‘Hospital of the future’ will need flow So, what exactly does “hospital of the future” mean? Something from The Jetsons? (Nothing like dating myself.)
Eve Edmonds
EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
I moved here 20 years ago, and even then there was talk of the Richmond Hospital needing to be rebuilt. Reports of the facility’s fragility in the case of even a minor seismic event were already circulating. In other words, Tuesday’s announcement that the provincial government is launching a massive renovation of the facility was a long time in coming. As Premier John Horgan said, the hospital was “already a couple of decades past its best before date.” Rebuilding and upgrading hospitals has been a thing for this government. They’ve announced a number of major projects like this around the province recently. However, what’s notable about this one is how the plan switched from building a $350 million seismically safe facility to creating a $860.8 million “hospital of the future.”

The folks at the announcement — the premier, Health Minister Adrian Dix, local MLAs, hospital staff and fundraisers — all provided their visions, but it was a comment from Vivian Eliopoulos, president and CEO of Vancouver Costal Health (VCH) that caught my attention. This will allow for greater “patient flow between services,” she explained. Had my 94--year-old mother not just left the hospital on Saturday after having been there for two weeks, that comment would have blown right past me — but not now. In the time my mom was there, she was in three different wards, attended by seven different doctors, numerous physiotherapists, a couple of pharmacists and a multitude of nurses. First, I’m well aware of the privilege of living in a community that provides that level of care to my loved one. I don’t take that for
granted, but here’s the catch. With all that baton passing, inevitably there are going to be slips. And that’s to say nothing of the transition home, because the hospital is, or at least should be, just one part of an integrated health care system. But it’s that integration or “flow” within the hospital and throughout the system that can be a challenge. If there is one frequent refrain we hear when talking about health care in Canada, it’s “gaps in the system.” Okay, let’s make that two refrains, “gaps in the system” and “courageous and compassionate health-care providers.” There truly are some beautiful people providing our care and I don’t want to dismiss that, but they can only do so much in a stretched and disjointed network. When my mom was in the hospital, we were melting under that infamous “heat dome” that saw what’s believed to be 10 heat-related deaths in Richmond alone. The hospital felt overwhelmed. Staff were
doing what they could but often were literally running from one patient to the next with no time to even look a patient in the eye or ask how they’re doing. We know more extreme weather is in the forecast. We also know COVID isn’t over and when it is another virus could take its place. And then there’s the “big one,” a seismic event that could make all this look like child’s play. The hospital of the future is going to need more than space and shiny new equipment. It’s also going to need a well-staffed, fully integrated design that recognizes the complexity of care. I know there are good minds at work planning exactly that. As Eliopoulos said, efficient flow is part of the template for our futuristic hospital, but it’s expensive and is going to require a commitment to universal health care we haven’t seen for decades — at least not at the level it needs to be. Here’s to hoping it can be realized by the time I’m 94.

King George Park Interpret the facts heart, lungs of city Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
They say parks are the lungs of the city and never has this been illustrated more than during the pandemic. The sprawling King George Park in Cambie has been the heart and the soul of the community when people needed a breath of fresh air as well as practice social distancing — and yet maintain social contact during COVID times. As someone who is currently visiting from New Zealand, which is equally green and salubrious, I couldn’t help but admire how the well-designed park has been playing a stellar role in terms of the well-being of the community. It’s been a springboard for people of all ages and races to let their hair down and be. From toddlers having the time of their lives in the water park area to families having a fun day out playing baseball; young mothers exchanging notes as their young ones expend all that extra energy in the play park; seniors sharing nibbles and barbecues — the park
has been a mecca for soccer, cricket and tennis enthusiasts, joggers, fitness freaks and dog walkers.
It feels as if it is not only the Richmond community that converges at the well-maintained park but also people from the North Shore, New Wesminister, Surrey and other areas. If this sounds like an ode to the King George/ Cambie Community Park, it is! The credit also goes to those who have designed the park and have been upgrading it with new features as well as the municipality for having maintained it. But most of all to the pioneering fathers of the city that gifted the initial land for the park. I would love to know more about the history of the King George Park but looks like there is not much information on Google. If there is someone willing to share how it is connected to the history of B.C., I’ll definitely be listening!

Re: Facts, not assumptions, needed, Letters, July 8. The reality of facts is found in interpretation, not in facts themselves.
There is an old saying that facts can’t speak for themselves. While it is true that facts alone can’t really do anything (they are symbolic, mere words, after all), they do inspire interpretation. Interpretation is the key to finding the reality of facts. If we accept this, history then becomes not a collection a loose facts but rather a question of who lived what facts and how. This is the interpretive dimension of all facts, and it is far more interesting than the infinite facts and figures themselves which, again, do and say nothing. Facts will never do the heavy lifting for us. Interpreting facts places the burden back on us to understand
facts within the contexts of people’s lives. Let’s not be so naive to assume that facts alone tell the stories.
The work of journalism is, like it or not, to frame the facts within a narrative. Facts, therefore, need to be seen within their living context of people’s lives, including the lives of journalists. The question to ask, then, is not what happened at Kamloops or anywhere else, but rather what kinds of lives have made history up? Not interpreting facts for ourselves, though slow and painful, removes us from the serious work of understanding, and with that we become less human. We should give up on being spoonfed facts above all else and do the dirty work of finding and interpreting (and thinking) for ourselves.

LETTERS Review city’s heat wave response Dear Editor,
how to respond?
I would like city council to report on how the city handled the heat health emergency during the recent heat wave.
Did the city check that water fountains were functional?
The one or two releases reminding residents how to cool down was not enough.
Was temporary shade set up where there was no tree canopy?
The RCMP announced ”four sudden deaths“ that alerted people of the disastrous effect of the heat wave only in the aftermath. During the peak period of the heat wave, did the fire department, the emergency social services department do anything? How many city staff were directly responsible to coordinate? Did the city have a strategy or initiate meetings to discuss
Did the city provide extra water fountains in places where there were none?
Did the city’s social services department check on seniors or vulnerable populations? I would rather the city do a thorough review of this wakeup call rather than point fingers at other levels of governments.
Albert Tsui

*Editor’s note: The RCMP later updated the number of sudden deaths to 10.

Why is seniors centre closed? Dear Editor, There was a time when the right action was to close the seniors centre and keep it closed, but that time has long passed. The City of Richmond has had the swimming pool and gym open for a long time but has kept the seniors centre closed. They now think they have done a lot by opening the cafeteria. Why is the billiard room, wood shop and all activity rooms still closed?
months ago as it is easy to follow appropriate COVID-19 protocols when you are playing a game which has a 5’x10’ table in the middle. With masks and hand cleaning this could have been safely opened months ago. As well, most seniors have been fully vaccinated for some time. For many seniors, the centre and its activities are a significant part of their social lives.
This is totally contrary to the latest B.C. guidance regarding COVID-19.
Opening on Sept. 7 is about four months later than it should have been opened.
The billiard room could have been opened

Media report in real time Dear Editor,
Re: Facts amiss in Kamloops, Letters, June 24 News media is not an academic journal nor is it a government commission. To ask of the news media not to “speculate or make assumptions” is to ask them not to print at all. There are many instances before where the news media has produced articles based on the assumptions of experts called to testify or its own editorial assumptions. Breaking news should not be and is not a historical review, that would not be timely and therefore not new.
Should the various news media outlets NOT report on 9/11 or the recent assassination of the president of Haiti as it is occurring despite having scanty details about those events? Should the news media wait for and ponder all the facts when there are currently many competing narratives and facts. In the study of history, historians use “factual and counter-factual information” because there are competing interests to create different narratives. There simply IS no one set of facts!

Activist calls on youth to fight for climate Fraser River to the airport, but with a proper environmental assessment and public hearings, it was eventually rejected.
Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
“Freaking idiots!” was the cry from a worker at the jet fuel tank farm in south Richmond, currently under construction, to a group of environmental activists who had gathered with signs just outside the property. About a dozen activists had gathered in front of the massive tanks that will hold jet fuel — shipped in on tankers up to 950 feet long — to be pumped to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Otto Langer, a retired biologist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), told the group he’s been pushing for protection of the Fraser River Estuary for 51 years, but it seems like it’s things are getting worse.
Otto Langer (foreground) has been fighting for the Fraser River estuary for half a century. Maria Rantanen photo “We need new blood out there and I think we have to be more political and legal than we’ve been in the past,” he said. Furthermore, because of COVID-19, local groups like Fraser River Voices and VAPOR have been inactive. Projects in the area include the jet fuel tank farm, the expansion
of the Tilbury LNG facility across the river, the proposed replacement of the George Massey Tunnel and further out in Tsawwassen, the expansion of the Roberts Bank Port of Vancouver facility. Langer noted, in the 1980s, the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation applied to bring tankers into the north arm of the

“Now we’re building this facility which is probably a hundred times the threat and the feds wouldn’t do a review even though it’s on federal property, federal river, federal fish, federal wildlife,” Langer said. Even the provincial assessment was voluntary, he added.
“Every time (the port builds) a marsh, they have a habitat bank and … that allows them to destroy habitat elsewhere such as Roberts Bank,” Langer said.

Hospital rebuild pegged at $860M than it currently has.

Premier John Horgan gave details on Richmond Hospital construction plans. Maria Rantanen photo
MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Richmondites can look forward to a decade of construction at Richmond Hospital, but can expect a state-of-the-art facility at the end of it. On Tuesday, the province announced it will cost $860.8 million to build a new north tower, renovate the south tower and expand emergency, mental health and diagnostics services with a final completion date of 2031. The project’s original budget was about $350 million, but last summer the premier and minister of health came to Richmond to announce several hundred million dollars were being added to the budget. Premier John Horgan said, at Tuesday’s announcement, they looked at the business plan and decided to make it bigger “to meet the needs of a growing population.” Health Minister Adrian Dix added the “reenvisioned project” was necessary, and, if the initial concept plan had been built, it
probably would have immediately needed to be expanded. “It’s an extraordinary amount of money, but in the context of the things that will happen here at the hospital in the next decade, it’s absolutely affordable and it’s what’s needed,” Dix said. Richmond Hospital was built in 1964 and Horgan said it is “decades beyond its bestbefore date.”
Come and try the best Blueberries in town!
Extensive consultation was done with hospital staff and the Richmond Hospital Foundation to make the design function for those working in the building, Horgan added, and he touted the design of the plans, saying it shouldn’t be made of “duct tape and bailing twine.” “This is a state-of-the-art facility that will be having professionals providing services to people,” Horgan said. All in all, the hospital, when fully rebuilt, will have 353 beds, which is 113 more
The hospital will be fully functioning during construction. The rebuild will happen in four phases, starting with the Milan Ilich Pavilion, followed by the demolition of Park Centre where the new north tower will be built. Design and procurement on the pavilion is starting now, and construction should start next year. The new north tower is expected to be done by 2028, but the final phase of the project, demolishing the old tower and building a power plant, won’t be finished until 2031. The new north tower will be called the Yurkovich Family Pavilion and will house intensive care, an expanded emergency department and more operating rooms. The south tower and the Milan Ilich Pavilion will then be renovated and expanded, with a completion date of 2029. It will include cancer care, outpatient clinics and the UBC school of medicine. — with files from Kirsten Clarke

Candy store owners left with bitter taste over permit delay The permit, she said, was submitted at the beginning of April and “officially went through” about the second week.
Valerie Leung
VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Owners of a yet-to-open candy store are frustrated it took 14 weeks for the city to approve a “simple renovation” permit. Lenny Entwistle and business partner Elly Fenton, owners of Steveston Sweets Shoppe, finally received their permit after a little over three months of constant calling and following-up with the City of Richmond. The shop is a one-stop shop for international candy, located on First Avenue between Moncton and Chatham streets, between the Village Books and Coffee House and Steveston’s Best of British stores.

Entwistle, who also owns Best of British, told the Richmond News they requested the permit for a dividing wall between the Sweet Shoppe and the book store, as well as installing tracking (ceiling) lights. “Frustrated doesn’t even describe how we feel,” said Entwistle. “We even thought about giving up, but we signed the lease and we are already deep into this with a contract. We are just too close to opening and it’s really just this permit that’s stopping us...”
However, she heard nothing after that, other than being told “to be patient because (the city) was busy” and that their application was doing the rounds. According to city spokesperson Clay Adams, the city will generally “try to connect” with applicants within an eight-week window. “The city is aware that businesses...are always keen to move forward with their projects as quickly as possible, so we try to triage applications in order to deal with more straight forward projects first,” said Adams, adding that each application is different and processing times vary. “However, this is not always possible and a complex application has the same rights to service as something which may appear to be more straightforward.” Regardless, given the simplicity of their application, Entwistle doesn’t think it should have taken more than three months to approve. The Steveston Sweet Shoppe is expecting to open no later than the second week of August.

Concerns raised over water safety measures
Only a handful of signs have been erected around Richmond’s shores warning of the dangers of one of the province’s “deadliest” rivers — not nearly enough to help save lives, according to one local teacher.
Steveston Village’s walkways and piers, River Road or around the docks behind the Pacific Gateway Hotel.
It was near the Pacific Gateway Hotel that 24-year-old UBC athlete and Hugh Boyd Secondary alumnus Kory Nagata lost his life last summer while attempting to retrieve a football that had fallen into the water.
Michael Taylor — who is also calling on the Ministry of Education to amend the physical education curriculum to include water safety education — said he felt compelled to take action after learning how little his friends and students know about water safety. “The Fraser River is the deadliest river in this province — it can appear calm and accessible in some areas but the water current is very dangerous and the public should be aware of that,” he said. And it’s not just Taylor who is concerned about the dangers of the river. Christina Giuliani is questioning people’s decision-making after seeing adults and children swimming about 100 metres off the
Michael Taylor says current water safety signage in Richmond is insufficient. Valerie Leung photo beaches at Garry Point Park over the weekend. The born-and-raised Steveston resident knows the area well — the Fraser River is a busy thoroughfare for boats and merchant ships and isn’t suitable for swimming. “The currents can change where the ocean is meeting the end of the Fraser River. You don’t know
what’s going on below the surface and it’s extremely dangerous.” While Taylor, who teaches at Hugh Boyd Secondary, said he’s seen three signs posted around Garry Point, one at London Landing and another small sign at Imperial Landing, he hasn’t seen any in “high traffic” regions around the city, such as along

According to data from the BC Coroners Service, over 660 people fatally drowned in B.C. waterways between 2008 and 2016 — many during the summer months. Nineteen to 29-year-olds made up the largest proportion of the accidental drowning deaths. The data also states that 32 people lost their lives in the Fraser River during that period, more than any other river or creek in B.C. City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams said the water safety rules around Richmond are simple — do not swim.
“The Fraser River is a cold, strong, fast-moving and unpredictable body of water that is not recommended for swimming,” he said, adding the city has “numerous” signs which have been in place for “many years.” He said there’s signage at London and Imperial Landings, McDonald Beach and Garry Point, plus emergency life-rings and waterside safety ladders at Imperial Landing and Britannia Shipyards.
But Taylor doesn’t believe “the size, placement and number of signs at these locations is sufficient to attract attention and adequately inform the public of the risks.” He has also reached out to the Ministry of Education, suggesting they make “simple amendments to include language around water safety education” in the high school physical education curriculum. —Kirsten Clarke, Nono Shen/ Richmond News

Local group calls out senate leader over Uyghur genocide comment Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
The Canadian senate’s refusal to support a bill that labels China’s treatment of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims as genocide is “symptomatic of the Chinese communist government’s infiltration and influence in Canadian politics and a cause for alarm,” according to a Richmond group. On June 29, a motion to declare the situation in China a genocide, was defeated in the upper chamber, with 33 senators voting against the bill, 29 voting in favour of it and 13 abstaining. The motion had passed the House of Commons in February. A Richmond-based organization, the Chinese Canadian Concerned Group, is disappointed with the defeat of Motion 79 but even more infuriated with comments that followed the vote. In a speech to the senate, Independent Senators Group (ISG) Leader, Sen. Yuen Pau Woo, who is also a Singaporean-Canadian academic who served as the president and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, stated the importance of Canadians having accurate and comprehensive information regarding the situation in China. “Each country functions within its unique historical, cultural and political context, but we believe that there are universal values to be upheld and common lessons that can be shared across borders. When it comes to the treatment of Indigenous peoples and minorities, repression and forced assimilation only lead to longer-term problems for society at large,” he said. “Canadians are still wrestling with those longer-term problems in our society, and it is impossible for us not to express concern over what we hear about Xinjiang. We do it because we recognize our common humanity with Uighurs and all peoples in China, and out of a desire for China to succeed as a nation of many ethnicities,” he added. Mabel Tung, a spokesperson of the Concerned Group, said Woo’s comments are “provocative” and an attempt to deflect criticism away from China.

“Is it the case that those who have made mistakes cannot ever post criticisms of others?” Tung added. Victor Ho, former editor-in-chief of Sing Tao Daily and Concern Group’s spokesperson, said the Senate’s vote once again exposes the flawed, undemocratic nature of the appointment process and its lack of accountability. “China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson quickly applauded Canadian senators who voted against the motion, which reflects that these senators hold values that are in direct contradiction to Canadian values and betray the Canadian public,” said Ho. In late February, 266 of 338 Canadian MPs voted in favour of a motion that says China’s actions in its western Xinjiang region meet the definition of genocide set out in the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention.

While there’s a “Don’t walk” sign for pedestrians when the cars on the ramp have a green light, it seems many people — as well as some cyclists — don’t seem to notice it and scramble to cross in between the cars, explained Judy Kim, a Surrey resident who spends a lot of time in Richmond. The city said it hasn’t received any complaints about the intersection, and it will eventually be changed when the mall is redeveloped, explained city spokesperson Clay Adams.

Pedestrians can be seen walking along No. 3 Road as cars come barreling down a ramp from a parkade at Richmond Centre, and one pedestrian worries “someone is going to get killed there.”
Kim said, after she went back to look at the intersection again, she noticed
the “Walk/Don’t walk” signal for pedestrians, but it wasn’t obvious to her previously. The whole area, including foot traffic from the Canada Line Brighouse Station and vehicle traffic around the mall, is very busy, she explained. “There’s too much going on in that area.” Adams said pedestrians, like vehicles, have a “shared responsibility” around safety. “While drivers must adhere to lights
and signs, so must pedestrians,” he said. “Entering an intersection on a ‘Don’t walk’ sign is not permitted and crossing timers are to inform how long a person has to exit the crossing, not actually enter and cross the roadway.” Eventually, the driveway with the ramp will be removed and a crossing with curbs and ramps will be installed once the mall is redeveloped into a mixed commercial/residential area. CF Richmond Centre has started demolishing the southside of the mall in anticipation of redevelopment.

Raising a ‘COVID puppy” no walk in park “So we both wore masks in our backyard and we let the puppies play because I knew they had to have some playtime.”
Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
While Echo still shows fear aggression, and is nervous around children and skateboards, he has been improving and is getting better with other dogs.
For many, the pandemic seemed like the perfect time to add to their family — or so the thinking went. Dog adoptions soared during the COVID-19 pandemic — the BC SPCA reported last year that some animals, such as puppies, may receive as many as 200 applications for the same animal — as people spent more time at home and isolated.
Ritchie found plenty of exercise — they go for twohour walks each day — helps, as does going to the dog park. She also constantly works to train him. “I train him when we greet other dogs, so when I see a dog coming around the corner on the path, I make him sit, I give him a treat — he has to look at me — but the training just when you’re greeting is really helpful, because he has to sit before he greets.”
But it’s not just people who were affected by that isolation. “I didn’t mean for it to be this way. I didn’t want him to be a COVID puppy,” said Richmond resident Allisa Ritchie.
A boom in puppy sales during the pandemic has led to many dogs not being socialized with other dogs and humans. Echo is on the right. Allisa Ritchie photo
Ritchie and her family originally planned to get their puppy in November 2020 after travelling, but when those plans were cancelled due to the pandemic they ended up adopting Echo, a poodle, in August of last year.
And out on walks, people would typically keep their distance from each other because of COVID-19.
It’s proven to be a challenge, she said, raising a puppy during the pandemic, which meant that Echo — now 11 months old and affectionately known as “snub puppy” — wasn’t able to meet many other dogs or people.
While each breed and owner is different, Ritchie believes many new dog owners are having similar issues, as she and Echo have encountered other under-socialized dogs while out on their walks.
“My challenges were, that we had nobody in the house except the three of us — my son, my husband and I — and so he really didn’t see a lot of people.”
Ritchie said she and a friend, who also adopted a puppy last year, were able to arrange play dates for the two.
Ritchie said she may also start arranging backyard play dates with more dogs depending on people’s comfort level. She also hopes new dog owners will help and be patient with each other and their dogs. Asking before approaching an unknown dog can also be helpful, Ritchie said, adding she found squatting down to the dog’s level can be a non-threatening way for them to get to know you. “Let’s all work together — let’s observe basic COVID rules and get our dogs used to each other,” she said. “Move slowly. All this effort will pay off in the long run,” she added.
Gardeners upset by ‘pigsty’ comment Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Moncton is one of the most pretty (community gardens). I’m not sure what he saw.
Urban Bounty, which manages Richmond’s community gardens, was shocked to see one councillor complain about a community garden in Steveston looking like a pigsty. Ian Lai, executive director of Urban Bounty — formerly the Richmond Food Security Society — said he thinks this is just one councillor’s opinion, and the society receives a lot of support from the city for the work they do to manage the city’s 11 community gardens. “Moncton is one of most pretty (community gardens),” Lai said, adding “I’m not sure what he saw.” In a letter to the Richmond News, Lai said “gardeners are varied and so are their gardens.” “Community gardens are not manicured spaces like a French garden and having that expectation is unrealistic,” Lai explained in his letter. Coun. Bill McNulty made the comment recently at a committee meeting where another proposed community
The community garden on the Railway Greenway at Moncton Street that Coun. Bill McNulty labelled as a ‘pigsty.’ garden — next to Birchwood Estates on the Railway greenspace — was the subject of complaints from residents. McNulty said the community garden on Moncton looked like a “pigsty” nine-tenths of the year. Urban Bounty manages all 11 cityowned community garden sites, and each one has a garden captain, Lai explained. There are rules on how they are run, all approved by the city’s parks department, Lai added. In fact, Lai said, Urban Bounty has a good relationship with the parks

department, which provides water for irrigation, fencing, sheds, soil and mulch and green bin services. There are times when gardens do look messy, Lai added, but the garden captain will then report that and Urban Bounty will work with the gardener to remedy the situation. The complaint about the proposed community garden at Birchwood Estates prompted the committee to ask staff for more information on proposed community gardens and maintenance rules. The item is expected to come up at the next parks, recreation and cultural services meeting and Lai said he will ask to make a presentation at that meeting.

RCRG awards bridgebuilding grants A Richmond charity awarded more than $13,000 worth of grants to Richmond residents to build bridges between cultures and strengthen connections among neighbours. Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) distributed $13,295 as part of its Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants program, which funded 29 community projects this summer. The program allowed Richmond residents to apply for up to $500 toward a community project. Among the grant recipients was 10-year-old Allison Sam who used the funds to create and deliver homemade cards with flower bouquets, donated by PriceSmart Foods, to her neighbours. According to RCRG, the 10-year-old’s community project had recipients returning thank you cards in appreciation.

Meet Richmond’s Olympians heading to Tokyo Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
With just eight days to go until the start of the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, the Richmond News sat down via Zoom video link with some of Richmond’s Olympic hopefuls. Four of the six we chatted with talked candidly about their preparations, hopes and dreams for the upcoming Games. Below is a brief profile of each athlete, but all four video interviews can be seen at Richmond-News.com by searching “Meet Richmond’s Olympians.” Evan Dunfee, 50K racewalker Born and bred in Richmond, Evan Dunfee lives in and trains in his home city. Dunfee — who came agonizingly close to winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio — can often be seen on the streets of Richmond, pounding out his daily 25 to 30K routine. He made history at the 2019 World Athletics Championships when he won bronze to become Canada’s first ever medallist in the 50K race walk. The 30-year-old Canadian-record holder over 10,000 metres and 50K is desperate to make amends for the incident late in that 2016 race when he appeared to be bumped by a Japanese opponent, effectively costing him the bronze medal. Dunfee received national and internation-
al acclaim in the aftermath of the race for not appealing the judge’s decision to give his rival, Hirooki Arai, the bronze.
has called Richmond home since 2004.
In the video interview, Dunfee jokes about his plans to avoid a repeat of Rio and also talks about how he uses frozen women’s stockings to keep cool during a race.
After graduating from Richmond Secondary’s IB Program, Gordon went first to Penn State University, where he finished second in the NCAA championship.
He has been training at the Dynamo Fencing Club in north Richmond.
He then moved to University of Pennsylvania, where he helped the team to win the Ivy League championship in 2016.
Eli Schenkel, fencer The News caught up with Eli Schenkel outside a Portuguese sandwich shop near Team Canada’s fencing base in Montreal.
In the video, Gordon tells how he took up fencing age seven after watching a Zorro cartoon. Nate Hirayama, rugby sevens
Schenkel, who was named to the team after the last qualifying event in Qatar in the spring, has achieved a lifetime ambition to compete at the Olympics. The 28-year-old co-owns and operates SClass Fencing on Voyageur Way in north Richmond with his brother, Joseph. In the Zoom interview, Schenkel talks about how he started fencing age 10 and about the sacrifices he’s made over the last two years to achieve his Olympic dream.
Richmond’s rugby sevens star Nate Hirayama may be making his Olympic debut in Tokyo, but the 33-year-old is by no means a stranger to the big occasion. He has represented Canada at several big events, including three Commonwealth Games and three Pan American Games, winning two gold medals and one silver. Hirayama is also Canada’s greatest points scorer in rugby sevens and, at the end of the 2020 season, he sat third all-time in the World Rugby Sevens Series scoring and leads Canada in tries and matches played.
Shaul Gordon, fencer The second of two Richmond-based fencers heading to the Games, Shaul Gordon is an alumnus of Richmond Secondary.
In his Zoom video interview, Hirayama talks about his preparations ahead of flying out to Japan and he explains why his nickname is “Spicy Nate.”
Gordon — who started fencing age seven in Italy, where he lived with his family —
He also talks up Canada’s outside chances of a shot at the podium.

Rogers has been starring in the NCAA for the Cal-Berkley Bears, shattering U.S. collegiate records in the process. Just last month, she threw an incredible 75.52 metres — the fourth longest throw in the world this year — to win gold. Rogers initially broke the previous NCAA record of 73.32 with her first throw of 74.97, before beating it again with a 75.52-metre launch on the final throw of the competition. Mo Zhang, table tennis Mo Zhang is a three-time Olympian who has competed at four Pan American Games where she has won six medals. After winning team silver at the 2007 Pan Am Games, Zhang, 32, was victorious in the singles event at Guadalajara 2011. At Toronto 2015, Zhang teamed with Anqi Luo and Alicia Côté to win team bronze while finishing fifth in singles. Further back, she started playing table tennis at age six, before moving to Canada with her family in 2003.

Car dealer expands into home building Valerie Leung

Richmond’s OpenRoad Auto Group has branched out into the real estate industry, starting with a development in Vancouver. The new company, which goes by the name OpenForm Properties, was established in October 2019 and is focusing on the residential real estate market with its first multi-family project titled E15 Just off Main. Norm Shearing, president of OpenForm Properties, said the opportunity to expand presented itself naturally when its Honda dealership in Burnaby outgrew its space and OpenRoad decided to relocate it. “(OpenRoad) saw an opportunity to

When asked if there were any difficulties expanding into a new industry, he said they aren’t “too worried.” “OpenRoad has technically been in the real estate industry by purchasing land and developing it for its dealerships. Our team is well-versed and has a lot of experience in the development side and it’s the residential part that is new,” said Shearing. Besides the 49-unit townhouse project in Vancouver, OpenForm has a residential tower and properties in Burnaby and is looking to develop in other municipalities in the future, according to Shearing. While OpenForm is temporarily located in Vancouver, the final location for the brand’s office has yet to be decided.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning about paving scammers, with reports of activity all over B.C., including in Richmond. Since the start of summer, BBB’s Scam Tracker has received almost 30 reports of unscrupulous contractors who trick homeowners with supposedly good deals. Homeowners end up with shoddy paving work, or nothing at all, with some people paying more than $8,000.
The scam works by a “contractor” leaving a pamphlet or showing up at the door, claiming they have been doing work in the area and just happened to notice the condition of your driveway or sidewalk. According to the BBB, the scammer will claim to be able to give you a discount as they “are already working nearby” and will usually ask for a large percentage of the fee or the total amount up front. Once they have received the money, the scam contractor may promise to start the job within a few days and then disappear completely. There have been instances when the work was completed but totally shoddy. Any attempts to follow up to rectify the job are futile as the contractor gave out false information.
One recent instance in Richmond, say the BBB, led to a potential victim asking too many questions of the contractor. “A young man came to our door offering to re-do the tar coat on our driveway,” the Richmond resident told the BBB. “But when we started asking questions about his business and experience, the answers did not give us any confidence. He was forcing us to take the deal, changing the price a few times and that made us very uncomfortable.” How to avoid contractor scams: • Be wary of unsolicited offers. • Research companies and contractors before you hire. Start with BBB.org. • Get everything in writing. Ask for an estimate in writing before payment is even discussed.
• Stagger payments. Most contractors will require a percentage of the total price up front, but it should never be the full price before the work has begun. • Use safe payment methods. Paying by cash or using an electronic wallet app is risky. Search Paving scammers for full story at Richmond-News.com

ANNOUNCEMENTS FARROW, William F. January 8, 1943 − July 04, 2021 We are deeply saddened by the passing of a loving husband, father and ’papa’ on Sunday, July 4, 2021. Bill is survived by his wife of 44 years, Yvonne, son Paul and daughter Jennifer Reed (Chad), granddaughter Presley, brother Brian (Isle of Man), sister−in−law Jackie (brother John deceased) (London), sister and brother−in−law Lana and Dennis Sheridan of San Francisco and nieces and nephews in the United States and England. Bill lived life to the fullest and often said he had no regrets. In his younger years he traveled the world and used his skills as a journeyman carpenter to work throughout Australia and New Zealand before settling in Canada. Bill was a talented soccer player, coaching Paul in his younger years. He loved taking the family in the fifth wheel looking for new places to explore. Bill had a wonderful sense of humour and loved entertaining everyone with stories of his antics during his many travels. The family wishes to thank the staff on 3 South and 4 North of Richmond Hospital and the exceptional staff at the Salvation Army Rotary Hospice for their care and compassion. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Diabetes Association at bcdiabetes.ca or 400−210 West Broadway, Vancouver V5Y 3W2 would be greatly appreciated.
