I can’t thank our Your Best of Richmond people are onto something school enough Dear Editor,

I would like to express my gratitude towards all of the staff at James Thompson Elementary.

Especially to our principal Mr. Juhasz, our teacher Mr. Stokes, and our school secretary Mrs. Fung.

Thank you for keeping our school community and our children safe. It is very evident that you prioritize the health and safety of your students, and for that, we as parents are extremely grateful.

You make sure that we complete the Daily Health Declaration and you provide us with socially distanced classes whenever possible.

You encourage us to send our children to school wearing masks, to bring hand sanitizer, to label our own belongings and to bring paper bags to protect the masks while eating.

your hard work during this difficult time.

All of the teachers at James Thompson continue to educate their students on the safety of both themselves and the community at large, wearing PPE to serve as active role models.

The staff works hard to promote safety as well as ease the burden of this transition while keeping morale high during these turbulent times.

The teachers have also been working hard to ensure that our children are able to learn and understand all the required material for their grade level despite this year being a little different.

A huge thank you also goes out to the custodians who tirelessly clean our schools to ensure that it safe for our vulnerable youth.

For many years I have been a vocal advocate for doing whatever is possible to preserve the heritage character of Steveston Village.

So, it was notable that when 19 people were interviewed for the 2020 Best Of Richmond supplement and asked where they like to take out-of-town guests, 17 said Steveston.

Of course, the main reason these people and so many others enjoy visiting the village is its heritage character, its small town architecture, its collection of mom and pop stores, and its diversity of culinary options.

It’s a major tourist attraction (with related parking problems in the summer) and a very important social/cultural hub for those who live in the village or close to it.

Recognizing educators Raccoons running on World Teachers Day riot yet again in Richmond On Oct. 5, the Richmond School District recognizes and celebrates the many valued contributions that teachers make to public education and the lives of their students.

This year, it is especially important that we take the time to recognize and thank our teachers for their steadfast commitment to doing what is best for their students despite the extremely challenging circumstances we have all been experiencing.

Since the onset of the pandemic, I have heard about many examples of teachers who have gone above and beyond what could be expected in order to ensure the needs of their stu-

dents have been met during a very difficult time.

This year, more than ever, we have witnessed the incredible professionalism of Richmond teachers who have adjusted to new ways of teaching, found innovative ways to connect to their students and families, and have demonstrated a level of care and commitment that has made an immense difference to the lives of Richmond students.

In 2020, World Teachers’ Day will celebrate teachers with the theme “Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.”

The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements and draw attention to the voices of

teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind.

On behalf of the senior executive staff and the Board of Education, I would like to express my gratitude to all teachers who contribute to making the Richmond School District the best place to learn and lead.

Dear Editor, A couple months ago, two large adult raccoons threatened my 20-year-old daughter as she walked from her car to our house.

That wasn’t the first time that had happened.

Last Wednesday, early evening, again the same two raccoons ambushed and attacked my wife and our 14-pound Jack Russell terrier as they got out of the car in our driveway.

Both my wife and the dog ended up in emergency with severe scratches and some bite marks. We’re very lucky

we still have our dog, with an $850 vet bill.

We respect that us humans have to co-exist with wildlife and nature.

But when the wildlife population is clearly getting out of control in our neighbourhoods, the city should be assisting rather than passing the buck.

When I see young moms walking our neighbourhood streets with babies in a stroller and a small dog on a leash, I cringe to think what could happen.

$1,000 fine for defying quarantine

Richmond RCMP issued a $1,000 violation ticket to a man who refused to stay quarantined after being ordered to do so under the federal Quarantine Act. The ticket was issued on Sept. 19 after the man left the quarantine twice.

The first time, he was warned, but the second time, the ticket was issued for non-compliance, explained Richmond RCMP Supt. William Ng. “We tried the education approach, but it didn’t seem to work,” Ng told the Richmond Community COVID-19 Task Force on Tuesday.

Three weeks ago, the RCMP also issued a ticket to a badminton arena that violated compliance “on a number of occasions,” Ng explained. Stage 8 Badminton on No. 6 Road received a fine of $2,300.

COVID-19 at Canada Post An employee at the Canada Post processing centre in Richmond has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement, the corporation said it was notified of the positive test last Thursday.

The staff member last worked at the Pacific Processing Centre — at 5940 Ferguson Rd. next to YVR — on Sunday, Sept. 20.

The employee was exposed to the virus outside of work, according to the statement.

While at work, they wore a mask and practised physical distancing.

The processing centre was deep-cleaned and sanitized following Canada Post protocol.

“We are putting safety first and will continue to evaluate the situation, work with public health officials and our local joint health and safety committee and keep our employees and the public informed,” the statement reads.

17-24), bringing the total to 255 since the beginning of the pandemic.

New case numbers crept up to double digits in Richmond at the end of August — but this week’s new cases, as reported by the BC Centre for Disease Control, are the highest so far.

The previous week’s total number of new cases was 28.

On Wednesday, the provincial health officer announced 105 new cases in the past 24hour period with 69 people in hospital and 20 in intensive care across B.C. If the BC Liberals are elected in a few weeks’ time, they will tackle the Massey Tunnel replacement saga with an “aggressive plan” to deliver “traffic sanity on Highway 99.”

That was the pledge of party leader Andrew Wilkinson during a campaign stop Monday morning at London Drugs’ distribution centre in south Richmond.

Wilkinson told the Richmond News it was unacceptable for the city “to have the biggest traffic bottleneck in western Canada.”

“We will be putting forward a plan to quickly, effectively and dramatically solve the bottleneck at the George Massey tunnel,” he said.

Wilkinson pointed out there were already 13,000 pages of consultation and that all the necessary engineering work was done on the previous plan to replace the aging Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge.

BC Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson was in Richmond on Monday pledging to cut the PST for a year.

That could mean resurrecting the “shovelready” bridge, he said, as that design has already gone through the environmental assessment process.

Last fall, Metro Vancouver’s board of directors endorsed an eight-lane immersed tube tunnel option for the new crossing.

A business case, with the chosen option, was expected to be announced this fall.

Meanwhile, the BC Liberals have claimed the 10-lane bridge would be three-quarters built by now.

Horgan rolls in, NDP roll out candidates in a time of “major crisis,” leaders are asked to step up.

BC NDP candidates were lining up this week in Richmond ridings as the leader of the party, John Horgan, dropped by for a photo opportunity at Minoru Park.

Richmond city councillor Kelly Greene announced Monday she will take another shot at capturing the Richmond-Steveston seat after running against John Yap in 2017 and losing by 1,790 votes.

This time, she will be up against BC Liberal candidate Matt Pitcairn, who recently stepped down as CEO of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

While Greene told the Richmond News earlier that she didn’t plan to run, she said she had a “heart-to-heart” conversation with a friend about women and leadership. She then got a call from Horgan about running.

There has been online criticism of Pitcairn because he lives in Tsawwassen — he grew up in Steveston but moved out five years ago with his young family — however, equally there has been online criticism of Greene, who said publicly after winning municipally in 2018 that she would “respect” the fact she was elected to council.

Greene told the News Richmond has always been her “number one priority” and,

“For me, it’s about service to the community — where can I do good work?” she said.

Johal-Singh rematch In Richmond-Queensborough, there will be rematch between the two main candidates of 2017 who were separated in the polls by just 134 votes — Aman Singh announced over the weekend he would run again, trying to unseat the incumbent MLA Jas Johal.

Singh is a human rights lawyer who hails from Hong Kong but has lived in Richmond for 20 years.

“As a lawyer, I have represented and fought for the underdogs in court cases all the way to the Supreme Court,” Singh said in a statement.

Richmond community activist Henry Yao is running in the provincial election in Richmond South Centre as the NDP candidate. His BC Liberal opponent is current Richmond city councillor Alexa Loo. Yao was born in Taiwan and is fluent in both English and Mandarin. He has lived in Richmond since he was 11. He has a BA in psychology from UBC. Yao led one of Richmond’s largest youth volunteer programs and has worked for the Richmond Youth Service Agency, now called Connections Community Services.

“Our kids deserve an affordable, quality education that opens up opportunities for them,” Yao said.

The NDP hadn’t announced a candidate for Richmond North Centre by the News’ deadline. The seat is currently held by BC Liberal Teresa Wat.

Police appeal for Man with assault rifle dashcam footage arrested in city centre Kirsten Clarke

Police say they have identified a new area of interest in Richmond related to a recent murder in Vancouver and are asking for dashcam video to help their investigation.

Iqubal Grewal, 23, was found dead in front of a house near Knight Street and 64th Avenue in South Vancouver Sept. 16, around 7:30 p.m., after police responded to “multiple 911 calls of shots fired.”

Vancouver police (VPD) said they believe the murder is related to gang activity.

near Kartner Road and Westminster Highway in Richmond.

The VPD previously appealed for dashcam video from that area.

Police are now looking for dashcam video captured between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sept. 16, in the area of Westminster Highway between Knight Street and Nelson Road.

“Investigators are making progress in this case and are thankful for the video they have received from the public so far,” said Const.

Richmond Mounties say a man they arrested earlier this month was found carrying an AR-15-style assault rifle.

During a routine, targeted patrol in Richmond city centre, police came across a man who was known to have two outstanding warrants, according to RCMP. While officers arrested the man “without incident,” they found an AR-15-style assault rifle during a subsequent search of his belongings.

James Bonney was held in custody and has been charged with seven counts, including possessing a prohibited weapon, device or ammunition without a license and using, carrying or handling a firearm or prohibited weapon in a careless manner or without reasonable precautions for the safety of others.

Vancouver Coastal Health has added two Richmond schools to its COVID-19 exposure list — L’Ecole des Navigateurs and BC Muslim School.

The health authority issued an exposure notice on Monday for the BC Muslim School, at 12300 Blundell Rd. The dates of exposure are Sept. 11 to Sept. 18.

Exposure notifications are posted when a staff member or student tests positive for COVID-19, and public health is unable to

“directly reach all close contacts in a timely manner,” according to a statement on VCH’s school exposures webpage.

“If you or your child have been identified as a positive COVID-19 case or close contact, be assured that VCH’s public health team will contact you directly and provide further instruction,” VCH said.

Previously, VCH issued an exposure notice for L’Ecole des Navigateurs for Sept.

McMath parents were sent a letter from that school, stating there had been an exposure but McMath is not listed on VCH’s website.

More school staff on way

Richmond School District is spending $1.65 million on transitional learning teachers and $2.7 million for custodial staff out of the $7.4 million it got from the federal government’s “Safe Return to Class Fund.”

There will also be four staff hired to support transitional learning — remote tutorial, resource and counselling support — to the tune of $400,000, another $300,000 for two tech support workers and various hardware and software for remote learning.

The only budget item for alternative and Aboriginal Education programs is $30,000 for substitute teachers.

The spending plan includes $335,000 for learning resources and supplies for remote and outdoor learning.

In addition to the money for custodial staff, $500,000 is being budgeted for cleaning equipment, and $500,000 to improve ventilation.

Man jailed for 12 years for cocaine smuggling role sentence.

A Richmond man has been jailed for more than 12 years for his part in smuggling $7.5 million worth of cocaine into Canada, found hidden in an underwater chamber on a container ship in Nova Scotia in 2018.

Matthew Ross Lambert, 36, was sentenced last week in Halifax Provincial Court. Judge Elizabeth Buckle found him guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine, conspiracy to traffic cocaine and attempt to trafficking the drugs. Buckle also stayed a charge for attempted possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Darcy Bailey, a 48-year-old Fort St. John man was also found guilty of those same crimes earlier this month, and will be sentenced later this year. The two other men co-accused with Lambert — Dangis Seinauskas and Nelson Alvarado-Calles of Ontario — were acquitted of all charges.

“They again tried to recover the cocaine there, but the authorities intervened and Mr. Lambert was arrested,” said Buckle.

“The Crown did not prove more than that Mr. Lambert agreed to facilitate the importation of the cocaine into Canada by recovering the drugs and transporting them,” she said. “However, in doing so, he became a part of a sophisticated international commercial enterprise.”

While Lambert wasn’t at the top of the hierarchy, nor simply a drug mule, he was crucial to the recovery team which was itself crucial to the whole operation, said Buckle.

Its purchase price was around $1 million (if purchased in Colombia) and it had a resale value of between $6.9 million and $7.5 million (if sold at the kilogram level in Montreal).

Some kids spend a lot of time in their rooms talking to friends online and on their phones — this is normal behaviour, Swartz said, but if they isolate, close the door and stay in a dark room that can be sign of some larger problem.

Fortunately, however, children respond “extremely well” to therapy, Swartz said, unlike adults who are often distracted in therapy by day-to-day responsibilities.

“The positive thing is we can very effectively treat anxiety in children at almost any age,” Swartz

said.

“They respond extraordinarily well to counselling, to cognitive behavioural therapy.”

Swartz recommended approaching one’s family doctor who can figure out if their child’s behaviour is normal or not, but teachers and counsellors at school are also able to help.

That is one of the reasons why going to school is so important now, Swartz explained, because there vulnerable students see several responsible adults every day who can look out for them and pick up on if something is amiss.

Richmond non-profit societies can now apply for the city’s annual community grant program.

Applications must be within the categories of arts and culture, childcare, health, social and safety, and parks, recreation and community events.

Swartz said there’s a lot of help available for families who are worried about their kids’ mental health, although, like everything in the health sector, waitlists can be long.

Richmond has a Child and Adolescent Program (CAP) where families can drop in to seek help.

Runner creates virtual Boston Marathon Patricia Stapleton’s dream of running the Boston Marathon was first postponed, and then cancelled altogether, due to COVID-19.

With virtual runs, she said, you start your GPS when you start running and don’t stop it until the end, at 42.2 kilometres — meaning all the time spent at traffic lights counts in the run. All in all, Stapleton finished with a time of 5 hours, 30 minutes, but she said she felt she could have done it in 4 hours, 45 minutes if she was on a “closed course” rather than the street.

Despite that, the 72-year-old former Richmond school teacher ran the virtual alternative on Sept. 20 (one week late because of the wildfire smoke), running the full 42.2 kilometres through Richmond, over the Canada Line bridge into Vancouver, and back.

While this year’s marathon was virtual, Stapleton was far from alone as she ran the route she mapped out.

“Nobody runs a marathon alone,” she said, explaining that a large part of running a marathon is the adrenalin and energy you pick up from other people.

Patricia Stapleton tempered the disappointment of not running in the Boston Marathon by creating her own route in Richmond. started, on Hollycroft Drive in Richmond, as friends and family cheered her on.

“It wasn’t Boston in Boston, but it was absolutely amazing,” said Stapleton. “My friends turned it into an amazing event, it was fantastic. So, I was really touched by all of them.”

A virtual race is harder, she said, as you’re out on the street and always need to be alert. There’s also traffic lights to contend with, which can impact your race time. For example, she said during her marathon she waited a total14 minutes at the lights at No. 3 Road, near Bridgeport Road.

When she stepped out her door at 7 a.m., there were people outside waiting to see her off. Her running friends also set up cheering groups and water stations along the route, and also joined her in running throughout the marathon, so that Stapleton never had to run alone.

Stapleton said the “coolest thing” was when they came off the Canada Line bridge on the way back, and stopped for photos. While a number of her friends had gathered there for her, there were also some cyclists who decided to wait until they came off.

“I just feel really blessed with the encouragement I got,” she said. “When I was disappointed (the marathon was cancelled), people were there saying, ‘It’s okay, it will come again.’”

Immigration consultant hopes conference will ease stress

A Richmond-based immigration consultant is behind a nationwide virtual conference to discuss challenges her industry is facing during the pandemic.

Zheng told the Richmond News many consultants felt overwhelmed and a bit lost when the pandemic forced most businesses to shut down in mid-March.

According to conference organizer Lily Zheng, the event was set up to address concerns from colleagues and to support each other during “unprecedented” times.

“We were busy working on many cases during that time, but the temporary closure of the visa application centres put a halt on our cases. And many applicants were left

hanging in the air,” said Zheng.

Zheng said the slowdown has inevitably affected newcomers’ arrival to Canada, adding to the stress and anxiety already being experienced by immigrants and international students waiting for their applications to be approved.

“The most pressing case is a few overseas

visitors, who were stuck here following flight cancellations due to COVID-19, but their visitor visas are going to expire.”

Student celebrates Steveston community with music video

Finding an original song for a school project wasn’t too difficult for a Richmond student whose mom is the vocalist of local band Urban Myth.

Noble Bhathena, a Grade 12 McMath student, wanted to create a video to not only celebrate Steveston winning the recent CBC Best Neighbourhood contest, but also

A Richmond biomedical company is in a race to create a rapid, cheap and portable saliva test for COVID-19 to help open up the economy and give people more freedom to move.

Rashid Bux — president and CEO of BioMark Diagnostics near Shell and Cambie roads — is hopeful the biomedical technology his company has been using, largely in cancer detection, will be able to quickly test for COVID-19.

Currently, screening is done with a nasal swab and the results can take up to two days to come back.

The goal for BioMark — and its affiliated company Bio-Stream — is to have a saliva test that gives results in 30 seconds and costs just $1 to take.

To identify the COVID-19 virus, Biomark’s scientists are shining a high-energy laser beam through a solution to see how it refracts — that is, how it scatters.

The beauty of the system is that it’s portable, fast and accurate, Bux said.

Because every molecular structure — which make up viruses, bacteria and other micro-organisms — is different and has its own “signature,” it will scatter light differently from other micro-organisms, Bux explained.

BioMark, which has been in Richmond since 2013 and in the Lower Mainland since 2006, has partnered with university scientists to develop the rapid test.

“When you pass light through, it reflects on the chemical bonds ... and every material will have a different pattern of scattering,” Bux said.

Coupled with the rapid test would be an app that gives the person tested a green light if they’re negative and a red light if they’re positive.

Using artificial intelligence, the data from the light scattering is being uploaded and fine-tuned so that each individual disease,

The tests could be used wherever there are normally large crowds, like at the airport, sports events, on mass transit and in schools, he added, so they know when entering if they have COVID019.

“It’s also good to have (as) a first-line of defence for health-care workers — they’ve gone through hell in the last six months,” Bux said.

Philip Wang is usually busy carrying trays and plates by day at the hotpot restaurant he runs at Lansdowne Centre.

But by night and on the weekends, Wang takes out his camera kit to capture the beauty of people.

And that’s because, while the restaurant he manages and thousands like it struggle with the ongoing pandemic, his new photo shoot business has seen

the appointments flooding in, with bookings stacked up until mid-October.

“Photography and shooting videos have been my passion for as long as 10 years,” said Wang.

“I spent the past few years of learning studio shooting and saving money to purchase equipment to improve my craft.”

The restaurant work kept Wang busy all the time, however, limiting his ability to create a portfolio, an important tool to highlight your ability and skills to potential customers.

“I told many people that I am good at

taking photos…They thought I was just joking around. They didn’t have much trust in me during that time,” he added.

With businesses being forced to close due to the pandemic, it turned out Wang had more time to pursue his dream and build up that portfolio.

And he even found another professional photographer Carmi Zhang, a graduate from the Academy of Art University majoring in filmmaking, as his business partner.

“We had no place to go during May and June, since everything was forced to shut down, including the restaurant I

am working at,” said Wang.

“Therefore, Zhang and I met each other every day to take hundreds of photos and videos for our friends or models.

We have collected enough portfolio during these two months.

“We selected only a few shots from thousands of photos we took. We spent countless hours working in our studio to adjust photo lighting and colour and editing videos together.

However, it has been so much fun to showcase different people’s personalities from a still image or a 10-second video.”

When Wesley Chiu was named to Skate Canada’s 2019-20 NextGen team, he wasn’t even able to be on the ice.

For two and a half months, the 15-yearold international figure skater, and member of the Connaught Skating Club, was unable to practice with rinks closed due to COVID-19.

Despite that, he received “remarkable” acknowledgement from officials at the NextGen camp, held over the Sept. 18th weekend at Burnaby Scotia Barn, said Keegan Murphy, director of skating programs at Connaught and Chiu’s coach.

Chiu was named to the team in April.

At the camp, Skate Canada officials noticed a “remarkable improvement in (Chiu’s) technical advancement, along with an improved engagement to the perfor-

mance side of his skating,” said Murphy.

“To receive such positive feedback from Skate Canada, after that break, that just says a lot about Wesley’s commitment to his training even with the rink being shut down,” he added.

That weekend in Burnaby is likely the only time the camp will be held this year, said Murphy. Typically, NextGen camps are held twice a year in Toronto, in June and October, amid various competitions.
