Voting Day — don’t blow it off Eve Edmonds
EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
As I sat down to write this column I interrupted myself (blame it on my ADD) to remind my son, yet again, to vote this Saturday in Richmond’s byelection. His response was a shrug and, “we’ll see,” which led me to harangu him about how he should vote. His response was, “What’s one thing I would notice or would change if I voted?” And there we have it — the very reason why, right now, we’re sitting at 3.4 per cent of registered voters having cast a ballot in early voting, why a full-on civic election for mayor and council, as well as school trustees, is lucky to break 30 per cent, why this byelection, where we’re voting for a single city councillor, may get half that. So, here’s my answer. Remember, I’m talking to a 23-year-old (who’s long since left the room), so let’s start

with basketball courts and soccer pitches. How many soccer pitches there are, who can use the basketball courts, where the bike lanes go, how much gym memberships, all this is determined by the city. Granted, the unelected bureaucracy work out the details, but the big picture of the kind of city we want to live in comes from council. Moreover, that big picture emerges out of lots of little bylaws and regulations. Think of it like a detailed paint-by-number. Not many, apart from our intrepid city hall reporter, are going to sit through a council meeting in which hours are spent discussing zoning, for example. But, when it comes time to buying a condo, renting a home, deciding where to go for dinner or what day care to put your kid in, it matters. Those bylaws add up, particularly in this election where it seems the balance of power between left and right leaning candidates is up for grabs.
Housing, for example, is a provincial jurisdiction, but the city can set rules for housing developers that can determine who and how people are housed. How? - Councillors can determine if a condo complex has one floor of social housing, five floors of social housing or no floors of social housing. (More social housing is good if you need it, but not if you want more options to buy.) - Councillors can set regulations that would ensure all new stratas allow an unlimited number of units to be rented. (Good news if you’re a renter, not if you don’t want to live with renters.) - Councillors can require some developments be rental-only or have a portion of units rental-only and the size of that portion. (A combination of the above.) Point being, these apparently small decisions can have a huge impact on people’s lives, where they live or how they invest. And if housing isn’t an issue for you right now, what about greenspace, is there
enough of it? What about your business, do you feel supported? What do you think of all those patios popping up, do you like them? What about services for seniors, are there enough? City council has a say in all of the above. Granted, we’re not going to wake up to a whole new reality after Saturday’s byelection — but don’t underestimate it, either. To my son, and whoever else is looking for a reason to bother, you will notice not just one thing but a myriad of things — over time and if you look. This is the last paper before the election. As such, we have a policy not to print election material that may be seen as “political” (although I’d argued everything is political, including whether or not you vote.) And while we don’t have election stories in this paper, all we’ve written throughout the campaign is on our website. Results are expected Saturday night after polls close at 8 p.m. so tune into RichmondNews.com for coverage.

There are good Trickle-down effect ain’t working people out there Dear Editor,
Dear Editor, On Monday, April 26 while walking north in the laneway from Moncton Street to Chatham, I tripped over a curb, happily landing on some grass. However, I could not get up! A kind motorist stopped and got out of his vehicle to lift me up. He was wearing a dark mask and left as soon as he saw that I was uninjured. How wonderful that in this day and age a man in a dark mask is a hero. Valour is alive and well in Steveston.

trickle-down economics.
For decades, Canadians have been force-fed the same economic lie — that supply-side economics, more commonly referred to as trickle-down economics, would eventually bring wealth and prosperity to the average Canadian citizen.
This “cup runneth over” theory of economic growth rests on the notion that, once the big business owners and mega corporations start to experience unprecedented returns on their investments, like a cup that is filled to the brim, the economic benefits will spill over to the masses and create a never-ending fountain of economic prosperity for working Canadians. Unfortunately, 40 years later, most Canadians are still waiting for this fountain of economic life to overflow. Instead, they have found that little spillage actually occurs since the wealthy compensate by simply obtaining a larger bucket to replace their modest cup. The evidence clearly shows the repercussions of

First, let’s explore the unfair wealth distribution in Canada. The wealth owned by the bottom 40 per cent of Canadians is a mere 1.2 per cent of total wealth in this nation.
In 2020, CEOs made about 202 times more than their average worker’s salary. Stocks owned by the elite are estimated at 83 per cent of the total stocks. Next, let’s look at who has gained the most from the pandemic. Netflix increased its profit during the pandemic by 27 per cent but paid zero in federal taxes. Amazon saw a 40 per cent revenue increase in 2020. On the other side of the economic spectrum, about 1.8 million of the poorest Canadians lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Canada’s income gap is reported to be at an all-time high. A new survey published this month revealed that 53 per cent of respondents are $200 or less away from insolvency. Finally, let’s analyze the benefits
of implementing new, fairer tax policies. In 1980, the top earners paid about 43 per cent of their income, but now they pay just 33. By implementing a measly one per cent wealth tax on $20 million or more in wealth, an estimated $10 billion could be generated in tax revenue. Placing a digital sales tax on companies like Netflix or Amazon could generate about $3.4 billion over five years. Cracking down on offshore tax evasion schemes and ending foreign tax havens could result in an additional $10-15 billion in tax revenue. Ending tax breaks on shareholders’ dividends would generate roughly $5.34 billion per year. There is an insistence that, despite 40 years of evidence to the contrary, trickle-down economics will still work if we are just patient. But, as the adage goes, fool me once, shame on you, fool me since 1980, shame on me.

LETTERS MP Chiu right to be scared Dear Editor, Re: “Criminal refugee numbers ‘scare’ MP,” News, May 4. Richmond–Steveston MP Kenny Chiu’s concerns about the criminal refugee numbers in Canada are valid and timely. Canada has one of the most welcoming, open and inclusive immigration policies in the world. Unfortunately, these policies are being misused and abused by a number of shady characters. Canada needs to tighten its rules of entry into Canada and strengthen enforce-
ment to remove those deemed inadmissible. It is very encouraging to note that Kenny Chiu, along with his colleagues in Canadian Parliament, will be bringing these concerns to the attention of his fellow law makers. Certainly, we should welcome law-abiding immigrants who are willing to contribute to the growth and development of this country. At the same time, we must discourage and prevent those bent on abusing our system.

Byelection a waste of tax dollars Dear Editor,
Re: “Richmond considers all-inclusive playground which could cost nearly $2M,” News, May 22 In reading the current issue of the Richmond News, I was pleased to see the possibility of an accessible playground becoming a new Richmond amenity. The $2 million price tag seems very reasonable considering the benefits accruing to the project.

$700,000 cost, fully one third of the cost of the playground. With B.C. cities now providing four-year terms to their elected officials, the possibility of ambitious politicians abandoning the civic level for the “big time” is always with us.
Once the basics such as fire, police, garbage and roads are addressed, civic government should focus on providing resources for the least advantaged among us.
Rather than accept the ridiculous expense of a byelection, we should accept the order in which candidates were ranked in the previous election. In this instance the ninthranked candidate would be invited to fill the vacancy. Should the candidate demur, the next would be invited until one accepts the invitation.
Contrast this expenditure with the byelection’s

Gunman shouldn’t have gotten away Dear Editor, Re: “YVR shooting kills one man,” News, May 9. Is it just me or is anyone else concerned about the fact the Richmond RCMP allowed gunmen to get away from what is the most highly policed part of the entire Greater Vancouver area, YVR? One road in, one road out — police all around the perimeter. Even if the gunmen got away from the terminal as far as Garden City and Sea Island Way, it’s easily possible to pursue their vehicle from a safe distance as opposed to stopping and just letting it drive away! Following the vehicle not only ensures you know the direction it’s taking so other
police cars can be alerted, but it also gives the copper chopper time to get on the job. The fact these gunmen got clean away, and are still at large, doesn’t jive with the claim the RCMP ceased the pursuit out of concerns for public safety. The police spokesmen have been doing a good job of telling the public about how hard they’re going to come down on these gangsters, but I’d be a lot more reassured if they made a serious effort to catch them while they had what looks to me like a foolproof opportunity to get the job done right after the shooting took place.

The captain of a Steveston fishing boat is facing possible impaired operation charges after his vessel ran aground on rocks at Garry Point Park. Richmond RCMP said it received a call at 1:30 p.m. on May 17 of a vessel operating “erratically” in Steveston Harbour. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the 55-foot fishing vessel had run aground on some rocks near Garry Point Park.
As a result, the captain was taken into custody, while the Coast Guard stayed with the vessel until it could be safely floated at high tide later that day. This vessel’s captain may have been drunk when running aground.
The RCMP then deployed its own vessel to help the Coast Guard rescue the crew. According to police, the pair was uninjured. However, evidence at the scene indicated
The captain, a 48-yearold Surrey man, was later released from custody but, say police, faces possible charges of operating a vessel while impaired.
“We are at the start of...a very busy boating season. Whether you operate a commercial vessel, a luxury yacht or a jet ski, you are responsible for the safety of all those onboard and for others around you, in or on the water,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson of Richmond RCMP.
A food truck, whose Richmond business licence was under threat of being cancelled, will be moving to Terra Nova Park. Richmond city council was deliberating last week whether to pull the business licence of Vancouver-based Shameless Buns, which was operating at the Steveston Hub off Moncton Street. The city claimed they were contravening a bylaw by operating in a parking lot while the food truck operators said they’d legally obtained their business licence. Instead of cancelling the licence, council unanimously voted to have city staff work with the food truck operators, Corvette Romero and Matt Brennan, to find another location. The matter was supposed to come
back to Richmond council on Tuesday (May 25) to look at the business licence issue again, but, in the meantime, the food truck has come to an agreement with the city’s economic development office to operate at the new location.
Shameless Buns and Salty’s Lobster Shack, operating in Steveston, were both asked to move after the city received complaints about their locations. Salty’s decided to move to the Britannia Historical Shipyards area, whereas the Shameless Buns operators felt that location was too quiet, calling it a “ghost town.” If the Shameless Buns business licence had been cancelled, it would have affected their operations in Steveston as well as in a light industrial/business area off Knight Street. Shameless Buns, which sells Filipino cuisine, will start operating at Terra Nova Park this Saturday.

Walliser said things seem to be going from bad to worse in the village, since she moved the business there 10 years ago from Vancouver — to get away from the frequent thefts.
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A Steveston store owner is reeling after being robbed twice in the space of a few weeks.
“The guy (six weeks ago) came in; he wanted to look at these bags, he knew the high-end ones. He was taking videos of them, talking to someone on the phone. I thought ‘this was weird,’” recalled Walliser.
Glenda Walliser can’t believe her bad luck after her high-end consignment store on Moncton Street was broken into by a thief around 5:20 a.m. on Saturday. After responding to the alarm, she then watched the CCTV footage in utter disgust as the culprit ripped through Bon Retour Consignment Fashion, grabbing as many of the expensive items as possible. Only last month, Walliser had confronted another thief, who tried to steal two designer handbags from under her nose. She told the Richmond News on Tuesday how she fought with the man that time, only for him to run off with the stolen bags, before he dropped them when a passerby managed to force him up
The thief was captured on CCTV early Saturday at Bon Retour Consignment Fashion on Moncton Street. against a wall. “It was bright outside. And he doesn’t flinch when the alarm goes off,” Walliser said of the CCTV footage. “People (on social media) are saying it looks like a woman, but I have no idea. “I believe he had cased the place and knew what he was coming for. He took all the high-end stuff and left the cheaper
“He wanted to see them side by side on the counter. He grabbed them and started to run out the door. I fought with him, which was stupid, but it was a reaction. He pushed me, I ran after him, I shouted ‘he’s stealing from me’. This guy grabbed him, had him up against the wall. He dropped the bags and ran away. “I locked the store and didn’t open again that day. I didn’t go back for about four days. It’s not the same person as the break-in, though. “I used to be in Vancouver, on Cambie,
then Broadway, then Marpole. I had so many break-ins in Vancouver, so I had enough of it and I always wanted to be in Steveston.” Walliser said she some people commented on Facebook that their properties in Steveston had been broken into by someone of a similar description the same morning. However, Richmond RCMP said it has not received any such reports, other than the break-in at Walliser’s store on Moncton Street. Police say they arrived at the scene around 5:30 a.m. to find the front door appearing to be pried open, but there was no one inside. The $84 million facility, which partially opened almost two years late, is the subject of several lawsuits between the city and the contractor, Stuart Olson. When the Richmond News filed a freedom-of-information request in February 2019 for documents asking about the delays, the city sent two memos that had been sent to council,
an already published press release and briefing notes for the public and media — out of a total of 3,865 pages of records.
When a challenge to the city didn’t produce any new results, the News proceeded to move forward with an inquiry, which will be done by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner. The city cited five sections of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act when refusing to disclose documents to the News. These were policy advice and recommendations, legal advice, disclosure harmful to the financial or economic interests of a public body, for example, trade secrets or negotiations, disclosure harmful to business interests of a third party and disclosure harmful to personal
privacy.
The adjudicator in the inquiry will decide whether more documents should have been released. The city has been given a deadline of June 16 for its submissions, and the News has to respond by July 8. The city has retained the law firm Young Anderson to deal with the inquiry. The seniors centre and events centre at the MCAL opened in March 2019, but the discovery of a cracked lap pool the month prior was cited as causing a further delay in opening the aquatic centre. In fact, lawsuit documents showed that a second lap pool had problems with the waterproofing membrane, which caused leaking in the crawl space below.

Drive-thru racist suspect will not be charged
Charges won’t be laid against a man accused of going on a racist rant at a Richmond drive-thru earlier this month. The suspect, who was not named by police, was tracked down after Richmond RCMP issued a public appeal. Cpl. Ian Henderson, of Richmond RCMP, told the Richmond News that no criminal charges are being recommended. Instead, the matter was settled via an “alternative measure,” agreed upon by both parties. The incident occurred May 1, when the suspect, who was reportedly standing near the Burger King drive-thru window next to Ironwood Plaza, approached an Asian family in an SUV and began yelling at them. When a bystander tried to intervene and tell the suspect to leave, the suspect then began hurling anti-Asian slurs at him. Video of the incident was posted to social media. “Hate incident investigations can be very complex, and video evidence, although often very compelling, does not always speak to the totality of the situation,” said Henderson in an emailed statement.
“...Ultimately, by collaborating with both the victim and the suspect, they were able to arrive at an alternative to criminal charges that, hopefully, will prevent this situation from reoccurring.” —Kirsten Clarke/Richmond News
Man yells slurs at rally Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A video has surfaced online that shows a man hurling racial slurs at a Stop Asian Hate rally in Richmond on Sunday. Richmond RCMP confirmed that the incident was reported to the police and an investigation is still ongoing. The man involved in Sunday’s incident appears to be the same person who vented at another group of Asians in Vancouver last year. The man later wrote an apology letter to the Richmond News saying he was sorry for what he did. On Sunday, members from the local Chinese-speaking community showed up at Richmond-Brighouse Station to hold a rally to raise awareness of the rise of anti-Asian hate and promote cross-cultural dialogues to combat racism.
H o w e v e r, near the end of the event, a few attendees were approached by the man who started hurling racial slurs at them. The man on the As the con- right was caught f r o n t a t i o n on video shouting went on, Pat- at rally volunteers. rick Lui, one of the volunteers at the rally, started recording the interaction via his phone. In the video, the man could be heard saying “If you want to still live like you are in China, stay in China. Eat your Chinese food...I am angry at the Chinese culture” and “you’re no different than any other culture, you’re not special and you give that impression.” Another attendee, Ally Wang, said she was shocked at the time.
“It’s more painful to actually experience racism on your own than reading news about people being attacked by racist rants or incidents,” said Wang, adding that this was her first time facing racism after immigrating to Canada 10 years ago. “The only passport I hold is the Canadian passport. We are all Canadians and nobody should have the right to tell me where I should go.” A young man and his friend later stepped in and tried to help group members out, according to Wang. City councillor Chak Au said it was “absurd” to see a racist incident taking place at a Stop Asian Hate rally, but he also saw the bright side of it. “It’s so beautiful to see the young man stepping in to help and his behaviour gives us hope and encourages us all to work together to make this place much better,” said Au.

Fishing community legend passes away, age 83 Alan Campbell
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
He once saved a seal being shot by fishermen, then named it “Josephine,” and let it live in his bathtub and travel in his truck. There’s little doubt about the depth of Stevestonite Joe Bauer’s connection to the sea, be it the Fraser River or the open ocean. Tributes have been pouring in after the sad passing two weeks ago of Bauer, 83, a much-loved fisherman, teacher, environmentalist and social justice advocate, who was also a long-time adjunct professor with UBC’s Institute for the Oceans, Fisheries. Closer to home, Bauer was best known as the man who, through the Steveston Historical Society, saved the Gulf of Georgia Cannery in the ‘70s before helping the formation of the cannery’s non-profit society. His legacy can also be seen at Garry Point Park, where he was behind the design of the Fisherman’s Needle monument. Bauer’s friend of 60 years, Bud Sakamoto, also a well-respected former fisherman
and community advocate, held his hand at his home a few hours before his passing.

“I saw him early afternoon. I didn’t think he was going to go that day,” an emotional Sakamoto told the Richmond News.
“He touched many lives in positive ways and his legacy will live on through his teachings and philosophies. Our condolences to his family and friends.”
Joe Bauer, with his Queen’s medal for services to the community.
“I woke him up. He acknowledged I was there. That’s the last time I saw him. “Old age was catching up to him. He was a very honest person. He was very generous with his knowledge; some fishermen don’t want to talk about the industry and how they caught the fish, etc. Joe was more than happy to talk to anyone about it.” Sakamoto recalled how the pair first met back in the ‘50s, when they used to fish the river as young as age seven, with their respective fathers, before progressing to running their own boats as teenagers. “We worked together for decades in the industry; we went up and down the river and up the coast,” said Sakamoto. “We went all the way up to the north tip of Vancouver Island, fishing for sockeye.” Sakamoto said Bauer, who never married nor had children, is survived by a sister, niece and nephew in Atlanta.
Mayor Malcolm Brodie spoke of Bauer’s passion being “instrumental in rejuvenating and preserving” the cannery. “Joe always spoke in very moving terms when he attended the annual tribute (at the

Council wants answers on hospital premier and the ministers of finance and health for Treasury Board approval of the plan.

Richmond city council wants to know when the Richmond Hospital rebuild project is moving forward. A motion from Couns. Alexa Loo and Linda McPhail was unanimously supported by council on Tuesday to ask the
They also want a meeting with Richmond MLAs to discuss the funding and the timeline. McPhail told the Richmond News she was expecting an announcement in the April budget, but at that point the province said the business case was still “under review.”
Vaccines are safe and effective.
When there was no announcement in the provincial budget, followed shortly by the Richmond Hospital Foundation announcement about reaching its $50 million fundraising goal, McPhail said she felt it was time to write to the provincial government. “Those two things kind of aligned, not hearing about it in the budget and hearing that our community has raised $50 million towards this project, I thought we really got to say something as a council,” said McPhail. Last July, Premier John Horgan came to Richmond Hospital and said the plan was expanding from what was originally announced, adding several hundred million dollars to the project. At that point, the government said the plan would be in the September budget. An election was called, however, and the budget didn’t get tabled until April, and it didn’t include any details about the costing or timing of the hospital rebuild.

McPhail said she receives a lot of inquiries from the public about when construction is starting, and they would feel “a bit more comfortable” if they had more information.

“I know these things take time… but our community has done so much work, and I think they just want to know that, yes, it’s in place, they’re going to start procurement, so then there’s something to look forward to,” McPhail said. The Richmond Hospital Foundation urged city council in a recent letter to “raise your voice on behalf of the people of Richmond” to get concrete answers on the project. “This 1966 facility is long overdue to be replaced,” Natalie Meixner, president and CEO of the hospital foundation, told the Richmond News. She, too, was expecting an announcement in the April budget. While Meixner said she “applauds” the government for moving forward and adding elements like new emergency and medical imaging departments as well as expanded pediatric and mental health services; however, she said she regularly gets calls from donors asking when the project is moving Search Richmond Hospital for forward. full story at Richmond-News.com

Hope of opening up after COVID Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A five-person indoor party or 10-person outdoor one — or an outdoor wedding with 50 people. These are just a few of things Richmondites can do now that the province initiated “Step 1” of lifting COVID-19 restrictions. COVID-19 cases have been falling in Richmond and across the province. Weekly Richmond numbers dropped last week to 99, according to data released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), from a weekly high of 272 in early April. Just a few months ago, daily provincial cases were above 1,000, but this week, that number has dropped to about 300 per day. Effective immediately, bars and restaurants are able to have people eating and
drinking indoors — with six people per party — and churches, mosques, synagogues, temples and gurdwaras can open their doors to worshippers once again.
Indoor and outdoor personal gatherings will be permitted and organized events will see expanded capacity.
But non-essential travel between health zones remains restricted until at least June 15, and other province-wide COVID-19 protocols — such as masks and physical distancing measures — remain in place.
For Tourism Richmond, the provincial announcement Tuesday was what they had been waiting for.
Travel restrictions will continue to be enforced, according to the province. The second step, expected no sooner than June 15, will expand seated indoor gatherings to 50 people from 10, effectively easing restrictions on movie theatres, banquet halls and arts venues. In this second step, up to 50 spectators will be permitted at outdoor sporting events, and travel restrictions within B.C. will be lifted. When seven in 10 British Columbians are vaccinated, B.C. will lift its provincial state of emergency and public health emergency.
Tourism ready to bounce back
“This plan will allow our industry to move forward in a thoughtful, predictable manner, and businesses are able to plan for the summer and for the rest of the year,” said Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond. Small said Tourism Richmond is already marketing again, but that will mirror what restrictions are in place. “We will continue to promote Richmond’s diverse experiences in our region and then to the province and to specific pockets in the country, as our industry will restart for the first time in many months,” she said. Small added vaccinations are “one of the keys to this plan,” and she encouraged everyone to get registered for their shots.
Outbreak at Richmond Hospital
Seven patients tested positive for COVID-19 at Richmond Hospital last week, prompting Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) to declare an outbreak. The outbreak is in the 4 North Acute Care for the Elderly unit and it’s now closed to new admissions, transfers and non-essential visits. VCH, however, emphasized the hospital remains open and urged anyone needing medical care not to delay seeking it. School exposures COVID-19 exposures have been detected at Anderson elementary (May 18 and 20) and at Pythagoras Academy (May 17), according to VCH. Exposures occur when someone with COVID-19 was in the school during their infectious period. Earlier this month, Health Canada authorized the Pfizer vaccine for kids between 12 and 15 years old. — with files from News staff, Glacier Media

Studying Dementia – news and more news
Introduction The statistics relating to “Dementia” are well known. Current numbers in Canada are relatively high (about 750,000 Canadians suffer with Dementia and roughly 25,000 are diagnosed annually with it) and are forecasted to rise in the coming years. What is also fairly well known is that there are different types of Dementia. Some Canadians suffer with more quickly advancing forms of Dementia. Others live with Dementia many years, and may pass away from something different (such as Cancer or Cardiac disease). The cost of care of Dementia patients in Canada is estimated to be $12 billion annually. That excludes the cost of drugs. Understandably, therefore, there are abundant studies, across the world, into various aspects of the Disease and it is worth reviewing some of them. I hope readers find this of some use. Sleep It appears that in middle age, sleep is more important than previously understood. In the Scientific Journal Nature Communications, a study published in April found that a person sleeping less than 6 hours per night significantly increases their risk of contracting Dementia. The study went over 25 years, with about 8,000 participants. At age 50, 60 and 70, persons averaging less than 6 hours of sleep had a 30% higher risk of contracting Dementia (independent of demographic, behavior and mental health factors). Severine Sabia, the lead author of the study, told the Wall Street Journal:
Experts who analyzed the study, noted that it was done over a long period of time. Also, perhaps because a fairly large number of people participated in the study, reliability of the findings is high.

Cars (yes!) Advanced technology allows our vehicles to tell us when we are not driving properly. A group of American researchers believe that changes in driving behavior may be an early sign of Dementia. Their project, known as The Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongRoad), examined 2,990 drivers between the ages of 65 and 79, in 5 cities in the United States. Each vehicle was fitted with a data collection device that recorded detailed driving information. Over a period of 3 years, researchers followed up with drivers at the one year and 3 year marks.. An in person assessment was done at the two year mark. Researchers also reviewed each participant’s state driving record and their medical records were reviewed annually. Demographic factors such as age, sex and education were considered. Over the study period, 31 drivers were diagnosed with Dementia and another 33 with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). When examining demographic factors and driving behavior, the research data proved 88% accurate. Though age was the most important Dementia predictor, other factors included race, percentage of trips made within 15 minutes of home, minutes per trip and the number of hard braking events. The study was published in the medical journal Geriatrics. If it gets validated, the algorithms developed could become a tool for early detection (and management) of Dementia and MCI. In Canada, 3.25 million people over age 65 have drivers licenses. Lifestyle over genetics? At the recent (2021) American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Conference, research presented shows that healthy lifestyle behaviors can lower dementia risk among persons who are higher risk due to family history of dementia. Having a parent or sibling with the disease increases a person’s risk of contracting dementia by 75%. The research team, lead by Angelique Brellenthin, Ph.D., analyzed data on 302,239 men and women aged 50-73, who completed a physical exam between 2006-2010 (as part of the United Kingdom Biobank study). All the adults were free of Dementia when the study began. They provided background information about their families and their lifestyles. Researchers then followed the participants for eight years, to see who developed dementia. The adults at highest risk of developing dementia were those with family histories of the disease. However, following the lifestyle behaviors cut by half the risk of developing Dementia. Even following only some of the behaviors cut the risk. Researchers suggested that for those people with family histories of Dementia, a proactive approach to lifestyle did reduce the probability of contracting the disease and the more lifestyle behaviors that were followed (including diet, sleeping, not smoking and keeping weight under control), the lower the probability of contracting the disease, despite the family history. So the right behaviors do affect brain health. Radiation A recent article in the National Post referred to a Toronto pilot study (published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease) that concluded that low doses of radiation “vastly improved” behavior and cognitive abilities of Alzheimer’s patients. The study involved only 4 patients. All were suffering from severe Alzheimer’s Disease. They received 3 instalments of low dose radiation at two week intervals. Their behavior was monitored before and after the treatments. Background information was collected from family, friends and caregivers. Three of the patients showed significant improvement within days of their first doses. The daughter of one of the patients visited shortly after one of the doses. She reported: “I had an amazing visit with my Dad this evening. I’m speechless. He was excited to see me. He spoke to me right away and gave me multiple kisses. My Mom agreed it’s been years since he has done this. Everyone is amazed”. The study, though, to be reliable, will need to be done across larger clinical trials. Conclusions Because nobody knows with certainty whether they will contract this awful disease, keeping informed is useful. In addition, particularly for Baby Boomers, a discussion with a Doctor regarding behaviors and family history would be prudent.

Palmer secondary student and flautist Nina Wang was honoured with gold medal at MusicFest Canada this week. She was joined at the virtual festival by fellow band students with the RC Palmer Concert Band, as well as McRoberts secondary students. Normally, band students would travel to the prestigious competition in Toronto, but like everything else this year, their participation has been virtual, cutting out the quintessential school trip experience. Palmer band teacher Iris Chan set up phones in different corners of the band room and filmed the Palmer concert band for the competition.

Chan was impressed by how her students performed given the COVID-19 limitations placed on them. “The professionalism it brought together, the teamwork, the coordination — they took it really seriously,” Chan said. Chan chalked up the high school’s success in music to a strong elementary program whereby most Grade 6 and 7 students in Richmond take band.
Music also trains the mind to think deeper, she added, and this is why she thinks music classes are more than just an elective. “It’s training for more than just fun or making sounds or making music, it’s the development of the overall human being,” she
Printmaking Dancers go taught online to provincials
A Richmond artist is hosting virtual art workshops to teach participants to get creative while exploring their neighbourhood.
Richmond’s artist-in-resident Rachel Rozanski is partnering with the Richmond Public Library to host workshops titled “Printing with Ocean Life,” which will teach everyone how to “print” art using items found in nature. The workshop is based around a Japanese art form called Gyotaku, or Japanese printmaking, which was traditionally used to print fish. Rozanski is aiming to have participants explore their surroundings, discover their local ecology and to learn to use materials found in nature. In the workshop, participants will be asked to collect stones, leaves, seaweed, flowers and other things to create art. The workshops take place from 11 to 12:30 p.m. on May 29 and June 12 and registration is required. For more information, search “Japanese printmaking” at Richmond-News.com. — Valerie Leung/Richmond News
A Richmond dance academy will be going mob-handed to the BC Performing Arts Provincials next month. Eleven students from the Richmond Academy of Dance, on River Road, are limbering up for the virtual competition, which runs June 1 to 5. The academy’s artistic director, Heather Joosten, said they are all “very excited” about the prospect of representing Richmond in the provincials, adding it’s “unique” the students are showcasing so many different areas of the arts. “We are…so proud of our students, especially as there is no other dance studio in the Lower Mainland that has such diversity in their representations at the BC Performing Arts

Meanwhile, two McRoberts band students, trumpeter Zephyr Clarke and drummer Thomas Vigneras, will play at MusicFest Canada as part of the Conn Selmer Centrestage Jazz Band, one of the most elite events, explained that school’s band teacher Jamie Carter. Both Clarke and Vigneras have also been accepted to the McGill jazz program. “The kids are being really, really resilient — auditioning during a pandemic,” he said. Clarke and Vigneras will be joining a “crew” of Richmond School District grads studying at the McGill jazz program. “We’re getting quite a foothold in the school there,” Carter said. The Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club is calling on the community to support its shredding fundraiser next week.
Arjan Singh Bhullar held a meet and greet with fellow community members outside Gurdwara Nanak Niwas, Richmond’s Indian Cultural Centre on No. 5 Road, on Saturday, May 22. Many families with children came out to see Bhullar, which included the Richmond RCMP and Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie.
Kajaks hosting vital fundraiser
Richmond’s new MMA world champion Arjan Bhullar meets a family of fans during his meet and greet on Saturday at the Sikh temple.
“Arjan Singh (Bhullar’s) meet and greet was a great opportunity to meet a local hero (and) someone that has reached the pinnacle of MMA,” said Jasveer Singh with the Sikh Press Association.
Singh added that having the event at the Gurdwara Nanak Niwas symbolized that Bhullar’s “Sikh faith and supportive community” contributed to his success.
Bhullar’s world title win became public knowledge last week, about two weeks after he had actually lifted the ONE Heavyweight World Championship belt.
“It was also a chance for Arjan to thank his supporters, both in person and by handing out autographed pictures.”
Richmond RCMP was present at the event to make sure COVID-19 protocols were followed.
He had signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) to keep his win in Singapore a secret.
For the second year in a row, the pandemic has forced the cancellation of the club’s two major fundraisers, the Kajaks Concession at the Richmond Elementary School Zone Meets and the BC Elementary School Track & Field Championship Meet. In that respect, the non-profit club said the knock-on effects of the cancellations “has been significant” and it’s operating on a “very tight budget.” It is hoping the community will come out in force to support its secure, on-site shredding event, courtesy of Shredwise, on Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McMath secondary. There is a minimum donation of $20.

BAUER, Josef George Joe passed away peacefully May 10th, 2021 at Rosewood Manor. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth (Penka), nephew Adrian (Amy), niece Nicole of Atlanta Georgia, grand nephews Aiden and Finn, and by a special neighbourhood friend, Ted Talmey. For over 75 years Joe considered Steveston home, where he was born and lived to established himself in the local and fishing communities. Joe was a true biologist and lived a life in the interconnected world of all living species. Fishing allowed him to explore the intertidal zone of the BC Coast and to become knowledgable of the fish and fauna. He shared his knowledge and expertise to become a lifetime member of the Vancouver Public Aquarium and as well become an Adjunct Professor at the Oceans and Fisheries Centre at UBC.
He will always be remembered for his love of all creatures big and small, his stories of his adventures, his good nature and his kindness. Special thanks to the caregivers at Rosewood Manor and the kind neighbours on Broadway St.

PETERS, Lyn (née Darrach) May 15, 2021 Lyn (Marilyn) Peters died at home with her husband, Terry at her side. Lyn is survived by their son, Luke (Jen); sister, Diane; and brother, Don (Gail). Lyn had a rewarding career working for the Fisheries Research Board, the University of BC, and Labour Canada, followed by 15 years of retirement. Leisure activities included reading, card playing, crossword puzzles, boating, world travels, and the family cabin. She was a fan of the 60’s folk music and played the tunes on her banjo and guitar. Their themes of love and peace influenced her volunteering for many Richmond programs. In later years she devoted herself to Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop and the Auxiliary Board. There are no plans for a service due to COVID and at her request. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary Lyn Peters Memorial Fund (www.rhhaux.ca and click "Donate Here") or a charity of your choice.
