decide based on the guests preference). Is there an adaption to COVID-19 that’s been made that you’d like kept?

I really do appreciate the automatic walk signs on major intersections so we have one fewer touch point.

Earl Clapp Earl Clapp is a 77-year-old retired police officer, who was born and raised in Belleville, Ont., one of seven children.

He joined the RCMP in 1964 and was transferred to Richmond in December 1966. He married his late wife Judy and raised two girls in Richmond, where he has lived for 52 years.

Clapp joined the Vancouver Police Department in 1971 and retired in 1999.

Since his retirement, he has focused on helping people.

To fulfill that, he goes dumpster diving, sharing his findings with the many people in need. Clapp is also an avid supporter of Pathways Clubhouse.

Michael Chiu Michael Chiu is a local businessman and committed volunteer who has been living in Richmond for 42 years with his family.

La Toya Barrington After being born in Montreal and growing up in Richmond, La Toya Barrington has been making her mark in the city she calls home.

The mom-of-three young kids runs her own business, Go2Girl Services, which she has used in the past to help people in poverty in her community.

Johnathan Costa Johnathan Costa is the Station Chief and an advanced care paramedic at the Steveston ambulance station.

He grew up in Vancouver and at the age of 16, joined the military and moved out east. He graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada with a master’s degree in nuclear engineering. Upon gradua-

tion, he returned and worked as a software engineer in and around Vancouver.

Seeking a more fulfilling career, he joined the BC Ambulance Service where he has enjoyed being a paramedic for the past 19 years.

Marika Lopez Marika Lopez is 18 years old and is currently in her first year at KPU studying criminology.

When she’s not busy studying, working or spreading seizure awareness, Marika is a junior editor of Motive Word and Pen.

She also spreads seizure awareness on Instagram (@seizure_soldiers) and Facebook (Seizure Soldiers),.

In her spare time, she creates posts for her seizure awareness page or learns about different laws.

She also has four different roles at three different epilepsy organizations.

One way Marika relaxes after a busy, stressful day, is by reading one of her books or writing in her diary.

Karina Reid Karina Reid is an enthusiastic advocate for issues that affect the community. She strongly believes that people are the power for change and that we must stand up against injustice and be a part of the solution.

Karina began her political career, running for school trustee in the 2018 election and was part of the six-strong Richmond Education Party.

In February, this year when the pan-

demic began, she started a kindness rocks group that was a way to create joy and kindness throughout the community.

Steveston Rocks has expanded to many places in Richmond (outside of Richmond Hospital).

Dave Thomson Dave Thomson is the community outreach coordinator for the Richmond Centre for Disability, as well as being a public speaker, Invisible Illness advocate/educator and an entrepreneur.

Dave has lived in Richmond for 18 years and worked here for more than 11.

Dave is no stranger to isolation, having served in the navy and having been a corrections officer.

My dog and I love outside of the Richmond Oval, especially the stretch of the Fraser River between the No. 2 Road and Gilbert bridges.

Steveston is an obvious choice. Probably everyone agrees with that. But there are a few other little areas that are unique to Richmond, such as Finn Slough. This little fishing community where people live in their small, wooden floating and piling-supported houses offers a glimpse into Richmond’s unique past.

Playing hockey at Minoru, the Richmond Ice Centre and the Oval keeps me very active. I also enjoy refereeing adult hockey. What’s your favourite sliver of nature in Richmond?

I’m not much into music, so I wouldn’t really have an opinion on this one.

Working from home has led to a reduction in traffic and pollution. For me, I look forward to being able to shed my mask and, once again, fully engage with people. I also look forward to shaking hands with people again.

A Richmond not-for-profit is hosting free virtual vegan cooking classes to help spread the message about healthy eating and educating people that vegan food isn’t all about kale salads and quinoa bowls.

Mooncake baking full steam ahead

Participants will learn how to make kid-friendly vegetarian lunch boxes, vegetable soups or even fresh spring rolls mixed with a homemade dipping sauce within an hour in their own kitchens.

During the past two months, Erica Lu has been busy running around in the back kitchen at Richmond’s Tzu Chi Foundation, an organization formed by Taiwanese immigrants to support newcomers and the public’s needs.

As a long-term volunteer with Tzu Chi, Lu presents an hour-long cooking session via YouTube’s live streaming tool or a Zoom meeting each month.

The kitchen at Saint Germain Bakery is rich with the smell of freshly baked mooncakes as chefs pull dozens of the seasonal treat out of the oven every 12 minutes.

The local bakery is launching fresh-out-of-the-oven mooncakes to help cheer people up, despite the challenges of 2020, said Alex Ma, marketing manager of Saint Germain Bakery at Aberdeen Square.

These mooncakes taste similar to Chinese steamed custard buns, a classic Cantonese recipe that yields a tender pastry with just the right amount of sweetness, according to Ma.

Roundness symbolizes completeness and togetherness in Asian culture. Therefore, the round mooncakes represent the harvest moon in the night sky during the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Mooncakes are more than food, said Ma. Most of the ones sold at local supermarkets are imported from other countries and have been made several months earlier.

However, these Chinese steamed custard mooncakes are made here in Richmond.

“For many people, these treats really hit the spot. They are like a passageway to childhood and many sweet memories. Just like music and literature, food can transcend cultural boundaries as well,” said Ma.

A Richmond brewery, Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks, brought home the bronze award from the Canadian Brewing Awards Competition (CBAC) this year.

Richmond United teams 50-year-old beer league skating on thin ice up with soccer school Alan Campbell

The recently re-branded Richmond United Soccer Club (RUSC) is teaming up with one of the city’s leading soccer academies.

RUSC — which, after 46 years, changed its name in June from the Richmond Girls Soccer Association — has partnered with the Richmond-based Martin Bittengl School of Soccer.

A statement released by RUSC on Wednesday said that Bittengl and his staff will coach the club’s new adult program, which has two teams in the Richmond Adult Soccer League, and also its boys program, which will start in the spring.

RUSC was previously a girls-only youth soccer operation, until it revamped before the summer to include children of all genders and identities.

“Our club’s goal is to create an allinclusive environment that not only pro-

vides a variety of programming options for all players, but with direct on-field coaching by some of the best coaches in B.C.” RUSC’s director of operations, Mandhir Punia, told the Richmond News.

“Martin, by the end of this year, will possess the highest coaching certification that a coach can have.

“Martin and his team provide our players with the opportunity to train with some of the best coaches available…”

Bittengl, added Punia, is currently a UEFA A Licence coach and is studying for his UEFA Pro Licence, the highest certification available in the sport.

The News reported in February how the previously all-boys youth soccer program at Richmond FC was launching its girls’ program this year with former Team Canada coach Even Pellerud in a leadership position.

The recent changes at both RUSC and Richmond FC mean the city now has, for the first time, two youth soccer clubs offering both male and female programs.

One of Richmond’s oldest men’s hockey leagues is in “grave danger of folding,” due to pandemic restrictions on the ice.

The Richmond Industrial Hockey League (RIHL) has been around for more than 50 years and normally plays Tuesday nights out of Richmond Ice Centre at Steveston Highway and No. 6 Road.

However, the RIHL president of 20 years, Doug Collins, said the current 14 skaters maximum rule and ban on competitive play has put his league on death row.

And with no date set by the City of Richmond for when the rules may change, Collins said his small league may lose teams to similar operations in Delta, where competitive adult hockey is being allowed.

“We’re basically restricted to 14 skaters and two goalies and not allowed to play any games, which means league play can’t happen,” bemoaned Collins.

“We’ve been told there might be some

changes, but we just don’t have a clue when. Other rinks in the Lower Mainland have opened up to competitive play and it puts us in a real awkward spot because our teams have an opportunity to go right now to the likes of Delta.”

According to Collins, Delta has limitations on the number of skaters allowed — 20 — but “that’s doable” with two lines per team.

“We would normally have three lines per team. Quite often guys don’t show up. But if you’re restricted to 10 players, and someone doesn’t show up, you’re in trouble.”

Collins said he’s going to have to make a decision “one way or the other. A legacy of hockey at risk.”

The city said it was aware other rinks allow competitive play, but noted those were private facilities. Spokesperson Clay Adams said the city is acutely aware time is of the essence for the likes of the RIHL, but added that there are several practical challenges that still need to be ironed out before competitive play can return safely.

Several months later, the city approved funding for the courts, which opened this summer to the public.

“The courts check all the right boxes including wheelchair accessible. Pickleball is one of the few sports where wheelchair players can compete against other wheelchair players and ambulatory players. Job well done, Richmond.”

She also loved fishing, her Chevelle, and her Camaro. Katharine was an avid traveller jetting off to Africa, Great Britain, and Mexico, as well as an Alaskan cruise. After graduating as an RN, Katharine’s career took her to jobs in Trail, Prince Rupert, and the Lower Mainland. As a retired RN, it was natural for her to be helpful to those around her. She had a heart big enough to lend a helping hand or a sympathetic ear. She was always there to help her apartment neighbours when they were sick or, sadly, closing the last chapter of their lives.

She was very open−minded and nonjudgmental.

Katharine is survived by her siblings, Ted (Barb) Diedrich, Sharon (Neil) Thomas, and Linda (Bob) French; as well as her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and grandparents. By Katharine’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Spread your angel wings, Katharine!

Betty Koyanagi filled her life with grace, artistry, laughter, and adventure. Professionally, she was proud to have been the Administrative Assistant to the President of Canada West Indies Molasses for more than a decade. When not using her fierce office skills (she used to say offhandedly that she could type over 120 wpm), she was a talented visual and textile artist, skilled and creative chef, cultivator of orchids and beautiful gardens, and avid ballroom dancer. On top of all that, she also excelled in curling, skiing, and bowling, and made incredible award-winning ice sculptures on the front lawn in Ontario. Betty was a strong and selfless mother, teaching her children to be curious, independent, and to strive for excellence.

With her late husband, Mutsuo Koyanagi, she inspired in her kids a love of travel, good food, and late night family games of poker.

Betty is survived by her children; Karen Koyanagi, Victor Koyanagi (wife, Jana), and Maria Koyanagi (husband, Arnie Yeanuzzi), grandchildren; Giovanna Deluca (husband, Pete Romano), Ryan Koyanagi, Halle Koyanagi, sister Helen Yamamoto, and brother Tom Kobayashi (wife, Kumi Kobayashi).

August 28, 1922 - September 12, 2020 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Keith Grant. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Helen, in 2003, and his son Gordon in 1995. He is survived by his son, Bill (Barbara), daughter Pattie (Andy), son Ken (Cathy), daughter-in-law Brenda, grandchildren Tara, Kim, David, Jim, Sarah, and Jessica, and 11 great grandchildren.

Born in Rokeby, Saskatchewan, Keith grew up in Edmonton, and enlisted in the army at age 17. After discharge, he and Helen moved to logging camps on Vancouver Island as Keith began his career with BC Forest Products. The family (now 6) moved to Richmond in 1956, and Keith worked at head office until his retirement. He and Helen enjoyed travelling, Gyro Club, gardening, and seeing their grandchildren grow up.

He will be remembered for his sense of humour and witty comebacks, his after lunch naps, his detailed record keeping, and his many beautiful cross-stitch works.

Margaret was born in Roslea, Northern Ireland and moved to London, England at a young age where she met and married her husband Leslie. Both Margaret and Leslie were adventurers at heart and emigrated to Philadelphia and they then moved from coast to coast settling in Richmond/South Delta, where Margaret spent her remaining years.

While the adventure took Margaret far from home, she maintained a strong connection to Ireland and was very proud of her Irish heritage.

Margaret had many careers, none more important then being a Mom to her children. Margaret enjoyed being busy and learning new arts/crafts, with her passions being gardening and knitting.

She loved music and would always welcome a chance to hit the dance floor. Margaret was a very kind person with a soft spot for animals and nature, especially her bird friends who were regular visitors to her garden. Her love of laughter and her giggle will be missed by her family and friends.
