Price to pay for freedom of the press Eve Edmonds

In 2000, Jineth Bedoya Lima was a reporter for a newspaper in Colombia, reporting on drug cartels and government corruption — not exactly a soft beat.

One day, she was told she could speak to a source, but it was a setup. Instead, she was abducted, raped, beaten, threatened with her life and told to quit doing her job.

Two weeks later, she was back at her desk reporting on drug cartels and government corruption.

Two years after that, again, she was captured and beaten, and this time held for eight days. Soon after she was let go, she was (you guessed it) back at her desk reporting on drug cartels and government corruption — although this time she went one better, including rape as a systematic form of oppression. After her first abduction, that particular assault had still been too painful to talk about.

Three weeks ago, she was awarded the Golden Pen of Freedom by the WAN/IFRA (World Newspapers Association), an organization founded in 1948 to advocate for press freedom.

I mention all this because this is National Newspaper Week in Canada, so an apt time to talk about the state of the industry.

Granted, Canada is a long way from Colombia — not just geographically. However, an attack on a journalist anywhere is an attack on journalists everywhere, as a previous Golden Pen winner said.

After Bedoya was awarded her Golden Pen, WAN/IFRA hosted a panel that included herself, co-founder of the Philippine online news website Rappler (and my personal hero) Maria Ressa and VP for GroupM Brand Safety, John Montgomery.

The trio talked about threats to press freedom. What they identified as the two most critical ones were not assaults on journalists or even censorship, but rather social media and a reduction in advertising — separate but related issues.

This stuff is hard for mainstream media to combat. Salacious lies travel a lot faster than balanced fact-based news, and advertisers tend go where the eyeballs go. This has left many local papers financially decimated, while Facebook and the like rake in mind-boggling profits.

Facebook, Twitter and WeChat are great places to connect, but they’re also remarkably fertile ground for sowing lies and cultivating fake news. The fact they are governed entirely by algorithms as opposed to thinking human beings who make mistakes but, for the most part, have a commitment to the integrity of facts and the ideals of press freedom, has had consequences.

They include filter bubbles and astroturfing, the practice of manipulating algorithms to make an issue/story appear grassroots

Besides, there is more than one way to kill press freedom. Every year, Reporters Without Borders compiles the Press Freedom Index, where it ranks 180 countries on how free journalists are to do their jobs.

This year, Canada ranks 16, not terrible but leaving room to improve.

While murdering and imprisoning reporters will lower a country’s ranking, so will state monopoly, concentration of ownership, self-censorship and, what is probably

Ironically, some of the very folks, who usually decry government censorship, are now calling for greater regulation of Big Tech.

It might sound hypocritical, but press freedom doesn’t mean a free-for-all. It means a commitment to truth and accountability.

But even without regulations, (most) people aren’t stupid. Throughout the pandemic, when balanced, fact-checked information has been critical, Richmond News’ readership has grown significantly. In fact, we’ve had people contacting us saying, “I saw this on social media, is it true?”

These are tough times for all, but I have to believe in our readers and those in our industry (such as Bedoya) who hold firm to the ideals of a free press.

Dear Editor, The NDP have not held a Richmond seat since Harold Steves’ 1975 loss to Social Credit’s Ernie LeCours — so long ago, it is almost beyond human memory.

That long NDP drought might well come to a sudden end on Oct. 24. Richmond-Steveston is the riding to watch. Four-time winner John Yap is not running. It is an opportunity for renewal.

BC Liberal support is slipping, from 52 per cent in 2013, it dropped to 47 per cent in 2017.

Most importantly, in this election, Richmond-Steveston has no Green Party candidate. Just seven per cent of the vote separated Liberal and NDP last time, while Green received 13 per cent. Where will that 13 per cent Green vote go this time?

Sidewalk saga Kids avoid Dear Editor,

I live on the north side of Steveston Highway, three houses east of Lassam. My evening walks entail walking west on Steveston highway to Railway then north to Williams and back in the reverse direction.

The sidewalk on the north side of Steveston from Lassam to Railway is closed due to construction work (Anthem Properties) on the same side of the road from Lassam to O’Hare’s Pub. I am now forced to walk via Lassam to Williams to Railway to Steveston.

It would be beneficial to have at least one Richmond seat on the government side of the legislature.

On reaching Steveston, I have to cross over to the south side of the road due to the closed sidewalk at O’Hare’s Pub.

In our system of government, warming an opposition bench yields no local benefits. Richmond lacks effective local representation in both Victoria and Ottawa. Oct. 24 will likely change that.

Walking on the south side of Steveston is no problem as the sidewalk is clear until I reach Swallow Drive.

However the curbside slab is sloping and sometimes covered with moss, and wet during rain. From 5411 Steveston Hwy. to Lassam, the level sidewalk is blocked by the overgrown hedge along the sidewalk. This makes it necessary for a pedestrian to walk on the sometimes slippery sidewalk.

Walking along the sloping sidewalk is dangerous as it could result in a pedestrian losing balance and falling in the way of traffic on Steveston Highway.

I urge the City of Richmond to take action to ensure that the whole of the sidewalk on the south side is available to pedestrians during the closure of the sidewalk on the north side of Steveston Highway.

We go for a walk each day. Today we happened to leave about 2:45 p.m., walking past an elementary and a high school, passing many kids.

The observation would be that school-age people don’t know how to social distance.

When we pass other adults, most move over or go single file and keep their distance when passing.

We passed very few kids that made any effort at distancing. In nearly every case we had to go into the street or off onto the grass so that the kids in groups of two or three could keep their position on the sidewalk or path.

It doesn’t bode well for the pandemic. We finally went into a subdivision to avoid them.

COVID-19 Masks mandated by city cases drop Public, staff asked to wear face coverings in municipal facilities Maria Rantanen

There have been 16 new COVID-19 cases detected in Richmond in the past week (Sept. 24 to Oct. 1), bringing the total to 271 since the start of the pandemic.

This is the lowest weekly total in Richmond in recent weeks after case numbers crept up to double digits at the end of August. It follows the previous week’s (Sept. 17 to 24) record high of 36 cases.

However, new case numbers continue to be high across B.C., with the province reporting 161 cases Friday.

On Tuesday, there were 1,384 active cases in B.C. Seventy-one people were in hospital, with 16 in intensive care.

Richmond residents can get tested for COVID-19 at the Richmond Assessment Centre at 6820 Gilbert Rd., in the parking lot of the Richmond Tennis Club.

“No shoes, no shirt, no service” is morphing into “no mask, no service” at most of Richmond’s public facilities.

A motion to require the public and staff to wear masks in city-run buildings was supported by all of Richmond council at Monday’s committee meeting. Exceptions would be for people with disabilities, children younger than five, those doing vigorous physical activity as well as children and caregivers in childcare settings.

For those who don’t have a mask, city staff will provide them — but it’s recommended the public bring a mask when entering a city-run facility — and those who don’t comply will be refused service.

Greens, Tories name Libs pitch bridge candidates for Oct. 24 Valerie Leung

The eight NDP and Liberal candidates in Richmond ridings will be joined by four other candidates — two Greens, one Conservative and one independent — on the Oct. 24 ballot.

Kay Hale, running for the Conservative Party of BC, and Earl Einarson, with the Green Party of BC, will be on the ballot in the riding of Richmond-Queensborough.

Einarson is First Nations from the Ktunaxa band but grew up in Richmond after being part of the “sixties’ scoop.”

He said, as First Nations, he brings an important voice to the Green party.

“I do believe First Nations voices should be directly in the fray and BC Greens align with me so well,” he said.

Hale calls the Conservative Party of BC “truly centre right,” and points out the party is not “beholden” to any lobby groups.

“B.C. Conservatives don’t lobby for any

special interest group,” she said.

Vince Li, who is running as an independent in Richmond-Steveston, said his focus is partially on improving the education system, but he also wants to help new immigrants get involved in elections and society at large.

“We want to be involved but we don’t know how,” he said.

The second Green party candidate in Richmond is Vernon Wang, who is running in Richmond North Centre — currently held by BC Liberal Teresa Wat. Wang, who is a licenced financial advisor, said he likes many of the new ideas held the Green party, a vision that distinguishes itself from “traditional” political parties. “(Green) values match my interests and my values,” Wang said.

He is especially interested in participatory democracy espoused by the Green party.

An eight-lane tunnel or a 10-lane bridge — these are the dueling visions to fix gridlock at the George Massey crossing of the two parties vying for power in the provincial election.

The BC Liberals announced Monday they will build a 10-lane bridge “immediately” if elected, instead of continuing the NDP’s plan to build an eight-lane submerged tube tunnel.

The 10-lane bridge was the BC Liberals’ original plan when they were in government, but when the NDP replaced them, they scrapped the plans and went back to the drawing board.

The 10-lane bridge would also “align with community plans,” according to the announcement, although Richmond city council opposed the 10-lane bridge, especially the large interchange planned in south Richmond.

The NDP, however, say their plans for the new tunnel are “on track” and a final approval is expected by the end of the year.

However, if any changes to the plan were to be made it would “risk major delays, risk losing federal financing, and set the project back years.”

Alexa Loo, BC Liberal candidate in Richmond South Centre, told the Richmond News that they have “a plan” compared to the NDP. “We need to move goods and people and I think the bridge is the way to do it. We’ve had one approved and there’s $195 million worth of pre-load and everything all ready to go. I think it’s time to get moving on it.”

In an email, Henry Yao, NDP candidate for Richmond South Centre, said the BC Liberals’ plan for a 10-lane bridge was announced without consultation with the City of Richmond and that their option would “turn Richmond into a parking lot” and take “us back to square one.”

Anyone voting at a polling station on Oct. 24 can get a free pencil to take home. Or you can just bring your own pen or pencil.

Jackie Asante, the district electoral officer in the riding of Richmond-Steveston, said pencils used for marking ballots won’t be re-used by Elections BC at polling stations in order to reduce touch points during the COVID-19 pandemic — “it will be your souvenir,” she said.

There will also be masks, face shields, plexiglass, gloves and sanitation stations for staff to use in their effort to curb the spread of the virus during voting.

Voters are encouraged to wear masks, and they won’t be asked

to remove them while casting a ballot.

And, instead of signing a declaration to state their eligibility to vote in the riding, voters will make an oral declaration that will be recorded by an election worker, explained Asante.

These are just some of the details Elections BC officials have had to think through as they run an election during a pandemic.

This election, the focus was on finding spacious venues for voting to allow for physical distancing, Asante explained, and there will be fewer officials watching the voting in order to reduce physical contact.

Ballots sent through the mail, however, need to be received by 8 p.m. Oct. 24, so Elections BC spokesperson Andrew Watson recommends getting them into the mail by Oct. 17.

If voters have mail-in ballots after Oct. 17, they can fill them out and drop them off at a district electoral office in-person until 4 p.m. on voting day.

Mail-in ballots can be filled out with either the name of the candidate in that riding or the party, explained Asante. But writing the name of the leader of a party won’t be accepted by Elections BC because they are not the candidate in that riding.

If there is any issue around the interpretation of a name, it’s up to the district electoral officer

to determine the “intent of the voter,” Asante added.

Mail-in ballots can be requested by phone or online until Oct. 17 (go to elections.bc.ca for more information), but anyone can pick up a voting package from a district electoral office right up to voting day.

Advance voting takes place on seven days prior to the election, from Oct. 15 to Oct. 21.

Voting can also be done at district electoral offices until 4 p.m.

those who really needed it. They’re using the public’s own money to bribe them during an unnecessary pandemic election,” he said, speaking during a media availability in downtown Vancouver Tuesday afternoon.

Johal asked why the benefit wasn’t offered in March.

On Tuesday, BC NDP Leader John Horgan announced a re-elected government would provide a one-time, $1,000 COVID-19 recovery benefit for all families with income under $125,000.

“That money was sitting there in March.

In March, when people needed help,” he said, adding it was “unconscionable” that the money was held back.

The benefit would go to others on a sliding scale up to a household income of $175,000.

However, Aman Singh, who is running against Johal for the NDP, said the Liberals “just don’t get it.”

Meanwhile, single people making under $62,000 would receive a $500 recovery benefit, with others getting help up to an income of $87,000.

“They may think that this election is all about political gain,” he said. “The reality is families are struggling…I’ve spoken to so many people in Richmond-Queensborough who are uncertain about not only the future, but the present, given the pandemic.”

But Jas Johal, who is running for re-election in Richmond-Queensborough for the BC Liberals, said he was skeptical the platform was put together over the past two weeks.

“It shows the NDP has held back help for

Singh said he would highlight the 10year cancer plan for Richmond residents, in addition to the $3 billion recovery investment, over the next three years, to build new schools and hospitals.

“Those are all things that we require in Richmond,” he said.

Also included in the NDP’s platform are a rent freeze until 2022; a second medical school in B.C.; and free transit for children under 12.

Johal also criticized the NDP’s platform for making no mention of the promised acute care tower for Richmond Hospital and a second hospital for Surrey, the UBC-

Broadway extension or funding for the tourism sector.

“There is absolutely no plan here to grow the economy,” said Johal.

He also said there was no plan to replace the Massey Tunnel in the NDP’s platform.

On Monday, the BC Liberals announced they would resurrect their plan for a 10lane bridge to replace the aging Massey crossing.

However, Singh said Richmond Hospital is already in the works and was included in the 2020 provincial budget. Meanwhile, he added, it’s “full steam ahead” on the toll-free tunnel replacement.

The BC Liberals have also promised to cut provincial sales tax for a year, and after that, would bring it back at a reduced rate of three per cent, in an effort to help the economy recover from COVID-19.

The Liberals’ platform has yet to be announced, however, Johal said parts of it are being released day by day, for example, the Massey Tunnel and PST announcements.

“Our kids don’t even go to that school, they go to a public one. But because I have asthma, it’s safer for us all that they learn at home just now.

The woman, who asked not to be named, told the Richmond News she was shocked when the manager of their apartment building, near Blundell and No. 2 roads, shouted a question at them last Tuesday afternoon.

“And even if I’d said yes, they do go to that school, what was he going to do? This is a scary thing, that people are thinking like this and think it’s OK to ask these questions.”

When the manager was told the couple’s children are being home-schooled right now, he shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

The woman said her husband asked the manager who had told him about her family, as he seemed to not know much about the VCH alert.

“We have lived here for 10 years. It’s a horrible thought that a neighbour may have reported us to the manager,” the woman added.

A 49-year-old Bellingham, Wash., man, who crossed the U.S. border by boat to meet his girlfriend in Surrey, has been fined $1,000 under the federal Quarantine Act.

He was also required to pay an additional $1,000 to get his boat back, and was ordered to leave Canada immediately.

RCMP say the man failed to report his crossing into Canada and did not meet entry requirements under the current quarantine restrictions.

The Canada-U.S. border has been closed to all non-essential travel since March, due to COVID-19. That closure was recently extended to at least Oct. 21.

On Sept. 27, RCMP officers with the Federal Border Integrity ShipRider program were patrolling along the CanadaU.S. marine border in the Southern Gulf Islands region, when they came across a Seasport cabin cruiser out of Bellingham, anchored in the Crescent Beach Channel near Blackie Spit in South Surrey.

The Bellingham man was aboard the boat with his girlfriend, a 50-year-old woman from Surrey.

RCMP say the man left his home port that morning and picked up his girlfriend at Elgin Park Marina in Surrey.

However, the man failed to report to officials that he had crossed the marine border into Canada.

After consulting with the Canada Border Services Agency, police arrested the man under the Customs Act and seized his vessel for “failure to report inwards.”

A search of the man’s vessel confirmed the trip was “simply personal in nature,” and no other criminality was involved, according to RCMP. The man was fined $1,000 for contravening the Quarantine Act. He was released without further charges.

Meanwhile, the Surrey woman was taken to the nearby Crescent Beach Marina, where she arranged a ride back to her vehicle.

Police say her plan was to self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19 if she develops any symptoms over the next 14 days.

RCMP say boaters found illegally in Canadian waters may face fines, seizure of their vessels and/or criminal charges.

Further, failing to report in and other contraventions of the Customs Act may make foreign nationals inadmissible to Canada.

An acknowledgment is done at the beginning of Richmond Board of Education meetings, stating that the city is located on the “traditional and unceded territory” of First Nations people of the henqeminem language group. Community activist Karina Reid has been asking why the city doesn’t do the same.

When asked by the Richmond News, however, why there isn’t an Indigenous land acknowledgment at the beginning of council meetings, Brodie said it is because the city is in “serious litigation” with various First Nations, and “you don’t acknowledge what might be important to the subject of litigation.”

To me, it’s like The Cowichan First Nations are currently in court with the City of Richmond about land in southeast Richmond — 780 acres near Triangle Beach.

Furthermore, there is a dormant lawsuit between the city and the Musqueam First Nations regarding the Garden City Lands.

To educate the public on First Nations history in Richmond, Reid said she’d also like to see more information on the city’s website, as she’s concerned Richmond residents are “oblivious” to it.

“To me, it’s like erasing history,” she told the Richmond News.

Reid has approached city staff about why a land acknowledgment isn’t part of council meetings as well as questioning the amount of Indigenous history available on the website.

However, she was told it was because Richmond is a diverse city and didn’t want to name a certain group.

City spokesperson Clay Adams pointed out there are 150 ethnic origins in the city, more than 100 languages spoken in Richmond, 60 per cent of residents were born outside Canada and three-quarters of the population are visible minorities.

“Our website ‘history’ page is merely an extremely brief snapshot of the diverse cultures and history that made Richmond what it is today,” Adams explained.

Richmond Food Bank had a record Thanksgiving food drive this year with 18,000 pounds of food collected, despite some COVID-19 restrictions.

The number of Richmondites accessing the food bank has risen during the pandemic — early on, up to 12 new households were registering per week — and the food bank had to close some of its satellite locations because of provincial health orders.

But the community still came out and donated 7,000 more pounds of food at this year’s Thanksgiving drive than last year — this and other food drives leading up to Christmas will keep their shelves stocked well into spring, explained the food bank’s executive director Hajira Hussain.

Highly-regarded Richmond composer and pianist Linda Niamath has passed away, age 81.

As well as being recognized for the 11 albums of piano music she wrote, Niamath became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2018.

“Our volunteers knew a lot of our clients by name — it was a real family,” Hussain said.

Indeed, several generations of children around the world would have learned to play her expressive pieces at their piano lessons, the latter of which she was also renowned for, offering tuition from her home.

After growing up in Vancouver and then raising a family in Richmond with her husband of 55 years, Kent, Niamath was an elementary school teacher for eight years, and later taught piano from a studio in her home.

The science of happiness is the theme running through a new calendar that prods people into engaging in short, daily activities that can boost their happiness hormones.

When the pandemic turned everything upside down in March, Trina Kushnerik, a UBC Okanagan grad, started working on her project, “A Happier Year.” It’s a calendar with 366 days of science-backed tips to help you live a happier life.

“The pandemic has been hard on everyone, even if people don’t realize it,” said Kushnerik, who is originally from Richmond.

“I realized thousands of researchers were figuring out what makes us happy, but this information is often stuck in boring academic papers. I wanted to find a fun way to seamlessly slip research-based activities into your day.”

“The calendar allows you to focus on one small action per day. You don’t have to absorb everything all at once. Each activity doesn’t take much time either, so you don’t have much of an excuse not to do it.”

“I was inspired by the natural environment around me. I’ve included cactus, koi fish, ferns and dragonflies. I had a lot of friends suggest ideas of illustrations they wanted to see in the publication too,” said Kushnerik.

Now that the writing, illustration and design are done, Kushnerik is looking to publish the calendar.

To make that happen, Kushnerik launched a fundraising campaign on Oct. 6 via Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website that allows people to share their ideas.

Kushnerik said her goal is to reach $10,000 so she can begin printing her calendars.

“I think it’s important to zoom out and recognize when our own homes change or re-develop, that they become new homes for new families and previous memories to follow.”

“My husband and I went through all (the photos) and it made sense for us to tell a story about the farm through them,” she said.

Marlene Rodgers, a filmmaker who grew up in Richmond, takes a walk down memory lane through her film Dreams of the Dead as she reminisces about her childhood family farm and her late grandmother.

Rodgers’ vast list of memories of her grandparents’ farm, dating back to the 1940s, is as big as the “field she used to roam around in.”

However, the traumatic passing of her grandmother and the loss of the farm became the spark Rodgers needed to produce Dreams of the Dead.

The documentary uses a combination of old photographs and footage of the

The documentary, said Rodgers, will hopefully resonate with Richmond residents who have experienced a change in their neighbourhoods.

“As much as we want to hold on, there is always the letting go part that needs to happen too,” she said.

In addition to the documentary, Rodgers and her team started “The Memory Project” where she hopes people will share their own stories.

The project aims to connect people with their past and their special memories, while reminiscing and accepting that change does not mean forgetting.

Richmond photographer Denis Beauvais has, and he’s shared a selection of his favourite shots captured over the last 30 days of industry flowing up and down the channel.

Beauvais, who in his working life focuses on wildlife and aviation, recently moved from Tsawwassen to Richmond.

And both he and his camera lens have been captivated by the daily traffic on that stretch of the river.

“As a new project, I have been documenting the river traffic: container ships, car transporters, tug barges, government hovercrafts and numerous private vessels, and positioning them against the Fraser River, Deas Island Park and Mt. Baker,” Beauvais told the Richmond News.

“Since moving to Riverport Way, I am amazed at the volume and variety of marine traffic.”

Neilson said, with the new online and delivery model — with which all contact details will remain the same — he’s hoping to scale down his load to a three-day working week.

For the popular retro record store on Second Avenue at Bayview Street will soon be no more.

But don’t panic just yet, owner of 15 years Frankie Neilson said he’s going to stay open for the next six months — until the lease runs out on March 31, 2021 — so his loyal customers get comfortable with the fact he’s taking his entire business to an online and delivery model.

Ironically, Neilson told the Richmond News that since the pandemic kicked off, there have more customers popping in for a browse and a chat than ever before.

He said, at age 67 however, it’s time to dial it down and create more time to dance to his own tunes, rather than spend it sourcing music from around the globe for others.

The one thing that both he and his manager of 13 years, David Milner, will absolutely miss is the interaction with their customers, many of whom they’ve gotten to know really well over the years.

The University of British Columbia will help select the test used in a new COVID-19 rapid testing study, Vancouver International Airport and WestJet announced last week.

“They (UBC) really have the experts to be able to advise us on which test is going to have the highest efficacy, which one is going to give us the quality of results that we need in a short timeframe, because of course that’s the objective for travel,” YVR CEO Tamara Vrooman told the Richmond News.

As part of the pilot program — first announced in late August — passengers could receive their test results prior to boarding their flight, said Vrooman.

The program will be available to WestJet passengers on select flights de-

Vrooman said the partners are aiming to get the pilot study up and running at the airport next month.

Data collected from the study will help inform protocol at YVR and WestJet, and will also be shared with health authorities to support public health knowledge and decision-making around COVID-19 testing and tracing in B.C. “We do believe that testing is going to be part of the reality of travel and certainly of operating an airport for the foreseeable future, so we also want to understand in our own operations how best to efficiently and safely administer (the test),” said Vrooman.

The next step in the project will be asking passengers to share their thoughts, perceptions and willingness to undergo voluntary COVID-19 testing.
