Allies: Speak up Dear Editor,

Re: “Richmond News reader challenges front page story,” Opinion, Jan. 28 Thank you, Eve Edmonds for using your platform in calling these people out. You are acting as an ally, and most importantly an active bystander and I wanted to thank you. We need more people to speak up against racism.

I am on the anti-racism committee at the Richmond School District and I am also a student pursing a degree in Social Justice, so I study and talk about critical race theory a lot. Over the last few months, I have witnessed several forms of racism towards several of my friends.

Many times in person, online or more common now on Zoom calls.

I have witnessed, by many

people, a range of defensive moves and silence, compliancy, denial and an inability to have a conversation.

When racist behaviour is called out, there are a lot of excuses and ever so common, just silence. Many of these people are well-intentioned but their silence is upholding white supremacy.

So, what is that telling us? As poet and activist Amanda Gorman said, “It’s the past we step into and how we repair it.”

Being uncomfortable and unsure is a part of the process of doing daily anti-racism work. I am learning and unlearning everyday. I am calling on everyone to move past the uneasiness and please speak up. This is a journey for everyone to uncover our own implicit bias and work to end and dismantle systems of oppression and create an antiracist society.

Self reflection is painful but necessary in order to build an equitable and anti-racist community and country.

Sometimes, social justice work is isolating, lonely and extremely draining, but when you see that your activism turns into action, it is really rewarding.

Homes needed, not new city projects Dear Editor, Re: “Historic First Nations Bunkhouse in Steveston could be rebuilt,” Online, Jan. 23 Recent news reports suggest some elected representatives and senior city staff are unaware of the devastating financial and psychological impact COVID-19 is having on many Richmond residents.

Despite this, city officials continue to fund questionable projects, which will encumber taxpayers with growing annual financial liabilities.

I speak of the $19.44 million Phoenix net loft project, the $5.3 million lawn bowling clubhouse, unknown millions for the Lulu Island Park and the continuing financial debacle of our Olympic Oval.

Now, we have a new project proposal — rebuilding the First Nations bunkhouse in Steveston for

about $2.05 million. I wonder how Richmond’s homeless community feels about these expenditures?

I suggest the bunkhouse history be included in the Phoenix facility history with some salvaged artifacts.

Otherwise, restore the bunkhouse to its original purpose and provide housing for homeless persons.

While unknown numbers of Richmond businesses and individuals are struggling for financial survival, a majority of city council OK’d a 5.68 per cent tax hike for 2021 (Richmond News, Jan. 21).

Does anyone believe 16 new police officers will stop the shootings, drive-bys, arsons, etc. in Richmond, as justification for the tax increase?

We really are in the midst of a dangerous pandemic.

Metro Vancouver Transit Police are recommending a charge of assault against a 27-year-old Richmond man who was arrested after a woman was allegedly pushed to the ground at the Richmond-Brighouse Station.

The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Canada Line Station in central Richmond. Shannon Pang alleges she was walking down the stairs at Richmond-Brighouse station when a man walking the other way made eye contact with her and pushed her over as he passed by.

Pang also noted that the man was not wearing a mask, which is in violation of the TransLink mandatory mask policies.

The suspect was arrested but has been released from custody with multiple conditions, including not having contact with the victim and not going on Canada Line stations.

He is scheduled to appear in court on April 26.

Richmond RCMP are asking for home surveillance or dashcam video after gunshots were heard in Hamilton on Feb. 1.

Police said officers were called to the 22300-block of Chaldecott Drive around 12:30 a.m. on Monday after residents reported hearing multiple gunshots.

According to the Richmond RCMP, reports suggested gunfire was exchanged between occupants of two separate vehicles that were in the area.

The vehicles were seen leaving the scene at a “high rate of speed” when police arrived.

No injuries have been reported.

“The investigation is still in its

early stages, and investigators are back in the area today speaking with local residents,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson, spokesperson for the Richmond RCMP, adding police are asking witnesses to come forward.

“Residents in the area are also encouraged to check their home surveillance and vehicle dashcams to see if they may have captured the incident on video,” said Henderson.

Insp. Michael Cohee, officer-incharge of Investigative Services, said every resident in the Hamilton area has “every right to be concerned” given that the neighbourhood is typically quiet.

“Richmond RCMP is committed to promoting safety in our communities, and will continue to actively undertake public safety initiatives within the Hamilton area,” said

Police have not said if this is related to the recent gang shootings in the Lower Mainland.

Richmond had two fatal shootings in early January that were linked to an ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Mainland.

Since January, there have been a total of six gang-related shootings in the Lower Mainland — five of which have been fatal — and the addition of a recent drive-by shooting in a Langley neighbourhood.

Advice on the City of Richmond’s website confirms the humane trapping of squirrels is legal, for the purposes of relocating them within a 10-kilometre radius.

A Richmond resident is crying foul after discovering her neighbour is trapping squirrels on top of their shared fence.

CJ Miller got upset a few days ago when she heard the squirrels screaming after being trapped in the backyard of the detached homes on Sheridan Street, close to No. 2 and Williams roads.

Miller was so incensed she went out to investigate and, upon seeing the squirrels trapped in the wire cage, proceeded to set them free.

She has been knocking on her neighbour’s door to ask why they’d set the trap, but nobody has answered.

After contacting the RCMP, the City of Richmond and the Regional Animal Protection Society, Miller was

A housing advocacy group was unable to convince Richmond’s planning committee to increase zoning for more market rental units at a proposed development near Capstan Way. However, the committee voted to ban restrictions on rentals at the proposed Polygon development at Garden City and Cambie roads — although it will be up to city council to make a final decision on the issue next week.

Why has council been requiring market rental...if it’s the same as (renting) strata condos?

While the covenant would allow all condo owners to rent out their units if they wanted, Roston pointed out that in B.C., ownerdevelopers can file a rental disclosure statement to allow rentals in strata units for a specified period of time specified, for example, 100 years.

Currently, the city requires 10 per cent of units in new developments be designated for market rental.

Roston and the advocacy group, however, had wanted to see 65 per cent of the development zoned for market rental to help make Richmond more affordable.

“Why has council been requiring market rental housing in new developments if it’s the same as (renting) strata condos?”

What the city is doing, Roston added, is

“creating an army of amateur landlords.”

“From the point of view of the market rental landlord…they want the tenant to stay for as long as possible, because that minimizes their turnover costs,” he added.

Man hit with COVID fine

A man who allegedly refused to put on a mask and was “abusive” to airline staff at Vancouver International Airport has been fined under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act (CRMA), according to Richmond Mounties.

The incident took place on Jan. 20 in the airport’s domestic terminal, according to Richmond RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Ian Henderson.

The 32-year-old Ontario man, who was also allegedly intoxicated, was hit with two violation tickets under the CRMA, each totalling $230 – one was for not wearing a mask or face covering and the other, for abusive or belligerent behaviour.

“He was arrested for causing a disturbance and lodged in cells for a time to sober up,” said Henderson.

The man was also fined $115 for public intoxication under the BC Liquor Licencing Control Act. The total for the three fines is $575.

“There will be lots of people doing the New Year decorations, for example, Richmond-Steveston MLA Kelly Greene said she is going to decorate her doors. It’s like at the beginning of the pandemic, we put hearts in our windows to honour our health-care heroes,” said Reid.

The decorations could not only create bright and cheerful neighbourhoods in these dark months, but also show support and solidarity within Richmond’s community.

RCMP seek witnesses to fatal crash Kirsten Clarke

Richmond Mounties are asking for witnesses to a fatal collision to come forward.

The crash happened around 1:15 p.m.

on Sunday, Jan. 10, when a grey Toyota Tacoma pickup collided with a Ford Escape.

Police say the Toyota Tacoma was entering onto Bridgeport Road from Sea Island Way when it crashed with the Ford Escape, which had been travelling eastbound on Bridgeport Road.

The driver of the Ford Escape was taken to hospital but later succumbed to their injuries. Mounties have not released any further details about the victim.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma remained on scene, and was cooperative with police.

Richmond RCMP are now asking anyone

who witnessed the crash to come forward, and for drivers to review any dash-cam video.

Why should I worry about my blood pressure?

Blood pressure is a measure of how much force your heart is pumping blood throughout your body. There are two numbers for your blood pressure readings – systolic pressure (top number) measures the pressure in the arteries when heart contracts and diastolic pressure (bottom number) measures the pressure in the arteries when heart relaxes. In general, blood pressure reading of 120/80mmHg or less is considered within the normal range. Blood pressure can vary throughout the day based on body posture, activity level and emotions. High blood pressure is also known as the silent killer because it typically can have no symptoms until significant damage had been done to the blood vessels and organs.

Often patients are not aware that they have high blood pressure and are at risk for heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease and eye disease. Risk factors for developing hypertension include age, family history, excessive alcohol intake, sedentary lifestyle, obesity and high sodium diet. If you have diabetes, the risk for developing heart disease doubles if your blood pressure is not under controlled.

Performing a routine blood pressure check will allow you to identify if you have high blood pressure. While only a doctor can confirm the diagnosis, you can measure your blood pressure using a home device or a visit to the pharmacy. Talk to your pharmacist and doctor to learn more about hypertension.

Q: What is xerostomia?

A: Xerostomia is a medical description for dry mouth.

Causes for dry mouth can occur naturally from damage to the salivary glands, high stress situations and from prescription medications. Attention needs to be paid to this condition. When dry mouth occurs, acid levels in your mouth rise and can cause caries (cavities) in your teeth. High acid levels can also cause denture sores resulting from diminished tissue reparability. Diabetics are always at risk for this condition and should closely monitor their salivary flow.

Magic TV show in Steveston Nominate for the Arts Awards

A camera crew and staff were in Steveston Village to start shooting a new comedy series on Monday morning.

According to Steveston Merchants, the show being filmed is TruTV’s Big Trick Energy, which is supposedly an “unscripted illusionist stun series.”

The series follows best friends and magicians Chris Ramsay, Eric Leclerc, Wes Barker and Alex Boyer who performed various types of magic on each other and unsuspecting spectators in the area.

Richmond is looking to shine a spotlight on the city’s arts community, and is calling for nominations for the annual Richmond Arts Awards.

Cat-sitting livens pandemic mood

As a child, Patrick Zhao dreamed about having a dog, so what’s the post-secondary student doing with six cats?

It’s a question he’s asked himself.

And the fact all his classes have been moved online means he’s around to enjoy their antics — of which there are plenty.

Gradually, Zhao’s apartment transformed into what he calls “Catland” — because it’s one thing to drop off a cat, but another to pick it up.

After Cat Brother took up residency, someone dropped off a ragdoll cat named Yoomi and her two kittens. They were followed by a nine-month-old British shorthair named Mei Tuan, who was then followed by Tian Mao, the most recent resident and a look-alike to the cat from the American cartoon, Tom and Jerry.

More than 10,000 free meals could be donated to hungry kids in Richmond, thanks to a partnership struck with one of Canada’s leading fast food chains.

Mealshare — a Canadian organization founded in 2013 to combat child hunger — has teamed up with A&Ws across the country.

For every designated “Mealshare” item ordered at A&W, a dollar will be donated to Mealshare, which then passes the funds to a particular charity’s food program.

In terms of Richmond, Mealshare works with the local branch of the Boys & Girls Club of South Coast BC, with the goal to provide around 10,800 meals for hungry

The A&W program works via “Mealshare Mondays,” when customers can order a Cheddar Bacon Uncle Burger Combo and one meal (a dollar) will be provided to a youth in need through Mealshare.

Any day of the week, however, customers can do their own “Mealshare” by adding $1 to their order. “(The A&W partnership) will have huge impact for our organization and the charities we support,” Lauren Hennessy, Mealshare’s Vancouver community leader coach, told the Richmond News.

Lafarge Canada Inc.’s Richmond plant is one step closer to being the first cement plant in the world to have the technology to recycle carbon emissions from its cement production.

Some of the captured CO2 will be reused on site, for example, in water treatment and fire suppression. However, the goal is to be able to re-invest it into building materials, said Moser.

Lafarge announced that the second phase of its Project CO2MENT, the installation of the Svante CO2 capture unit, is now complete.

Recapture technology a ‘great help’

While the plant will only be capturing a small percentage of the CO2 it emits daily, the technology is a step in the right direction.

The unit uses carbon capture technology to trap the CO2 — produced during the cement production — and clean and filter it. This means the CO2 can be captured and, following the project’s next phase, re-used, according to Lafarge, creating the world’s first “full-cycle solution to capture and reuse CO2 from a cement plant.”

The pandemic has changed everything from how we greet each other to how we shop. So, not surprisingly, it has also changed what we need to do to get a job.

To provide some tips on how to negotiate the ever-changing work landscape, the Richmond News spoke with Chen Liu, Ph.D., director of the Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) program at Trinity Western University.

Liu said, with companies pivoting to online, virtual meetings are becoming the “new normal,” which means people looking for work need to equip themselves with the relevant digital and communication skills.

“If you plan to go for job interviews, you need to learn how to present yourself in front of the camera and how to interact

with your colleagues and customers remotely,” said Liu. Job seekers also need to remember that the only constant in the workplace is change, especially in a post-coronavirus world, said Liu. So, while the current job market might seem bleak, this is the perfect time to take courses to improve yourselves so you’re ready to go when the situation changes.

Meanwhile, Liu recommends people, employed or not, work on their soft skills, such as being more disciplined and thoughtful regarding their employers and colleagues.

CORRIGAN, Robert Owen Born January 8, 1933 in Fernie, BC, passed away peacefully in New Westminster, BC, at the age of 88 on January 24, 2021. Bob was predeceased by his wife Florence, his parents Robert and Melba and his brother Bill. He is survived by his brother Boyd (Josee), daughters; Jane (Ray), Karen (Gerry), Maureen (Derek), his grandchildren; Heather (Mike), Cory (Isabella), Alan (Victoria), Shelly, Kimberly and his great-grandchildren; Lucas, Lily and Lucille.

Bob earned his Degree in Education from the University of BC, and spent many years working for the Richmond School Board, first as a teacher and then as an administrator, where he created positive learning environments for students and staff. Bob was well known for his love of theatre and music and shared this with many students throughout the years, staging many plays where children were exposed to acting, musical theatre and stagecraft. In retirement, Bob continued to pursue his love of music joining two choirs, the Langley First Capital Chorus Barbershop Choir and The Handel Society of Music.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honour Bob, once Covid restrictions have been relaxed.

An announcement will be made at that time. No flowers by request.

Well, for what’s new in pizza, Round Table Pizza, located across from Liquor Town at Blundell Centre, has added three Sou uth Asian-style selections to its already extensive menu.

Jack Chahal, owner of the restaurant since it opened in the mall in 2012, says the trio of shahi paneer, butter chicken and tandoori chicken pizzas offer a special alternative when you’re feeling adventurous and want a pizza with a difference.

“Those are all Indian-inspired pizzas and have proven to be very popular,” says Chahal, adding he tapped into his own ethnic tradition to provide the authentic recipe for the pizzas.

The Shahi pizza features butter sauce, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes and shahi paneer - a special Indian cheese.

“It’s full of wonderful flavours, and a good option for those who are vegetarians,” Chahal says.

For another authentic South Asian taste, the butter chicken pizza combines onions, green peppers, tomatoes, tomato sauce, and marinated butter chicken.

“E Every yone knows butter ch hicken for itts speciall taste. We just decided to put itt on a pizza, which has beco ome a hit wiith custome ers,” Chahal says.

“They are a great compliment to our popular, regular pizzas, including the everything, which is just like it sounds with salami, pepperoni, ham, beef, Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, pineapple, tomatoes and cheese,” Chahal says.

Other classic favourites include the Hawaiian special with ham, cheese and pineapple, and the meat lovers with pepperoni, salami, ham, Italian sausage, beef and cheese.

And with a variety crusts to choose from - regular, thin, low-carb cauliflower, plus two types of gluten-free options - you can strike the combination that’s tailored specifically for you.

Pizza isn’t the whole story at Round Table Pizza.

The menu also includes baked lasagna and spaghetti, both with meat sauce and a side of garlic bread.

Plus, you can add some chicken wings to your meal with breaded hot wings, honey garlic, barbecue, buffalo, and salt and pepper to choose from.
