Making space for anti-vax views Eve Edmonds

“Liberals announce election platform of things they could have easily done before now.” If there is a headline that sums up this election campaign, I’d say it’s this one from the satirical online publication The Beaverton. Or maybe it doesn’t sum it up so much as explain the “Why the heck are we doing this, anyway?” attitude that has dominated. (The editor of The Beaverton was on CBC radio Wednesday morning which got me perusing their site.) Granted, we often hear a collective groan when an election is called. And the provincial NDP was taken to task over the same issue, particularly by the Greens, who said they had backed the provincial NDP on all their major initiatives. Still, something feels different. Back in the fall of 2020 we hadn’t slipped into the fourth wave of COVID, the NDP

had at least governed for more than three years as opposed to the Liberals’ two, and the election wasn’t called in the middle of summer. But actually the biggest difference is this rising tide of hostility and polarization. Protestors swearing and throwing rocks at the Prime Minister? Really? That’s not just appalling, it’s also humiliating. How do we maintain our national reputation as polite and orderly folks with that kind of footage going viral around the world? (It’s so Canadian to be worried about what others will think of us.) Moreover, we can see where it leads. There has been no storming of Parliament, but there were protestors outside of Vancouver hospitals screaming at the very people who have put themselves on the front line to keep the rest of us safe. How do we even relate to people like that? The Beaverton’s headline on that story is, “Anti-vax protestors throw rocks at Trudeau due to not having entered the Bronze Age yet.” But are they all Neanderthals?

At the Richmond News, we are hosting two election debates: Sept. 9, featuring Richmond Centre candidates and Sept. 13, featuring Steveston-Richmond East candidates. We invited all candidates, including those from the People’s Party of Canada (PPC). In other words, including candidate for Steveston-Richmond East Jennifer Singh who took to Twitter to encourage people to go to that hospital demonstration where workers were yelled at and intimidated. (I know one hospital worker who was so disgusted by what he faced during one of those demonstrations, he phoned in sick the following day.) But here is where we need to see the bigger picture. I have spoken with Singh via email and she’s been nothing but friendly, respectful and committed to what she believes are Canadians’ democratic rights. It’s really too bad that she won’t be able to take part in the debate as she said her schedule is booked until the election. You may also notice that in our candidate

profile section on pages 8-14 there are no profiles for either of the PPC candidates. Again, this was not about freezing anyone out. We asked both candidates to participate but got no response from the Richmond Centre candidate, and Singh’s profile came in too late for our print deadline. My point with all this is that, while I fear the anti-vax movement, and I’m disgusted by protestors throwing rocks at the PM or intimidating health workers, I’m even more fearful of the growing gulf between “us” and “them.” It is hard to think big and encompassing. It’s hard to be generous and tolerant. And, frankly, some people are just too angry and myopic for any meeting of the minds. But I can only start with myself, both as a citizen and editor of a community newspaper, to create space where respectful conversations can happen. Granted, not everything can be on the table. Racism is not debatable, for example. But a lot can be negotiated if we start from a place of respect and show a genuine willingness to listen to what’s behind the placard.

Anti-vaxxers remain a COVID-19 target An open letter to all who don’t believe and refuse to be vaccinated, I never cease to be amazed by you who still think that this virus and pandemic is a hoax, This “Flat Earth thinking” is ridiculous in my view, in that you can protest with this rigid and myopic view of the present danger. To even try and understand this is mind boggling at best, and so I am very confused as to why you would want to endanger your own lives, as well as the lives of others around you. This, to me, is only assisting the virus, in killing as many people as possible, and I can see this led to a 5th pandemic or even a 6th one, or more.

Because of your continued actions, this could last for years to come, and I believe the consequences will all be on your shoulders. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, COVID-19 cases are now 12 times higher among unvaccinated than vaccinated, and of this fact I am not surprised, and I will also not be surprised to see this number rise. To all of you who still think this is a hoax and refuse to get vaccinated, it is true that no one can force you, but it is also true that you remain a target for the virus, or are even a virus carrier, and so I wish you luck with what little life you will have left.

Stung by store’s mask demand Dear Editor, I visited Shoppers Drug Mart at No. 5 and Cambie and, unwittingly, forgot to wear my face mask, which I always do. I was immediately reminded as I walked in the door and offered to return to my car to retrieve my mask but was offered one by the female staffer. But it’s what she said, as she handed me the mask, that got my attention. She made it clear to me that customers are usually charged 80 cents. A quick calculation determined that this would amount to $80 per 100-box netted for a box of cheap masks which, by the way, fell apart when I tried to remove it afterwards. I thought to myself, what greed, such insensitivity for a community drug store. You would think that a mask would be offered and freely available, courtesy of the store, rather than customers being asked to fork out for a cheap face mask.

Who’s top of tree? Dear Editor,

There is a total lack of communication and accountability regarding property edge city trees and their pruning schedule in our older city neighbourhoods. The street I live on has got have some of the most overgrown trees in the city! In the last two years I have had to repair my gutters twice, received damage to my vehicle and have had to dodge frustrated neighbours because the trees in front of my home need heavy pruning. On top of this, there are about a dozen trees on our side of the street that have the same issue. Here is my issue: When my neighbours or myself call or email for support about heavy trimming or service, we need either more funding, cooperation or accountability in solving these issues. Of the six interactions I’ve had with the city regarding my situation, only twice has somebody been dispatched to deal with a tree branch that was hanging precariously. I certainly understand the issue that before more stringent bylaws were put into place, Richmondites were cutting down trees left and right. However, I think due to the city owning decision making on trees being pruned for such a long time it might be time to review the policy and put some resources in place.

A multi-vehicle crash in Richmond on Labour Day Monday caused a busy intersection to be partially shut down.

A drunk driver who ended up in a ditch in Richmond was rescued — by another drunk driver.

The crash happened at the intersection of Blundell and Gilbert roads at around 9:40 a.m. on Monday. Richmond News reader Grant McMillan said Richmond RCMP sealed off the area for some time as the crash was cleared.

A Richmond resident told the Richmond News how he was aware of a driver ending up in the ditch late at night on Gilbert Road, just south of Steveston Highway, on Friday, Sept. 3. He said the driver who somehow ended up in the ditch was later “picked up by another drunk driver and both were caught and charged.” Indeed, Richmond RCMP confirmed to the News that it arrived at the scene at around 11:30 p.m. on Friday for a “single vehicle collision into a ditch.” According to police, the driver of the black Mercedes in the ditch was the sole occupant. However, prior to the Mounties’ arrival,

the driver of the Mercedes “attempted to leave in another vehicle, but police were able to stop it.

“The ensuing investigation resulted in both the driver involved in the collision, as well as the driver who picked him up, being issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition.” Both vehicles, say police, were also impounded for 30 days. Body pulled from Fraser River A body was pulled from the south arm of the Fraser River in Richmond last Thursday morning. Richmond RCMP said they were called about 6:50 a.m. with a report of a body being spotted in the river at the foot of Gilbert Road, where it meets Dyke Road. Shortly afterwards, the RCMP’s Fraser Guardian vessel recovered the body from the water. The body has been identified, but the RCMP added that no further information will be released “out of respect for (the) next of kin.”

At around 11 p.m. on Aug. 22, police were called to a robbery in progress at in the 9,000 block of Williams Road. Parent worried about school air quality

spent $2.1 million during the pandemic to improve air quality in its schools.

Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

One Richmond parent is worried about the air quality in schools as his three kids go back to the classroom during the fourth wave of the pandemic. Patrick Chesters said he’s been told by school district staff that Dixon elementary, which his kids attend, is too old — and its wiring is too old — to support a new air ventilation system. While the school district states that all Richmond schools meet the public health standards, this includes keeping windows open to ventilate where there is no HVAC system. COVID-19 is known to spread through aerosol spray – which is why public health recommendations include wearing masks and keeping physically apart from other people. But Chesters would like to see some creative think-

A 65-year-old classroom is prime breeding ground (for the virus). PATRICK CHESTERS ing to get elementary students, who can’t be vaccinated, into safer spaces. Many Richmond high schools are newer than elementary schools with newer HVAC systems. However, high school students are able to get vaccinated whereas children under the age of 12 can’t – but they’re the ones in older schools with older air systems, Chesters added. “A 65-year-old classroom is prime breeding ground (for the virus),” Chesters said. The school district has

David Sadler, school district spokesperson, said all public schools in Richmond, including Dixon, are “fully compliant” with ventilation requirements. Direction comes from public health officials to make sure air ventilation systems meet provincial standards, he added. Any classrooms, libraries or other school facilities that don’t have mechanical ventilation systems will have their windows open “as much as possible to ensure outdoor air is naturally exchanged with inside air,” Sadler explained. Heating in these rooms will be monitored by maintenance staff. In its long-range facilities plan, Dixon is listed in “poor” condition with a high seismic and liquefaction risk and would need almost $10 million to make it safe in the event of an earthquake.

Temple expands Maria Rantanen

MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

After 18 years of stops and starts in the planning process, construction work has begun at a Buddhist temple on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven. But the original plan to expand LingYen Mountain Temple has been reduced by half. In 2014, the proposal was to expand by almost 200,000 square feet and the temple was asking to build into the farming portion of the property — encroaching more than 300 feet into the “backland,” which is supposed to be actively farmed. The plans have been pulled back, and the expansion will be about 94,000 square feet and won’t encroach into the agricultural area. Highway to Heaven runs on No. 5 Road from Steveston Highway to Blundell Road and is located in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). It was created to allow reli-

gious institutions to build facilities for worship with the stipulation that the easterly side — the “backlands” — are farmed. Parking, building height, residences reduced in temple plan

While the building expansion at the LingYen Mountain Temple has been reduced by half, parking has only been reduced by 15 per cent. There will be 385 new stalls in a parking structure, down from 456 originally proposed. The “Main Buddha Hall” will be 90 feet high, 14 feet lower than originally planned. There will also be fewer nuns and monks living on the property and less capacity for retreat participants. LingYen Mountain Temple held a purification ceremony to mark the beginning of the temple’s expansion after the building permit was issued this summer. Fundraiser for resident, 25, with brain cancer Friends and family are rallying around a 25-year-old Richmond resident, who has just been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain cancer. Just a few weeks ago, Matt Jones — after experiencing a number of unexplained seizures — was hospitalized and underwent a biopsy and MRI.

Matt Jones GoFundMe photo

Unfortunately, the diagnosis confirmed that he had glioblastoma, a life-limiting brain cancer. According to the GoFundMe page set up by a relative of Matt, the family are understandably “devastated” by the news, especially since the family lost their mother, Carolyn Reimer Jones, in December 2019. “Matt is still experiencing seizures and his medication has been increased significantly to help manage them,” reads the fundraising post. “Matt will need to immediately undergo intensive radiation and chemotherapy, and potentially surgery in the near future. Unfortunately the tumour’s specific location in Matt’s brain makes surgery a last resort. The hope is that these various treatments will slow progression of the cancer and reduce signs and symptoms.” With Matt needing to focus on his treatment, the fundraiser is hoping to raise $50,000 to help “the family with costs associated with lost wages, a second car needed to transport him to his intensive radiation and chemotherapy sessions in Vancouver, hire potential various home support services, help pay for potential accommodation closer to VGH and support Matt to fulfill dreams and wishes he has yet to realize.” The fundraiser has already managed to gather more than $20,000. Marvel movie helps balance playing field: actress Valerie Leung

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

“We aren’t at the point where we’re all on fair playing grounds, but we’re making our way there.” Richmond-based actress Jennifer Tong is elated that Asians and people of colour are another step closer to having “an equal chance” in the film industry after hearing about Hollywood’s first Asian-led superhero movie. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, currently playing in theatres, is the first Asian-American superhero movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is the first Marvel Studios film with an Asian director and a predominantly Asian cast and is being eagerly anticipated by the local Chinese community if WeChat is anything to go by. The film follows martial arts master Shang-Chi, played by Chinese-Canadian actor Simu Liu, who confronts his past and an organization called Ten Rings where he trained

action” for Asian representation in Hollywood.

Tong, a McMath secondary alumnus who has taken up roles in many theatre and TV shows, said Asian representation in the film industry has been, and still is, an “emotional and touchy subject.”

“It’s also a call to action for every creative, every actor, director, screenwriter of colour watching this movie. This is a watershed moment. Now is our time to step into the light and to work really, really hard, because we have to be good above all else. None of this would work if the movie wasn’t of the quality that it was.”

However, she called the release of Shang-Chi a “step forward.”

“Growing up, being an actor or actress is hard. But being an actress of colour, there is this added layer of you knowing that you have to work twice as hard because there isn’t as many opportunities,” said Tong, adding that more diversity is needed in the industry. “Yes actors play a huge role in the filmmaking industry, but people in positions of power, such as the writers, creators, producers and executives, are the ones who can enact the most change … and are the ones making the decisions.”

Tong highlighted a recent film, Crazy Rich Asians, and noted that it was “the big turning point” in Hollywood’s film industry for the Asian community. “Films like Crazy Rich Asians and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before show that film leads can be Asian, and Western audiences can still enjoy and relate to the characters,” she said. “Shang-Chi is another step up from this because we get to see an Asian leading role in a Marvel superhero movie, which is just awesome.” —With files from Canadian Press

In a video interview, Shang-Chi’s lead male actor Liu, said the movie is a “watershed moment” and is a “call to

Skating star, 16, wins gold

Standing with his coach, Richmond figure skating star Wesley Chiu waited patiently, but nervously, for three long minutes as the judges mulled his final routine.

Wesley, 16, had held a commanding 13-point lead heading into the deciding long program at the 2021 ISU Junior Grand Prix in Courcheval, France, on the weekend. And he was worried a couple of early mistakes in his long program may have cost him a chance at an amazing gold medal, which would have been the first for a B.C. athlete in 15 years at this top, international level. But when the scores finally came in, Wesley, as the last skater, knew he’d done enough to hold onto an in-

It was a big relief as, going into the competition, I had put a lot of work in. All the stress came off.”

“Our goal was 200 points and he got 199.9, so, that’s pretty close,” laughed Murphy, adding that 200 would normally be enough to challenge for a gold medal. “It was a very special feeling (to see Wesley on the podium), as I’ve been teaching him since he was seven,” he said. —Alan Campbell/News Search Wesley for full story at Richmond-News.com

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Benjjamin Moore location at Blundell Centre showed its customers it was so much more than just a trusted place to pick out new paint colours. It is also an excellent source for advice and tips on how to apply new paint in a way that brightens and freshens up homes too. And now, as we slowly start to ease back to normalcy, Benjamin Moore will resume its workshops to give customers more one-on-one, hands-on assistance.

“A lot of customers are fine with painting a room but don’t have as much experience with the finer, detail work like doors, trim, furniture and the cabinetry they want to spruce up,” Jimenez says. “So, some of our DIY workshops will address the application of paint finishes to get the results they are looking for.” To take part in the workshops, customers are required to sign-up. While the pandemic kept many people closer to home, it stoked plenty of creative fires regarding home improvement.

“We found that people were encouraged through the pandemic to slow down and take care of the things that tend to be put on the back-burner,” Jimenez says. “It was an interesting shift as a lot of homeowners came in and picked up products for their projects.” And that flow in customer traffic has been consistent for the past 18 months or so. “A lot of customers originally focused on exterior house paints, with an emphasis on the willingness of people wanting to learn how to do the work themselves,” Jimenez says. “The DIY aspect was clearly at the top of their minds since many tradespeople weren’t able to readily adapt to coming into contact with customers during the pandemic. “The nice thing about that was we were able to offer our expertise and service to help and encourage customers to get through this challenging time while helping them beautify their homes and make it a comfortable space,” she says. “Most customers are not experts in this, so much of what we did was helping people go through the steps to get the job done right,” she adds. “And we felt good knowing we could support them and their projects.” For more information about how Benjamin Moore at Blundell Centre can help with your home improvement plans, visit their website at benjjaminmoorevan.com.
