Hats off to Russian news employee Eve Edmonds
EEDMONDS@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
War brings with it acts of horror and atrocity, but also gestures of kindness and courage — the war in Ukraine is no different. On the nightly newscasts, we see decimated cities and panicked refugees; we also see generous volunteers and determined Ukrainians singing amidst the rubble. But the moment that stood out for me was not from Ukraine but Russian state media. While a presenter was reading the day’s state-sanctioned news, an employee (although not for much longer) held up a sign that read in Russian and English: “NO WAR. Stop the war. Don’t believe propaganda. They are lying to you here.” It was a remarkable act of courage and defiance. Marina Ovsyannikova held her strategically placed sign knowing she could pay

a high price for it. The Russian legislatures had already decreed that reporting on the war (which no one in Russia is even allowed to call a war) would be met with a 15-year prison term. Prior to staging her on-air protest, Ovsyannikova had pre-recorded a message in which she said she was ashamed of her role in promoting state propaganda until that point. The relationship between the media and state authorities, be they government or industrial, is always fraught but never more so than in a time of war. “The first casualty of war is the truth,” may be a cliche, but it’s also telling. And we don’t have to look far from home for examples. Former Richmond MP Kenny Chiu notes one in particular. Chiu has become a vocal critic of the Chinese government’s attempts to influence Chinese people around the world and particularly in Canada. In regards to the current war in Ukraine, he pointed to a recent

According to Chiu, the commentator on AM1320, speaking in Cantonese, said Western governments are “robbing Russia and confiscating all its assets and wealth from the Russian oligarchs.” As Chiu rightly points out, Western governments are not “stealing money” but rather freezing assets in an attempt to pressure Russian influencers, to pressure the Russian president Vladimir Putin to stop the war. We could dismiss the AM1320 commentator’s statements as just one guy’s opinion, but words have power, particularly when they elicit fear. In recent days, there have been trending comments on Vanpeople (a kind of Chinese version of Reddit) with people worrying aloud that the Canadian government may come after their assets if Canada doesn’t like something the Chinese government does — like support Russia in this
conflict. However, many others on Vanpeople note there’s a big difference between oligarchs, a tiny minority of people with astronomical wealth and influence, and the vast majority of ethnic Chinese residents of Canada — even if they are well-off. So, how to negotiate this cacophony of news and information — some brilliant, some fake, some downright insidious? How do we distinguish legitimate opinions from those that are simply intolerable? There are no easy answers, but it’s on all of us to think about critically. That means recognizing when even “legitimate” media become cheerleaders for one side or another. And remembering Russia is not the first country to refuse to call a war a war — think Vietnam. While we’re lucky to have the media we do in Canada, it’s far from perfect. There are government apologists and courageous journalists everywhere. Here’s to Marina Ovsyannikova.

Lives depend on enforcement Dear Editor,
sources.
Re: “Traffic studies not necessary,” Letters, March 3. With respect to Mr. Neil Bruce’s recent letter, I have a good understanding of traffic safety issues myself. There are three pillars to traffic safety: engineering, education and enforcement. There is just so far that one can go with engineering and education alone, enforcement is an essential element of traffic safety. Unfortunately, traffic enforcement is the unwanted guest of policing. When there is a shortage anywhere in the agency, they draw from traffic re-

Where are recycling fees ending up? Dear Editor, “Return-It to accept milk and plant-based milk containers for refund come Feb. 1,” Online, Jan. 18 So the B.C. government has now imposed a new deposit/eco fee on milk and drink cartons.
How important is traffic enforcement?
Will this rid us from the scourge of the millions of discarded milk cartons along our highways?
Statistics Canada says that more than 33 people die every week on Canadian roads.
It’s claimed to stop the landfills from more pollution.
Every single death random and preventable. Motorists who have driven the roads of Richmond are forced to agree with Mr. Bruce. I would go so far as to say you bet your life, we need more traffic enforcement in Richmond.

Steveston sign distracts drivers Dear Editor,
Re: “Intersections researched,” News, Feb. 24 The intersection at No. 2 Road and Steveston Highway is named as a major accident location. The presence of a digital sign on the southwest corner in the fire station lot is an obvious major distraction that should immediately be turned off and removed. Disbelief that the city placed this distracting sign at this busy corner. It is unreadable because it is partially blocked by two structures.
What about plastic wrapped disposable diapers, that now take up about 20 per cent or more of landfills, not to mention greenhouse gases.
The changing messages are mostly blurry because of the type of lights and size of print.
Does “Return-it” plan on a diaper fee and recycling facility?
RICHMOND
It would be nice if both our municipalities and Return-it Corp. might be more transparent about what happens with recycling processes, and above all, where the money is going, rather than spending their excess income on tacky cartoon advertising.

Canada helping Ukraine isn’t rooted in racism Dear Editor,
Re: “Welcome all refugees,” Letters, March 10. Reader Iqbal Ladha asks why Canada is being more receptive to Ukrainian refugees than Syrian and Afghani refugees. He attributes the difference to racism, but there are other reasons that have nothing to do with racism. The first is that Canada was settled mainly by European immigrants. In particular, we had a large influx of Ukrainian immigrants who maintain strong cultural ties with their mother country. There is no comparable Afghani or Syrian community in Canada, either in terms of size or legacy. The second reason is that 45,000 Canadians (including my grandfather) died fighting for freedom in Europe during both world wars, which gives us a strong vested interest in sustaining the freedom of all European countries. We have had no compa-
rable experience in Syria or Afghanistan. Yes, we fought for freedom in Afghanistan, but on a much smaller scale and for people who do not have the same historical and cultural ties to Canada.
The third reason is that Canada is a member of NATO, which is an alliance of western countries whose purpose is to maintain that freedom in Europe. An attack on Ukraine (a nonmember) brings all NATO members, including Canada, perilously close to conflict. We have no similar alliance with Syria or Afghanistan. For all these historical, cultural and strategic reasons — none of which are rooted in racism — Canadians feel a particular need to assist displaced Ukrainians. It would actually be very strange if we didn’t. Mr. Ladha might have considered these points before dismissing us as racists.

I urge you to reject the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s proposal to expand the port complex in Delta, B.C.
There’s an automatic increase each year, represented by the new residences built and added to the tax base.
Resident killer whales are an iconic species in BC — yet there are only 70 left! They are teetering on extinction and cannot handle even more degradation of their key food source — chinook salmon.
However, we need to find two underutilized workers for two new jobs.
The adjacent bay is a critical and unique feeding ground for migratory birds.
One is a mask scooper to scour Richmond and pick up all the pandemic masks lying around and Steveston sidewalks (and likely other areas) and paths are covered in goose poop. The second job would be pooper washer, someone with a portable washer that could clean our sidewalks and paths.
This proposed port project puts the salmon, killer whales and migratory birds at further risk — which they cannot withstand. Our future generations are calling on us to change the historic dynamic which has been leaning too far in favour of expansion and industry at the expense of our environment and species at risk.

Rolex lifted off victims’ wrists Nono Shen NSHEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Two men have had their Rolex watches stolen right off their wrists in recent weeks thanks to “distraction-style robberies,” according to Richmond RCMP. Both incidents happened near No. 3 Road and involved a couple in a car. Last week, Changqing Yu, from Vancouver, told the Richmond News he was walking away from his car which
he had just parked in a lot across from the Brighouse Canada Line station at about 1 p.m. on March 9 when a couple, sitting in a vehicle, called to him and began talking.
about,’ but when I got close, the lady in the passenger seat grabbed my hand tightly and tried to put a necklace in my hand. I told her, ‘No, I don’t want that.’”
Sie said the stolen Rolex GMT-Master watch, known for its ability to display the time in two different time zones simultaneously, wasn’t actually worth a lot of money, but meant a lot to him.
“They were asking me questions in English, but I didn’t understand what they wanted from me,” said Yu in Mandarin, explaining that he doesn’t speak English.
The lady continued to hold onto his hand and began pulling him closer, explained Yu.
“I got it in 1974 when I was visiting Singapore. I travelled through the whole city and picked this one from a watch dealer store.
“I walked closer to their vehicle and replied to them in Mandarin, saying ‘I don’t know what you are talking
“My mind went completely blank at that moment and the next thing I realized my $45,000 Rolex had slipped off my wrist. The man in the driver’s seat quickly stepped on the gas and they fled,” said Yu. Yu said he couldn’t believe something like this could happen — especially in broad daylight.
A VIRTUAL COOKING CLASS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Just days after the Richmond News reported the bizarre story, a second man came forward with a remarkably similar story. Liang Sie, 81, contacted the News after reading the report of Changqing Yu. Sie said last month, he was walking near his home on Ryan Road, also near No. 3 Road, when an SUV drove up to him. “A couple was asking me how to get to the hospital. So I moved close to their car to give them directions,” said Sie, recalling that the man was in the driver’s seat while the woman was sitting in the back with a little boy next to her.
With celebrity guest Chef Bruno Feldeisen Presented by
“After giving the directions, the woman pulled out a black plastic bag showing me rings and necklaces. I told them, ‘I didn’t want any of them.’ Then the lady suddenly asked me, ‘What time is it?’ I looked at my watch, and she just slipped my watch off my hand. It happened so fast. And they drove away immediately before I realized what happened.”
“I had been in Canada for more than 40 years, and nothing like this ever happened to me.” Richmond RCMP confirmed they’ve received reports of two robberies where distraction techniques were employed to allegedly steal high-end watches. The incidents are under investigation. “Unfortunately, we have seen these types of distraction-style robberies before. We have previously issued public warnings and general safety messages but clearly the suspects know how to draw in unsuspecting victims,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley, Richmond RCMP media relations officer. “We want to remind the public to be wary of people who approach you and try to offer you items, such as jewelry, as they may be trying to focus your attention on something else while they steal your belongings. “We recommend that if someone approaches you or calls you over to their vehicle to maintain a safe distance from them, not take anything they are offering, walk away to get yourself to a safe place and report the incident to police.” Anyone who may have information about the incident, is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. According to Richmond RCMP, Mounties attempted to stop a vehicle following an alleged motor vehicle infraction.
In addition, Mahmoudpour has since been charged with possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
However, the driver initially continued without stopping and the officers followed the vehicle and the female driver ultimately pulled over.
“Fortunately, no member of the public was injured during this arrest and the injuries sustained by our officer were relatively minor,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Goebel.
During the subsequent interaction with police, the female driver allegedly failed to comply with directions, resulting in her being arrested for obstructing a police officer.
“Every day our officers come to work to protect and serve the public, they know there is an inherent risk but they do it to keep our community safe. This situation could have been very different.

Accident sparks crosswalk appeal Dashcam the safety control is here,” he wrote.

“I’ve personally had numerous incidents where vehicles speed past me and my children (ages 3 and 7) waiting to cross, and even while crossing. It’s a complaint the city and RCMP have heard numerous times.”
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
A Richmond resident has made an urgent appeal for a crosswalk in his neighbourhood to be upgraded, before someone is seriously injured or killed. Ryan Clare reached out to the Richmond News and the City of Richmond after a pedestrian was struck Friday evening by a vehicle at the crosswalk on Westminster Highway at Windsor Court in Hamilton.

Clare said he was saddened but not surprised by the accident, claiming that drivers regularly speed through the crosswalk, resulting in his family having several close calls.
The driver of vehicle, a 52-year-old woman from Richmond, remained on the scene. Alcohol, added police, is not believed to be a factor but the investigation is active and ongoing.

Pre-sale condo buyer puzzled by developer’s silence Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
No calls or emails have been returned to a pre-sale buyer of a yet-to-be-built condo at the stalled Atmosphere development in Richmond City Centre. The project on No. 3 Road has been on hold for almost a year — its building permit from the City of Richmond expired already last September after six months of inactivity. Simon Zheng is wondering what’s happening with the development where he purchased an 800-squarefoot unit in 2019. Despite trying to contact the developer via his realtor and other phone numbers and emails, he has heard nothing. The City of Richmond confirmed a new building permit hasn’t been issued to continue construction. The one that expired in September was for the foundation and underground parking.
Atmosphere, located on No. 3 Road across the street from Lansdowne Shopping Centre, is currently just a large hole, spanning a couple city blocks. Zheng put a down payment of about $120,000 on a two-bedroom unit in the project in 2019, hoping it would provide a home for his parents who plan to move to the Lower Mainland from China. “Every time I drive by that site, that’s like my money in that hole,” Zheng said. He said he looked carefully at the project before buying it and it seemed like they were “pretty sound,” he told the Richmond News. The central location of Atmosphere with shops and services nearby was the ideal location for his parents who don’t drive, Zheng said, and the unit has a second bedroom that could be used by his in-laws when they’re visiting. Atmosphere is owned by Alder-
bridge Way Limited Partnership and the project manager is South Street. The development plan includes an office tower and six residential towers with 824 units of housing, of which 112 will be market rentals and 38 affordable rental units. Judy Tang, a realtor who represents another Atmosphere condo buyer, said she also hasn’t heard anything from the developer in a year. She added that she and the buyer have no idea what’s going on with this project and they are desperate to find out from the developer what its current status is and whether they should move forward with the project or if they should get the deposit back. Tang said she has been visiting the Atmosphere site every week to see the latest construction status, but there isn’t any obvious construction going on. — With files from Nono Shen

A bizarre and scary incident at a Richmond bus stop last Friday was caught on dashcam video. The video, posted on Reddit by Richmond resident Mark Simon, shows him driving near Cambie and Shell roads around 4 p.m. when a man suddenly walked out in front of his Honda SUV. Simon, who had his wife and two kids in the vehicle at the time, said he was travelling the speed limit and had just gone through a yellow light approaching a bus stop. For no apparent reason, the man strode abruptly into the path of his car, causing him to slam on the brakes at the last second. The man then glares at or past Simon for a second or two, before walking calmly back onto the sidewalk. Thankfully, the only casualty was the icecream on top of his kids’ cones in the back seat, which came flying off as a result of the abrupt stop. “I used to be a paramedic, so I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff, but never this,” Simon told the Richmond News.
I don’t think I’d have been able to stop that quickly if I wasn’t doing the speed limit. MARK SIMON
“I don’t think I’d have been able to stop that quickly if I wasn’t doing the speed limit. “I saw him coming to edge of the sidewalk, as if he was looking for the bus. But out of the corner of my eye, I saw him on the edge of the road. “The next thing I knew, he was right in front of me. I managed to slam on the brakes. It was quite a shock.” Simon said the man was cursing loudly when he retreated to the sidewalk, but without making any eye contact with him or his wife. “It was all very strange. My wife and I were so angry. I wanted to get out but wife said the guy didn’t look too well, so we decided just to drive off,” added Simon. Simon said he called the police non-emergency line, but they said there wasn’t much they could do.

‘Unbalanced’ Chinese reporting: Chiu Eby’s Former Richmond Conservative MP Kenny Chiu is worried the spread of unbalanced news and misinformation from Chinese media will take away from the complete story when it comes to global concerns. Chiu said that, while not all Chinese outlets and radio programs are operating without “an expected level of professionalism” and a balance in commentary and reporting, some stations are “polarizing certain information and news” and not providing the full story of what’s happening. For example, a commentator with AM1320, a Richmondbased Cantonese radio station, recently said Western governments are “robbing Russia and confiscating all its assets and wealth from the Russian oli-
garchs,” according to Chiu, who translated a small audio clip that he heard on the radio.
“We know that that is not true because governments are just freezing the assets … and trying to exert pressure on these influencers to make sure Putin will stop bombing people in Ukraine,” said Chiu. “It pains me to see that the narratives being used by Vladimir Putin are repeated, broadcast or even amplified and used (by some Chinese people in Canada).” Chiu added some commentary on Chinese media such as AM1320 has been “pro-China and anti-Canada and antiWest.” “I’m afraid that they are becoming more and more of a platform
that repeats and regurgitates and amplifies certain point of views, and they’re not representing the complete Canadian perspectives. I think as media, it’s important for them to present the two sides,” Chiu said.
“The Ukrainian-Russian war, the invasion of the Russians, it’s only a catalyst and only one of the examples that I find disturbing as a Canadian of Chinese descent.” Meanwhile, many people on the Chinese forum Vanpeople have begun to worry about their own assets being “taken away” after reading and hearing about the news that “Western governments are taking away the assets of rich Russian people in Western countries.” In a forum post, translated by
the Richmond News, the poster said Chinese people are working hard to make money, to buy a house and make a living.
However, they questioned if their “Chinese assets in Western countries” would be confiscated if China also participated in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. “According to a report, the U.K. has already frozen the assets of many Russian oligarchs,” reads the post. “Do you think our assets might be taken away in the end?” Several other forum goers also replied with similar concerns, while others commented that they should not worry because they “are not a billionaire.” — Valerie Leung & Nono Shen/Richmond News

Coun. Harold Steves, Michael Wolfe and then-councillor Kelly Greene opposed the community centre rebuild in 2019, however, because it didn’t include seniors housing.
The 60,000-square-foot facility will be built adjacent to the current community centre on Moncton Street.
Steves has said in the past he got involved with the community centre project because of this promise for seniors housing.
The new community centre portion will be almost 48,000 square feet, about 15,000 square feet larger than the exist-

library will be replaced with one 12,400 square feet in size.
The city surveyed the public about the new community centre and library via LetsTalkRichmond in March 2021 and held a virtual open house during the same month.
The new community centre will be built just east of the existing one to allow it to stay open during construction.
The Richmond News asked the city for public survey results, but didn’t receive it by deadline. Scott Construction has been chosen as the builder and HDR Architecture will design the rebuild of the Steveston Community Centre and library. The current 4,000-square-foot
The new centre will have two gymnasiums, almost tripling in size with room for spectators. There will also be two fitness rooms — currently there is one — and five multi-purpose rooms replacing the current three. The kitchen will more than double in size and include space for serving meals. The existing community centre has a squash court and a stage, but these won’t be included in the new building.
housing comments debated Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
What would David Eby say? There was a difference of opinion between Richmond city council members at Monday’s council meeting on what the provincial minister responsible for housing would think about the pace and type of development in the city. At the meeting, Coun. Carol Day wanted to send two development proposals — one in Hamilton and one on Spires Road — back to ask developers to create “better” and higher-density development. But Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said referring the Hamilton project back to staff could cause up to a year in delay in the project that’s been in the works since 2019. In fact, he said, one idea being floated around, to speed up the supply of housing to combat the housing crisis, is to give “automatic” approval to projects that comply with the city’s Official Community Plan (OCP), like the proposed development on Smith Crescent in Hamilton. “I think this epitomizes the problem that the province has talked about and if Minister Eby were here, I believe he would tell us to get on with it,” Brodie said. A city staff report is expected in two months to see if more density could be added to the Spires Road area.

Daycare to open, wait list already closed Maria Rantanen MRANTANEN@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Tiny teacups are laid out on tables, bathrooms are equipped with cloudshaped mirrors, stroller parking is in the hallway and separated play areas have water and climbing features on the third-floor outdoor play areas — all this in anticipation of welcoming more than 100 children to the new Seedlings Child Care Centre in Richmond’s city core.
Hub, will be opening within a few weeks at the new Paramount building adjacent to the Brighouse Canada Line Station.
But if you haven’t already secured one of the 107 spots, forget about it.
What is needed in the city is “reliable childcare that families know they can rely on and trust,” she added.
Such is the demand for day care spaces in Richmond, even the wait list is closed. Seedlings Child Care Centre, operated by the Richmond Society for Community Living (RSCL) and part of the Seedlings Early Childhood Development
The high level of interest for their upcoming childcare services speaks to the high cost of living in Richmond and the need for two parents to work, explained Shannon Crofton, RSCL chief executive director.
Again asking to refer the Spires Road project back to staff to make changes, Day said there should be “creative options” to build a denser project, which could include affordable and market rentals.
“I believe if Minister Eby were here today, he would say, ‘Whoa, hold on, we can do way more housing because you’ve already got density in that area? That’s worth two months,’” Day said. “That’s what Minister Eby would say if he were here tonight.” In an interview with Glacier Media, Eby said he expects new legislation around housing will be introduced sometime after municipal elections are held in October. Coun. Andy Hobbs said he doesn’t want to force

than deficits for all kids.
But the child care centre welcomes all kids, Crofton said, whether kids need extra support for a developmental disability or not.
For families of children with developmental disabilities, if they choose another child care centre — for convenience, location or because their siblings attend it — RSCL can still support them with special equipment or education.
Through inclusive programs, “our children have become much better at inclusion… and making people feel like they belong,” she added.
Also helping to keep fees down is the fact the city leased the space to RSCL for a nominal $1 a year -– despite its annual market value at $808,500, according to the city.
Instead of having a dedicated number of spots reserved for children with disabilities, the number of children with disabilities in their programs will depend on the individual children and their needs.
And a provincial grant of $350,000 was used to buy furniture and equipment.
Support will go beyond the doors of Seedlings on No. 3 Road.

Cowell said they were particularly happy to be able to offer children to children in such a wide age range, which allows “continuity of care,” especially for those kids needing extra support.
Lisa Cowell, RSCL fund manager, pointed out having children with disabilities integrated with “typical” children has more benefits
The facility also includes a multi-purpose room with an industrial kitchen for parentchild activities, meetings or other RSCL programs.
Seedlings will offer infant/ toddler care, child care for children aged three to five, preschool and before-and after-school care. The new child development hub, 19,000 square feet in size, was built by

Hobbs claimed Eby made it “very clear that supply is an issue.” “In his words, we need a construction boom,” he said, adding projects like the Hamilton one “are part of the solution for the affordable housing crisis that we face.” Coun. Michael Wolfe, however, said, yes, a construction boom was needed, but it needed to be a “rental construction boom.” Together, the two projects will add about $770,000 to the city’s affordable housing fund. Both projects passed with Day and Wolfe voting in opposition to both. - with files from Castanet

$1.7 million for school HVAC, envelope upgrades
The province has earmarked about $1.76 million for HVAC and building envelope upgrades for Richmond schools.
The provincial “minor capital” funding, announced this week, however, only had one elementary school, Lord Byng, on its list for ventilation upgrades, in addition to
five secondary schools, McNair, MacNeill, Cambie, McRoberts and Hugh Boyd.
Just a couple weeks ago, the Richmond Board of Education was debating whether to spend $12 million of its own capital reserves on upgrading ventilation at 17 elementary schools. But Trustee Donna Sargent said, at last month’s board of education meeting, she was concerned other priorities, like buying a site for a school in City Centre and getting seismic upgrades done, won’t get done if part of the capital reserves are spent on ventilation. Furthermore, she said she doubted whether Richmond would be “grandfathered” later, that is, after the school district spends its own reserves on ventilation, it won’t be compensated retroactively if the province later funds ventilation upgrades. The school district’s capital reserve fund — about $26 million — is left over from the sale of Steveston secondary, which was amalgamated with London secondary. The original intention was to use the money to buy a school site in City Centre. “My worry is if we take our reserve and we use it for ventilation, what’s going to happen to those other priorities which we, as a board, committed to doing,” Sargent said at last month’s board meeting, adding “I don’t believe we’ll see reserves like that again.”
It’s not a matter of one or the other, it’s doing the right thing for ventilation now... RICHARD LEE
Both Frank Geyer, executive director of facilities, and Secretary-Treasurer Cindy Wang told the board, however, that seismic upgrades, new school builds and other capital projects get approved by the province based on need, not on how much a school district has in its reserve fund. Trustee Richard Lee said, at the February board meeting, the $12 million should be spent on ventilation to improve health and safety issues facing students and staff now. He said it’s not about choosing ventilation over seismic upgrades. “It’s not a matter of one or the other, it’s doing the right thing for ventilation now, and doing our best in the future to make happen the seismic project no matter whether we have $2 to contribute to the project when the time comes or $2 million,” Lee said. DeBeck elementary, which is one of the school prioritized by the school district for seismic upgrades, as well as Blair elementary, will get building envelope upgrades during the 2022/23 school year. Building envelope projects are done to schools that are suffering damage because of the failure of their outer envelope — these are schools built between 1985 and 2000. A decision from the province on which seismic projects will be funded is expected at a later date. — Maria Rantanen/Richmond News

Lost engagement ring found in grocery store washroom Alan Campbell
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
She was only separated from it for 24 hours or so, but it felt like an eternity to Richmond’s Sarah Mailhot. Last Tuesday, nothing seemed out of the ordinary for Mailhot, who had been doing some grocery shopping at Save-On Foods in Ironwood, a store she doesn’t normally frequent. But later on that day she realized, to her horror, that her prized possession — a relatively new engagement ring — was missing from her finger. Mailhot said the ring was a “symbol” of all that she and her fiancé, Tyler Pitt, had been through to get to this point in their relationship. “With the stress, I couldn’t exactly remember where I might have lost it,” Mailhot told the Richmond News. “I knew I had it on going in the store and did use the washroom there, so that’s where I looked first. I checked the washroom later, but it was gone.
Sarah Mailhot (left) is reunited with her engagement ring, thanks to Charlaine Badock, who found it in a Save-On Foods washroom. Photo submitted “We’ve had to go through a lot of challenges together, not even knowing if we were going to get this far. “There was a lot of emotional attachment to the ring. It was a symbol of our future and the path we are on.” Frantic at the loss, Mailhot quickly posted flyers at the store and alerted Save-On staff about the ring. And on Wednesday afternoon, she got a call from a fellow customer at the store, Charlaine Badock. “She found it in the washroom and wanted to make sure it returned to the rightful owner,” said an ecstatic Mailhot. “I think I took it off to wash my hands. (Charlaine) had went back in on Wednesday and she saw my flyer and called me. “When she called, I was so relieved and shocked; I thought it was lost forever. “It was a massive weight off my shoulders and my heart. It meant the world to me. I was crying on the phone with her. It meant a lot to my fiancé as well; he put a lot of thought into it.”
The pair met up Thursday so Mailhot could be reunited with the ring.
“I also want to thank the staff at the store, they were wonderful,” added Mailhot.

Do you remember the Skyline Hotel? All those “wonderful” memories and more are recalled on social media when old photos of the famous — and occasionally infamous — hotel are published.
Alan Campbell
ACAMPBELL@RICHMOND-NEWS.COM
Talk about a storied venue… It seems like, if you ever had reason to frequent the old Skyline Hotel at No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way, you’d never forget it. From being the place to go to get served alcohol while underage to being abandoned for hours in a car as a child, while your dad went inside to drink, the Skyline is not short on colour. And that’s before we even get to the Surf Cabaret club (strip bar AKA the “Richmond Ballet”) behind the hotel and the night child killer Clifford Olson got kicked out for fighting over a game of pool.
The hotel was built in 1956 and was considered Richmond’s first “modern” hotel at the time. It was, according to the Friends of the Richmond Archives, renovated and expanded several times during its history, before it was finally razed in late 2013 to make way for condos. Other memories included the felt-covered bar tables, cashing pay cheques in the hotel and the fact there was, apparently a separate entrance for females and escorts. The hotel also sponsored a baseball team back in the ‘70s, called the Skyliners.
The old Skyline Hotel at No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way was a popular place to go back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, for many reasons, according to Richmondites. City of Richmond Archives, Photograph #1988 18 85
Ukrainian-born student thankful for generous donations
McNair secondary’s Jazz Band won gold this week. Photo submitted
A Ukrainian-born high school student was touched by the kindness and generosity of the Richmond community. Dasha Laptieva, who was born in Ukraine and moved to Canada at the age of six, volunteered with her classmate Isabella Tang at Lansdowne Centre on Mar. 12 and 13, giving out masks and medovik — a Ukrainian honey layer cake.

Over the two days, the pair raised $4,080, all of which will go to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.
Dasha Laptieva (seated) and her friends raised $4,080 in donations over the weekend.
There were many heartwarming moments over the two days, said Laptieva. “There was a lady who said she felt touched by what we were doing, and there was a man who made us a sign in calligraphy that said: ‘We stand with you,’ and it was a really pretty and nice gesture,” said Laptieva. The 18-year-old told the Richmond News she is heartbroken at the suffering of her people and the destruction of her homeland, but she is trying to stay positive. “I am angry with the Russian government and military for committing war crimes, hurting innocent children, women and men, destroying hospitals, cathedrals and homes and
spreading disgusting propaganda,” said Laptieva. “I am fearful for the future of my country, but I feel proud to be Ukrainian as the Ukrainian people show how brave they are fighting for freedom.” Laptieva said although her grandparents have managed to flee the conflict, her extended family is still there, including her uncle’s family, who refuse to leave their hometown. —Nono Shen/Richmond News

Music teacher Julie Holden said the adjudicators were “delighted” at how energetic and excited the band was, and “how much they enjoyed playing in their performance.” The adjudicators did a workshop
with the jazz band after the competition, and Holden said they praised the musical ensemble for its willingness to “work hard and incorporate feedback quickly.” “They were very taken with the band’s enthusiasm for music,” she added. The jazz band had a busy week, Holden said, as the competition came after they performed at Cambie secondary Friday and made a recording Tuesday for the school district’s virtual Jazz Nite. —Maria Rantanen/News

Historic third for MacNeill

“Throughout our season, we always said, we knew who we are, we know the type of basketball we wanted to play. It’s tough to come out and play after a loss in the semifinals, I’m very proud of the way we ended our season strong.
It has been a season to remember for the MacNeill Ravens AAA boys basketball team. Not only did they finish third in the provincials over the weekend — the highest ever placing for the school — they managed to achieve every goal they pledged with their coaches at the beginning of the season. “I’m really proud of our team. This group of guys, 1 through 18, share a bond like no other,” said head coach Justin Pe. “They truly enjoy each other’s company and often that shows on the court.” The Ravens were 4th seed going into the B.C.s at the Langley Events Centre last week and they cruised into the semis on Friday night. IN LOVING MEMORY OF MUNRO, Glynn William June 19, 1950 - March 5, 2022 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Glynn William Munro on March 5, 2022 at the age of 71 in Richmond, BC. He is survived by his loving wife Judy (Ross) married 50 years; daughters Kim (Tristan), Kelly (Ron); granddaughter Mary-Anne; grandsons Christian, Jesse and Keenan. Also, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. He is predeceased by his father H. Ken, sister Sharon, mother Dorothy and brother Ken.
Glynn was a calm, patient man with a heart of gold, who would drop everything to lend a hand to family and friends. His articulate and dry sense of humour would always put a smile on your face in good times and bad.
