Where’s the Reach program ‘research’? connected kids Dear Editor,

Re: “Microaggressions lead to health issues: Doctor,” Mental Wellness, Feb. 24 If I start chatting with someone, say at the lab, in a coffee shop, a salon, I usually ask “Where did you grow up?” This leads to discussion about different cultures, their family, was it difficult to settle here. I usually throw in “We came from England – everyone is from somewhere!” After all, Canada is a cultural mosaic. I find that people like to talk about themselves and we have an enjoyable discussion. Now,

according

to

UBC researcher, I have been using “microaggression”, which tends to cause “serious health problems, sleep problems as well as high levels of inflammation.” What?

As “researchers” tend to do, I believe this one has formed a theory and then set out to prove it. However there is no proof in this article. No immigrants are quoted as having this problem of “microaggression,” making them “feel as though they are a perpetual foreigner, that they don’t belong.” Not one. Where was the “research” done?

RICHMOND

Dear Editor,

I am a long-time resident of Richmond and for the past 25 years I have worked as a youth worker in the alternate school system in Richmond. I’ve had the great pleasure over my career of working with the old Roving Leaders program which transformed into the REACH program. Both of these programs provided outreach to vulnerable youth in the community. I am saddened to see the end to this program. Our school PE program depended heavily on the connection with the outreach workers. Their ability to connect with our kids in a non-threatening way and being able to introduce them to commu-

nity activities in a comfortable small setting was invaluable. They were a valuable conduit for our disenfranchised youth. The workers were able to build connections with kids who often struggle to get out into the community because of financial or emotional limitations. The City of Richmond talks a lot about building assets and strives to be “the best place in North America to raise children and youth” but unless you put bodies into jobs it’s just lip service. The hole that the dismantling of this program has left is real. Kids are going without now because of the stroke of a pen at City hall.

Thanks for speaking up Dear Editor, Thank you to the City of Richmond. Welcome all refugees Dear Editor, Canada opens its doors to Ukranian refugees with no limits or conditions. This is an admirable stand, however the same does not apply to Afghani or Syrian refugees. Underlying racism exists, even in Canadian government policies. I would love to hear Justin Trudeau’s explanation.

Friends come to the rescue

Putin should be tried at Hague Dear Editor,

Fact check:

I stand with individuals who want peace in both the Russian and Ukrainian community, let us remind ourselves that in these two communities there is a loved one somewhere in Ukraine or Russia and this war affects everyone regardless of political, ethnic or economic background. After reading the online services from the various mainstream media, I made the conscious effort to reach out to the Ukrainian Community of Ivan Franko via email expressing my support of the Ukrainian community against the barbarism of Russian aggression, emanating from President Vladimir Putin who claims his goal is to protect people subjected to bullying and genocide and that he aims for the “demilitarization and de-Nazification” of Ukraine. According to the Associated Press, Putin has frequently accused Ukraine of being taken over by extremists, ever since its pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, was ousted in 2014 after months of protests against his rule.

Following the “Euromaiden” protests that led to the subsequent removal of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Feb. 22, 2014, and amidst the proRussian unrest in Ukraine, Russian soldiers without insignias took control of strategic positions and infrastructure within the Ukrainian territory of Crimea. On March 1, 2014, the Federation Council of the Russian Federation unanimously adopted a resolution to petition Putin to use military force in Ukraine. Economic sanctions only hurt the ordinary people of Russia. My opinion is for a different approach: 1) Send military aid to Ukraine, with no troops on the ground. 2) Mount international pressure to indict and convict President Putin as a war criminal at The Hague Tribunal, for invading and attacking a sovereign nation.

Dear Editor,

their lives.

They say that no one really knows what goes on behind closed doors. A case in point was the drama that unfolded after a Nov. 15, 2021, flood devastated Rotary Hospice House on No. 4 Road, the home away from home, for our Richmond palliative care residents. The water rose up and the residents and our nursing staff were evacuated. Where they would go was uppermost in our minds until we were offered the top floor of the new Fraserview Retirement Community on Williams Road. Fraserview wholeheartedly welcomed our staff and palliative residents, and everyone was transferred and moved on the same day. Yes, it was not ideal, but it was a stopgap measure and supported us in the hospice palliative care work so critical for people at the end of

pandemic.

We would just like to take this opportunity to say a very great “thank you” to their manager Sylvia and her valiant staff who opened their home to us and helped us work without surprises and free from roadblocks that could have so easily had us going sideways, especially during the

We are back in our remediated facility and continue to provide the City of Richmond with the very best hospice palliative care. Our terrific staff, led by our outstanding director of care, Jane, and supported by our diligent and caring executive director, Elizabeth, have had an experience like no other and all of them rose to the occasion, but you can bet that all of them are very glad to be back.

Rally for Ukraine in Richmond, fundraising concert coming

A large crowd rallied in Richmond Saturday afternoon in support of Ukraine, following Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country.

Brodie. “This an international and important global situation, and we cannot set a precedent, any kind of a precedent, by just allowing the situation to deteriorate even further than it has.”

At least 200 demonstrators, many bearing flags and blue and yellow signs — the colours of the Ukrainian flag — of support, filled the plaza outside Richmond City Hall on No. 3 Road, chanting “glory to Ukraine” and “God save Ukraine.” Eugene Lupynis, who is on the board of the Richmond-based Ukrainian Society for Ivan Franko, told the crowd that Ukraine isn’t fighting for itself, it is fighting for the world. “The world continues to see the Ukrainian people being strong,” he said. Lupynis said images from Saturday’s rally would come back to the people in Ukraine, and he called for continued support for the country. The rally began with speeches outside city hall at 1 p.m., beneath the Ukrainian flag hoisted by the city earlier in the week, before demonstrators marched to the Minoru Centre for Active Living.

Au, who co-organized the rally, told the Richmond News earlier this week that the idea of holding the event was triggered by community members who were eager to show their support for Ukrainians. A rally was held Saturday at Richmond City Hall. Representatives from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Eastern Catholic Church were among those who spoke at the rally, along with Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, city coun. Chak Au, Liberal MPs Wilson Miao (Richmond Centre) and Parm Bains (Steveston-Richmond East) and BC NDP MLA Henry Yao. “We must, as a community, say that we will support the people of Ukraine...they are resolute, they are strong, they are courageous, but they need our support,” said

“Our country is founded upon principles such as democracy and freedom and it has the second-largest Ukrainian population outside Ukraine,” he said at the time. “Therefore, we cannot stand by and watch Ukrainian people there.” Meanwhile, A Richmond company has launched a GoFundMe to help their colleagues in Ukraine get to safety. For the past several years, Richmondbased ArmSoar Solutions has worked with the team in Ukraine to produce some of the company’s model planes and gliders, cofounder and general manager Thomas Lee told the Richmond News. He added that the glider community is

“very, very close,” and around 70 per cent of high-performance RC gliders are made in Ukraine. “There’s probably only a couple thousand of us around the world…so we have friends all around the world. I think something like this has really shocked the world quite a bit, especially in our community where a lot of these planes are made in Ukraine.” The funds, Lee said, are being sent on an as-needed basis to help team members get out of Ukraine. As well, Richmond’s Ukrainian community has teamed up with a symphony orchestra to host a concert in aid of stricken people in their homeland. The aforementioned Society of Ivan Franko is working with Vancouver’s nonprofit Symphony 21 to put on the benefit event on Friday, March 11. All proceeds from the concert — being held at St. Andrew’s Wesley United Church in Vancouver — will go to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal. —Nono Shen,Kirsten Clarke/News

Random stalker forcing victim to leave city left the area by the time police arrived a few minutes later.

She said officers picked him up shortly afterwards in central Richmond. He was taken into custody and will appear in court later this month.

ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Last week, while out walking her dog, was the last straw for Koszima Mair.

For 14 months up until last summer, Castillo would randomly turn up at her door, try the handle and stare into her front window.

But the last 22 months have taken their toll on Mair, who says she has no choice now but to leave the city she loves.

For almost two years, she has been reduced, for the most part, to living in fear of a random stalker who, despite being jailed and ordered to steer clear, keeps coming back to haunt her.

On one occasion, he was spotted in her garden, staring into her home while apparently sharpening two pieces of a broken concrete bird bath.

“I’ve had enough. I’m going to have to leave Richmond…I kind of have to. He clearly frequents Richmond so I can’t be here and he clearly pays little attention to the court,” Mair told the Richmond News.

According to Mair, the man, Jesse Castillo — who she’s never exchanged a conversation with — appeared across the street from her home around noon yesterday, despite a court order last October banning him from most of west Richmond, where she lives.

“I like Richmond, so it’s going to be hard; but I’m not sure what else I can do. I just need him to be kept away in the meantime. “I still don’t know what his intentions are. He’s very menacing and he’s tried to get into my home before so, who knows.

She had been walking her dog last Wednesday and was returning home, when she claimed she spotted him staring at her from a few yards away.

“I knew it would just be a matter of time before he returned.”

Mair said she made sure Castillo — who has tried entering her home in the past and has stood outside her window staring in — saw her calling 9-1-1, adding that he had

Mair conceded that Castillo “clearly pays little attention to rules; any judge can see this will never change.

He has been arrested several times over the 22 months and appeared in court on multiple occasions. Koszima Mair said she can’t take the worry any more. “I’m really, really hoping he gets some time in jail, just so I know where he is.” The News reported last October how the single mom-of-two was feeling “a little better” after pleading with the courts to protect her from a stranger who stalked her since May 2020.

In her victim impact statement last fall, Mair detailed how she and her teenage kids feel like prisoners in their own home when Castillo is not in custody. She explained how she had to install multiple security cameras around her home, how she can’t go for a run in her own neighbourhood without constantly looking over her shoulder and how she fears for the safety of her children every time she’s not around.

Mounties in Richmond are investigating after a 13-year-old girl was approached by a “suspicious man” who offered her a ride and money. According to RCMP, the Richmond girl was walking in the 3700-block of Broadway Street, near Second Avenue and the Steveston United Church, around 5 p.m. on Wednesday (March 3) when she was allegedly approached by the man, who was driving a dark-coloured vehicle. “It is alleged that this man appeared friendly and offered her a ride, which was refused. Mounties nab 23 drivers Richmond Mounties and police volunteers have been out in force over the last week or so, driving home the message about not being distracted behind the wheel. On Tuesday, the team camped out at No. 3 Road and Westminster Highway, where they pulled over eight vehicles out of the 12 where drivers were spotted using their phones. “The vast majority of drivers observed today were following the law and ‘leaving their phone alone,’” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Adriana O’Malley. “Out of the 419 vehicles that passed, only 12 drivers were observed using their cell phones. Unfortunately, four vehicles were not able to be stopped. This is the third targeted operation conducted since the beginning of this month’s campaign. During last week’s operations, between 600 and 800 vehicles passed through the targeted areas. Out of those, 10 drivers were issued written warnings, four were issued tickets and one prohibited driver was stopped. Bullying claim at Nova House Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A Richmond transition house for women fleeing abuse was itself the site of bullying and harassment for one person who worked there, according to a WorkSafeBC claim. The employee has been on leave since the summer. Nova House, which is run by Chimo Community Services, has been at the centre of a WorkSafeBC claim for harassment and bullying that was approved last year. According to WorkSafeBC, a worker is bullied or harassed when “someone takes an action that he

or she knew or reasonably ought to have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated.” Examples of bullying and harassment are “verbal aggression or insults, calling someone derogatory names, harmful hazing or initiation practices, vandalizing personal belongings, and spreading malicious rumours,” WorkSafeBC goes on to explain on its website. Board president Joyce Alisharan told the Richmond News she couldn’t speak to the details of any claim, even if she knew them, due to privacy and other legal concerns. Further questions regarding the board’s procedures to address WorkSafeBC claims in general were not answered by press time.

The News also asked how an incident of harassment and bullying may impact Chimo as an organization, given it deals with vulnerable women often leaving situations where they have been harassed and bullied to the extreme. Transition houses are set up for women and their children who are fleeing domestic abuse. Chimo Community Services receives funding from the federal and provincial governments including BC Housing. Richmond city council recently approved a $50,000 grant for Chimo. The organization also received more than $200,000 from various charitable organizations this year.

Two years of no new seismic projects Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The Richmond School District hasn’t had any new seismic projects approved in the last two years. But the board of education chair, Sandra Nixon, said she’s “hopeful” some will be approved in the next round, with a response from the Ministry of Education expected in the next few weeks. Nixon said there was no explanation from the ministry why no projects were approved over the past two years. The school district submits a capital plan every year which shows its priorities, and the Ministry of Education provides the funding for both major

and minor capital projects.

during seismic upgrades.

The school district can add “extras” to the project with its own funds.

“I’m not personally convinced that it’s an either/or question — the board has other assets and other strategies,” she said, adding the board could get some grants to help cover the ventilation upgrades.

The Richmond School District currently has $26 million in unrestricted capital funds. However, a recent recommendation from district staff suggested the board spend $12 million on improving ventilation for 17 elementary schools that currently don’t have mechanical ventilation. Trustee Donna Sargent raised concerns at February’s school board meeting that if that much were spent on ventilation, it would take away from other projects, like those done in conjunction with seismic projects. Nixon said she didn’t think the school district would have to choose between ventilation and “extras”

Nixon referenced some properties that the school district owns but doesn’t need, and, while they’re not currently considered surplus properties, they could be “leveraged.” The school district has a seismic project office, with staff partially paid for by the province. Currently there are five seismic projects underway in Richmond schools. The priority seismic projects for 2022 are DeBeck elementary, Dixon elementary, Diefenbaker elementary and McNair secondary.

A tenant was was evicted from Lexington Square.

Renter evicted for abusive, lewd behaviour Alan Campbell ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A tenant in a rental suite in Richmond’s city centre was ordered to vacate the apartment by a government authority after racking up a catalogue of violations. According to a decision published last week by the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB), a tenant in Lexington Square on Lansdowne Road was rude and abusive towards the building’s handyman and made drunken and lewd comments to the female caretaker. Another tenant in the building reported the man for abusive behaviour, bullying and frequently smoking, which violated the building’s rules. The RTB decision states the landlord applied to repossess the unit last June following the aforementioned incidents with the handyman and the caretaker in the spring of last year. It also told how the handyman didn’t want to enter the unit because he “felt unsafe” around the tenant and would quit his job if forced to carry out repairs in it. Following the report from the caretaker, the tenant was warned in writing about his behaviour in May of last year. That was before the fellow tenant reported him the next month. In his application to the RTB, the landlord requested repossession of the unit by Jan. 31, 2022. While the tenant claimed that he had not disputed the request, as he was going through an emotional time due to bereavement and, due to his poor English, he didn’t realize there was a time limit to dispute. He further argued that he only smokes e-cigarettes and the other instances of “smoking” were likely down to him burning incense. In its ruling, the RTB stated that the landlord followed the rules set out in the Residential Tenancy Act and granted him possession of the unit, as of Jan. 31, 2022.

Anonymous love letter inspires priest from Ukrainian church

When Ukrainian Catholic priest Richard Soo arrived at his church on Railway

Avenue last Friday night, he noticed something odd. Wedged in between the

heavy front doors of Richmond’s Ukrainian Eastern Catholic Church was a

scrap of paper. He pulled it out and unfolded it, and when he did the world

suddenly felt like a lighter place.

“I was so touched, so inspired and so moved,” said Soo. On that piece of paper, that appeared to be torn from a notebook, was a simple message — a handdrawn heart. “Our church is deeply horrified about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But in the darkness, sometimes light and love shine through. Thank you so much for this little gesture, which meant more to us than you could possibly know.” Soo said it’s incredible to know that while the Ukraine people desperately fight for their lives, people here are standing with them. Soo was in Kyiv, Ukraine, just two short years ago, a time when the country seemed rich with potential. “When I was there, it was

very moving for me to see that Ukraine is a country where you can protest and you can criticize the government,” said Soo.

“The only reason why Ukraine is being attacked is that Ukraine is becoming more like Canada, with democracy and the rule of law. Putin can’t afford to have a big country with a shared history to be free and democratic.” Meanwhile, Soo said there are many ways to support Ukraine. For example, people could inform themselves or lobby the local government to provide further support for the Ukrainian government and people there, explained Soo. He added that people can also consider donating to the Canadian Red Cross and other related organizations. —Nono Shen/News

The United Beanies for Peace at Steveston’s SOS Children’s Village thrift store.

Steveston store displays peace bears Always looking to be just a little more than a thrift store, SOS Children’s Village in Steveston has pushed the boat out again with its window display. This time the charity has decorated its storefront in a theme of world peace, with a special focus on the crisis in Ukraine right now. And it is using beanie bears to spread the word. As well as having “United Beanies for Peace,”

as store manager Yasmin Tang is calling them, the display includes a globe, the peace sign and plenty of blue and yellow in honour of besieged Ukraine. “We did climate change awareness during Christmas time, now we got a lovely donation of beanie bears, so we created the theme ‘United beanies for Peace’ to express another strong message to stop the war,” Tang told the Richmond News. —Alan Campbell/

Neon lights, bouncy castle help night market bounce back Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

A full-scale market, a mass of neon lights and one of the biggest bouncy castles ever seen in B.C. are all set to help the Richmond Night Market’s bounce back from the pandemic. 2022: Summer Magic Rainbow is the night market’s theme this year, explained its owner Raymond Cheung. Like a rainbow that follows a storm, brighter days are ahead for the market, given the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, he added. But while Cheung is looking forward, he’s also looking back. The neon lights are meant to take visitors back in time to Hong Kong circa 1950s when neon exploded in the city and became an iconic representation of Hong

Kong’s nightlife. Visitors can sample delicious Asian street food while enjoying the authentic ambiance of a large Asian city at night, Cheung told the Richmond News.

trucks joining the event. Everything from seafood combos to Asian-inspired

barbecue chicken will be on offer.

The night market will officially kick off on April 29 and last until Oct. 10.

“Neon lights have been widely used as an advertising method in Hong Kong. Those signs became even more popular in the latter half of the 20th century with the city’s economization. (In Richmond), every corner of the night market will be basking in neon lights,” said Cheung. Also speaking of bouncing back, this year, visitors will be greeted with a 30foot tall and 50-foot wide inflatable bouncy castle — one of the biggest ever seen in B.C., said Cheung. “It’s custom-made and we hope to ensure that adults as well as children can have fun in it.” Meanwhile, the market it-

Ex-pat Caribbeans ‘fatigue,’ reminisce Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

The laughter tells you they’re friends, but the jabs may have you believe otherwise. A group of a dozen Caribbeanborn men sitting around a table at Richmond Centre’s food court tease each other about all things personal — their looks, their lifestyles — in what’s called “fatiguing” or “mamaguying” in the Caribbean. And if these men don’t fatigue or mamaguy each other, something is definitely wrong. “For us, putdown is a sign of love among ourselves...” said Trinidad-born Ken Wong-Moon. “See, the more I put him down, the more I like him and the more he feels loved in our culture.” It’s something polite Canadians might not understand, especially in today’s “politically correct” atmosphere, the Caribbeans explained to the Richmond News. The Caribbean men, meeting weekly in Richmond, find common ground in music, sports — especially cricket — stories and “lots of B.S.” While Richmond — and Canada — are known for drawing people from around the world, it seems it might have a rival in Ca-

tar and become a musician, but he also studied sciences. This led to a teaching job at Cambie secondary where he taught science and guitar for 34 years.

ribbean countries.

The informal gathering is a microcosm of the world — these largely retired professionals’ families came to the Caribbean from Africa, the Middle East, India, China – even Scotland.

In the meantime, his older brother, who had come to the Lower Mainland about a decade earlier, had started a steel band called The Moonlighters. The band played at different festivals, and one of their regular hangouts was the Cosmos Club in North Vancouver.

While Canada draws immigrants from around the world to find a better life, the Caribbean has a less auspicious immigration history. In the 1800s, Indians were enticed to the Caribbean as indentured servants, “to fill in where slavery had failed,” explained Bob Hosein, whose family originated from West Bengal. Hosein’s grandparents and parents worked in sugar plantations, but by the time he was born, indentured servitude had become “an embarrassment” to the British Empire, Hosein explained. For this group, by the time they were reaching adulthood, their parents were pushing them to go abroad to get educated, with the hope they’d come back and have better jobs. Hosein left to go abroad in his early 20s. After working and studying in England for half a dozen years, he came to the Lower Mainland in 1974 and “looked around and stayed,” working as a psychiatric nurse for 42 years. Tensions in U.S. In full mamaguy style, Lefroy

Steel bands were a big part of ex-pat Caribbean life. Former members of The Moonlighters, Azaad Ali, Ken and Wilkie Moon-Wong, Aga Khan and Mike Layne, often meet on Fridays to reminisce. Maria Rantanen photo Virgil said he likes to come meet with his fellow ex-pat Caribbeans because “I sort of enjoy hearing people telling lies.” Virgil arrived in Vancouver via Philadelphia, having grown up in Bermuda. He studied medicine at Lincoln University and graduated third in his class in 1968. Despite his high academic standing, however, he couldn’t get a residency anywhere in the U.S. But Vancouver General Hospital, accepted him immediately. He set out from Philadelphia driving towards Vancouver. Racial tensions were high across the United States, and he had to sleep in his car along the way, ex-

cept one night when he was able to secure a motel room. “Things were pretty tough then,” Virgil said. The Wong-Moon brothers, Ken and Wilkie, were both sent abroad from Trinidad to study. Their mother had come from China to the Caribbean through an arranged marriage — she was an only child, who was highly educated and spoke seven Chinese dialects. When it came time for her adult children to get educated, they were “shipped off.” The Caribbean sound When he arrived at UBC, Ken Wong-Moon wanted to study gui-

Rivalling the Moonlighters was another Caribbean steel band, the Sunset Cavaliers, which Virgil joined in 1968 and which played at the PNE, the Calgary Stampede and various music festivals. The weekly informal gathering allows the friends to socialize in the context of a “common life experience from when we were young,” explained Aga Khan. The Caribbean ex-pats live partly in the past — in those shared memories from their childhood — but they’ve got their eye on current events and what’s happening in their community. But eventually, the conversation seems to steer back to the Caribbean experience, be it as friends back home or friends in their newfound home. Search Caribbeans for full story at RichmondNews.com

McMath senior girls make basketball history at the BCs The team headed into the semifinals against Burnaby Central with a score of 80-64, which allowed McMath’s team to earn a spot in the AAA championship finals against MEI.

VLEUNG@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM

Wildcats’ MVP Marina Radocaj scored seven of her 20 points in the final period of the game leading the team to victory.

As the final buzzer sounded, fans rushed to the floor and emotions filled the court as Richmond’s McMath senior girls basketball team took home the school’s first provincial championship title in history on Saturday.

The Grade 11 student also had three steals, three assists and a pair of blocked shots which named her Player of the Game.

The Wildcats defeated MEI Eagles 51-46 at the B.C. School Sports 3A Girls Basketball Provincials, which was held at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday evening. Jamie Kippan, who coaches the team along with Zoran Radocaj and Anne Grillrie-Carre, said the win “is a pretty big deal” for the school. “The team was obviously ecstatic,” said Kippan, adding that every player played a huge part in the success despite the team not being very big. “This was the most complete team victory I’ve ever been a part of.” He added that Tim Carkner, Rod Jensen and Chris Kennedy also played huge roles in coaching many of the girls to prepare them for their senior years on the team. Kippan told the Richmond News that, given it’s the first B.C. sports banner the senior girls basketball has won for McMath, they’re all excited for next season already.

The McMath senior girls team, with their school’s first basketball blue banner.

The Jets’ U18 C2 and U18 C4 teams both took the provincial gold medal, while the U15 C2 and U15 C7 sides also triumphed. In the U13 section, the Jets’ C3 and C5 teams both took the top spots, as did the U11 C1 team.

Hohlweg was named to the first all-star team as well.

“We worked hard for it this entire year and to get to the final game and to win it, the girls were just thrilled,” said Kippan. “This is as high as we can go and it’s the pinnacle. The girls are pretty excited and we get a bunch of them back next year, too, so I think we’ll have a good team in the following year.” At the provincial championships, the Wildcats defeated Duchess Park 105-30 in their first game and College Heights 93-49 in their second game.

7 Jets teams produce banner weekend

It was a great weekend for the Richmond Jets Minor Hockey Association, with no less than seven teams bringing home championship banners.

Alongside Radocaj, Caitlin Kippan, who plays forward, scored 15 points for McMath, while guard Kee Hohlweg finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

For photos of the winning teams, go to Richmond-News.com and search “Jets.”

The Jets have also kicked off their silent auction to raise funds for the minor hockey association.

Team members include Aaria Johal, Andreas Chan, Emma Bradley-Tse, Teagan Ng, Tamar Gordon, Amelia Spiteri, Sarah Carkner, Tiana Maedel and Emi Nishi. This season, the McMath senior girl’s basketball team was undefeated in the Richmond League play with a 9-0 record and victories against McNair, Steveston-London and MacNeill. This led them to the South Fraser Zone Championship and qualifying for the provincial championships after defeating North Delta, Clayton Heights and Salish Secondary schools.
