Waterworks come The day of tree We need a v condo cometh hardware store on for old pool Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

Steveston needs a hardware store. We have enough restaurants, ice cream places, nail parlours and coffee shops.

Centennial Pool at Minoru Park was built in 1958 and named to commemorate the Centennial of BC becoming a British Colony in 1858 (B.C. joined Canada in 1872).

We need a hardware store so people — needing a bolt or two or a new screwdriver — don’t have to drive all the way to Rona or Canadian Tire to get a small item.

The Centennial Pool was enclosed in 1984 and the overall facility joined with an adjacent pool as the Minoru Aquatic Centre.

The lumber yard made way for a development and the building that had the hardware store on Moncton has been unoccupied for two years. Do hardware stores not fit into the gentrification template? Are they not cool or hip enough?

From 1987, our kids took lessons there. From 2001 through 2017, I swam there about five mornings a week.

Maybe a new name for this type of store is needed to make it attractive: How about “Nuts & Bolts Heaven,” or “The Cool Tool Place,” or “PIT (Put It Together) STOP.”

From 2005 to 2011, I took a couple of my granddaughters, from the time they were about 18 months old until they started kindergarten, there about five mornings a week.

Surely there is an entrepreneur out there who would be creative enough to make a hardware store work in the village.

I was very involved, over several years, with the planning for the new Minoru Centre for Active Living, which is now mostly open (with COVID-19 safety protocols).

Dear Editor, I would like to inform readers in Richmond that many card games have restarted at the Minoru Centre for Active Living.

Today, Sept. 9, I was passing by the (old) Minoru Aquatic Centre and saw the cranes ripping off the roof.

Seniors can play cribbage, whist, euchre, bridge and poker here. Please call the centre for dates and times of all activities.

Its time was clearly up, but I still shed a wee tear.

Liberals win, ousting one-term Conservative MP By the numbers:

Steveston-Richmond East:

Parm Bains (Lib) 15,420

The Liberal’s Parm Bains has been declared the winner of Steveston-Richmond East by several media outlets, apparently beating one-term Tory MP Kenny Chiu.

Kenny Chiu (Con) 12,060

Although potentially thousands of mail-in ballots have still to be counted, it appears Bains, with a 3,360-vote lead, will be part of a Liberal minority government.

Swing:

Projections across Canada give the Liberals 158 seats, while the Conservatives appear to have won 119 seats. Bains said voters in his riding sent an “extremely clear” message that they want a representative “who will work for everyone and be inclusive of everyone.” “That’s who I am — that’s the message that came through, they want someone...who’s going to

The riding, although historically blue, was in Liberal hands before Chiu won in 2019.

Chiu said “he has my support, I pray that he & his family are protected & he’ll be able to represent us w/honor & integrity.”

On Tuesday, Chiu congratulated Bains on Twitter for his win in Ste-

while the Green’s Françoise Raunet got just 805 (2.2 per cent). What they said: Jack Trovato (NDP) said he was encouraged by Richmond moving in a more “progressive” direction , referring to the possibility of the city ousting its two Tory MPs. However, he added that “(The Liberals) talk a good game, they come up with all these wonderful promises, but invariably they don’t seem to follow through...” Francoise Raunet (Greens) said her party either needs to get people elected to office, or change their objectives as a party. The party needs to decide whether they want to be a “policy development incubator” or a party that elects candidates, she added. The PPC’s Jennifer Singh didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Mom-of-two feeling ‘defeated’ after apparent stalker sighting

one day be successful in entering her home.

Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond woman is living on a knife-edge once more, after an apparent sighting close to her home of an alleged stalker warned by the courts to steer clear of her. After Koszima Mair’s neighbour reported to police last week that he spotted Jesse Castillo on their street, she said she’s “feeling defeated” and that her “rights to protection” are not being considered. Since the spring of last year, single mom-of-two Mair has allegedly been plagued by Castillo, who has no connection to her but apparently turns up randomly at her No. 1 Road home multiple times, either staring into her windows or trying the front door. Castillo has been arrested and

Koszima Mair

appeared in court several times over the last year, but continues to be granted bail, with the condition of staying well away from Mair, her home and her family. Richmond RCMP told the Richmond News last Thursday that it is investigating the alleged “breach of recognizance,” but that “investigators are not quite at a stage where they can make an arrest.” In the meantime, Mair is back to the dark place she often finds herself in, wondering if and when Castillo will return and if he will

“I have been told by Crown and Victims Services not to let my guard down,” Mair told the News. “He gets no consequences and I have to live in this way. I’m also at a loss as to why he hasn’t been charged with criminal harassment? “What he is doing fits that charge (so) why won’t they? I’m so frustrated and living like this is exhausting.” The News reported in August how Castillo failed to appear in court for two previous breach of recognizance charges, despite being out on bail. He was arrested soon after but was, yet again, released on bail with the aforementioned conditions, which he has allegedly flouted several times.

Man, 64, in custody after shootings A 64-year-old Richmond man is in custody connected to last Monday’s double shooting incident near two schools. Richmond RCMP said the man is not connected to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict and that there is “no further threat” to public safety. However, police are keen to get their hands on any dashcam video as shooting investigation continues. Areas of interest are: 1) In the vicinity of No. 4 Road and Finn Road at approximately noon; 2) On Granville Avenue between No. 4 and No. 5 Road at approximately 10:30 a.m. and again at approximately 12:50 p.m. Anyone with dash-cam video of traffic in these locations dur-

ing these times on Sept. 13 is asked to call the Richmond RCMP non-emergency line at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2021-25173. The Richmond News reported earlier this week how Mounties were investigating the first incident at around noon near Dyke and No. 4 roads, close to the south arm of the Fraser River. However, while officers were at that scene, police received a report of a second shooting at 1:10 p.m. on Granville Avenue, near No. 4 Road, which is close to MacNeill secondary and Anderson elementary. About two hours later, a man believed to be connected to the shootings was taken into custody in Vancouver, with no injuries. —Alan Campbell/News

Permits expire on city centre project Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The building permits for the foundations and underground parking of the largescale Atmosphere project in City Centre have expired after six months of no activity. Construction on Atmosphere, slated to have more than 800 residential units as well as retail and office space on No. 3 Road at Alderbridge Way, appears to have ground to a halt.

Join Richmond’s Rethink Waste Think Tank We’re looking for great ideas about how we can reduce waste and support a circular economy, where the materials we use stay in circulation to be used, reused or repaired, and recycled multiple times into new products. The developer, South Street, will now have to reapply for these permits if it wants to continue construction. The site, across from Lansdowne Shopping Centre, is currently an empty lot with a large hole — it appears concrete walls have been built below ground on the perimeter of the site. The Richmond News heard from one Richmondite this summer who had bought a unit in pre-sales — spending $250,000 on a down payment — and was frustrated with the lack of information coming from the developer and the lack of activity at the building site.

Atmosphere is on No. 3 Road at Alderbridge Way. Maria Rantanen photo

“Every day, I drive my car past this construction site and it’s still a big hole there with no obvious construction activities,” Joshua Zhang told the News this summer. He said his realtor had been asking the developer about the status of the project, but they’d been met with silence. The development plan includes an office tower and six residential towers with 824 units of housing, of which 112 will be market rentals and 38 affordable rental units.

Who is enforcing the vaccine passport? vaccinated against COVID-19.

Alan Campbell

RCMP ready to respond, hoping not to be called

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Richmond RCMP said it fully expects to be “called upon to assist with enforcement under the Provincial Health Act, as can a number of other regulatory agencies, inspectors and law enforcement partners.”

The new vaccine “passports” have been in place for some businesses for more than a week now, but it’s still unclear who is going to enforce the public health order. Premier John Horgan said staff at venues or businesses could call police if patrons refuse to show their vaccine cards, but both business owners and the police union have expressed concerns. A so-called “enforcement team” of police, liquor inspectors and municipal bylaw officers are being touted by the government as the ones who will ensure the public health order (PHO) is being respected. Depending on the violation, fines can range between $230 and $575 for individuals and $2,300 for event organizers or owners/operators of the locations where the event is being held. The Richmond News reached out to the B.C. Ministry of Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Richmond RCMP and the City of Richmond to gauge their appetite and ability to enforce the new vaccine passport rule. Ministry of Health enforcement answers

Vancouver Coastal Health, when asked about enforcement of the vaccine card, passed all questions to the ministry. A spokesperson for the ministry told the News said that non-emergency contraven-

The ministry wouldn’t say if the “enforcement team” would be carrying out random checks or only when complaints are made. And it wasn’t able to answer what powers officers have to ask a customer in a restaurant, for example, to prove they have been

The RCMP then pointed to the BC Public Health Act, which “outlines a number of powers and authorities, and the PHO can request assistance of a peace officer to enforce an order or carry out an inspection.” It said it will continue to use a “measured approach when dealing with calls related to COVID-19 non-compliance. “Each call will be assessed on a caseby-case basis, and police response will be prioritized based on the risk to public safety, the seriousness of alleged offence and other ongoing demands.” Quite what that response looks like, when Mounties are out on the streets carrying out more pressing duties, remains to be seen. “We ask that people respect that business owners and managers are doing their best to make it through the pandemic, as are the rest of us,” continued the spokesperson for Richmond RCMP. “Ultimately, we are hopeful that enforcement will not be required and that voluntary compliance...will be the norm.” Bylaw inspections to be complaintbased As has been the case with previous PHOs

during the pandemic, the enforcement buck seems to stop with municipalities. The City of Richmond, for instance, told the News that, from a bylaws perspective, its strategy will be largely complaints-based as there are “numerous challenges associated with random checks of whether or not a business is complying with only admitting patrons with proof of vaccination,” according to spokesperson Clay Adams. “For example, officers would need to view the vaccine card for everyone in the location to confirm adherence, which is time consuming and likely unnecessary unless a complaint has been made.” Adams said bylaw officers “will definitely respond to complaints of businesses allegedly not complying and work to educate and inform them of their responsibilities and implications of non-adherence.” Adams pointed out that the city issues business licences and, for a business to keep that licence in good standing, it must comply with all municipal and provincial requirements. “One of those is adherence to proof of vaccination for some businesses. Should a business refuse or fail to follow the health order by not asking for proof of vaccination, that business could be considered in non-compliance and risk losing its licence to operate. “Anyone who observes a business failing to check for proof of vaccination if required should contact City Bylaws who will follow up.”

Bus shelter cameras are for ‘maintenance’ only: City

RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Sign up for our newsletter at richmond-news.com Cameras mounted in 10 Richmond bus shelters are only there to check for maintenance — and not to acquire people’s images or personal data, according

to the City of Richmond. The “digital bus shelters” were installed in 2018 as part of a two-year pilot project, and a report on the program, along with recommendations on whether to continue it, will be “prepared for council in the coming weeks,” said City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams. The cameras came to light after Glacier Media reported that cameras in Vancouver transit-stop advertising displays are no longer covered up as was promised, and more such displays are being installed. Privacy concerns are, once again, being raised

The 10 digital transit displays in Richmond were installed through an agreement with Pattison Outdoor, said Adams. “Those shelters have a camera at one end that is only used briefly at 4 a.m.,” he said. “It is also activated at that time as it is highly unlikely anyone will be in the shelter. The city does not capture or mine the images in any way.” “When activated at 4 a.m., they take a screen shot of the shelter to determine if maintenance is needed and to verify the displays of the digital ads on the screen.” Adams said the shelters

with regard to what the Vancouver cameras are being used for. However, the companies involved maintain the Vancouver cameras cannot be used to watch people or gather information about them. The cameras in the Richmond shelters are different from the Vancouver ones, in that they are mounted facing the digital display ads — apparently to check for maintenance — as opposed to on the frame of the display ad.

also “bring an environmental benefit of a reduced carbon footprint due to less vehicle use, as well as fewer ink, paper and other print-related products.” The Richmond News reached out to Pattison Outdoor for more information about the cameras and what they are used for, including whether they could collect personal data, but did not hear back by the time of publication. King’s Auto Group Strives to Make a Significant Impact on Health Care in Richmond From left to right: Patrick Lee, co-owner of King’s Auto Group; Natalie Meixner, President and CEO, Richmond Hospital Foundation.

orn and raised in Richmond, Patrick Lee, co-owner of King’s Auto Group, has witnessed the city’s remarkable growth and transformation. “Richmond has grown and diversified tremendously as a community in the past five decades. Everything around the hospital has changed, yet Richmond Hospital, the sole hospital serving the entire municipality of Richmond, has not,” says Patrick. “The population in Richmond has far outgrown the hospital itself and despite this, our health care teams continue to provide high-quality care.” Although the business plan to expand Richmond Hospital has been approved by the B.C. Government, Patrick stresses that continuous support from the community is key to equipping our health care teams with facilities and tools that match their drive for providing the best in care close to home. Realizing the tremendous task at hand, King’s Auto Group hosted “A Night for Richmond” dinner gala in 2019 where over 200 friends and families attended and together raised $70,000 for Richmond Hospital Foundation. Health care is a

universal need that affects everyone and can be overwhelming for those who are uncertain of how to make a difference. By hosting a fundraising dinner, King’s Auto Group provides the opportunity for individuals to contribute within their own means while collectively creating a lasting impact. Aside from fundraising and bringing more awareness to Richmond Hospital Foundation and their mission, the focus of the dinner is also to bring family, friends and neighbours together. “Togetherness is what has brought us the success we experience today in our business,” says Patrick. “And to make a meaningful change in our community, especially in a cause as important as health care, we need to make a conscious effort to work together.” Community involvement and philanthropic giving helps Richmond Hospital Foundation fund innovative technologies and state-of-the-art equipment which enables better accessibility and a more robust health care system for generations to come.

How can you and your company get involved in improving health care in the community? To take an active leadership role to support Richmond Hospital, please contact Richmond Hospital Foundation for more information on philanthropic giving and sponsorship opportunities.

For the month of September, King’s Auto Group is matching every dollar donated to Richmond Hospital Foundation’s Mental Health campaign to a maximum of $10,000. Join King’s Auto Group in transforming and ensuring the best mental health care possible for the community of Richmond by scanning the QR code below and donating today.

“The more we support each other, the better our community strengthens and thrives,” says Patrick. “It’s time to come together and help build a better and healthier future for Richmond.”

Love of dancing key to reaching 100: Son Saskatchewan in Saskatoon thanks to his service, where he earned a commerce degree.

Kirsten Clarke KCLARKE@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

He then got a job with National Revenue Canada and moved out to Vancouver with his late wife, Vi (short for Violet), whom he had married in 1942 when they were both 21.

The key to reaching 100 may have been Steveston resident Doug Milton’s love of dancing. That, at least, is according to his son Keith Milton, 70, who was reflecting on his dad’s life ahead of Doug’s centennial. And on Sept. 5, Doug’s birthday, family members spanning four generations gathered at Keith’s South Surrey home to celebrate the milestone — some of whom Doug hadn’t seen in some time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’ve had people ask me, ‘what’s his secret to living this long?’” said Keith. “And you know, yeah, he went through the Depression, he was very frugal, he worked hard, but I think the key to his longevity and ability to stay mobile was (he and my mom) danced. They danced so much.” There was also another birthday party planned for Sept. 7 at the Maple Residences, an independent living centre in

In the 1960s, Doug and Vi took up dancing, said Keith. At least five nights a week, the pair would dance “every kind of dance you could imagine,” he said, and would travel to the Okanagan for a square dance festival.

for his efforts in a big Halifax bomber. He was primarily a navigator,” said Keith. “He got quite a few recognitions, but the most important one to him, as far as just the hierarchy of medals and awards, is the Distinguished Flying Cross.”

Doug, who was born in 1921, made his way west from his native Regina, Sask., after the Second World War, during which he served with the RCAF, flying 43 missions over Germany around 1942-43.

After Doug came home from the war, he was able to attend the University of

“He got the Distinguished Flying Cross

And while Doug now uses a walker, he still dances when he has the chance, Keith added. “I just marvel at the various things that he’s gone through...” Keith said. “You know, the things that he’s seen and done and the various different things that have been brought into common utilization... You just marvel at the things, in the 100 years that he’s lived, the things that have been innovative and brand new.”

Garden theft disappoints Richmond school, community garden schoolers who have spent a lot of time running the garden.

A Richmond elementary school is having to replace many of their essential gardening tools after a thief broke into their shed.

“It’s very disappointing because they spend all this time with excitement and anticipation and found their hard work gone.”

Anderson elementary’s outdoor learning staff discovered the school’s outdoor learning shed had been broken into in August.

Signs have been put up telling people not to pick produce from community gardens. Submitted photo

Hoses, shovels, trowels and gloves were some of the tools taken. “Our school community was sad to learn that these items were taken from our locked storage shed over the summer and these items will need to be replaced,” said the Anderson outdoor learning team in an email statement. The garden and learning shed play an “integral part” of the outdoor learning program at Anderson, explained the team in charge of the program. Many subjects at the school can be taught outside, such

as science and math, and the school believes “nature provides unlimited inspiration for creative expression.” Meanwhile, produce at the schoolyard garden at Terra Nova Rural Park was also picked by another thief during the summer. Since then, signs have been put up and the garden hasn’t seen any hungry thieves picking produce from the garden. Lai told the Richmond News garden theft has always been a challenge for people who grow food in community gardens. A common misconception, he said, is people believe the term “community gardens” means anyone can take food from them. “Community gardens mean people need to rent a plot for them to grow their food and it’s theirs to pick, but if people didn’t rent the plot, they can look at it, smell it, but don’t pick them,” said Lai. IN MEMORIAM

Rajamma ajamma “Chinnu” Naidu aj Naiidu

We remember the one-year anniversary of the passing of our mother, sister and friend, Rajamma “Chinnu” Naidu, on September 28, 2020 in Richmond, BC. Raj will be forever immortalized by her smiling face, beautiful spirit, words of wisdom, limitless generosity and selflessness in making the world a better place. Raj was loved by a lot and inspired by a lot. She lived her life according to her own rules and left on her own terms. Raj was a fierce woman. She lived through sacrifice, experience, adventure and taking risks. Raj, being a teacher, was passionate about education – both in the classroom and in the real world. She began her teaching career in the Fiji Islands in 1972 and then upon migrating to Canada, taught in Prince Rupert before moving to Richmond where she taught with the Richmond School District for 23 years. Raj is survived by her daughters - Wasanthi & Aarthi, her sons-in-law Deyoung & Anthony, her grandchildren - Choya, Sejal, Tayen & Zayvian, her great-grandson - Keyon, and her siblings in Fiji, Australia and Canada. May you rest in eternal peace, love and light - until we meet again, you’ll always be in our thoughts and forever in our hearts. Murugan Shakti. Murugan Thonai.

Each Loss CAMPBELL, Shirley Ann (Rulton)

GOUNDREY, Mark R. May 26, 1971 − September 14, 2021

Shirley was born on September 24th, 1936, at her family home in London, Ontario, and passed away on September 17th, 2021, at Minoru Residence in Richmond, BC.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of Mark in the early hours on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, after a 7−year long battle with FTD− a rare form of Dementia.

Shirley is predeceased by her father George, her mother Elizabeth Jean (Irish), brother Allan and grandson Sean.

Mark was born at Richmond General Hospital on May 26, 1971, and resided in Steveston for many years before moving to Ladner. He attended Lord Byng Elementary, Hugh Boyd and Steveston Secondary Schools and loved the game of lacrosse. He began playing with the Richmond Lacrosse Association in his early years, and later played with the Ladner Pioneers Senior "B" team where he was so proud of being a part of winning the Presidents’ Cup in 1998.

Shirley leaves behind her loving husband Alan, sister Nancy, daughter Kelly (Peter) Pokorny, grandson Chris and his three daughters, Aubree, Laney and Karessa. She also leaves behind her son Craig (Melissa) Campbell and their two sons, Nathan and Dylan and granddog Teeko. Memories are like threads of gold; they never tarnish and never grow old. May Shirley’s soul Rest in Peace. Memories and condolences can be sent to www.arbormemorial.ca/valleyview Valley View Funeral Home 604-596-8866

NORTON, David Geoffrey April 24, 1934 − September 16, 2021 With deep sorrow, the family of David Geoffrey Norton announces his passing on September 16, 2021, following a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Maureen; son, Andrew (Cindy); daughter, Julie (Greg); and grandchildren, Trevor, Tyler, Jessica, and Jason. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England in 1934, Geoff apprenticed as a coachbuilder. Geoff married Maureen Kelly in 1957 and emigrated to Canada in 1965. He was a Master Carpenter by trade, and quickly obtained employment with Burrard Dry Dock and Star Shipyards before finishing his career with UBC.

July 8, 1983 - September 28, 2020 He struggled d with substance use disorder. Sadly missed but never forgotten. Yo our family and friends

Good times we had together, The moments that we shared We didn’t have to tell each other How much we really cared. I never dreamed you’d go away, Never thought of sorrow. So sure you’d always be here Took for granted each tomorrow. Now my life is all confused Since you went away. You took a part of me And for help I daily pray. But when God sent you to me He never said that you were mine, That I could keep you always – Only borrowed for a time. Now, He’s called you home, I’m sad and I shed tears. Yet I’m glad He loaned you to me And we had these many years.

All those who knew Mark will miss his constant smile and sense of humour but are comforted by the thought that he is now in a better place where he can eat his favourite hot wings, washed down with a cold Kokanee. He loved to share his steak and eggs with the boys on Sundays at the Sundance, also washed down with a cold beer.

“GONE TOO SOON”

Randall Matthias Burke

Mark is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Jodi; children, Taylor and Maddie, who brought him so much pride; his parents, Phil and Gloria; elder brother, Darren (Andhra); younger brother, Kyle (Teresa); Jodi’s parents, Darlene and Klaus Schneider; brother−in−law, Cory (Hazel); and sisters−in−law, Suzanne (Peter), Monica (Jason), and Christina (Fab). He had numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a multitude of great friends including those at Shaw Communications where he was last employed, and also within both the Ladner and Richmond lacrosse communities.

Each loss is very different, The pain is so severe. Will I ever stop missing This one I loved so dear?

Geoff was a dedicated family man who enjoyed RV −ing and golfing. He was 87 at the time of his death. Geoff will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

May the Sunshine of Comfort Dispel the Clouds of despair

It is hard to find the words to express the gratitude felt by the family for the amazing care given to Mark for the past five and a half years by the staff and caregivers at Delta View Campus of Care (or as Mark called it "the homestead"), except to say that they truly are angels in disguise. The kindness they showed towards Mark and his family will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the B. C. Alzheimer’s Association with the hope that the funds can be used to research the cause of FTD, which will hopefully lead to either a cure or treatment of this insidious disease. A celebration of Mark’s life will take place on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 3 PM, at the South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56th Street, Tsawwassen.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

Celebrate the lives of loved ones with your stories, photographs and tributes

PODZUN, Hans Ulrich April 11, 1954 – August 24, 2021 Our beloved Hans passed away at 6:00 a.m. on August 24th in the presence of his loving wife Colleen after a brave, year long battle with cancer. In his final weeks at home, Hans was cared for 24/7 and was surrounded daily by many loved ones. Hans’ children relentlessly shadowed Colleen in seeing to his needs and spent many hours comforting their father. Hans was often kept company by his loving brother and sisters-in-law. “Auntie” Kathy came almost every day. Close family friends, Guy and Robyn and Dave and Andrea lent unconditional support and love during these days. A special mention to Dr. Guy Eriksen, who pulled out all the stops during this time and was a beacon of light to Hans. Predeceased by his parents, Ollie and Inga Podzun, Hans is survived by loving wife Colleen, sons Brody (Dana) and Conor, daughters Bailey (Graham) and Brogan, and his brother Fred. Also very dear to Hans was his granddaughter Avery and many nieces and nephews. Hans was born in Princeton on April 11, 1954 after which the family moved almost immediately to Revelstoke. It was here that Hans began his lifelong habit of establishing lasting friendships. After several years of successful careers in real estate and marketing positions, Hans obtained his certification as a Notary Public and proceeded to build a practice that spanned over 25 years and would include a clientele of lifelong friends and many news ones. Every August, the large extended family and friends would head up to Mabel Lake and Hans would spend countless hours hauling young and old around on his boat “Mabel”, often accompanied by an oldies soundtrack dominated by Bobby Darren or “Danger Zone” from Top Gun. His best friend Dave was the only one trusted enough to share these duties. Hans’s passions were many and included secretly creating paintings for Colleen, tending to huge flower pots hung front and back of the house, year round bird feeders including a special one for hummingbirds, and spending time with his children, granddaughter, and extended family. Hours spent puttering around the garage or enjoying time on the deck while listening to a large variety of music on a vintage Hi-Fi console found Hans at his happiest. In their formative years Brody and Bailey would be treated to visits from Santa Claus each Christmas, a practice later repeated for Conor and Brogan and all the cousins. Hans stayed totally in character and even adults were in awe of Santa. Hans was an extraordinary, beautiful and much loved man. A Celebration of Hans’s life will be held at a later date.
